Killing two birds with one stone

Killing two birds with one stone

So Aly Raisman is being honored at The Tradition a yearly thing they do for Boston athletes that accomplish something in the sports world. I was thinking about going.

They are honoring a lot of Boston athletes I like this year besides Aly including Vince Wilfork, Doug Flutie, Derek Sanderson, Carlton Fisk and Jack Nicklaus and if I go (see picture above) I could cheer Aly and the above mentioned and then I could BOOOO and throw basketballs at the biggest bunch of %%%%%%% assholes to EVER grace the Boston sports scene all at the same time. It would be perfect.

There is something in this for you people too. You would get to see me arrested and see me being carted away from the ” Sports museum ” in hand cuffs. What do you think?

(Sarah, if she ever comes back to the internet world would call me out on this post as stuff she doesn’t understand but Sarah isn’t here:)

I now understand why the ugly leotards won the contest at USA-Gymnastics This design makes the contest leotards look like they were done by professionals. Oh well, at least it isn’t pink.

lol. Do it. (throw the basketballs).

• gymtruthteller Says:

🙂

• gymtruthteller Says:

They are honoring them now because the team is going to suck for the next twenty years and they won’t have a reason to honor them ever again which makes me happy. I really wanna go so I can boo them.lol

2. Allie Says:

Omg you are right. That leotard is hideous.

3. Lithi Says:

There’s gonna be a documentary on CNN International on whether the drive for equality is still there after London. Featuring…take a guess.

Yep, Gabby! DING DING DING DING!

I’m just going to post a link to the article. I’m afraid GTT will ban me if I post the whole shebang. :p http://edition.cnn.com/2013/08/07/sport/gabby-douglas-olympics-racism/index.html

• Gymnerd Says:

Oh, goody!!! Now GABRIELLE isn’t just a victim of racism….but sexism, too!!!!!

————————————————————————————-
“What it did do, however, was add further backing to Douglas’ assertion that female gymnasts are at a far higher risk of criticism than their male counterparts every time they wander into the arena.

“Us women have to do a lot more than the men,” said Douglas reflecting on the criticism. We’ve got our hair and makeup to do. The men can just go out there but we have to get ready.””
————————————————————————————-

Oh….the HORROR!!!!!!

• biyatch Says:

Male gymnasts verses female gymnasts… yeah the girls totally get more shit ::eye roll:: There’s a HUGE stigma attached to male gymnasts that the girls dont have to deal with.

• Karlie Says:

Eh, I think there is plenty of sexism in gymnastics, but Gabby either doesn’t articulate it well or is missing the point. I don’t think the “sexism” is solely from the way that women “have to wear makeup,” but there is a weirdly sexual element to women’s gymnastics that is not present in men’s gymnastics. Considering that many of the competitors are teenage girls, the way that women’s gymnastics is marketed, ESPECIALLY by NBC, is kind of creepy to me.

I don’t necessarily agree that females are at “a far higher risk of criticism” and it made me cringe to see Gabby saying that because women “have to do a lot more” the sport is sexist. The role of sexism in gymnastics comes with the media, which oversexualizes young athletes, and the constant pressure to have a certain body type and “look” to succeed in the sport. I’ve defended leos as a type of “uniform” to non-gymnastics fans before (I can’t really think of an alternative type of outfit that would allow the flexibility needed to do a lot of the moves), but it’s true that men probably don’t have to deal with the same type of body criticism that female gymnasts face frequently. This isn’t endemic to women’s gymnastics; divers, volleyball players, tennis players, etc. all have to deal with it. It’s just a very unfortunate fact of life, and of the media.

On the other hand, I think that male gymnasts face a whole host of stereotypes that female gymnasts don’t have to deal with, so you can’t really say that one group has it worse. They both have completely different issues associated with them, and the media coverage they receive is dramatically different.

Side note – does anyone remember when Tim Daggett commented about a female gymnast “having let herself go” since the last Olympics? It was a while ago – maybe in 2004 – but I swear remember hearing something like that.

• gymtruthteller Says:

Why does she talk? When she does she sounds like an idiot. This is why I don’t read Gabby stuff. If anything the men have more to do, 6 EVENTS ANYONE and I won’t even get into what other stupid stuff she says because I don’t read Gabby articles to keep my pressure down.:)

• biyatch Says:

I saw that yesterday too. Gabby gave TONS of interviews that when she was young she looked up to Carly Patterson. Then Oprah got involved and all of a sudden she looked up to Dawes…? I think Aly was the only one who ever really mentioned anyone in the Mag 7. Also the story about her dad has changed so much (go rewatch 2011 Classics Tim Dagget talks about how she’s going to skype him after the meet.) It just seems that after she won, they are trying to alter the story to fit a narrative.

• Akshay Says:

Unless I’m hallucinating, I believe Kyla Ross said her role model was Shannon Miller. Who did Aly mention in the Mag 7?

Also Gabby looks up to Carly? Just an observation – but like Gabby tries too hard to be America’s sweetheart or whatever, I always felt Carly couldn’t be the role either. She came off as kind of a brat. Not to mention some of Carly’s interviews were downright cringeworthy. But hey, hopefully Gabby follows the path of Carly and disappears. 🙂

• gymtruthteller Says:

Gabby first said she looked up to Carly but when people started mentioning Dawes she started emphasizing her.

• Tortuga Says:

Aly watched a tape of the Mag 7 gala at the Olympics like a million times. So she didn’t really know them for competition just showcase stuff. But still she knew of them. I thought I remember GTT saying that Kyla looked up to Shannon but I haven’t seen it in interviews. I’m not going to read that article because I don’t want to be annoyed. I thought it was stupid for people to care about her hair so much during the Olympics and I think it’s stupid she’s harping on it now. If we should complain about anyone’s hair it’s McKayla’s. Just a clean ponytail or actual bun will suffice.

• gymtruthteller Says:

The original article criticized ALL the girls hair. The media only ran away with the Gabby part because she was black and they apparently want to start a race riot

• Akshay Says:

Kyla’s website has Shannon listed as her favorite gymnast as well. Double checked that just now.

• biyatch Says:

There have been several interviews (and in her documentary) of Aly saying that she watched the 1996 competition over and over again and used to know everyone’s individual scores off the top of her head. Never heard anything about a gala.

• Tortuga Says:

You’re right I made the gala bit up to see if anyone would say anything. You caught me lol. JK I swear I heard her say that somewhere but I was mistaken. I can’t find it anywhere now.

• gymtruthteller Says:

Please don’t.lol Article is fine. I guess you people have to discuss her while I avoid her so the comments section is where you get your rants out. Why would anyone even ask this uneducated twit a question about anything relevant?

• Gymnerd Says:

Speaking of “uneducated”….
———————————-
“It’s very fun,” said Douglas about her new found lifestyle in front of the camera. “I love doing photo shoots and commercials, it’s really fun. They like to keep it exciting with a lot of energy. I have a blast doing all this stuff.
“But with the whole fame thing, I just try to take it one step at a time. It can be difficult to handle everything at once with celebrity, the gym and school.
“So when I’m at school I think about school, when I’m at the gym I think about the gym and when I’m outside and traveling I think about that. I don’t like to cram myself with everything.”
——————————————–
Does she even GO to school? Earlier in the article, they mentioned homeschooling. How would GABRIELLE ever find the TIME to go to school…since she’s in SUCH demand to do all these appearances, red carpet events, etc.?? I bet she hasn’t seen the inside of a classroom since she was 10.

• gymtruthteller Says:

She doesn’t know if she is home schooled or goes to school.lol

• exgymgurl Says:

One HUGE difference between the mens and womens program is that the men never come off looking as stupid as the women do. If you read the ASK answers by Biles, Bross, and Poof they all come across as EXTREMELY sheltered, naive, unaware of the code, and catty against other girls. Katelyn Ohashi seems to have some sense of sarcasm about the code, but shocking that a WOGA gymnast would apparently understand the code better than the others NOT.

I know the men are older and most are in or through college and I think that makes a difference. I also think that in general Marta breeds a culture of sheltered naivete and does not like questions or criticism or for her gymnasts to do anything but be the little robots she tells them to be.

The men do not act like robots. The men do not act like wind up toys. Yes there are stigmas in athletics. Women cannot swim as fast as the fastest men thats why there are two races one for men and one for women that are exactly the same.

Then theres Gabby and I think the comparison to Carly is a good one. Gabby and Carly both dont sound very intelligent on their interviews after their wins. Gabby has completely done a 180 on her dad ( evidence is there from 2011 classics and the skype comments) Excalibur, her hair, etc. I will say that in the US Im pretty sure female gymnasts make more than the guys as pros with endorsements

• gymtruthteller Says:

The US men are annoying as heck and there screaming for each other is played for the camera as much as it is supporting each other. I find them all phony especially Horton and I think Chris needs medication for his out of control behavior.

• Karlie Says:

I agree. The only ones who come across as genuinely articulate and knwoledgeable in interviews are Ohashi and Price; most of the others are either very awkward or come across as extremely naive. It’s weird.

Except for McKayla, her interviews are hilarious. And I have a soft spot for awkward Kyla because she seems pretty grounded. 🙂

• Akshay Says:

I totally agree on Elizabeth Price – she was very eloquent in her interviews. I think she still has a chance for Worlds this year.

• mim Says:

it’s sad when you find one or two gymnasts who actually sound
intelligent and/or well/spoken, we all get excited. it should be the norm!

i agree elizabeth comes across as very well-spoken and katelyn seems to have a sarcastic self-awareness which i love. mckayla might not be the brightest spark (who knows) but girl can hold a conversation without uming and ahing all over the place which even a lot of adults can’t do.

i AM surprised that a lot of them have no idea about the code as the international gymnasts they compete against.. i wonder if they’re purposely left in the dark or they’re just so exhausted for
training they’re not going to waste their downtime on learning that sort of thing.

• Gymnerd Says:

@Exgymgurl: Re: The men coming off as Rhodes Scholars compared to the women: Two words – Blaine Wilson – the Ryan Lochte of gymnastics.

• Case Says:

The US women’s gymnastics team is discriminated against because they have to train at Marta’s rathole ranch. That’s enough evidence right there.

Free the women! Send them to Colorado Springs!

• biyatch Says:

I was thinking about it the other day and was thinking how superior the facility at IGC looked to anything at the ranch. I have no idea what they use the facility for not in the summer but I’m surprised USAG/USOC never tried to capitalize on that location. Perhaps its harder to get to then the Karolyi Ranch but it looks like once of the nicest, most expansive facilities in the country if not the world.

• exgymgurl Says:

Its not a great training facility at Karolyis. If Florida can rennovate their existing space you would think USAG could put the time / money / effort into rennovating the Karolyi ranch. Except the Karolyis own the ranch and USAG / USOC is paying them to use it. Yes the Karolyis make money every time they host anyone from USAG. The Karolyis dont pay for anything there. I wonder what happens to USAG if Marta Karolyi dies? Or if Bella dies? Or they both die. Then who owns the ranch? Or if they both retire? Its a tough question and one that I hope has been worked out legally because if its Liukin coming in with the Hopes / Dreams program and then him taking over as NTC ( Martas Job) I dont necessarily see that as a positive. I think Zmeskal has more the diplomacy and the understanding of the code and would do better should Marta ever retire. Plus her husband worked for the Karolyis, so I think its either one or the other. Interesting to see who starts building a house on the ranch in the next few years. The ranch keeps everyone contained because its so freaking isolated and boring. The Karolyis have enough land you could build a brand new Elite training center and not even interrupt current camps or training. Thats probably what needs to be done, becasue its like they are all still operating like the days when Chelle Stack’s parents were paying extra for extra lessons and Bella was doing everything on a shoestring budget and making the parents pay for everything. Now USAG pays for everything and Bella pockets the $$ rather than building a better facility. Theyre getting whatever equipment is going to be used for the olympics for the elites probably as soon as it is announced to train on and not paying for it. Hilton re-did the dormitories and laundry facilities and part of the food service as part of the USAG sponsorship. So seriously what are the Karolyis paying for at their own property? Nothing. USAG is paying them rent and salary. Wonder what they are doing with all of that $$$.

• gymtruthteller Says:

Florida makes no sense due to the location. Texas is in the middle of the Country and fair to all.

• biyatch Says:

USAG/USOC actually entered into an equity partnership with the Kaorlyis regarding the Ranch. That basically ensures that athletes will be trained there for awhile, even if Marta and Bela bite the dust.

4. sportsfan Says:

I think there is a different level of criticism for woman’s gymnastics, but I don’t believe its sexist. I believe its historical. As we all know, the Soviet Union/Russia had dominated the sport for decades. Each Summer Games was a contest between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R, and women’s gymnastics was at the forefront of it. That competition drove the sport to become one of the pillars of the Games, and it still holds that place today. Outside of basketball, I would venture to guess that the most watched sports during the Summer Games are gymnastics and, more recently, swimming. Track and Field can be thrown in as well.

My point is that it is because of that old Cold War competition that makes everyone pay close attention to gymnastics, even if they don’t care about the sport outside of the Olympics. 4 year fans, like myself, care about the sport as a matter of national pride, not as a matter of actual knowledge. That’s why I’m here, to gain that knowledge.

• Karlie Says:

Fair, but there is definitely an oversexualization of young female athletes that is both generated by and portrayed in the media. I don’t think gymnastics fans are sexist, and I don’t think the sport itself is either, I just think that it’s part of a general larger media trend where female athletes are judged more by the way they look than by their athletic prowess. Artistic gymnastics lends itself well to that kind of criticism because it’s a sport where body type, costume (attractiveness of the leo) and hair/makeup feature prominently, but it’s not a problem specific to gymnastics in any way, more of an issue with the media’s double standard (look at what happened when Marion Bartoli won Wimbledon…there was an internet sh*tstorm about her looks).

Bck when I was a four-year fan, I didn’t care about the remnants of the Cold War rivalry and neither did my family. I think the majority of people watching gymnastics at the Olympics just like it because it’s a sport where people do incredible, mind-boggling things, and because it gets zero coverage outside of the Olympics their only exposure to the awesomeness of gymnastics is when NBC featuresit prominently during the Olympics.

• sportsfan Says:

Yeah, I think “oversexualization” is a better word than “sexist”. The media, primarily the sports media which is male driven, uses whatever angle they can to bring in as many viewers as possible. The easiest way to do that is to promote the physical appearance of the girls, rather than the athletic prowess. Granted, the athleticism is what gets people to sit there and watch, but to keep them coming, they create a talking point to bring them back the next day. That whole thing with Gabby’s hair could have been ignored. Instead, they turned it into something, and they had themselves a mini-controversy.

I would be lying, as a guy, if I said I didn’t think Mckayla or Aly were attractive. I do, and rightly or wrongly, that does get me to the TV set. I was impressed by their athleticism, but when I first sat down to watch the gymnastics portion of the Games and I saw Team USA one of my first thoughts were, “Hey, she’s cute”. Bottom line is that portraying these girls in a certain way has worked, and the media isn’t going to stop doing it. The night Aly won the gold and bronze medals, the fast rating for NBC was 26.2 million. So, somethings working.

• gymtruthteller Says:

The original discussion concerning hair was about everyone on the team. The media turned into just Gabby so they could call everyone racists

• sanitynmotion Says:

lol you are the best at putting it 100% correct in as few words as possible.

5. Tortuga Says:

Really delayed question but I’ve been on tumblr a lot lately and see stuff about Shayla borderline bullying Shawn, does any one have details on that and Shayla hate in general? I know about the fundraiser thing and people freaking out because she got into the Olympic village with Bridget’s ID but don’t know about the Shawn thing.

• Katie Says:

ASac, shayla, nastia, and Sam were all bitchy towards Shawn.

• gymtruthteller Says:

There was rumor I just heard about when Shayla got thrown off tour for drinking that she tried to blame it on Shawn.

I think in general Shayla is another spoiled rich kid that rubs people the wrong way. I like her because she called one of the GGMB stalkers a bitch.lol

• Katie Says:

Ooooh, I knew that she got thrown off the tour but I never heard she tried to blame it on Shawn. Interesting.

• gymtruthteller Says:

That is the latest rumor.lol

• exgymgurl Says:

Im sure Shawn was pouring alcohol down Shaylas throat. Im sure Shawn had nothing better to do than that. Shaylas disappointing ( to say the least) collegiate gymnastics career speaks for itself. Suzanne Youclan put it best when she said in commentary that Shayla was recruited to get 9.9 and above not 9.8’s and 9.7’s. Then again maybe Shayla just doesnt understand scoring.

• Katie Says:

@exgymgurl- I know right? The girl that she couldn’t stand that had no friends on the team and was picked om constantly somehow pressured/forced shayla to chug vodka straight from the bottle. We all need to take a shot immediately and watch shayla’s amazing bar mount.

• Tortuga Says:

This one? Hee hee

• sanitynmotion Says:

Wow looking at that it’s hard to believe she was an Olympic contender, ever! And her dismount was piked. Yikes.

Too funny how someone said she was recruited for 9.9’s, not 9.7’s…

• Katie Says:

@tortuga- best bars mount ever.

• Karlie Says:

Yikes, I’ve never seen that. Was the springboard just too far away? lolz how does that even happen to a former elite?

Also, I know that I can be kind of judgmental…but Shayla just struck me as a condescending, sheltered girl with an inflated view of her own self-worth. If she did blame her drinking on Shawn, that just seems…dumb. Seriously, who would believe that?

• Akshay Says:

Was it that she blamed the drinking on Shawn? I always got the impression that it was more that she blamed her getting caught on Shawn — aka she felt like Shawn was a tattletale. That’s just always the impression I had of the situation, not that Shawn forced her to drink.

• exgymgurl Says:

That someone was the legendary coach at Georgia that won all of their NCAA titles. Shaylas collegiate career was really more symptomatic of “What the heck is Jay Clark doing as head coach?” because she had her best and last season under Danna Durante the new coach. I can’t help but think what her collegiate career could have been with Dannas guidance for four years. Christa Tanella had her best year ever under Danna and I ask the same question. Clark had problems from the beginning and is just not the best overall head coach. Her first three years at Georgia epitomize why he should not have been head coach there.

• gymtruthteller Says:

From what I read on I think GGMB Jay Clark babied Shayla and tried to help her at the expense of the rest of the team

• Case Says:

Shayla got her own ass thrown off that tour by engaging in activities unbecoming of a minor. She earned that badge of disgrace all by herself.

• Tortuga Says:

Hahaha, oh damn. Shayla actual looks a bit like Pennsatucky from Orange is the New Black. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hSdptJmm7nw/UfkYuOGtFGI/AAAAAAAAW7E/rJ8R2jWAxJE/s1600/oitnb_Doggett-Close.jpg

GTT! Guess where I went today? Fenway Park! Did a tour of it. I’m now up to scratch on Red Sox history. Going to see the game on tv tonight! Wish I could see live.
Had to find a wi-fi spot and tell you lol, walking back to the city now 🙂

• gymtruthteller Says:

If this was 2003 I would feel guilty for turning you into a Red Sox fan for any reason but its now 2013 so I can smile with all my teeth.

I never toured Fenway til like 4 years ago and had a blast seeing the dug out and media room. Hope you had fun.

I love how you came to share the news. That is great:)

• Gymbee Says:

I loved it! The green monster was nice, what a view from up there!
And the Red Sox Mickey statue, looked pretty authentic to me haha! I work for Disney so I posed with it :-p

And the red seat! Can’t believe he could get the ball that far, amazing!

I thought of you there haha! Do you have a season pass?

Afterwards we went to sweet cheeks q for an early dinner, so nice!

• gymtruthteller Says:

I have never seen the Mickey Statue. Not even once. I have no clue where it is. They recently moved it but I have never seen it.lol

I do not have season tickets. I am poor and until the last year or two there were none available to buy. I go to like ten games a year.

• Gymbee Says:

Oh and the tour guy trash talked the Yankees a lot, to everyone’s delight 🙂 he said to come back to Boston in sep/oct for the victory parade hehe!

• gymtruthteller Says:

We need to get our licks into the Yankees while we can.:)

• Akshay Says:

So jealous. I don’t really follow baseball like I used to, though I still watch the playoffs and such… I follow football pretty avidly. But it is unbearable dealing with the Orioles and Ravens. Can’t stand them at all haha. The Monday after the Ravens won the Super Bowl was terrible.

• gymtruthteller Says:

The Orioles are evil

• Akshay Says:

I can’t stand them, but the Ravens are most definitely worse since they actually achieve things. It’s unbearable lol.

• gymtruthteller Says:

Ravens are cocky assholes but like you said they actually won something. Orioles actually celebrated like they won the world series when they beat the Sox and they were going home and not making the playoffs plus they run their mouths like they have ever accomplished anything. They are worse than the Yankees

7. biyatch Says:

Aly is in Michigan for Jordyn’s sister’s wedding. At least we know two of them are actually friends!
https://twitter.com/kyra_wieber/status/365667857599700992

• Karlie Says:

that duck face tho…

• Catherine Says:

Well the other two are preparing for Nationals. Dunno about Gabby but then weddings are so freaking expensive, not many would hand out a bunch of invites to their sibling’s friends. Unless the parents are paying and money is no object etc.

• biyatch Says:

According to little Wieber, Aly was invited because she’s “Ryan’s date but they aren’t dating.”

• gymtruthteller Says:

Have the, WHERE’S Gabby posts started already.lol Why the hell would Gabby be invited to Jordyn’s SISTERS WEDDING. People need lives.lol

8. terrigymfan Says:

Jack Nicklaus? What does he have to with Boston?

• gymtruthteller Says:

I asked myself the same thing.lol Is he part of the Rousch team owned by the Sox owner?

• sportsfan Says:

I think he’s just being honored for his golfing achievements, more so for any connection he may have to Boston.

BTW, GTT did you know that Lebron James has a stake in the group that owns the Red Sox?

• gymtruthteller Says:

He has a stake in something to do with the owners. It isn’t to do with the actual baseball part. It was a huge discussion here.lol

Lebron is a sell out. Some Yankee fan. Reminds me of that idiot Billy Crystal owning the Diamondbacks and rooting for the Yankees in 2001. What twits

• sportsfan Says:

I actually did some research and found out what it is. Sorry if i’m rehashing. The Fenway Sports Group is the sole global marketer of his rights. So, in return, they let him and his agent own minority stakes in Liverpool F.C. over in England.

I’m a Cleveland fan, remember. You don’t have to tell me that LBJ is a sell out.

• gymtruthteller Says:

I am proud that you still call yourself a Cleveland fan. That makes you a real fan. I stopped being a Celtics fan when they started lying to the players and bad mouthing them on the radio when all the players did while they were here is work their butts off. I lost all respect for the owners and GM and then the players started acting the same way and that was it for me. People can hate on the Patriots all they want but until I see Bob Kraft lying through his teeth in an interview or Tom Brady running his mouth at other players I will still be a fan (though not of Tom. He lost me wearing the Yankee hat) In fact a lot of players back in the day lost me for the same reason.. They were jealous of the fans supporting the Sox and this was before they were winning while the Patriots were winning and they started wearing Yankee hats (several of them) that was it for me. Grow up. This is a baseball town deal with it.

It must have been september-October of 2004 when the red sox were in the playoffs and all the crowd had radio’s in the seats and something big happened and the fans all cheered while the Pats did something stupid on the field and the players were mad the fans were cheering for the Sox. Cristian Fauria was the biggest mouth about the situation and til this day I hate him. Have some respect. the Sox players always respected the Patriot players and always supported them so do the same damn thing and I still think they are jealous that the fans love the Sox more than the Pats. Hey its too bad.

• terrigymfan Says:

Sounds to me like Boston hijacked the fame of one of Ohio’s favorite sons! LOL

• gymtruthteller Says:

If you mean Lebron I agree but considering he is a Yankee fan it says a lot about him going into business with the Red Sox. Feel free to take him back. I hate Lebron as much as everyone else for the way he made his decision but he has a right to play where he wants and as long as he makes the Celtics lives a living hell I will be a proud member of that bandwagon.
