Beam and Floor

Just watched the floor finals and after reading all of your comments before I watched I would have had it Biles, Nichols, Shang.

All had form issues (Even Simone had bent knee’s on the Biles and bent her knee during her double wolf turn) and as much as I usually like Afan on floor this routine does nothing for me. She is also as messy as everyone else in her tumbling. Sae has a great routine but she lost a lot on her first pass or I would be complaining more.

I also don’t love Lieke’s floor routine as much as everyone else. A double tuck wouldn’t have been good enough at the 88 Olympics let alone backing into a 2015 World Championships. Too many turns and she still only got a 5.4 start value I also don’t find her dance as pretty as everyone else.

As for the rest Fragpane is too spastic tho her tumbling was great during this final but I find Ellie Downie very heavy. Her Piked double arabian piked was nice tho.

I would have given Shang the bronze but she needs to clean up her twisting form. The crossing on her legs is probably why Afan and Maggie were ahead of her. People talked about Maggie’s form being messy in her tumbling but not on that double double or Full in.

All and all I once again fund myself annoyed at the underscoring of the Chinese especially on bars and beam but I am off to finish that final so I’ll get back to you. I’m watching Kohei win high bar Gold (FINALLY) Suck it Leyva.Aw Yin giving Kohei a hug was cute. Leyva has a higher start value but his very messy stalder 1.1 ( hey that’s what the announcer called it) was his downfall. Kohei has better extension then Leyva and catches the bar with mostly straight arms so suck it Leyva.:)

I also want to comment on men’s vault. Dagelescu was ROBBED. Does he have perfect form? nope but he does his vault better than anyone else and how the hell the guy that beat him got credit for a piked Dragelescu with his second twist was tucked and his legs 2 feet apart is RIDICULOUS. Thank you 🙂

Don’t fall Fabian. Nooooooo. He looks so tired. YOU HAD ONE JOB FABIAN. I still love you and it must suck to blow a chance to win with the bad formed Epke not competing when you should have won last year.

Anyone else notice how people don’t seem very warm to Kohei? Kohei seems very reserved so it could be that or it could be they all suck and can’t beat him so their ego’s can’t handle it.

  1. Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

zi’ll take hong, peseka and biles on vt
    komova,shang and daria on UB

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I like your UB but I would really love Daria or Shang to win.

On vault I want Guilia to sneak in for bronze and Paeska to win but I can’t believe I just said that. lol

Simone’s vault is too low for her to win IMO even with execution but these judges seem to want to give ehr every gold.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I also can’t believe I am going to say this but if Kocian hits her bars I would even be fine with her winning a bronzxe. If this girls gets through every competition without a fall she deserves a medal

  2. Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

all I really want from EF is maggie and lieke to win a medal.

    • H Says:

It would be fun if Peseka win vault and if Steingruber, Shang and Scheder makes the podium.

      Vault: Paseka, Hong, Steingruber,
      UB: Daria/Komova, Shang, Scheder,

      • JAS4 Says:

There are several on each event I would like to see medal but not enough medals unless there are ties for bronze that can’t be broken because they have the same d and e score lol

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

My UB ideal podium: Gabby doesn’t medal. That’s it.

    • gymbot Says:

Lieke’s sister Sanne Wevers is in the BB final with Thorsdottir

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

With Steingruber injured (and SCS already moving in and taking the place on Fasana as first reserve), Lieke will also be competing in floor finals, as of right now.

  3. Exgymgurl Says:

    isnt something on nbc today?

  4. Gymnast41 Says:

I’m thinking hong, paseka, biles or paseka, hong, biles. It seems as though Simone’s vault is getting worse in execution competition as each event goes so I’m thinking she won’t necessarily win this one. But definitely think she will get gold in either vault or BB, and so far she’s the highest beam scorer so

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

It’s part of the way through but I’m going with you and saying Paseka, Hong, Biles. Paseka is in front of Hong and I don’t think Biles can beat her.

  5. tennisgrl456 Says:

Steingruber down and clutching her knee on vault 😦

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

And she left in a wheel chair. If this is an ACL tear I will cry. That could mean no Olympics for her 😦 She needs to qualify through the test event.

  6. tennisgrl456 Says:

Bee Farm will beat Hong Un Jong!! Now just to see what Simone has in store. Paseka’s Amanar had more steps on the landing but had MUCH more distance/amplitude than Hong’s so the judges definitely got it right.

    • gymbot Says:

I would have given it to Hong for the better form throughout, textbook technique on the block and cleaner landings.

  7. tennisgrl456 Says:

That’s it: PASEKA (you go Bee Farm…the only truly consistent Russian of these championships), Hong, Biles.

Biles played it safe and smart. She can do the Cheng, but why throw it now and risk injury? Save it for Rio…if she can nearly beat the other two with a .8 SV deficit, she is setting herself up perfectly for when she wants to peak: the Olympics).

    • G Says:

Yep, Simone still got her medal and can upgrade next year. Aimee is smart in pacing her for sure. I’m happy for Maria.

      • H Says:

I am also happy for Maria. Hopefully Steingruber is not serious injured …

      • G Says:

I know. I was so sad for Giulia! But she didn’t seem to be in TOO much pain. That said, she could have just been hiding it. I hope it’s just minor too 😦
        And I loved her leotard.

  8. Guest Says:

Paseka obviously robbed Hong’s VT gold medal.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

I watched the vaults again…did they not take ANYTHING for her fugly execution? Hong was downright clean compared to her.

    • H Says:

Hmm Hong looked cleaner, but Paseka had more distance and amplitude as well landing i center?

      • G Says:

Yeah that’s what I was thinking Hong (and a lot of the other girls) landed way off to the side. Either way, it was close score wise.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yep, she absolutely did. I wish the judges could take more off for preflight bc Paseka actually comes close to straddling her legs :/

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

I am happy for Paseka, but with the margin between her and Hong that slim, the sloppy form TECHNICALLY should have put her in second. The judges got the podium right, the third place spot right, but the 1st and 2nd place spots (and who belongs in each spot, IMO) is questionable at best.

  9. tennisgrl456 Says:

So with Fasana pulling out of Floor finals, SCS is in. I’m assuming Steingruber is out now as well, which means we will get to see Lieke Wevers in FX finals.

    • gymbot Says:

That’s great for Lieke. Did she hit her triple turn with leg in attitude yet? This could be her chance.

      I’m really upset about Steingruber

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I don’t know how reliable the info this is, but the gymternet as a whole seems to have received info (already) that preliminary tests show that her ligaments are intact. If that’s true, that is GREAT news for her. It still sucks, but it means she likely won’t need surgery.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

If Liekie pulls out a bronze somehow, I will cry. A beautiful floor worker.

  10. Gymbee Says:

Wow – just noticed Chuso isnt in vault finals!? What happened?

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

She did produnova (not that well) and a tsukahara 1.5. Wasn’t enough to make finals. I think she was a reserve or something

I’m thrilled for Paseka. Such a improvent-great to see. That’s her first worlds too.

      I hope Giulia isn’t majorly hurt 😦

      Yay for Simone. Smart Amy.

  11. tennisgrl456 Says:

I have no clue how the gymternet as a whole gets this info so fast but a preliminary diagnosis says that Steingruber’s ligaments are intact.

  12. Ilanchik20 Says:

Oh I want GD off the medal. They gave GD 15.33 in TF. If she gets that again, she may medal. #plzno

Kocian can get a bronze. Fine with me, haha.

I want Darya to get a medal. I prefer her bars to Vika’s.

Fan Lin is beautiful too. But for whatever reason, judges seem to hate her.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

I’d be thrilled for Kocian to get bronze. SCS has a crappy draw, but it would be fantastic to see her on the podium. Fan Yilin is great, but part of the problem with her routine is the inbar Geinger. It really breaks up the “flow” of things and hardly gets any amplitude.

A podium with SCS, Darya, and Kocian would be my “ideal podium.” Realistically, I see GD getting on the podium.

  13. KG Says:

Just please no GD medals for UB. My only request.

  14. tennisgrl456 Says:

14.9 for SCS. Scheder looked great until the dismount, but definitely no chance for her to medal.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Scheder had major visible errors and got an 8.0 E. Shang got an 8.2 E. This is such BS judging.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I’m starting to think that maybe the judges are being extra harsh on Chinese case the coach is right there. Yes, it’s supposedly not a deduction but it would make me feel that the gymnast is not as sturdy if the coach has to be there for every move.

        Vika did well. Should medal.

  15. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.366 for Fan Yilin!! About damn time.

  16. tennisgrl456 Says:

Best routine of the Championships from Komova so far. Should be higher than her qualifying score of 15.3.

  17. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.133 for Douglas. Best she can do is bronze at the moment.

  18. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.366 FOR KOCIAN!! Three way tie for First! Could they legit give out 3 golds if it came to that??

  19. tennisgrl456 Says:

Gold for you Maddie K, you go Maddie K. And none for Gabby Douglas.

  20. G Says:

OMG what??? 4 way tie, I’m pretty sure my they know that all of these girls should be ahead of Gabby but they still want her to get silver…

  21. tennisgrl456 Says:

    4. Way. Tie.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

Ok, this is ridiculous. All of these routines do not deserve the same score. I call this a conspiracy.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

That keeps GD in 5th. Fine with mе. But Maddie is a gold medalist now. Wow, just wow.

These judges are crazy. Did they decide? We don’t feel like ranking the top 4, give them all medals.

  22. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.366 for Ruby Harrold. Is this real life? Are the judges drunk?

  23. Guest Says:

Wow, what a joke is the scoring of UB.

    • G Says:

Such a joke. Gabby beats Shang in what world? Omg, can’t take it.

      • Guest Says:

At least the result really pissed GD off.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

We all have to live with disappointment 🙂 Kocian and her shitty form as world champion makes me ill . I am so over this sport. These judges can’t tell the difference between Komova’s and Daria ‘s form and Maddie? Well at least Fan finally was scored fairly

      • gymbot Says:

Fan and Komova tying, I can see. Spiridonova and Kocian should have been sorted lower or even shared bronze.

      • Melanie Says:

Why was SCS scored so low? Her form looks about as clean as Fan’s to me.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She’s been getting cheated for years. The judges do not like her

      • Melanie Says:

It’s like they still think she’s underage…hello, she’s been around for YEARS. She hit a great routine and there’s no way Gabby should have had an E score .5 above her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I agree that is why they are doing it but look at her. She hasn’t grown or aged in 3 years. That is not physically possible for a 12 year old to 15. It’s more plausible for her to look the same between 15 and 18 than the latter. Her head is huge and it’s clear she was malnurished her entire life. The judges cheated at last year’s works and we’re disciplined and yet they didn’t name names. This has to change

      • Gym Obsessed Says:

GT, your comment “we all have to live with disappointment” is cracking me up. I can’t stop laughing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You know where it’s from right ?

      • mim Says:

Shang might have a teeny tiny body but her face is mature. It was even a few years ago with the bitchy tweet hoopla. You can see from her face structure that she’s well into her teens.

Meanwhile, there’s a ton of American gymnasts who legit look like children. I did a double take when I saw a photo tweeted by Emily Schild on her 17th birthday. She looked like she was turning 9! Ragan looks pre-teen, as does that new elite Abigail (last name escapes me) from Texas Dreams who is apparently 14 but looks 8. I know it’s not their fault at all. But Shang looks way older than them!

      • Guest Says:

That reminds me the fact that Bridget Sloan is the youngest team member in 08 and even younger than Shawn several months…

      • Gym Obsessed Says:

        I don’t know where it’s from… what’s it from??

      • Guest Says:

I thought it is from someone who should be a great person as Martin Luther King. 😏

  24. tennisgrl456 Says:

4 Golds, Gabby in 5th. Are they going to remix the anthems or…

  25. Tortuga Says:

So will they play four national anthems in the medal ceremony? Can’t say I’ve ever seen this happen.

  26. tennisgrl456 Says:

Is it bad that it brings me a great amount of joy to know that Maddie K is a 3 time world champ and Gabby is only a 2 time world champ, despite how sketch the UB judging might have been?

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

I’m laughing a little (a lot) right now. Hahaha

Marta, this gives you a reason to leave GD at home next year. She couldn’t manage to get on a podium in a bars final where half the gymnasts got gold. LOL

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Hahaha….I can just picture the convo. “Gabby, how did you not get a medal, HALF OF THE FINALISTS GOT GOLD YOU ARE DEAD TO ME!”

    • gymbot Says:

Douglas has a gold medal from 2011 (team), so they both are 3x gold medalists.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Gabby has gold from 2011 and 2015. Maddie has gold from 2014, 2015, and UB Gold from 2015.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

But Gabby has two golds and a silver. No event medals (fig doesn’t consider AA an event). Kocian has an event gold. I still can’t stop laughing. Lmao

      • Guest Says:

GD is 2 gold 1 silver. LOL

      • gymbot Says:

totally right, silver is different from gold. I must be confused because they are just handing them out today

      • Guest Says:

In this Olympic Cycle up till now

Biles 8 gold (and still counting)
        Kocian 3 gold
Skinner 2 gold (should alternate be counted?)

and many and many others 1 gold…

  27. Sainabou Nyang Says:

I am lmao right now. A 4 way fucking tie on UB. That shit made my day. I cant wait for the russians interview afterwards.

  28. Ilanchik20 Says:

I’m glad they didn’t break the tie. If they would have broken the tie (based on execution), the Chinese would have been 4th. Vika/Maddie 1st/2nd (depending on the 2nd d panel since they had the same E), and Spiridinova in 3rd. I’ll take a 4 way tie.

  29. Exgymgurl Says:

who cares. Kyla has a bars medal and gd doesnt. LMFAO!!!!They all work hard, and yes ties suck, but just think if brenna had hit in quals……l

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

Maddie’s gold now makes her the most recent UB champion from the US (instead of Nastia). Fine with me lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kocian and Komova having the same E score is why this sport just lost full credibility with me. This will be a blog some time soon.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

All this has done is given Nastia another opportunity to make this about her. Got an email Nastia has tweeted 3 times about it already.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

She may have tweeted about it but it also puts Nastia in a position to acknowledge she is not the only good bar worker from the U.S lol. At least Maddie doesn’t have a crazy Cowboyed dismount (but her feet, ugh).

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You need to learn to think like me ( scary thought right.lol ) I m always right on these things. All this does is make it easier for the NBC trio to name Nastia and Woga on every broadcast from here until eternity until we get another UB world champ. Sigh . I have so much to say on this UB final but I want to wait til I blog. Won’t be til after tomorrow’s finals

  30. Melanie Says:

That was one of the most entertaining finals in a long time. Four gold medalists, everyone hit, and GD didn’t get a medal. Sounds like a great day to me!

  31. Gymnast41 Says:

Gabby: “I’m second in the world on bars” LOL literally this is the worst thing that could happen to her so I’m happy lol

    • Guest Says:

Did she really say such the thing? So she sounds like she is begging a silver medal to her.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

She did. She said that she is 2nd in the world on bars and a bunch of people are complaining on Twitter how unfair it is that someone with a 2nd highest bar score doesn’t get a medal. Oh, people.

Of course, someone on Twitter also brought up how unfair it is that someone who would have been 4th gets a gold medal but someone who placed third at Olympics didn’t get a medal. They referred to Aly in this but it would apply to Cata too.

        Just one big mess.

      • Guest Says:

It is still the 5th highest score. I am sick of the fanatics.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

ONE competition and the every 4 years have already frustrated you. Just wait for what is to come. Do yourself a favor. Do not follow Gabby. Don’t pay attention and save your sanity.

      • Guest Says:

I hope the 4-year fans will change their minds and their idol after Simone rocks in Rio.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        They will

  32. Rocío Martínez López Says:

Just saw what happened…Were the UB judges on Martha’s crack?

  33. Ilanchik20 Says:

I wonder if FIG (Nellie) want to introduce some major code change on bars for the next squad. A 4-way tie would give them a perfect platform to do so. I wonder what it may be.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Changing the code won’t fix judges being too stupid to see the difference in execution of Komova vs Kocian. The judges were afraid to judge so who knows if maybe the FIG doesn’t want a scandal so everyone gets a medal.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

ANYONE that isn’t 100% on top of the bar should lose handstand credit. None of this in a % of a degree if you are off for any reason it’s a 3 tenths and then 5 tenths and so on and how no one on the judging panel can see all the form breaks Kocian has when even I can catch them in her routine is astounding . The judges are at fault here

      • Melanie Says:

Kocian was even messier today than she was in quals or TF. The beginning of her routine, I remember thinking to myself, “Well, she’s given away a medal.” Little did I know…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

usa-gym has a video that shows all her form issues.

  34. H Says:

Crazy that Maddie and Komova gets the same E-score. Crazy.

  35. JK Says:

I just finished watching EF today. WTF happened during bars final? I thought Shang Chunsong was lowballed on execution. Kocian getting a higher e-score than Daria? Kocian and Komova getting the same e-scores? It’s official: the judges are on crack.

And I also found it a bit suspicious why the judges took so long to give out Komova’s score. Don’t know whether that was a good thing or bad thing.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

He laid out Jaeger was piked so she didn’t get credit for the laid out of this joke would have never happened

      • JK Says:

It wasn’t? Her laid-out Jaeger looked the same as always. She should’ve just gotten credit IMO and ended this whole farce. This 4-way tie makes me think it was FIG’s attempt to drum up some publicity for Worlds.

I also wonder what Kocian’s chances are of making the Rio team now that she’s “technically” a World champion on Bars – even though she shouldn’t be.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She was going for a 6.7 and only got 6.6.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Maybe Penny or some else wants Marta to take Kocian to Rio (so there is WOGA person on a team to make it convenient if Valery ends up replacing Marta) so someone made sure Maddie got a medal so Marta couldn’t leave her at home LOL

Ok I know I’m stretching but there needs to be some logic here haha.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kocian is literally a one event gymnast. Her 5.5 beam and floor do not fit a 5 member team. Marta is going to have to leave her at home next year even if she hits. Oh what Marta does is always whack.lol

      • JK Says:

Even though Kocian is a 1-event gymnast, that hasn’t stopped Marta in the past from taking similar type of gymnasts to the Olympics. And now that Kocian has a World bars title, Marta probably think she has a legit shot to win an Olympic bars title.

I remember watching an interview Marta gave 2-3 years ago about how she called Kocian her “pet project” or something like that. At the time, I didn’t think much of it but now… I’m seriously thinking that Marta always wanted Kocian on the Rio team all along.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

If Marta thinks she is Maroney on vault she is sadly mistaken. Jao and Aliya were’t here. These judges are going to lose their jobs after this debace.

I forgot about the project comment.

        God help us all.

      • Melanie Says:

I thought it was Baumann who was her pet project…Marta always loves a good beamer.

World champions have been left before (Chellsie Memmel/Hollie Vise/Ashley Postell). Kocian shouldn’t come near the Rio team, especially if Locklear is back in full force. If they have to take a one-event bars specialist, Locklear has better form and can drum up more difficulty.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Looks like I might have to start rooting for Ashton Kutcher:)

      • Guest Says:

If one EF specialist can be chosen, I still prefer Maroney if she can take back her world no.1 vault skills, but this poor girl lost her direction.

I don’t think Kocian deserves to be on the podium for her performance tonight IMO (should be on the 4th place). Anyway, the judges scoring is a joke made me crazy and it is an opportunity to reform the scoring standard and transparency.

      • Gym Obsessed Says:

No way is Kocian going to Rio – this worlds proved they need a beam worker more than anything. I see a door opening for Kyla if she can pull it together.

      • laura Says:

I agree, opens the door for Kyla if she can get back in the race….wasn’t it in 2003 when neither reigning UB world champion made the olympic team in 2004 (hollie vise and chellsie memmel?)

      • Exgymgurl Says:

maroney has an actual heart issue and cant train let alone hardly do gymnastics. theres an article about it on some dumb nbc page but its a known issue now so i can say something

  36. Gymbee Says:

Komova ledt a comment on Aly’s IG.

“Ali, Gabby, Simon and all thJust was looking through Aly’s instagram and Vika has left a comment.e people I have no written, I beg your forgiveness for my behavior and my uncomplimentary remarks in your direction, it has been said on emotions, it is a silly thing to do! I love your exercises, you are doing it well! I just loved it! again I ask your petition for my behavior! I checked in here just to apologize to you, I’m ashamed of you! I would like to once again congratulate you on your excellent performance. Google hope everything correctly translated.”

Aly responded: ❤ all the girls appreciate your apology and we wish you the best in finals tomorrow.

Sorry if this was posted already!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I think it was mentioned but thanks for the rest

    • Gymbee Says:

Sorry, that got messed up somehow!:

Ali, Gabby, Simon and all the people I have not written, I beg your forgiveness for my behavior and my uncomplimentary remarks in your direction, it has been said on emotions, it is a silly thing to do! aly also responded on social media saying all the girls appreciated her apology and aimee boorman said vika came up to all the girls and coaches at practice and apologized.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

So the fans can now move on?

      • mim Says:

Ok Vika doing this actually warms my heart a little. Good on her for having the balls to apologise in person, not many people would do that.

  37. mim Says:

I just watched the bar finals. What the hell were the judges smoking?? I’m no expert but I thought Spiridinova’s and Komova’s routines were on par and better than Kocian’s and Fan’s? Why don’t they do the E score differentiation at worlds?

At least the girls all took it as good sports and were similarly WTF about it, laughing at the ridiculousness.

Meanwhile, I had to laugh at the photo of the 4 gold medallists and Gabby, before someone ushered Gabby out of the way..

    • mim Says:

I think I need to watch it a few more times. On a second viewing now Komova and Fan look better haha.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

People don’t like the Chinese especially whiny Americans so no one ever thinks they deserve anything. Shang had 5 tenths less of an execution score than Gabby. These judges were on crack.

      • Guest Says:

Shang lose to the performing order. 😦

  38. Guest Says:

That’s why people are losing interest to the judge based scoring sports. Good job FIG.

  39. Case Says:

Just more proof this sport is rigged. No one will ever, ever, ever be able to convince me that four gymnasts could pull an identical score, and for gold. That is so highly statistically improbable

    • mim Says:

My husband was watching this with me and said the same thing, “this is almost statistically impossible!” I wonder why they wouldn’t try to differentiate them. It’s like, hello, it’s your job.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I am with you. I feel like this was calculated hoping that someone would fall. The way Gabby is .33 back. It’s all weird.

Komova finally learned to fight. Ugly leo though.

  45. Rachplum Says:

What an underwhelming beam final. NED was beautiful to watch, I love all their turns and unique combinations. Other than that and Simone, I was not very impressed. I would rather watch US nationals! Really hoping for some improvements by Rio.

    • SS Says:

The judges taking so long to put up the scores didn’t help anything. Even Simone’s took quite a while and her routine was far superior. The NEDs were beautiful to watch tho. They make me feel like I’m watching the Soviet Union circa 1992.

  46. tennisgrl456 Says:

I just woke up in time to catch PB and now floor for the women. I would LOVE a podium of Sae, Simone, and Maggie. Sae has the unfortunate draw of going first, but she can stick the shit out of her outrageous tumbling. Seeing SCS get an individual medal would be fantastic as well, but judges love to lowball her.

  47. tennisgrl456 Says:

14.933 for Sae. She has beautiful tumbling but her dancing/expression leaves a lot to be desired.

  48. tennisgrl456 Says:

No question, that was a gold medal performance for Simone. 15.8. Lol…no one else will even come close.

  49. Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

did wevers only have 2 passes?

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yep, so does another girl from the Netherlands….I think Thorsdottir?

    • Melanie Says:

Looks like it…I kept rewatching to see if I missed something, but it looks like just a double tuck and a 5/2…

    • gymbot Says:

Fasana, who originally made the floor final only has three passes. Floor is changing as athletes and coaching staff find ways to optimize their scores and play to their strengths – it’s nice to see.

  50. tennisgrl456 Says:

(Unofficially) as of these world’s: # of World Gold Medals

    -Latynina: 9

  51. Melanie Says:

Aw, Schafer is crying! I think happy tears…although she did look pretty pissed after her score came up. I thought it was a little low, but I’m happy that Sanne took silver. I’ve loved her for years, and she’s been in the game so long, I’m thrilled for her.

  52. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.0 For Maggie!!!!!! Into second place!!!!!

  53. Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

Kesinia tattoo is so distracting. Didn’t they used to have to be covered?

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

It used to have to be but they changed the rules. It would be kind of absurd if they made the women cover tattoos but not the men.

But I agree, not bc I find tattoos distracting in competition, but bc I find huge ass ugly flower tattoos that take up the entire nape of ANYONES neck to gross haha.

    • gymbot Says:

Is it different for the Olympics when more people watch?

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Nope, as far as I know it is the same for the Olympics. I know that Alicia used to cover up her tattoos for domestic comps but I feel like that was more of a “Marta rule/preference.”

  54. tennisgrl456 Says:

15.1 for Afan puts her in second and Maggie in 3rd!

  55. Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

    downie should beat maggie.

    • H Says:

      Yes, and Shang as well

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Downie’s D wasn’t high enough. Shang WOULD have beaten Maggie if she had completed her quad turn. The judges were right to reject her enquiry, as much as I would have loved to see her medal.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I like Maggie but she is def getting some over-scoring. Judges like her (which I’m sure Marta will capitalize on in the future). I think Sae should have been in 3rd or Shang.

I loved Ellie’s routine too! Great tumbling.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I mentioned Sae in another comment, but had she landed her first two tumbling passes as she did in qualifying, she would have had at least the bronze. Her tumbling/form on her tumbling is unreal, but she doesn’t have that “selling it” factor to her routine that people like Afan and Maggie have.

      • Gym Obsessed Says:

Agree that Maggie is getting some overscoring.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        All the US girls are.

      • gymbot Says:

Sae also has a problem with her leaps, she is competing B and C elements whereas everyone else in this final is competing all D dance elements, or Ds and Cs.

    • Guest Says:

      and Shang as well

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Ehh, I don’t agree with Ellie beating Maggie. Shang should have/would have if she completed the quad turn (and the judges rejected her enquiry rightfully so in this case).

Maggie is overscored a bit, but sometimes it’s hard to tell with her landings. She lands with staggered feet rather than taking small hops back and really works to sell her routine, but the judges aren’t taking enough “in the air” form deductions on her. I think if she did twisting skills (i.e., triple full rather than a piked full in) she would get hammered more for form in the air, but she has found a way to maximize her E score at Worlds and if it isn’t broke, why would she fix it?

If I was in her position and I knew my qualify score was a 15 with some jacked up form in the air on a few of my double saltos but relatively clean landings, I would continue to train/work on the landings during practices in Glasgow (as opposed to cleaning up in the air at this point). She knew how the judges were scoring her and she used it to her advantage…huge props to her for performing like she did under pressure.

      • gymbot Says:

Good analysis Tennisgirl. Form is not heavily deducted in this COP, so this strategy really optimizes her score.

  56. KL21 Says:

As happy as I am for Maggie to win bronze, I really thought Shang deserved to break top 3 :/

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Any other day I would agree but she had a D score deduction that cost her the bronze. She didn’t fully rotate her quad turn, which was what the enquiry was about. Had she finished the turn I believe her score would have been 15.033.

    • Gym Obsessed Says:

I agree – I thought Shang’s E score was too low (or really that Maggie’s was too high – 8.8??). But I’m happy for her.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I want to go back and watch her routine. I know she didn’t complete the quad but I’m interested to see if she “stumbled” out of it at the end or not.

Shang doesn’t do double saltos, right? The only thing I can see the judges deducting for E score wise is possibly lack of amplitude.

      • Guest Says:

Maggie’s E score is too high. Her form has couple of problems.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I agree. Especially if you compare Maggie’s E to a few others. I like Maggie but I also like consistent judging lol.

That will boad well for her in prep for Rio. I’m sure Marta will take the over-scoring by international judges into consideration lol

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I was just checking E scores. I think Afan AND Maggie’s were too high. If Ellie’s E of 8.733 was used as a bench marker, both of them should have scored lower than that. Afan had an 8.7 and Nichols had an 8.8. Neither should have hit the 8.7 mark.

      • H Says:

I agree tennisgirl, specially about Maggie. And even with a downgraded turn dif i think Shang should be before Maggie.

      • gymbot Says:

I disagree. Maggie has form issues but amazing leaps and mostly stuck passes. Afan has steps on landings, even out of leaps, but better form fan Maggie. Downie had great passes (form especially!) but really lacks in the leaps.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Maggie got 8.8E and Simobe got a 9.0E. How is that even possible?

I do like Maggie. I actually think Marta is trying to turn her into Kyla (minus beam but better floor) and it seems to be working.

I will freaking scream/die/petition if GD makes it to Rio and Aly doesn’t. Ugh.

      • H Says:

@gymboat what do you think about the E-score to Shang, and that Maddie and Komova had the same E.sore in bars final?

      • gymbot Says:

Hi H, I think the bars judging was a cluster ****. Komova had the best form for sure until her swing into dismount. No judge, no matter how dumb they are, would miss that. However, she also has built-in deductions. She probably loses tenths on her handstands out of her kips, of which she has the most in this group. Additionaly, the jaeger probably also costs her – it probably receives hip angle deduction – remember, the D panel and E panel are separate, so the D panel can downgrade the element but E panel judges what they see – so it’s either too open for a pike and too piked for a layout. I would still have ranked her first, among the other four gold medal gymnasts because everything else she does is better (clear pike position is better, amplitude of release is better, fluency of swing, stuck landing and height on landing, form on performed elements).

Kocian has tiny form errors throughout but lacks major form errors on every element. The feet are noticeable, leg breaks on her “Chow 1/2” transition. Her handstands looked great and she minimized the kips in her routine. Her clear pike doesn’t look as good, I’m not sure if this is deducted. Anyway, my opinion is she should not have tied with Komova, but maybe Spiridonova (see below).

Spiridonova actually should have been knocked the most, she covered up her mistakes with extra swings to half turns but looked very short on handstands on two handstands (at least 6 tenths total). Everything else she did was beautiful.

Poor Fan Yilin is too close on her gienger and lacks amplitude. Catching close to the bar is almost a double deduction because she must catch on bent arms which is also deducted, it also caused her to muscle her kip and she came up a bit short on the handstand. I actually really liked everything else about her routine and her dismount was so improved!

So my podium would have been 1) Komova, 2) Fan, 3) Kocian or Spiridonova – doesn’t matter if they tie. They were about the same to me.

      • gymbot Says:

I think Shang should have won bronze over Maggie, I think she should have won the enquiry on either spin, she completed them both. A question remains if you step backwards out of spin, which she did, but your heal came 100% around, do you receive credit. It definitely shows lack of control on the spin, but for the difficulty credit, I’m not sure. I bet one judge on the D panel awarded it and the other did not, thus her score took so long in the first place because it had to be reviewed.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I think the question re: Shang’s D score was whether the Gomez was fully rotated, not whether it lacked control (if she fully rotated it but it lacked control, that would be more of an E score issue). Her Gomez was 100%, without question, NOT fully rotated and. rightfully so, not credited.

That being said, there was a lot of crazy ass E scoring going on in the floor final (not as much as in the bar final, but I don’t think any final can match that). It seems that when you rely on spins/turns to build your D score, you take a MUCH bigger risk than when you build up your D using mostly tumbling/leaps/jumps. The rewards can be greater, but the deductions if you fail to complete the turns can also be greater. Her D score was .2 down from where it was in qualifying so I don’t know what exactly the judges deducted for other than the incomplete Gomez (I’m just a casual gym fan so I don’t know how much value she would lose for not completing specific elements). As far as her E score goes, I would venture to guess the judges took .3 for her chest being low on her final tumbling pass. Even with those deductions, she was still less than one tenth behind Maggie, who probably should have been in 4th.

Unfortunately, this is not a sport where those who deserve the medals always get them.

  57. KG Says:

Well, this worlds to me has said three things as far as he USA team goes: gabby is probably already in for Rio, Brenna will never ever go anywhere with team USA again, and Maggie has opened doors for herself in the Rio discussion. And Simone is queen, but that’s not new.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Hahaha…good summary. Simone is officially one of the best of all time now and they need to keep her bubble wrapped. Aly will do Aly things and get herself back to 2012 form. GD is ugh, but still on Marta’s team. Maggie upped her value and the door to Rio is wide open. Bye Brenna. Maddie needs to up her difficulty on beam (the most important), floor, and vault and not break her ankles 12 times. Skinner is kind of irrelevant with all of the good floor workers this year and the ones coming up, and she doesn’t have the star power of Maroney to bring for one event.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

I agree. Simone in Rio. GD too, unfortunately. Maggie has increased her chances. Aly will compete with Ragan for the beam/floor spot. We’ll need another Beamer/bars. So I say Kyla or Norah. Perhaps Laurie will sneak in. If Bailie improves beam, keeps her bars and has an amanar will compete with Maggie for the spot.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Ahhh, my dream would be (altered to include GD bc I have to) Simone, GD, Maggie, Norah, Ragan. In an ideal world, GD would be replaced by Aly bc they won’t need GDs bar score than badly if they can put up Maggie/Norah/Simone on bars.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gabby will be offered more endorsements starting very soon so lets see if she keeps training or takes the money she can get next year. Will Marta allow her to half ass her training again?

  58. tennisgrl456 Says:

For Simone after 3 FUCKING WORLDS: 14 medals, 10 of them gold. She has the most world golds out of any female gymnast in HISTORY, and is tied for third with Latynina for # of world medals overall.

  59. Guest Says:

Kohei finally won his first high bar title.

  60. katecoursey Says:

Uggghhhh I’m sorry, I really do like Maggie, but Shang should’ve had that bronze. She’s been underscored this whole competition, and after getting fourth in AA and the debacle that was the bar finals, I really hoped she’d pull out a floor medal.

Also, does anybody know if Maggie’s staggered landings (she always seems to land with one foot in front of the other on her floor passes) is a deduction?

    • gymbot Says:

Legs apart on landing is 0.1 in this CoP. But landing as she does, she avoids steps and hops, which vary in severity.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

It is, but no more than a tiny slide back with your feet. It’s basically the lowest possible built in deduction :/

    • Guest Says:

both Sae and Shang deserve the medals than Afa / Maggie.

      • gymbot Says:

I agree. Hopefully Sae gets better leaps so they can’t cheat her in Rio. Shang, I don’t know if she’ll ever get a medal – but she must be well recognized. She adds so much to this to the Chinese team, despite lacking on vault. The team medals China has received last year and this year are largely thanks to her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I have not watched yet I’l see if I am back to agree with this.

  61. tennisgrl456 Says:

I think Ilianchik20 mentioned this in an earlier comment, but w/regards to Maggie, Marta will be thrilled with how she handled the pressure/was judged by international judges.

I don’t think that woman will lose any sleep over who “deserved” the bronze/silver/etc. Could you imagine Marta saying, “That was very good Maggie, but from what I could see, Sae, and Chunsong should have scored higher than you.” The only thing she gives a crap about it how her gymnasts are received/scored, fair or not. Maggie has basically put herself into the slot of third (or second at the moment without Aly competing) best gymnast for the US on floor and potential to be top 2 in the AA in the international judge’s eyes.

  62. gymbot Says:

So how did we do on the medal podiums, GTT?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I put Daria in the UB picture hoping she would win and she did so I tried the same with the beam and floor medals I wanted. 1 out of 3 tho I’m not entirely sure that is Sae in the picture.lol

I tried to help you Seda but ypu failed me

  63. Ilanchik20 Says:

Maggie is basically the Aly of the last squad. When Aly went to her first Worlds, no one expected her to be judged so well–same with Maggie. So I can see this team minus Maddie next year. Norah or Kyla could take Maddie’s spot. We need a good Beamer so that would help.

I’m not really sure where Bailie fits, I guess in competition with Maggie but given how Maggie did at Worlds, it will be hard. I would take Bailie over GD but we all know that won’t happen.

    • Gym Obsessed Says:

But there are only 5 on the Olympic team. 😦

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I can see this team without Maddie too who will now be lowballed on beam even more since the worlds judges hammered her.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yeah, I don’t see Maddie making it to Rio. Alternate? Definitely a possibility. But they need people who can bring up their beam score, too.

      • KG Says:

I think Maddie will be Rio’s Finnegan, sort of. A specialist whose specialty isn’t particularly needed for the Olympic team, or who doesn’t always hit/is injured. There are a few AAers whose bar sets are good enough or satisfactory and though Maddie is the “world champion” (or one out of four lol), I doubt the little form thigs will slide coming into trials/real Olympic crunch time. I think she’ll be an alternate if not injured. No star power like Maroney and 15.366 isn’t the same in a team final as maroney’s 16+ amanar.

  64. H Says:

Aly should, if everythings goes as “normal” be able to outscore Maggie on beam, floor and even vault. So If GD is in as well Simone that leaves two specialist for floor beam, and bars beam?

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

If Norah come back next year with her killer beam that she can hit consistently, that’ll put her way ahead of some other new seniors. There is no way Marta wants to count a 13.9 on beam in TF again.

I still think Aly will be on the team but she def has some work ahead. She does better when she is not in the limelight and is chasing so I think she’ll be fine.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Marta judges give credit to those 13.9 routines and only her herself to blame. We mentioned at this blog Aly’s were suspect but Marta took her. She did the same for Mccool and Wieber and now Aly. Tho besides Courtney I think the other two might have been done on purpose

      • ilanchik20 Says:

Maggie was the one who got 13.9, Aly got 14.3. Both had almost a point more in the U.S. I think Mihai is smarter and less stubborn than Geddert was so I full expect a new routine from Aly next year. It’ll have more skills and fewer connections because unless judges love you, you don’t get connections haha. Based on what Marta was saying about Aly in all the interviews, I think Aly still has a good shot. Plus her popularity is what Steve wants.

That said, I think Marta will low-ball others’ beam so Ragan stands out. She is Marta’s pet so I’m pretty sure she wants her in Rio.

And Given its Chow, I expect Norah to be in top shape.

But trials should be interesting. The top AA’er guarantees a spot on the team in again. i wouldn’t somehow be surprised if Marta tells the judges to have some other AA’er other than Simone that she likes/wants win so she can take that other person to Rio without having to explain her choice of them otherwise. Simone will go no matter what so she doesn’t need that guarantee spot.

Maybe Simone can purposely loose to Maggie or someone else as a strategy lol

    • H Says:

Does Aly have a realistic or surprising possibility to be competitive for the second AA spot. I just want her to be able to make it before GD, but is it really possible? Can Miha be smart and make it happen (with help from Ashtons bar coach)?

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I think her bars been improving so had she hit her tkatchev release, she Would have been ahead of GD (even with a mistake on floor and vault). I think Mihai will fix her beam and really, that’s been the major problem.

In some interview, GD said “it’s going down next year,” I’m assuming reverting to her battle with Simone, LOL. But hopefully she’ll just be going down haha.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I would say that she absolutely does, and she is someone who you can never count out. I don’t think she will get an outside bars coach, but Mihai is a very smart coach and won’t be a stubborn idiot like Geddert when it comes to keeping routines that get hammered. I think she’ll rework her beam routine and change some of the jumps out of her tumbling passes (and keep working on her Amanar) and definitely show up next year in better form than this year.

      • JK Says:

Maybe Aly could do a Weiler 1/2 turn and connect it to the Maloney – the same as Simone and Jordyn. Her SV would go up an extra 2 tenths. I wish Mihai would get an outsides bars coach to help fix Aly’s form but I don’t think that’s likely either.

As for beam, maybe she should do that wolf double turn (or 2.5 like Simone) that everybody is doing. I hate that skill and wish it would go into extinction, but it would help increase her beam SV.

I was never a fan of Aly’s gymnastics (and I’m still really not) but I am rooting for her to get that 2nd AA spot. I really hope she can stay healthy and fix all her issues by next year.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Aly was in the AA in 2011 Gabby was out and at the Olympics it was opposite. So it will switch 4 years later and Aly will medal in the AA and Gabby can stay home.:)

    • Guest Says:

I think Aly has to focus on floor and beam which are more potential to medal. Her AA is not so consistent. I think some new star / Maggie would be able to take over GD’s AA spot.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I’d jump from joy if GD is left at home in favor of Maggie or Bailie next year. Pleaseeee Marta.

I think my perfect team would be: Simone, Aly, Norah, Bailie and Maggie.

Oh Kyla, I miss you too!

But I think Gabby, Maddie and Regan are Marta’s pets so my dream team will never happen.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

That would be ideal…that group or if Ragan really steps it up, she could be put in for Bailie. Could you imagine them sending a team with Simone, Norah, and Ragan on beam?

I like Maddie and I know Marta loves having her Wog-ette on the team, but with the talent that is coming up, I could see her more as an alternate, especially now that the US has more depth on bars and is really lacking on beam.

      • Mim Says:

The interesting thing about Maggie is we really don’t know her true potential. Many people (not necessary people here but elsewhere online) almost take for granted that Aly (and Gabby I guess too) arent at their best and will get to be like 2012 Aly/Gabby again. However, even though Aly is a beast, she’s older and we don’t know if she’ll get here for sure even though it’s a huge possibility. Gabby, you can’t get rid of that girl and her body type bodes well for staying strong as she’s gotten older. With Maggie, she may not have peaked yet and she may only get stronger for Rio. She had a fantastic first outing and this is the best she’s ever been, but she might be Aly-esque and blow Aly and Gabby out of the water who knows. Or maybe she’s peaked now. She will be really interesting to watch over the next year.

Floor is so tricky because let’s face it, judges factor in the performance element (so subjective) into the “artistry” consideration and how a gymnast sells a routine/the pizazz of a gymnast has nothing to do with how well the elements are performed. I think Maggie sells the hell out of her routine and you can’t take your eyes off her even if it’s not 100% polished whereas Shang might have better execution but to be honest I barely remember her floor (even though I adore her!). Its like how Bailie’s floor is so clean usually but I’m snoring half way through. It’s just the unfortunate byproduct of this style of sport.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Next 9 months is def going to be a battle. I think Aly still has a lot she is saving for next year. And GD unfortunately will likely be I G a few upgrades, amanar included.

I think Aly’s body should be fine. She has been relatively injury-free in her career so I’m hoping we’ll see more upgrades next year. I think Mihai will fix her beam. I also doubt she’ll drop bars. She wants that 2nd AA spot and she’s stubborn so it won’t happen (unless Marta tells her to or something, a la Alicia style in 2006). I doubt Marta will do that.

The thing about Maggie: she improved so much, so fast this year so I’m scared she peaked super fast. Also, Maggie has had knee problems and the way she lands that amanar–it’s scary.

Doesn’t Marta likes to have all the girls to have their Potential Olympic routines set by Dec?

Kyla, oh Kyla. I’m slowly loosing hope.

I still think Norah and Ragan are the only two potential new seniors who may be in Rio. I still think Norah will be the biggest surprise next year. Last time she competed, he said Norah has upgrades on all events so I fully expect them next year (likely with a Shawn style amanar). Laurie, maybe as an alternate. Jazzy always seem to surprise me so who knows.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Jazzy is overscored the surprise of her is bad judging. KYLA IS NOT GONE. Did you see beam this worlds? Kyla is greatly appreciated and consistent and would have had an execution score close to 9 even with a 6 or 6.1 she is very much in play. Norah and Regan are cute but they have proven nothing especially at the world and Olympic LEVEL. Kyla is alive and kicking 🙂

      • Guest Says:

I really hope Norah can fully recover and be selected to Rio team. The main reason is I want to see Chow show again he is still a top coach (and piss GD off).

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Kyla, Kyla, KYLA 🙂 Who was at UCLA again this weekend.

  65. Exgymg Says:

So Simone has more world golds than anyone on the womens side. There better be a Simone Biles cup after this if she goes to Rio and wins team floor beam and AA gold and something in vault and bests Nastia on every level. She can leave Rio with four gold medals. Nastia and her dumb one gold three silver and JYY floor bronze. No I wont forget that.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      JYY’s medal. TRUTH

    • Gymnast41 Says:

It would deserve to be an elite competition like SCAM or even better, replace the Nasty lookin cup lol

    • Guest Says:

But I don’t think Simone is a person who is desperate of those so-called “honor”. Simone will forever be a GOAT in women gymnastics and not need any vanity to emphasize.

    • Guest Says:

Also some US gymnastics big names like Shannon Miller, MLR never did the same stuff like this.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

Yes, but Nastia gets paid a whole bunch of $$ every year to her “charity” that sponsors NLK by Usa Gymnastics. Simone has to win AA gold / team and dominate the olympics and she will make bank at that point. She let some pressure get to her in the AA about it being three in a row etc, I hope she doesnt do the same in Rio. Im actually feeling sorry for Gabby at this point. I think she was deluded enough to think at worlds shed come in and game it and beat Simone. She forgets Jordyn had a broken leg in London and couldnt do numbers. Gabby seems deluded enough to think that she just needs a few upgrades to beat Simone. She was only in bar final because brenna has no head game. She cant even win a bar medal. Kyla and Mustafina and Iordache have all come closer to beating Simone. She will keep her name out there if she makes the Rio team but thats it, she wont be one of the stars. Rio should be Simones olympics. Others are too motivated to train harder and take her spot. I hope.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Gabby super delusional to think she can even come close to Simone. She didn’t even make top 4 at nationals and the only reason she made the AA at this Worlds was because Marta didn’t take Key, didn’t allow Maggie to compete for it, and Aly flopped.

To be honest Gabby doesn’t deserve to go for AA at Rio with the US field as it is right now, unless she really comes and proves herself at Trials, but I have a feeling she’ll be allowed to “skate” yet again, and it’ll be at the other girl’s detriments. She’ll always be overscored.

The whole thing sucks because at the end of the day GD’s return is going to screw over Key and Nichols, who have performed better than she has and only got silver this year to Simone because of a really weak world field. No matter who from the US got to compete AA, it was likely they would get silver as long as they didn’t make a major mistake.

And Simone is in a class by herself but I can’t imagine the pressure she’ll have coming in to Rio, with the last three World championships won by her. It’s going to be tough, even though she’s Simone. That’s a LOT of pressure.

  66. the dude Says:

THRILLED for Manrique. He got a bronze in HB and will be going to Rio. He totally deserves it. Sucks that Larisa has to wait, but I don’t have a doubt she’ll miss out in Test Event. I actually think Manrique ‘s position would’ve been a little more precarious

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yes!!! SO happy for him. I mean, he finished second in the AA so no doubt he would have earned himself a spot at the test event but it’s nice that he can just go straight to Rio without having to worry about that. Plus this means that Cuba can send another male gymnast to the test event (Do they even have any other male gymnasts who are legit contenders for the Olympics?) and possibly have 2 male gymnasts in Rio.

Today was also a good day for the Olegs (haha…Stepko and Verniaev—totally butchered that spelling), both of whom did not have teams qualify who qualified automatically to Rio after the PB finals.

  67. tennisgrl456 Says:

Tying in event finals performance to the chance to make it Rio next year. What do you think about Seda? I would say that she has basically sealed her fate as an alternate (at best). With Skrypnik, Melnikova, and Sokova coming up (plus Aliya coming back), I don’t see a spot for her, especially on a five person team. Same with Kharenkova.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I think Seda has more chances that Kharenkova, because Seda has the potential to get better scores, while Kharenkova is basically a one event gymnast that rarely hits. Seda had good scores in Baku and has room for improvement, so if she gets more consistent, she has possibilities, specially on a team so prone to injuries and problems as Russia. It depends of the injuries and how the new gymnast fare in the new year.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

After this year I can see (as long as they stay/get healthy), Afan, Komova, Bee Farm, and Aliya as almost locks. That leaves one spot. Spiridoz, in my opinion, should not have scored as high as Komova in UB finals, only has a FTY, and hardly ever stays on beam.

With Melnikova as the “technical” winner of the Russian Cup, I could see her as being a front runner for the first year senior spot (I can’t see them taking more than one). If Juice stays consistent/gets more consistent, she is OUTSTANDING on beam/floor, which they desperately need. Dasha S is kind of in a Jazzy/Laurie-esque position where she scores better in the AA than Melka/Juice when healthy, but she is not really a stand out on any of the events and would need one of the top girls to break in order to have a strong shot.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Sorry, when I said “Dasha S” in that last comment I realized that there are TWO Daria S’s from Russia vying for a spot on the Rio team. The one I was comparing to Jazzy/Laura is Dasha Skrypnik 😉

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I think Dasha is out too. They can’t send to Rio a one-event gymnast for an event they are already strong on.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Agreed. She really should not have scored as high as Komova this year in UB finals and with her FTY, she didn’t even make it into the AA finals. With a healthy (ish) Aliya, plus Komova and Paseka (who also can medal on vault), she is basically useless.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

No way Dasha Spiridonova is going to Rio (save injuries from other girls) and I don’t think Kharenkova is going either.I wonder about Alla Sosnitkaya, but I haven’t see her since her injuries and I am not really aware of how she is at the moment. I think Paseka would have more chances to go if she improves on floor, even if she doesn’t compete it, as she has proven that she is reliable and Russia desperately needs another member of the team capable of presenting a good floor rutine, specially in a time of need. But I think Aliya, Afan and Komova are more secure in their positions that Paseka. In fact, she was almost left home this time and, even when she had done herself a lot of favors this Worlds, I don’t believe her position in assured. Russia likes AA gymnasts. But in any case her position in better than Kharenkova’s, Seda’s, Alla’s and Dasha’s, that’s for sure.

  68. tennisgrl456 Says:

For anyone who is interested, these are the individuals who guaranteed themselves a spot in Rio:

    WAG:
    -Hong Un Jong (PRK)
-Pauline Schaefer (GER) Unless team qualifies at test event

    MAG
    – Rayderley Zapata (ESP) Unless team qualifies at test event
    – Harutyun Merdinyan (ARM)
    – Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE)
    – Ri Se Gwang (PRK)
    – Marian Dragulescu (ROU) Unless team qualifies at test event
    – Oleg Stepko (AZE)
    – Oleg Verniaiev (UKR) Unless team qualifies at test event
    – Manrique Larduet (CUB)

These spots are non-nominative, meaning that they are awarded to the gymnast and not the country that the gymnast represents. If the medallists are part of a team that qualifies at the test, then they “lose” their automatic bid and have to make the team that their country sends to Rio.

  69. JK Says:

Beam has always been my favorite event to watch but FIG is slowly killing it for me. They really need to change the code for the next quad. I don’t know what exactly what, but something needs to change.

I love Simone and thought she was the deserving winner at beam finals, but I thought she was a little overscored. I have high hopes for Wang Yan for next year. I really liked her beam routine from last year’s YOG and hope she can perform like that next year at Rio. And please Komova – please, please, pretty please – bring back your BHS-LOSO-LOSO combo. That was so beautiful. And stop trying to connect that L-turn into aerial walkover. Do something else please. And thank you for fighting to stay on beam and not giving up.

Poor Sae. I really wanted her to get a floor medal. I don’t know if she was underscored (or if Maggie was overscored), so I’m not going to comment on that. Also, I’m a little biased because I really like her floor music (it’s from How to Train Your Dragon). After watching her floor today, I’m having the urge to re-watch that movie again for, like, the 20th time. 🙂

Nothing else to say about EF day 2 except (again) the judges suck at their jobs. Thank you for ruining this sport.

Oh, and because I don’t want you to feel left out, Marta you suck too. 🙂

    • Mim Says:

I love beam from the Dutch girls. It’s more beautiful to watch for me than heavy tumbling with arms flapping about for the dance elements so I was super pleased to see Sanne and Pauline medal, but they just got lucky there were so many falls. Shame their difficulty isn’t higher. Just my personal preference. Simone and Komova seem to balance the fluidity of movement and solid tumbling so so well (I find Larisa too quick through the movements actually but she’s close) and China’s always beautiful on beam but it’s such a small number of girls who seem to master both. I really hate side somis, can we ban those?

      • JK Says:

I too find the Dutch girls’ movement quality more pleasing to watch than the robot arms from most of the US girls. But I just wish they would up their difficulty (by adding a couple more D acro skills) – on both beam and floor. Their routines look so easy to me and I feel like they could do more. And I wish Komova would increase her difficulty on beam too. I hope she and her coach realizes they need to change her routine.

I’m kind of 50/50 on side somis. I actually like the way Komova does hers but I absolutely cannot stand the way the Chinese do them. It always looks to me like they’re about to take a dump. I say ban side somis for the Chinese only. lol

  70. JK Says:

I just read your blog about today’s EF. I totally agree with you about Lieke’s floor. I feel the same way about her and Sanne’s beam too. Pretty, but I find the low level of difficulty very… underwhelming. I almost get kind of bored watching their routines. But it was really nice to see how happy they were just to be there, whether they medaled or not. I think their coach/dad also taught them well on how to be a good sportswoman. I was always seeing them giving hugs/congratulating the other girls after their performances. It was nice to see that. Komova was like that too, I think.

Vault was the only EF I watched out of the men’s. I skipped through HB just to see Kohei though. Since I didn’t watch through the whole thing, I wasn’t able to see the other guys’ behavior towards him. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they were super jealous of him. They can’t touch him. But on vault, I totally questioned how Ri Se Gwang got credit for that piked Dragulescu. I so wish Yang Hak Seon was there. His form is beautiful. I hope he gets healthy and wins a repeat gold on vault next year. And I thought it was really cute how Dragulescu was going around with his selfie stick after the vault competition. He seemed so happy to be there. I think it would have been such a great story if he won the gold with his age and everything.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

Have seen the link you published, gtt. I think he seems a little whiny like he is saying “everything is falling apart since I have been gone, they better come on their knees to ask me to come back before Russia makes a fool of itself in the Olympics” but I think he made several points. The point when he says that Valentina can’t claim an injustice when they had four falls in the team final and a horrible floor is one that we have discussed here. And I think he knows Mustafina and have valid concerns regarding her psycological and physical health. We all have seen that she was tired after years of carrying the team on her back and her burnout in the last year’s worlds was evident, so I think he makes several good points, even if he is trying to make himself more important than he is right now.

I saw some discussion that someone commentating Worlds in NBC seemed very bitter and b*tchy to Chinese gymnast because they were awarded UB gold with tying scores but did not get the same treatment in 08 Beijing.

    • Gymbee Says:

Not their fault… IOC will not award multiple medals so they have to break ties. FIG allows it. Haha who at NBC was it?

      • Guest Says:

Maybe she still think she deserves tied a gold medal but neglected her huge cowboyed dismount and YYL’s underscored performance.

This attitude reminds me “It was a Deltchev”

LOL i am so damn thankful that I don’t watch NBC. I enjoyed everything about the British commentating. I don’t care how many times she mis-pronounced anyones name she wasn’t Nastia and yes, Nastia is still bitter.lol

      • JK Says:

Wow, I didn’t even know NBC was airing Worlds. lol. I’m lucky I missed their bullshit commentating. Damn Nastia… it’s been 7 years. LET IT GO.

And if there’s anyone from Beijing who should be bitter, it’s Jiang Yuyuan, whose bronze you stole.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She also stole Beth Tweddles UB medal
All her form breaks should have added up to much bigger deductions and her missed handstands. Hell she fell in prelims and never should have made the finals in the first place. ( shhhhh I am in denial about He and Beth prelims mistakes )

      • Guest Says:

And Yang yilin who obviously executed better bars routine than her didn’t complain anything also. The judges has gifted her an AA gold medal already and she got more than what she deserved. The bitter acts just proved that she is full of greed and jealousy.

  74. H Says:

I see here that many of you are rooting for Regan for team Rio.
Why? I seems that I cannot see what you are seeing. Please enlighten me?

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

      There are a few things:
-She is a KZB athlete who has been on Marta’s radar for a LONG time. If I’m recalling correctly, she has been invited to camps since she was a level 9 or 10. Definitely a Marta pet, but as a result, also someone we’ve had a chance to watch grow/evolve over the last several years.
-She has come out with pretty killer beam/fx routines and has an OK DTY, given the fact that she’s about 4’6.” If Norah’s the queen of the beam, she’s the princess. Both of them perform beautifully on the apparatus, and after this year’s worlds, it’s obvious the US needs a beamer.
-She is better pick (in my opinion) when we are talking about the 2000 babies than Jazzy/Laurie bc she really stands out on her pet events.
-Last but not least….if she and GD are the biggest Marta pets going into 2016, it’s an easy pick 😉

But seriously, she can go up on any event (and I suspect her UB will improve this year as she grows a bit), but she is a true BB/FX standout (not in the a the Finnegan-come out of nowhere to be best on those two events but not all that stellar- kind of way) who has been getting better and better over the last few years. I wouldn’t want her on the team if she showed up next year and wasn’t ready, but she’s one of the those kids that I kind of feel is going to come on SUPER strong and possibly (likely?) outshine Bailie.

      • JK Says:

I don’t really think Gabby is Marta’s pet. More like Steve Penny’s pet imo, which I find more dangerous.

I need to go watch some of Ragan’s routines. I too don’t get all the hype around her – but that has to do with the fact that I just don’t know anything about her. But the US is seriously lacking in beam, so if you guys say she’s a great beamer, then I guess she has a pretty great shot of making the Rio team.

    • H Says:

      Thanks!!
I am not convinced by her form/artistry yet, but like you said she still have time to improve/mature that aspect of her gymnastics.
Hopefully not, but Bailie seemed to have peaked consider this year. But maybe next year is her year with real progression(?) Since she should by now be well adjusted to her growth etc. and fired up by not being on this year team.

Btw I will be surprised if Marta picks more than one “newcomer” at the international stage (worlds, not counting Jesolo etc) for Rio.

  75. Ilanchik20 Says:

Kyla at Halloween. At least it’s much better than what Maroney was doing.

    • Gymnast41 Says:

Awww looks like she’s ready for UCLA. I’m happy that it looks like she’ll definitely have a great time there, but I just hope it doesn’t affect her fight for rio 😦

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The College gymnasts and Kyla seem to be in the same shape.I don’t think that bodes well for a legit chance in 8 months. I hope I am wrong. Come on Kyla prove me wrong.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Hrm. Part of me thinks Kyla did take some time off to rest her injuries (by backing out of camp and such)…she was never really “in shape looking” though to be honest. Yes, skinny and taught but not like muscles busting out. I watched nationals again last night (night 2, where Kyla fell on bars dismount) and thought to myself how funny that Aly and Biles had muscles bulging out of their legs but Kyla’s legs are rather tone-less. I was also thinking her coaches should push her to lift weights because that might help with her endurance issues (she really should have landed that bars dismount, and she really shouldn’t get so fatigued on floor).

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I want to say one more thing about Kyla here. Someone brought up before that her coaches weren’t dealing with her growth spurt correctly and I am close to agreeing. Apparently her coach Howie told Daggett that Kyla is “too tall to be a gymnast.” Hello, Howie – KHORKINA. They need to figure out how they can use her body type to her advantage, find some new moves and combos that allows her to show off her elegance while making it difficult enough to stay on top. This Worlds showed how much a Kyla is needed (solid bar/beam worker) and with her clean DTY, there could be a place for her on the Rio team. The problem with the other bar/beam workers (besides Norah possibly) is that they are good on one or both, max. And they are not consistent.
And if Aly, Biles, and GD are already on Team Rio, which it appears they are, then we really need better bar/beam workers who can also make vault happen if need be. Zing, Kyla.

Kocian – only good on bars, and even so not good enough when the Chinese/Russians come back next year
Locklear – only good on bars
        Dowell – blackballed
Baumann – only good on beam

Key – I think she was left behind because of GD, and will stay left behind because of GD unless GD can’t do an amanar and Key can compete an amanar and upgraded bars/beam

Norah – I know she’s a beamer, and if she can put in a good bar set then Kyla might be replaced by this one

Ragan – I don’t know this girl at all and need to see her routines. But if she’s in, and Norah’s out, I can see Kyla fit the bill here for her bars.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I agree with much of what you said. Kyla hasn’t upgraded over the years because her coaches are managing her growth (their strategies seems to be wait it out), rather than use it to her advantage. She wins the athletics testing very often so I cannot understand why her endurance is lower than that of others.

We def need a beamer (more so than a bar person but preferably both.

Norah is basically Shawn on beam, except with better flexibility.

We obviously don’t know how Norah looks like now since she hasn’t competed since Jesolo but even at Jesolo her bars were usable (a 5.8/6.0) with very good E. She is a Chow gymnast and based on the upgrades she was working on in the Gymnastike video so I expect to have at least a 6.4 this year.

Marta loves Regan. Her beam is very good but we cannot have another gymnast with unusable bars. On a side note, in the last interview during Worlds, she talked how her shoulder was twitching all day so I think Marta will want a team where Simone does not need to do bars in TF. If Aly is one team (and I still expect her to be), then the other 3 need to have usable bars–which would exclude Regan and include Bailie. But likely prob exclude both. If Aly is not on the team, Regan can take her place.

I guess, there is Maggie but her beam is a no-go and we’ll more amanars and Aly will have an even more constant floor/beam next year so I see Maggie as an alternate (a la Price).

If I would be taking a bars specialist, I would take Locklear. When healthy, she usually hits and has a potential to rival the D of the Russians and the Chinese.

That’s just my two cents but who the hell knows what Marta will do.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Ah, I forgot Nichols. I’m an idiot. I honestly feel like Nichols and GD are competing for the same spot (as we saw this Worlds) for Rio. Both are “solid” AA’ers but not really all that exceptional in one event. GD gets a lot of credit for her bars, but she has yet to medal in them in an EF (I believe). At this point, she’s more usable on bars than Nichols, and better on beam (given judges gifts) but less consistent.

Vault – Nichols has her here, but GD will bring an amanar to Rio (or a “fake” one verified at camp). On floor, Maggie has GD here but the US has strong floor workers already. So it’s like Gabby’s bars basically out-does Nichols’ floor. And Gabby’s gifts on beam outdoes Nichols.

However does anyone know if Nichols has upgrades on beam? I know she has a dismount and she took that one out (the same as Simone’s, right?)

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

If GD will be competing with Maggie, GD will win. Sadly. But judges sucks. And if GD is even remotely usable in Rio, Penny will make sure, she is on that team.

Maggie has Barani that she competed at Nationals and the dismount–both she didn’t do at Worlds. I’m sure they’ll be back, plus anything she may upgrade.

I’m certain that Maggie will also upgrade on floor. She has a double tuck as her last past. For a routine that scored a 15.0 at Worlds, the double tuck doesn’t belong lol.

GD prob has upgrades too–but let’s hope not. And no, she is yet to medal on bars. She come 5th this year and 5th in 2011. On the other side, Maddie is a gold medalist on bars, and Locklear was 4th last year and I much prefer Lcklear on bars.

Theyll be announcing the team at trials again (according to the official docs on USAG) so that’ll give us an idea on how everyone is at that point. The first spot guaranteed on a team. GD better not beat Simone at trials (thanks to judges) somehow.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I forgot about that. Marta took out her full in and Barani. The screwing of Maggie is making more and more sense by the minute.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I wonder why. Guesses? Lol. The Barani (at least) looked fine to me (in person) at Nationals.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Maggie beat Gabby on every event she competed against her head to head but you are right Gabby will get benefit.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Yeah. I still don’t understand how GD scored 15.3 bars during TF.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Start value went up 2 tenths and execution up almost 5.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

She connected something in TF so .2 in D is prob fine but God did it go up .5 in E–that I want to know lol.

I wish they would release judging sheets haha

      • Tortuga Says:

Also Maggie had been doing a full twisting double lay out dismount on bars in training, so there’s another upgrade. I’m sure she will upgrade her last pass on floor and clean up her tumbling and amanar form. She really needs to work on being confident on beam. Not sure how much the barani and double double up her beam D, will be nice to see her hit all of it. It’s definitely going to be a fight for those all around sports other than Simone. Oh boy! I’m ready for Classics now.

I think the article just targets the readers who rarely follow gymnastics and make them believe GD is the ONLY rivals of Simone. LOL

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Gabby is just another AA/non-specialist gymnast, where yes she might be good at bars but she doesn’t “excel” at them. If her best events right now are bars and vault (with a DTY), that doesn’t bode well but she will be on Rio because of the “story” and Steve Moron Penny.

That’s why I say GD will be fighting for the same spot as Maggie and Bailey – the AA’er spot who is not an event specialist. The others will really need to upgrade though because GD will no doubt get inflated scores to help her.

That article is so ridiculous. But it does foreshadow what the “story” is going to be next year – the Simone vs. Gabby rivalry. What a joke.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Hmmm…. No I think the story will be that Gabby and Aly are just there to help the team however they possibly can. I think both thought Simone was beatable. I think injuries will more determine this team by default, you have jesolo, pac rims, classics, championships, trials, and death camps. Someone probably more than one will get hurt. I wish Kyla would just go to UCLA.

I was watching nationals the other day and couldn’t help but notice the girls seemed more “lively” (even their routines) than they did at worlds. At worlds even Simone’s vault was less stellar, had less height. Those death camps and intense training leading up to Worlds must take a lot out of them. I don’t understand the reasoning for that, seems every coach is against it but again, they just follow Marta’s Rules along like lost little puppets.

And when Aly and maybe GD were originally coming back, I think it was around the time (or just after) when Simone was having her “panic attack” at that one meet (was it Classics?) where she fell like twice or something and I think Ohashi beat her – or something like that. I can’t remember correctly, but there was a time when Simone “seemed” beatable because yes she had the talent but her head wasn’t there yet. Whatever they did to Simone after that meet they need to do to Kyla, but I think Kyla sees the writing on the wall and is likely going to call it done. I don’t blame her, I hope it’s not the case (because I’m still a fan) but I just have this feeling. Seems like the year before the Olympics, always one of my favorites opts out.

Like Shawn did in 2011. I know she had knee issues but her pulling the plug had everything to do with realizing she wasn’t going to be put on that team no matter what she brought to the table.

Maggie’s homecoming is hilarious. She does sound like Kyla

HAHA oh good lord I swear USAG does interview training (obviously Gabby skips) where they tell the girls to use this formula: Everyone is my best friend, I just want to hit all four routines and have fun, It is so amazing to represent the USA, I am working on upgrades…I feel like there are some points I am missing feel free to add LOL

Word on the street is that simone signed with Nike and will be announcing sometime this week. I actually wear a lot of Nike so I’m really happy about it 🙂

    • Exgymgurl Says:

      She did sign with Nike.

      • Diana (@dianajc99) Says:

So no more GD with nike?

      • Guest Says:

I didn’t see any GD’s Nike promotion since 2014. Maybe the contract is over.

At least Shawn is still participating in Nike’s activities and Nike has co-operation relationship with her TBD website.

      • Guest Says:

        It is official now. 🙂

      • Guest Says:

I just wonder will Nike sell leotards in someday. Even Shawn or GD signed with Nike, but they only did some promotions about workout gears, stretching guide or training apps not directly related to gymnastics.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I believe Adidas had the national contract and now it’s Under Armour? Funny how in certain areas certain brands dominate. In swimming, you can get Nike swimsuits but I always hated them and preferred Speedo.

In terms of workout gear, Nike is super expensive for what you get. Same material but you’re paying for the dang swoosh.
