Rhonda Faehn to USA-Gym, Simone Biles and more

1:04:30 ish Simone gives her speech. The award went to Ezekiel Elliot.

Rhonda Faehn will be leaving Florida and taking on the role of Senior VP of the women’s program. The internet seems to think this means Rhonda will be taking over Marta’s role when she finally decides to retire and take her commie ways back to Romania ( Hey it could happen if the pay is right) The gymternet also seems to be happy about it thinking she will be great at the role and I am still trying to figure out why people think this will work out?

What does a College coach know about being the head of the entire Elite Gymnastics program? Yes Rhonda made a world team and was the alternate that cost the US a team medal at the 88 Olympics but how does taking a College program and turning it into a winner because the judges were blatantly cheating make her a great candidate to run the US program?

She very well could do a good job but what she has done as a College coach (which is essentially the poor mans 92 gymnastics way of doing things) to merit this blind faith everyone has in her?

The great gymnasts Florida had on their roster were already made in Marta’s system. To me this is just Marta taking one of her ex gymnasts and giving her the key to the city based majorly on her once coaching the gymnast.

Every single one of Florida’s win was undeserved ( Counting a fall, the gift of a tie and Utah was robbed)

    1. Rhonda is good at manipulating judges.
    2. Rhonda is not vested in coaches politics in elite
    3. Rhonda will do whatever the karolyis say

    sounds perfect

    • gymtruthteller Says:

A Karolyi puppet. Now that makes sense

      • Exgymgurl Says:

I think politically also they need a female in charge of womens gymnastics. period. They bring faehn in, mid quad she understands the karolyi system, she will do whatever they say. She sort of experiences this olympic selection process. And then she runs Tokyo or maybe the olympics after. Besides Aly Raisman will now get to be coached by her. The odd thing here is Zmeskal honestly is better qualified to be a karolyi puppet, but doesnt have the experience of managing a team, and a lineup. I wonder if Rhonda will be on the floor in heels and nice clothes like a college coach or in an underarmour track suit.

Im less concerned about Bridget Sloan and the Seniors and the recruits ( who BTW can change their minds) than I am about Alex Mc Murtry and kennedy Baker who like Brandy Jay and Brittany Rogers at Georgia are stuck. One thing about Rhonda is shes a total bitch to her team when she needs to be.

I wonder more how this impacts the older athletes like the Aly Raismans, the Gabby Douglases and Kyla. I wonder if she will be more honest and basically name 16 girls mid quad to get to a team of five because realisticly they should do that and get the girls that arent really going to make it off to college healthy or on a plan to have a shot at being top 16.

Now I wonder who Florida gets as a head coach. I hope its not Jay Clark. His beam lineup at super six was disasterous for LSU as it was at georgia.

  2. Exgymgurl Says:

oh and now shes over luan peszeck. maybe sam doesnt get anymore commenting jobs

    • gymmom2 Says:

Well she was at camp last week and introduced as Luan’s replacement. Rumor has it she also walked around the floor coaching and apparently it was not particularly appreciated. Say what you will about Valeri, but he has coached his fair share of national team members and gymnasts who have medaled on the world stage. And Faehn has taken great gymnast and let them compete lesser routines than they did as elites and is given accolades as a great coach. Great recruiter, good at working the system, but no credentials – IMHO as a great coach. I remember when Bela was National Team Coordinator and tried to coach too much – real push back from the elite coaches and a disastrous showing – and then we got Marta. Did find it interesting that Rhonda made the comment that she would be involved in selecting the Olympic team – which is not part of the old job description for that position. Maybe she is shooting for Steve Penny’s job. Not sure Marta’s job pays enough.

  3. JAS4 Says:

What happened to Valeri being next in line to Marta’s throne? Did he get on her bad side and get banished to Azerbaijan? Lol but if Rhonda will run things exactly how Marta wants then that wouldn’t be surprising either lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Just because the gymternet thinks Rhonda will be the next HBIC doesn’t mean she will be. It still could be my gymnasts can’t vault or dance Liukin

      • JAS4 Says:

Maybe Marta just wants to give Valeri some competition for heir to the throne because she seems to love a good rivalry lol I still wouldn’t be surprised if Nastia ends up with Nellie’s job lol

  4. Case Says:

I wonder what was promised to Rhonda to get her to make that move. Because she had it made at Florida.

I, too, thought Valeri was heir apparent. Now I’m not sure.

  5. Exgymgurl Says:

also, rhonda faehn was a great vaulter and consistently got a 10 on her fty. She follows what Marta likes in a gymnast. Marta likes solid vaulters. Read Chelle Stacks unreleased manuscript about the head games rhonda faehn played with her. She was really too tall to be a successful elite in 1988. All anyone ever said about her was hard work and consistency.

If Im one of the current elites that did a visit to Florida that went horribly wrong, Im nervous at this point.

Hopefully Rhonda will be more honest and up front with the Peyton Ernsts and the sabrina Vegas of the world. Hopefully she will structure skill development and progress so that it is very clear if girls want international assignments what skills they need to add and work consistently. IMHO there are a bunch of seniors the team needs to just dump like Hundley, Vega, Ernst, Hano, polina, they shouldnt even be at camp because we really dont need a DTeam of gymnasts that amount to good level 10s.

I heard at florida she was very clear with people that if they wanted to make lineups what needed to improve. She also didnt hesitate to pull Marissa King out of beam for falling. Honestly if the elites had that kind of clarity around what the expectation was I think the program would be better, and perhaps Al Fong would be less delusional about his gymnasts.

    • Katie Says:

I read chelle’s mom’s manuscript, is that what you mean? I think it may have been posted here a few years back? Anyways, I don’t remember seeing anything about Rhonda. Could you please elaborate?

  6. Exgymgurl Says:

chelle used to ride with rhonda in the car and rhonda always was trying to psych her out

    • Katie Says:

Oh ok yeah I do remember the car pool part.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t remember any of it

      • Exgymgurl Says:

you blogged it. google or search your blog for chelle stack

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I know I blogged it.lol and I just started reading it.

For anyone else here is the link

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Oh and I am reading the comments were Terri who we now know was friends with Chelle talks about how much she liked her as a gymnast but she doesn’t admit she knows her.

I am starting to think maybe Terri was Chelle’s mom. She sure does a lot of defending of her mother.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

I would love to hear candid comments from anyone on what faehn was like in the 88 quad the other comment from chelles mom is rhonda ignored bella and worked at her slow steady pace. and that bela just ignored her. Maybe messing up and getting the deduction was a way of getting their attention, or she has something on the karolyis. her first NCAA championship reeked of a setup. The tie with oklahoma also and now the outright robbing of utah. I think Rhonda faehn knows a lot more about the karolyis than anyone thinks…In 88 judges were looking to payback bella for going out on the floor when mary lou won. after hed been told not to. But also judges hated Bella.

    • Katie Says:

I don’t remember the specifics but I do remember her mom saying that her karolyi teammates picked on her during carpool.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Terri gymfan. What happened to her? She emailed me once. I think you’re right GTT she’s someone more closely related to the sport than we think.

I read that blog but forgot about the carpool parts. I don’t have time to read it again though sadly.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Using your baby ad an excuse to not re-read useless stuff that in reality means nothing. Shame on YOU😉

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know – it’s more my work that prevents it. I have a lot on my plate, and this blog is my relief.

Um, as for the costing the team a medal – totally the coach’s fault! That’s like that one time Hollie Vice’s number fell off her back and they were frantically trying to pin it back on to avoid a penalty.

Technicalities like that though honestly are stupid. Instead of costing points in a competition, it should have been a fine to USA Gymnastics. A girl on the podium does not mean the team deserved fourth place. Good gawd, no wonder these sports are considered a joke.

Something like that happened in football – oh my gosh, we’d never hear the end of it. Like that one time the Steeler’s coach blatantly stood out on the field to try and trip up the guy (on the other team) running with the ball to score. Did the Steeler’s get negative points? No. The dude got fined. That’s how it should be done. For the love of gawd…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The idiot GM of the Celtics s stood on the sidelines taunting a player trying to take a free throw and got nothing. NBA doesn’t care about that stuff

  7. Exgymgurl Says:

she also said bela took faehns invite to scam and gave it to chelle. and that bela would leave the bars at rhondas height rhonda is 5’4″ for chelle at 4’6″ to me the most fascinating quad is the 88 quad because its the quad where we lost a medal in south korea because of rhonda faehn. Its the only team after 84 that didnt get a medal

    • Katie Says:

I don’t really blame Rhonda for that. That was truly a rule that only the head coach would and should know and I think it was Kathy Johnson who said don peters knew every little rule (and no, I am not a don peters fan). But if you are going to be the head coach, that comes with the responsibility of knowing all of those little things. Plus, the German judge Ellen was basically looking for any reason to penalize Bela’s team after Bela’s spectacle at the 84 Olympics. i always thought it was unfair the the karolyis blamed Rhonda.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

No one said she did it on purpose but the fact is she still did it.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

the karolyis consistently always blame others. nothing is ever their fault.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

don peters took doe yashimiro to seoul and roomed with her. Maybe he should have spent less time sexually abusing his gymnast and more time focused on rules.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

What did Rhonda do during the 88 Olympic games?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Stayed on the podium during a routine cost tram 5 tenths and a medal. All Bela’s fault really.

    • Katie Says:

Bela did that or Rick Newman? Now I want to reread that thing!

    • Katie Says:

Yeah but bela had no problem placing the blame for the mistake on her even though a) his responsibility as head coach was to know that she was not allowed on the podium, yet he instructed her to remain there to pull back the springboard and b) he had a target on his back after he brushed off Ellen Berger.
I do think that Rhonda got thrown under the bus by bela for that whole thing.

    • Katie Says:

@exgymgurl- oh I know, I despise don peters! I hate to even bring him up. I only bring him up because Kathy Johnson had given interviews about how bela might have been a terrific inidivual coach but don Johnson was a better head coach because he knew all of the obscure rules that a head coach needed to know.

  8. Katie Says:

Not sure if this has ever been discussed before.

  9. Exgymgurl Says:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/22/sports/utah-gymnastics-coach-greg-marsden-to-retire.html?_r=0 rhonda definitely took the thunder out of this

  10. gymtruthteller Says:

Sorry gymnerd. I went to reply to your comments and deleted them Instead. The boys phones fault.
