Someone posted this on Twitter. Looked like Maggie Haney was arrested in college while she was a gymnast at NC State

    http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/131211/

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      That’s hilarious

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Lauren Hopkins wanted to follow Laurie and jazzy for the last year and a half. Initially Maggie said yes then no because flo gymnastics paid her to do a feature. She said doing a project with Lauren might upset Marta. Funny because flo lost their USAG media credential and Lauren is running facts for the NBC broadcast team in addition to the gymternet press credential. Maggie also convinced Laurie to follow her when she left the gym Laurie was at. The ranch documentary where she tells Laurie she has to get 3-4 more tenth so in SV on bars to make an Olympic team, Haney is shrewd, not a kind person but shrewd and cunning. She looks like she thinks she’s smarter than everyone else. I honestly believe she thought doing this would get Laurie an AA spot. It was a last ditch effort. And then Marta just pulled the we will replace you because we are the great and powerful oz card.

    • aerial Says:

That was so crazy I couldn’t even follow it. She seems to be a great coach but between her shooter-girl look and the amount of tissues she’s been through this week definitely an odd bird on the coaching scene.

    • Gymbot Says:

I guess if you are arrested for selling alcohol to minors and were possibly involved in a riot in which a man was killed, you aren’t very employable; hence, start your own business coaching gymnastics

    • dianajc99 Says:

How is this just coming out now??

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

It’s the first thing that comes up when you search her name. Perhaps no one bothered to google her before?

I’ve never been a fan of her. She has several elites but she seems to think Laurie is her prize child.

Plus, she basically burned out Ari who is now down to level 10.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I read about that several months ago…someone posted a link on Tumblr/twitter and I assumed that people knew.

I wasn’t a fan of hers before so finding out about her “past” was just one more reason not to like her.

  2. sanitynmotion Says:

Is Maggie the blonde coach? How old is she? I kind of have to admire any last ditch efforts against Marta. Laurie has won a lot of attention and people will probably not like the fact Gabby gets to go for AA, but not Laurie who was 2nd at Trials. Marta is probably already telling Tim and Nastia what to say like that night 2 of trials when it was so obvious that they were told to spin the story of how Gabby was needed on this team.
    Blech.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yes, the blonde. The one who looks like stereotypical Jersey shore trash (sorry, I’m a bitch but I can’t help but think that every time I see her). She was in college from 1996-2000 so I’m going to assume that she’s about 38.

      • Mim Says:

I am terrible I ALWAYS think of the Real Housewives of Nee Jersey when I see Maggie. She seems like a scary broad.

    • tulip Says:

She looks heavily botoxed with fillers and some lip plumping

  3. tulip Says:

Is anyone watching the coverage right now? I’m hoping to see China but right now I’ve only been seeing Belgian floor. It was nice to see Chuso on beam too!

  4. H Says:

I am watching. Shang need a great bar to qualify into AA.

    Great beam from Turkey

  5. H Says:

Miller sat down the last pass …. floor

  6. tulip Says:

Was sorry to see that… couldn’t help but notice that she has helicopter legs similar to Musty

  7. H Says:

Great bar Shang – she got 15.300 on UB 🙂

  8. tulip Says:

Does the floor seem louder than usual? Not sure if it’s that or my feed being wonky

  9. tulip Says:

    Vault: Hong Un-Jong 15.683 . Chuso 14.999

Going to have to go back and watch Hong vaults

  10. H Says:

Ponor is prop reaching final floor. Good routine, mostly clean landings.

    • H Says:

or maybe not, she only got 14. 200, they are strict on floor ….

    • tulip Says:

I noticed that she stopped and rested before each pass which is supposed to be deductions. Don’t know how consistently the judges apply it but this may be part of the stricter scoring if they are actually enforcing it

  11. tulip Says:

Dickson from Belarus- 12.833 on bars. BBC commentators not impressed by the move by Nelli Kim and pointed out that she facilitated it

  12. tulip Says:

Musty off beam on front aerial!

  13. H Says:

    Nooooooo Mustafina

  14. Melanie Says:

Disaster from Russia on beam. Musty fell, Melnikova was a trainwreck, and Tutkhalyan was the only hit. Yikes.

  15. tulip Says:

Tutya from Turkey is 2nd in beam so far with a 14.5 ahead of Russians and Chunsong!

    • Melanie Says:

It was an awesome routine, especially since the judges basically decided to take a smoke break while she was waiting to go.

      • tulip Says:

That was super unprofessional on their part. Speculation that the judges were scoring too far apart and had to fix it lol good grief- it’s the olympics people. get it together

  16. tulip Says:

Steingrubber 15.266 vault, in 2nd so far

  17. Melanie Says:

Melka crashed again on floor. 13.2. Looks like Seda is going to make AA finals.

  18. dianajc99 Says:

    Russia’s in trouble.

  19. dianajc99 Says:

Hourly double back is almost as good as the china

  20. dianajc99 Says:

I’m so not impressed with the volunteers apparel. they should be led by people dressed for carnival!!

  21. H Says:

russia will do great in TF (i think)

  22. Melanie Says:

The commentators are killing me! Since when would Steingruber be expecting to make bars finals? They know nothing!

  23. tulip Says:

Paseka 1st vault- almost missed vaulting table- awful form due to trying to get around to land on feet, out of bounds. Wow

    • tulip Says:

      15.049 event score… in 3rd thus far
At this rate, if Marta had brought Skinner, there may have been a chance for her

  24. dianajc99 Says:

One more rotation and then we get a break.

  25. Exgymgurl Says:

Russia at this point along with Italy will be lucky to make TF. this is really craptacular with all the misses today.

  26. dianajc99 Says:

WTF..there are level 9 routines better than that!!!

  27. Exgymgurl Says:

Cata will make floor final even if they underscore people. 2 Americans 2 brazilians maybe 2 from gb…..

  28. dianajc99 Says:

OK a Romanian hits beam in the Olympics.. some normalcy attained.

  29. H Says:

    Spiri 15.683 d- score 6.7, Musty 15.833!!!!!!! (d-score 6.8:-)

  30. H Says:

    Ponor bb d-score 6.2, 14.900

  31. H Says:

    Seda hit 4 for 4

  32. H Says:

    Seda, Musta in AA

  33. Exgymgurl Says:

Mustafina won’t be in the top six group likely

  34. H Says:

    R. downie touches the bar with her feet .. minus .5
    15.233

  35. Melanie Says:

Flavia hits beam for a 15.133. And she missed a couple of connections for a 6.3 start value. Woo-hoo!

  36. Gymnast41 Says:

Craziness. Go seda! She made me proud today. As for cata scratching vault and bars, I wonder what was up with that? She clearly had routines, but who knows what happened. Conspiracy theorists are saying she waited until the alternate deadline to decide only doing beam and floor lol. Sooooo bars scoring anyone? Doesn’t it seem a little bit sketch? How were chunsong and yilin’s routines? I saw Aliya and dasha, but I was surprised with the scoring. Makes me wonder what they’ll do with Seitz/Kocian/downie later on. I would imagine some underscoring to not make it look ridiculous.

Will miss quals subdivision 4 so the last thing I’ll say is, Aly is coming to show the world how ready she is for this moment, and I can’t wait. She is so ready for this.

I wonder if gabby will even congratulate her.

    • JAS4 Says:

I still can’t help but wonder if Gabby won’t some how end up with a spot in the AA like 2012. They gifted her a spot on the team and as one of the AAers in prelims so I wouldn’t be surprised if AA finals were added to that list

      • Gymbee Says:

Jas, I am thinking the same. NOTHING surprises me with this girl anymore.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I’m not celebrating Alt’s AA spot until she beats Gabby–you really never know, especially given past history.

But Aly should be able to do it. And unlike 2012, Aly has higher D and better line-up spots than GD. My only worry is them overscoring Gabby on bars. Bars scoring today been wonky.

      • dianajc99 Says:

I feel bad because I really want her to fall.

      • G Says:

My worries from the start and the idea of Gabby somehow edging Aly out seriously makes me sick.

      • gymnerd Says:

That’s my big fear too, JAS and G. I will be sick for Aly if she gets screwed out.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

If Gabby doesn’t make aa or bars final, or any other final, that’ll be the real karma. Need this to happen.

    • Guest Says:

Gabby has to face disappointment this year. LOL

  37. Melanie Says:

Lady commentator doesn’t like Ellie Downie, not sure why. Being a bit bitchy about what was a solid hit routine on beam.

  38. H Says:

    R. Downie fell bb. ugh i really hoped she was going to make the bb final. Hopefully she will hold on to a ub spot

  39. dianajc99 Says:

    this must be shared

  40. H Says:

    90 min …

  41. Ilanchik20 Says:

    Today’s leos

    https://twitter.com/rhondausagym/status/762365390806716416

  42. Gymbee Says:

I feel sick. Come on Aly!

  43. Tortuga Says:

Anyone got a live scoring site?

  44. Gymnast41 Says:

Guys my stomach is literally turning 😩

  45. Melissa Says:

I am dying over here!! Come on Aly!!

    • Gymnast41 Says:

At least the 14.366 will definitely keep her well behind Aly for now so I can breathe

    • tulip Says:

Except for bars, Aly has higher start values. Based on her floor E score compared to GD, looks like the judges might prefer Aly

  46. gymtruthteller Says:

I had a feeling Laurie floor would score better at the Olympics than she did at home meets and I feel her bars amd beam will be lower tho her beam is pretty esp her leaps and jumps

  47. Tortuga Says:

Great floor rotation for the US.

  48. dianajc99 Says:

and now to move one screen to the vault

  49. dianajc99 Says:

OMG.. somebody must gif laurie spinning

  50. tulip Says:

Gabby looked so uninspired during her floor, almost sluggish with zero expression or personality. Going through the motions Again, she just HAD to be on the team because of all the great things she brings to the table.

  51. Bess Says:

I don’t know what Aly did to fix her landing on vault but holy cow!

  52. dianajc99 Says:

Ok my video feed didnt change but went from the bbc comentators to kourtney and john?

  53. Tortuga Says:

Didn’t see Aly’s vault but but I read it was nearly stuck and got a 15.766, this is incredible!!!

  54. dianajc99 Says:

havent seen a cheng that good since cheng

  55. Gymnast41 Says:

Aly’s vault OMG guys she has this in the bag I’m literally so happy right now!

  56. Melissa Says:

Damn the nbc feed didnt show Alys vault hopefully the craptastic primetime broadcast will show it later

  57. Gymbee Says:

Oh god they are not showing Aly here. I am almost relieved. My heart can’t take it.

  58. dianajc99 Says:

Praise the lord Aly hit bars

  59. Gymbee Says:

    She hits!!!

  60. H Says:

14.733 Aly bars. is it correct?

  61. dianajc99 Says:

does anybody know the 8th place bars score so far?

  62. tulip Says:

    AA so far

    Simone 31.733
    Aly 31.041
    Laurie 30.00
    Gabby 29.532

  63. dianajc99 Says:

    Oh hell No

    • KG Says:

Yeah what in the world with these bars scores? I’m not able to watch soooo aly’s and gabbys scores sound crazy to me….

  64. Gymbee Says:

If my husband has done the maths correctly Gabby is 0.477 behind Aly before beam. (he’s here with a calculator and post-its haha)

  65. dianajc99 Says:

FINALLY legs together on her VL!!

  66. Gymnast41 Says:

    15.766 for gabby…um.

  67. tulip Says:

    Gabby and Kocian hitbars5

  68. Gymbee Says:

Kocian best bars score so far??

  69. H Says:

    gabby 15.766 ub

  70. dianajc99 Says:

So very quickly go find a goat to sacrifice!!

  71. Gymbee Says:

Oh god I am getting cold sweats. Argh.

  72. dianajc99 Says:

who has the higher d score on beam aly or gabby

  73. Gymbee Says:

Did Aly put her hand down?!! Saw it in the background on floor!

  74. dianajc99 Says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  75. Tortuga Says:

SHE DID IT!! ALY’S IN THE AA!!!

  76. Jessica Says:

Looks like Aly needs a 14.357 to get thev2nd AA spit.

  77. Gymbee Says:

    Raisman: 60.607
    Douglas: 60.131

WE ALL HAVE TO LEARN TO DEAL WITH DISAPPOINTMENT! hahahaha!!!

  78. katecoursey Says:

    ALY IS THROUGH

  79. H Says:

    Thank you! Aly:-)

  80. Exgymgurl Says:

And somewhere in Westwood Jordyn wieber does a huge happy dance while I guess everyone including gabby has to learn to deal with disappointment.

  81. tulip Says:

    Laurie top beam qualifier pre-Simone

    She makes beam final

  82. Exgymgurl Says:

Hope Laurie slays beam so gabby is limited to only uneven bars

  83. KG Says:

Yessssss!!!! So so so happy!! I thought for sure they’d find any way they could to screw her! For once it looks like hard work actually wins over corruption.

  84. H Says:

how was Alys beam? did she has wobbles etc?

  85. Exgymgurl Says:

Thank you Jesus. Gabby only made bar finals and won’t medal because it’s not medal worthy

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She’s currently in 3rd and Fan just got knocked out of finals

      • Guest Says:

The judge scorings are not consistent in different rotations… I feel Fan Yilin is robbed.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The US got a lot if gifts which is why they lead by so much esp on beam where judging was tight all day except for the US. Same with bars and don’t get me started on vault.

  86. tulip Says:

    Seda out of beam final

  87. Exgymgurl Says:

Honestly we only have to see gabby do two more bar routines. Lmfao

  88. dianajc99 Says:

    OK.. who needs a drink

  89. tulip Says:

US up by 10 over 2nd place China

  90. H Says:

Enlighet me, how was Alys beam?

  91. H Says:

On the positive side … Everyone on the team made an EF(s) one way or another. Probably great for the team chemistry/feeling for the days to come.

  92. H Says:

How long time is it to the last sub div?

  93. dianajc99 Says:

    that dude has no neck

  94. dianajc99 Says:

umm. u weren’t financially able to do it…

    • H Says:

      ?

    • JAS4 Says:

On all three of her events Laurie scored higher than Gabby and with the way UB scoring was I think she could have beaten Gabby but I still don’t know that she could have beaten Aly though but Event finals should definitely be interesting. Vault EFs should be particularly interesting to see who does the upgraded vaults they’ve been training and who plays it safe.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

UB and BB judges were on Crack today .

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Especially bars. Kocian ahead of Aliya is some real injustice.

And Douglas knocking Fan and Downie out of bar final. Like what? Ugh.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I swear Marta bribes the judges to get what she wants. I got the impression she didn t want Gabby on this team bit had no choice but regardless Aly makes the AA , she gets rid of her and still gets to justify bringing Gabby by her bars score. I’ll never get over Kocian leading bats with the for deductions.

      • Short1 Says:

I agree about Fan, but didn’t Downie lose .5 for clipping the bar with her feet? Otherwise I’m guessing Downie would probably still be in the final.

  95. H Says:

Anyone one where I can see Alys beam and bars?

  96. lovelucas Says:

    Scores for Simone?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

16 on her Amanar. 16.100 on Chang. UB was a 15.000 Beam was 15.7 something and I forget floor maybe a 15.7 something too .

      • lovelucas Says:

Thanks! Is there hope that Gabby won’t medal on bars? Anyone know if it’s the same judging panel? and…..Geddert with that comment about GD…and shine? It must be legit, right, because his pic accompanies the tweet but….whose ass is he trying to kiss? Timing is allllllllllll wrong.

      • Gymbee Says:

I feel like his tweet is just re-iterating what happened two years ago. I mean the two per country rule IS idiotic.

      • Gymbee Says:

        I mean 4 years ago #duh

      • Guest Says:

It is nonsense that GD’s bar E scored 9.2+ and Kocian scored over Musta. Just hope the event final scores be consistent and fair again. And I also feel bad for Fan screwed out of UB final.

  97. Case Says:

I wasn’t able to watch but this outcome makes me so, so happy.

Tell me, did they shove a mic in Gabby’s face and ask her about missing all around? What did she say???

  98. Akshay Says:

Sort of relieved re: Aly/Gabby. I held my breath when Aly wobbled on beam.

Can you imagine if Gabby had gotten Silver in the AA? She’d be declared the “new Nadia,” having won Gold in the AA and gotten a Silver in the following Olympics.

  99. Gymbee Says:

And the Gabby-stans are attacking me on twitter now haha!
I wrote “karma restored” and a reply to me was “here comes the casual racists”. Gotta love it.

  100. dianajc99 Says:

SO K.kardashian west send a good luck vid to simone..did she not realize it was a team event?

  101. Exgymgurl Says:

Gabby will have a broken leg she’s been hiding from USAG which is why she didn’t qualify

  102. Ilanchik20 Says:

From Al Tratwig real Twitter account:

    https://twitter.com/altrautwig/status/762444831289335808

    • gymtruthteller Says:

As long as he keeps throwing shade at Nastia I want complain about him. He did it again tonight when he said something like , comebacks are hard you know about that Nastia.

      • Guest Says:

It is unusual that GTT you are defending Nastia.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        I didn’t defend hwr did I ? Read what I said again sure I didn’t defend her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Yeah I didn’t defend her I defended Al because he keeps throwing shade at her.

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

LOL! My wife and I were laughing so hard when Creepy Uncle Al said that to Nastia! He’s such a numb nuts…but when he says stupid things like that to her I can’t help but like him a little. LOL.

  103. H Says:

Thank you for today! Off to bed 04.22:-)

  104. dianajc99 Says:

    Nastia Warning

ok I know how we all feel about her but…Y would she do this

  105. Gymnast41 Says:

Randomly realized that Aly received a higher e-score on bars than fan yilin, and the US qualified first into every event lol. Who would’ve thought

  106. katecoursey Says:

You know what just kills me? Because Gabby didn’t cry after not making AA, I’m suddenly seeing all these tweets talking about how she’s a much better sport than Jordyn Weiber and criticizing Jordyn for crying in 2012. It makes me sad for Jordyn all over again…Gabby’s already achieved her dream. There’s a huge difference between a 16-year-old at her first Olympics who feels this is her only shot for winning an Olympic AA medal, versus a 20-year-old at her second Olympics who’s already got a gold medal. Jordyn rallied so quickly and killed it in team finals. I can’t imagine being 16, being labeled as the next It-Girl and expected to make AA finals, and watching that dream crash to the ground on live international television. Cut the poor girl a break.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

That narrative makes me so angry. Poor Jordyn.

In addition to what you mentioned, Gabby should/could have expected she wouldn’t get in. It was far more shocking with Jo. Jordyn worked for that AA while Gabby was given so many gifts.

God, thank god we didn’t have to witness Gabby in AA.

Just to cheer everyone, here is a gif of Mihai smacking Aly on the head after her mistake on beam. They seem to have such a great relationship.

      • katecoursey Says:

Exactly. EVERYBODY expected Jordyn to be in that AA final. She was the reigning World Champion. She’d won every AA event (with the exception of placing 2nd at trials) in years. It was shocking she didn’t qualify…anyone would’ve cried. But Gabby had little chance of making this AA, as pretty much everybody familiar with gymnastics knew. Totally different situation.

    • Guest Says:

Gabby was already gifted the team spot and AA qualification spot. Many gymfans were angered with the privilege she got. She even doesn’t deserve those opportunities if Trials results did count fairly. If she was crying about that, it would be totally nonsense. The gymnasts who are more eligible to cry are Mylayla/Ashton/Lauire. I think she may understand.

      • lovelucas Says:

So true – that’s exactly why I really can’t tolerate her on any level. She continues to be rewarded for not working as hard as the alternates did and continue to do. The gold for team really should not be attributed at all to Gabby. …but it will be.

  107. lovelucas Says:

Finally watched NBC who made this the tragedy of poor Gabby “the most beloved gymnast of recent times” not being eligible for AA – despite scoring “the THIRD best score in the world”. Not one mention from anyone about London and Jordyn losing her opportunity to Gabby…and that JORDYN scored the THIRD best in the world, too.

    • Akshay Says:

I thought Jordyn was fourth, as Komova was somewhere in the top three with Gabby and Aly? I could be wrong though.

I too was surprised with Costas’s comment about Gabby being “one of the most beloved gymnasts of recent times.”

      • lovelucas Says:

My bad. You’re right – Komova actually qualified in 1st. I just get so caught up in the travesty of Gabby and the tragedy of Jordyn.

    • Mim Says:

Then they should all be crying for Larisa Iordache. Bronze AA world champ, not qualified to the Olympics. I wonder what shape she is in at the moment. I bet she would have qualified for AA at least.

  108. Jessica Says:

This is my opinion on Gabby’s lack of devastation.
I think, on a scale of 1-10 fucks to be given on making the AA, Gabby was coming in at about a 1.5. She knew that it was next to impossible. She was working out with Simone and Aly the last few weeks. She knew what they were capable of. They were not slacking off like her.
So why the big hub bub? To keep fans watching and her money flowing. Like its been said here repeatedly, she is the sole income of her family. I don’t think she wanted to be doing this but felt like she had no choice. I think at the beginning of her comeback, she was motivated. But certainly not in the last year.
Look at her resting bitch face. Gone are the smiles and frankly, gone is her grooming. She looked very nice in early 2015. Hair was nicely styled with ribbons, she wore lipstick and looked more serene. Now she’s messy looking-like it was an effort to even get out of bed.
USA is getting the team gold with or without her. She is coasting on their talent. Three of her 4 scores were thrown out. So, in the end, she can claim another gold medal and the accompanying adulation with minimal effort and keep the money flowing for a few more years. Clever plan.

  109. Melanie Says:

Gabby seems relieved to me. Now she’s done having to live up to expectations. I think she’s the kind of gymnast who does best when there’s no pressure and no expectation to do well. I feel more charitable to her now that she’s not standing in the way of Aly’s success.

It makes me feel good that I don’t think Laurie would have qualified either. I feel like the two strongest Americans are moving forward. All three hit all four sets, and the top two came out on top. AND all 5 get to move on to event finals.

And Eythora qualified 7th with a fall! And Andrade in 3rd! Of course there were a few disappointments but all in all, it was a good day.

    • Tortuga Says:

I felt the same way looking at Gabby. She did everything she could in qualifications and it just wasn’t enough. She was a good sport about not making it to the AA. I think she feels a weight lifted off her shoulders that she doesn’t have to try defend her title (which was never going to happen). And please don’t crucify me but her smile and reactions to last night seemed genuine. Which furthers my belief that her Mother and Steve Penny were pushing all this on her for money.

This was the best case scenario for the team put up. No one fell, the right two are going to AA finals and everyone made an individual final. And Gabby did her job as a bars “specialist”.

Realllly hoping Eythora has a great AA showing 😀

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I will crucify you if I want too;) but I didn’t find a thing she said remotely genuine last night. The smile was fake and the attitude changed because if she continued to act like a spoiled brat she would get no endorsements. She will be a back to back to back gold medalist regardless of what she contributes. Even Amanda Borden got an endorsement for hair in 1996. There is money to be made and a bad attitude won’t cut it. Watching NBC’S broadcast last night Gabby was always off to the side and only congratulated anyone when the camera was around. When everyone else said go team USA she didn’t say it. Sorry but she is even worse than Nastia. At least Nastia is Russian and has the dirty look to fall back on , Gabby doesnt.

      • Melanie Says:

GTT, you’re not wrong about Gabby being a bad teammate. I don’t think anyone can argue differently. She’s ALWAYS off to the side, away from the other girls. She never roots them on.

I imagine it’s a cyclical phenomenon – Gabby behaves poorly, so the girls don’t like her, then when she is excluded, she becomes more and more isolated. It’s perfectly fine to be a loner, but she shouldn’t be surprised that she comes across as less likeable than any of the other four.

But I stick by my statement that I don’t care how she does as long as she doesn’t stand in the way of the success of a more deserving athlete. Maggie Nichols, Bailie Key, and Lauren Hernandez were too much to handle. Hopefully she’ll be done after this go-round and we won’t have to deal with her taking unearned places again.

    • Cee Says:

I have never had a problem with Gabby overall, although I don’t really think she deserved a spot on this team. (And I am THRILLED Aly got the other spot.) That said, I think I agree–Gabby seemed pretty chill with not making AA finals, and I wonder if she’s feeling the pressure lift. She didn’t fail spectacularly, she did okay in quals, she just didn’t make the top two. Her pride is intact, now she can relax and help on Thursday and then try for a bars medal.

  110. katecoursey Says:

Speaking of Jordyn, I don’t know if anybody’s posted this, but she gave a pretty in-depth interview last week. Covers the ranch, Gabby, Aly, her 2012 experience, etc. Also talks about hitting puberty 4 months before the Olympics…what horrible timing.

    http://www.theskatinglesson.com/tsl/perspective-a-conversation-with-jordyn-wieber

    • Katie Says:

She confirmed that Marta and the judges at the ranch liked her connections. Wow.

    • Case Says:

Great read and a really in depth look at her experience. I’m happy for her. She is in a good place now and I think retirement was the right decision for her.

  111. H Says:

I hope that Aly continues also after the OG. Does anybody think she will?
And has she actually peaked … ?
I hope she goes for at least worlds 2017 (doing a Kyla version post OG)

    • Case Says:

I’m betting this is Aly’s swan song. At some point she will want to get on with her life. Maybe she will coach – I think she’d be fantastic in a role like that.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Yes, unfortunately for me because I’ve loved Aly since she become elite, this will prob be her last meet. She has said in numerous interviews that since her first international assignment was in Brazil, it would be great to finish her career in Brazil too.

Of course, she can always change her mind but if she gets her AA medal (which I really hope she does), this will be it.

She would never do a Gabby type comeback (and Mihai wouldn’t let her) so I really hope she finishes on a high note, with an AA silver medal.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah this is what Aly came back for…no sense it continuing to train that hard for the next 4 years, and she of all people knows what it takes to train hard. She never once half assed her comeback. I’m sure this is her swansong, and how awesome would it be to see her on that AA podium, where she deserves.

NOT Gabby. I hope nobody wants to sponsor Gabby after this.

      • Mim Says:

Aly seems like she would be such a great coach, she really seems to have inspired her teammates and is really great at keeping the girls’ nerves in check and keeps them all motivated without being condescending or lording it all over them. I expect she will be attracted to a career with a little more pizzaz though, but let’s hope it’s not fashion because while she may like it I’m not sure it’s quite her forte lol.

  112. Rocío Martínez López Says:

Missed all the quals because of a family event. Not internet whatsoever for me, so thank you very much for the updates. It seems like a lot of things have gone crazy. I didn’t see all the things that happened with Laurie coming. Seda in the AA instead of Melnikova? Cata not doing AA after saying she was going to do so and, even more, not doing vault even for pride while Iordache was benched for her? Fan Yilin got bumped out of bars finals? And who is Shallon Olsen? What happened? I’ll try to see it all. If anyone is interested, the Spanish Public Television (RTVE) has uploaded all the subdivisions in its official website for public viewing: http://rio2016.rtve.es/video/discipline=ga/index.html

  113. Ilanchik20 Says:

Omg, I normally don’t bitch about Gymcastic but wholly gymcastic’s episode from last night is gross. “Gabby did her job, the judges didn’t.” I can’t believe how much shade they were throwing at Aly. Ugh. Sigh.

    • Tortuga Says:

I just finished it. I had a feeling it would be that way but as soon as I heard her announce that had a guest on, Stefan, I knew it would be a Gabby stan fest. Stefan is apparently on Gabby’s tv show or does recaps of the episodes with Jess? I’m not sure because I don’t watch her show or listen to the recaps of it. After trials Jess was saying that Aly shouldn’t get to do AA because “Her bars don’t belong in an AA final.” Luckily all the other commentators were rallying for Aly but that’s probably why they weren’t on this episode because they didn’t share her opinion. Anyway I can’t believe they didn’t spend any time saying what a great job Aly did or how she’s accomplished this great feat. It was just that Gabby did her job and the judges didn’t. I guess they don’t see how far ahead Aly is in start value and how she has been so consistent since nationals. But Gabby should just be able to waltz in after three lack luster competitions and be awarded the AA spot for having one good day and a clean bar routine. Ugghhh.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

They were actually trying to say Gabby deserved to be in the AA over Aly?

Give me a break – the fact Gabby was within half a point is sickening to me. If anything the judges were throwing Gabby major gifts. How did her bars all of a sudden go up to 15.8 when they were like 15.2 or 15.5, max, all season long? I didn’t see any improvement on them. Still labored.

Aly has an amanar, Gabby has a DTY.

Aly’s beam is better than Gabby, who can’t make her connections but still gets awarded for them.

Aly’s floor is leaps ahead of Gabby’s…how is this even an argument.

If anything the judges were not doing their jobs because they were clearly making it so that if Aly made one mistake at all, Gabby would have been in that AA.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Flavia is going last on beam during EF and she qualified 3rd–I need her to get a beam medal so bad!!

      • Mim Says:

The only one who really pushed Gabby for AA over Aly was Jess O’Beirne. The rest of the GymCastic crew were like “Sure, Jan” about it and appeared to want Aly for AA.

Jessica always says that Aly is a 3 event gymnast because of her bars. Personally, I think the same “logic” could apply to Gabby with her shitty floor routine.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It’s kind of like the Nastia and Shawn argument
Nastia is not and has never been an AA gymnast yet she has 5 medals and Shawn only has 4. The fact Nastia’s vaults was from 1992 and her floor had no back tumbling at all she code word her floor and they rewarded her for execution she didn’t actually have. It’s just messed up.

  114. Guest Says:

It seems none of the comments feel sorry for Gabby out of AA Finals. I hope those are not the 4-year fans.

Apparently wants her to concentrate on beam finals

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

A journalist in Rio is reporting this was her choice. She wants to focus on beam.

Such a diff strategy given what Ukraine is pulling during team finals right now.

      • tulip Says:

What is Ukraine up to? I saw the athlete scratch highbar and was baffled. I also missed the first few rounds and missed the discussion.

Also, do you know who the commentators are if you’re watching the NBC stream?

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

My NBC stream is Courtney, John and the third guy whose name I never remember.

Ukraine has only put up 2 on several events supposedly so they can use the final as “extra” practice. They knew they had no medal chances so they didn’t bother with a third.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I am watching MAG team final in Spanish TV right now (if you want to watch it, it is free in the official webpage) and the commentator said that Ukraine thought they had no chance, so they were resting those gymnasts who had individual chances, as Ilanchik said, especially Verniaiev, who is being presented as Uchimura’s great rival for the gold. I think is a shame, though. They are representing their country and I think they should have presented full rotations, even if they prefer for their favored gymnasts to give watered down routine for them to be safer.

      • tulip Says:

Thanks to you both for the explanation of Ukraine. I too think it’s a shame. The 9th place team probably would have loved the chance to compete in team finals.

The third person commenting with John R and Courtney K is Jonathan Horton

And it’s over Japan rocked it!!!

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

        Russia in 2nd, beats China.

  116. allie Says:

I just have to comment… I’ve been thinking a lot about the Gabby situation, and the comments on this board. I’ve been reading religiously since almost the beginning of the blog, and commenting only a little here and there. I was a gymnast and a coach (only optional levels, but at a powerhouse gym, as well as a L10 rated judge for a few years, although that was several years ago.) , and I LOVE GYMNASTICS. However, the Gabby hate hasn’t been sitting well with me.
Don’t get me wrong. I am no Gabby fan. I felt sick after Trials and wanted ANYONE else in that spot. However, the level of hatred and anger toward her here has started to bother me. Instead of fans being analytical and even a little emotionally involved, this feels like bullying now.
Again- I did NOT want her on the team. I don’t care for her.
However, SHE did not put herself on the team. It wasn’t her decision.
Then on Sunday she DID HER JOB.
If any other athlete outside of Simone or Aly got a 60+, hit 4/4, came in 3rd in the AA, and qualified to an event finals, we’d all say, “nice work.”
Since it was Gabby, it’s not good enough. Even though she didn’t unseat Aly (which is possibly why I’m feeling generous toward her now), she’s still the enemy. I really don’t get it.
So I guess my plea here- why do we have to be so ugly?
If you don’t like her, fine. But let’s move on.
She is on the team, she did good work on night 1, and everything turned out the way we hoped- Simone + Aly for the AA.
It just makes me feel discouraged the way the internet has ganged up on a teenager we haven’t even met. There are so many ugly things in the world- we don’t need to manufacture more ugliness.
OK, no more from me on this.
Thank you GTT for a great place for gym fans to discuss the latest- I really do appreciate this blog!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Look . It’s very simple . This place is what it and I am going to have an issue with anyone that knew what this place was when they go here whining because someone they piked was picked on. You knew what this place was when you signed up. God this is why I don’t allow knew people. As for Gabby she didn’t fall. That doesn’t mean she did her job or that someone else that EARNED the spot wouldn’t have done as well or better than she did. She only finished top 3 on ONE event. Mykayla who I think deserved the spot would have bettered her scores on vault and floor. Ragan would have killed her on beam and floor and Ashton would have beaten her on bars so why does Gabby get credit for getting an extra month to show up when every single alternate earned a place on this team over her
So no, she didn’t do her job unless you count the UB she hit which was then pretense to why she was allowed on this team. That position still should have been Kutchers. I’ll have more to say when I have time bit this is explanation now. Gabby didn’t put herself on this team but she accepted the position KNOWING she did not earn it when others did ao I’ll be and if she is going to be given credit for not falling. That doesn’t cut it and it doesn’t give her a free pass and never will.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know, that’s what kills me about this.

Gabby is getting a “free” unearned gold team medal (unless everyone falls like 2 times each).

And nobody can tell me GD deserved to go for the AA. I knew it the moment she was on the team she would be given that shot so to be marketed as “defending her title.”

        It’s all BS.

      • Mim Says:

I have no issue with Gabby as a person (who, by the way, is an adult, not a teenager.. she’ll be 21 in December). I DO take issue with her coming back to the sport, after having been at the top of where any gymnast can be, not putting in 100% effort and half-assing her training, and knowingly taking away a sport from a gymnast who hasn’t had the opportunity to compete at the Olympic level and has put in everything into their training to earn on a spot on the team, just because of her name. Gabby isn’t an idiot, she knows her name got her a spot on the team. Add in the reality tv show, and it reallllly isn’t a good look overall.

Why should everyone now jump up and down praising Gabby for doing her job now? She should have been doing it all along. No one else gets singled out for doing their job for their Olympic team. It’s just the expectation that they do.

However, my disdain is PRIMARILY directed at USAGym, Steve Penny and Martha for allowing this to happen, and for prioritising money over fairness, and having inconsistent expectations for their gymnasts. Gabby is the face of their shitty decision-making.

I truly wish her well for the future. I hope she forges her own path and disentangles herself from her family who appear to use Gabby as their personal moneymaker, and I hope that she will truly be supportive of her teammates in the days ahead.

      • lovelucas Says:

Yes times 10K. Gabby has been the recipient of score gifts and therefore experiences that should have gone to someone else who hasn’t slacked off. She is toxic and…lazy and worse yet – feels entitled but that’s due in no small part to Marta.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I get where you are coming from because all of us are so angry but in no way would I say these comments are “bullying” when it comes to the Gabby issue. I think everyone here is bemoaning the unfairness of the whole situation, even though this type of crap happens every 4 years. The fact it was super obvious didn’t help either.

If anything, USAG/Marta are to blame more than Gabby herself, and I think most of us see it that way. It also doesn’t help that Gabby doesn’t even come off humble about it; she acts entitled. That’s what makes it even harder to take – especially when you consider the girls left behind who actually worked hard to deserve an Olympic spot. The sad fact of the matter is that they were never going to get that Olympic spot come hell or high water; Marta (like always) had her team in mind before nationals most likely.

I called it weeks ago too that Gabby would be taking someone’s AA spot for the sake of having a shot to “defend her title.” It just was in the cards. Again, this is USAG/Marta’s fault.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

So Gabby gets a second gold medal for 1 bar routine that would have been irrelevant if Ashton who deserved the spot was on this team but we’re the bad guys for pointing it out. I love this logic . Lol

      • Exgymgurl Says:

It’s not bullying. I mean Andrea Joyce had to cut gabby off when gabby repeated three times it was the journey last night, and yes gabby it’s a journey, but tbh Aly had the bar routine of her life, Aly outscored gabby on 2/4 tied on beam and lost on bars. In boxing that’s a win for Aly. It’s unfortunate that rules out in place to help upstart teams and keep Romania from having a podium sweep are now hurting the US but it’s reality. She did her job no major mistakes. If Gabby still had an amanar, like she did in 2012 she might have been in the fight but she chose not to train the Amanar for whatever reason. I will give her this she put up a solid score able backstop routine with a lot of difficulty on every event. But like Mihai told Aly, you have to get back to where you were and then improve, get more skills. How much do you think Aly worked on her Amanar? Her floor score is higher than what she won with in London. She improved bars and beam also. Gabby did not get back to her same level as 2012 or go past it. It’s unfortunate she made other choices that didn’t involve training. I actually for a second felt sorry for her yesterday watching her she smiled after her bar set, and it’s the best routine I’ve seen her do all year. She looks (after watching things a few times) like someone with a major undiagnosed back problem, who didn’t want to hear what docs were telling her and just wanted to make it through. She looks like she’s in a lot of pain, and the grumpy look is pain management. Hey I was right about Lauries injury!!! THis is historic, I don’t think there’s ever been a team where every member made an EF. Not in the two per country era anyway so this is a depth to celebrate. Simones level of gymnastics has forced all the US girls to be better and do better, because there was only one spot available. And that’s a good thing!!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The US voted in favor of the 2 per Country rule and now whine about it. Hypocrites

      • Short1 Says:

Agreed. From what I’ve read (at least here) I haven’t come across anything that I would consider “bullying” (frankly I think things have gotten to the point, and I’m not speaking of here but just in general, where that term is used far too frequently. And I say that as someone with a background in psych). I think the way the judging was going (and the differences across the different subdivisions) had a lot people that much more emotional and riled up. But even then a lot of what I’ve seen has been directed more towards the *decision* to have Gabby complete AA as opposed to being directed towards Gabby herself (if that makes any sense).

    • gymtruthteller Says:

And please don’t tell anyone on this blog to move on. No one has to move on about any issue of this sport unless I tell them too. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when people tell others what they have the right to say.

    • H Says:

I think what Allie is saying (?) is, it is absolutely ok to point out an attitude that comes across not directly inspiring and open (and we all know that we are struggling with something when we are not able to be authentic happy, calm, honest etc) but over time it is easy to personify instead of keeping the eye on the core of the problem which is based on fear, money, politics etc. Not on Gabby as a person.

I recall many on this blog pointing to the core of the problem.

This blog seems to be a room for discussion, on both happy days and a sad days. But now and then it can be a good reminder to ask ourself in what way do we choose to express ourselves and what do we choose to focus on, over time.

Sorry if I got you all wrong Allie 🙂

As I see it it is unfortunate that they named the whole team at trials when the depth is so great. It would at least be smarter to allow more gymnasts come to the last camp, and then make a final decision there, like a filmed mini trial. And that Martha etc are able to clearly argue for the final decision of the team. And if they are not why not state that money and politics are also an important part of the play.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You might have a point H about Alli’s opinion if this blog was say IG magazine. They own a business and their message board should have rules for the betterment of their paying customers but this is a blog , a blog that I created so the truth could be pointed out as much as I feel like pointing it out . I still bitch about the AA ‘s from the 88 and 92 Olympics so telling me or anyone to get over it doesn’t bode well 🙂

      Yup 3rd.

    • tulip Says:

GTT- this is long and personal, If you feel it is not appropriate, I understand if you delete it.

My reaction to the bullying comment stems from having been horribly bullied for 6 years ages 12-18 until I was able to leave for college. It was a true nightmare. Emotionally and physically. Cruel notes passed to me in class right in front of the teachers saying I should be dead, things written on my locker, told to my face how ugly they thought I was, spit on in the restrooms, at age 14, 3 guys pulled me behind a school building, told me next time they’d rape me, then threatened to kill me if I told. I believed them. These guys burned down part of our junior high with zero consequences. I was scared and depressed.

This was the early 80s. The term bullying did not exist and it was definitely not applied to each and everything that happened or was said that someone did not agree with. It was considered part of growing up and was told it was I who needed to develop a thicker skin. I told a high school counselor once who sympathized but said that the boys had powerful parents and that their hands were tied. I was on my own.

Kids today have it worse with social media. I read these stories of these teens who commit or attempt suicide because of the irrational hate that comes at them 24/7 online. It makes me so sad imaging the pain that made them believe that they wouldn’t ever find relief and feel safe again. .

This is my story. I was not a 20 year old multi-millionaire from a parasitic family who has probably helped themselves to her fortune and now find themself worrying about maintaining their lifestyle. I was a 12 year old from a good solidly middle class white collar family who tried to help but couldn’t. I never told them the really awful stuff due to fear of retaliation. That’s bullying. Talking about an adult on a blog who flaunts her past success and expects everything handed to her is not.

And for my last words, may I say that I recall these conversations nearly verbatim when Nastia trained for about 2 weeks before attempting to make the 2012 team. She kept getting moved to the next step in the qualifying process although Shawn Johnson and Chellsie Memmell who did train were told to get lost. There was a lot of disgust over the free passes and injustices. And also Nastia’s entitled attitude and bitchy demeanor. Telling reporters that she had only been training a few weeks. What a slap in the face to those who put their hearts and souls into it. Sound familiar?

Thank you all who took the time to read my long post!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I feel for what you went through as a child. It’s horrible to be bullied and kids are assholes. Everyone has been bullied at one time or another. When you personally are said things to your face that is bullying but random comments on a blog is fair play as far as I am concerned. If Gabby wanted to read this blog that is her right but if she does she better be prepared for honest opinions amd frank talk because it’s not my job to pump her ego. This blog is for fans not gymnasts and their parents which is why I don’t promote this place on twitter or Facebook. I don’t want to be friends with these gymnasts. This blog is for the fans. We all know Simone’s coach has posted here. I have has several gymnasts mothers in the past also try and post here but I let it be known we will not sugar coat what is said. I love the triple twist girls but they spend a lot of time on twitter talking to the gymnasts and that is their right but I don’t feel comfortable doing that. Eventually I will offend someone so I keep my blog gymnast free. Sure I would probably let a gymnast post here if they wanted but they would be warned before hand that the ass kissing and Vanessa Atler at Gymn.com like would not be tolerated.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I wouldn’t call what you went through bullying at all I would call it assault. Once those boys put their hands on you their ass’s should have been put in jail. What a horrible thing to go through and even worse that nothing could be done about it.

Hypothetically: If Simone or Laurie for some unlikely reason dont do beam final, would both Aly and Gabby then do beam final? They got the same e- and d- score, so it then would be 9 in beam final?

Everyone keeps saying Aly and it have the same d and e score but I could have sworn NBC said Aly had a 6.5 and Gabby for a 6.3. Execution score wins. If b96 they might add all judges scores in for decision

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I think that that’s Aly’s max D score…she was credited the same as GD last night.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That is what the NBC ap put up last night when they showed Aly’s score. It said 6.5.

      • H Says:

In the Rio app results Aly is credit with 6.3, the same as Gabby. She prob didn’t get the layout credit

I believe I read somewhere that in this case, the federation picks the athlete to compete. So in the event that one of the two US qualifiers on beam could not compete, it would be up to Marta who to put in since Aly and Gabby had the same D and E scores.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

No it’s not up to the federation. It would go to the next highest score.

      • H Says:

so then they bring in all the judges score and decide from there … and if it happens to be the same, I guess 9 it is. At least they cannot take out the present number 8?

      • Gymbot Says:

Interesting question, who is two per countried out an event final when the score is exactly he same? Maybe the federation does choose, or they eliminate the next lowest or highest e score. Let me know if you find a precedent or a rule H

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I always thought they would count all scores (instead of dropping lowest and highest) and then whoever ends with higher E will go. Isn’t that what happened to Nastia in 2008 bar final?

H, I don’t know about YouTube, but if you don’t mind the Spanish comments, RTVE have uploaded all the subdivision for public viewing. You can see all of them here: http://rio2016.rtve.es/video/discipline=ga/index.html

      • H Says:

Thank you. I tried, but the main stream does not show the routines I was searching for and well .. my Spanish is not good so I didn’t find i.e. only beam stream etc ?

So a male Netherland gymnast–Yuri van Grlder is kicked out and sent back home by his federation. He made an EF.

I guess for sneaking out and getting drunk outside the village.

Regarding ridiculous Al…. Missy Marlowe just posted this on FB:
gym fans, just remember that Al Trautwig was also the crass ass that made a big deal out of my parents at Olympic Trials “Mother on one side of the arena, Father on the other, divorced since she was 2″……..please. Stupid is as stupid does. Can’t change it. My mom fired off a letter to NBC and that was 28 years ago.
