Dear Kyla Ross: Updated

(added some blog commentator idea’s at the bottom)

The Gymternet has dug your grave for you Kyla. They say your bars look heavy and labored, your beam is weak and that the younger girls and comeback kids basically have more talent, drive, desire and skill level than you are capable of at this time in your career so it’s time for you to head off to La la land and compete watered down overrated floor routines for Coach Val. You know what I say to that mentality Kyla ? Blah blah blah gymternet. I couldn’t disagree with you more.

You’re Kyla ******* Ross. Two time AA medalist at the World Championships (Gabby and Aly can’t say that) You’re the gymnast everyone counted out last year until you took your 12th ranked difficulty to Worlds and still came away with the bronze medal in the AA. You’re an Olympic gold medalist that made the team 3 years ago by hard work and determination and I believe you can do that again.

You’re a fighter Kyla and it’s time for you to cowboy up. I am not going to baby you here. There is a lot of work you need to put in between now and the Rio Olympics but I don’t doubt for a second you are capable of upgrading and hitting those routines consistently. You just have to believe you can do it like I believe you can.

I am not your coach and can’t tell you what to do but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion so here it goes. Don’t take it personally if you ever read this because no one outside your family wants to see you succeed as much as I do.

A- Talk to a Sports Psychologist. Marta thinks endurance is your issue but I personally think you are talking yourself out of hitting upgrades you aren’t comfortable with so you don’t have to compete them. It’s nice that your coaches let you decide if you are ready to compete your upgrades but this is the second year in a row you have messed up your upgrades and taken them out the next competition. This is not the time to be playing safe. You need to find out why it is you have issues with hitting these upgrades you hit in practice leading up to the competition and I think a sports psychologist can help you with that.

B- Upgrade and follow through with those upgrades. You need at least a 6.6 start value on bars to even be considered for the specialist role at next years Olympics. Kocian has a 6.6 start value and is becoming more and more consistent as she goes along and Ashton Locklear will have at least that when she fully heals from her injury so you have to be consistently hitting a routine equally as difficult if you want to be a member of this team. Find the routine you can work with and ..

C- JUST DO IT. You are capable of hitting these upgrades because I have seen you do it in practice so stop doubting yourself and go out there and push through it.

D,E,F,G and beyond I am not and will never be a code expert so I won’t even begin to try and tell you what you should upgrade with but my one hope is you get a new upgraded dismount off beam. That is your most consistent event and adding a few tenths off an already consistent routine for you would be huge for you when everyone else is throwing the crazy stuff and missing. Code whoring some double turns on floor might also be a good idea because I personally still think with your execution you could be an AA gymnast and even if you are the bars/beam specialist it wouldn’t hurt for you to be usable on floor and vault when your greatest threats for that spot are useless on any event but bars and beam.

Blog member idea’s
From bluejuliej : RAISE THE BAR: It can’t hurt to try and see how it works. There is no reason not to. Adex- Check out some gymnastics moves from taller gymnasts on youtube and see if you can incorporate them into your routines.

Okay that is it I guess but the one thing I hope you realize Kyla is a lot of us believe you can do this but as always the nay sayers are much louder then the positive people. Now go out there and prove me right.

From an unknown website. Don’t know how the hell I came across it. Google is learning my surfing habits. lol.

Coaches Of Kyla Ross Criticized For Mishandling Height Growth Before Worlds And Rio?

  2. G Says:

I love this! I’m going to link to it if that’s ok.

  3. Brittany Says:

I REALLY hope she can pull it together. Would be such a shame to see her work this hard for this long, and not make the next Olympic squad when Aly and Gabby are basically in better shape than she is, and they took all that time off. It would be highly beneficial if she could work with someone that focuses on strength training like Mihai does, but we all know that would never happen. Or maybe her body truly is just done. Who knows but I am for sure on her side!

  4. KG Says:

Love love love this! If there is any gymnast that deserves to succeed, it is Kyla Ross. I kind of felt the same way about Bridget Sloan.

I just hope it’s not injury that’s holding her back.

On a personal note, if my daughter got into gymnastics, Kyla is who I would want her to emulate. My daughter is shy and quiet (at least in front of most people), and I think seeing someone like Kyla go out there and be successful and push through setbacks would be really inspiring to wallflower type girls. There are so many flashy and flamboyant personalities in gymnastics (probably because of the aggressive nature of the sport), which is great, but I love that Kyla seems to be just a bit different.

There is nothing better than seeing a good person who put in all the hard hours, succeed and achieve their goals. I’m really hoping Kyla figures it out!

  5. Adex Says:

She also needs to study. She needs to look at tall gymnasts like Khorkina and learn how they dealt with their own height issues. Then, she should change her approach to gymnastics much like Payson (hear me out,) on Make it or Break it did. Kyla is elegant, yes, but she needs a change of approach. Instead of a double back off beam, perhaps a Gainer with some added twists. Her bars could make use of a Markelov or something along those lines.

She can do it. She knows she can, but I agree, fear is a factor. Not even fear, moreso… Anxiety and hesitance.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I orginally meant to add just this to the letter but I started writing at 11 PM and didn’t get done til 2 am and totally forgot about it after about my 100th re-write. Checking out some skills other tall gymnasts used on bars would be a great idea for Kyla. I meant to include one of UB release skill videos on YouTube to the blog and forgot.

  6. sanitynmotion Says:

I think Kyla has had a wonderful elite career and is not done. However the height thing is scary. This code does not favor the taller ones and Kyla looks to be at least 5’7″. I wouldn’t be surprised if her coaches weren’t experienced enough to handle it right either given their blind trust in Marta and even though they are genuinely nice they just don’t come across as totally saavy.
Her lack of endurance baffles me but again probably is related to her height. Strength training would totally help here. I gotta say I love the post and totally agree. If Kyla is hitting her upgrades in practice consistently then this is a mental thing, period. Meets should be a cakewalk compared to the endurance required during a practice, too. At least that’s how it was in the sports I played.

  7. H Says:

I hope Kyla reads it, she seems needing personal empowerment.
Regarding strength training – her coach told they were already on the case in the last video featuring “Kayla now”.

Here coaches could look to Korkina – her coach and was creative …. And that must still be possible though it is under a different code.

    • KG Says:

Yes she does! Can someone please tweet this to her or something? I don’t really use twitter

      • gymtruthteller Says:

This letter was meant figuratively not literally. Kyla and her coaches don’t need a blogger telling them what to do with their Olympic gold medalist. So no need to tweet her anything. I sure she knows what she is doing.

      • KG Says:

I knew it wasn’t literally. Still I think if I was her, it would be encouraging to see people care.

  8. JK Says:

I think talking to a sports psychologist is a good idea. Obviously talking to Marta isn’t helping.

If she can get at least one of her inbars back as well as those new combos she’s been working on this year (the Chow + Bhardwaj, Maloney + Van Leeuwen), I think she could easily take that specialist role over Kocian and Locklear… only because those two are really 1-event gymnasts and Kyla could contribute to vault and beam…

And speaking of beam… I really hope she can upgrade on this event. A double pike dismount, a full turn with the horizontal leg + full turn, and a switch leap with 1/2 turn – her SV would increase by 0.3. And I think she is capable of competing these upgrades consistently.

Thanks for doing this post, GTT. I hope Kyla comes across this and sees that she has a lot of fans in her corner who have not given up on her.

  9. Case Says:

Very well written, great job GTT!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I still think it could have been a lot better. I literally rewrote this 100 times and still couldn’t get exactly what I wanted from my head to the paper. I have been trying to write this blog for days and every time I came up with an idea I talked myself out of remembering it because I didn’t want to forget what I wanted to write. ( that happens all the time to me. I come up with an idea and by the time I sit down to write I have forgotton all of it ) That back fired big time because I couldn’t come up with anything when I actually say down to write the blog. You would think I get paid to do this for a living with how frustrated I get not getting it right lol

  10. bluejuliej Says:

    Love this! So true!

Also, Kyla, please ask for the higher bars setting that you’re entitled to!

  11. onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

GTT, I think I love you.
Also, this is what I’ve been saying since early ’14.
Kyla, for the love of Pod and Prod, get yourself better in your head and in your body, learn to tune out Marta, and show the world how awesome you can be! And while you’re at it, kick Gabby’s smug ass- YOU’RE the one that has put in all of the work!

BTW, how tall IS Kyla these days? And Maggie Nichols, she seems tall too.

  12. JAS4 Says:

I hope Kyla is able to upgrade more and do them consistently. I still think that a Moors dismount on bars might be something she could try. It’s still rated a d so she wouldn’t lose any start value and it looks like it might be easier for a taller gymnast like Kyla. If she was able to do it well she could possibly even add an extra half twist for more difficulty.

    • ilanchik20 Says:

And if she can add an extra half to a Moors dismount, we could have a Ross element on bars! That would make her the only Fierce 5 to have their own element🙂

  13. Guest Says:

Does anyone know who Anna is?

    • Bess Says:

Poor girl apparently fractured her back and currently has no feeling from the waist down. Looks like she is probably a Level 6 or 7

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That breaks my heart. I hope she gets feeling back. And that shows what kind of a person Shawn is. Doubt Nastia would be out there visiting injured gymnasts who are below the elite level.

  14. ilanchik20 Says:

A little random but Hollie and Mr. Vise (Nadfour right? lol) are having a girl. Beam perfection in the making🙂

In shock! It's a GIRL!!! Team Beam! 💗🎀💗🎀

Tasha Schwikert is also pregnant and so is Jalynne Dantzscher.

    • Tortuga Says:

I didn’t even know she was pregnant! This is such great news!! She got pregnant quick!! Honey moon baby? Has anyone done the math yet? Sorry.. I’m really excited!!😀

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Apparently according to a tweet or Facebook message by Alex it was a honeymoon baby.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

It really doesn’t matter either way. But they got married 17 weeks ago (According to the timestap on his IG). She is got to be 17-18 (maybe 20) weeks preggo because that’s when she’d have an ultrasound to determine sex of the baby and she is due Feb 14 (according to her IG). It’s kind of close to be a honeymoon baby but I guess it’s possible lol.

        Either way, yay!!!!!!!

      • Tortuga Says:

I just found it interesting. Either way it was close enough. It definitely wasn’t a shot gun wedding. I can’t wait to see if she makes it to elite. If she has her mother’s form and makes an Olympic team I will finally have closure after 2004.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

Agreed. I’m still bitter when Hollie with her georgeous didn’t make it to Olympics!!!

Her daughter would be born in 2016, which means she would then be
senior elite in 2032 (if age rules remain the same)”, just in time for 2032 Olympics!!! I’m so on board for this!!!! #prettyplz

    • Aerial Says:

I love that you guys are thinking about this baby’s potential Olympics. Then I realized I’m on board too. I LOVED Hollie – she was such a unique and gorgeous performer. I can’t imagine life come the 2030s (that sounds so crazy!) but I’d be cheering for her. And yes, she did get pregnant asap.

    • Aerial Says:

And Jalynne is running a baby factory. Will this be 3 under 3?? Holy.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I think they are trying for a boy. Their daughters are gorgeous. Plus they win the world series every time she has a kid

  15. Gymnast41 Says:

Thank God you wrote this letter. Gave me something to pray about today🙂. Last night I rewatched classics and finally saw the nbc broadcast of championships, and legit got pissed at Tim and nastia’s comments. I mean SERIOUSLY? Couldn’t they at LEAST cheer her on through her struggle instead of bringing up her downfall every move she makes? But anyways, broke my heart seeing Marta’s face after bars, and teared up after her beam cause it was perf. I’m so proud of this girl cause she’s a fighter who I know won’t give up.

    • laura Says:

Agreed, they should be more supportive and cheer her on. It’s difficult, but I can’t imagine Nastia being fair especially considering that she had wanted the spot that Kyla received in 2012, but it was earned…she was more consistent and Nastia was not prepared.

  16. gymbot Says:

GTT, Kyla will put the work in. I think she’ll even make this worlds, with only her upgrades on bars.

    Beam we’ll have to wait.

I hope she reads your letter, it’s always nice to hear from supporters. The internet is an ugly place in general.

  17. JAS4 Says:

On a happier note-This small child does this crazy skill do well!

  18. Sainabou Nyang Says:

How tall is Sandra Izbasa? She’s always been a tall gymnast yet always excelled on floor.

I’m not a code expert either but I think she should ditch the double front dismount and do a full twist double back.

    • Gymnast41 Says:

      Definitely 5’6-5’7

    • gymbot Says:

sainabou, yes it would be the same difficulty/score.

She switched to the double front because her swings/taps prevented her from getting the height for the DLO. She’d probably have the same problem with the full twisting double back.

I think JAS and ilanchik’s suggestion of trying out the moors dismount would work for Kyla

  19. Mimi Says:

Personally I think Kyla is in a good position. It’s better to be the underdog or have lower expectations than be constantly on top. She’s an exceptionally hard worker and now that she’s essentially full time in the gym without school to worry about, I think she’ll turn it around. She could have had things on her mind during nationals (teen probs, boyfriend probs, whatever) and everyone is entitled to a bad comp provided it isn’t the one that counts. She’ll be right and prove the naysayers wrong, no doubt.

  20. sanitynmotion Says:

On Kyla. I feel I have a bit of her personality (perfectionist, hard worker, wants everything perfect, control freak, etc.) but none of her talent, of course. I feel better knowing that school will be out of her head because that in and of itself causes stress. Now she can focus on one thing, and give it her best shot. She’s been getting used to her taller body but I think with more practice rounds and less on her mind, she can get the hang of it.
A sports psychologist would be good for her, but I get a feeling she wouldn’t go for it.
I don’t get the impression Marta is completely on her side either, but would like to take her ultimately for her lines…I mean you have Aly, Simone, Maggie – not what you would call elegant. Marta needs at least one elegant gymnast on the international scene. I think Kyla fits the bill there, and like someone else said if she ups her D level on bars and beam she can be that specialist, with the ability to give a solid vault and floor routine as well.
Ashton has proven consistency but she’s not a medal contender yet against the Russians and the Chinese, and she’s brittle (gets injured a lot). Same with Kocian. I don’t think Marta likes brittle. Kyla gets minor injuries but is still competition ready at the end of it all (meaning she hasn’t missed any major comps due to injury).
Her nationals meet looked like she was physically tired. It might be she was holding back in practice given minor injury and therefore just wasn’t in shape for that meet. Combine that with new routines and still growing and it’s a mess. Kyla is used to consistency. Not sure why they switched her routine up from night 1 to night 2 but that stuff isn’t going to help her.
At the end of the day this might be a best case scenario because now Kyla knows if she can’t pull off upgrades she’ll be left behind. We all wanted to see her upgrade so now she kind of has to. No other choice. And at least she has a year to do it.

    • Aerial Says:

I’m ok with Kyla reemerging next year and kicking ass. I think she’d really have to be proving readiness and excellence like yesterday to prove she’s the best person for a spot after what she’s shown so far and the work we want her to put in with Rio as the ultimate goal. It’s so exciting to have so many contenders, half of them being from the Fierce Five, and then more to come next year with the top juniors going senior. I wouldn’t want to be picking this team!! So wish there could be 7. Anyway, I won’t be upset if she’s not named. I think it’d actually be for the best for her. And I’m not worried about the US losing. And I know she’ll put the work in.

  21. JAS4 Says:
    • aerial Says:

Exciting!! Buuuuuuut… come on Toronto! Amazing job with the Pan Am Games… I’ve been waiting for this my whole life.

      • Guest Says:

LA again? I doubt the committee will let the same city host the game twice in 40 years.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        So boring.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

…party at my house though, if that happens.🙂

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That sounds like a contract to me. I am totally holding you to it

      • Gymbee Says:

I think IOC is eager for a Western, non-dictatorship city to host, and there aren’t many western world cities willing to do this with the enormous price tag. So LA has a good shot I reckon.

  22. JAS4 Says:
  23. Exgymgurl Says: katelyn ohashi looks so happy

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Not to start a rumor but Kyla Ross sure has been hanging out at UCLA a lot lately. She looks a lot more happy than Katelyn IMO. I wonder if maybe she is thinking going through the hell of another Marta Olympic games isn’t worth the stress.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Maybe i should have said going through the games of another marta Olympics isn’t worth it.

      • gymbot Says:

Not deffering one year would maximize the use of her scholarship, but I’d be sad to see her leave elite. I respect either choice if she’s happy with it.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

Wouldn’t it be too late to start UCLA now? Vut i guess they are on the quarter system, maybe their classes haven’t started yet. Unless she can start in the winter quarter and still compete college in the spring? I’m not really sure how that works.

I don’t think deferring makes her loose a part of scholarship. I think she is entitled to 4 years/seasons, regaedless

Is be happy with either choice. And I’m sure Val could really use this season lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Hrmmm I guesll we’ll know when we know. The UC system starts later, so like mid to late September. I bet Kyla will do well in college but I don’t see her quitting elite just yet.

  24. Exgymgurl Says:

theres a reason I posted that right after pinches medical retirement…. that opens up an early scholarship… and the katelyn looks so happy was actually to get everyone to notice how happy kyla looks. I think shes leaving elite and joining the team in december.

    • ilanchik20 Says:

Pinches retirement won’t affect Kyla. pinches didn’t have an NCAA gym scholarship, hers was an academic one for UK students studying abroad. It was only for 2 years anyways so I’m not surprised she retired.

I’d Kyla decides to go early, I’m sure Val find find her one lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’m sure Val already did – isn’t Kyla going to UCLA on a full ride/gymnastics scholarship?

      • Exgymgurl Says:

youre way smarter than me ilanchick…. yes kyla has a deferred until after 2015 scholarship.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

Her full ride/gym scholarship doesn’t go in effect until next year because she deferred. So unless she can find a diff type of scholarship for this year (maybe Miss Val can) or pay tuition this year, it won’t happen lol.

Miss Val had a few other medical retirements in the last 2 years that may be allow for Kyla to start early (Cassie, Mattie, etc), don’t know if she even at a full load for scholarship among current roster. She always gets so many walk ons lol

But do we know if she ever officially deferred or do we assume she did? Kind of a la Brenna who randomly went Oklahoma when we all thought she defered.

I still doubt Kyla will bow out of Rio race so early. Doesn’t seem like a Kyla thing to do.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

doesnt kyla have more world medals than wieber at this point? if she wanted to hang it up and move on who could blame her? i think missing out on stanford was not good for her. honestly I hope she hangs it up and enters in january.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

That’s a good point. I’m too lazy to count but I’m sure she has more medals than Jordyn (not that it matters). Plus Kyla has two AA medals.

It would make for a very fun NCAA season if Kyla were at UCLA this year.

I guess it might depends on how selection camp goes.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I say no though you do have this scary freaky way of being right but I guess my opinion is that Dear Kyla letter so that’s my point.

  25. ilanchik20 Says:

    Maroney as a blonde.

    • G Says:

I saw that too…she looked so pretty with her natural darker hair. I hate that fake blond look.

    • sportsfan Says:

I think we can safely say that Mckayla has run right off the edge of the cliff mentally, and she’s not coming back to gymnastics. She’s too busy doing this pseudo-philosophical crap. Something is off upstairs, and I’m not referring to the dye job.

    • fatam Says:

Some girls have that face that look natural and goes with all the hair colors Maroney ain’t one of them. Her blonde looks *SO* fake.

    • Melanie Says:

It’s really tragic that in short time, she will not be remembered as one of the best vaulters the world’s ever seen, but instead a mentally unbalanced girl desperate for media attention.

      • JAS4 Says:

I feel bad for her. I wonder if the rumors are true that she is physically unable to do gymnastics anymore. Also maybe her acting career hasn’t taken off the way she was hoping. That would explain why she seems so lost lately. I really think it would be good for her to go to college. Maybe she could go to UCLA or somewhere for acting. Or maybe even coaching some or something to help her move on.

  26. ilanchik20 Says:

I just saw this (not sure if it’s old news), looks like Shawn’s fiancée was cut by the Chiefs.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Do you know how bad a player you must be to be cut by the Kansas City Chiefs .lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Nfl cuts just happened so it’s recent news

    • Guest Says:

It is about a week before. I found someone tweets that he is having tryouts in seahawks.

      • ilanchik20 Says:

I clearly don’t know enough about football but isn’t Seahawks was where Asac’s husband was before he quit NFL and after Chiefs cut him?

Oh I guess Quinn played for Broncos too and St. Louis at some point lol. I think Kayla Williams fiancée is with Seahawks. I can’t remember it all. Football is def not my thing haha.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Their official name this year is second place Seahawks. Please call them by their real name.🙂

      • Exgymgurl Says:

the hawks must need a long snapper…. east got cut early usually that happens as a courtesy to a rookie so they have time to get picked up…Shawn Johnson in Seattle…. thats just wierd

  27. G Says:

People on Simone’s ask account were freaking our because she doesn’t know who Sandra Izbasa is lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Simone is in her own world. She isn’t a gymnastics fan she’s a gymnast. People need to understand the difference. (not you the crazies from the gymternet)

      • G Says:

I know, seriously. I wouldn’t deal with all of the drama that comes with those asks accounts if I were her.

  28. exgymgurl Says:

So some of the comments on Kylas instagram today make it sound like she will be at UCLA in the next few weeks….

    • JAS4 Says:

Maybe she is still trying to make the worlds team but if she doesn’t or is an alternate maybe she is planning on heading to UCLA soon.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Maybe she is taking a few classes to get ahead but I still say it’s suspicious she is hanging out so much at UCLA every weekend

  29. Guest Says:

This website tells Shawn plans her wedding in April next year. 👰

  30. fatam Says:

I wonder what the girl in the white dress is thinking? Tbh I don’t care for any, esp. the one in the gold dress. And someone needs to take Jordyn out shopping.

    • fatam Says:

Hi GTT. Why is my comment awaiting moderation? I thought I was already approved and in da club? Gave the secret middle finger salute to a few people in gymnastics months ago.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You must have used a different IP address or email because this one worked but that
One wants approval. My work week is finally over and I will be updating soon and will look into it.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

If you ad a link it automatically goes to be approved. It’s a wordpress thing

  31. H Says:

Interview with shawn – listen from 5 min

Maybe my english is not good enough but doesn’t she say she went all the way to worlds during her comeback and stopped one week before OG?

Hm… maybe she meant Pan and worlds?

  32. Gymbot Says:

Anne-Sophie Henri channel on YouTube has Romanian routines from the France Romania friendly. Overall they look like they will be a good team come worlds. Bulimar competed her floor on tumble track which looked like fun actually.
