Event Finals:
I kind of like Zsofia Kovacs. Compared to the monstrosity that are the Downie sisters gymnastics I feel like Zsofia was lowballed. Her floor has a double layout and a full in and she still only managed a 4.9 start value. Oh this code sucks.
Thanks to Rocio you can watch it live, tomorrow.

Valentina Rodionenko is praying to Aliya to come back right now. Both Kapitonova and Melnikova out of UB finals, Melnikova with a fall and a score of 12.050. Eremina is classified but she had problems on beam on her subdivision, so everybody in Russia but Paseka seems to have problems.
April 21, 2017 at 12:22 AM |
It’s great to hear the crowd cheering for Larissa. Solid routines for her after two years out of major competitions. Some things to pulish, but good overall.
April 21, 2017 at 12:25 AM |
The distance between Cata and Larissa and the two other Romanian gymnasts is sidereal.
April 21, 2017 at 12:52 AM |
Catalina was lucky. She missed the front requirement and, even with that, she qualified for EF in 4th position. Melnikova is also going into FX finals after a semi-fall (she was doing her turns in crounched? position and she stumbled down and got oob). She is going to be vanished to Gymsberia very soon. Three of four failed routines with scores on the 12s in a major competition is way too much.
April 21, 2017 at 1:32 AM |
Half an hour later, the judges are still discussing Cata’s D score because of the missed requeriment. The judges were told off after the quals ended and they had already named Catalina into floor finals. They are still debating. I don’t know if they finally will demote her score and take her out of FX final in front of the home crowd.
April 21, 2017 at 1:46 AM |
Catalina out of floor finals. After almost an hour of deliberation, they realized she missed a requeriment and lowered her score by more than half a point. I honestly thought they weren’t going to have the balls to do it in Romania after her presence in finals was already announced.
April 21, 2017 at 2:38 AM |
I too am surprised. She’s one who has had things overlooked in the past. Good for the judges yet how strange that it took them so long to notice
April 21, 2017 at 3:43 AM
The judges had to be called off by the Press Tribune and the Technical Committee had to step in. It seems the mistake was called off on Internet even before they realized it and then it took them a little less than an hour to give her official score, that it was simply to take 0.5 from her score. It was very clear, from the start. I have a theory that they were waiting for the arena to be empty before announcing their decision to avoid being slaughtered by rabid fans. They were cheering on Lari and Cata like they were rock stars.
April 21, 2017 at 5:41 AM |
Glad they did and I think most Romanians understand the value of competing within the spirit of the rules, and not getting by on a technicality
April 21, 2017 at 2:38 AM |
Well, my ramblings about the quals in case someone wants to read them (feel free to ignore me).
-Romania is destroyed. If they thought the worst that can happen to them was to not classify a team for the Olympics, they should think again. The first Romanian in the AA classification was in 25th place. If it wasn’t for the two per country rule, they won’t even have a representation in the AA final of the Europeans, an event the used to dominate not too long ago. In 2012 they won gold in team competition, for God’s sake. The distance between Ponor and Iordache and the rest of the team is enormous. And they don’t have many more gymnasts. Ocoolisan is not much better and I don’t know if Bulimar and Jurca are going to come back after their injuries. They should enjoy Cata’s and Lari’s time, because they aren’t going to get close to a podium (barring any surprises) in a long time after that.
-The only final with Romanian gymnasts are beam. Larissa couldn’t get into UB final. She did a good routine, but had some mistakes and this Championships is full of UB experts. She was first in beam and Cata was in fourth with a few wobbles. Cata missed a requeriment in floor and, after being announced as finalist, her score was reduced by the judges around an hour after the competition ended. She stumbled in her last pass and couldn’t connect the punch front. I don’t know how a woman of her experience didn’t realize the importance of what she was missing. I think she did, but didn’t have time to fix it. But it cost her a final at home.
-Russia is following Romania’s steps. Their inconsistencies are very alarming and they don’t have the execution or the difficulty to back up their mistakes. All their three AAers had important mistakes and only Eremina managed to end up amongst the top five. Her supposed star, Melnikova, failed in three of four apparatus, with scores in their 12’s in UB and beam and getting oob and having a semi fall in floor. She was surpassed by Eremina and Kapitonova and won’t compete in the AA. She got vault final (with Paseka) and Floor Final, more by demerit of her competitors than because her own performance. Kapitonova also had problems on beam, UB and floor and Eremina had a lot of problems on beam. In worlds, several teams would go before them and they won’t smell the podium now that Aliya’s balls isn’t there to back them up. Some individual spark in puntual moment isn’t enough to be competitive for Russia.
-GB dominates quals. With Romania absent and Russia on the slide, GB was prepared to take their posts. Ellie Downie ended quals in first and is present in all event finals. She will have company in almost all of them (Becky on UB and Beam, Fragapane on Floor) and they will probably end this Europeans loaded of metals.
-Also, said decline of the more powerful countries has let us discover great gymnasts for other countries. In fact, the first five, except for Eremina, come from non traditional countries (Ellie (GB), Tabea Alt (GER), Eythora (NED), Kovacs (HUN)). And in the finals there is more diversity than never before and with good chances to medal (Nina’s UB were wonderful).
-Sofía Kovacs from Hungary is the great surprise of the day. She wasn’t even in the radar (I remember seeing her there and there, but nothing really remarkable) and she ended in second place in the AA and is in vault and UB finals. I wish her all the luck in the world.
-Very low scores overall. The changes in the scoring system is making themselves known, specially on vault and floor.
April 21, 2017 at 5:50 AM |
I think GTT welcomes thoughtful ramblings! Generally, you can add 1.9 to an AA totall, .4 to most vault scores and .5 to the other events to compare to past years since 2009. Otherwise the code isn’t too different and the EF scores look good
April 21, 2017 at 6:10 AM
No one rants more than I do so of course I welcome rants:)
April 22, 2017 at 4:18 AM
I have noticed that vault scores are very low with the devaluation of the DTY and the Amanar. It makes an important difference. Also, several movements in UB have been devaluated as well, so the scores there are lower than the last quad with the same routine. For example, Becky Downie, with mostly the same routine than last year, had in 2016 Europeans a D score of 6.9 and a score of 15.500 (E score 8.600) and this year she only got 14.433 with a very devaluated D-Score. In fact, last quad it was usual to see the top finalist in UB to surpass 15.500 (in Rio, Aliya had 15.900, Madison 15.833 and Scheder 15.566), but this year all the finalists are around 14.5, which is a full point behind last quad’s average. So I think the new code present a considerable disminution of the scores in general, specially on vault and UB.

Kamerin Moore? Oh man, her story is already a heartbreaking one and to add this on top is horrible.

Her name is super familiar. What was her story?

AA final results (I was working, so I missed everything. I’ll try to find a reply). Ellie Downie takes the title, the first for GB. Zsofía Kovacs, to everybody surprise, takes silver and Melanie Dos Santos from France takes bronze. Eremina ended up in fourth after falling off beam and getting oob on floor. First Romanian in clasification was Ioana Crisan in 18th place. Olivia Cimpian ended up the 23th. That is disaster for Romanian gymnastics. It is the first time since 2007 that Russia isn’t in the AA podium (in 2015, Karenkhova was second; in 2013, Aliya was first; in 2011, Dementyeva was first; in 2009, Semenova and Afanasyeva were first and second).

What happened to Alt? I would have thought she would be competing considering the season she’s having. She’s not injured, is she?

I think I read she was sick
April 22, 2017 at 5:13 PM
Yeah. In the Spanish broadcast they said she had an awful case of gastroenteritis. Such a bad luck!

Update: Georgia head coach fired….😳
April 26, 2017 at 1:49 AM
If fhisis because the gymnasts didn’t succeed , fine but if this is because she got rid of 3 gymnasts who were dead weight then this is stupid .
April 22, 2017 at 7:52 PM |
Russia lost the only “secure” medal they had. Paseka out of the podium. Ended up in fourth. She didn’t fell, but her vaults were messy and the new code is making itself known. With the ancient code and similar vaults, she won medals at the Olympics. Now she is out of the European podium.
And the cutest moment of one final to date was in this one, when they sang “Happy Birthday” over the speakers (and all the stadium joined in) to Teja Belak when she finished her participation. It was great. The Romanian are doing a great Championships.
April 22, 2017 at 9:49 PM |
Nina Darwell wins UB title with a great routine. Silver goes to Eremina and bronze goes to Elizabeth Seitz and Ellie Downie. Becky suffered a fall and had to be scorted out by medics. We still don’t know what happened to her. She fall on her knees, but seems to have problems with one of her hands.
April 22, 2017 at 11:22 PM |
In the Spanish broadcast, it was said that, with the new code,it was mandatory to make the front requeriment in combination with an acro series. That explain better what happened to Cata. She stumbled in the landing of her last pass, the one she usually connects with the front requeriment. And, as it was the last, she didn’t have time to make another acro series, even if she noticed her error. Another kind of possibility of a front piroutte without an acro wouldn’t have served her.
April 23, 2017 at 12:48 AM |
Found this in German Gymnastics’ Facebook page. I found it super hilarious. In one of the competition’s break, Octavian Bellu reunited all the retired gymnasts who were watching the competition and made a “dream team” with them. Amongst them are Monica Rosu, Sandra Izbasa, Nadia Comaneci, Oana Ban, and Simona Amanar.

Any of those women would make a good team coach. Other than not cultivating a good class of juniors, what is Romania’s problem? Lack of funding or lack of coaching?
April 23, 2017 at 5:24 PM
I don’t really know. I think they have more than one problem. A lot of people has complained that the system in general is outdated and they need to modernize their programs since the end of the communist regime in 1989. Also, they complain of the corruption that reigns in the Federation and the government, and they still have a government funding kind of structure, so they have money problems that can’t solve via private funding. With all these problems, a lot of potential coaches doesn’t want to involve themselves in this problematic atmosphere. So I think that Romania has a lot of problems, not only one, but I think the main ones were their failure to modernize their system, corruption and lack of funding.

Last day of the Europeans is about to start! Fragapane is warming up on beam, so Becky is out. I don’t have any news regarding the injury she sustained yesterday, but it severe enough for her to not participate in her final today.
April 23, 2017 at 6:41 PM |
Nine finalists in beam final. Fragapane and Kovacs had the same score in quals so, with Becky’s injury, both will be allowed to participate.
April 23, 2017 at 6:46 PM |
Tabea Alt had a very bad exercise, with a fall, a near fall and getting overtime. She is usually very solid and had a beautilful exercise. She probably isn’t 100% after her sickness. I hope she has better luck in the future.
April 23, 2017 at 6:51 PM |
Sanne didn’t have her day either…

Ellie Downie has several wobbles and a slow routine overall, but she hits.
April 23, 2017 at 7:03 PM |
Eythora hits everything! Thank God one hit in this final!
April 23, 2017 at 7:07 PM |
Cata hits too and should be gold. The ones that comes behind her doesn’t have her difficulty.
April 23, 2017 at 7:10 PM |
Catalina in the lead and very, very emotional about the whole thing.
April 23, 2017 at 7:18 PM |
Ponor, gold in BB. Eythora, silver and Lari bronze, as people who might bumped her out of the podium fell.
April 24, 2017 at 1:06 AM |
The was applause when they fell.
April 24, 2017 at 1:58 AM
I heard and a lot of people was complaining about it, but I am not so sure it wasn’t supportive, because Kovacs went after her and they were cheering too when she hit things, so…Or when Ellie Downie did well and everybody knows that she will go before Lari if she hit (Lari had already done her exercise when Ellie went) so I am not so sure it was dismissive.
April 24, 2017 at 2:01 AM
This video was from quals, sorry.
April 24, 2017 at 2:06 AM
The whole final is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=zOqinEexQDk. They clapped too when Tabea Alt stayed on after a huge wobble and everything, and they clapped for Sanne too when she hit her turns and she could have very well won gold over Cata if she had hit. In general, I think it was a very engaged audience and I think it was supportive after a fall than anything else. But I realize that a lot of people over RRSS had interpreted it differently. In any case, it was very different from Rio, when they were calling names to the gymnasts (I could understand them and that were not pretty) and booing and such.
April 23, 2017 at 8:24 PM |
In this world of difficulty, I am very grateful for the Netherlands gymnasts. Eythora’s floor is delightful.
April 23, 2017 at 8:24 PM |
And a 5.00 of D Score for Eremina is a travesty. She did a very good floor.

April 25, 2017 at 11:35 AM
?? I thought just Danna?
April 26, 2017 at 2:41 AM
Some of the assistant coaches lost their jobs as well. I think everyone but Brandi jay? Idk but we all saw it coming. Georgia sports are notorious for firing a coach for being just an “okay” team and since gymnastics is still such a big revenue for athletics, I knew the second they got last at super six, they were going to get rid of her. Plus it was really sketchy how she dismissed 3 members for no reason and cancelled all of the year ceremonies. I’m still getting information from any fellow season ticket holders, but so far I know nothing other than what was released
April 26, 2017 at 4:01 AM
She released 3 gymnasts who contributed nothing. Why is this a big deal? I don’t get it.

Good news. Would love to see her toughen up and live up to her potential. She is one of the few watchable gymnasts the last 8 years
May 6, 2017 at 6:10 AM
I hope so too. And I wish for her to have some continuity. I think that, as a senior, I have just seen her compete two years in a row (2011-2012) before some injury or another halted her progression.

GTT! What’s up with the Sox/Orioles? Are they going to fight to the death or what?
May 6, 2017 at 3:22 AM |
I am done apologizing because people are bitter our teams win. The Orioles starting this shit are just jealous and made their intentions known years ago bad mouthing everything Boston and they wonder why people are pissed. You (not you specifically)want to blame an entire city for one big mouth so be it but I personally think Jones is a liar. He wanted attention and he received what he asked for. I am just surprised Chris Davis hasn’t opened his mouth. Funny how these people hate us yet they do nothing but stalk our players at every all star game or pre game. I am just over it.
