RIP Natalia Bobrova

Natalia died from  cancer on April 2nd and all I want to know is why didn’t we know about what she was going through earlier? It probably would have been nice for this girl to know that her gymnastics career meant something to someone before she passed away.

Natalia Bobrova was part of the 93 and 95 Russian gymnastics team and winning the bronze medal on floor in 1993. She was the first Russian to win a World medal after the fall of the Soviet Union and was the only gymnast in the 93 Event Finals floor final to have a ten start value.

The one thing I will always remember about Natalia was her clapping for her competitors after their routines in 1993. The Russians don’t do that for anyone but their teammates or occasionally for a Romanian if they beat an American.

gtt do me a favor and watch moceanu do her optional beam at 1996 nationals, and then katie teft at trials and explain the scoring discrepancy. the routines are so similar in composition, but tefts actually looks harder

Teft was low balled at Trials compared to others. I was sitting to the right of beam. I actually felt back in the day that Strug should have won trials but I don’t think I have sat through any of those routines since I originally saw them that day.

Compulosries judges should have been shot in 96 for the way they scored those routines. If Miller, Podkopayeva and some of the Chinese deserved their scores as they were (imo they were lower than they should be except some of Lilia like on floor and bars ) the crap Dawes put on beam should have been in the 8’s. How did the 96 Olympic judges get those beam scores with all those mistakes?

Moceanu’s beam with her bent knee’s always drove me nuts. The judges were on crack during team finals for her scores and Jackie Fie allowing them to stay scored that way just highlighted more how badly she wanted to screw Miller because of Nunno.

Moceanu and Tef were both short on their leaps and jumps and while Teft landed her punch front low Moceanu had a hop back. Teft’s routine was more difficult. After Moceanu’s 3 lay outs the routine was hollow. Teft had the great mount.

Tragically, she’s the 3rd Russian gymnast/coach to have died in a month, Maria Kryuchkova (2004 Olympian-blood clot) and Aleksandr Pravdin (coach-was recruited by Azerbaijan-heart attack) are gone as well. This is terrible, condolences to their families and the AZE girls.

Why is it that the nice people end up dying from cancer, and the mean people keep living, and living, and living….and NOT RETIRING…

Teft had a much harder floor routine than moceanu also. I don’t get the scoring in 1996 at all that picked the team for Atlanta. It seems totally fixed because Teft was really solid at trials and peaking at the right time. I get that she wasn’t a vaulter but we didn’t need her on vault, and her floor and beam were much harder than Borden or chow. Strug was lowballed also. The whole thing is ridiculous

Struggle wasn’t so much lowballed as Dawes was gifted some huge ridiculous impossible scores.

The handspring to punch front at 30 sec is insane. I can’t figure out how today they are still doing hs layout step out. At least do a three series!

It’s already linked on the blog. That was one of the only times she hit it. She fell at worlds in 93

      • Kirsten Says:

Sorry- just saw the floor ex.

Don’t worry about it. I have an inside joke with myself that no one actually reads the blog and they just come here to socialize with each other in the comments section. Lol

      • Kirsten Says:

I read the blog, I promise:)
I also want the stupid high bar toy but can’t part with the 65 bucks to buy it.
And just so you know where my loyalities are, I watched dice k pitch in the World Series in 07 while having my daughter. Go sox!
