Olympic Trials start lists plus while I was sleeping

Thanks to Kel we now have the start lists for Trials,

Day 1
Day 2

Discuss.

Kerri Strug’s son Tyler is actually pretty cute.

More Kerri where she lies “putting my team before myself” OMG Kerri, NO YOU DIDN’T. You admitted back then you did it for your AA hopes. Revisionist history much.

Then if you look below they have a Dominqiue Dawes moment. A Mary Lou Retton moment and a Nadia moment but of course no Miller moment because apparently Shannon Miller never existed. Kind of LOL that Miller can’t get any credit from a network, SHE WORKS FOR, sigh.

Now I am watching the video and they have pictures of Miller crying from when she fell on vault IN THE EVENT FINALS. Way to edit that piece Yahoo SPORTS, lol

More OMG, Then the so called expert says, they were really choking, sorry Shannon Miller. Did I watch a different Olympics then these people? Miller messed up a floor routine she messed up due to injury and every time she competed because of said injury but they show an EVENT FINALS vault picture and act like she was the one that choked on vault.

Kerri needs to dress up a little if she knows she will be interviewed. She looks like crap. Hair on down.

Took Kerri over 7 minutes to mention the team. Kerri also is part of the 92 mens basketball team. That was her favorite moment. Someone needs to smack Summer Sanders.lol

  1. JAS4 Says:

Once upon a time there was Olympic trials and no matter how well anyone did the wicked
Queen Marta did whatever she wanted and screwed over people for whoever she wanted on the team…. The end

  2. sanitynmotion Says:

Nastia’s buried in the middle…seems interesting. And she’ll get her day over with pretty quick, being in rotations 1 & 2 on day 1…

    • Kel Says:

Yeah…at least the suspense will be over early in the night. If she bombs on day 1, does anyone think she will pull out of day 2 with an “injury”?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

This is what I think will happen unless she told she is on the team at least as an alternate no matter what. Then she will compete both days. She very well could have already been told we will give you time, until the last possible minute and that is why she is still competing.

  3. Kel Says:

So…just on facebook and USAG says that the athletes will be told on Sunday whether or not they made the team prior to it being announced to the HP Pavilion and on NBC. So…that means Marta and the selection committee are not going to have a lot of time to choose the team. I guess if some of the girls look like they were bawling their eyes out we’ll know they didn’t make it and the ones smiling and crying will have made it.

    • Jen Says:

I don’t think we have to worry about “time” being a factor. Martha will know before she walks into the arena on night two who the “five” are. Hell, she probably knows now, with the possible exception of the 5th spot (i.e. Maroney). If McKayla hits her vault in podium training, the team will be set before day 1 even begins. Then, the only thing that can mess with it would be an untimely injury.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

We all know who the team should be but who Marta picks is a whole other ball game. Thanks for the comments.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Well up until this point Marta and selection committee (namely, Marta) obviously have their team put together in place. Maybe one or two spots are interchangeable, but I think the definites are Jordyn (duh), Aly, and Gabby. I really think Marta is holding out on locking Kyla until she sees how much progress Nastia has made. If Nastia bombs, it still will be questionable why she has ANY presence on this team but I still think she will be given an alternate position no matter what. I also think ASac and Finnegan are potential alternates. The other question mark is obviously Maroney, and if she’s unable to compete then I really don’t know how they will work that.

Unless Bridget does amazeballs on floor, I think she’s basically out. Marta never even bothered to have an eye on her anyways.

Should be interesting. I will be excited to see how podium training goes. I hope ASac does some floor stuff and upgrades vault. I also hope Kyla upgrades floor but Marta won’t allow that.

Finally, I just hope may the best five get on that team, deservedly. If there is any politicking about this then that will be really disappointing, on all fronts.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mckayla being out is the big if. Without her it changes everything.

I don’t see how the alternates can’t be AAers. They all have to be minus say Alicia if she has floor.

Marta kills gymnasts. Someone will go down. It is just a matter of when.

      • Kel Says:

I think amazeballs is my new favorite word! LOL! If Kyla hits all 8 routines and Nastia hits all 4, I still think Kyla should make the team as she has shown consistency and in a pinch could be used in all 4 events. I, too, hope that the best 5 make the team. If McKayla is out, I think that’s where things get tricky in terms of who would take that 5th spot. A bar/floor specialist would be ideal but that doesn’t exactly exist unless Bridget has some mega improvements on floor.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I can’t believe Marta will sacrifice Kyla for Nastia. If it happens this blog will explode:)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I do hope Mckayla only does vault and floor at trials. Her beam and bars make no difference

      • JAS4 Says:

If the team named at trials is the team everyone expects I still have a feeling that could change before the Olympics

      • Dee Says:

I agree, Jas. It will change. Marta will name a team to please the TV Gods and then to the camp it is! Where, of course, the team will change.

To continue your story…Once upon a time there was Olympic trials and no matter how well anyone did the wicked
Queen Marta did whatever she wanted and screwed over people for whoever she wanted on the team…she made the girls’ dreams come true, and then once the doors at the ranch were closed, she took them away.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I have a feeling the team that we want will be named, Nastia will be made alternate, and in the end someone like Kyla will be “injured” and replaced.

I have no doubt someone on the original team will be injured to the point where they can’t compete. I hope I’m wrong. If Jordyn gets injured because of Marta’s death camps though it would be interesting to see what Geddert would have to say about it…I think he’d go OFF.

      • Dee Says:

oh my god Geddert’s reaction would be epic. i worry everyday that jordyn will get injured! wtf would we do!

  4. Kel Says:

I also don’t know if Nastia would want to go as an alternate. I think she would rather go out with an “injury” rather than be named an alternate (unless she is assured she will somehow get to compete). I just think she would feel being an alternate would be beneath her.

    • Gymsurfer Says:

It’s all about sponsors. If they want her on the team in whatever capacity, then she will go as alternate. If the sponsors think it looks bad, then she won’t.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Yes gym surfer Nastia has done more gymnastics than Shawn yet Shawn has more commercials. if Kellogs tells them they want her as the alternate guess what?

      • Dee Says:

Nastia would never go as an alternate. I cant see her doing that. I think she would create an injury just to be left at home.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Nastia will go as alternate because it will allow Marta to “replace” a named team member in time with Nastia…and give the excuse that Nastia is ready now to claim her bars title.

Let’s face it I can’t remember a Marta Olympics where one or two of the original Olympic team members has an injury.

      • Dee Says:

Well, ok, I guess I could see that happening.
I dont know if she would allow herself to be “demoted” to an alternate, being the reigning Olympic Champion. However, if she is desperate enough to make the team and be in the arena, she might just do it. Then Marta could injure someone, or say they are injured, and put Nastia up for bars like you said, Sanitynmotion.

The real interesting question would be IF Gabby was the only one to make bar finals and Nastia was an alternate…would Marta pull Gabby in the sake of giving Nastia that chance?

      • doughnut sundae Says:

For a career-conscious national team coach there are two guideposts to live by: (1) don’t antagonize a member of the Press and (2) don’t piss off someone who, without the Press, can get you fired. There is a reason why Marta has nothing bad to say about Nastia…

If Supergirl is named to the Olympic team, she will probably be its captain but given a cursory role.

  5. Kel Says:

Totally agree about McKayla. She should save herself and body from doing all 4 events. Vault and floor is where she is needed. She has to realize that…hopefully her coaches do too.

  6. AKF009 (@AKF009) Says:

I was just thinking; is it possible that a United States “B” team could defeat the “A” team. Let me know what you think…

    Team A

    Jordyn Wieber (V,UB,BB,FX)
    Aly Raisman (BB,FX)
    Gabby Douglas (V,UB,FX)
    McKayla Maroney (V)
    Kyla Ross (UB,BB)

    Team B

    Sarah Finnegan (V,BB,FX)
    Elizabeth Price (V, UB,FX
    Anna Li (UB)
    Alicia Sacramone (V,BB,FX)
    Nastia Liukin (UB,BB)

This is off course taking into account Nastia putting together a bar routine and Alicia adding floor, but this is interesting to think about.

Sarah Finnegan internationally can potentially outscore Aly Raisman on Beam and Floor. Price’s vault is close to Maroney. Gabby Douglas wont score anywhere close on floor and bars as she did at nationals.

  7. Gymsurfer Says:

Just watched the video. What the heck is up with Bela’s skin?? He looks super leathery, LOL. And while I agree that Kerri could dress up a bit, I think Shannon has way too much makeup on. As for the trials start list….you all said what I think. Marta will manipulate anything to her advantage!

    • terrigymfan Says:

I like Shannon but she doesn’t even look like the same person as the girl who competed in the 1996 Olympics. She has gone way over-the-top with the plastic surgery and makeup. I also think it is funny that Bela thinks the 1996 Olympics was so “memorable” but then in 2006 Marta kept asking Dominique Moceanu which Olympics she competed in. There also is a funny video on YouTube where he introduces the 1988 Olympic Team (one he coached) at their 20 year reunion and he can’t remember Chelle Stack’s name and possibly Rhonda Faehn’s name too. Bela hotdogging it about Kerri’s vault now, in front of a camera, is typical Karolyi BS.

      • JAS4 Says:

        McKayla

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I loved Shannon when I was young. I don’t know why she chose the plastic way, either. She looks like a completely different person…

Kerri Strug has the fugliest hair, I’m sorry. It’s a frizzy mess. I have frizzy hair too but it’s called a straight iron…and if you’re going to be on national television go to a salon! Sorry to sound so petty but sheesh!

Anyone notice though how gymnastics women are wearing more and more makeup on the competition floor? In ’96 I don’t remember Shannon/etc. even wearing lip gloss. Now it’s lots of bling and glitter.

Anyways, totally off the subject I know…

      • terrigymfan Says:

I think if you took Shannon’s approach to makeup and styling (too much) and Kerri’s (none) and divided by two you would have it just about right. LOL. At least Kerri’s voice sounds fairly normal now. Remember how she used to sound like Betty Boop?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The wigs don’t help Shannon either.

    • Gymsurfer Says:

What I don’t understand about Shannon is that she is apparently really religious and a Christian Scientist, and in her book “Winning Everyday” she talks about being perfect in God’s image and how God is your only doctor and you’re not supposed to use any medecine, etc…so how in hell does she justify plastic surgery (or cancer treatment for that matter)?

      • terrigymfan Says:

I’m no expert on Christian Science but I understand that the religion does not forbid the use of medical treatment such as the cancer treatment Shannon underwent. I understand they believe that their spiritual/prayerful system of healing should be the first choice to treat sickness but conventional medical treatment can also be undertaken, especially when done with consultation of family members and religious advisors.

I doubt cosmetic plastic surgery is consistent with hardly any system of religious beliefs since it is really an exercise in vanity which almost no legitimate religion condones much less encourages. Personally though, I admire Shannon for having strong religious convictions and having the courage to express them, especially since (in my opinion at least) she isn’t sanctimonious about it. She doesn’t measure up perfectedly but nobody does. Still, as I said I think she got a little carried away with her plastic surgery from the standpoint of taste if nothing else.

  8. Catherine Says:

I don’t kow why I am excited about seeing the trials lists, thanks to NBC BEING REGION-BLOCKING BASTARDS I have no access to either the live stream or archived footage.(Hint: If you are thinking of uploading trials to youtube very shortly afterwards, you will have the eternal gratitide of all the thousands of gym fans outside the US).

So anyway, day 1 looks like it will favour McKayla which is good. Hopefully she can nail floor and vault and secure her spot, beam and bars aren’t much of an issue and I agree it’s not worth straining herself to prove herself as an AAer even though I am interested in seeing her newly improved swing in a bar routine devoid of major errors.

    • terrigymfan Says:

What doe you mean they are blocking you?

      • Catherine Says:

All webcasts and archived footage are only available to those in the US. As a contrast, both Classics and Nationals were streamed internationally by Universal with no region blocking. USAG have confirmed this, nobody else can see Trials.

      • JAS4 Says:

This article says its 5 up 4 count in prelims?
Also that all the alternates will travel but will train in a different place from the team? Anyone know if any of this is true?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I remember in ’08 Hong and Bieger were the alternates and trained in some remote location (not in Beijing)…but they weren’t in the US either. I forget where. Stupid because even though TWO of the girls were injured nobody got the call. I feel like what’s the point of an alternate unless there’s an injury before they even leave for the Games…

      • terrigymfan Says:

I assume you can’t get the live TV broadcast either. I wonder if there is going to be a live webcast available here in the US? I haven’t looked into it since it is going to be on live TV, but of course some people might have access to a computer or smartphone but not be near a TV. Maybe they are not having that either since they think some people would watch that instead of live TV and miss the commercials.

      • JAS4 Says:

It will be streaming here 🙂

      • Catherine Says:

Nope, I live in Ireland so would be relying on webcast and/or archived footage both of which are blocked. There will be a live webcast on NBCOlympics website for those in the USA. And to think I was first concerned with the ungodly hour I would have to be awake at to watch when I assumed it would be showing at western time ha. Anyway, there’s always hope some hero will have it on youtube very shortly after.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland (my descendants are Irish)! I’m sure someone will be downloading it on YouTube a day or so after the event…that’s what I relied on since I don’t get Universal Sports for the Secret Classic.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I wonder why they are blocking people overseas from seeing it. What do they think is going to happen — that somebody in Russia or China is going to see it and tip off their teams about the US team’s capabilities? LOL

PS I have Irish blood in me too and always wanted to visit. Definitely on my “bucket” list.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

It’s because NBC only paid USAGYM for the broadcast in the US. You could use a proxy server that shows a US IP address and be able to watch from overseas. I make no claims on the legality of this am not recommending it and it is purely hypothetical that you could gOogle how to accomplish this. Also it’s purely theoretical that you’d need to be careful because some proxy servers carry viruses.

      • terrigymfan Says:

And please consult your olegal, tax, financial, medical, spiritual, and other professional advisors for a full analysis of the risks involved before proceeding.

    • Catherine Says:

Haha well youtube footage of current US national team well outstrips that of Russia and China. Normally region blocking is in place when there is a license fee, I cannot think of any other actually legitimate reason. There’s big interest in Trials internationally, nobody would mind a few ads on the screen..generate some more revenue for them!

I recommend the West and South West 🙂 (West= Galway, Connemara district. South-West= West Cork and Kerry peninsula in particular). Dublin is a nice charming city but country Ireland is much better.

    • Catherine Says:

Also, classics was livestreamed internationally, no need for youtube in that instance.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I figured some obscure legal reason was behind this. I watched Classics and the first day of Nationals on the universalsports webcast since I don’t get the universalsports TV station. I think it is funny that they just have dead air time on the webcast when the TV broadcast goes to commercials. Sometimes you could hear Tim or Al or Elfie talking to each other not realizing people could hear them. They never said anything really embarrassing but came close a couple of times. It would have been funny if they said Marta was an old hag or Nastia was a bitch or something. You would think they would feel that space with commercials but again I am sure there is some obscure legal reason why they don’t.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah it’s something to do with licensing since NBC is a for-profit major corporate network. Bah humbug on their part. I’m sure you’ll get to see it though…just have to be more patient…and yeah I feel for you there, since we’ve been patient enough waiting all these months!

Maroney seems to be in good spirits via twitter; hope she’s up to her routines. Man, still so sucky that it’s only 5 girls that get to go.

    • H Says:

Is it not something called creative ip adress

    • Gymbee Says:

Catherine, same situation here! I live in London. First I was like “ok, I can survive with only 2 hours of sleep when getting to work on monday, no problem” and I was planning to do that, but now they won’t even show it grrr!
I was so thrilled when I was able to see Classics and Nationals on the Universal sports website.
I am asking my husband who’s a sports freak and sometimes manages to get past the regional block if there’s a way to do it! Will post it here if theres a smart way!

      • Catherine Says:

Infuriating or what! And it looks like license fee is not the issue. I can’t get a job so sleep wasn’t even a concern ha. Interesting, I’ll keep an eye out. Somebody on intl gymnast said that you have to put in your TV provider’s code to get the webcast? And that it worked for them when they watched diving trials on the website. So looks like they REALLY don’t watch people to circumvent the region block. Bastards.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I wonder if Sling Box would work. I’ve never tried it but it,s supposed to be a box you hook up to your cable or satellite box and the Internet and then you can watch whatever is on your TV on a computer anywhere there is a broadband connection. All you have to do is type in a particular Internet address and presto. If you could find someone in the US who was willing to let you use their Sling Box address you could be in business.

  9. JAS4 Says:

    Some podium training videos

  10. JAS4 Says:

    • JAS4 Says:

This link to the last one USAG tweet I posted has lots of podium training videos I just watched Jordyn’ bars did she upgrade the dismount?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I just read Jordyn’s blog somewhere…she is adding a twist to it – so full twisting double back…thanks for this link. Looks like McKayla is training all events, good!

      • JAS4 Says:

I just finished watching all the videos I have to say Rebecca looked more confident on beam than I’ve seen her look in a long time she didn’t do her Patterson though just a timer dismount
Gabby actually looked pretty good on beam they didn’t show Nastia’s bar routine only her dismount I liked Jordyn’s upgrade its good to see McKayla doing ok I we could’ve seen Kyla’s tumbling passes on floor to see if she upgraded

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Loved how Nastia was like glaring at Kyla in the background while she was on floor and on bars…

I also thought it kind of funny Jordyn started busting out sit-ups while Kyla was on floor…I mean, what’s the point of that? Like she’s not conditioned at this stage or maybe she was just warming up her core…

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I thought that was odd too lol I wonder if McKayla will be doing floor at trials?

      • doughnut sundae Says:

Obviously, Jordyn is not working out. She is probably giving herself a massage, working the stiffness out of her lower back – stretching – by contracting the opposing muscle groups.

    • Gymbee Says:

Stupid question – how do you post the twitter stuff here? 🙂

  11. terrigymfan Says:

I think this lays to rest the idea that Mckayla is too injured to compete at trials. I am very confident now that, barrimg some unforeseen injury, the primary team is going to ne Jordan, Aly, Gabby, Mckayla, and Kyla. The only possibilty I see is Marta choosing someone other than Kyla but I think that is very unlikely. This weekend is really more about who the alternates will be.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

NO you can’t say that about Kyla. 🙂 I’m such a fan; really irritated she won’t upgrade her darn floor. Anyways. If Nastia gets a place instead of her I will go apesh*t.

I can’t help but think wow, US looks really strong on beam. Just overall. Gabby looked good but she tends to look good when there’s no pressure. We’ll see how she does on beam this time around.

I think the alternates should be Price, Finnegan, and ASac. ASac can fill in for Maroney of Aly if they go down and Price/Finnegan can fill in for any of the others. Would only make sense.

I can’t help but notice how bandaged up some people’s feet are – look at Gabby’s ankle. I can’t help but think “on brink of injury.” Although I know if Gabby broke an ankle Marta would still keep her on the team for UB – like Memmel in ’08.

And Nastia’s beam did not look any better than it did three weeks ago.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Nastia looked like she gained a few pounds to me especially in the legs

      • JAS4 Says:

Nastia’s swing on bars looks more forced than it did in 08 and Nastia is still skinny but not the same build as she was in 08 so I don’t know if she’d err get her swing back even with more time and I think her legs look so much bigger because in 08 her legs were like the size of someones wrist lol if she had started her comeback sooner she might have had more time to adjust to her new body type but I think she still expects to be ables to do things the same way she did in 08 but it doesn’t work

      • JAS4 Says:

I noticed that Alicia’s ankle looked more taped than before hope her Achilles isn’t bothering her

      • Catherine Says:

Yeah you really see it when you compare it to her handstands in 2008, no hips back then. It looks like she has issues with it, wearing black shorts all the time.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I want Kyla in the team too! I just think if Marta decides to screw somebody over to put someone else on (God forbid Nastia), it is going to be Kyla.

      • JAS4 Says:

I could totally see Marta putting together a team of Aly, McKayla, Nastia, Gabby, and Jordyn so she could have a team of her favorites plus Jordyn I think if she could she’d screw over Jordyn for another one of her favorites lol

      • JAS4 Says:

        Russian Rumors

      • Gymbee Says:

My uncle who’s a sports medicine surgeon told me that if an athlete has a little pain (but no necessarily major risk for injury), often it helps psychologically to tape it. Apparently they will then have the “ok I have pain in my foot and it might get injured, but I have it bandaged now to remind me not to be reckless and do landings well”.

      • JAS4 Says:

That makes sense it’s also probably kind of like when little kids get a scratch and want a bandaid and it makes them feel better even if it doesn’t really do anything (unless their my kids who happen to hate bandaids lol)

  12. Catherine Says:

McKayla’s floor music can be heard during somebody else’s video..either Sarah Finnegan’s or Brenna Dowell’s, one or the other! She is clearly doing AA and looks in great shape to go up and hit all of her routines, hurray!

Will be VERY interesting to see if Nastia hits full routines in media podium training tomorrow, and to see how much help Valeri gives her on bars. She might well have no mistakes, but I can’t see her endurance levels stretching to the point where she will have flawless floaty 2008 style routines. Beam looks much likes classic- fine, not anything special.

Jordyn’s shoddy beam connections, why haven’t they sorted this out? She’s a great beam worker, but she just looks tired and she won’t get credited for those. Maybe she is being paced to the very last second to peak at just the right time.

    • nero Says:

Jo will be fine if she doesn’t get hurt, makes the team and gets into the really regimented training, she’ll get the wobbles out and her connections down. I trust her.

And people need to get off Nastia looking like she did in ’08, she’ll never look like that again. Wasn’t she like 99 pounds? She has boobs and hips now and all the training in the world wont make those devils go away.

Great to see Maroney doing so much. She is the one gymnast that I feel has the right to make the team with the idea that she still needs a little more time to get her routines together.

Put Price or Sac as alternate and if Maroney isn’t doing great switch them out

      • Catherine Says:

Ah no, not criticising her for gaining weight, of course she would have. It’s just more noticeable when she was off the scene for so long and so thin to begin with. She looks better for it! It seems that she is struggling with it both physically with her routines and body image wise as she rarely cracks out a leotard when she doesn’t have to which I find kinda sad IF it hints that she’s not happy with her body. It’s only an issue because it seems like it may have affected her training compared to last time.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Don’t apologize for your opinion.

She has gained weight and no one expects her to look like 08 Nastia. IMO she looks normal but in no way does she look skinny and I still think she gained some weight from a few weeks ago.

      • Catherine Says:

Yeah weight is more of an observation than an attack. Attack is reserved for her routines/Valeri/camera overload on her face/hype over her chances.

      • nero Says:

Yes I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that it was you, that comment was just a general thing. I see everywhere where people are calling her fat and it makes me extremely uncomfortable.

I definitely think it’s OK to say that she is not in Olympic level routine shape.

I just get sick and tired of anonymous cowards on the internet calling not just Nastia, but Jordyn and Aly and others ‘fat’. Not everyone is built like Maroney, Gabby or Komova and it really gets under my skin

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Can’t agree with you more nero. These girls are all very healthy and in extremely good shape. Even Nastia looks amazing. Yeah, she’s definitely filled out a little since ’08 but it looks much better on her.

Jordyn and Aly are nothing but muscle, skin, and bone. In fact I marvel at Jordyn’s arms. Whoever would dare to call any of these ladies fat is just plain ludicrous. If they are fat, then Britney Spears is a lardo.

      • JAS4 Says:

If people think gymnast are fat then what do they think average size people are hippos? Lol

      • Catherine Says:

Oh right, yeah big time hate people like that. Shawn’s youtube videos still have horrible comments beneath, makes me mad.

      • terrigymfan Says:

There are a lot of really perverted and disgusting comments under YouTube videos of the gymnasts. I know we can’t do anything about it in this Internet age but it still pisses me off to no end, especially since one former elite gymnast is a good friend of mine. I just pray she hasn’t seen some of the comments. I wonder what some of these cowards would think if they saw comments like these about their mothers, wives, sisters, girlfriends, whatever.

      • Dee Says:

Nastia was 99 pounds in Beijing. She wont look like that again. She’s in her 20’s now and she looks normal for her age. I think she looks great. I know that people comment about her wearing shorts and as an adult gymnast I will admit that I wont go into the gym without shorts, either. Even though I am a little person, leos do not fit a 25 year old body like they do a 16 year old body. I wear the same leos I wore as a teen and they ride up differently now…so I wear the shorts to spare everyone else’s eyes around me!

Terri – I hate reading the youtube comments under videos. The ones about Shawn Johnson being “fat” really burned me up. It cracks me up because I know that the people that write these comments are probably NOT the epitome of health and fitness.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yea. Probably some overweight (I won’t use the politically incorrect term “fat”) guy with a beer gut holding a beer in one hand and a chili dog in the other!

I weighed 85 lbs and was barely five feett tall when I was 16 and hadn’t started “developing” at all. l then grew 7 inches and put on 30 lbs before I reached my adult size. I cannot imagine someone expecting me to have looked the same as an adult (even when I was in my early twenties) or to have fit into a leotard the same way as when I was 16. I was not a gymnast so really never wore leotards but was a competitive swimmer and runner. With running it is not an issue at all of course. Swimsuits do fit somewhat the same way as leotards I guess but it’s obviously not the same since you are not so “exposed” when you are swimming. Even so I prefer to wear the Fastskins when I am working out which cover my thighs. They not only keep me warmer they, as you say, spare everyone’s eyes around me. I can definitely see why as a gymnast you would want to wear shorts whenever you can once you get older.

      • JAS4 Says:

I have never been really thin I just wasn’t built that way I am really short and when I was in high school I was probably 120-130 but I was very muscular and I was only like a size 6/8 but I was always self conscious about my weight because I had friends who were my height and only weighed like 100lbs and were like a size 0 or 2 but now I look back at the pictures and realize how I wasn’t actually fat like I thought lol I was actually pretty average

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yes, it seems like almost all of us, or at least the vast majority of us, had some sort of body image issue when we were teens. For me, although I was athletic, it was being very slim and the only girl as a 15 and 16 year old (or so it seemed) who hadn’t hit puberty and started “maturing.” For others it is thinking they are overweight even when in reality they are not. Thank God we all got through it. I am so glad there seems to be at least a better awareness today of the whole issue of body image with teen girls in general and with the elite gymnasts. Back in the eighties and nineties they would routinely list the girls’ height and weight right under their names when they showed them on TV, and the announcers would routinely make references to their weight and height. They don’t do that anymore and it is a good thing.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I don’t know of any woman that would want her weight announced on tv regardless of size lol on another note as for the men’s team
I really hope Brooks makes it he is always cheering on his teammates and so cheerful it would be nice of more people on the women’s and men’s team were more like this

  13. JAS4 Says:

Check out Alicia’s timer with a little more height she could easily do the front handspring double pike which is the same vault Chris Brooks did lol I think it has a 6.9 SV lol

  14. Kel Says:

There is a you tube video posted of McKayla doing an amanar at podium training today. Looks AMAZING!!! I would say any questions about how she is doing have been answered. I haven’t seen any videos posted of her floor, but hopefully that looks good too. Why is it that some gymnasts don’t do full routines during podium training (i.e. Nastia only doing dismount on bars and Kyla not completing her floor routine)?

    • Gymsurfer Says:

Yep, I saw McKayla’s Amanar too and was very very impressed. So glad she is back and I will be sooo pissed if she is not on the team!

  15. Kel Says:

BTW…Jordyn was not looking very good on beam. She needs to stop having so many balance checks and get her connections. She just, once again, looked tired. Hope she pulls it together. Also…Nastia looked kind of blah on beam and I thought so many of the other girls already looked great on bars.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I KNOW you’d think Geddert would consider this (changing her beam back to what it used to be) since Jordyn’s beam has gone down in rankings even among her teammates. Beam is what basically allowed for her to win that gold medal at Worlds. Now it just looks “off” or something. I hate how she’s lumped her full back in between two easier elements…it just doesn’t flow anymore. If she wanted to upgrade on beam I’m sure there were other ways to do it besides those off connections.

    • Dee Says:

I watched the video and I was really surprised at how much she “struggled”. I mean, she used to be SOLID everytime. Now it’s wobble-ridden and that could cost her the AA title in London…

I dont understand the connection of FHS, full, BHS.Ever since the FHS was added to that routine it has spelled trouble.

    • Gymsurfer Says:

I never cared for Jordyn’s beam. No grace, no personality, and way too many balance checks and missed connections. With the exception of her difficulty on floor I really don’t see what makes her so great. She doesn’t have that wow factor.

      • Kel Says:

I agree. She is missing that spark that Shawn and even Nastia had. She’s good, but she doesn’t excite me.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I agree that Jordan is rather mechanical looking. What makes her good is she is strong in all events and very reliable. I like her personally since she works hard and definitely is not annoying in any way, but her blandness will keep her from being considered one of the all-time memorable gymnatsts I think.

      • JAS4 Says:

I really like Jordyn’s floor especially when she does it like she did on day one of Nationals you can tell she really enjoys floor on day one of nationals I though she should have score higher than she did but I think they scored her lower to so she would be tied with Gabby

  16. Kel Says:

This second beam routine looked a lot better…I will give you that. But…unfortunately, it doesn’t matter. The team doesn’t need her for beam. They need her for bars. If her bars look like they did at Nationals, there is no way she is on the team.

  17. terrigymfan Says:

That was a good beam routine. I will say that when Nastia is on when on beam she has the most and effortless looking flips, forward and backward, I have ever seen. But in competition since she has been back she has looked bad in I think 5 out of 6 routines (bars and beam) she has attempted. I don’t hate her and don’t think she is unattractive or a bad person but do think she is out-of-shape and out-of-practice and therefoe has no business being considered for this yerar’s Olympic team,

    • Kel Says:

      Well said!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Beam was much better. It’s bars she should be worried about. They still look labored and Valerie is spotting/pushing her through the whole thing. It doesn’t look like she’s upgraded her bars set either.

    • Dee Says:

So true. I love her beam style more than any gymnast, ever. It flows and looks flawless. They always say a good beam routine looks as though it is being done on the floor and that’s exactly how she is most of the time.

I just think she ran out of time and did not approach this comeback in the right way. By the looks of her beam now, if she would have come back to competition, say, even a year earlier, I think she would be a major threat to the team. She just ran out of time/didnt give herself enough time to get ready.

  18. JAS4 Says:

Even though I’m not a Nastia fan that routine was much better than the other one there were two things though 1. doing the weird broken wrist thing with her hands(there are others who do it as well but she just does it more frequently lol) 2. Aly/Mustafina legs on the dismount

    • gymtruthteller Says:

There is a bar routine out that looks like her Nationals practice routine. Valeri pushes her through the pak, no dismount, off on her handstands but not as bad at Nationals. I am pmsing and a bit bitchy.lol so it is probably a good thing I won’t be around much until tomorrow night:)

      • JAS4 Says:

I just saw the video of Kyla’s Amanar her DTY is so much cleaner she had Aly legs on the Amanar

      • nero Says:

Really? I thought it looked great. I LOVE Aly, LOVE her. But people who are putting her on vault in TF need their head examined. I could never justify that thing scoring over 15.5 and the US needs all three of their vaults to score over that.

Ross or Douglas will vault in TF. I would rather it be Ross because I trust her.

If the team was 6 this year I think the US would be untouchable. Maroney AND Price on vault? Plus Price on bars instead of Jo. But this whole 5 member team is making everything a little cloudy.

      • JAS4 Says:

Wonder what Jordyn’s SV on bars is now with the upgraded dismount

      • nero Says:

It’s a 6.4 I think. The double layout is a D and the full-twist is an E (I’m pretty sure) If she lands it well it will be worth it but if she continues to take big steps it wont

Luckily for Jo if she’s not landing it well she can just go back to the double layout with no problem

She really needs to push up her handstands, if she can clean those up she can get 15’s at the Olympics

      • JAS4 Says:

I think that makes her SV close to Kyla’s doesn’t it? I wish Kyla would add the twist to her dismount off bars as well but I agree I think if Jordyn can clean up her bars she could score low 15s on bars which would be good if she has to be used for bars in TF

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Nastia with no bars routine should equal Nastia with no London Olympics. I still have a really bad feeling. I hope it’s just me anticipating the worst.

  19. Kel Says:

I just saw that bar routine. I agree it looks a little better than Nationals, but Valeri is pushing her through a lot of it. Will be interesting to see how she will do it on her own without a spot and with the dismount. What do you think her start value is? I thought she said it was a 6.5 at Nationals and it doesn’t look like she changed anything to it. There is also some video now of McKayla doing a pass on floor…looks pretty good and Kyla doing vault. It looks like she did an amanar to me. Looking good girls!

  20. Alex Says:

Just watched Nastia’s beam. I don’t think she looks any bigger than she did at nationals, and I think her switch ring looks better than at nationals… but I don’t think she is ready. There’s just not a place for her on this team. Maybe she’ll stick around for Worlds 2013.
Does anyone think that Bross thinks there’s a chance for her? I really wish that the age limits hadn’t been there in 2008. 😦 I hope she sticks around for Worlds. Big weekend! I’m pretty excited! 🙂

    • Catherine Says:

Nastia’s bars do not bode well being that heavily spotted. We’ll see, even if it’s fine she couldn’t really be trusted to emulate that again and again. Bross’ bars are fine, usable. But beam is a disaster and can’t be used purely for dismount. Maybe alternate but I would pick Price, Sloan, Finnegan and maybe Li over her.

    • Gymbee Says:

I am not looking forward to see Rebecca’s defeated face when (if) she is not announced to the team 😦

      • Dee Says:

ugh dont even say it….I was thinking of this the other night and it just kills me. I hope they dont pull a ’04 and do a good job of hiding the devistated faces.

      • JAS4 Says:

USAG twitter said they are going to tell the girls in the back before and then announce the team probably so that doesn’t happen again

      • nero Says:

They are not showing the girl’s reaction. They will be taken in the back, told and then the team marched out to be announced.

If I was an alternate I wouldn’t want to go back out onto the floor, just have my name announced. March the 5 out and then say the names of the alternates. But I’m sure they’ll have all 8 out there

I wonder if they’ll announce the name’s individually and they come walking out one by one, or the whole team will come out together

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Can’t help but wonder if some of them already “know” they won’t be on the team…I can’t imagine people like Brenna Dowell or whatever will be that shocked, they’re probably just like “cool I got to compete at the Trials.”

I can’t imagine Bross thinks she really deserves a spot either; even though she had potential a couple years ago she never hits her beam dismount and she’s not good enough on bars to be considered a specialist. She axed herself from this team by getting rid of floor.

I feel like the true “bubble” gymnasts are Finnegan, Price, Sloan, ASac, and Nastia. Which, on their own, would still constitute a really great Olympic team (sadly)…that’s how deep the US is. I can’t see Finnegan or Price really sad if they don’t make it; they pretty much know they are on the bubble I’m sure. Sloan and ASac have had an Olympics experience and both have said they would be fine either way if left off (although really happy if they make it), and Nastia I don’t really care about because no matter what her reaction will be smug.

  21. JAS4 Says:

  22. JAS4 Says:

I will be staying indoors this weekend if possible waiting for trials here in SC on Friday it will be 104 degrees, Saturday 107, and Sunday 105 lol

    • Dee Says:

WTF are you kidding? I’m in PA…it’s gonna be high 90’s. GROSS!

My butt will be on the couch ALL WEEKEND watching gymnastics. I told my husband that he better make like a ghost and disappear. He bothers the piss out of me when I try to watch TV, and he has no idea about gymnastics…so he sits there and laughs at falls and yells WOAHHHHHH obnoxiously loud, it just kills me hahahah.I will be picking up snacks on Friday and then not moving from my house the rest of the weekend. Thank god the gym is closed.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah it’s going to be ridiculously hot in the summer here it’s easily got up to 110-115 and to top it off it’s almost always extremely humid lol

    • nero Says:

I’m in Colorado, not only have we had a week straight of 100+ days but there are 12 fires burning right now!

I’m going camping Friday and Saturday but luckily my parents have a dish so I can watch gymnastics all the way up in the mountains!

    • Catherine Says:

It’s a humid 55 here! I’m not joking, it’s humid and a really good temp for here ha.

      • JAS4 Says:

Ok I’m moving there lol 55 is more my kind of weather I don’t like the heat at all lol

    • terrigymfan Says:

We’re having just about the same weather here in Dallas as you are in SC JAS4. I am like you Dee with my husband (and my daughters too) — I want to be alone and not bothered answering silly questions when I am watching gymnastics. I am also not interested in “multitasking” while I am watching gymnastics. None of this, “Honey how about making me a sandwich at the next commercial.” Hubby and daughters must fend for themselves when gymnastics are on!

      • Gymbee Says:

I just found out that my in-laws will be coming over to London “to feel the Olympic spirit” during the whole week of gymnastics! I took those days off work to see it on tv – and I’ve made it clear that the channel will stay on gym and if anyone suggests switching to another sport, that person will die haha! Also no talking to me or to each other in the same room as the TV!

      • terrigymfan Says:

Here is an example of stupid questions someone might ask:

        Q. So, how many gymnasts make the team?
        A. Five
        Q. So I suppose that means the top five finishers at trials make the team?
        A. Are you stupid! The scores at trials have nothing to do with who makes the team. You obviously don’t know a thing about USA Gymnastics.

      • Gymbee Says:

Yap!! Or having to explain ad nauseum why the girl with the super-hard routine who stepped out of bounds still win over the one with the super-easy who didn’t. Not in the mood for any explaining when I watch my gymnastics haha 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’m irritated going to the USAG FB page right now for the same reason. It’s like all the morons come out every four years with their questions. The worst is the 20+ questions about the television streaming, “which channel will it be on? what is the TV schedule?”…I mean c’mon in this day of age with the Internet, people can’t figure that out for themselves? Plus they can just scroll less than a centimeter down on their screens and the answer is right there, just under where some other idiot posted the same questions.

And hah, that’s funny about the “top five AA gymnasts” making it. Just shows what the consensus of “fair” is – and that is exactly the opposite of how these teams are chosen. Although in this quad, if it were the top five it would pretty much be the same team as we’ve all decided except Maroney – instead of Maroney it would be Price. Really sucks for Price. I

      • JAS4 Says:

My husband will probably be working late during trials and I have two small children so I will be feeding them dinner and giving them a bath and putting pajamas on them early and then put on a Disney movie on their tv and let them watch it although they do like to watch gymnastics but then I have to stop them from trying to use the ottoman as a vault and fling themselves over on to the couch

      • terrigymfan Says:

LOL. It’s fun raising a family but things are never so simple as just sitting down and watching a movie or sports event for a couple of hours, are they? I wish I could say things get easier once they become preteens and teens but they don’t. Now it’s all about coordinating in advance to make sure my hubby is available to get them to and from any activities and otherwise handle any issues that come up. So I made sure he knew well in advance that “no, Friday and Sunday nights are not good nights for you to go out with the guys.”

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah my children (my son is three and a half and my daughter just turned two) usually go to bed around 9 so I may just put them in the recliner with me while I watch gymnastics and they might just fall asleep lol my husband works in the restaurant business so he is usually working late on the weekends

      • Gymbee Says:

Aww hahaha Jas that is so cute! 🙂 Good call on the Disney movie!

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah my son says he wants to do the man gymnastics not the girl gymnastics my daughter just stares at the tv every time she sees someone on bars lol and if all else fails they love that Disney show Jessie and I have the watch Disney app on my phone so they can watch Jessie while I watch gymnastics lol

      • Gymbee Says:

Yeah Jessie is a fun show with all those kids 🙂 (I work for Disney Channel haha.)

      • JAS4 Says:

Lol my daughter starts pouting every time Jessie goes off lol I keep episodes recorded on the dvr and we have the Disney on demand channel lol they like Good Luck Charlie as well

      • terrigymfan Says:

JAS, you ought to consider taking you kids on a Disney Cruise when they get a little older. We tooks our girls on one a few years ago and they absolutely loved it.

      • JAS4 Says:

We have talked about doing that I think they would enjoy it 🙂 my Mother-in-law suggested doing a family trip to Disney world this summer but I think the kids are still to young for that though

      • gymtruthteller Says:

My nieces would love Disney world and I have been trying to talk my sister into taking them. They love the princesses.

      • JAS4 Says:

Lol my daughter hasn’t really got in to the princesses yet but my niece loves them she is older than my children though my daughter loves Minnie Mouse though that’s the theme we did for her birthday and she loved it lol

      • terrigymfan Says:

It’s just my opinion but I think your kids are probably a little young for a Disney Cruise too. Anywhere from five to ten would be the best ages for them to really get the full enjoyment.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I was thinking about maybe doing Santa land in the mountains of NC which is more for their age group

  23. Luke Says:

Marta was watching Nastia’s bars in the dismount clip video…and she was liking it! lol

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I saw her watching. I would be more concerned given that Nastia is still being heavily spotted by Valerie.

    • Kel Says:

I noticed that too. If she only was being judged on the dismount, she could go to London. I just don’t think she will be able to pull the whole routine together.

      • JAS4 Says:

I think in Marta’s mind Nastia is already on the team since she was saying that she has an ideal team in mind and that Nastia’s bars look promising

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The start value is 6.5 if she connects everything. The second handstand in her combination was over the degree for 3 tenths off and then the forth handstand was short after the combination. The pak salto is a mess. I don’t know what she missed but she only got a 5.7 start value at Nationals which means something she was off on was not credited. Not sure what.

There are a lot of deductions in that routine. There is no way she would get over an 8.50 in execution. That dismount is a mess even if she stands it up.

I guess we will see what the judges do. It will depend on if Marta wants her on the team or not because we all know she controls the judges.

I’ll tell you right now there is no way in hell she should score better then Kyla or Jordyn with that routine and I would add Anna Li into that mix too. Her start value could be a 6.9 if she adds the twist on the dismount.

  24. JAS4 Says:

I think the next round of podium training will start again soon so hopefully there will be more videos

  25. JAS4 Says:

    • Gymbee Says:

I just saw that! If you strain your eyes a bit you can see the bars yay. I want to see if Nastia does a full routine. Might need a magnifying glass haha.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I saw it from my phone and I was like there’s no way I can watch this lol

      • Gymbee Says:

Anna Li and Gabby did good routines (all I can see is that they didn’t fall haha!)
Someone sat down her Amanar, but then did 5 good ones in a row (I suspect it was Kyla.)

      • Gymbee Says:

Nastia actually did a routine with her (bad) dismount. Looks like Valeri was pushing her through most of it though (I just him flailing his arms)

  26. Catherine Says:

Gabby has sat down several amanars but stood some up fine too. Kyla struggling with landings on hers. Gabby also having issues with..handstands on bars! These are some interesting quick hits, can’t wait for videos. Let’s all hope Gabby gets rid of these jitters now while it doesn’t matter. Anna’s bars looks great apparently, Sarah’s and McKayla’s much improved but Sarah fell once..Aly having issues too.

  27. JAS4 Says:

  28. Kel Says:

What do you think her score would be with that routine? What is her start value? I see what you mean about the lack of handstands…wonder if she will actually get deducted for that or if the judges will ignore her lack of handstands.

  29. JAS4 Says:

    Lies from Marta

  30. Melissa Says:

GTT are you live blogging tomorrow?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

What is tomorrow? Sorry I have no clue. I thought Trials started on Friday?

Okay I looked it up. Mens starts tomorrow. I’ll try. It depends on me being home plus I can only be on the internet downstairs and I might have to fight the boy for TV rights.lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Never mind. I just looked at the time. I won’t be home at 2 (5) so probably not

      • JAS4 Says:

Thought I would puke reading this lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

and you wanted us all to puke so you sent the interview along.lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Of course she supported you Nastia, you were her pet. Moceanu fell on her ass and nearly cost the US the gold medal even though she was set up to be the gymnast that clinches said gold (unfairly, Both Karolyi gymnasts going last and second to last on vault was a joke) and be the hero.

      • JAS4 Says:

Lol I thought everyone might b amused by Nastia’s extreme butt kissing lol

(I wonder if Shawn and Gabby are really as close as Shawn claims they are lol)

        (Alicia interview confirming no floor)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Bye Alicia. No floor, no Olympic team.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I agree I was hoping she’d have a floor because if she had a floor she’d likely be at least an alternate but I doubt it now because there are plenty of beam/vault people so the alternates will probably be bars/floor/AA girls I think she knows that though

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I think she’ll be an alternate. Sucks because the two apparatuses she’s good at are not what US needs right now. But if someone is injured (i.e., Maroney or Aly) she can step in…especially if she can get a floor by then. Marta would take ASac over someone like Price or even Finnegan for sure. I think she’s proven that she won’t make the same mistake again at the Olympics.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

…oh, and I’m sure Gabby is sick and tired of questions about Shawn. And I’m also pretty doubtful they are “close.” Yeah, right. Just like Nastia and Shawn are “close.”

      • JAS4 Says:

It seemed like for awhile that Alica and Bridget we friends with Shawn but I think after everyone found out she had quit training and had to keep the secret til she announced her retirement so she could get more endorsements and all she probably lost a lot of gymnast friends

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I really get the impression and this is all speculation on my part that those 3 were kind of fed up with the way Marta was allowing Nastia to do what she wanted. No camps, no problem. “I have an injury but am out buying coffee and hanging out with my friends” gets a free pass to the Olympic Trials while they were all working their ass’s off after injuries cannot go over well with gymnasts really training.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

And about ASac/alternate…the only bars/floor alternate I can think of is Price…or Sloan if Sloan does better on her floor. Hrm.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

So there you have it. The team should be Jordyn, Aly, Gabby, Kyla, and Maroney. If it’s not, Marta’s a liar. LOL.

      • JAS4 Says:

I’m sure Marta will come up with some exception for Nastia especially after how Nastia sang Marta’s praises in that interview after Marta once again didn’t bother to deny Dom’s accusations lol She is trying to kiss Marta’ butt all the way to London lol

  31. nero Says:

Shawn is so fake when it comes to the other girls. “I’m going to London to cheer on my sisters” GAG

More like “I’m going to London to increase my face time on tv to get back on Dancing with the Stars….PLEASE PICK ME DWTS my knee can handle it, I swear!!!!!”

    • gymtruthteller Says:

lol she doesn’t need to go to the Olympics to get that DWTS gig but lol I agree with you about the face time.

      • JAS4 Says:

I have always been a Shawn fan but lately the constant publicity crap is really getting old lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Maybe she believes herself when she says this crapola.lol

      • JAS4 Says:

Lol maybe she believes that she is still “inspiring” people like she did with her gymnastics by making tons of money and getting lots of face time cause it’s totally like the same thing….Not! Lol I think she is trying to ride the fame train as long as possible because she knows the fame train will stop after the Olympics unless she gets on DWTS lol

      • nero Says:

She’ll find some way to insert herself in our lives one way or the other. This is the same girl who said she missed the paparazzi after moving from LA back to Iowa

So she’s going to be a correspondent? I bet she’ll have 400 interviews with other athletes and none with the gymnasts.

I would actually die if Shawn had to interview Nastia at the Olympics, can you imagine the side-eyeing and glares they would throw back at each other? The .gifs would be priceless

    • Gymbee Says:

Hahaha yep! I have a list on twitter that’s called “gymnastics” and it’s so awkward. The other girls are posting about gym stuff and there’s tweets from gym blogs and then every third tweet is Shawn “are you a bring it mom? Bounty and I would love to hear stories about you spilling stuff and making a mess” or whatever it is she’s on about.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I know I am a major Shawn fan and even I am sooooo sick of the annoying as f*ck Bounty tweets. And then the Nike workout or whatever. For someone who was just so “bummed” to retire from gymnastics it sure didn’t slow her down when it came to promoting herself. I wonder if she’ll even be at Olympic Trials. If she’s as “close” to those girls as she says she is she better be there.

I also have to wonder how her whole career/life would be different if she had won say a SILVER on beam instead of gold. You never see her other Olympic medals come out, only that one. She’s branded as “Olympic gold medalist” so that win on beam was totally her meal ticket. I can’t help but think if she had not won any gold medals in Beijing she’d still be around, fighting – because none of the sponsors would really be as excited to endorse a silver medalist. Just sayin. It’s different with Kwan because she reigned for YEARS and was at the top of her game for a looong time. Johnson was really only around for like two years, tops.

I think the fight was too easy to give up when all the sponsors came back in the months leading up to London. Just like her taking the two to three years off after Beijing – she was running around doing nothing but promoting herself. I have to wonder that as the interest wore off (two years after the Olympics), it was only then that she considered coming back to gymnastics.

And now I have to laugh because this is her last hurrah before she is dethroned by the new squad. Although the only girls I can see that are even capable of dethroning her (personality wise) are Gabby or McKayla.

      • JAS4 Says:

When her comeback first started it seemed genuine but I kind of wonder if she wasn’t missing the attention not the sport as well but it seems like she has changed so much since 08 she always used to seem so genuine but now she usually seems fake or attention seeking

      • Dee Says:

I never was a fan of the phenoms, like Shawn or Carly that one day *BOOM* they do well at a big meet or two, and then win gold at the Olympics and their careers really were just…one or two good years. I’ve always been more apt to be a fan of the Nastia-types with long, progression-like careers that finally culminate at the Olympics or Worlds, after watching them struggle and fight for a long time.

I think that’s what bothers me about Shawn sometimes. She was not really…around that much…but now she is everywhere. The whole “Mary Lou” effect where every Olympics a new “American Sweetheart” has to be choosen from the gymnastics team drives me crazy.

I think the gymnastics comeback came from being bored, and feeling as though she had nothing else to be doing with her life at the time. It didnt seem like it came out of passion or a want to be back at the Olympics as an athlete. I didnt buy the whole “after my knee injury my first thought was ‘am I done with gymnastics” story for some reason.

      • nero Says:

My favorite thing was that for almost 4 years she touted herself as the *youngest* member of the USA Gymnastics Team

        Bridget must have been like………what?

      • terrigymfan Says:

Actually, I think most of these comeback attempts come from being bored. They think it will be great to retire and not have to do all that training and then they don’t know what to do with themselves. Nastia, Shawn, Zmeskal, Moeanu — I think all of them got bored or weren’t sure what to do with themselves and then turned back to familiar ground.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Shawn could have just gone to college. I think she was almost scared her gravy train was going to leave the station so the only way she knew how to get on board again was to go back to the thing that got her there in the first place. Then, when sponsors started piling up and opportunities came her way (during the Olympic year) it was probably too easy to just give up training and go out and grab those opportunities, especially when Team USA was so deep and Marta obviously was not planning on including you in her mental line up. Things were starting to slow down when she originally “came back” to gymnastics – do you think she would have done this comeback if, for instance, she got the opportunity to have her own TV show or be a permanent judge on DWTS or something like that?

If Shawn really was worried about never doing gymnastics again, she could have focused just on bars and beam – she would have been better than Bross and potentially could have raised her bars start value to equal Nastia’s. I don’t really buy “there wasn’t enough time” because she was upgrading and had a DTY vault and a new bars routine to boot. If it was floor that was giving her issues, she could have done what most of the others did and gave that up, kept with a solid DTY, and got her beam difficulty back to ’08 standards (she was pretty much there by the end of ’11) and focus on upping her bars work.

        Oh well.

      • JAS4 Says:

I didn’t understand either why she didn’t just do bars/beam if her knee couldn’t handle floor/vault if she really wanted to be on the team so bad and at least show up to classics and if she didn’t think she could make it after that then bow out
