I say we give the Men’s Gold medal to Michelle Kwan. Men’s LP results

Daisuke Takahashi is the last of my skating loves. He is the only reason I got out of bed this morning for the Men’s LP of the Olympic games and I should have gone back to bed after he skated because what a splat fest tonight was.

Before talking about the LP can I just say how proud I am of my old man Daisuke? He was only 5 points out of a bronze medal in this Olympics and the boy is just not healthy. He is the last of my skating loves as I said above and I am going to miss him so much.

There has only ever been one skater that could get me out of bed before 12 on my day off and that is Michelle Kwan. Add Dai to that list this mourning. (My other skating love was Fumie Suguri but I didn’t like her enough to get out of bed:)

Anyway I am proud that he stayed on his feet and put down an overall beautiful performance to end his career on a high note. I know he two footed his quad and another jump but it did not take him out of the flow of his performance so if ANYONE can explain to me how he had the third highest componet score tonight BEHIND the splat fest that was our Olympic Gold and Silver medalist please do.

Nanyu 90.98

Chan 92.70

Takahashi 91.00

So Hanyu won while falling twice and I don’t care. He was overscored on his PCS but Chan was hardly any better. He fell out of 3 jumps and for once the judges didn’t give him the PCS scores to save his ass from a splat fest. Though for the life of me I will never understand how he got those scores for what he did perform.

This is why skating is considered a joke. Judges do not judge the performance we see they judge the skater based on their personal opinion.

It should be noted that Canada did not have a judge on the panel of tonight’s Long program and I can’t wait to hear the whining from the Canadian camp on this one.

Can we talk about Chan TANKING away the gold medal tonight please? I think LOL said it best when she e-mailed me these words after Chan choked. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chan was crap tonight and no Hanyu was not any better but after the SP gifts Chan got there was no way either of these 2 men were not winning Gold or silver the difference is Hanyu deserved his SP score while Chan should have been further down in the standing.

The Olympic has to decide if they want a jumping fest or a Skating competition and I hold out no hope for them deciding in favor of a Skating competition.

Fernandez was so overscored in the SP I don’t care if he was low balled in the LP.

I am thrilled that Denis Ten won the bronze after Worlds last year but my personal preference was for Daisuke to take the bronze. I think if his PCS was scored correctly he very well could have had that bronze but the judges decided differently.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am taking bets on how long it will be before Patrick Chan whines he was robbed. ” I didn’t fall” will be his excuse. I wonder if he will have the balls to do IT Russia or wait until he goes home?
I leave you with this tonight, Be thankful. VERY thankful that Plushenko did not skate in individual events at the Olympics because if he had landed 6 clean jumps he would be your Olympic champion tonight.
This little diddy was put into my head by the British commentators at NBColympics.com Truer words were never spoken people.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some people in Russia are calling out Plushenko. Its about time and can we please stop pretending he was injured? If he had a chance to win he would have competed. He knew if everyone else was clean he had no chance. Too bad he couldn’t see the future.lol

Stalking Michelle Kwan. I love her reaction to it.lol

By the Numbers How the scoring could have gone down before the Olympics LP for men

Cutest little skater ever

    I just don’t get this “sport” anymore. They keep changing the scoring system in the “hopes” of making it seem less biased but let’s call a spade a spade. Figure skating is the most biased sport out there, with gymnastics a close second.

    What’s the point even? If you can fall all over the place and medal over a clean skate? Makes no freakin sense. I’m not going to even bother watching this, so thanks for the heads up.

    Did Jason skate clean? I bet he didn’t “fall” and yet gets ninth. If you fall you shouldn’t be on the podium. Unless everyone else is doing doubles or everyone else had worse splat fests.

    This sport is judged on who you are, not what you did in your performance.

    Michelle Kwan was the only figure skater that got me out of bed, too. Maybe Kristi before her, but definitely Michelle.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      Jason double footed almost every jump. He only had 2 clean triples. He should have been further down. He got 4th highest PCS of night (read that didn’t check)

      He hit his flip and lutz (flip in combination) and he hit a 3rd triple but was over the ma of triples so he got no credit.

  2. biyatch Says:

    Tara and Johnny Weir made the same comments about what ifs regarding if Plushenko had skated. Its sad commentary when people are hitting the ice more in figure skating than the hockey games that were running simultaneously.

    People bitch and complain about gymnastics scoring being complicated (made more complicated by NBC and their stupid arrow system) but its got nothing on figure skating judging. I feel like falls should receive more deduction… its kinda like the produnova in gym, encourages people throw quads that they rarely land.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      Exactly.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      The falls are not the problem. The reason these men are falling is they are throwing quads and hoping to land them when they can’t. Take away the quad and the problem is solved.

      Takahashi is a perfect example. He is overall the best skater on the planet but he throws the quad praying to land it. If they let him go out there with his usual well rounded triple triple prgram1 he would be on top every time.

      The quad is the problem.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      Watch the live feed on NBC over Terror and weird boy. They are awesome. They point out the truth. I have really enjoyed their commentating so far.

      NBC needs to hire the British full time

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      I think the overall reliance on jumps is the problem. It’s not “jump” skating but it is. If there were more emphasis on artistry, spins, spirals, form, expression – it’d be different. But what we end up getting is the physical jumping portion; whoever is best at that gets the highest marks. And I guess that’s where the bias plays in; who can say really one person has better “form” or “connection” than another – it’s hard to put down on paper, but it is obvious to the observer. The pivotal example being Terror vs. Michelle. But I don’t need to go there again.

      For the quad, all it took was some dude doing one and now everyone “has” to have one.

      The quad in men’s figure skating is like the triple axel in women’s…or the triple-triple combo. If you don’t have it, you don’t have a chance of making podium. It shouldn’t all be about one stupid trick but it is. And it’s stupid.

      It’s too bad Jason two-footed his triples because if he had had a clean long program AND didn’t make podium your point about the problem being ALL the quad would be more proven.

      I think there are two main problems: the emphasis on the “one” trick and jumping, and the failure to not deduct falls enough. A fall should be devastating to a program; two falls should basically send you past 10th place, end of story.

    My thing about an American not winning gold or Canada not winning gold in mens is can we just get an ace please? There’s gotta someone, somewhere who can just dominate and win like Kristi Yamaguchi(I know she’s not a guy but still). There’s gotta be someone in America or Canada who can just dominate, someone.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      There probably is a potential ace out there but the interest in figure skating is gone anymore. It peaked when Harding and Kerrigan were battling it out (at least in the US) but I can’t blame the interest being fairly low when the sport is so biased and at the same time, it’s expensive. More and more figure skating rinks are being bulldozed for something else – at least in my neck of the woods. We need another someone like Michelle Kwan to peak interest but that’s tough when the best we got is Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner. Kimmie whats-her-face before that. Bleck.

      • david0688 Says:

        Well Michelle Kwan was interesting to some but she didn’t win gold. Not knocking her I’m just saying that we need someone to be interesting and to win gold and to dominate in multiple Olympics kind of like how the Oakland A’s were in the 1970’s when they did the three-peat World Series. They had the interest, the personalities and such, and they could get it done on the field. The only drawback to them was that there were fights among some of the members and disputes between management and the players. That’s who we need, someone who can do both without the drama.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        You are looking for a fantasy world:P Maybe we should steal Yuna Kim from South Korea.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        As much as I like Yuna Kim I still prefer Michelle. The only problem Michelle had was mastering the triple triple combo.

        Interesting…like Tanya Harding interesting or …? Do you guys think Yuna Kim will retire after this Olympics? I don’t know how old she is – she seems young still – but I remember she’s had injury issues as well. Mao Asada is retiring, right?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        She and Mao are retiring after this Olympics. Yuna wanted to retire after the last Olympics

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Oh really why didn’t she (Yuna)? I always felt she was under ridiculous amounts of pressure and am actually very impressed she pulled it off last go ’round.

        I’ll be surprised if she’s not pressured to stick around to compete “at home” in S Korea in 2018 (even though I’m pretty sure she trains in Canada/US)…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        She won so I don;t think she wanted to do it anymore

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Do you know why she’s back then? I obviously haven’t followed being a four-year fan now. I just know that of the current field, she is the best. Nothing’s changed much in the last four years actually, haha.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        She took some time off but never really stopped skating. She won worlds last year.

      • david0688 Says:

        There’s gotta be someone out there. Lol. Maybe we need a nation wide talent search.

      • Cee Says:

        Oh God, Kimmie Meissner. I want to like her because she’s such a good athlete, and she’s supposed to be incredibly nice, but her skating is SO BORING. My teddy bear is more expressive and emotive on the ice than she is. Even her triple axel can’t get me on her side.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Kimmie doesn’t come across as nice to me. She comes across as phony.
        Your teddybear.lol

  4. Lyra Gill (@lygill) Says:

    Hey GTT, so interested to hear what you thought of the Men’s FS.

    I know it’s possible in skating to medal with a fall but it kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth that both gold and silver medalists had shaky final programs. I guess I sort of expected a better competition…

    Any thought on Virtue/Moir vs Davis/White?

    I’d really like to learn more about Figure Skating as a whole but wow it’s as if it’s more corrupt compared to gymnastics.

  5. Exgymgurl Says:

    I think mens skating is officially a snore…

  6. Lithi Says:

    Supposedly a Russian lawmaker wants to put through a bill that would limit athletes’ Olympic appearances to 2; a bit torked about Plush, no? I’ll believe that when I see it in the books.

    This might have been brought up here before but I was feeling masochistic yesterday and browsed Nastia’s Instagram, she had a pic of hers and Valeri’s Olympic medals, all laid out pretty as you please. She said something about the family, which I’m guessing was the family of medals. Ugggh.

    • Lithi Says:

      Sorry to reply to my post, I meant the lawmaker WAS pissed about Plushenko. (Did the edit function disappear? I didn’t see it.)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Maybe you are not signed into wordpress. Sometimes my computer signs me out of the blog on its own.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      LOL The way I stay sane is to avoid all things Nastia. I will never follow her instagram.

      She showed up on my TV screen for 2 seconds this afternoon. What are we 6 days in and that is the first time NBC ruined my Olympics.

  7. uglyfatkid Says:

    Overall, I’m pretty happy with the standings. I was really worried for Hanyu when he was screwing up all over the place, but then Chan choked and I was happy again. I loved it soooo much. If I had to hear one more time how Chan ONLY did bad at the last Olympics because he was young and felt pressure I was going to kill myself. Why the hell can’t people just say what it was, he choked. Just like he did tonight. Hanyu is young…and while he choked a little too…he still walked away with the gold. I can’t wait to hear what new excuse they will use for Chan. Injured? Swine flu? He missed his girlfriend/boyfriend and wanted to be with them on valentines day? He was worried about Plushy’s back? What will it be? I can’t wait to hear whatever lie his camp comes up with and NBC starts preaching as gospel truth. Sorry, but NBC and their blatant lies and other shit they shove down our throats is starting to really get to me. It’s been horrid at this Olympics.

    My dislike for Chan was reconfirmed when stupid Andrea Joyce interviewed him after. He’s such a poor loser, and he acted like a total d-bag. He’s a piece of work. I’m super glad he was knocked down a peg.

    I love Dai quite a lot too, but I can’t help but think his injury really wasn’t healed. He did well, but he didn’t look like the same man out there to me.

    Jason choked too (as did most of the men), but since I didn’t expect a podium finish from him I was happy. If he can improve on his axle and get a quad, he could go really far. But regardless of that, I like him as a person. He seems genuine, and I love that. HOWEVER…his outfits have to go. They are so distracting to me. Lol. I love the kid, but someone else needs to dress him.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      I don’t know the whole story about Chan…fill me in? He totally had an opportunity though and BLEW. IT. Royally blew it. I saw that interview you are talking about and thought the same thing. “I am still a three-time world champion and a two-time Olympic silver medalist so I can’t complain and I have such a wonderful career and wah wah waaaaah….” When your competition splats all over the place I’d hardly call yourself a World champ. These guys need to grow a pear and put two clean programs together.

      I’m sorry but I was utterly disgusted at both the gold and silver performances. Neither should have made podium in my opinion. I was watching it with my husband and I told him “this is the gold medalist” and he was like “REALLY?!!!!” then I showed him Chan’s performance and was like “and this is the silver medalist” and he literally thought I was joking about the whole thing. I had to forward all the way through to show him their rankings and he was shocked. I can’t imagine most four-year fans being shocked and repulsed and stupified that those performances are deemed medal worthy. I mean, did NO ONE have a clean free skate?

      Anyway, I’ll shut up. I agree about Jason’s outfits. I find his hair just as distracting too. Get the boy a stylist.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        Basically, he was the “favorite” in 2010 and choked. He came in 5th I think. The media (especially NBC) keep saying he only lost because he was so young, and because the pressure was so big because it was a home Olympics. The whole thing is BS. Call a spade a spade…he choked. And this year proves it again. He had the chance to win, Hanyu left the door wide open. But instead of capitalizing on the errors made by Hanyu, he fell apart…again.

        In my previous post, I was commenting on what excuse the media, his PR people, etc. will give him this time. It’s NEVER his fault.

        I honestly liked him once upon a time. Truth be told when he doesn’t fall apart, he has nice programs. However, once I started hearing the arrogant crap come out of his mouth i lost all respect for him.

        It’s one thing to be a an Ahole and be able to always back it up, but when you are a jerk and then can’t bring it’s another thing. Chan is the latter. His comments after losing the Grand Prix finals to Hanyu was, “I’ve earned enough wins, so I’ll let him have this one.” I bet they seem like famous last words to him now…’cause he just got you ass kicked…again.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        His ass. Lol. Sorry, it’s 4am here. 🙂

      • Cee Says:

        “But instead of capitalizing on the errors made by Hanyu, he fell apart…again.”

        Joanie Rochette tweeted that Chan had the gold medal offered to him on a silver platter–and he took the platter. Harsh but truthful. What a disappointing men’s final! Worse than the women’s splatfest in Albertville.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Sounds about right to me.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        Sounds right to me too. He choked, plain and simple. It’s nice that at least someone from his country is calling it like it is.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        She got all kinds of backlash for it. So much for all Canadians are nice

  8. Exgymgurl Says:

    Love how Lindsey Vonn tweeted congrats to bode miller and the other guy and not julia mancuso who became the third olympian to medal in three different games, and the most decorated female us alpine skier…. Jealous much? Catty? Yeah I think so!!!!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      Or maybe she knows the 2 other guys and doesn’t know Julie?

      • Exgymgurl Says:

        No she and julia grew up training together and were bffs for a while until lindsey got married and her husband started running her brand…. She knows julia very well….thats why the lapse is very catty

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Doesn’t sound like jealousy as much as they had a fight and are not friends anymore. Would you tweet congrats to your enemy? Nope.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

        They both came out and said they are friends again recently… I guess that was US Ski team PR….

    • Exgymgurl Says:

      There’s actually a well known feud between them thats supposed to be over, so Im guessing its not over so much…

  9. lovelucas Says:

    Disappointing men’s, no doubt. Just disagreeing with knocking Jason’s appearance. I thought his SP with Prince symbol on his back was majorly cool, the green top for his LP seemed kind of perfect for a cut from River Dance. and I love the pony tail. Gives him an exotic look. I think he must be the nicest guy out there. He’s a goodwill ambassador for the US. I don’t ever recall a skater attending so many other Olympic events, posting photos with skaters from other countries, etc. Granted, social media as improved that ability but he’s attending lots of events, including the hockey match of Russia vs the US. Just love the guy.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      They do it all the time. The gymnasts 2 years ago posted tonz of pics with other athletes in the Villiage. Twitter wasn’t big in 2008.

    • uglyfatkid Says:

      I thought you loved Lucas not Jason? 🙂

      I think Jason is wonderful, and his skating has great potential…but his skating outfits are over-the-top to me. The ruffles that capped his sleeve (mid-forearm) were a terrible touch on the Prince outfit. I’m going to have to disagree on the prince symbol also…it was over the top for me. If someone was skating to swan lake, they wouldn’t need to glitter a swan on their back to get the point across. Prince is a legend, his music stands by itself, and the outfit was too literal to me.

      Both outfits were too loud, an Jason doesn’t needed that. His personality and skating is where he shines, so his clothes shouldn’t distract from that. To me, his costumes were amateur-ish to be honest. I wonder if he skated those programs at jr’s last year? I can see those costumes/programs being old.

      Long story short, I adore the kid…and hope he goes really far in the sport. However his outfits need more subtleness and finesse to me. I think as time moves on, he’ll get there. OR he’ll go all Johnny Wier and go way, way, way, the other direction and it will be like lady Gaga on Ice.
      Either way, I’ll still like him…I just may complain more about his outfits. 🙂

      By the way, welcome to the blog LoveLucas. It’s been nice having you here for the last few months. 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Ok if we want to make fun of outfits the obvious winner here was the fun-fetti meets the black and white cookie with ruffles number the gold medalist/Japanese guy was wearing. Now THAT is over the top. I’m still wondering what the hell put that outfit together.

        And uglyfatkid you made a good point on all the Chan excuses that people/announcers make for him. I watched his “skate” and the announcer was trying to make excuses for him by saying “well when the leader leaves the door that wide open it can actually be very distracting.” Ummm my ass it’s distracting. It’s called a golden opportunity! Pressure is off! An athlete would be out of their mind not to be excited by that! I wanted to bitch slap that lady like who are you kidding let’s call a spade a spade and claim this to be the choke fest it was!

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        You are sooo right Sanity. Hanyu’s LP shirt was hilarious. My wife actually thought he was a girl at first because if the shirt. Lol.

        And the lady announcer bugs the hell out of me. I’d actually rather listen to Terror then her.
