Up and coming gymnasts from the United States.

I finally got around to watching last years Junior Nationals and while I wasn’t a big fan of the leader board I did find some hidden gems with a lot of potential.

This code is very much in favor of the power gymnasts and I am very much a fan of the artistic so my favorites will probably all end up in college gymnastics competing for UCLA but here’s what impressed me.

( I have no clue who turns senior this year of this group)

Sunisa Lee : Floor

For a tiny little ballerina she has deceptive power. A 5.4 start value and she starts with a double layout. She finished tenth at Junior Nationals so she didn’t make the National team but she has some decent junior start values on Beam ( 5.8) and Floor. Though her beam has a bit of Nastia posing the potential is there  Here she is competing in 2016…

Emma Malabuyo: Floor

I remember being impressed with her in 2015 but I can’t for the life of me remember why so I watched some 2016 routines from Classics. She isn’t a great dancer but you can tell she has a lot of potential . She also tumbles quite well for her size. She’s one of those gymnasts with flashes of good form in between bad form who you can totally see improving over night and succeeding in that area. Her beam is the same. Flashes of potential. She has a 5.8 start value on floor

Riley McCusker: Floor

Of the top tier juniors the  one I was most  impressed with was Riley. She has nice toe point and decent form but with start values in the 5.6 – 5.8 range she is going to need major upgrades to compete as a senior.

Morgan Hurd: Bars

I prefer her bars to Gabby Parea who is mentioned below. She hit her handstands much better. She’s a pretty dancer but her start values on beam and floor are between 5.3 and 5.5

Que?????

Who decided, Remember the name was appropriate floor music for a junior gymnast at Nationals ? (Sloane Blakely )

Others

Gabby Parea has a start value on bars between 6.0 and 6.2 depending on which you believe the official score sheet or the you tube video but she had too many missed handstands and form issues for my taste but she seems to have the most potential of the group on bars ( next to Hurd)The US might need some help from Liukin in this area when it comes to the juniors as a whole.

Jordan Chiles didn’t compete at Nationals due to injury but of all the gymnasts mentioned above she is the most likely to make a world team in the near future. The Amanar has been devalued but she is the only junior I know of who can compete it. She has potential on floor though she’s quite bouncy. If she ever reigns in her power the world might need to watch out.  Her start values are between 5.6 and 5.9 ( plus the Amanar) but of all the gymnasts above she is the closest to a true AA gymnast the juniors have.

~~~~~
I feel like I need to mention Mailie O’Keefe (pronounced Miley) since she is the reigning Junior National Champion. She’s not the greatest dancer artistic wise but she has the neatest jumps and leaps on floor.  There is something calming about her floor. I don’t know how to explain it but her double turn was beautiful. She also had some pretty landings on her leaps and jumps. Everyone else pretty much falls out of them but Mailie doesn’t. Her floor music was easily my favorite of the competition.
Her best event is beam with a 6.3 start value Her leaps and jumps need work on beam.
    I’m impressed with Riley as well. Here’s a recent UB clip: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPLOP2fAHCj/?taken-by=riley_mccusker
    Very nice toe point and handstands.
      Minus the last low bar handstand that was great but have I mentioned how much I hate bar routines these days ????
      • Exgymgurl Says:
        It says something when all the US bar routines have all of Ashton locklears low to high bar transitions for easy d score increases with minimal risk. BTW Kocian fell on bars for UCLA, and Kyla’s beam score went up, but it looks like she still needs work. She in person looks like she has no confidence
    I feel like the code is making it so that every beam, bar, vault, and even floor routine are looking the same. Similar combination moves and skills. I’m tired of it. But I’m like you – I prefer the artistic gymnast.
    P.S. I predict the Pats will go to the SuperBowl…I hope not against the Packers but it’s looking that way. And since every team I root for seems to lose, if that’s the matchup the Packers will probably win. Sorry, just being realistic because literally none of my teams this year seemed to figure out how to win…
    Snore. I don’t care anymore, this is liukins team, and well….. I don’t think we have another Simone biles
    • Sainabou Nyang Says:
      I agree. This feels more like 05-08 quad. I think US will be on top again this quad but it not by much. I dont think they have that large 7 point plus cushion more like 3 points lol. If they score clean Dtys at low 15 having an Amanar wont be that much of an advantage anymore.
      I hope we have some hidden gems that are unknown who burst onto the scene out 9f nowhere. Maybe we’ll see some at NLC.
      • gymtruthteller Says:
        Simone not being around changes everything. I find the US’S scores execution wise always too high but no one else can stay on the apparatuses and that is why the US wins by 7 points. Russia has some great bar workers and comparable start values on every event but floor but they fall 3 ,4 or 5 times a meet. The US capatalizes on that.
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eLetUS7y3MQ 8:10 for Kocian on bars, I don’t think her hand slipped, I think her body was going for the elite bar separation which is different than NCAA bar separation. Wonder if she’s still training elite routines. Brittany Rogers did this a few times in NCAA going back and forth with her training
    • Tortuga Says:
      Someone said she had a grip issue, so not sure. It took her awhile to remount the bars, so I was afraid she was out. Luckily she came back and was fine the rest of the night. But the bar separation issue makes sense too.
      • Exgymgurl Says:
        Thing is had UCLA not had the fall from Kocian and the out of bounds and Puas hands down on floor they would have been much closer.
  5. Exgymgurl Says:
    Just watching it on replay it doesn’t look like a dowel issue with the grip. It looks like she just went too far. If Brittany Rogers hadn’t been honest about her issues with bar separation last year while doing both elite and NCAA, I would believe the grip issue. In person it didn’t look like a grip, and you don’t see a dowell slide on the tv version, and if a dowell actually breaks, it sometimes stabs your hand and I didn’t see her getting treated did you tortuga? maybe time to break in a new pair of grips…
    • Melanie Says:
      It’s hard to tell from the video. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were right and Kocian was still training elite; same as Skinner. Both would be stupid not to, considering 2017 would be an excellent opportunity to come in and earn some extra “hardware” (haha, thanks Gabby). If I were Kocian, in particular, I would be slowly backing away from the UCLA team. She doesn’t seem to fit there at all.
      • Exgymgurl Says:
        Well she has already said she wants to do NCAA for a year and then decide about continuing, I’m sure she’s still training for elite bars, her vault is almost the same, she commented in bruin banter that she’s teaching the team the mental aspects of staying in the moment etc, and sports psychology. I think her body won’t hold up, and you’ll see them pulling her back next week on a few events. She’s already said she needs a shoulder surgery after this NCAA season. I hate the fact that I think with another month Maggie would have been in Rio at least as an alternate. I think Maggie is the next Sloan, and I think it’s OU or LSU for the title. Florida, UCLA Utah with Skinner and even Bama arejust a step behind, and then you are on to Georgia, and the rest. Maggie is just kicking the OU program up a notch. Brenna still always looks unhappy. BTW Kyla is at least 5’7″. Which she is admitting to now. She’s like a whole foot taller than Ohashi almost.
  6. Melanie Says:
    Regarding the juniors, I can’t stand Riley McCusker’s choreography and those horrible busted wrists. That is completely the fault of her coaches – why is Maggie Haney deadset on choregraphing every single routine the same? Those ridiculous frenetic, repetitive sections like right before her first pass. She has great potential, but will be ruined for me if they continue trying to force her to be another Laurie.
    Sunisa Lee and Emma Malabuyo are nice. I think Maile’s floor is relaxing primarily because she’s one of the few juniors WITHOUT busted wrists – she has nice relaxed hands which is very rare these days. I have always had a soft spot for Chiles with her form and poise (kind of reminds me of Wieber in a way), and I’m not quite getting the hype on Morgan Hurd. At least not yet. I think Trinity Thomas is the real deal.
    • Gymbot Says:
      I like O’Keefe for the artistry. Good musicality and interpretation of the music. Good execution helps her out there as well. I think chiles is the modern gymnast of is group and could be one the success stories of the quad.
      • H Says:
        I like her because she recognize what it means to not rush movements. Therefore the “calm” appearance.
  7. Sainabou Nyang Says:
    I like Trinity Thomas. She has the potential to be a clean gymnast with goid technique. She needs to control her landings and US will have a good floor/beam/vault from her.
    Im curious to see what Kim Z does with Deanne Sosa. Good form and potential for competitive routines but needs to work on her mental game.
    • gymtruthteller Says:
      I’m going to have to go back and watch her because I don’t remember being impressed with her.
      • Sainabou Nyang Says:
        Trinity is a decent bar worker imo, but on the other three events she has potential. She needs to clean it up a. It and control her landings. She has alot of power especially on floor.Her having good flexibility is a plus.
    • G Says:
      I’m excited to see Soza with Texas Dreams coaching as well, though I will miss her ever-present blue and yellow competition leos from her old gym.
    • gymnerd Says:
      Maybe Kim will get her some beads, or a sticker book.
