I am surprised she didn’t compete bars at that last meet they just competed in if she plans to do them in Rio. I would think she’d want to test out her bars in competition. Unless she doesn’t have them ready and they are telling her to say otherwise to justify taking her over Larissa. (Kind of like how Maroney was on the 2012 team over Asac because they said she could compete FX even though they really knew she was injured and couldn’t)
I think she will compete them, but she hasn’t competed any bars since like 2004. I have problems thinking that she is comfortable with them and I think she just want to compete them when it is absolutely necessary, aka Río. She has been posting videos of her training bars “for fun” since the beginning of this year, so she knew she needed them for Romania to have as much representation as possible. If she throws a decent set, with all the minimal requirement, she will get into the AA final for sure, even if she ends up far away from the medals. But it makes me mad that she was capable of it and didn’t compete them in 2004 when, with the old code, her vault, floor and beam, she could have been AA medallist for sure.
This are the last UB of Cata that I know of in competition. It’s not her best apparatus, but if she is somewhat decent, she can achieve a good position in the AA in Río:
I am not sure I imagine if she did a basic routine in the 5.0-5.5 range she’d cover everything and if she could score at least in the high 12s or low 13s and hits her other events she could make AA finals.
I didn’t actually get to read the article so I was wondering if it was taken out of context or is it an actual quote? If she meant she wants more than two gold medals at this Olympics maybe she meant she wants to win at least one gold (team would be the most attainable) to add to her 2 golds from London, this is totally understandable. But to say she wants to win 3 golds in Rio is a bit absurd.
She is truly delusional. Unless Marta, Steve Penny, Oprah, Mattel, NBC and anyone else will be fixing things like they did the trials and told her not to worry – we took care of thing$. I don’t put it past Steve or Marta to do that, honestly, and that’s really sad.
Gabby looks so smug, not the sign of working really hard over these next 10 days with a great attitude. Fortunately the US can win gold in spite of her.
Other than money, does anyone have ANY insider info on why the powers that be are insisting that she.go in spite of her subpar performance and attitude? It’s clear that the press doesn’t buy the lies either. And it’s Simone who is not getting the attention she deserves due to the Gabby drama.
Happy Blog Birthday! This is the only place I go for gymnastics online and really appreciate it. You guys are the best!
I don’t think there’s any other reason other than the money and the marketing.
It was a tough enough pill to swallow when she actually made the team but if she actually takes the 2nd AA spot it will be truly awful.
Plus, she’ll probably get a medal and then everyone will say “See, Marta knew what she was doing?” and it’s like ummmmm whoever is the 2nd AA spot is most likely medalling bc the international AA field is super weak.
I’m pretty sure that Nellie Kim will give the US little beyond 3-4 golds — team, AA, BB, FX or maybe VT. And those are because of Simone. Maybe Aly picks up a medal & Laurie gets 4th somewhere as a next-quad encouragement award. Kocien makes UB final, gets 4th-5th.
OMG I live in the Cleveland area, too! Maybe we’re neighbs.
She’s doing a meet and greet at my gym and she’s selling her jewelry. When I saw it I started laughing but I couldn’t really tell anyone why.
What I WANT to ask her is why the hell we’re just hearing about the sting mat now 20 years later. I have read/watched her interviews over the years and I have her book and she does not mention anything about confusion with the sting mat on her vaults. Now it’s the 2016 round of interviews and all she is talking about is the sting mat, wtf?
I will not actually ask that though. I might just play a little dumb and ask her who she thinks will win AA- Simone or Gabby and she if she says anything juicy. I don’t really have the nerve to ask her anything salacious.
The Mag 7 has been doing interviews and I noticed it in the elle one http://www.elle.com/culture/a38123/oral-history-of-the-magnificent-seven/ that she said she didn’t have a sting mat and she usually did.
And then on twitter she was saying she had told her coach to put the sting mat down and her coach moved the sting mat out or something like that.
i have never heard her mention the sting mat ever before in any of interviews or in her book where she does talk about the vaults.
Wow! When most of the girls talk about medals they mention the team first then individual but the first thing she mentioned was AA gold. I wonder if she has been told she will be handed as many gold medals as possible if she hits. I am also expecting London scoring for her or worse. I think they will give her scores to make her rival Simone and if Simone makes any mistakes they could give Gabby the gold no matter how ridiculous that may be. I hope they don’t try to screw and/or break Simone to make sure Gabby gets the AA gold so she can be marketed and a repeat AA gold medali$t. I hope Aimee is wise to Penny and Marta games and protects Simone from that mess. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up in beam and bars finals because if it’s like London then all she has to do is hit and they will make sure she scores enough to get in.
I feel like she has GOT to be saying that per USAG media coaching. There’s no way she actually thinks she could win AA Gold and Bars Gold.
I think USAG wants to create some suspense with the four-year gym fans like “It’s the returning champ vs the newest star” as if Gabby even has a chance to beat Simone. Tim Daggett gave an interview on Gymcastic where he basically said that he had to kindof hype Gabby Douglas up during the 2012 bar finals for the four year fans. He said that he knew and that the serious gym fans knew that she had no shot even if she did a perfect routine her best possible finish was 5th or 6th but that the four year fan who just watched her win the AA wouldn’t understand and also they would probably just switch the station if they didn’t think she was in contention. It’s pretty crummy though that USAG is making their gymnasts play those games.
When Simone is up several points perhaps comments – like “that is why we have competitions the out come is never secure – after all who predicted me to will AA in 2012″. or I am going out there to win and we will all know the answer two weeks from now”. or “you always walk on the floor with the intention of winning.” ” I am best under pressure, we will see if that will ge good enough.” It’s not like she hasn’t had time to prepare answers. I can think of lots of phrases to move the marketing agenda forward without almost forgetting to list team gold and throw in such other stupid comments. No this is more reflective of her self delusional, I always get what I want, I deserve it mentality, than it is USAG hype..
Someone on Reddit wondered how this attitude can possibly be in her best interest:
“At least if she were more team-oriented now and tried to establish realistic expectations re. her individual potential, she would have a chance at a public career after the Olympics… if she keeps up this stuff, though, she’s going to be perceived by the media/general public as a total failure even if she performs at her best. “
So given everything Gabby and USAG have said, at the minimum they need her to make the bars final. Maddie, Laurie and Simone (on a good day) can beat Gabby’s bars. They won’t pull Maddie or Simone off bars in QF but they very well may leave off Laurie off bars to make sure Gabby makes the bar final. This would mean Aly gets to do bars.
Either way, this is a shitth situation but I wouldn’t be surprised to have them screw a first-year senior out of the final for Gabby.
Wasn’t going to watch, but I did. And, oh wow!. She almost forgot to mention team gold! At first I was giving her some benefit of the doubt when she used the term ” at the top” thinking maybe she means top 3, since she is not saying “gold” or “winning”, but then she definitely says “lots of gold to be had”, she wants “at least 3″and talks about how there will be “fierce competition” between her and Simone because they both want it. Clearly has her marketing marching orders and totally out of touch with her personal skill set.. I mean – bars? Even if Kocian is injured and doesn’t compete or falls, there are way too many international bar workers better than her and I don’t even expect her to make beam finals. Hard to believe the interviewer just lets it all fly by. Can you imagine a similarly outrageous comment getting a pass in some other sport? Next time I will go with my first instinct and not watch.
It’s not like Simone is unmarketable. In fact, much more so than Gabby – and if they get her to stick around – and frankly why not – she could really break records – not winning AA gold at the Olympics would put a crimp in some of that. Even if Gabby stays past the Olympics – does anyone seeing her winning another world championship? No I think the money is before Olympics and then inspirational – came back when no one thought she would. Stayed the course despite Simone’s dominance. Won “not Simone” Gold – aka Silver – or if she doesn’t make AA or doesn’t do the AA ( unlikely) then how she sacrificed for the team. I think USAG is all about hyping Gabby to the 4 year fans as threat to Simone, but long term marketing – I see no reason for them not to be planning to drop her in the grease after the Olympics and embrace Simone. Also hedges their bet against ( cannot bring myself to put it in writing).
Do I think Gabby is smart enough to see that – no. Is there a possibility USAG doesn’t see it that way – maybe- they have been myopic before – but usually they hit the $$$ right.
I agree that Simone is much more marketable but Penny seems to want to push the gymnast who are not as marketable like Nastia over Shawn in ’08 and Gabby over the rest of the team that was more marketable in 2012. I think Gabby’s sob story was the biggest reason she got Penny’s backing in 2012 but he still wants to hype her now even though there is no need to with a team full of marketable members.
Such as Aly for instance. I feel like USAG isn’t pushing her out as much which is odd.
I mean, team captain in 2012, won the most medals, returning Olympian, Captain again, did Dancing with the Stars, her parents are hilarious, all-american girl with the right values (always supporting her team mates and being a fierce competitor). What’s not to like?
Another thing I read – from the NBC fluff angle, Aly’s story is WAY more inspiring.
Wrong side of tie-break in 2012, wants redemption. Works hard to get, impossibly, even FITTER than she was in 2012. Always been the underdog, the work-horse no one thinks about.
This is WAY more inspiring than “oh I am just here to get more merchandise so I can cash in and be a celebrity which I love more than gymnastics anyway”. Gabby’s sob story from 2012 isn’t inspiring anymore.
I think Aly just comes across as bland. Nice, Likeable but bland. That’s not marketable. High energy, even controversial – that’s marketable – but the biggest thing is she doesn’t have the Olympic Gold AA medal and Gabby does. They joke about her being the grandma. Can you think of one memorable interview?
Nothing markets like AA Gold at the Olympics- It’s why Marylou is a household name and only real gym fans have any idea who Shannon Miller is. Gabby won AA gold at the Olympics and that is the fame ticket. Nastia won AA gold at the Olympics so Shawn was never going to get top billing after that. Simone both has the personality and in all likelihood will win AA gold, I see it as apples and oranges.
But what do we really want as far as marketability?
The Wheaties box, commercials. most of the time its only for the end of the year and then the following year. and then we go back to being ignored by the mainstream Media.
Ok I hate linking to the worst newspaper ever, Daily M(f)ail, but do you guys remember Aly’s accidental tweet from 2012 about her going to a club with the guy gymnastcs and that she was nervous hahaha. Quickly deleted it and tweeted about going to bed early instead lol.
Made me chuckle then and now. She was 18 in London so old enough to go clubbing and probably wanting to blow some steam after living in that stress bubble for months, but obiously also having an image to protect. Bless 🙂
I think gabby has a nagging back injury. I need a closer look to try and find kinesiology tape but I thinks he’s more messed up than Kyla. It will be interesting to see PT as she looks like she has zero endurance. At this point if Simone doesn’t get beam gold I so badly want chungsong to win. Just because I love her tiny malnourished spirit. Oh and Aly, Madison and Laurie all look thinner. Simone and gabby look the same. I don’t understand Gabby getting the cover of time magazine also like Simone did.
I honestly don’t think they look thinner, I think they look the same. I was actually expecting them to look thinner.
I feel like Gabby is basically Kyla in 2014, trying to hold on but honestly losing it quickly. She looks injured, has no indurance, and is clearly miserable. I hope that after this Olympics she can move on with her life. Look at how much happier Kyla seems now and she wasn’t even burdened with supporting her entire family.
Sports illustrated has Simone winning all the golds but bars. I think they have Laurie winning AA bronze and Aly floor silver but no other US gymnasts. Fan Winning bars and Daria bronze but I forget the rest.
I don’t agree with some predictions. I mean, Gold for USA and Simone are a given, but gold for Laurie in beam ahead of all the chinese, Cata, Aliya and Simone herself? I don’t see it. And Kocian silver in UB without taking into account how deep is the field in that apparatus this year, disregarding Dasha? Agree with floor predictions, though. And I have a lot of doubts about vault finals, because several gymnasts had improvements but we don’t know if they will be able to show it or not (or try to show it and fail). For example, if Giulia presents her new vault, she can win and if Chuso manages to land her Produnova and competes her regular vault in second place, she can get a powerful score also, so I am very doubtful in that apparatus too.
Don’t like saying anything is a guarantee – especially after Maroney last time around…but US winning team and AA is the most close to that.
Floor too – either Aly or Simone (likely Simone, if she hits…I got scared at her last Trials…she was looking tired).
I also feel like FIG wants to make it so that the US doesn’t take home “everything” and will try to give gifts to non-US gymnasts as much as they can. So I really feel like in Rio we will see a non-US gymnast get the UB gold (don’t think Kocian will even make podium) and even beam gold (Simone or Laurie might get silver or bronze, at best).
I saw Simone tired too at the end of Trials… I really hope that they have been easy on her in camps and training in Río to avoid her having a burnout in the worst possible moment! I think that, if she is okay, Simone is far ahead of any other gymnast for the AA. I think she can have a bad moment in an apparatus (an oob or a bad landing, for example) and still win. I have more doubts about the second AAer. I haven’t seen Laurie much (I have been looking for Trials in YouTube, but I just have found clips and not the whole competition), but I think that she got a lot of gifts that she won’t have at the Olympics, so she will be more approachable to other gymnasts like Chusong and Melnikova in terms of medals. And if she has a bad day in quals like McCool and Gabby surpass her, Gabby is no shape to make the podium if she has a similar performance in the Trials. I think that the most predictable final is floor finals. Both Simone and Aly are more powerful than the rest of the field and they are pretty consistent, so they should win without problems. But for the rest…I have expressed mu doubts about vault. Simone can win or not. Jong and Paseka have the same vaults as Simone or similar ones, so the execution would decide everything. Usually, Simone has better execution, but everything would be just a step away. But if Giulia presents her vault, as she expects to do, she can surpass her and Chuso too if she lands her Produnova. So Simone can go easily from being a sure bet of gold to not getting a medal at all. In UB, I think Kocian is far away from the podium. The Chinese, the Russians and probably Downie, who had improved a lot, should be ahead of her in terms of difficulty and execution. Downie had a 7.00 in European championships with a very good execution and Fan alledgely has a 7.1 difficulty with great form and Dasha and Chusong have a 0.1 of difficulty ahead of her with similar execution. So I don’t think that Kocian have a realistic shot at the medals. In beam, Simone is a contender, but Cata has improved a lot (she has gone from 5.9 in European Championships to 6.4 in the last competition I know of, and she has shown in videos new skills, so probably her D-Scores will be higher), the chinese have great beams and Sanne Wevers and Aliya have a lot surpassed the 15.500 mark this year. So Simone can medal, but it could be again a step away if nobody falls. So I think that the safest bets are team gold, AA gold and floor finals. The rest is on the air. I think it will end up being more interesting than I thought. And if USA has a fall and China don’t have any, team final could be interesting also. Their total team scores are not very far apart.
I’d have to agree. Beam and bars are most unpredictable this time around. There are lots of athletes who have very similar D on bars so it’ll come down to execution. Judges don’t seem to like Fan Lin and Downie as far as E goes, so there is no guarantee. Aliya usually gets fairly good E scores for whatever reason lol.
Laurie was way overscored at trials plus I’m not convinced she will even be doing AA. Podium training is on Wednesday–we may have s better idea then.
I think Seanne has a chance on beam too. Plus Flavia and Seda, if they decide to hit. Flavia, with a home crowd, prob will have an advantage.
Yes, Ilianchik, I forgot about Flavia. With them being home, we should expect some gifts for the Brazilian girls, but that happens almost always. I think she had a beam in the very high 14s if I am not mistaken. Seda have great scores in theory, but she is highly unpredictable, so with her it can go both ways. In any case, I think event finals will be pretty interesting and that floor final is the only one we can safely predict.
I have a gut feeling that Kocian is going to make the podium at bars EF. I hope I’m wrong because I find her bars boring and overscored. And despite the Chinese and British girls having much higher d-scores (and more interesting routines), I think they’re going to get hammered on execution – which gives Kocian that extra advantage.
I agree that beam finals is going to be unpredictable, which makes me excited to see what’s going to happen – who’s going to make finals, who’s going to end up on the podium. Would love to see Sanne Wevers and Flavia make it to finals – even more if Sanne wins gold.
Aliya has a pretty powerful beam if she connects everything and she is the current European champion in that apparatus, so she is a contender. In any case, it depends on the day she has, but I think she has a shot, but I would say that the chinese, Simone and Cata have more possibilities to medal than her.
I don’t have any confirmation about it, of course, but it’s what I think it will happen. I think they will present in quals three possible AAers because USA usually does that. As they took Gabby and Kocian especially for their UB power, they can’t left out either of them in quals. As they only can select four gymnasts in the quals, Simone, Aly or Laurie will have to relinquish their AA opportunity. Of course, it is not going to be Simone, barring any injury. Laurie has better bars than Aly, who had had problem with that apparatus before. Also, Laurie was ahead of Aly in Trials and P&G, so I think she will be given the fourth spot in the AA and the possibility to reach the final ahead of Aly. As Gabby will do UB and fits better than Kocian in other apparatus (I don’t think that Martha will let her near vault with a FTY), as well as a particular favourite of USAG, I think she will have the opportunity of doing AA. But the last competition we saw of Gabby were subpar and Laurie should be several points ahead of her, so Laurie and Simone should go ahead to the final if nothing extrange happens (like several falls or something like that). I have read some messages of other commenters of the blog saying that Laurie could be left out of UB to give Aly the opportunity of going to the final because of her youth, but USA presents very reliable newcomers with regularity that get AA titles at Worlds and great competitions (Jordyn, Simone, Shawn…) and their ages have never been an issue. Also, the problems with UB have given Aly a lot of heartaches over the years and I think Martha would want to maximize her option of two AA medals and she knows that Aly’s bars are a liability to achieve that. So I think that what they are going to do was to present Simone, Laurie and Gabby as possible AAers and Laurie and Simone should get to the finals if nothing extrange happens. Then, at Team Final, Gabby would only be used on UB and, maybe on vault. I don’t think that Gabby will classify for any individual finals. No second vault for her and her floor score is way lower than Simone’s and Aly’s and beam and UB’s field are very deep this year.
About Giulia’s vault, she hasn’t competed it yet, so it is not in the CoP. Probably will be around 6.6-6.7. Some people says that it will be around 7.00, but it seems like a bit too much for me. 6.7 is my bet. She has released some videos of her doing it, with some problems in the landings, but she can land it. In any case, I don’t know if she will finally compete it at Rio, so it is a huge question mark. If she competes her usual vault with this new one, she can be gold at vault final, but if she keeps her regular vaults, she will probably be far away from medals. This is the last video that I know of of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNWJ_byzNpo
You have good points about Aly vs Laurie but Laurie was heavily overscored at trials. Without overscoring, they r pretty much at the same level. Aly was ahead of Laurie (come in 2nd) at Pac Rim’s and PG’s and only behind her at trials. Given that they r practically at the same level, I think it’ll depend how podium training goes. Although USAG have used newcomers before, none of those were new seniors during the Olympics. Shawn and Jordyn were AA champions so I think it’s s bit different. Last time a first-year senior did AA during Quals at Olympics was McCool and we know how that went.
Regardless, either of them should be able to beat Gabby in AA.
I see your point, Ilianchik, but I think that her bars will take Aly out of the AA, because, as you have said, both Aly and Laurie should outscore Gabby, but Laurie has better bars. If Laurie is usually consistent (I haven’t know about her long enough to know that), I don’t see why her youth should prevent her for doing the AA. My point about Shawn and Jordyn was that they were newcomers when they won their AA Gold medals in World Championship, doing a great job in those first competitions. Even if Worlds are not the Olympics, I think it is pretty huge. USA has very consistent athletes, a lot of times despite their youth. In fact, I think that the recent USA gymnast that I have seen fall most times in international competitions is Gabby (she fell at UB final in 2011 if I remember correctly, fell in beam final in London and had a problem in UB final at London too that was as good as a fall). So I don’t think she should be left in the shelf because of her age and I do believe she has more possibilities of achieving an AA medal than Aly because of her bars.
International Gymnastics Camp have uploaded a video of Chuso training for the AA in their Facebook page (sorry, I don’t know how can show it here). She is shown training and landing with some consistency her Produnova. She still lands it very low, but she does it.
But she has competed and landed it several times already. Even if the mat is higher in the video (I have to say I didn’t realize that) she seems to be able to do it quite consistently. I have never seen Pena land it and she got into an Olympic final. I really think Chuso can pull it off.
Great to see an article in a Spanish National Newspaper about Simone: http://deportes.elpais.com/deportes/2016/07/31/actualidad/1469989149_977144.html. Its title is “Does anybody can stop Simone Biles?” and it is pretty good. It made me laugh because like two weeks ago they did another article regarding the possibility of the Russian gymnasts being forbiden to compete and they said “[…] there was a great duel between the beautilful Russian gymnast Viktoria Komova and Gabby Williams”. Gabby is so unknown in Spain that even a specialized journilist doesn’t know her name. And today it is still written like that because nobody have called the mistake off. Even the people who commented it!
A Spanish Sport Newspaper have announced Komova’s retirement: http://www.marca.com/otros-deportes/2016/06/16/5762ceb1468aeb2e208b458e.html. Do any of you know something else about it? I think they have mistaken her retirement from Río Olympics with a full retirement. I haven’t heard anything from more reliable sources and this article comes from the same publishing group as the newspaper who says that the last Olympic AA gold medallist’s name is Gabby Williams, so I don’t put much weight to their words, but you never know.
Thanks for the news, Ilianchik. Her injury is way more serious that I imagined. In any case, it’s not a retirement announcement, as she says she will retire only if she can’t recover. Probably the Spanish Newspaper got in wrong.
So the team name is supposedly something meaningful. I wonder if it’s going to be something to do with Marta retiring like SwanSongFive, SwanSong, MartFive, KarolyiFive, FinalFive, FinaleFive, GrandFinaleFive. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not FinalFive because it’s Marta’s last year and the last year of teams of five
if you’re going for alliterations, Formidable Five would be good too. Probably depends on whether they get tagged before or after the games. If by some magic the US swept Gold in AA and all events then definitely the Gold squad. IF they get Gold and Silver in AA and manage another 7 – then the Medal Machine. I think currently the 2008 team holds the record with 8 total medals, and I think 9 is probably the max the US could possibly do – and would be an impressive milestone likely to stand for some time. Team, 2 in AA, beam and floor, 1 in vault and bars – unless the waters part and we got 2 in bars ( Gabby was 8th out of 8th last time out and not looking better while the rest of the field is)
I have mixed feelings about Hong’s TTY. On one hand, I think she won’t compete it. She need too much help in the video for being able to land it safely and with a good score just a few days later and it is rumored that she has been training it since 2008 and, two Olympics later, she has never competed it. On the other hand, she is near 30 years old (her age controversy still stands, so I am not sure) and it is probably her last Olympics, so if there is a moment to risk it, it’s now. So maybe she will do it. In any case, the vault final is getting very, very interesting.
Definitely think this means she thinks she is doing All Around. But it makes who you leave off even harder. I would’ve at least waited till after the games to see how they pan out before going pro right? If she doesn’t win any individual medals her marketability isn’t worth as much. Aly Raisman’s net worth is only $500K and she two individual medals with her team gold.
So that means that Madison is the only member not pro now. I wonder if she is contemplating going pro (or maybe right after the Olympics). I am sure Penny would love a team that was all pro lol! I also wonder if they told her that if she wanted a shot at AA she then she needed to go pro.
Kocian is the only one that said definitely no and that she was going to UCLA. Not I’ve even seen a personality out of her- although if she manages to pull out a Bars Gold medal, I predict a change of heart. Not sure just a team gold would persuade her. Jordan has spent so much time crying over not competing NCAA you would think that would give them pause. Although she did backtrack in a recent interview saying she would make the same choice again – she just thinks the rules aren’t fair for her – I mean the female gymnasts and NCAA should exempt just them from the rule. Sorry, I know lots of girls who would trade NCAA for a trip to the Olypmics- no sympathy here.
1) Her elite career is almost over. Even a bar gold won’t persuade.
2) Kocian is so injury prone. The minute she’d go pro, she would get injured prob,
Laurie still has a few elite years in her so it makes more sense. She also had AA potential. If not at Olympucs, then def World’s so it makes more sense for her. They can also market her as the first Latina to win gold, etc so more money there for her.
Simone or Laurie will be doing DWTS in the spring, I’m sure.
And don’t forget they are hyping Laurie as the first Hispanic since we-don’t-remember-when- sorry-we-forgot-she-even-existed-when we -first -announced -Laurie, which gives her a whole other marketing niche to tap over the next few years. I don’t see Kocian going pro either – for all the above reasons – and I am betting part of the Jordan boohoo-can’t -do -NCAA talk is geared towards keeping Kocian on board for UCLA. But then I’m jaded.
Wasn’t Tracee Talavera the first one? I just remember Annia Hatch, who was Cuban, but I don’t know if she counts as hispanic-american as, if I remember correctly, she wasn’t born in USA neither was raised there. Laurie has a great marketing potential there.
Oh and they are using the phrase “Latina” so I stand corrected on the proper PC way to categorize her. Although I can never quite get when I am supposed to categorize someone by ethnic background and when I am not. If they are doing something good and noteworthy you do?
Shade global page is down, maybe they were in talks, and it was a prep page? It’s been removed she’s not 18 so her parents would have to sign. IF so its another elite decommitted from Florida, with bailie key, Aly Baumann and probably jazzy not far behind.
Didn’t Baumann actually sign a letter of intent last year and just ask to defer for a year for her elbow to heal? Since she signed she would have to give up a year of eligibility after she got special permission from the NCAA to defer unless Florida released her from her signed NLI. So she couldn’t compete until 2019 – not sure skipping Florida is worth it. Unless she decides to hang around for another cycle.
I don’t think she asked to defer. I think she was told to defer. They don’t want to red shirt her. She had a four year deal like Peyton, they’ve already stolen or completed the transfer of an EMU gymnast who fills a vault floor spot as a junior this week and rumor has it the new coach wants to transfer in someone else. These transfers have been in the works for several months.
It would have been fun 🙂 I originally wanted to be Abomb and ban everyone for fun but just the Nastia fans 🙂 and I probably would have been a total dictator and done just that but I think we would have had a lot of people that couldn’t stand her and her bad attitude and the place would have thrived.
Started five days ago, makes me think someone failed a drug test, or someone is really injured. Ragan would replace Aly or Laurie though for beam and probably not Maddie or gabby. INteresting nonetheless
She says IF someone gets injured, etc.
Are the only go fund me’s for alternates?? Locklear and Ragan?
I personally dont get the alternate thing with gymnastics. Imagine if every other sport sent 3 alternates for every 5 people. Or do they?? You never hear a peep about replacements for other sports and yet these 3 girls got to be in the official photos and part of the official hurrah (though the men didn’t.)
Seems like in the past we did not have so many alternates – and I am thinking they did not all travel – but maybe that was the men- but I’m too lazy to look. I guess when they dropped the number who can compete, they didn’t drop the total number in the squad when you include the alternates.
I would be surprised if they replaced anyone even if there is an injury. I think they would use Madison first. The only one I could see maybe getting replaced is Madison if she were injured I could see them bringing in Ashton. Unless Gabby was told she could be replaced with Ragan as motivation or something.
I could see her threatening to replace Gabby (or any of them for that matter) right up until the last minute to “motivate” them. I hope that Laurie didn’t go pro thinking that she would do AA but then doesn’t due to Marta games. Although I hope her coach and parents would be more careful than that.
I doubt they would replace anyone unless it was an insane injury.
And I can totally see why ragan’s parents would want to go, though why they would start a go fund me this late is beyond me. Maybe they just found out about being able to do that or something.
Also, I can understand Laurie going pro. Like everyone has said, hey will make a big deal about her being Latina, and she’s pretty marketable. She’s Latina, bubbly, and her routines exude personality. Whether or not you’re a fan of her floor, or her style in general, it is definitely memorable. Even if she “only” rakes in a $100,000 that would still pau for college and pro status would afford her lots of unique opportunities. Aly hasnt made as much as some gymnasts even with a few Olympic medals, but it is much more than she would have gotten with just a scholarship, let alone the cool things she has been able to do. Laurie has also had a few injuries and maybe she feels like four years or college gym would be too much. If she got injured halfway through school she would lose her scholarship and wouldn’t be able to go pro then.
My issue with Ashton’s page is they state she made the team and never mention that she’s an alternate.
If people want to donate they should of course feel perfectly fine doing so, but I found both pgs to be misleading about their actual status.
Laurie did not go pro. That was a floater page meant for internals only at shade global, which is why it is gone. It just means her parents have talked to agents. At this point it makes sense to wait and entertain offers after the Olympics she can’t do anything now and her parents would sign like Gabbys mom did.
Inside Gymnastics published on FB that she’s gone pro and signed with Shade.
“Laurie Hernandez of Old Bridge, N.J./MG Elite, has decided to forego her collegiate eligibility and has officially signed with Sheryl Shade of Shade Global. Hernandez, currently a member of the U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Team, plans to continue in elite gymnastics for the next four years and compete on Team USA.”
The press release says she plans to do Elite for the next 4 years so it kind of makes me feel that perhaps she is not doing AA. If she knew she is doing AA, she wouldn’t say that prob as would want to take a break after presumably winning silver.
I am getting so sick of these two! I liked Shawn enough when she was competing, I never liked Nastia as she was the original personality-less frozen Elsa. But these deals they are suddenly getting again… they aren’t relevant, and who wants to wear their clothing? (OK, maybe especially in Texas, if it’s leotards, but otherwise???)
I also think it’s SUCH a joke they’re suddenly besties after years of Nastia being shitty and nothingness. I know that as adults you can patch things up, but anyone who’s older than twelve must find it all a little contrived and desperate.
Beats getting a regular job though!!
Really the tragedy of the sport. If it’s Gabby I will LOSE IT. This time around she will UNinspire a nation. Though I wasn’t a fan last time around either. I would be happy with either above combo – Simone + Aly gives Aly the chance to go for her dreams of AA v2.0, and Simone + Laurie gives the world a chance to see… Laurie. Which is such a treat. Instant star, regardless of her finish!
Then throw in the possibility of Gabby and my stomach totally twists.
It was sad enough when Weiber, ranked fourth after prelims couldn’t compete. Now it will be a total loss for multiple Americans that don’t proceed. Though as I said I would be thrilled if Gabby didn’t do AA.
So shitty. Seriously missing the days of everyone (or almost everyone) doing AA on a team that was actually the size of a legit team.
