Top 10 (8) Favorite Romanian gymnasts to watch

I need your top favorites from Romania people. Sarah would have loved my list. Where ever or whom ever she really was.

8- Vanda Hadarean: The dreaded 4th best gymnast means poor Vanda never got any respect from the judges. This was better or as good as Milo or Gogean.

7-Marian Drăgulescu– I always loved Marian. His fire was one of my favorite things to watch. His insane vaulting always made him a favorite of mine. I hate tie breaks. I bet Marian does too. Don’t watch his second vault in this video. I remember screaming nooooo, just like the announcer. First vault tho was, wow.

6- Andreea Iridon- I remember the first time I saw her on bars. I don’t remember the competition, I just remember her hitting her handstands, having great lines and her feet together. It was exciting to see because she was Romanian. Sadly she was completely inconsistent but the potential was there and of course it was squandered by the powers that be. Her most successful event was beam.

5- Diana Bulimar- I hate the word potential but Diana was one of those gymnasts who was always on the cusp of just, almost… but could never finish it off. Mostly because of injury. Beam This floor routine was underscored compared to”others”

4 – Oana Ban– One of my favorite gymnasts to watch. Loved her on beam and floor. She was one of the gymnasts I was most excited to see when I went to Worlds in 2003. She was injured in the middle of the 2004 Olympics and two per countried out of the beam final. Gymnastics sucks

3 – Andreea Isărescu : One of the few decent bar workers for Romania in that Era.. I should have used her floor routine. She was a pretty dancer with nice lines. Enjoyable to watch. ( The routine for floor is the Europeans but I can’t find her results anywhere???)

2- Gabriela Potorac– 1988 Olympian.

1- Simona Amanar. And no, I’m not afraid to say that out loud anymore. 🙂 I even wrote a blog about it… I have a confession… Simona is the originator of your Amanar vault and she did it on that, wooden thing we called a vault back in the day. (Imagine if she had that spring infested vault today’s gymnasts can’t even manage to compete a decent Yurchenko full on.

Scratch that top 10 for Romania. I could only come up with 8 names. I did some research on youtube trying to remember someone I might have forgotten but the only routine I enjoyed was by Daniela Sofronie on floor . Romania was one of the easiest lists to do off memory. These gymnasts have been my faves for years. Bulimer is pretty much the only gymnast that competed in HD for me when it comes to enjoying a Romania.

I KNOW, People are going to ask where, Larisa Iordache is but to be honest, she was never one of those gymnasts I enjoyed watching. I like her fine and when she improved her bars and became a real AA threat , I was always rooting for her but she isn’t one of those gymnasts I would say I enjoyed watching enough to go back and watch for fun. In fact, my favorite Romanians have always been the ones with potential that never really lived up to it. I never liked the Romanian stars like Milo and Gogean (Like at all) and while I really enjoy Silivas in general she never became one of those must watch for me.

Next up my top 10(?) favorite ex soviet republics to watch. I am working on the most overrated US gymnasts of all time. that list could be 100 gymnasts long 🙂

I won’t ask about Larissa or one of my favourites, Ana Porgras (I know she is not your cup of tea), but what about Catalina Ponor or Sandra Izbasa? They were pretty great. Alexandra Eremia, Monica Rosu, Silvas, Szabo could be good candidates, too. And I might be alone in this, but I liked Golgota very much. I loved the fire in her eyes in that first Europeans…you know, until Forminte killed her hopes and dreams.

No, no, no, no, no. None are my favorites to watch 🙂 Porgras was overrated (Runs and hides:) I never loved Ponor. Izbasa was never a fave. It’s not that I don’t see their talent but this is a list of gymnasts i like to watch. Not the best ones of all time

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

I understand your point, but I really think that Cata and Izbasa were really enjoyable to watch. And who was that Romanian kid who was really good but got injuried just before Athens? Andreea Munteanu, I think.

  2. Brainy Says:

I think one of the reasons that there are so many overrated USA gymnasts is because the Karolyis were able to pump their favorites for so many years. And with Kim running things internationally the Karolyis were able to get away with it.

I liked Ponor on beam and Izbasa’s floor. Izbasa’s form on vault wasn’t the best but it wasn’t terrible either. I remember being impressed how well she did on vault since she seemed kind of tall. (For a gymnast at least) I really liked Bulimar as well but like Larissa injuries always seemed to get in the way. I know there are more that I liked I will have to go back and look at some old routines.

Spain is not going to Europeans either. Four countries have said already that they are not going (Germany and GB amongst them). I see them being cancelled only because of lack of attendants. Or simply having enough four or five teams, with Russia, Romania and Italy in the podium.

    She was so young then!

Baby Chellsie with the pig tails was too cute. Big skill baby Chellsie is also adorable. That floor music is not. Dear Chellsie, you said your new music was like your old music. YOU’RE AN ADULT NOW. Get a real routine, Love JennAKAGTT

    • gymtruthteller Says:

And, baby Chellsie (I think she was probably like 14 here but tomatoes, tomatoes( actually pointed her toes and had some potential to dance. Please bring that as an adult. One thing I have noticed is , adult Chellsie has great leaps and jumps. I hope that continues… Did I tell you people that I got an anon e-mail that said Nastia has moved in on the Chellsie bandwagon? Yeah, much like Shawn and Nastia have done to other potential Olympians. I wish the 08 team would fade like the 2004 team

By this time, four countries has said they won’t be going to Europeans (GB, Germany, Netherlands and Spain). As situation is getting worse in Europe, I expect several more would drop out before December. Russia is adamant they are going, but Valentina has also said that many senior gymnast with possibilities for Europeans/worlds/olympics won’t go to Russian Nationals for fear of getting COVID-19. Italy has also said they will be going, but that their gymnasts will be limiting their interactions to keep them safe. I think Europeans will end being cancelled, after all, with time.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Russia will be fine with that 🙂

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

In my mind, I already have the idea of Nabieva being National Champion simply because a lot of people doesn’t show up and if nothing changes, the first qualified at Russian Nationals has to go to Worlds, so Nabieva going to Europeans at the very least as a part of the team. I am sure that even in the case Nabieva would snatch the National title, Valentina would fin a way to keep her away from the A team, but in any case, 2020 has been crazy enough so far for me to have hope in this ludicrous and loony plan.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Nabs doesn’t even make their National team. I doubt she has a chance to make their Euro team especially with all their juniors turned seniors that need experience now

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

No, I understand she is not. The point I was trying to make is that Valentina is saying that a lot of their best gymnasts are going to miss Nationals because they are scared of contracting Covid-19, so it is probable that Russian Nationals will have an unlikely winner this year, only because so many of the best are expected to miss it. But it was understood that the National Champion had an spot assured at the next big competition, so I was wondering if Nabieva, that usually go to the Russian Nationals and Russian Cup, could win with the added absence of they usually better placed gymnasts and they would have to make an excuse as to why the National Champion is not going to a these decaf Europeans (in case they take place, that I don’t think they will, to be honest. They will have to cancel two or one week before the event). But of course Valentina won’t let Nabs go even if she wins Nationals, although I would love her on Nationals’ podium.
