Kyla Ross: Four years later

Finally some upgrades. Lets see if she competes any of them (please oh please have a new beam dismount)
We discussed this on the other blog but I have been working like crazy and haven’t had a chance to post much. I am currently working on the Nastia Wedding blog but have lost motivation.

Emily Gaskins training with Steve Nunno Full Twist Interview.

Bailie Key: Timing is everything Full Twist interview

Who can explain to me why Charlotte Drury is competing at the Pan Am games when she was beaten by 2 people at Nationals? It also looks like Kerber is now second banana to Zeng the new pet. Nice to see USAG screws over all their disciplines.

Did I miss anything else?

Funny how it appears that Kyla and MacKayla have the same chiro…and damn this gives me hope.

  2. Exgymgurl Says:

at least its not the curse of gymnastike

  3. JAS4 Says:

I am glad Kyla is working on upgrades but I will be more excited if she actually competes them. I will be super excited if she competes them and continues to keep them.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Last 2 years she competed them, fell and never competed them again. Even in the video she talks about her coaches not pushing her to compete things she isn’t ready for. Next year that type of attitude is going to knock her off the Olympic team.

She needs at least a 6.6 bar routine this year. She is very consistent which is great but it won’t help her on a 5 member team. The US could take anyone and still win with how inconsistent everyone else is. This team will be more Marta games then any has been before because lets face it Simone and any 5 from Nationals could win gold. It’s all about what Marta wants

      • JAS4 Says:

I agree I think she has to basically be so good that Marta can’t leave her off the team. Kind of like Jordyn in 2012. If she had been able to be beaten by others (not including Gabby at trials with Marta gift scoring) Marta would have had no problem leaving her off the team. (No matter how consistent she was.) If Kyla wants to be on that team she needs consistent upgrades so that Marta will have no choice but to put her on the team.

      • gymbot Says:

You’re right, it’s definitely whoever Marta wants. I think Ross is probably on that list this year and next. If she adds the maloney+bahardwaj to her jeselo routine, she’ll have 6.5. That might be enough to take over any bars specialist that is weak or injury prone. Ilanchik is right though, if she adds her inbar work back she’ll have 6.9. I just don’t really see that happening given her height and her lumbar injury.

Although Marta nixed many of her upgrades, I’m sure she still trains them. They could appear one day: probably next season, as she plans defer school to train full-time for the Olympics.

      • Sainabou Nyang Says:

Agreed. Next years olympic trials will be epic imo. More drama, tears, injuries, stress, and tension than any other olympic trials. Watching it will be nerve racking. This could be Martas last swan song.

For me as long as the Rio team has Simone, Aly, and Kyla I don’t care who else is picked. Kyla has to step it up. She needs to compete her upgrades at classics and trials even if she fucks it up. She needs to get used to competing it at major competitions. She doesnt have the time now to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

As long as they stay healthy IMO Simone, Kyla, Aly and Bailey are your locks (as much as staying healthy and locks can be used a year before the Olympics) which means the US needs an Amanar and a bar worker and floor back up. Beam is set. 2 Amanars and Kyla’s DTY should be enough plus Bailey might have her Amanar which eliminates the need for one. That means a bar worker or a TTY.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

skinner or nichols both have a shot also. i dont think marta will break with her tradition of vaulters over bar workers. I hope 2015 is calmer than 2011 was at nationals.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t care how many camps Nichols wins I don’t see Marta ever taking her. Skinner maybe

      • Exgymgurl Says:

depends. Nichols has an amanar. I could see key staying home depending on how worlds go this year. I could see skinner staying home if she doesnt clean up…

    • Exgymgurl Says:

      the umms are gone

  4. Exgymgurl Says:

you missed publishing all of bailie keys questioms so I can respond as bailie key would an amish west virginia hill billy robot……. please someone do this, I havent tead her answers but im dying to impersonate her

    • Melanie Says:

Haha, there were a lot of questions, but here are most of them. I paraphrased a couple.

      1. What is your goal for 2015 P&Gs?
      2. Will you have any upgrades?
      3. What has been your greatest obstacle this year so far?
      4. How was the change to senior competition?
      5. How would you describe Kim as a coach?
      6. What are some of the reasons you picked University of Florida?
      7. Do you think you will go pro?
      8. Who are some of the gymnasts you look up to?
      9. Where do you find your strongest motivation?

Some of these are almost too easy. If I ever have to hear “I just want to go 4-for-4 and hit all my routines” again, I might throw up. Where is Alicia Sacramone when you need her? At least she had interesting interviews.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

        Robot USAGYM press training answers
        1. my goal for 2015 P&G is to hit four for four both nights and compete with clean consistency and hopefully make the Senior National Team
        2. I’m mostly focused on execution and going out and doing my best at my first senior nationals, I may compete some upgrades but we don’t know yet.
        3. My greatest obstacle this year has just been working on getting everything clean and consistent and doing the best I can every day in training
        4. I knew all the senior girls really well from camps so there is really no change. They are all super sweet and we are all best friends.
        5. Kim is a great coach, shes almost like a second mom she helps me so much and she has helped me come so far and she gives me a lot of confidence to do my best.
        6. They have a great program at Florida and the girls are all so nice and friendly. Plus the weather is great and it is a great program for me.
        7. I’m only focused on making the national team and getting to go to worlds selection camp, so no I want to go to college and look forward to the experience of competing there when my elite career is over.
        8. I look up to Kim because she was a world champion and also Shannon Miller, plus Im really good friends with all the Texas Dreams girls.
        9. My strongest motivation is in my family, they keep me grounded in church and prayer and jesus.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Pretty sure Marta doesn’t teach the gymnasts to use Miller as their idol. It is probably MLR

  5. Exgymgurl Says:

im actually more boring than she is

    • Melanie Says:

Well, except she doesn’t give specifics for her favorite gymnasts. She looks up to “all the US girls.” Come on now.

  6. TrishaG Says:

I was curious about Charlotte Drury so I did a little digging and found the reason. The Pan Am team was decided back in April at a competition that basically acted as the Pan Am trials. Charlotte finished in 1st and automatically qualified. The 2nd place finisher had to be approved by a committee to make the team. Clare Johnson finished 2nd and was approved right away. Clare became National champion in June whereas Charlotte finished 3rd. So one of the ladies that beat Charlotte at Nationals is also on the Pan Am team. The silver medalist at Nationals didn’t do well enough in April to make the Pan Am team, even though she later beat Charlotte.

Kind of weird to decide the team like that. Maybe they wanted the Pan Am team members to concentrate on peaking for the Games rather than for Nationals?

Article on Deanne Soza and the scary eye infection she had. I’m glad she’s recovered because she’s one of my favorite juniors.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I have known about how bad hot tubs are for years. Not sure why no one else is. They say swimming but last I heard it was the hottub.

The entire article is full of wrongs. Aly, Gabby and Kyla train together in Huntsville? I don’t remember Soza consistently scoring high in the junior ranks either

  8. Exgymgurl Says:

huntsville is closer to houston….. like an hour and a half drive

Both of chow’s girls scratched this weekend. Norah for her ankle, and victoria broke her humerus and will be out the entire season.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

Im so sad Norah is not competing. Sigh. Hope she is back for Nstionals!

      #stopwithinjuries

      • Gymnast41 Says:

I’m also sad for Norah! She’s my favorite junior, but I’d rather have her injured now than a year from now

  12. Ilanchik20 Says:

I think Miller is doing some weekly podcast on her web now.

Here is Miller on the changes in gymnastics.

  13. Tortuga Says:

Does anyone know if you can watch the secret classic live online if you don’t have cable? According to universal’s website it looks like you have to verify your satellite or cable subscriber to watch their online content. If so I guess I’m going to have to camp on my moms couch to watch it.

    • H Says:

I hope that is not the case, I think that you didn’t have to verify .. last year.

    • gymbot Says:

Hi – USAG says it will be available online here as well as universal sports:

      http://www.secretclassic.com/live/

Doesn’t mention logging in, hopefully it works.

      • Tortuga Says:

Thanks gymbot! I’m going to try this website but also use exgymgurl’s advice as a back up plan. Should have me covered. I’m so flippin excited to finally get the best part of the season started, but I’m bummed Norah won’t be there. I’m really hoping she’s still going to be at Nationals.

Lol he looks like he hasnt changed a bit.

    • Tortuga Says:

I’m actually really excited about this. Yeah Steve has his crazy moments but he obviously did great things with Shannon. And I love Emily’s style and want her to do really well. Guess she really likes those 96 coaches lol!

      • Aerial Says:

Marta will be mid 70s after Rio. Well due for focusing on llama and turkey feeding with her husband.
When she didn’t attend attend Pan Ams with Rhonda and Steve, I felt the torch was on its way to being passed.
Liukin is the developmental guy, right? Seems that’s a different track but who knows.
Gaskins is so gorgeous. I love her. Shannon had a balletic style too so this could be a good fit. Nunno’s on the brain after starting Shannons new memoir last night.
Classics again will prob be like ranch. Little credible AA results. But I’m excited for it too! Lots of girls we’ve been wondering about both jr and Sr showing where they’re at.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

she didnt attend pan ams in 2011. she attended last yr because it served as a mini pre death camp for worlds. Its actually kind of normal for her. I knew when Rhonda was on the floor in a USA Gymnastics Team jacket along with personal coaches. Kathy Kelly Luann Peszeck and Valeri Liukin (since he stopped personal coaching) dont do that in their roles.

      • mim Says:

I’d love Emily to be that dark horse for Rio no-one expected to be there. She’s gorgeous to watch. I can’t help but adore the gymnasts who can dance properly.

  16. Exgymgurl Says:

    http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2015/07/23/martha-karolyi-gymnastics-retire-olympics-rio-2016/
let the rhonda faehn era begin

  17. gymmom2 Says:

It was my understanding that Valeri gave up personally coaching athletes to lead the developmental program with an eye to taking over for Marta. I see some serious behind the scenes drama as I think Rhonda made that move from Florida with the idea of taking over – but I don’t see Liukin rolling over; and some how neither one seems like a play-well-with-others type for some kind of co-leadership face save.

You will note not one single junior on the list for Classics is from WOGA. Looks like WOGO may have taken their eye off the elite ball and will now have two Olympic cycles with no real players. Of course, that is what you get when you focus all of you energy on 1 gymnast at a time and ignore the rest – if they get injured you’re toast. Although, I would guess if he started personally coaching again he could lure someone to Dallas. There is still some luster attached to that WOGA name, but currently all the new Texas players seem to be coming from down the street at Texas Dreams.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

They need a female to head up the program, and Rhonda Faehn fits that bill, valeri is not as well liked internationally as you might think. I dont think he fits the bill for national team coordinator. plus Rhonda Faehn grew up in the karolyi system, understands how to get the most out of her athletes, and knows how to put together a team. Liukin has never fielded a team or the egos of other people or their coaches or had to worry about lineups. The only successful olympic athlete hes coached is nastia. Plus, its 2015, let a female who is qualified head up USA womens gymnastics. rhonda turned Kytra bridget sloan and bridgey into consistent production gymnasts. Macko was already there.

      • aerial Says:

Rhonda has a storied NCAA coaching career but with one year in this new position under her belt by the time Marta retires, would she really be ready and prepared for that role?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Sorry buy she has 3 titles in COLLEGE gym and she didn’t deserve Any of them
How does that merit running an elite program for the most successful Country in gymnastics the last 10 years? I don’t get it

    • gymmom2 Says:

Just noticed my Freudian typo “WOGO”

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Like whacko . Lol

      • gymmom2 Says:

My thoughts about Faehn exactly. And I don’t remember any of those three being known as inconsistent before college, so I am not sure I am ready to give Rhonda accolades for them being able to hit those watered down NCAA routines. Say what you will about Valeri, he has taken a developmental program that was down to 2 Hopes kids competing at Classics and hardly any juniors bothering to move into the senior ranks and in only a few years has so many good Hopes kids they limit the number who can do the meet at Classics. Not to mention some great kids moving into the Junior ranks. Selecting and grooming talent is what that job is about. The Team coordinator gives comment and advice, but do not confuse that with being their coach. That is why Bela was so bad at that job – he couldn’t not be the coach – and each of those girls on national team has a coach – who is very territorial.

  18. Dee Says:

I think Kyla is going to be on that 2016 team. I have felt that way for a while, I can’t really pinpoint why aside from the fact that I think Marta just really likes her.

Not much else to say, I guess I’ll watch classics or whatever this weekend. Is gabby really competing?

    • mim Says:

There’s so much talk of Marta not being into Kyla (perhaps because Nastia was scarily a possibility for London if she hit) but I kinda got the feeling Marta likes Kyla too. I think she’s being trying to keep Kyla wrapped in cotton wool for past couple of years so she’s healthy for Rio. She’s dependable, and Marta likes dependable.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kyla’s mom said she would pull Kyla from world’s if they took her out of the AA the year they wanted to use McKayla over her that is something Marta will not forget. I still can’t help but feel that someday Marta will use that against her.

      • harts Says:

So I assume this was in 2013…did Marta want to pull Kyla from the AA final to let McKayla compete or did she not want Kyla to compete AA in prelims? If prelims, why would Marta want to put Brenna in over Kyla? I think you’re right, this could totally come back and bite Kyla in the butt.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Steve penny wanted McKayla to do the AA and was pressuring Marta to let her have the spot and he also wanted Kyla out of the AA so McKayla would automatically get to do the AA. They wanted Kyla to do only bars and beam and that is when her mother threatened to pull her out of the competition altogether.

      • Dee Says:

GTT what?! Never heard that about the 2013 AA. That could be used against her, but she’s been world’s since and wasn’t put on pan ams this year so maybe she’s safe from Marta’s wrath LOL

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Alicia made every world’s team too. Marta knows world’s doesn’t matter.

  19. JAS4 Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Marta stays around as an advisor to who ever ends up being the new national team coordinator.

    • Tortuga Says:

I think that’s a good idea. I’m assuming they’re going to still use the ranch as the national team training center so she might as well help who ever takes over transition into that role. I mean she’s still going to be around in some capacity for sure. I always wonder if Bela comes in just to watch the girls practice or if he just tends to the llamas and turkeys now LOL!!!

  20. H Says:

They cut the live stream – seems like Hano was injured?

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

I was watching. It looked like she had a pretty nasty fall on her Tsukahara 1/1 vault. It looked bad but not sure about how bad the injury is.

P.S Aly is looking great. And I was actually pleasantly surprised by Maggie and Polina. All of the sudden the U.S bars are not that bad haha

  21. Gymnast41 Says:

From what I saw at podium training: simone looks amazing as always, beam upgrades looking solid. Kyla looks good on vault, just a bit of form breaks on bars but looks great with the upgrades ;). Aly looks fantastic on pretty much everything, I was surprised with how steady she was on bars. Gabby looks a mess on everything but beam (the irony), I’m pretty sure she will screw up somewhere tmrw. Maggie nichols looks really good especially on bars, the amanar has the height but her twisting reminds me of Musty, and she’s solid on beam. Bailie looks really good everywhere especially on beam ( layout’s gotten better?) and lots of floor upgrades and a new ( quite different) routine. Didn’t really watch skinner or baumann, got a glimpse of Kocian and Locklear. Vega is back, looking okay-ish. Brenna has her crazy bar routine back with a lot of mistakes, but I do see promise 🙂

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

I agree with much of what you said!

Everyone was jumping over joy case Maggie has an Amanar. But that Amanar? Ugh. It’s worse that Aliya’s crossed legs.

And who the hello choreographed Bailies new floor routine? It’s awful.

      Love Aly’s upgraded floor pass!

      • Gymnast41 Says:

I don’t know who in their right minds choreographed gabby or Bailee’s floor routines haha….both uh, interesting.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gabrielle’s is horrible and Bailey’s didn’t go with the music.

  22. H Says:

Anyone having (“easy” at hand) the name of the juniors that are eligible for Rio?

    • harts Says:

Rio eligible juniors: Kaitlin DeGuzman (Metroplex), Christina Desiderio (Parkettes), Jazmyn Foberg (MG Elite), Emily Gaskins (North Port), Laurie Hernandez (MG Elite), Sydney Johnson-Sharpf (Brandy Johnson’s), Maggie Musselman (Hill’s), Abby Paulson (Twin City Twisters), Grace Quinn (Texas Dreams), Ragan Smith (Texas Dreams)

    • harts Says:

And two of the girls who scratched are also eligible: Norah Flatley and Margzetta Frazier

  23. Ilanchik20 Says:

    Aly’s new pass:

I think her floor is up in the 6.7/6.8 range now.

  24. Ilanchik20 Says:

Shawn and Asac were throwing the first pitch. Looks like Shawn’s bf proposed while at the game.

    • Sainabou Nyang Says:

I saw this. Where is gymmom????

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

        Lol

Of course, Shawn would get engaged the weekend of Classics, haha. But I guess I prefer her and Andew over Nastia and Matt so I guess that’s fine lol

I suppose Nastia and Shawn can fight over who can have their wedding during AA Rio lol

      • Guest Says:

I have thought Shawn would announce the engagement during the Rio Olympics, it is quite a sudden.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Just hope she doesn’t try to start a trend of getting married in a flowy top with black leggings and a shirt vest going down to her knees in leopard print.
        WHERE are you Gymmom.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

OH Shawn getting engaged at a Cubs game could only mean divorce before you’re 30. They are jinxed.lol congrats to her. Looks like I need to plan 2 weddings.lmao

    • Lithi Says:

Oooh, I think Shawn knows this would piss off Nastia. Betcha she and her lug will do something even more public PDA or try to take the “high” road and drop passive-aggressive jabs at how low-class and attention-whorey it is to propose in public. This is what Bridezilla was made for, I’ll bring the popcorn. *rubs hands in glee*

      • Dee Says:

I had a feeling when I saw nastia was engaged that Shawn would somehow not be long behind. Same thing will happen when someone gets pregnant, I bet any amount of money.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Shawn didn’t ask herself so this engagement is on the guy

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Yes and shes been dating Andrew for at least 2 probably almost 3 years. Way longer than Nastia has been with Matt Lombardi…. Shawn moved to Tennesee and went to vandy just to be closer to him…. seemed kind of stupid, but she knows what she wants and forever and in life she beat nastia on DWTS and never acted like a brat. She was way better and more fun to watch on DWTS.

  25. Case Says:

This baseball series is lacking its normal luster, isn’t it GTT?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Verlander is having an off year yet the Red Sox weren’t given the memo and he had a no hitter through 3. It sucks that we suck. Sox are like 9 games out of first in our division. Yankees are winning and baseball is losing my interest. SO sad.

      • Case Says:

….And the Tigers made Porcello look like freaking Sandy Koufax out there tonight. It all went to hell for us when Miggy got hurt.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Porcello didn’t suck because it was his ex team. Don’t worry he will fall completely apart the next 200 games.lol

      • Case Says:

We are just terrible. We need to be sellers at the deadline. We have tons of guys that should bring a good return.

  26. gymtruthteller Says:

I will be live blogging classics tomorrow night as long as thwrebis a video feed people but during the day I have a birthday party to go to so I won’t be around for the juniors. Every gym season my life gets hectic so I apologize for lack of blogging.

  27. Melanie Says:

Just watched podium training… Gabby looked really weak on bars. I’ll be surprised if she makes it through a full set. Simone, Aly, and Maggie are all business. I didn’t think Bailie’s layout on beam looked much better. I haven’t decided what I think about her floor yet. Gabby’s is AWFUL. Aly looks even better than London form on floor, but her bars are still pretty terrible.

Most of all, I was appalled by how long Fish Hano was on the mat clearly injured before any one came to check on her. Poor girl.

    • Melanie Says:

Last thoughts: Do all the GAGE girls have the exact same low beam work? Brenna and Sabrina have the exact same choreo as Courtney McCool in 2004. Also I noticed Gabby has stolen old choreo from both Aly and Jordyn’s 2012 routines.

  28. G Says:

At Classics right now. Met Shawn Johnson! She’s here with Asac but she wasn’t into meeting people or signing at that point lol. I think both will be having a more formal autograph session between jrs and sr. Laurie’s got this with Jazzy in second I think.

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

So jealous! The year I don’t go is when Asac shows up. Ahhhh.

How were the juniors? It looked pretty boring from the broadcast.

      • G Says:

Pretty good! There were a lot of falls and near misses but the MG Elite girls looked good. I’m really happy for Laurie after being out for so long. I didn’t feel like waiting in the line for Asac so I settled with just Shawn lol.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Laurie looked awesome in comparison to most other juniors (Reagan Smith and Desiderios floor being an exception) lol.

        Glad it’s better in person!

  29. G Says:

    Ragan second, Jazzy third.

  30. Exgymgurl Says:

so aly warmed up her amanar. She is my official BAMF of this quad… its like she thinks she can beat simone…..and its awesome… and its a dos santos on floor with upgraded bars. Holy mary mother of jesus bat man

    • Exgymgurl Says:

I cant believe Im saying this because in 2011 and in London I would not have but Im so psyched to see Aly raisman compete… and her parents react

    • G Says:

Yeah Aly means business. She was PISSED after floor.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Supposedly Aly and Mihai had a long convo after her floor. From the gossip i heard, he didn’t want her doing that punch out of dos Santos but she did it anyways. I love that upgrade so hope she keeps it!
