My favorite floor routine from the weekend of gymnastics

It’s an Olympic year so of course it’s all about the senior gymnasts . It’s way too early to think of the Olympics 4 years from now when we are one only a few months away from Rio but I found this  impressive routine hidden amongst the juniors that I felt the need to share.

She doesn’t have the difficulty to compete as a senior but Junior All around champion, Elena Eremina  has a beautiful balletic  floor routine with unique choreography that I rather enjoyed. I even liked the “vocals” This was the only routine I watched twice. She isn’t over dramatic which means she has room to improve. Which is a good thing.

I have to say I am really curious as to why you made a hyperlink for “amongst.” Will find out if I did through all the comments on the classic post?

    • Gymbot Says:

Damn I just came back from the last post and realized I am in need of more than just the first grammar lesson

I wanted to use the word and no matter how I spelled it wordpress told me I was spelling it wrong so I looked it up. That is where I found out the word amongst is now considered the “old fashioned” way of saying it and so I decided to link the word in case anyone wanted to nit pick my grammar again. I’ve linked words in the past tho not in a long time so I guess in a short word, I just felt like it:)

My Olympic team I picked for Rio in 2012 was ohashi, Ross, priessman, flatley, Maroney. Four are no longer elite. Norah didn’t compete classics. Go figure. I can’t love the juniors. It’s too painful.

  6. H Says:

GTT didn’t we, way back, make a guessing list for the Rio team?
It would be fun to find that blogpost agin (if I am remembering it correctly)

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t remember. I’ll see if I can find something.

    • H Says:

And if anyone else remember give us a hint:-)

    • dianajc99 Says:

we should do a 2020 one after rio. Although I’m still completely confused as to the team format. 4 plus 2 specialists?

      • H Says:

Yes, thats how I have understood it.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

Yep, but I think the team selection is going to be REALLY interesting. Even though individual gymnasts can earn the two spots at world cup events, the spots are NON-nominative and go to the country that the gymnast represents. So let’s say that Ashton earned a spot at a World Cup event…the spot would be for the USA and whoever the selection committee is can give it to which ever gymnast they choose.

  7. sanitynmotion Says:

I’m trying to think who I would have picked for Rio back in 2012. Definitely not Ross…probably Ohashi.

Did I know about Biles then…?

Probably Ohashi, Ross, Maroney, and two unknowns. Maybe Biles. I remember Biles was up against Ohashi in an American Cup competition and Ohashi won.

Weren’t people going crazy for Bailey too back then? She was the “junior to watch” sort of thing.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I meant to say “definitely not Bross,” not Ross. Ugh.

      I would have picked Ross.

I just realized that Rebecca Bross and Kyla Ross have very similar last names, lol.

    • dianajc99 Says:

Yes Bailey was big on the radar back then. Kind of like Hurd now.
I think Lauries been on the radar for awhile too.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Ohashi won because Simone fell on beam. I was at that meet.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That was during Simone’s “meltdown,” right? I remember not knowing much about Simone and then it was like BAM she dominated. I don’t pay any attention really though to junior until they become seniors. I’m pretty bad at that.

        Who is Hurd?

      • dianajc99 Says:

No the Meltdown was at the classic in 2013.

      • tennisgrl456 Says:

        Morgan Hurd

    • KG Says:

Yes Bailey won like everything in her last year or two as a junior. I thought she was Marta’s super pet, but I guess not?

And I think she was on the junior team super young too.

    • Gymnast41 Says:

Mine was Simone (definitely watched for her after she won classics), Lexie, Kyla, brenna (lol, she quite impressed me back then and thought she’d improve), and katelyn in 2012. Didn’t believe in finnegan’s comeback and thought ever wasn’t going to last all 4 years. In 2013 I discovered Laurie, bailie, and Norah and started to think of replacing Lexie and katelyn. I remember thinking in 2013 that I was waiting for Gabby to retire cause she enjoyed her fame a little too much, and secretly ready for aly and Jordyn to come back and be a threat. I remember in 2014 when gabby announced she was actually training and I thought it was the biggest joke I’ve ever heard, and when she competed at classics last year that’s when I had the biggest “oh crap” moment in a while for gymnastics.

  8. Exgymgurl Says:

I think I had bailie key on my list also :-/. Like I said, junior careers don’t mean much anymore because it’s the mental aspect of senior elite.
    And how much you grow.
And how much you get injured.

    • dianajc99 Says:

I’m sure there some out there that could have gone the distance but didn’t want to go through
      the “monthly inconveniences” of camps.

  9. harts Says:

It looks like Bailie Key was training an Amanar in the NBC special focusing on the Texas Dreams/WOGA girls!!!

    • Melanie Says:

I hope Bailie comes out strong at Nationals.

The reporters do know that Simone is from Texas, right….?

      • harts Says:

I know right?? Of all the Texas gymnasts to focus on, Simone should be the one!

At the end of the NBC segment, the reporters mention that a team of Texas gymnasts could contend for the gold…and they are right! Not that this could realistically be the team, but from Texas you could have: Simone (VT, UB, BB, FX), Bailie (VT, UB, FX), Ragan (BB, FX), Madison (UB), and Alyssa (VT, BB).

      • Cupquaked Says:

To be fair they are strictly talking about North Texas gymnasts from the DFW area (Plano, Dallas, Coppell, etc). Simone is from Spring which is a suburb of Houston. Which is it’s own metroplex (even though “the metroplex” refers to DFW) and considered to be in south Texas.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Does anyone know what’s going on with Bailey? She was doing really well it seemed – yeah, had a growth spurt but still was one of the best on bars and floor in the US, also had a great beam set and a DTY.

Still don’t know why she wasn’t even considered for Worlds last year.

I feel like she’s either being hidden by Kim from Marta (who’s hoping Bailey can repeat another Memmel or something from 2008 and force Marta to take her)…or she had multiple injuries and setbacks that caused her to be unable to compete.

Why didn’t Bailey even compete at Classics?

I just don’t get it. She seemed happy in that video too.

      • G Says:

Her not being chosen for worlds last year was really odd to me and I think Kim Z was pissed about it too. She’s always been scored really well internationally (better than they scored her at nationals for sure) so she would have been an asset. I think after that point she had some sort of injury in winter/spring (stomach muscle tear?) that hung on for awhile. I think she only came to classics to verify her routines because she’d been unable to do so at camp since she was still in the recovery process.

I’m hoping she pulls a Memmel too because she deserves a spot in Rio over certain others. She’s proven to be consistent in the past and she has nice clean routines. If she does indeed compete her amanar at nationals, that will really help her.

Don’t know why Mckayla did that gesture and put it online. She may have freedom to do anything she likes but she should consider the little gymgirls who appreciate her.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      Le sigh.

    • Lithi Says:

That genuinely made me say “Huh?” out loud.

    • Guest Says:

She finally deleted that picture maybe she has read the comments and realized it is not an appropriate acts.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

What gesture did she make because I stopped rising Maroney Internet related stuff 4 years ago.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Flipped the bird…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Thanks amd what was the point of her doing that again ? Isn’t she like 22 now? Time to grow up

      • sanitynmotion Says:

There was no point. There’s no point to any of her pictures. She just wants attention. She needs to grow up but her parents are just allowing her to hang out around the house posting pictures of herself and her butt.
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if a few years from now she opens up about being manically depressed during this time. She needs to do something with herself but no one is pushing her to do anything, and it’s like she has no idea what to do.
It didn’t help that she pushed away any potential opportunities with her risky photos and that whole naked photo leak thing. She just needs to go to college.

      • Gymnast41 Says:

She deleted it too late, now people put the pic all over tumblr…nothing posted on the internet goes away. I was curious to look at her Instagram, and the comments on her pictures are absolutely disgusting, but for some reason I feel like she uses them to dignify herself. I honestly think she used social media as her outlet for self-approval, because since she lost gymnastics, she doesn’t know what to do with herself. After the gymcastic interview and hiatus I truly thought she’d changed just a little bit? I guess not…just absolutely horrified at these comments.

      • Guest Says:

I feel sad for her that she cannot get real fans appreciating her gymnastics much and most of her followers of social media are just looking forward to seeing her show off her boobs or other bootylicious stuff. That’s why social media is powerful ruin people’s mind.

I have thought she could figure out her directions of life when she was silent from Internet over 6 weeks but I may be wrong and she still has long way to go.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Well she doesn’t like chem trails. I think it’s fair.

      • byrdisthewyrd Says:

I agree exgymgurl. I don’t like chem trails and tend to flip them the bird also.

  11. JAS4 Says:

I wonder if Kim is trying to get both Key and Smith on the team by having them complement each other. Key VT/UB and Smith BB/FX. Maybe she is hoping it would improve their chances of making the team by making them complementing specialist like Ross and Maroney because she is possibly afraid they will be lowballed domestically in the AA to make way for Gabby in Rio.

    • dianajc99 Says:

Its a good plan. Id be happy with both on the RIO team

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Only Marta/Penney won’t allow it because Bailey has a high chance (if back to doing full routines at her former difficulty level) of taking away that 2nd AA spot from GD. Especially if Bailey has an amanar.
That’s what I feel like is happening, at least.

If Bailey is “allowed” to come back at 100% and goes to nationals and Trials and nails it – like comes in 2nd behind Simone and beats GD’s bar and beam score and also competes a clean amanar – that I think would be the best thing ever.

      • dianajc99 Says:

God that would be sooo nice.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Not happening. Steve penny wants four professionals on the team. That’s why I think kutcher will make the team and turn pro (she’s already de committed Florida, and has a good specialist shot for 2020). meaning we need a vaulter if Laurie and Maggie can’t amanar. MArta loves vaulters. Unless Key has an amanar that beats skinners. I could see the last spot going to key or skinner if kutcher is on the team. Marta will take 3 amanars, someone with amazing bars, and three AA people. THats the formula. We’re the United States of amanar has everyone forgotten that? yes we lose 0.6 in difficulty in TF from 2012 because it’s devalued, but we still need the 1.5 advantage 3 amanars gives us. DTYs don’t compete with well executed amanars. I don’t think KZB has a clue, she tries to force her old elite moves and routines on all her gymnasts just like daddy woga Bucks had everyone at woga doing nastias bars. At this point the Russians have one competition ready amanar if paseka is healthy. The Chinese? We need the amanars because we don’t have three bar routines in the high 15s. Marta has to win. Although the conundrum is, Marta could take almost any team with Simone and win, so she can afford a favorite or two. Aly is smart to make sure she’s kept competing and pushing her amanar.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

At least two chinese hopefuls have Amanars and it is rumored that Tan Jiaxin is training one too. Probably China would try to take to Rio at least two, but one Amanar for sure. In Russia, depends of the state Komova is in, as she had an Amanar in the past. Afan is always rumored to be training one, but I have never seen her competing it, Melnikova, as far as I know, doesn’t have one and Aliya doesn’t compete her since her ACL tear doing one in 2011. So probably Paseka will be their only one, if Afan doesn’t surprise us all.

And iordache now sounds just like mckayla Maroney…..

  14. Gymnast41 Says: Somehow larisa learned to tumble without putting weight to her hand. Still doesn’t look like much though

    • gymbot Says:

No, It doesn’t look like a lot. No vault = No AA = No shot? I hope she can recover and fight for a spot, but it looks like Ponor is the only viable choice.

The big but/however for me is the long term consequence of sending Ponor. I previously, and in some parts still do, believe that the best in the country should represent the country. In Romania’s case, Ponor is the best shot for medal. How much that medal can fuel Romania’s funding of its gymnastics program is probably debatable.

But I can easily imagine Ponor going to Rio, and as a consequence, the senior team, including Iordace, decides to quit. Romania will have to rebuild from nothing when Ponor retires or takes a break…

For 2016 onward, with the new qualification rules, I can see some gymnasts aiming to make the team based on their world cup performances… But I feel I should already forget the idea that a team of four Romanian all-arounders will make it to Tokyo.

  15. Rocío Martínez López Says:

If you don’T mind the spanish comments, you can see the complete four finals of the European Championships in the web of the Spanish National Channel. Here:

  16. Exgymgurl Says:

I watched Sydney 2000 TF on YouTube, and even in 2000 they spoke of the Romanian bar problem and their low scores there. At some point in the past 16 years…. Get a bars coach and change whatever you are doing. In that same time frame look what China / USA / Great Britain have done. It’s not rocket science and has been a known issue since the year many of these athletes were born.

    • dianajc99 Says:

they really never cared until the scoring system changed. The excuse from Belu was always that they had bad bars when they got to the training center as senior and it was too late to fix.
Witch is true to a point but when you have the problem you hold coaching clinics with the Devo coaches and fix it at the start.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I agree with diana in the fact that they didn’t care until it became a real issue for their chance to get medals. In Sydney they had those problems, they got the same in Athens and still got team gold and several individual golds as well. It was when the system changed when they began to see that a bad bars could take medals away. But they still thought that they could compensate bad scores in UB with a great work on floor, beam and vault. They could do that for a while to reach bronze in Beijing and London, but they have had problems for a while in those apparatus as well. In my opinion, this meltdown could not only be attributed to bars, even when that have been a huge problem for Romania as well, but also to a decline of all aspects of the Romanian traditional gymnastics. They have lost the consistency that made them great in the past, they have presented themselves with seniors who could only do consistently FTY in the era of the Amanars and their beam and floor could not reach the 14.00s range. If they could have improved their bars in the past, I am sure they would have had more medals. I read somewhere that Izbasa had better scores than Aliya in three apparatus, but the difference between their bars where too great to overcome and Aliya won a bronze medal. But they would still be in Rio finals if their problems were only bars. I think that reduce their problems only to bars would hide the whole problem that Romania has, even if I also think that they need desperately to address that issue as soon as possible.

  22. dianajc99 Says:

Random question.. does anybody know what a comaneci on bars is rated in the current code?

    • Gymbot Says:

      It is rated E

    • Exgymgurl Says:

That’s because they discovered through kutcher how to code whore bars with minimal risk so now most of the US bar routines look very similar with lower risk of deduction.

      • Gymbot Says:

The comanici salto and the kip to pirouette (full c and 1.5 d) skills could easily be combined to shaposh elements. The next code may see a revival of these elements now that a shaposh element to kip now results in an empty swing deduction (see Simone’s exercise or Douglas from last year)

      • Gymbot Says:

But yeah exgymgurl is 100% right, usag will only have the athlete do the skills that reap the highest reward, in terms of difficulty building and minimizing risk to the e score, so the conventional routines will remain until the skills get devalued. I’m wondering if they did that to the pak salto that now incurs a deduction if it is not caught close to handstand. We’ll see how many to enforced

P&G Championships start list has been released. Maggie Nichols is scheduled to compete!

    • dianajc99 Says:

y is locklear list for all 4?

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

Yes, but in the webpage it is said that probably some gymnasts won’t do all the apparatus. But she is listed in all of them, as Maggie and Kocian are.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I remember Sacramone answering to this at one point…like she had to “sign up” for all 4 but then scratch out of the 1 or 2 she wasn’t doing. I’m not sure why she had to do it that way. Maybe Ashton is the same way.

      • Gymbot Says:

It’s an old usag rule. The gymnasts have t compete aa so they scratch the events they do not compete and score 0

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Thanks for sharing that – damn, I hope she brings it! In my dreams she does a well-executed amanar as well (no injury).

  24. Exgymgurl Says:

    Peace out Norah 😦

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      Is she not competing?

I guess she’ll be a better candidate for the next Olympics anyways (where are they? Istanbul?)…I mean, Biles will be out of the way (potentially) and Norah still has a lot of development. She’s a beast on beam and I’m not sure what her bars are like but give Chow another quad to get her strength up and power to be a beast on floor too – and maybe vault as well. I mean Chow got Gabby to do an amanar he can likely get Norah to do one too.

      • Tortuga Says:

I can not go through the pain of hoping a senior will stay relevant for a whole next quad. Maybe if she takes a year break like Aly she could but I’m not counting on her sticking around once she graduates.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Ok so what happened to Norah. Injury?

I was hoping she could sneak in as that bar/beam specialist too.

Seems unfair to Chow Gabby left him (he was what made her great), and now she gets to sneak on to the Rio team for what she was in 2012. We all know Chow got her where she needed to be for winning in 2012. Now she’s a shadow of what she once was, is really of no use to Team USA, and yet gets a guaranteed spot because of what she did in 2012.

I mean her vault – useless. Everyone has a DTY and Marta doesn’t need Gabby’s specifically.

Bars – they’re OK. Other Americans have way better. On a 3 up 3 count, Gabby’s bars aren’t needed.

Beam – scary, doubt Marta will use Gabby on beam in 3 up 3 count even though she scores high with “gimmes;” you just can’t count on Gabby on this apparatus.

Floor – useless. Especially since Aly has a better floor than her 2012 Olympic gold routine and Simone’s routine crushes Aly’s.

    • G Says:

😦 I’m at least glad that Key is still in the midst. Even if if is a longshor, she’s one of the few that I really like and can root for.

Hopefully Norah keeps going, it’s such a shame that she’s out though I’ve been a fan of hers for so long,

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Why is she out though?

      • G Says:

I don’t think anyone knows for sure. Lauren from The Gymternet said she guesses Norah may still be having issues from foot surgery she had in March.

You got me all happy with mention of Bailey then she slips off the face of the earth in your scenario by day 2…

I think no matter what they will be sure and place Gabby as close as they can to Simone (#1). Aly won’t be used and the other two top AA spots will probably be a battle between Lauren and Ragan.

I’m still hoping Bailey pulls it out and beats expectations.

      • H Says:

@sanitynmotion, I was thinking it would be a tall order for some of the gymnast to go 8 for 8, thats why Key dropped out from top 6. I hope I am wrong though:-)

    • Gymnast41 Says:

Heard maggie said she isn’t doing AA. I’m going to say that Gabby gets fourth or fifth AA, Laurie gets 2nd or 3rd, Aly gets 2nd or 3rd. Ragan will be in the mix of the AA podium as well, but I can see her main competition being Gabby and Aly. I think we’re going to see some inflated scoring for Laurie to get on that podium….

Beam I think Ragan and Alyssa Baumann if they do what they should do they’d give Aly a run for her money (cause they score higher when they hit).

Bars is exact for me, though Bailie could give Gabby a run for her money.

Floor I want Laurie or Bailie to place third.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Laurie really hasn’t been getting the huge gifts I expected her to get as the new it girl who will carry us into 2017 but she has upgraded beam and bars a bit and that is huge for her but as long as Gabby is getting plus 15 for her piked DTY it’s her spot to keep. Just remember not falling is not hitting. Gabby has stayed on but not once have the judges dinged her either in the US or outside of it so as long as she gets those gifts she is in.

I’m on vacation or I would have posted earlier–just catching up on gym stuff now.

So annoyed that Norah is totally out. I don’t buy the whole foot stuff. She was at the last camp–if she can attend Marta’s full camp, she could certainly do at least 2 events at nationals (bars/beam). I think it’s something else. Perhaps Marta told her she doesn’t have a chance so she decided to not bother.

God, I hope GD burns on beam at Nationals and Bailey rocks it.

I’m curious to see what Maggie does.

  33. Gymnast41 Says:

Just shaking my head and confused at this flogym interview. Bailie basically said that she thought she did pretty good at world selection camp, and both Kim and Chris genuinely thought she should have made the worlds team. When Alyssa and Bailie stayed at camp days after the team was selected, she and Kim said she looked even better than before and made a goal to try to prove that they were wrong in their decision. You could tell that they were watching what they were saying….Bailie also says she’s in the best shape of her life, and she’s definitely not even close to giving up. Which I’m really happy about cause her situation just sucks.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Tells me what I was afraid to know.

Bailey is being set aside for Gabby, because Bailey would otherwise be beating Gabby and I’m sure USAG “has” to have Gabby on the team.

So…not sure what will happen. I expect Bailey’s scores will be very low and Gabby’s will be very high these nationals/Trials. I’m glad Bailey isn’t giving up though.

I hope Gabby messes up and they “have” to award Bailey what she deserves. I don’t see the problem with having Bailey on the team though now with Maggie injured. Plus, Bailey is more usable than Gabby on beam and even bars (did she not beat Gabby in bars at the last nationals?)…and her floor is also very usable.

It looks like Marta is wanting to “Vice” Bailey – I hope Bailey is able to prove herself.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Bailie fell at camp i think on beam and Marta used that as an excuse to leave her home. Marta knows the international judges love Bailie and she can’t have Gabby left at home. We saw it with Maggie at worlds. Sure it sounds all conspiracy theory but why does it continue to happen time and time again ? I d9nt care who makes the team I hope the fall apart at the Olympics and China wins and I don’t care how and I don’t care how bad it s0unds. Marta needs karma to kick her ass and it just needs to happen at her last meet. Sadly karma never gets people like art the more insane dictator you are the more you seek to be loved. Hell it’s Obama all over again lol. The US would have to fall 5 times for China to win and it won’t happen but I hope it does. Penny can’t manipulate the world for this long and not get his eventually.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Have a hard time believing Gabby didn’t mess up at all at this camp. I feel like that’s why it’s all so secretive, because it would expose even more clearly to everyone that Marta cheats and lies to get what she wants.

I’m with you on her “swan song.” It would serve her right if the US got bronze. But we know that won’t happen. And also it would suck for Simone and Aly…

  34. exgymgurl Says:

I think that trials will be Aly Simone Gabby Laurie Ragan Bailie Brenna, Skinner, Kocian, Locklear, Maggie, Baumann, Foberg, Frazier, Nia, Gowey, Meals. The rest of them ( well maybe not Schild) will all be voted off the island and five of those will be your Olympic team. Camp with alternates will be 8 of these 10 people: Aly Simone Gabby Locklear Kocian Skinner, Maggie, Laurie ( Ragan and Bailie are the only other real possibilities for a spot / alternate).

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Is there a camp this year because 8 thought team was being named at Trials

      • G Says:

Yes I’m going to trials and my tickets just came yesterday (!!!) along with them was a paper explaining the event and it said the team would be decided after the final night of competition.

      • Gymbee Says:

Hmmm… how long after the final night of competition is the question :-p

      • G Says:

Lol they mean that same night for sure but who knows how long they’ll deliberate. I’ll have to look up the exact wording when I get home from work.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I figure Marta already knows who her team is, so there won’t be “much” time spent on deliberation. I seriously still hope Bailey wipes the floor with Gabby though. That will make things tougher at least.

      • Ss Says:

I doubt it will take that long. Barring a huge injury I’m sure they already have it narrowed to 7 or so people. After championships they will probably already know regardless of what is done at trials.
There were plenty of bad performances at trials in 2012 and those that were expected still made the team, (aside from Nastia who clearly was NOT in shape enough to compete).

      • dianajc99 Says:

Im pretty sure they have a deal with nbc, that the team must be named before end of the broadcast.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

According to mckayla Maroney if you don’t perform at the preolympic death camp where the real selection takes place they will replace you. I think they will name eight at trials, but five will go maybe not the five who are the team probably one of the alternates. Kocian and locklear especially until the last minute, one is on the team one is an alternate. We won’t know probably until podium training for sure.

      • Short1 Says:

Maybe I’m wrong but I seem to remember reading (maybe it was in Shawn’s book?) that-that was more or less the case back in 2008 too? Even though Shawn and Nastia were named to the Olympic team at Trials, wasn’t there something about their spots not even being a sure thing until after the final selection camp?

      • Tortuga Says:

As you know they announced the whole team at camp in 2004 and only two at trials in 2008 (Nastia and Shawn), the rest were picked at the camp. Even though they basically already knew who they wanted, but they had to see if any of them would break. The team they announced at 2012 trials was the team that went. Yes the team and alternates had to go camp after trials, and they threaten you by saying you can be replaced. But no one has been replaced from a publicly announced team since 2000 (Mogan White).

      • sanitynmotion Says:

What happened to Morgan White? Educate me? I wasn’t paying attention in 2000.

      • Tortuga Says:

@Sanity, she was announced to the team in 2000 then broke her foot a few days after arriving in Sydney and she couldn’t make it through so she had to be replaced with Tasha Schwikert. They apparently cut up her credentials right in front of her and she had to hand over all her warm ups and leos etc (supposedly IOC rules). Larry Nassar, the last team doctor said they really try not replace athletes with alternates because of what she had to go through.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Wow, that’s heartbreaking. It’s not like it was her fault she broke her foot! The IOC should have been sanctioned. Thanks for the story. I hear about her every once in a while but never really knew what happened exactly.

      • G Says:

Poor Morgan White 😦 I remember she had the option of staying in Sydney to watch the games but opted to go home because she was so distraught and couldn’t handle being a spectator. And then she tried to come back that next year and just faded away. I still feel bad for her.

      • dianajc99 Says:

i dont see y she would have to give back all the gear. some of it wasent the olympic team stuff.some was just usa gymnastics national team stuff.

Still a long way from where kim kelly got her credential in 1992.

      • SS Says:

It was all her Olympic credentials, not national stuff. Apparently it is a rule by the IOC that there can only be x amount of credentialed gymnasts at the Olympics so if someone has to be replaced by an alternate then they are completely wiped by the system. Dr. Nassar said in his gymcastic interview what a terrible thing it was with Morgan, which was then confirmed by MLT. (Side note-if you haven’t listened to The Skating Lesson’s interview with Mary Lee Tracy I highly recommend it!) Apparently this is why they try really hard to not replace anyone anymore. McKayla stated that once she got injured they told her that as long as she could do her vaults they’d keep her but if she couldn’t they’d have to use an alternate. With both Sam and Chelsie I believe they essentially did the same thing and told them if they could perform on bars they could keep their spots. Also, it was common knowledge amongst the athletes that Courtney Kupet’s had a hip stress fracture so I would assume something of the same happened with her; although she was only not able to perform beam in TF. Wonder who the casualties will be on this team? I’m guessing Kocian, she constantly looks as though she’ll break (and does frequently).

      • Gymbee Says:

Yes, exgymgurl, I remember Maroney said they’re not “on the team” until they actually march in to compete or something like that, because the feeling is they can get replaced at the death camp and in training at the competition.

  35. Mim Says:

Apparently Komova is done (due to her back pain/injury) and won’t be going to Rio. I’m not that shocked and surprisingly not that disappointed. Girl needs to recuperate.

    • dianajc99 Says:

I’m sad but not shocked about Komova..but since when is Afan going back under the knife?

      • SS Says:

I love Komova’s beauty by I can’t stand her lack of fight. I hate watching her just jump off the beam. I think she’s making the right chicks, though. Her body definitely doesn’t seem to be able to handle the stress of gymnastics since the last Olympics.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

She doesn’t say that she is retiring, but it sounds like retirement to me. She has to be more broken that we know, because Valentina was going to put her in that team if she could remotely do even one useful routine. I hope she recuperates, though.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

Valentina says she’s retiring. So she’s probably done regardless of her own personal thoughts

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I think she is probably retiring, because she hasn’t be able to compete properly since London and she doesn’t seem to be getting better. But not because Valentina says so. She said that Nabieva was retired and she competed in Russia’s Nationals and had a good performance and said that Aliya was done after her ACL tear in 2011 and she had got a lot of medals since then. Never trust Valentina. That said, I do think she is retiring for good.

  36. Gymbee Says:

Louis Smith (GB male gymnast) has come under fire for tweeting a photo of Carly Patterson’s behind from Athens with the caption “my sport has it’s moments”.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

It would be an offhanded funny joke had she not been 16. Since she was 16, it comes off as creepy and just wrong. But also, someone should talk to whoever makes those leos and tell them to give the gymnast more coverage!

As for the sexualization of females and such…doesn’t help when you have those Sports Illustrated photo shoots of female athletes in the nude. I seem to remember ASac doing a split on the beam nude…Aly did one too. I know they try and suggest it’s a means for appreciating the athletic body form, but to me that’s BS. It’s all sexualization, and it’s done because sex sells.

      • dianajc99 Says:

so he wasn’t smart enough to get a pic of and 18+ butt.

      • Gymbee Says:

I agree sanity. And it doesn’t make it ok even if Carly sait it was ok, she was still a minor and that’s not ok.

In a deleted tweet he even said ” I didn’t know she was 16!” if he’s such good friends with her as he claims, simple maths since she’s wearing an Athens number would tell you her age.

      • dianajc99 Says:

I suppose its also i=entirely possible he did not know who it was and just saw a butt. still he should really apologize.

    anybody know who this is?

  38. Gymnast41 Says:

Pretty good interview on Maggie, only really see a dance-through on floor and some training on bars

    • Mim Says:

Thanks for sharing! If you knew nothing about Maggie or gymnastics the interview gave the impression it is almost a given she’s on the Rio team, especially as they probably weren’t allowed to mention her injury. Hopefully her training is going well.

    • katecoursey Says:

This interview made me cringe. To describe someone as “practically a shoo-in” (someone who isn’t Simone Biles, at any rate) just feels like you’re jinxing them…sort of like how everybody kept saying McKayla was a shoo-in for vault gold. But I do hope her training is going well! I wonder if she’ll be able to compete AA at Nationals.

    • Jessica Says:

The Couch Gymnast has a pretty good article speculating who Marta will choose. Maggie isn’t on that team. I’m curious what everyone here thinks about the speculated team.

      • gymbot Says:

At the time this was written, Maggie had recently injured her knee. TCG also assumes that an uneven bars specialist is needed “to keep pace” with China and Russia. I don’t know how true that is – Kocian and Locklear could easily be left at home for another top gymnast like Nichols or Key.

However, barring season ending injuries I think the team they chose is very likely – for the team score/gymnastics reasons, but more so for financial reasons and PR for USAG.

  39. Exgymgurl Says:

Btw gabby has an app complete with gabby mojis. I wonder how much $$ her mom invested to get that made and if Fatalie got the idea from the Kartrashians. here’s a hint. YEs. Fatalie thinks she is Kris Jenner

  40. Rocío Martínez López Says:

It seems that Youna Doufornet has announced her retirement in French Nationals.

    • dianajc99 Says:

a lot of people retired this week. and RIO is broke so this will be interesting come aug.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I suppose that the high rate of retirements are normal, in a way. A lot of gymnasts were trying to get into Rio before choosing another path and, when the Nationals came and they saw they couldn’t compete or didn’t have any opportunity to get into the team, decided to call it quits before the Olympics. And about the venues and the organization, the news about Brazil and the Olympic preparations are increasingly worrying, so I agree it should be interesting.

  41. Rocío Martínez López Says:

About Afan’s surgery: Both she and Valentina says she still has the possibility of competing at Rio, but with an ankle surgery so close to the Olympics, I am not that sure. But if she can do her floor, she is going.

  42. Gymnast41 Says:

Jazzy foberg just withdrew from P&G’s…crazy to think there was so much buzz on her until Laurie came back around, and this is what happens 😦

  43. G Says:

    Key is out too! Crap

    • Cupquaked Says:

If there was anyone who could knock GD off her pedastal, it was Bailie. Thank god for Simone Biles or we would never hear the end of this “comeback”.

  44. Melissa Says:

Where did you see Key is out? I tried finding something and all I could find was when she withdrew in 2014. Blahhh this sucks if it’s true!!

    • Tortuga Says:

Gymcastic facebook has both scratches from Jazzy and Baillie. With links to the tweets from they’re respective gyms. Two scratches in just an hour. Wonder how many others we will see.

I’m not surprised by Baillie since we haven’t see her compete in so long. But I’m honestly glad she’s not putting herself through the pain if she knows she can’t be at her best. It’s hard thinking we won’t even get to see her try but she would’ve had to knock it out of the park to make this team. And I have a feeling alternate was not good enough for her and Kim.

Jazzy was a long shot for an alternate spot and I think she really believed she was in the mix (after placing within a tenth of Laurie last year) for the team till Classics. Better to not go through all that stress mentally and physically if you know you don’t have a shot, especially with injuries.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

      You can see it here:

  45. Melissa Says:

Never mind! I apparently am an idiot!! WAHHH this is sad

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Ugh, no no no no whyyyyyyyyy

I thought Bailey was feeling 100% and at the top of her game? Some article said that. I had HOPES. Why….

I guess Marta told Kim if she wants anyone on the team, all focus must be on Regan, and not the girl who could potentially beat Gabby Douglas.

  46. Exgymgurl Says:

Bailie is much better off healing and going off to Florida with Peyton. Jazzy has an ongoing nagging ankle, Laurie has an injury also that I think will prevent her from being able to accomplish the kind of training and numbers Marta will require

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

USA is having more injuries than I expected. I know that USA has so much depht that it isn’t worrying in terms of team medals, but I was hoping to see more of the promising gymnasts that have been forced to withdrawn due to injury and it seems like Laurie and Maggie won’t be at their peak either. 😦

      • Exgymgurl Says:

But the difference is without Laurie and Maggie we still have five with Aly/ gabby / Simone and (Ashton or Madison) and (skinner or smith). I’m not sure either Laurie or Maggie will hold up. They must have had some kind of secret video check in or milestones to meet before championships. Most other teams would not have that kind of depth. Notice Brenna Dowell is not useable anywhere.

    • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I notice that USA has a lot of depht and even with several top gymnasts withdrawing because of an injury, they are the favourites by far for the gold. But I can’t help but feel kind of bummed because of the high rate of injuries of gymnasts that otherwise would have a shot to the team, even taking into account that Simone/Aly/Gabby are locks. I don’t think Brenna had a chance in this team and I wouldn’t take a bars specialist either (USA can compensate their scores in UB with their powerful floors and vaults by far in my opinion and I would prefer a gymnast that could contribute in other apparatus as well), but I do think that Maggie or Key would have been before Reagan or Skinner by far if they would have been at their peak and I think they would have had more chances of medalling that them in events finals.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        I agree.

The worst thing about these injuries in my opinion is that it’s just setting it up the way Marta wants. She wanted Bailey and Maggie out of the way, and her training methodologies helped to accomplish that. Unfortunately her methodologies have consequences when it comes to the athletes she wants as well…except Gabby, who doesn’t have to train as hard because she’s Gabby.

So now Aly, Gabby, and Simone are locks for sure. Aly’s breathing a huge sigh of relief. Gabby knew she was a lock and doesn’t care and Simone pretends she doesn’t know but she does (she’s humble).

So the other two spots seem to set the stage for a bar specialist and then someone who can help out on beam and floor. Seems like Regan and Madison or Ashton will be filling in those last 2 spots.

I really feel like Marta pressured Kim to sweep Bailey aside and focus on Regan if she wants an athlete in Rio.

      • Tortuga Says:

I wouldn’t go as far as saying Martha is setting this up for Gabby. She has mentioned in multiple interviews she needs to see Gabby work harder. She seems frustrated with her work ethic. I kind of wonder if Martha wants Gabby to break so she doesn’t have to take her? Why else complain about their work ethic if they’re placing well? Gabby is protecting herself and it seems to be working. I’m still upset that all the other potential all arounders got injured and are now at a disadvantage Laurie, Maggie (and Bailie completely out). And Norah would’ve had a great shot too possibly if not for injury. Just seems like the likely team is more broken than it had to be. We won’t be taking everyone at their strongest.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Maybe Marta isn’t setting it up for Gabby specifically, but it really shows that Gabby is the smart one for not “working harder,” since it appears that the really hard workers (minus Aly and Simone) are getting injured to the point where Rio isn’t happening or isn’t likely. Whereas before, a few of these athletes were legitimate contenders.

Gabby isn’t “putting in the work” but she’s smart to do this, because otherwise she risks getting her shot taken away due to injury. She’s going to coast in on her name, she may as well train “just enough” to get her to Rio but not more than that.

Marta’s methodology is to over-train everyone and then take those who happen to not be hurt, or happen to not be hurt so much that they can still perform. It happens every Olympics. The only time anyone will ever call her out on this though is if/when the biggest star of that time gets injured. She’s been lucky that this hasn’t happened.

Courtney Kupets was injured in ’04 but still able to compete – not at the top of her game though. Good thing Patterson peaked when she needed to (and wasn’t injured).

Nastia/Shawn were OK in 2008 and Sloan was able to pull out a DTY vault (probably the biggest reason she made that team). Other than that though Memmel and Peszek were broken. Literally.

Jordyn was broken in 2012 but not broken too much to compete. Same with Maroney. Marta lucked out there.

So here we are in 2016 and we have the 3 “stars” lined up to go to Rio – the only way Marta’s training policies will be questioned, despite all the evidence we all know from the past and despite the fact all of these injuries are preventing potential current gymnasts from going for Rio, … is if any of these 3 get injured too much to compete. I hope that doesn’t happen but if it did happen, I can’t say that it would be a bad thing for the sport if Marta finally gets blamed for it.

The other problem is the US is too deep in talent. Marta doesn’t care to preserve anyone because they can always be replaced.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gabby is doing just enough and I agree with Sanity it was probably the best way to go about it. I also think Penney has more control than we see. Marta doesn’t like gymnasts that don’t play her game her way and yet Gabby had been doing just that. Steve ‘ s job is to make money. Gabby’s name will do that. To hell with being fair. The only thing I blame Marta for is screwing Maggie twice. Maggie does the AA at world’s amd Gabby is literally not a lock for this team. Any US gymnast that does AA wins a medal if they hit. They are pretty much interchangeable. For the last 2 cycles Marta has over scored the exact gymnast that won the AA gold. First Nastia and then Gabby. Will be interesting to see who that it girl is at trials.

      • Rocío Martínez López Says:

I don’t know as much as you guys about USA gymnastics (in Europe, I get more information about Russia and Romania than USA gymnastics) but I would say right now that the team in my opinion would be Simone, Aly, Gabby, Kocian and Reagan, but apart from team gold, just Simone and Aly had realistic expectations to get medals, because I don’t think that neither Gabby or Reagan have realistic possibilities to get a medal and with the chinese, russia and GB gymnasts in the mix, I don’t think Kocian has realistic possibilities either in the UB final. And I do think that with some of the gymnasts that were injuried recently, there will be more chances to get medals aside from Simone and Aly.

      • Mim Says:

Is Bailie actually injured? Or is Kim saving face after being told “yeah, don’t bother” ?? I was so looking forward to her competing this weekend 😥

      • dianajc99 Says:

I question that too. especial because she posted a vid from right after classics and baily looks fine.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’m literally thinking this is so much like Shawn’s “retirement” from coming back in 2012. She was doing great and looking great, reportedly doing well in practices and at camps, tells her fans she’s all excited to compete…

        and then withdraws.

I feel like Kim was given the “reality” speech from Marta and could only save face by doing it this way and blaming injury. She sees that Bailey has college ahead of her at least, so no need to go through the death camps if it’s all for nothing. I just wish Bailey could have competed though. It would have been interesting. I bet she would have been severely underscored so that Gabby would be given the “pass.”

      • sanitynmotion Says:

GTT – this is almost like London (having 3 really good AA’ers be locks for the team at this point) with the exception that 1 of the girls – Simone – is so great that she already has that #1 slot locked in (pretty much). I can’t see them giving Gabby scores high enough to beat Simone – it would be too obvious.

It all comes down now to the #2 AA’er spot, and that can only go to Gabby if Aly messes up (or is not allowed to do bars in quals, which is likely the case and probably a reason Penney or Marta will make sure the US has a bars specialist on the Rio team, even when it’s not necessarily needed). So there we go. I just proved to myself why USAG will make sure the Rio team has a bars specialist.

    • dianajc99 Says:

There is also still worlds next year?

  47. Exgymgurl Says: So from these ten, five on the team, three alternates and someone joining Brenna Dowell as neither alternate nor team member. Three spots on the team essentially named, two up for grabs with three alternate spots.

  48. dianajc99 Says:

So apparently Brazil thought it was a good idea to have a live jaguar at a torch event. And they ended up having to shoot and kill the poor animal.

  49. Ilanchik20 Says:

At this point, my ideal team is Simone, Aly, Gabby, Locklear and Smith. I’m only including Gabby because let’s be real, she is going.

Given that Marta broke Maggie and Laurie at a regular 5 day camp, I don’t see how they’ll survive the Olympic month long camp.

Kocian is broken most of the time anyways. She is too risky to take on a 5 person team.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Kucther is always injured too and she is useless on all events accept one. I can’t believe i am defending

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know, I go back and forth on Kocian vs Locklear too. But they will have a bar specialist to eliminate the possibility that Gabby gets thrown out of the AA. That’s my conspiracy theory.

They will take the bar specialist and therefore have reason to not allow Aly to do bars. Regan will do them over Aly because she’ll get the better score too. Regan or Laurie or whatever. Not Maggie, because Maggie could potentially throw Gabby out too – especially if she does have an amanar.
