Podium Training: Men

It starts tomorrow.

USA-Gymnastics has the times

I’ll tell you one thing the set up of this stadium, sucks. It looks dark. The seats are a mile away from the competition. No wonder the seats were cheap. You might as well stay home. Glad I did.

My thoughts…

I hate this introduction thing. This is a gym meet not a concert….

The US men are a mess on Vault. Penev didn’t even come close to landing his triple Yurchenko. Whittenberg fell and was out of control. I thought both guys were gonna kill themselves. Yul landed knee’s locked.

Yul fell on the Parallel Bars and on his dismount. Marvin has a messy routine and nearly put his hand down on the dismount. Whittenberg had some issues in his but he nailed his dismount.

Mikulak had a very good High Bar but he front loads his routine and then does nothing til the dismount, which he stuck. He also NEVER shuts up. This is the most boring podium I have watched, like ever. Marvin has a boring high bar routine with nothing in it. Code whoring his way through. He stalled on one move and a sloppy dismount. I looked it up he has between a 6.0 and 6.2 start value but it’s literally just a boring routine to watch. Yul didn’t do a full set.

Penev walks like he needs his diaper changed. Yul had a lot sloppy twisting form but a lot of great landings on Floor. Whittenberg OOB with what looked like both feet then he fell. He’s having a really off day..lots of sloppy landing for Penev but he stayed on his feet. Fell doing an extra pass after routine. Pretty sure he didn’t do that pass during his routine.

The US men being themselves on POMMELS Yul fell twice. Sam messed up a few times but didn’t do a full routine. Marvin hit his but hit his foot on the pommels at the end. Mr Hollie Vise had a few bobbles during his routine but stayed on and then Sam did his full routine and fell 3 times. This was the Only event the US have shown 4 guys so far so they must still be undecided. Pretty obvious who shouldn’t be competing here…

Whittenberg hit his Still Rings but a messy landing. The wires swung quite a bit during this routine but this was his best routine of the night. Alex had a great routine. The wires rarely swung for him at all. Step on landing. Nice routine for Marvin though his wires moved too but not as much as Whittenberg.

Overall not a great day for anyone but Yul ( and even his pommels were a mess)

Some videos of the training are already in Twitter. I got to see Cata, Lari, Fan Yilin and Ragan. You guys are interested in any of them?

I thought I saw Cata’s beam routine somewhere but I can’t find it, sorry. It is said that Shallon Olsen practiced a Cheng and an Amanar at training and Chuso is there, too, so I would be super excited if she could get a medal (I know there are conteders with better possibilities, but it is my heart talking, no my head).

And Nina Darwael’s bars (if she hits, I think the title is hers):

I think the judges can get her on form and some missed handstands. Her leg separations were very notceable even from the side view.

She is capable of better execution in competition, though. In the European bars final, her form was much better and her difficulty compensated the mistakes she made by far:

In any case, I have said, the bars field is packed this year and it is going to be a very exciting final. I would like to see the Podium Training of the Germans, the Chinese and the Russians. Eremina and Iliankova in a good day can get a 6.4 and a very good execution score and I want to see if Alt’s new move is credited and with which number. So excited by this final!

    Got Cata!

Sanne’s beam mount. She is going to compete the new mount we saw months before with addded connections:

    Iliankova’s bars:

Ok Fan for gold and silver for Ilyankova in my ideal world. She looked just a tad messy but I really love this routine. So different from the standard Russian bar routine.

Lari’s double-double (I think) dismount. Taking into account this will never be her best apparatus, she looks better on UB than in the last competition I saw her:

It seems that Liu Tingting has a nagging injury on one foot and won’t compete AA. Wang Yang will do it instead. Damn, I hope it is only a rumour. I was looking forward seeing her.

I was so bummed when I heard about this. This was the most excited I’ve been about a Chinese all arounder in a long time. Maybe now though she’ll be able to focus on hitting beam and medaling!

    Georgia Mae-Fenton’s bars:

Melnikova seems to be injuried too, but expected to compete AA and the finals she can get in, as Russia doesn’t have a replacement for her. Paseka and Iliankova are slighty injuried, too, and they don’t do AA and the Rodionenkos doesn’t seem to even contemplate to pull any of them off the competition completely to allow Kharenkova to compete. http://eng.gymnovosti.com/melnikova-is-slightly-injured-but-will-compete-at-worlds/

Notice how Morgan Hurd is the only one standing with flexed arms and spread fingers in front of Liukin in the team line ups. The 3 others have relaxed arms. Pretty funny as it’s every photo haha.

Watching Larisa on bars has me stumped. I’m just your average gym fan with no gymnastics experience myself but is she just extremely talented naturally on bars to be able to overcome the terrible Romanian coaching on that event? You would think if they have an athlete who is capable of a decent score on bars that they would at least be able to get 2-3 other gymnasts to a similar level, or at least to a 13-13.5 level. I’ve wondered this before but it’s just hitting me now again how much of a deficit there is between Iordache and everyone else on the Romanian team.

  16. imperatorcarolus Says:

Dammit, they are going to end up breaking her for good. I hope any of these people see reason and if she is injuried as badly as is suspected, they will take her out the rooster. This is beginning to not be about the medals, but about a girl’s health and physical integrity.

You are right. Here is the video: https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/913845983905161216. Then I assume she will stick with a 5.5 difficulty. We have at least five gymnasts with a 1.00 or 0.9 more of difficulty than her. According the last rec of scores I have seen, she is in the 25th position in the World by difficulty and the sixth by best score (but in no way she is going to get that score on Worlds. She was heavily overscored by at Nationals and Jesolo). And in this last rec they didn’t take into account the scores of other specialists that are going to compete at worlds.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Someone needs to keep track of Liukin being Marta and cheating for his favorites. Now we know why Ashton followed Nastia around at the tour.

    • Cupquaked Says:

      Wow. I’m so surprised.
