Rotation 4

NBC interviewed Laurie Hernandez and Simone but did not interview Aly. They don’t even try and hide their bias do they?

OVERALL:  What BS scoring tonight. The beam judges need to be drug tested as do the bar judges. They don’t care about fairness or legit scoring they only care about whom  they and want on this team and whom they don’t. I guess placement matters more than scoring but the US ends team finals on beam at the Olympics and if these kids are tired now imagine how they will feel in a month?

I just day dreamed through most of Laurie’s floor. It’s just there for me even if she at least tries to sell it unlike others who walk through it.

Same DTY for Gabby. Big step. Totally piked. Tim says her stock is up after all her mistakes lol OMG ARE YOU WATCHING THE SAME THING AS I AM

Simone bobbles on beam but she stayed on. Not her best. Short on her dismount big step forward.

Multiple mistakes for Maggie on bars and remember when jas wondered if having Maggie do bars and beam was to screw her over like they did Chellsie? I guess we will see if she gets named to Trials.

Great routine for Aly on beam. Step on dismount and not as perfect as night one but still rock solid.

Skinner bombed beam big time. Nice to see the girls support her but that was brutal. Makes you wonder why the National Broadcasting company felt the need to show Mykayla on her worst event while ignoring the only 2 routines she would be used for in a 3 up, 3 count but at least they mentioned it. Watching this competition with an every 4 year fan that now hopes she makes the Olympic

Kutcher big bobble on beam. Still got a 14.150. Most ridiculous score of the meet

Rotation 2 and Rotation 3

Right commercial Nastia like Nastia wasn’t making fun of Shawn to her face and behind her back and like you drink coca cola you hack.

Skinner hit her Chang. Big Amanar from Skinner with messy landing.

Ragan off bars. okay so Ragan needs to be consistent but Gabby doesn’t and you want Gabby as a bars specialist? Do people believe these commentators???????????????

Nailed Amanar from Simone. That was near perfect even form. Bouncy piked Chang.

Baumann had a messy beam but she stayed on.

Laurie hit her messy leg bar. I like the leo. 15.150. She is not getting these scores in Rio. her bar routine is to messy for these scores.

Step messy Amanar from Aly but good for her.

Much better beam from Gabby but still missed connections and her switch ring wasn’t even close. Can’t wait for this score. 15.050 Very generous esp compared to Baumann’s beam.

Ashton hit bars but it was a lot slower than night one which was a lot better. Small step.

3 bobbles for Laurie on beam and her switch ring was not even close to a ring but she stayed on. 15.300 is a joke for all her bobbles.

Both feet OOB for Gabby on her pass with the back flip connected. 14.450 when her night one walk through was clearly better. Only deduction they took is the 3 tenths for stepping out.

Nice bars from Aly. Better feet form than day 1

Better beam from Ragan but still had a bobble ..

Rotation 1

When Marta admits Gabby would still be on her team after night 1 and we try and pretend none of this is fixed. There is a camp after trials so Marta pretending there is any chance this team isn’t already chosen is crazy.

Gabby nearly falls and still gets a 14.500 on bars.

Great floor for Aly and a Red Sox shirt for her brother in st Louis. Haha something I would have done.

Look at the flight says Tim as Maddie Kocian  barely makes the grab. Much better than night one for bars. 15.7

Maggie hit her beam and only got a 14.3 something.

Hernandez messy DTY got a 14.800

Alyssa hit bars but missed handstands…

Simone’s floor was much better landed than night one but she got half a tenth less. lol Marta is trying to keep this close? I don’t get it?

I guess Nastia, Tim and Al were NOT watching 2 nights of Nationals because they are still naming Gabby with what she just did for

    Day #2 Drinking game
1 sip when Nastia says “It’s not as difficult as Simone’s”
1 sip when Tim say “Gymnastics 101-stick the landing”
2 sips when anybody mentions Gabby’s London performance
2 sips when anybody falls and AL says “that’s bad”
3 sips when anybody says “marta looks happy”
Finish your drink and get a refill is we see or hear and mention of Huntley, gowey, desidirio, dennis or gaskins

  2. H Says:

My Monday will be interesting soon 4am over here … but gymnastics it is

  3. Akshay Says:

Gabby just made another major mistake on bars. What happened?

    (Yes, I’m back).

  4. dianajc99 Says:

    WOW GD- good save

  5. Ilanchik20 Says:

    Good start. Lol.

Gabby almost falls off the bars. And lots of missed handstands.

  6. Gymnast41 Says:

And with that gabby is done

    • gymtruthteller Says:

we still have trials and the secret camp

      • Akshay Says:

Considering Trials for Men’s Gymnastics was yesterday, I keep forgetting that this isn’t trials. Good point.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

      • Gymnast41 Says:

Hahaha I meant for the weekend. No way she’s getting top 3 anything now

      • Akshay Says:

Hey there, GTT! I checked out for a while – busy with classes/looking for work and this quad seems mostly boring/predictable anyway. But I’m officially back.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

AKSHAY and now we need fat kid back and we are complete

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

Your wish is granted GTT!!! 😀

Sorry, life is crazy right now. But i’ll be dedicated to the site for the next few months at the very least. I’ve decided to tell work to go to hell. LOL. I’ll do as little of work as I can to get by so I don’t get fired, but these next few months are mine. I miss it here. ESSPECIALLY AFTER WATCHING NATIONALS! I need my people! 😉

    • Laura Says:

you would think…but for some reason the selection committee keeps hanging on even w/ mistakes

      • Gymnast41 Says:

But why would they bring her if she can’t hit consistent routines anymore ughhhhhh drives me crazy. She’s just as much as a lock as don don was before nationals and look what happened…I honestly don’t know anymore

      • Case Says:

Because the Simone vs Gabby storyline, regardless of how contrived it is, will be media gold.

Natalie Douglas booked her ticket to Rio a long time ago, I’m sure.

      • Laura Says:

I agree with you completely…hopefully they will wake up and elect not to keep her. It was easier w/ Nastia in 2012 to leave behind…but Marta has the thought that Gabby always comes through and needs that extra pressure, so she basically says it’s ok to be lazy and not work out as hard as the others throughout the year, but I’ll take you anyways 😦 but maybe her natural talent is running out and she’s faltering because or poor conditioning

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Except Donnell is not the defending Olympic AA champion, the men aren’t going to get a fraction of the attention that the women get at the Olympics, and putting him on the team wouldn’t bring in $$$ for USA gymnastics.

  7. Case Says:

Gabby…yikes. She is going to be on the team no matter what but I gotta tell ya, I don’t think she should be.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I agree but we don’t matter and neither does fairness

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yeah, she’s on the team already. It sucks.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

If she messes bars at trials and doesn’t place high enough AA, Marta may be able to leave her at home. Since they announce the team at trials, something weird and justifiable would need to happen to camp for them to switch her in.

        I’m still holding onto hope.

      • Mim Says:

If only Martha can do this ONE thing before she retires. Cmon Martha, do the right thing if GD screws up trials.

  8. tennisgrl456 Says:

Maggie had a MUCH better beam

  9. Akshay Says:

Laurie’s vault was okay, but not that spectacular in terms of lift or distance from the table. A little sloppy in terms of twisting form too.

    • Gymbot Says:

But scored nearly the same as two vaults with better form, amplitude and distance. Lauries run to vault looked painful

  10. Akshay Says:

In regards to her tumbling, Simone’s floor routine is obviously unmatched. I’m a big fan of hers, but not a huge fan of her current floor music.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I hate the routine but it grows on me with each watching but I agree its the same as her last one. So is Aly’s

    • Case Says:

I could sing live karaoke during Simone’s floor routine and she would still kill it. She is unbelievably talented.

    • Uglyfatkid Says:

Couldn’t agree more. The music does nothing for me. And the choreo is a remix of her last routine…which doesn’t necessary bother me. But, it just doesn’t feel as balanced and well matched as her previous one. The music…PLUS the choreo…it’s just off somehow.

I still love her though. Her tumbling is fantastic, and her dance elements (wolf turn, jumps, etc.) are done well.

At the end of the day she could go out there and walk through a routine to a recording of Nastia’s repeating:

      “As Tim said”
“I talked to her earlier in the week”
      “You know” (see note*)

…And I would still be okay with it. Biles can do no wrong in my book.

*Note – Nastia says this in almost every sentence. It bugs the shit out of me. Can’t they get a commentator who doesn’t need to use the phrase, “You know” in almost every sentence?

  11. Akshay Says:

“As of right now, you can’t leave [Gabby] off the team” — Nastia.

Well, there you have it folks!

  12. katecoursey Says:

Aly’s floor…be still my heart. I’m so glad she’s hitting. That first pass still wows me every time.

  13. Case Says:

Oh Ragan. Best of luck kid.

  14. dianajc99 Says:

  15. Ilanchik20 Says:

They didn’t show it but Skinner got 14.9 on floor. This could make things interesting.

  16. Ilanchik20 Says:

Even better amanar from Aly tonight.

  17. Gymnast41 Says:

Well dang. That was a great beam from gabby. Not gonna lie

    • Gymbot Says:

A nice recovery after her bars. She has discovered this weird arm swing the mykayla skinner also uses, but hers seems angry and aggressive. I preferred her finish positions on her skills in 2012, arms straight up like Shawn

  18. dianajc99 Says:

    Isn’t it pronounced DON-ell

  19. dianajc99 Says:

    go Reagan

  20. Exgymgurl Says:

So happy to see Gabbys scores, I’m not where I can watch but I’m checking

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

She practically fell on her 2nd pass and stepped OOB with both feet–that should not have been 14.45.

  21. Exgymgurl Says:

Please let me know if this is atleresque… For gabby I’m dying that I’m missing it.

  22. Exgymgurl Says:

And with that bars score, Aly should beat Laurie because she has beam…..

  23. dianajc99 Says:

any simone can go up with the level 3 compulsory routine and still win.

  24. Exgymgurl Says:

Looks like if Kocian throws an dty, skinner will beat her AA… Lmao go skinner!!!

  25. Exgymgurl Says:

Fty…. Sorry i meant if Kocian throws an fty

  26. Akshay Says:

Did Al just say “to a very annoying woman who won the gold” in reference to Nastia?

If so, I take back everything negative I’ve ever said about him.

  27. dianajc99 Says:

Wow that was the first time I could actually hear Laurie’s music.
A double stag jump would look good after the third pass.

  28. katecoursey Says:

Simone’s beam looked a little shaky…almost fell on her dismount. WRAP HER IN BUBBLE WRAP USAG

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

I think they should give her a pass at trials lol.

As she walks away angry and says “that was like the worst routine ever” haha.

      • katecoursey Says:

HA did she actually say that? I’m watching the international feed because I don’t get cable :/

And honestly I actually do think they should give her a pass at trials. She’s as much of a lock as there’s ever been for a US Olympic team, and I swear, if they break her with death camps and pre-Olympic competitions…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I triple that. She shouldn’t have to go to trials

  29. dianajc99 Says:

did she hit her head at the beginning?

  30. Allie Says:

Omg they have to rest Simone. Her comment about her legs being heavy scares me. She’s clearly tired. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

  31. Gymnast41 Says:

Aly needs a 15.45 to tie Simone on beam!

  32. Ilanchik20 Says:

Two 4/4 days for Aly. Yay!

  33. Akshay Says:

Poor MyKayla Skinner. That routine was rough.

  34. Gymnast41 Says:

Geez mykayla skinner 3 falls on beam…ouch

  35. Ilanchik20 Says:

Skinner with 2 falls on beam and a fall on dismount. The 2nd one looked painful.

    • katecoursey Says:

She added a nice little wrist flick to the second one though 🙂

      • G Says:

I noticed that too, it was sad. Gosh I’ve disliked her for so long but now I just feel bad. She’s stuck around at this high level for four years, upgrading and trying to clean up her routines just to most likely be left at home. Such is life I guess.

      • gymnerd Says:

        I feel the same, G.

  36. katecoursey Says:

I’m sorry, but if trials looks anything like this, Laurie and Aly both deserve to be on that Olympic team and they both deserve to vie for the second AA spot. Aly especially deserves the shot.

Skinner…ouch. Rough beam for her :/

  37. H Says:

Thanks gymbot. So worth being up to night, I am so happy Aly did it!

  38. dianajc99 Says:

Funny the corporate name of the arena keeps changing because nobody can stop calling it “the shark tank”

  39. Ilanchik20 Says:

Gabby is 4th AA and doesn’t make top 3 on any event. Life is good, haha.

I don’t even like Laurid that much but bless her for beating Gabby.

    • Guest Says:

But I bet Martha will still provide her free pass advance to Rio and a spot to compete AA qualification. 😦

  40. Gymnast41 Says:

Laurie, Aly, and Simone. Top 3 AA, top 3 FX, top BB, and Laurie top 3 UB and Simone VT. Those are your locks for rio and the ones who should be battling it out for AA in Rio. Gabby may as well be that 4th spot because she’s the next best thing, but there’s NO WAY she should be AA in qualifications over Aly and Laurie. Bring her to contribute to the team, but she is clearly not the 2nd or 3rd AA’er. I refuse to believe that she will be in the AA final in rio.

That fifth spot is a bloodbath between locklear, Kocian, and Nichols. I feel for Maggie who didn’t make a case for herself this weekend by any means, and both Kocian and locklear did their jobs.. However, Kocian is just a better choice than them at the moment just because she actually did pretty decent as an AA’er this weekend. Maggie is gonna need to kill it at trials…if she does, like she did at worlds I honestly don’t see Marta leaving her.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Maggie needs to do AA and be top 4 and she probably gets alternate spot. Gabby will go to secret camp after trials and make the AA over Aly who had a great bars set tonight for her and still got the same score she got night 1. I bet international judges give that routine a better score.

      • Gymnast41 Says:

Yes I agree, and that amanar has to be consistent and just as good, if not better than before..I’m still confused about aly’s bar score too?

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

Agreed. If Maggie doesn’t have the Amanar and isn’t constant at Trials, she isn’t going. Which is really sad, because I was rooting for her before the injury.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

I think it’ll be between Kocian and Nichols for the 5th spot. I feel like a back to full strength Nichols would be taken over Kocian so we’ll have to see how that goes. But there is also the fragility factor when it comes to Maddie. I don’t know how her body is going to hold up competing the AA two more times and then going to the death camp.

      • dianajc99 Says:

anybody know when the death camp is scheduled for?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Right after Trials where the team is supposed to be named

      • dianajc99 Says:

so trials, Death camp, processing in Houston than to RIO.

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

WAIT….the team won’t be named at Trials? It will be named at the death camps? Last quad it was named at Trials. Did it change?

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

They r naming it at trials, like in 2012.

After they name the team and alternates, everyone 5+3) goes to Olympic camp. If something weird happens there (I.e an injury), they’ll bring an alternate but Marta won’t do it, unless there is an injury, if only because she will need a real explanation since is named at trials.

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

        Gotcha! Thanks! 🙂

    • Guest Says:

Don’t forget how GD still can compete qualification AA in Worlds even though she finished 5th place of AA in Nationals.

      • Tortuga Says:

This is what scares me. They might try to justify putting GD up for AA after a “major improvement” at camp behind closed doors. Even though everyone was outraged and saw through that bull shit last year.

  41. Mim Says:

I’m at work and DYING that I haven’t been able to watch. Only sneakily managed to catch Mykayla’s screw up on beam and Ashton’s beam. Looking forward to watching when I get home and reading all your commentary thoroughly 🙂

  42. tennisgrl456 Says:

Trials are Top 8 AA plus Desiderio, Dowell, Gowey, Locklear, Nichols, Schild, and Skinner

  43. dianajc99 Says:

The gymnasts selected to advance to the Olympic Trials in San Jose next month are:
Baumann, Biles, Desiderio, Douglas, Dowell, Gowey, Hernandez,
Hundley, Kocian, Locklear, Nichols, Raisman, Schild, Skinner and Smith

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Is anyone missing we thought would be there?

      • Gymbot Says:

Key 😭 and I am sad for Nia Dennis, but I don’t think anyone expected her to go to trials

      • Mim Says:

Not that I thought she would be there at trials, but Emily Gaskins was in 20th place AA. Can’t believe how much she has regressed!

  44. Guest Says:

    Is it a bit weird?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

It’s days like this I miss twitter. Someone needs to send that screen cap where Nastia makes fun of Shawn’s gold

      • Guest Says:

Maybe the time changes, she was not so mean as before (but still mean in general standard) so she tried to make friend with Shawn that is beneficial to her own image. Also Shawn is too nice to forgive how Nastia treated her or throwing shade to her on these days.

  45. tennisgrl456 Says:

Just a note…the US doesn’t end Team Finals on beam. The rotation for team finals is yet to be determined. I think they end qualification on beam. The top two teams from qualification get to compete in Olympic order (VT, UB, BB, FX)

    • dianajc99 Says:

what are the odds of usNOT being in the top 2 teams after prelims?

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I would say that the odd are scarce. They would have to be a very bad qualification day and China, Russia and GB to be perfect to surpass them. They would have to be in the last group of qualifiers to finish the competition on beam, as the first two teams begin in vault, the next two on UB, the next two on beam and the last two on floor. If USA has a horrible qualification they could begin at the most in the second group, in UB and finish on vault, as they had to do in 2010. The other teams are ages away from them.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

We’ll be top 2, I was just mentioning this bc in the main blog post it says that the US is ending on beam.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

Ah, ok. I think that is in quals. In quals, if I am not mistaken, the order is by drawing lots, so it’s entirely possible for them to end on beam. I haven’t seen the quals’ order yet, so I can’t tell you more. 😦

  46. JAS4 Says:

I know the team will be named at trials but this year I really wouldn’t be surprised if the team if changed at camp or if the team isn’t changed then there will probably be special camp scoring to determine who gets to compete AA.

    • Tortuga Says:

No one has been replaced from an announced team since Morgan White in 2000,they do everything they can to not replace anyone so I don’t see that happening. But the second AA spot will definitely be behind the scenes show down till they walk out for qualifications.

      • dianajc99 Says:

They don’t do anything to replace them after processing? now is processing first or is the camp?

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

The trials r super late so I think the roster is due s day or two after trials. So I agree, the team won’t change after trials unless there is a major injury. But I’m during they’ll be battling it out for the line-up spots until the last moment.

      • gymbot Says:

I agree there would be some testing of the athletes after to determine QF positions, but surely 3 gymnasts will get to compete for AA in quals? I don’t think a team could be organized so that 3 do not compete in QF, Kocian and Locklear both go.

      • Tortuga Says:

Gymbot, I wasn’t clear but I meant second AA spot as in who all gets to compete all four in qualifications to make the 2 per country cut off. I think Martha will let 3 people compete AA in QF to maximize potential if any falls happen.

  47. Guest Says:

Simone winked at Shawn during her floor routine… May be the best moment of Natonals. 🙂

    • Tortuga Says:

Part of me wants to believe she winked at Shawn like “I’m going to win the AA gold and dedicate it to you, because you should have won in 2008.” lol. Wishful thinking.

  48. sanitynmotion Says:

I’m just pissed Gabby will be taking up a spot deserved by someone else…probably Maggie.

    • Tortuga Says:

Hoping Maggie somehow knocks it out of the park at trials but I’m getting nervous. At least Aly and Laurie are killing it.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I do too. I feel like the writing’s on the wall though. Maggie had a decent bar routine and got a really low score.

I hope at Trials Maggie does an awesome amanar (I still wouldn’t want to use Aly’s if I didn’t have to) and floor and cleaner bars.

        Here’s hoping…

    • gymmom2 Says:

Not a fan of GD, but not sure Maggie will be back full strength at the consistency needed. And while Simone can probably get away with sloughing some at camp to save her body, no one else will be able to pull that off. Not sure Maggie would survive the death camp. we will know much more in 2 weeks. Especially if GD spirals down. However, I think her desire to stay in the money will motivate her to focus these last few weeks. I see a good chance she doesn’t do AA – takes one for the team or has some nagging “injury” that keeps her out of one event. Then she doesn’t have to face going from AA Gold to not making the podium.

  49. Rocío Martínez López Says:

Just catching up now… Kocian ended just 0.2 points after Gabby and a little more than one point before Skinner with three falls in beam? Was Gabby that bad yesterday too?

  50. H Says:

Anyone thinks that the committee will actually decide upon two AA gymnasts before qualification? If Gabby underperform I have a hard time believing they give the spot to a junior? And I think it is easier to hit 4 for 4 in AA if the chosen does not need to have that additional “stress” during qualification … (read: I want Aly to be the second AA, and this will suit her well:-) And … it was hard for them all in 2012 luckily Jordan was pro about the whole scenario and didn’t let it affect her during TF.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I suppose it’s possible, but USA usually present three AAers in quals, maybe to maximize their options or see which one of them perform better under such preassure and circumnstances. In 2012, they took Gabby, Jordyn and Ally, in 2008, Shawn, Nastia and Bridget Sloan did it (I think that Chellsie was appointed to be the third AAer before her injury, but I am not sure) and in 2004 Courtney McCool, Kupets and Carly Patterson did it. In 2000 it was normal, as three all arounders of each country could compete in the individual finals. But this is the trend and I have trouble believing that Martha could change the pattern this year, specially when she had a lot of AAers to choose for the third spot in quals.

    • Guest Says:

I think the rules sucks. I don’t understand why the number of participants in event per country in qualification round is also limited.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I don’t know exactly were the number of AAers per country was reduced from three to two. I know it was after Romania won all the medals in the AA in 2000 (before Raducan was strapped from her medal) or so I have read, but I don’t know more.

  51. Guest Says:

“In the all-allround, she won the silver medal to a very annoying woman who took the gold.”

One of the best quote in my mind. LOL

  52. gymmom2 Says:

Based on some of the comments by our illustrious crew about Gabby, coupled with the new found adoration of Laurie, I think they may be setting the stage for Gabby not to be the 3rd AA – I find it harder ( short of a fall at trials) to see them leaving her off or putting her as an alternate, but in my mind I can hear the rationalization about maximize event medal count. Don’t think we are there yet. Hate to be too PC, but Laurie fills out another ethnic spot and has a much more marketable personality – so I think her going makes it easier to push GD aside. And USAG also loves a first year senior to rise up and be a dark horse contributor.

  53. JAS4 Says:

Looks like this will be Marta’s team

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I still don’t understand why Marta is essentially wasting 2 of 5 slots for bar specialists that won’t have much chance at individual medals: Gabby (because she won’t be used on anything but bars, which is pathetic given she’s not even top 3 in the US) and Kocian (who injures herself like it’s her job).

I see this as basically Maggie getting screwed again.

And thank God for Aly and Laurie – I can totally tell that TPTB are pimping her out. I just wish Bailey was in the mix or even Maggie at 100% because I would love it if Gabby were like 7th place at Trials.

    • JAS4 Says:

I also wouldn’t be surprised if this is this is the reason Maggie was told not to do AA. If Marta/Penny knew from the last camp how Gabby was performing maybe they used Maggie’s previous injury to make sure she didn’t pass Gabby in the rankings too.

      • H Says:

I find this comment from Marta/Martha (in what way would she likes us to spell her name… never mind, another story) since she has been selling in quite strongly that Maggie will be fine and that she is hoping Maggie will be fine. Also, my gut feeling says she really would have preferred Locklear over Kocian. (But it is a 5 member team etc bla bla points). I dont know, something is off .. go figure H.

  54. sanitynmotion Says:

Did anyone else think that Laurie’s vault was way overscored?

I only saw night 1 so far, but her vault was short (distance from the horse) and she didn’t get much height, and it was like she had to really work hard to get 2 rotations in. It just didn’t look that clean.

    • JAS4 Says:

I thought Laurie was a little over scored in general but not too bad. I think she finished in the right place in the rankings. I thought Maggie’s bars on night one were underscored compared to what others were getting. I wonder if Marta personally likes Maggie but Penny has ordered that Gabby be on the team no matter what.

  55. dianajc99 Says:

Thinking it out logically for max amount of medals the team would be
    simone,aly,makayla,kocian and locklear

    • dianajc99 Says:

Not the team I would want but I would understand.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I have to disagree on Skinner, but agree with your other picks.

Laurie might have a shot at beam, if Aly or Simone falter in Quals.

It’s not the team I would pick either.

If it were up to me, I’d pick:

      Simone, Aly, Laurie, Maggie, Locklear

      • dianajc99 Says:

the only reason I said skinner is because of the 2 vaults. 2nd vault medal

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I know. But you think she has a chance at a vault medal? Simone is “iffy” for a gold because there’s that Korean girl (with ugly form but somehow manages to get high scores) and the German girl (Steinbruger?) and Paseka.

Basically I’m thinking Skinner would be lucky to even get a bronze, so why take her. Her shot at getting a vault medal is not much higher than Ashton or Kocian getting a bars medal with the competition.

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong though. I’m not as up to snuff on the vault scenario.

      • dianajc99 Says:

For that bronze.. we like medals in this country.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah but I’m not sure Skinner “could” get that bronze…super iffy even that Simone will get gold for that one. I hear that vault is super competitive this year internationally.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I don’t think Skinner has a chance of vault medal. She has form problems and there is a lot of competition this year. She has an Amanar and a Cheng (6.3 and 6.4). Those are the same vaults that have two specialists, gold and silver in the world championships last year, Paseka and Hong Un Jong, who usually have much better form than Skinner. Steingruber usually competes a 6.2 and 5.8 vaults, but she is presenting her own vault at the Olympics (in the released videos it looks very well and she seems to have it mastered) of probably 6.7 or even 6.9. Then we have Dipa Karamark, who had a Produnova that can actually land (very low, but she lands it and it gets credited) for a 7.0. And we don’t really know if China is going to have possibilities here. Their “specialist” in this regard is Yuan Xiaoyang and she has a 6.2 and a 5.8, so if she doesn’t upgrade, I don’t think she is a menace. So if Simone’s medal isn’t guaranteed (if Giulia gets her upgrades, Dipa actually lands her Produnova and both Paseka and Hong, with the same vaults as Simone, have a flawless competition, she could even end fifth), Skinner doesn’t stand a chance. Barring injuries and falls, of course.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Every vaulted but Simone has shitty form Skimmers vaults are no worse

  56. sanitynmotion Says:

Did you guys see in the commercial how Gabby was being marketed as a 2-time Olympian? Already?! I mean, c’mon way to jump the gun. So we all know it’s in the works.

  57. gymmom2 Says:

Well if you are paying Gabby for endorsements and you are watching her compete, you might as well do some assumptive advertising. Both promotes your investment and hedges against her failure to thrive. Also a subtle reminder to her that her endorsement is only as good as the most recent Olympics cycle, so she better step it up.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

But what if Gabby has a bad outing again and Maggie outplaces, has near 15 bars and amanar. How will Marta justify taking Gabby?

I know Steve wants Gabby for the money but I think there is only so much he can do. With Maroney, you could make a semi-reasonable public case for taking her–Gabby’s situation is different.

We know this but the casual 4 year fan (the advertisers and the parents of kids who put their kids into gymnastics after each Olympics) assumes top scores are how the team is chosen. I’m not sure Marta is going to want to do something that drastically challenges that belief. It wouldn’t be good for business long term.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Gabby seems like depressed or something. Emotionally uncharged…didn’t even look like she was attempting to fake-like other people. Anyone else get that impression?

Even the commentators said she looked “stoic.”

I guess I wonder why people would want to endorse her at this point. The spotlight should just be on Simone.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

To me she looked annoyed she wasn’t hitting her routines especially her upgrades.

      • Tortuga Says:

I think she’s feeling the pressure of needing to upgrade, Laurie is coming out and hitting everything, Aly is peaking at the right time (if she keeps this up) and GD knows she’s in jeopardy of not competing all around in quals/ making the AA final. And can I just say I hate when gymnasts try to connect a back tuck at the end of a tumbling pass? It never looks truly rebounded. Wish we could bring back the layout step out, looks so much more artistic.

      • gymnerd Says:

I noticed she had both ankles heavily taped. Girl might be in more pain than she’s letting on. I’d be worried too.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

I agree with Tortuga in that I think she’s feeling the pressure to upgrade/get an AA spot at the Olympics. She’s going to Rio unless she gets hurt or falls 3 times on every apparatus at trials. The thing about Gabby is that the only individual medal potential that she has in AA. The three above her (Simone, Aly, Laurie) are a threat to win AA and individual EF medals.

She’s talked in interviews about how she is confident she can achieve more this time around and there is no doubt that that will not happen. If she is gifted an AA spot, her medal will not be gold, and I think Nationals has been a big wake up call that unless she continues to upgrade and improve, she’s just going to end up being the person on the team who could have literally been replaced by 4 or 5 different gymnasts and it would have made zero impact on the US’s chances to win gold.

      • Beth Tennant Brigham Says:

After her messy bars, GD looked pissed on beam and did a great job (comparatively speaking to previous performances in this meet.) Next, after she nearly broke her neck trying to land the back tuck at the end of her second floor pass, I was watching her face before her vault. She just looked DONE with all of this. The fleeting thought came to me, “This is where she fakes an injury to save face and ends her attempts to make the Rio team.” Didn’t happen, and I’m glad. I bear her no ill will. She has amazing talent. But with her attitude, her sullen face, her refusal to interact with others, her half-ass work ethic and the heavily taped ankles, something is wonky with that girl. Don’t know if it’s more serious injuries than anyone knows, if it’s family issues, if it’s entitlement and poor pretty princess syndrome, money problems – but something in that milk ain’t clean.

    • Beth Tennant Brigham Says:

I like your comment about assumptive advertising, gymmom2. I noticed Gabby is the lead-in personality in the TV ad promoting their gymnastics tour after the Olympic games, and she also ends the spot by saying, “Come see me on tour after the Olympic Games.” They’ve invested a lot in seeing her go, plus they can tout the great “competition” between GD and Simone (eyeroll.)

  58. Gymnast41 Says:

“Yeah, it’s kind of my history to come from the bottom to the top. I’m used to it,” Douglas said. “I’m kind of liking it. It just gives me déjà vu of 2012. It’s gonna be good and I’m just really excited about the journey ahead.”

So you just slept-walked through nats so you could show people you’re still the gabby of 2012? Is that what you’re saying? You are asking for doubters?

“She always peaks a little bit late,” Karolyi said. “Sometimes it makes me nervous. But then she is able to perform at the most important moment.”

And with this comment, we have confirmation that she isn’t going anywhere. Marta even knows gabby cares only when she has to.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

We all know they are not leaving Gabby at home. Even if she biffs Trials and gets 6th or 7th place they are taking her and using this exact excuse.

Anyone who follows this sport knows Gabby’s inclusion is all for money. She’s basically a sub-par bar’s specialist because she can’t be used anywhere else.

I can’t see how Gabby will “peak” in 2 weeks from her lackluster performances in nationals. Even in nationals before London she was closing in on Jordyn, 2nd place – I looked it up she was like 2-tenths of a point behind Jordyn, and then at Trials she “beat” Jordyn (in quotes because she was overscored).

  59. gymnerd Says:

I hesitate to post this after reading the Skinner discussion above, but what would everyone think of this team:
Biles (AA), Raisman (AA), Hernandez (AA), Skinner (VT/FX), Kocian (UB/BB)?

Solves the AA problem quite nicely (and I don’t even care much for Hernandez) and evens out that last spot?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

That’s the team I would take

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        I’d rather have a team with Skinner/without Gabby than with Gabby/without Skinner…

        but that’s not gonna happen.

However there’s a huge AA problem on bars, if Marta can only compete 4 people in Quals:

You have Simone, Gabby, and the bars specialist…who’s getting screwed to do AA here? Aly or Laurie? That’s what it comes down to, if Gabby is on this team.

        Here are the scenarios:

        1. Marta will do away with the bars specialist

        2. Marta will do away with Gabby

        3. Marta will screw over Aly or Laurie (probably Aly)

    • Tortuga Says:

I don’t care for Skinner’s style. If Maggie is back on vault floor she could be on the team and compete the same two events with a higher floor score and similar vault score. Skinner’s chances of medaling on vault are really really slim so I don’t think it’s worth it to bring her based on medal potential.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree there, but Skinner/no Gabby might be better for the team in terms of vaults (don’t have to use Aly’s – and go with Skinner’s Cheng, not amanar in finals/quals).

The only BIG problem with this team is that it forces Biles to do bars in both quals and finals. I heard Biles was looking pretty tired day 2 at nationals…

      • Tortuga Says:

I just don’t see Martha bringing Skinner over Gabby, especially after the beam meltdown. ANd I agree Simone will need a break in TF and Aly shouldn’t be used on bars either. That’s where Maddie/ Locklear and GD (The only place she fits in on TF) are actually quite beneficial. But I still feel like we can get the job done with all the all around depth.

    • dianajc99 Says:

It’s the most logical max medal potential. i would rather have smith and nichols over skinner and kocian but thats just personal preference.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

I would personally pick Maggie over Skinner but in terms of individual medals, I agree that this team does make the most sense. The US is going to win gold so they’re in a situation where they could afford to NOT bring their highest scoring team and still decimate the competition.

Unfortunately, this team won’t happen. Gabby will be on the team and Skinner will be fighting for an alternate spot, at best.

  60. dianajc99 Says:

England is going to crap this week. I’m praying for fragapane and the downie sisters.

  61. tennisgrl456 Says:

This is from a USA Today article:

“ ‘For (Kocian), that’s very important. Because on the bars, both of the girls are about the same,’ Karolyi said. ‘How you can separate them is by the fact Madison has the other events, also.’

Now, things can change of course. A bad meet at trials, and Karolyi might whip out one of the many other possible rosters that she’s drawn up.

But this is the lineup — Biles, Raisman, Douglas, Hernandez and Kocian — she had in her mind, and it didn’t disappoint.

‘Pretty much,’ Karolyi said. ‘I would be happy with this team.’ ”

So Marta confirms that Biles, Raisman, Douglas, Hernandez and Kocian were the 5 girls she had in mind. As much of a Maggie fan as I am, I think this will be the team unless Kocian breaks. If Kocian is unable to compete for some reason, I think Maggie will be next in line. Even though Locklear might seem like a logical substitute in the case of injury, I just really can’t see her making a 5 person team when she physically cannot do 2 events.

    • tennisgrl456 Says:

Sorry- Didn’t see that someone had already posted this.

If this does end up being the team and Simone, Aly, and Laurie end up proving themselves worthy of the (presumably) 3 AA spots in qualifications, Gabby will be left off of bars (essentially what they did with Maggie last year- have her compete in TF in and not QF) bc the whole reason Madison makes the team is bc of UB.

UB would be Gabby’s only shot at POSSIBLY making a final if she is not given one of the AA spots in QF, yet if this is the team, there would be no room for her on bars in qualifying.

    • H Says:

Maybe it is because am not a native english speaker, but “pretty much” doesn’t sound like Marta’s optimal team.:

      – But this is the lineup — Biles, Raisman, Douglas, Hernandez and Kocian — she had in her mind, and it didn’t disappoint.

‘Pretty much,’ Karolyi said. ‘I would be happy with this team.’ ”

The tumblr group (I think it is @getagripgym…) who have crunched numbers are promoting a team with Simone, Aly, Gabby, Laurie and Maggie as the most optimal and well rounded team (184.308 – in second place by points). The highest scoring team was: Biles, Raisman, Hernandez, Nichols, #Mashton = 184.700

      • H Says:

and it continues: 1. Biles, Raisman, Hernandez, Nichols, #Mashton = 184.700
        2. Biles, Raisman, Hernandez, Douglas, Nichols = 184.308*
        3. Biles, Raisman, Hernandez, Douglas, #Mashton = 184.308
        4. Biles, Raisman, Nichols, Douglas, Kocian = 184.141
        5. Biles, Raisman, Hernandez, Douglas, Baumann = 184.058
        6. Biles, Nichols, Hernandez, Douglas, #Mashton = 183.466
*perfect team based on weighted ranking points system

(I think it originally stems from Lauren Hopkins and or Bekah @GetAGripGym)

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Haha…I read that post on tumblr a few days ago and it made me very happy. I would LOVE for Maggie to be on the team. It’s just kind of sad that one of the reasons that I could see Maggie making them team over Madison is that it benefits Gabby. If they have Maggie, they can leave her off bars in QF and then put her up in TF. That way even if GD doesn’t do AA she’ll at least have one shot to make an EF

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That’s the team I’d go with – although, I know we have yet to see Maggie’s vault or floor. A lot will tell from that.

BUT for some reason Marta will waste 2 spots on “bar specialists” – Mashton (funny) and Gabby, because that’s what essentially Gabby’s role will be, unless Marta dicks someone else over so Gabby can compete for the AA at Quals.

  62. Cupquaked Says:

Currently watching the international feed on YouTube and I think I’m at the almost end of the 2nd rotation, they just showed GD for the first time and I honestly forgot for a bit that she was even competing. I love not having to listen to the commentators.

  63. Beth Tennant Brigham Says:

NY Times interview right before this meet:

Exec summary: The fame is her favorite part. Sad. Very sad.

    • Guest Says:

That’s why she is getting the mental problem because she is no longer fit as herself 4 years ago, Simone is grabbing all the fame even more than she had and she would probably be nobody after Rio.

  64. JAS4 Says:

If Gabby isn’t doing any better by trials I wouldn’t be surprised if she only AA competes UB/BB because of “injury”. If Maggie is able to beat Gabby in AA then I could see Gabby being taken as a UB specialist due to ” injury “. If Marta does take her current team then some will probably be told they can’t compete AA so that Gabby can or Gabby will be “injured” and can only compete UB or UB/BB and leave Kocian to do VT/FX/BB in prelims which would take out an AAer.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Either way if the team has Gabby PLUS a bar specialist, someone will be kept out of the AA comp that deserves to at least go for it (Aly or Laurie)…unless they don’t use Gabby in Quals for UB, which I don’t see happening.

Marta has to know this. I will be PISSED if she takes Aly off of bars in Quals (sacrificing her ability to go for AA) just so that Gabby can pretend like she matters on this team.

  65. dianajc99 Says:

Wow the CAN national champ score a zero on VT on day ! of trials.

I just remember that this week is the Russian Cup, one of the last steps until Russia will name their official team to Rio. As Komova is officially out and they don’t know if Afan will be ready, there are still one-two spots to decide, so it could be interesting to see who hits in this competition. Also, remember that this weekend is also the Romanian Nationals, with Iordache scheduled to compete AA. It expected that the Federation will decide who go to Rio (Iordache or Cata) after this competition based on its results. Pretty exciting weekend overall!

  69. JAS4 Says:

I watched the documentary on the ranch. It mostly focused on Simone, Gabby, Aly, Laurie, Reagan, and Maggie. I thought it was odd that when they focused on KZB and Reagan there was no mention of Key unless they edited it out when she withdrew. There also wasn’t any focus on Kocian or Ashton.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I hope (this is going to sound mean) that the US doesn’t bother with a bars specialist. None of them are going to medal and we already have Gabby going just for bars. Take Laurie and Maggie and Gabby and we got a solid bars team (solid enough) right there as well as 3 amanars. Then in Quals Simone, Aly, Gabby, and Laurie can go for the AA (or Maggie, but I doubt Maggie will get that opportunity at all).

Does anyone know much about Maggie’s condition? I.e., is she going to be doing an amanar at Trials? If she isn’t then I guess we have to have the stupid bars specialist on the team…even though Gabby is posing as one already.

      • Tortuga Says:

I’m trying to just prepare myself for a team of Simone, Aly, Laurie, Gabby and Madison but i’d really like Maggie to get the chance instead of Madison if she fully back at trials.

There’s a video on youtube of Maggie’s amanar from June 20th. Looks the same as before the injury really. But I thought she looked great in podium training then had a lot of mistakes both days.

This stinks, In 2012 I had the exact team nailed down in my head and that’s who I wanted the whole time. This time I really wanted Maggie to get redemption from getting screwed at worlds and it’s not looking promising.

    • H Says:

The reason for the focus in The Ranch – I think Marta’s optimal team is/was including Maggie (and Laurie is the 2016 “surprise”.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah, Laurie is looking really good.
I still think having Maggie and another amanar would be better for the team than having Kocian and just one usable bar routine.
Maggie can fill in anywhere, and Kocian you’d only really want to rely on her bars. And her bars aren’t going to get a medal. Neither are Gabby’s.

The situation sucks. If we could go back to a 6-member team I definitely think Maggie would be on it.

The Moceanu article I read and is hilarious and I didn’t see the Gabby article someone told me it existed but I can’t se to find it.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

So ironic. I was looking for the Maggie video of her doing an amanar recently (was unsuccessful, does anyone have a link to it?) and came across Gabby doing her DTY at nationals.
Most of the comments were negative regarding her worse gymnastics and the fact she’s not even that great at bars anymore. Plus scowling all the time. I was shocked.
I think people are starting to get “clued in” to Gabby. She’s not doing herself any favors by being so “stoic” (as stupid Tim Daggett describes) or as what I would call “bitchy.”

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She sees the girls really training passing her by so she really has nothing to be happy about per say and I’m not sure she should be smiling when she did as badly as she did but she still got many gifts for her piss poor gymnastics and if judges continue this at the Olympics she still wins.

      • Gymnast41 Says:

The negative criticism for her is literally everywhere, Twitter, Facebook, comments on articles etc, and the every four year fans are the ones truly doubting her and calling her off the team. Ironically it’s the most dedicated fans to gymnastics that are rooting for her at this point. But what really matters is the majority of public approval, and if the majority doesn’t approve of her gymnastics anymore then that’s great. It’s time for others like Simone Laurie and Aly to shine in the light of those who don’t really watch this sport. It really got annoying when I kept hearing that “she’ll give Simone a run for her money!” and now it’s “Gabby can’t even come close”

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Every 4 year fans dont understand the sport. I have been having let’s call them conversations with people for weeks and I am thinking of writing a blog about it because these people are too stupid for words. • Exgymgurl Says:

I’m surprised her agent and her people aren’t calling her out on her crap attitude. They could fix it before the olympics where it’s her megastage. No matter what she does in gymnastics Simone is going to eclipse her. Simone is all over the NBC Rio ads like Gabby never was. She obviously still doesn’t understand where her pay checks come from. Corporations aren’t just interested in the achievement, it’s the entire package and the personality. That’s why you’ll see so much more from Simone. Nastia I think realized this after her DWTS fiasco and she’s gotten more real and less stuffy and bitchy. Life is like ability. You can be competitive, driven, and fierce without being a bitch. Shawn and Simone are similar but Simone is just much better. Aly is smart. Aly realized this, and has worked her ass off to be competitive, because if Simone makes a mistake in EF Aly could potentially beat her. Any extra that Aly wins is icing on the cake. She’s a Boston native so she will always be loved like That town loves all its Olympic medalists. Gabby came back for more $$, it’s a job for her and it looks like a job she doesn’t enjoy.

In contrast, Aly came back for more Olympics and because I think she truly loves the sport. Four years ago I thought Aly was the Sam Peszeck of that team, in terms of role and performance, but she proved to be much more, and she’s proving beyond what anyone ever expected. She sets a great example for all the girls with her attitude performances and her work ethic. She’s a great corporate partner. Think about it, it’s her last nationals and she placed the highest she’s ever placed AA. I think Aly missing all EF and AA in Glasgow is the best thing that could have happened to her. She got mad and she trained harder and smarter and it shows.

No on is in the same league as Simone BIles, who honestly has as much endorsement potential as Bruce Jenner did in 1976 as she’s not just the star in gymnastics, but the star of these Olympics. When she does everything she’s capable of she will eclipse what Nadia did in Montreal. Simone is amazing. She just has gotten better and better, she’s changed the sport. Just like Nadia did. She wins AA team gold and two event golds and she’s GOAT no question. I remember her crying at SCAM when she fell on beam and lost. She’s come so far.

As for everyone being out of gas at the end, I’m wondering if Marta didn’t push in practice more then normal to flush out certain peoples lack of conditioning. I think Simone is in great shape but It’s really obvious who isn’t.

      • Ss Says:

        Greatest of All Time
I honestly think a huge difference in attitude has to do with the fact that Gabby is the breadwinner for her whole family, whereas Simone and Aly do NOT support their families.
I’m sure that Gabby coming back was as much because of pressure from her family as anything else. I have been watching her reality tv show and the family is much more likable on there then I ever thought they would be, but it is very clear that their entire world is supported by her. Her mom’s job is Gabby’s manager, Gabby’s sisters are her assistants…their entire world revolves around Gabby’s gymnastics. As an adult with a family I understand the pressure of taking care financially of my family, however I could never imagine learning that lesson at 16.

      • Guest Says:

So I definitely think Gabby will be in hot water after Rio when she retires from elite gymnastics because Simone will probably grab all the fame and endorsement she had 4 years ago. Gabby will no longer make as much income to support her family and I don’t know how they will treat her when the day is coming.

      • gymnerd Says:

        Hopefully Gabby invested well.

    • Melanie Says:

Yikes, the QF so far looks ROUGH for the Russians. Falls all over the place. Seda fell on beam and screwed up bars, Melka fell on bars and beam, Kapitonova was down on bars…Musty just looks tired and out of shape. They’re supposed to cobble a team together by the Olympics?

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Oh Seda. Such talent but breaks my heart each time.

But Nabieva placing higher in AA than Aliya is my favorite. Just take her at this point lol.

      • Melanie Says:

OMG, if Nabieva made this team, it would be my favorite thing ever.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

She’s the one with the stink face, right?

Haha, but I’m sad about Musty. I want Musty to get a bars medal.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

Seems like everybody fell. I still have high hopes for Musty, who had a good competition in the Euros and never does her best in quals. And if Nabieva makes the team after all that Valentina has said about her, it would make me happy. If she has a good floor and Afan can’t compete, it could be a possibility. There is no way they are going to take Seda after Euros.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Russia should forget team finals and take the 5 gymnasts with best chances at individual medals. They Wil be very lucky to win a team medal with their inconsistencies.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

It depends, because if nobody falls, they can pull together a bronze team or even a silver team. GB and China, their maximum rivals, aren’t known for their consistency either. It could be interesting because it could go both ways: they have great competition or they have a meltdown of epic proportions and end up fourth like last year with four or more falls. An interesting final indeed!

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

This is why the discussion over needing 45 bar workers on the US team is stupid to me. Maybe I’m over confident, but the whole thing is dumb in my mind. With the competition field so weak, why do we need to have a bar specialist at this stage in the game? We don’t need them in team final. The ONLY reason in my mind is if we truly think the person will medal in EFs.

With Biles, Aly, and a 3rd all arounder in the mix (my vote is for Maggie or Laurie), the next two spots should be based on medal potential. If Mashton fills that. Great. We do need another bar worker on the team to make up for Aly, but we do NOT NEED a bar specialist just for the sake of one during team finals. 4 AA gymnasts will be fine if we chose to go that route. I’m sick of NBC cramming down our throats that we have to take Mashton. We don’t. We can win the team finals without a bar specialist.

That being said…if you are maximizing your EF medals and you felt Mashton could give you a medal…I could see you taking one of them. But don’t sell it as the team won’t win without them. They will. Sorry. I had to get that out. 😀

For my two cents, I am ALWAYS about maximizing EF medals. So, this would be my team:

        Quals – AA
        Team – AA
        EF – BB, VT, FX

        Quals – AA
        Team – VT, BB, FX
        EFs – BB, FX

        Maggie or Laurie
I want Maggie, but I don’t think she will be ready in time (or she will break again during the 749 camps between trials and Rio). I will put both for either scenario.

        Quals – AA
Team – VT*, UB, BB, FX*

*Note: Only used if scores are higher than Skinner (FX) or Aly (VT) during quals.

        Quals – AA
        Team – UB, BB, FX*

*Note: Only used if scores are higher than Skinner (FX) during quals.

        Quals – BB, UB
        Team – UB
        EF – UB

        Quals – VT, FX
        Team – VT, FX
        EFs – VT

        Reasoning – the 3 AA’ers are self explanatory. 😀

I like Ash better than Madison for some reason. I think her form is better, and I think she is cleaner. Plus, I think Madison will either break or headcase. LOL. PLUS…she isn’t from WOGA. I don’t want to hear Nastia rave over Madison anymore. Her blatant WOGA bias needs to die (and so does she).

Skinner – I know most people hate her, but I’m rooting for this girl. She has an attitude problem, she says stupid shit, and her form is horrid. But…I think she can win a medal on VT. She hasn’t competed both her Amanar and the Cheng in a VT final yet. Her form is just as good as the girl from North Korea and Bee Farm is…so I think she has a chance this time. Why take Gaggy or someone else who is just there for another team medal? Let’s take someone who can actually contend for an EF medal too.

As for NBC and everyone else who claims we need to rest Biles during the AA and not have her do UB…bullshit. I agree we shouldn’t overwork the athletes…so…let’s not send them to Marta’s death camps and overwork them during practices. We don’t need to add another bar worker (and remove Skinner and add Gaggy) just to save Biles from one event that she is good at doing…and does ALL THE TIME. There are other ways to pace and save Biles then adding another bar worker. Not buying it.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

It’s clear that, at this point in time, the team gold medal is USA’s to loose. They could bring any of their top fifteen with Simone, Aly and Laurie to compete and they would still win. I don’t think an UB worker is “needed” per se, because you don’t really need any, but is a criteria like any other to discern who is a more convenient option to go to Rio. The medal potential would be the most important criteria, but I don’t think that either Madison, Ashton or Skinner could have a medal potential in their respective events, even if I think they could get into the final (barring any falls in the quals). I think that the vault final is going to be very interesting this year and, with the same vaults, both Paseka and Un forms are better than Skinner’s, with Simone, Dipa and Steingruber with even better chances than her. So I don’t think that either Maddie nor Skinner can medal in the paper, as we all know that anything could happen in a final. But whoever they take, I don’t think USA chances are diminished or increased in the least. With any of them, USA would have to have two falls or more and the other ones none to loose their gold.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I don’t understand the need for a bars specialist for Team Finals either – ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS ESSENTIALLY GABBY’S ROLE.

I find it funny how even the every 4 year fans are calling Gabby out. I wonder if USAG is aware. It really should be a question of taking Gabby, Ashton, or Kocian for bars.

You use one of them, plus Laurie and either Simone or Maggie, Team USA will still win finals.

I agree with the fact that Simone could easily do all 4 apparatuses in TF…how much “rest” is skipping bars really going to give her?

They had Shawn do all 4 apparatuses in TF in 2008 and Carly do the same in 2004. Gabby did all 4 in London/2012. If Jordyn’s beam didn’t get all botched by her stoopid coach, they would have made her do all 4 as well in TF.

So what gives? Simone’s bars are like top 4/5 in the US…

I think USAG just wants a bar specialist so they can get away with taking one of their favorites (WOGA).

LOL Ponor and Lari are out of Nationals.

  83. Tortuga Says:

And Alyssa Bauman has withdrawn from trials.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

Ok, I revisit my earlier statement. The only way for USA to lost gold is for them to break their gymnasts before the competition even start in death camps. This porcentage of injuries so close to the main event is not normal and unparalleled in other countries.

      • Tortuga Says:

She wasn’t making the team by any means, alternate at best. But it’s very disheartening to see all the talent we’ve lost in the last stretch due to injury.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I understand that Alyssa wasn’t making the team in normal circumnstances. But I find it sad that someone gets so close to a great competition, maybe the biggest one she is capable of, and get out of it because outside reasons before she gets the chance of giving her all, even if she doesn’t come close to winning. But almost every week before Nationals has been news of some gymnast of the top 10-15 getting severily injuried and out of the competition. The number is very high and very worrying. If this progression continues, it’s a matter of time that one of the biggest ones will suffer of the same problem. Injuries are unavoidable in this sport, but this number, in this precise moment and so high in number? That is unparalleled by any other country.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

You’d think Marta would be concerned about these injuries.

Yes, the US could take 3 teams of 5 and take up at least 2 spots on the podium, but we haven’t even entered into the pre-Olympic death camps and the girls are dropping like flies:

Bailey Key – injured (but I think Kim just saw the writing on the wall)

Maggie Nichols – injured (at camp, too) and Team USA could have used her amanar and bars…I still have hopes for her, but her scores at nationals tells me TPTB want to make her alternate, at best

Norah Flatley – she would have made a good beam/bar specialist (assuming Chow upped the ante on her bars)

Alyssa Baumann – at one point I thought she’d be good for beam/floor but now she’s totally out…if she was as good as Kocian on bars, she’d be nearly a shoo-in. But now she’s totally out, which sucks only because I did enjoy watching her beam.

Gabby – heavily bandaged ankles. Hrm.

Laurie Hernandez – she’s got some knee issues they don’t like to talk about, but that can’t be good.

Ashton – knees always bandaged too. at least she only trains 2 apparatuses but still

Madison – this girl is like one competition away from another injury. I don’t know how they’re going to keep her healthy

Marta should really try and not over-train this quad…even though the US is really deep, it seems like even the best of them are not injury prone.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

        Add to that list:

        Aly: both ankles heavily taped
Gabby: her knee was taped at podium training too
Simone: in her own words, “my legs feel dead”

Basically, if Marta injures Simone, Aly or Laurie, I will strangle her.

Well, at least Regan is healthy lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Haha, I couldn’t remember about Aly’s legs but if Simone’s legs feel dead, there ya go.

If Marta loses Simone due to injury, it will be SO bad for her…I never want that for Simone though. However if Marta happened to fail/lose and look like the slave driver she is, so be it. I wish that could happen without anyone getting injured.

Anyways, Ragan is not even likely to make the team let alone an alternate position. Her nationals were sub-par. The only reason she would make it is if there are like 2 or 3 other injuries. I don’t want that to happen, but if it happens then Marta’s at fault.

      • Mim Says:

I’m starting to think Gabby is a genius for half-assing her way through competitions. At least the girl will stay healthy.

I am holding my breath until AA finals in Rio, seriously.

After watching Day 2, I’m kinda back on Team Kocian but how will this girl stay injury free when they are all dropping like flies.

Ragan needs to meditate and do positive visualisation or something. She’s got the talent, just needs the confidence.

    • dianajc99 Says:

where is Alyssa going for NCAA?Did she graduate this year.

    • Mim Says:

Im actually pretty heartbroken for Alyssa. She wasn’t going to make the team, she might have been named as a (non-travelling) alternate, but to lose the chance to finish your career on a higher at arguably one of the toughest gym meets in the world is a real blow. Poor thing.

  84. Rocío Martínez López Says:

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I only laughed once and it was the part about Veronica Mars so I guess my humor is different than yours but I didn’t understand anything being said so maybe I should sit through the actual documentary before I say it isn’t funny. I never got the humor in Spanny ‘ s MIOBI write ups either except the making fun of the Beam that was too wide because I couldn’t bring myself to sit through that horrible show to understand what was going on.

      • G Says:

Yeah it would probably be funnier if you’d seen the documentary.which in itself was humorous for sure. I mean, the robotic way they had to thank Marta, the coaches and national staff after a workout was all sorts of creepy and then how they all ran off afterward!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

So basically, this confirms the Ranch is very cult-ish. And I’m sure Marta will insist USAG continue to use it for their training grounds well after she retires and then dies. Just weird.

TVRsports Romania confirms in their Facebook page and Twitter that Cata will compete this weekend in the Romanian nationals. If she has a good competition (and she is very consistent), she is probably going to be the chosen one to go to Rio. I understand that Lari withdrawal from the competition is circumnstancial, but I don’t see the Romanian Federation sending Lari over Cata when they are not sure of her physical state.

    • Tortuga Says:

I’m pretty sad for Lari, she went through the ringer to try and make it to this Olympics and just did herself way more harm than good. She killed it all quad then lost it all in the last year. The team looks to have angst towards Cata and their coaches, and most of them are broken. I saw an unconfirmed rumor on Tumblr that Cata bullied Ana Porgras till she quit, wonder what the relationship has been like between her and the other girls this past year?

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

It’s not official yet, but I have trouble believing they would send Lari without testing her in competition after a year benched having Cata in good shape. I really think that last year’s Lari would have killed it in Rio, but I don’t think she will go now. Too many problems. I am very sad for her.

I haven’t heard any rumours of Cata having problems with her teammates. I heard she had a lot of problems with Belu and Bitang back after 2004 Olympics. A Spanish journalist, who is the one who always comments ice skating and rhytmic and artistic gymnastics, said that her and some other teammates (Florica Leonida was one of them, but I don’t remember the other one) got out of Deva at night to go partying and got caught. Apparently, Cata, Belu and Bitang had a huge raw and Cata left the team with Florica and others. But I haven’t heard that she had a bad relationship with other gymnasts. I loved Porgras, but Cata was retired when Cata was a professional, wasn’t she? Ana retired in late 2011, right? I remember seeing her in 2009-2010 and rooting for her, loved her beam and floor. In any case, I haven’t heard any rumor and frankly, I don’t think her relationship with her last teammates would be too close. She has been in and out the team continously since 2004 and, in the last years, she is way older than the rest of her teammates, so I don’t think that she has a lot of contact with them to be honest. Maybe with Izbasa, who was the closest to her in age. But I honestly don’t know. There have been a lot of rumors regarding Porgras’ retirement. There was a story about backlash after 2011 Worlds and problems with Belu and Bitang.

  92. gymnast41 Says:

    Lari’s beam
downgraded and not as good as the last two years, but pretty solid for her.

Cata’s beam fell off a double turn, which obviously was a fluke cause everything else was strong

Cata’s floor this was just a hot mess…no comment

Lari’s UB heavily downgraded and her coach helped her out with several skills. I mean, I didn’t expect her bars to be really that great since she got reinjured.

Lari’s floor pretty good up until the last pass. Made me smile 🙂

So far Larisa has exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect her to even have full routines, and the fact that she competed without any major mistakes was a job well done for her. Cata really wasn’t up to par today, but then again she is sick, so that may have been a factor. Larisa currently has an up to her though for this weekend.

    • H Says:

Thanks! It looks like Ponor has upgraded her beam score. If she is able to connect her skills (and adding her full in dismount) her d- score is competitive?

Larissa new new floor chor. seems nice.

    • Melanie Says:

Cata’s floor landings weren’t good, but I was actually impressed by the difficulty of her passes. I love Lari, but she’s got a ways to go. Still, this may be a more interesting fight than we were expecting!

    • dianajc99 Says:

Lari did ok. I really hope she doesn’t get post concussion syndrome.
