Why the 2020 Olympic team needs, Mykayla Skinner: January Olympic team poll included

Someone on this team needs some damn personality.

Okay, I KNOW, ” Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals” but that doesn’t mean we can’t find joy in watching this Olympic team as a group, does it?

The only time Simone shows any personality is when she wins all the gold medals. Unless she’s talking to her teammate or Jade Carey she’s off sulking on the sidelines because the team isn’t her personal cheerleader anymore so we need someone to put the personality back on this team so why not, Mykayla Skinner?

: There isn’t the jealousy angle we had 4 years ago because no prima donna’s have shown up expecting to be on the Olympic team with out earning it. The only real competition to Mykayla on this team is Jade Carey and they seem to get along really well. Jade even went to Mykayla’s wedding ( something “BFF” Simone Biles couldn’t even be bothered to do)

: Mykayla is going for it. Watch her instagram. She’s working on the triple double on floor. Upgrades on bars. Putting both hands on her Cheng. She wants this.

: IMO, Tom knows the US is going to win gold and he is going to put someone on this team to be Simone’s little buddy and Mykayla is the best bet for that ” position”

YES, I know this team isn’t being decided on personality so take this blog for what it is, a way for me to get the damn Olympic team I want and that includes Mykayla Skinner.

Don’t forget to vote in the poll.

I would love to see Makayla in the team! Not my favorite gymnast, but she has grown on me and personality wise, one of the most entertaining of USA’s team. Where do I sign?

    • gymnerd Says:

      I agree.

    • Mary Says:

I agree also. She seems to have grown up quite a bit since 2016, and nobody can argue with her work ethic.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mykayla defending herself 4 years ago was only an issue with people who already hated her. I’m not talking about the racist crap I’m talking about the retweeting the picture with her face over Gabby’s and other stuff implying she should have been on the team. She had every right to defend herself. So did Ashton Kutcher there who actually had a point (She beat Madison on bars every time except day 2 of trials (they tied a few times too I believe)

The funny thing about the people who hated on Skinner they now are friends with her on facebook and like all her posts.

      • Mary Says:

I was referring to the racist crap. FWIW. At any rate I agree with you about wanting to see her on the 2020 team.

Gymnovosti published a very interesting article of Brazil’s team and why they didn’t qualify a full team to Tokyo (and I can’t believe that Spain’s did! Still so excited…sorry). I didn’t know a lot of things that this article clarifies and I have now a lot of respect for Leticia because if she pulled out what she did with the little training she had and working at the same time, she deserves a lot of respect.

      I am hoping for Mai.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Maybe. Do you think that Japan will try for her to go the especialist route? She could go for floor. Or try by continental championship, but with China there, i don’t know…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They need her on that team. I forgot the scam cup was part of the Olympic birth crap.

      • Gymbot Says:

Japan can win a a country spot through the World Cup AA series (any team member can compete and contribute points) or through the continental champs (not a member of 2019 team). In fact, Mai could compete at the world cups and I believe also at the Asian games and net two spots for Japan, and then put her on the team.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Maybe this is why they really didn’t want Mai to be part of the team that qualified a spot so they can send her out there to get 2 more?

Monica Rosu said in an interview that Brestyan was still a possibility for Romania’s WAG team, after Raducaan said that they tried, but they weren’t able to reach an understanding. It would be great for Romania, but I don’t know if its in Brestyan best interest to link himself to the madness that is Romanian federation right now, to be honest. But we shall see. Where is Brestyan right now?

    • HartofDixie Says:

      Still need a bars coach.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

I know, but it would be an improvement, as now they need an everything coach. Also, if Brestyan was able to get several Romanian seniors to score on floor and vault roughly the same points than Aly used to get, right now, Romanian Federation would built him a temple for worshipping his memory forever.

In one part of the interview, Rosu says that the Romanian’s women program has one foot on the grave and that they need to make changes fast. At least someone from the Romania acknowledge this! Finally!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mihai is not a miracle worker.lol Aly trained with him for years. He built her strength and that allowed her to become the gymnast she was . It’s down right weird how he created two such different gymnasts . Alicia was clean and had technique and could be called artistic for the generation she was raised in while as Aly was the exact opposite. Both gymnasts had success because Mihai made them power gymnasts.

I was watching old Alicia bar routines awhile ago and she really wasn’t as bad as people made her out to be and say what you want about Aly but her bar routine was good enough. If Mihai could get Romania back to being ugly consistent bar workers they were in the days of Milo, Gina and Simona and do what he does on the other 3 events the team could fight for top 5

      • gymtruthteller Says:

This is like year 20 of us saying that.lol

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

Amen. I was watching 1996 Olympics the other day (thank you, YouTube) and the commentators were already saying that Romania needed to be better on bars. They were having already such problems that even when they were winning a lot there were comments on it. And in 2020, not only their bars have gotten worse, but they have contaminated the rest of Romanian events.

I think we all agree that Brestyan is not a miracle worker, but he is a good coach, up to the times and knows the new code, something that Romania desperately needs. But I doubt that Brestyan is going if they don’t give him some serious assurances and a lot of advantages and control. To be honest, at this point, Romania’s Federation is such a mess that they would have to promise him something like, I don’t know, an unicorn, to go to train the women’s team right now. But, who knows? Maybe they are giving him his unicorn.

It’s so interesting to see how routines have changed over the years.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Nothing she has shown me stands out. That was average for today’s gymnasts.. The other day she finally got a double front and stumbled out of it and put it online but it was obviously by the way she was acting she was having trouble getting it. She’s running out of time.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah if she wants to have a better shot then the specialist route might be better. It would be easier to train two events than all four.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It’s too late for that. I doubt they would send her to the 4 remaining competitions.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

No way they are going to send somebody to the remaining World Cups. That should be already planned, next one is in less than a month. She could always win the continental competition, although I have to say I am rooting for Andrade in that one.

      • Gymbot Says:

The Americas get two continental spots. So Andrade or Saraiva (but not both) can earn a nominative spot, and an American can earn a NOC spot (country picks the athlete).

But if the US wins through the world cups, the second spot at continental champs is wide open for B team members from Canada, A team from Mexico and other countries

  9. HartofDixie Says:

    Aly officially retires.

    • imperatorcarolus Says:

      I don’t understand…wasn’t she already retired?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She pretty much was. I enjoyed watching her win because she was so happy and looked happier than the gold and silver medalist but it was what it was.

      • imperatorcarolus Says:

I remember her as the kind of gymnast that grew on me over time. I think I saw her for the same time at 2009 World Championships and that I thought that she seemed a little robotic. But I liked her more and more each year. I wish her luck in the future, I haven’t heard of her in at least two years, except for the comments on this blog.
