Chinese and Romanian Nationals

Both are taking place right now.  The AA for the Chinese is the 5th or 6th of September and Larisa Iordache won Romanian Nationals.

For all the results of Chinese Nationals, this tumblr blog has them.

Fan Yilin on bars. According to that Chinese blog above she isn’t training with the National team but her FIG license was recently renewed and everyone is hoping she gets sent to Worlds. Her bar routine has a 6.3 or 6.4 start value. She is very much a sentimental favorite of mine after what happened to her at the Olympics last year. The blatant cheating to keep her out of the bar finals to make sure Aliya won still pisses me off.

Anyone find it ironic the Chinese judges can find nearly 3 points off in deductions on their gymnasts but the US judges can only find little over a point in Ashton Kutcher’s beam routine.lol

All of Larisa’s AA routines. I like you hope she wins Worlds but only if Shang Chunsong doesn’t 🙂 Honestly all of the top competitors seem great. Even Ragan doesn’t bother me as much as she bothers everyone else. Angelina Melnikova, Elena Eremina ( and the million spelling versions of her name) the only one I don’t particularly care for is Riley so she will probably win:)

I still don’t see Riley being able to handle the pressure, so I doubt she’ll win worlds. I see her as a solid 5th or 6th. I wish Shang could get a dty, without it she’s just not competitive unless everyone else falters.

  2. dianajc99 Says:

Ok is a deduction on the turns to not be in a recognized position? Like Posse, coupe, attitude, straight leg above horizontal?
Both Lari and shang are shin to shin in their turns

    • Gymbot Says:

It’s a minor deduction if they take it. I think the FIg made a video on it in 2013 on appropriate leg positions

  3. imperatorcarolus Says:

I don’t mind Ragan, but that’s just it. I don’t mind her, but I will probably won’t remember her in a couple of years, like, I don’t know, Jana Bieger or other USA seniors who were candidates to Worlds and then faded with the advance of other truly memorable gymnasts who were injuried or junior when they had their chance. But Larissa, Shang, Eremina, Sanne, Lieke, Yang, Liu even Melnikova if she has a good day or Iliankova’s bars, they are absolutely stunning and I think there are at least four or five gymnast in a very wathered down World Championships that can, potentially, score better than her at USA nationals, even with her being a bit overscored (except the Chinese, all the gymnasts are a little overscored in home competitions). There is no way that her beam or floor will get that scores with international judges, especially given how strict they are being on floor and beam. Ragan had 57.400/57.850 on P&G Championships and she will probably had a point, point and half less on competition, because some of those scores are way too high. Chiles had 55.850-56.000 and Riley, 56.100 and 55.550, also a little overscored. Larissa had over 58.000 points and she can even do better, because we have seen her having higher scores in UB and floor. Melnikova had a 57.650 as an average of two days with a fall on first day and Eremina had a 56.100 with a fall on vault and a 12.850 score. She will usually be around high 57.000’s. The most important Chinese AAers had a score around high 55, but you know the Chinese are always more strict, so they will probably be around 57.00’s as well (without any falls, of course). If you add another possibilities like Mai Mukarami (with scores near 57.000 as well) and Lieke Wevers (who, in a good day, can go near 56.000 and there are rumours of vault improvement), Ragan and Riley can potentially go from 2nd (Lari, without falls, has way better scores than any of them) all to ninth. It’s the first time in years that USA don’t have a sure podium in AA Worlds in predictions (with Simone and Aly, it was clear, but before with Jordyn, and Shawn and such, they were clear favourites. Even with Bross they were almost sure of an AA medal). It seems this Worlds are going to be way more interesting than I thought.

    • imperatorcarolus Says:

And Elsabeth Black, I forgot Elsabeth Black. Rebeca Andrade also looks good and she regained her Amanar. I am sad Flavia Saravia can’t go to Worlds, she would have a good chance to medal. And the European bronze medalist Melania Dos Santos should have been taken into account, too.

  4. imperatorcarolus Says:

Regarding Shang, I would love for her to get a medal, but not over Lari. I had dropped her from my AA predictions/wishes because she said she wasn’t going to do AA this year, as she was recovering for an injury. Vault seems really trying for her, so if she is not at her best physically, I would understand for her to drop that event and focus on Beam and bars. But as she has competed AA in Chinese nationals, maybe she will try it. In any case, I don’t think she can surpass Lari in competition, especially if she hasn’t improved her vault. And there are at least another four Chinese gymnasts ahead of her in Nationals, so maybe she won’t be selected for the AA at all. But I hope she gets a medal. I don’t care in which event and of which color. I think she really deserves it.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I didn’t say she would beat her I said I want her to win. Shang didn’t have her full start values during prelims of her Nationals so we will see what she can upgrade . I agree about her vault. Larisa is very inconsistent so I expect her to fall at least once at worlds.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Lari seems pretty consistent lately, but if she has to fall, I hope she does it at the quals or event finals and not at the AA competition. She is really my favourite. Regarding Shang, I’ll wait to see her videos, but her scores don’t seem very high in any apparatus and she seems to be still on the mend. She seems to have grown a little, too. But I hope she gets a medal in a near future. I really like her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Sorry but no she doesn’t. She’s fallen off beam at least 2 or 3 times so far this year and I am pretty sure she fell off bars at least once.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

It depends of what we understand as consistency regarding each gymnasts. She is not Simone consistent right now, but she is not like Seda either. She hit 7/7 on Nationals and 6/7 on the Universiade and she wasn’t at her best at Europeans. She hit 4/4 at 2015 World Championship finals as well, for example, after a general meltdown at quals. So it is true that she is not the most consistent of gymnasts, but she is not a total headcase. There was times when she hit everything or almost everything in the past, so I think she can do it again.

  5. imperatorcarolus Says:

Romania is a mess. You just have to look at the higher scores after Lari (in a home competition, so they tend to be higher) and they are worrying. I mean, I would be really happy with those scores in Spain, but Romania, if they want to opt for the medals, can’t have their top gymnasts with scores in the range of the low 13.000 in the best of cases. UB are not their only problem anymore. They have had that problem for more than twenty years (I was watching on YouTube 2000 Olympics and the NBC’s commentator…not the most annoying one (the one that is always saying “oh, boy”), the less albeit still annoying one, was saying that the Romanian had been having problems in UB for years), and they got by. But they usually could compensate it with their consistency and high scores in the other three apparatus. But now, they aren’t even able to have high scores in their main apparatus, beam, even to reach event finals. If we scratch Lari and Cata off, I can think without any effort of twelve or more gymnasts that has better scores than Golgota, Holbura or Crisan without effort, so there are probably many more. And on floor the scores are even more worrying. How could they compensate as a team their problems with bars if they are unable to even present, not outstanding, but just competitive, scores in the other three events? Even Cata is now faltering. She got in today’s event finals with the eight and last score of Romania and had a lot of problems of floor. It was very strange, because it was the same routine we have been watching her do since 2004, but I think she is trying to add connections because she knows that competition is fierce in this apparatus this year, and she won’t be a main contender for the medals if she doesn’t change anything. But she is not as consistent as she used to be, and her floor shows problems as well. I think that, if she doesn’t get good results this year, she will do the same as Bolt and go when she is still high enough. But in any case, Romania has a global problem that I don’t know how they can resolve. Other countries, like Ukrania and Belarus, never recovered from their own crises.

  6. imperatorcarolus Says:

Swiss Championships: Giulia Steingruber won AA. I didn’t think she would be back this year after her surgery, but she is. With that title, she will go to Worlds for sure, but given her scores, she is still on the mend. In any case, I will be glad to see her.

  7. imperatorcarolus Says:

    Romanian event finals:

Vault: Denisa Gólgota, Ioana Crisan, Silvia Sfiringu.
UB: Larisa Iordache, Carmen Ghiciuc, Maria Holbura.
Beam: Larisa Iordache, Catalina Ponor, Ioana Stanciulescu.
Floor: Larisa Iordache, Catalina Ponor, Denisa Gólgota.

Lari officially got the highest AA score of the year, including all the national competitions up to date.

Also, there are rumours that Diana Bulimar has retired, as her coach has been asked about her during the Nationals. It is not confirmed.

  8. imperatorcarolus Says:

Romanian event final scores and results (this time complete): https://thegymter.net/2017/09/02/2017-romanian-championships-results/. Take a look at UB results. More than point separates Lari from the second place and that in a good day. The difference between Lari and Cata and the rest are astounding. Raducan said today publicly that the problem were not the gymnasts, but the coaches. I think they have more problems, but it a step ahead from blaming only the gymnasts as the Karolys did after Rio quals.

    • Gymbot Says:

The coaches drove away talents pre-London by forcing their athletes to compete when they were too injured, dismissed the depth of the team the following year, and later could not keep the motivation of an entire quad of seniors, Ocolisan aside. And they still don’t have a Bars coach. If you can’t get someone to come to Romania send your coaches away to learn ASAP

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

I agree the coaches are a huge problem, but not the only one. All you say it’s true, but there are also administrative problems (those coaches are there because they were mantained by the authorities, who supported them even when they publicly critized their athletes after Rio and chose to take back old coaches intead of investing in new talents), they also attract less potential gymnasts, because the system of selecting potential athletes and taking them to Deva isn’t working as well as in the past and that needs to change as well, lack of funding and new equipament, (Nadia Comaneci said recently that she didn’t saw much difference in the equipment and instalations she trained in from now)… So I agree the coaches are part of the problem, but not the only one Romanian federation has and needs to address to make significant change. But Raducan declaring that aren’t the gymnasts who are to blame is a welcome change from Rio’s time.

  10. Gymbot Says:

GTT, do you remember you wrote an article about Larissa’s bars, back in 2014? Well she may have surprised you again. Her dismount and modified connections give her 6.2, or 6.7 in the old code. I’m shocked!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I remember it because she improved her form during that time too. I just remember her being bad at bars and then one day she was just that much better. I don’t remember much abut her recent bars I will have to go back and watch.

  11. imperatorcarolus Says:

China’s World Team announced: Liu Tingting, Luo Han, Fan Yilin (got your wish, GTT) and Wang Yan. Good team, but I will miss Shang like crazy. I hope to see her at her best next year.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I am glad Fan Yilin gets to go and am extra glad I didn’t go to Worlds. No Daria. No Shang. Only gymnast I will really miss seeing is Kohei.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Daria is going to gymsberia fast. Eremina and Iliankova surpass her in difficulty and her execution and consistency hasn’t been the best, so I don’t think she is going to be choosen back for big competitions barring injuries of the rest. But you never know. I though that Valentina would never take Kramarenko again to big competitions after the vault debacle of 2007 and she took her to Beijing Olympics, so who knows?

  12. imperatorcarolus Says:

This article hints at Shang’s retirement (I really hope not!) but there is no official confirmation: https://gymtruthteller.wordpress.com/2017/09/02/chinese-and-romanian-nationals/#comment-95900

Confirmed Russian team for worlds: Eremina, Paseka, Iliankova and Melnikova. Pretty much as expected. I don’t agree with Iliankova’s choice (nothing personal: just it is the same thing as with Spiri. You have another two other gymnasts who can potentially medal in UB and she is an one event gymnast).

    • gymtruthteller Says:

hat did she say that made you think she is coming back?

      • Gymbot Says:

This was published back in march. Same old: inspire a generation, my mom helped me so much I owe her a lot. What’s new to me is Serena Williams is her role model for not giving a shit about what people say about her. She also says if you have a talent use it, but know you can be eclipsed by those who work harder than you. Truth

Cata had another two falls at the Wolrd Cup that is taken place in Hungary (it has a name I can even begin to try to write) and with a hit floor, just a little over 14 (but, given what we saw at Europeans, looks rights). It is really odd for Cata to fail that much.

Tabea Alt’s UB in German National Selection for World. YOU ALL HAVE TO SEE IT! When you see it, you will understand the need for capitals. Event finals in Beam and UB are going to be so interesting this year:

    • Cupquaked Says:

The changing ads was SUPER distracting. Who thought that was a good idea at a gymnastics meet??

But also, damn. Tabea Alt for worlds UB champ.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

I’ll try to look for a video with a better angle. I suppose that the changing adds mean more money, as you can fit as many companies as you want. In any case, the set is marvellous, I love it. And Seitz’s is very good, too.

Any news of when EEUU is going to announce their team?

      • Gymbot Says:

That’s two original moves for Alt, the zuchold with half turn to catch the low bar and the stalder into the front tuck half out dismount? Anyone know what she was awarded? The skills are tough to see from that angle, I see toe on pirouette, Maloney, pak; VLW to Alt?; chow 1/2; stalder half to jaeger stretched; alt2? Im guessing 6.1 assuming the dismount is a D rated skill

      • Gymbot Says:

USA announces at the end of the camp, not sure when that is

      • Gymbot Says:

Also for uneven bars, Jonna Aldertag from sweden is back with an impressive set from the current World Cup. Jaeger stretched; church to pak, Maloney to baharwaj; shaposhnikova to clear hip pirouette, DLO dismount. B+ form, 6.2 D

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Nina Derwael’s UB with a 6.1-6.2 should be taken into accout, too.

      • Cupquaked Says:

After the selection camp, from past experience. But who knows. Valeri might want to keep it a secret or whatever.

I’m thinking this years world team will be Ragan,

      • Cupquaked Says:

Oops. My team is NOT just Ragan. Ideally I’d like for cloning technology to be perfected and we send a team made up entirely of Simone Biles + clones. But that won’t happen. 😂

So I think Ragan and McCusker for AA and both will probably qualify for bars (if we don’t take Ashton Kutcher) and beam. Ragan will also qualify for floor probably. Then Jade Carey for vault/floor and maybe Trinity Thomas to fill out floor. They always like to have 3 that could get into EF. Bars: Ragan, Riley, Ashton. Beam: Ragan, Riley, Trinity. Vault: Jade. Lol. Floor: Ragan, Riley, Trinity/Jade.

Alternates would be Kutcher/Trinity as the alternate. I would guess they aren’t too keen on trying for bars because the international field is pretty stacked in that event. Somehow, the US is weak on vault all of a sudden and that’s disappointing. Of all EF, that one is probably the easiest to get 2 into but the hardest to win. So I’m not sure why they aren’t encouraging more girls to try for it.

Honestly, Jade Carey could also go for the AA. So, realistically the team will probs be Ragan, Riley, Jade, and Ashton. With Trinity as alternate.

I’d be surprised if it went any other way. If this weren’t an individual worlds, my team prediction would be completely different. But this team has the maximum medal potential for the EF. So I think it makes the most sense. Those who know way more about gymnastics though may disagree.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Regarding the possible USA team, if I were Valeri (God, what an unsettling thought) I would take three AAers and a Floor specialist. The reasoning is that both the UB and Beam are two fields with a lot of especialists in them this year and Ragan, which is their best AAer right now, got the best score at Nationals in beam and Riley (who is going too) got the same at UB. I think it is not a good approach to get an especialist in two apparatus with a great competition which is not even the best option in your own country. That is what happens to Locklear. She is just a one event especialist who got defeated in Nationals by another teammate and who is not really competitive in a Worlds Event finals because this year, the UB field is packed. Including Riley, there is at least another nine especialists right now that have better D score than Ashton and she was not great in execution at Nationals. Fan Yilin, Liu Tingting, Eremina, Iliankova, Alt, Seitz, Ragan, Nina Darwael, Joanna Alderg, Melanie Dos Santos, even Iordache, to name a few, has better D scores than Ashton, who only had a 5.5 when all the above and others have plus 6. Even when there are rumours that she is going to increase her difficulty to a 6.0, we haven’t seen it yet and it could not become a reality. Last year, for instance, we were talking long about supposed new vaults for the Olimpic finals that could increase competition for Simone that were never competed. So with the information we have now, Locklear doesn’t make any sense, She would have need for a lot of rivals to screw up in quals only for qualifying to UB event finals. In beam happens something similar. Your suppossed AAers, Ragan and Riley, are the top in this apparatus. The thrid ranked, Trinity Thomas, which I liked a lot, only has a 5.5 score of difficulty and a very shaky execution. If you take Trinity as specialist, you have the same problem than with Locklear: there is a lot of people, including her own teammates, who can potentially score much, much better than her and she won’t probably make to the finals. Iordache, Ponor, Sanne, Lieke, both chinese, Ragan, Riley, Eremina, Melnikova, Marine Boyer, Eythora, Alt, and some more have higher possibilities than her. So to take a beam specialist wouldn’t give USA much more medal potential either, with their best beamers as AAers.

So that left us with especialist on floor and vault. The problem with vault is that you only have Carey, given that the rumours about Chiles’ second vault hasn’t been seen in competition yet this year. Could be an option; vault is a weak field right now. Carey has two vaults of 5.6 and 5.800, competitive ones, but her execution is inconsistent, especially in her 5.8 vault. She could be a possibility, but not a secure one. She will probably make it to the finals, but she is not a secure option for a medal in the way Simone and Maroneey or even Sacramone were in the past. Her two tenths of difficulty over other competitors (most have 5.6-5.4 vaults) give her just a little edge that has to be backed up by execution.

But on floor, USA has good chances. As vault, is a weak field right now and most of the gymansts who had more medal potential here retired from Worlds, like Downie, are not at their best like Ponor, or are inconsistent, like Melnikova. There EEUU can go two for two easily if they take an specialist.

Also, the AA field is weak if we compare it to the UB or beam finals. So I would try to assure the AA bringing three AAers with a specialist on floor. Said AAers also have medal potential in event finals and the third highest score AAers would maximize the potential for two AA medals in case Riley or Reagan didn’t score that well in international competition (there were very overscored in Nationals) or any of them have a bad competition. USA has always liked to confront their AAers in international competitions to see who scored better, results that sometimes weren’t the same as in home competition. And a floor specialist. So for me it would be the top three AAers (Ragan, Riley and Chiles) and Carey as vault/floor specialist, as she was the second higher score in floor. Ashton doesn’t make much sense in this team with a D. score so low and such a packed field in UB and the third scoring person in beam doesn’t make sense either, as both the chosen AAers have higher scores than her. USA’s better options for individual medals are, in my opinion, AA, floor and possibly vault, but they are not as secure as in the past. Things are interesting this year. USA could as easily bring home six medals (two on the AA, two on floor, one on vault and one on beam) or none at all. That is almost unprecedent since 2002.Afterwards, we almost always had some USA gymansts that we could be reasonably sure that would bring home medals.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

And I like Simone as much as the next person, as she is amazing, but this year things are much more interesting. Last year everything was like Simone is going to win everything, rightfully so, but still it left very little room for surprises. In some bronzes, but I like this year’s possibilities more because of the surprise factor.
