Happy 4Oth Birthday Shannon Miller

It’s hard for me to believe Shannon Miller could be 40 years old. Lets see her Mag 7 teammates forget she exists:)

IG magazine called her a US legend. I got a few e-mails bitching about this. I guess 7 Olympic medals doesn’t make you a legend, legend.

Here are 2 pictures one of those people sent me that I had never seen before.

It’s also Kristen Maloney’s Birthday too.

Shannon Miller is US gymnastics giant.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

No she is a world wide giant that apparently gets no respect

    • dianajc99 Says:

Wow I cant believe shes 40 either.

    • Aerial Says:

She’s definitely a legend. This was my intro to gymnastics – the Miller vs Zmeskal days. I preferred Zmeskal, but would never have denied her greatness, and then of course everything she achieved over the quadrennium following.
On a side note I find it hard to look at before and after pics of her – the nose, teeth, hair. So hard if you grew up with her before the changes to see her as the same person!

  2. gymtruthteller Says:

Some gymnix results. Italy was ahead by over 4 points but US is ahead now. Italy had low beam scores.

    I think 3 rotations AA:
    Classifica AA parziale: 1. Maile O’Keefe- 43.034 2. Giorgia Villa- 41.935 3. Gabby Perea- 41.3 4. Asia D’Amato- 41 5. Emma Malabuyo- 40.7

Maile it seems is consistent tho I find her a bit messy. These scores will beat the AC lol

  3. gymtruthteller Says:

    Flo has some results too
Maile had a 13.800 on floor

    • gymbot Says:

14.3 in the old code – so around what Kyla Ross used to score. It’s tough to get used to these new numbers.

  4. gymtruthteller Says:

    Classifica AA: 1. Maile O’Keefe- 55.934 2. Gabby Perea- 55.7 3. Giorgia Villa- 55.502 4. Emma Malabuyo- 54.135 5. Asia D’Amato- 53.934

    • gymbot Says:

These are all pretty good scores! You can roughly add 1.9 to each score if you want to see how this compares to last quad’s scores.

So Maile is scoring around 57.8 in the AA. It’d be nice to see Italy compete with Britain and Russia for medals at Euro.

  5. sanitynmotion Says:

I remember this beam video so well…even the comments (Daggett still annoying) but the female saying “she’s on.” Always gave me the chills because of what then happened.

I totally pretended to be Shannon Miller growing up – like doing back walkovers in my living room (never was able to do a back handspring – that was my ultimate goal but it’ll never be achieved, especially with my current-day back problems but oh well).

She was the total complete package gymnast – all grace and also very powerful. Near flawless form. She was so good at making her landings look good – even if she was a bit off she had this nack of making it look like a stick. Hilarious her Mag 7 teammates pretend she doesn’t exist when if it weren’t for her they wouldn’t have gotten that gold medal.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Shannon put something up on instagram about Dawes’s birthday but we know DoDa can’t be bothered with her teammates.Moceanu doesn’t even follow anyone of her teammates ( she might follow Kerri) Zim Zmeskal put something up.lol I signed up for instagram a few months ago to write a blog titled, my two weeks as a Gymnastics fan on Instagram but I lasted 3 days and forgot to write the blog. I even followed Nastia.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

OMG that’s hilarious! The Instagram blog idea. I can’t keep up with anything social media anymore…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I lasted 3 days. I don’t have a phone (yep probably only person on this planet without one) so I had to use a friends to sign up and after about ten pictures in a row of Nastia looking like they were taken by a photographer following her I had to stop. I REALLY wanted to ask her if she knew how narcissistic she came across with all the self portraits she put up.:) I am not meant for social media either. Though I do miss bitching about baseball on my old twitter.

      • JAS4 Says:

GTT you should come back to facebook! I miss the group chat! Speaking of Nastia any word on her wedding date? I know she asked Shawn and some others to be bridesmaids awhile back. (I am still guessing pepto pink bridesmaids dresses of course ūüėā)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I think it’s June. We never did the second part of planning Nastia’s wedding lol I also am pretty sure Shawn was only asked to be in her wedding after the tour which was months after she picked everyone else.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t even remember the e-mail I used for that account of my old one back in the day. I am so better off social media lol

    • hobarttdavid Says:

I think it surfaced after the Atlanta Games that Shannon competed with a broken wrist. Can anyone confirm?

Also does the current CoP devalue combo release moves like Shannon used to throw? Or are they too easy now? I always dug that full twist release over the high bar that she executed.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Miller had a broken wrist according to Peggy. I blogged about it. The Chusovitna is the hop full over the bar. Not sure what it is rated. Shannon was one of the few to actually land it fully rotated so maybe if you don’t do it correctly you don’t get credit. Not sure.

      • G Says:

Yeah iirc she wrote about having a broken wrist in her book too. And I beleive she competed with ankle issues (bone chips that caused inflammation/pain) at many points too.

      • gymbot Says:

GTT + hobarttdavid. That element is a D rated skill – so the same a tkatchev or toe-on full, but the previous CoPs (2006-2008, 2009-2012, 2013-2016 and the current 2017-2020) discourage it’s use. It does not count as a pirouette or a release, so it does not also fulfill either of two 0.5 requirements (release from HB to catch on HB; full pirouette).

It can be connected in bonus with any skill for 0.1. Anna Dementyeva used to compete it from 2010-2013:

It gets pirouette specific deductions based on the angle of the handstand at completion.

  6. Rocío Martínez López Says:

Nina Darwell’s new bars.I like it, truth to be told:

  7. dianajc99 Says:

So Grishinas family screwed her over. Maybe Valentinia was actually right about them.

  8. Melissa Says:

Steve Penny resignes! You guy’s all called it! AKA was fired and probably got a nice severance. There’s no way after all this he could stay so “resigning” is the cleanest way to go.

    • Aerial Says:

Wahoo!!! The article made it seem like it was a surprise and he was in the middle of a regular work day when he told them. I was thinking it would be crazy for him not to CHOOSE to resign in the growing face of so many wanting him too and as more history comes up. For so long USAG has been dedicated to praising him publicly as a response – aka Paterno and Sandusky responses. This is amazing. I bet Moceanu is laying an egg as we speak.

    • Aerial Says:

Also – some of the ppl who want USAG to clear house, love people like Luan Peszek (VP at some level?), Kelli Hill (board of directors) and Rhonda Faehn (VP.) I know Faehn is a more recent addition and apparently doing a fab job, but where does clearing house and expecting people to stand up for something and not stay silent, begin and end?

      • dianajc99 Says:

I just want P.Parilla, J.Binder and B.Kelly gone. The other board members are ok.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kelli Hill is a two faced whiny bitch. She lied to Dawes in 2000 to motivate her at the expense of Miller and in 1999 instead of being a good leader and teaching the girls to improve she whined they were robbed. She’s a self absorbed troll who broke every gymnast she ever had. I will never understand the Hill love. Rant over. Back to your scheduled program already in process..

      • gymnerd Says:

GTT, can you fill me in about how KH lied to Dawes, and about what? I’ve followed this sport forever, but either never heard about, or forgot this one. TIA.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Hill told Dawes in 2000 that Shannon was running around telling people she deserved to be on the team because of what she accomplished in her career and Dawes mentioned that in an article only problem was Hill made it up and and Shannon never said it. Hill said that to motivate Dominque. Dawes said something like I am trying to earn it unlike Shannon who thinks she deserves it based on her past success.

Hill wants to motivate DoDa fine but don’t lie about another gymnast especially when Dawes was dumb enough to say it to a reporter.

I also knew people back in the day that trained level 10 at Hills and was told Kelli was a bitch to anyone that wasn’t elite. Dawes also used to kick kids off beam and bars when she wanted to use them. Dawes also used to ignore the younger gymnasts if they talked to her. She would just walk away and ignore them.

I have no respect for Kelli Hill and can’t believe anyone thinks she was a great coach. All her gymnasts choked when it mattered.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I wonder if Shannon ever followed up with that. Like “dude, I never said that.” But whatever. Dawes comes off like a total beyotch and I think Hill used Miller against Dawes because Dawes was super jealous of Miller as a gymnast and saw her as her biggest rival. Mental games. Maybe that’s why all of her gymnasts had mental breakdowns when it mattered.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Shannon is totally clueless on so many levels.lol I bet she is one of those book smart people not smart enough to come out of the rain.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      Who is AKA?

I bet Penney got a nice severance too. Where does that schmuck go from here. The Karolyis should be held equally liable. And Marta was hoping she’d leave a hero in the gym world.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The real guilty party are the parents and Nassar. These are the 2 who should get most of the blame. I am glad Penny is history for the bull shit he pulled last year forcing Gabby on this team.

      • Gymbee Says:

I was confused by aka too, but then got it “Steve Penny resigns, aka was fired” (also known as).

      • gymtruthteller Says:

AKA doesn’t really fit. It should say, As in, fired.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Duh, sorry. Yeah, it was most likely a “forced” resignation to save dignity. He probably got a good severance. In my experience with major corporations, even the crappy people who get forced to resign for bad performance got some kind of pay-out. It’s pretty unfair really. “You did a sh*t job, but here’s some more money. Meanwhile, we generally refuse to pay our people what they are really worth because we can get away with it.”

      • gymnerd Says:

Agreed, GTT, about who the guilty parties are.

  9. KG Says:

I tell you though, the Karolyis really got away clean didn’t they?

    • dianajc99 Says:

No there are still going to be part of several lawsuits.

      • Cupquaked Says:

They are named in most of the lawsuits.

I would expect that camp and national team training is moved somewhere else.

If I were the parent of gym child who was going to the development camps, I would stop sending her until it’s moved somewhere else.

      • JAS4 Says:

I wonder if they will turn one of the woga gyms that Valeri still owns into the new national team center.

    • JAS4 Says:

Maybe that is why they were going to “visit” Romania. Maybe they are trying to escape the lawsuits here in the U.S.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They def left gymnastics because they knew this was happening

      • SS Says:

Even if camps are moved elsewhere USAG already bought them from the karolyis so they already got the $$$. I agree that the parents need to take some responsibility here (obviously easy for me to say when I’m not involved) but why are you letting your kids visit a doctor alone, in his basement, etc? However, wtf did anyone at USAG allow these kids to be treated alone and give someone access to their bunks? Frankly, why was a same sex adult not sleeping in these cabins with them? The lack of appropriate chaperoning for minors is horrific and definitely something parents, coaches, and the USAG all should never have allowed.

  11. Cupquaked Says:

You know, we were talking about what a sad state USAG is at on the SCAM cup blog but I just remembered that Ohashi was the gymnast who won that competition in 2013 and Simone fell off the beam. Then a few weeks later, Simone had to be pulled from a competition. So I would give Ragan and Riley a little bit of a break. It’s gotta be tough when the veterans leave and the new seniors are expected to fill their shoes at the same caliber as them. Add to that all the shit going down with the overseeing organization and it’s probably rough right now.

Of course, I’m not saying either of them is the next Simone Biles, because we’ll never have another one of her again. But they do deserve a little room to grow. Tokyo is 4 long years away.

Russia is so screwed. Its team ended up second in quals in Stuttgart cup after Germany, for God’s sakes and with a team of potential worlds and european candidates (Eremina, Spiridonova, Kapitonova…). What a disaster. With these scores, they are not going to get close to the podium for sure.

Found some videos! Here is Eremina’s floor:

Moceanu is putting herself in the middle of the USAG scandal and will be on Doctor Oz with Dantzscher, Antolin and Howard sometime soon.. Not for a second is she involved in this for the betterment of anyone but her own hidden agenda.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

That’s honestly gross. In many ways. This isn’t the time to get famous.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I have seen several interviews with Antoine and Dantzscher and they really should stay home . They do not come across well where as Howard is well spoken and I actually feel sorry for her . Moceanu is all about bitterness and a hidden agenda if these girls think she cates about their sell being they are brainless . Antolin has had soich plastic sugary I barely recognize her . The first time I saw her I didn’t know who she was til she spoke amd I recognized her voice and Jamie has a completely new face . It’s kind of weird how it’s the she 3 gymnasts doing the interviews . Where are the other 380 girls ? None of them want publicity it seems . I know I sound un sympathetic but it’s stating to feel like the same people are using this debacle to make themselves famous and make some money.

      • SS Says:

I don’t really agree here. With Jamie and Jeanette, it was clear from their lawsuits to anyone familiar with past gymnastics that they were the Jane Does (same with Mattie Larson who has also given interviews) so for them to come forward makes sense because their anonymity was gone anyways. Antolin especially has an unique story because she experienced Don Peters as well. The system and her parents truly failed her. There have been several college gymnasts who have come forward but they lack the “star quality” of elite level gymnasts. Many of the 380 survivors are most likely average women who don’t want to publicly share their pain when they have the ability to stay anonymous anyways. Assuming there is a hidden agenda by the general public is one of many reasons victims do not come forward. Shaming them for sharing their story just encourages more people to stay quiet. Moceanu, however, is clearly capitalizing. Yes, she’s been vocal for years about the mistreatment of gymnasts within USAG and the Karolyis but she has absolutely nothing to do with the sexual assault cases. She has said before she was not a victim so why she is being interviewed is beyond me.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I m not shaming them by having an opinion in the comment section of my blog. Sorry but I stand by my opinion. It’ clear who has the hidden agenda’s here and who doesn’t. Jeanette and Jamie are still bitter over the camps being in existence . Jamie still bitches about not getting to do the AA.
