My Jesolo wrap up

Before I start my completely un-professional review of this competition am I the only one that thinks the US sending it’s A team to this Jesolo meet is completely ridiculous? Is there really a need to put Simone Biles up against Canada and Italy’s B team ? Does it some how make Marta feel special because she can beat up on the less fortunate by 17 points? I am sorry it just irks me. Simone should have stayed home from this meet. So should have Kyla actually because the last thing the US needs is either of these gymnasts getting injured for a meet that means jack shit to anyone else in the world but Marta. Aly and Gabrielle needed to prove themselves. Bailie Key needed a first competition as a senior especially after she tanked 2 camps in a row and the Juniors are juniors so let them compete as much as possible but there was not a single reason in the world to send Simone to this meet.

Okay so back to the actual competition.

The Results speak for themselves. AA winner Simone Biles is super human and she out classed every single competitor on every single event at this meet. She had the best 4 routines on all 4 events in the Team/AA competition. She really doesn’t make sense. I know she is power on power but she just doesn’t miss. SUPER HUMAN!

Bailie Key has a pretty good Senior debut finishing 2nd. Kind of interesting she finished second in the AA but didn’t make a single event finals. (she was added in to bars finals when Simone was pulled)She is going to have to clean up some bars and beam if she wants a shot at competing with Supergirl Simone but she has a year to do it so we will see what happens. She’s growing on me:) I missed her vault but was impressed with her floor. She is turning into quite the dancer now that Kim Zmeskal has stopped trying to remind the world that she was a former AA champion by giving everyone a crapon copy of her ugly ass floor routine (and yes I meant to write crapon instead of carbon)

Aly Raisman, what a comeback. She finished 3rd in the AA after Kyla’s crash (more on that later) but was very impressive overall. She needs to work on her flexibility again like she did in 2012 but she’s got most of the skills to compete with every but Simone already. Overall I felt Aly was underscored the entire meet. Not on her vault because her form is just tragic on that event but her bars were great for her (nearly a leg separation) and on beam her leaps were lacking but not nearly as bad as the judges made it seem. They seemed to ignore the connection issues with certain other gymnasts but not with Aly. Aly’s tumbling is back but I don’t really like the floor music. Will be very interesting to see what she brings next year.

Kyla Ross finished 10th after her usual routines until…. Her DTY really flies off that vaulting table. It was huge and IMO underscored compared to what everyone else showed for similar scores. She hit her upgrades on bars and hit beam and then came floor. I don’t know if anyone else noticed but there was a lot of bouncy landings going on in that corner of the floor and it claimed Kyla as it’s biggest victim. After her Arabian double front she went flying attempting to throw her stag leap. It looked like she was close to hitting her head too. Glad she was okay. It could have been a lot worse.

Maggie Nichols looked pretty good overall too. I felt she was nit picked to death by the judges compared to others. She’s lost some weight and it has really helped her lines but she does some weird thing with her knee’s especially on beam. I don’t know.

Okay so what you all have been waiting for my impression of Gabrielle. I thought she looked pretty good especially considering how messy she was in podium training. Her DTY wasn’t bad. She had to downgrade the bar routine from what she showed in Podium because she wasn’t hitting it but she was fairly deducted so I had no problem with her score. Same on floor (5.5 start value) but on beam even though she hit I found her routine lacking anything of quality but the one big skill. Her missed connections were credited but that issue belongs with the dumbass judges who refuse to do their job but only for gymnasts they like. Overall she needs a lot more difficulty if she wants a chance to compete for a medal in the AA and to compete with Simone she needs a lot more than that. It was a good start. She stayed on all 4 events which is something to be proud of.

I have not seen the Event Finals yet.

So what did you think???

Oddly I was more nervous watching Gabby on bars instead of beam. Remember back in the day when no one could watch her on beam without lighting a candle or saying a prayer lol? Overall I think she did pretty well. I like how she carries herself during competition. Much more mature. She has a year to clean up her routine. She really needs to get her amanar back, build up/clean up bars. Her bar dismount actually does not look as good as it did last quad. The body position imo is not laid out and it looks like she is flinging herself from the bar.

Aly my god when she did that first pass on floor I said oh shit shes back! Skinner better step it up. Imo Aly needs to clean up beam and vault. I like the construction of her bar routine.

As for the other countries, Frances gymnast are beautiful to watch even with the low diffuculty. The toe point, the leaps, I only wish they were more competitive D score wise.

Finally Enus M is back and she has a bar meltdown. Im glad she still has her form. Oh and I am slowly becoming a fan of Tea Ugrin.
Italy is slowly making their way back into the fold.

    Australia-No comment
    Canada-ok team

  2. baileyac Says:

Great review GTT !! I agree that Kyla and Simone should have stayed home. It would haven given the American girls more experience and a boost of confidence.

And yes sainabou!!! lol I would have to walk out of the room when Gabby preformed on beam. It was so scary. Beam is looking good for Gabby. I still don’t know about her comeback. If she was with Chow I would be more confident in her comeback but I’m not for sure how I feel about her new coach. She seems very quiet. I just don’t know if she is capable of teaching the upgrades Gabby needs.

  3. JAS4 Says:

I actually thought Gabby’s block on vault looked worse than in 2012. She starts twisting on the table and didn’t get much height or distance. I don’t know if she will be able to get her Amanar back without fixing that block.

  4. Brittany Says:

Bailie should have won bars. Kyla hit almost no handstands; one of them being wayyy off, obvious leg separation in her transition and has .1 lower difficulty.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

bailie missed two handstands also, and my count was kyla only missed one. Plus bailie had a huge step on the dismount. I dont know which routine you watched. Totally different impression.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I saw Kyla only missing one as well.

      • Brittany Says:

        Bailee completely stuck her dismount….

      • Brittany Says:

But I did go and rewatch it, and did notice the slightest angle on a handstand, so I do stand corrected there. I’m happy for Kyla nonetheless; as I think she needed that win considering what happened in the TF on floor.

  5. nero Says:

Every time I see Ragan Smith I can’t believe she turns senior next year, she’s so freaking cute.

This year/next year I hope Ashton and/or Polina show up with huge bars. I would love to see the meltdown of an American winning bars at Worlds or the Olympics.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree with you but I’m also sick of seeing the Americans cream everyone else on everything else (except bars and beam)…well, even beam they do well (the US). I just wish there was more competition from an AA/Team standpoint. I don’t like depending on Iordache only.

  6. gymbot Says:

Thanks for the wrap up! It really doesn’t make sense to send Biles or Ross to a small meet. Practice is practice, especially when other teams are not really competing with the US anymore – they easily could have done an internal competition at home to test everyone. Who knows, maybe it’s the atmosphere of the competition that Marta likes or Jesolo is one of the rewards for her hardest working girls. Either way, an injury from this meet is not acceptable. Glad no one was hurt in the end.

I’m also glad Key performed well when considering that she had struggled at camp. Plus she could be a top floor worker. I definitely had some doubts about her place on the team, given the comebacks and such – but she did a great job.

    • madbladescasc Says:

I agree about Jesolo meet being some kind of reward for gymnasts. Thinking about going to Jesolo as a “going to the gymnastics competition” is a mistake (at least for us – the audience). Those girls get a chance to travel to Italy, see some great places – like on vacation trip. Yes, they are competing, but seriously, when they are winning by such a big margin (I guess even using the word “margin” is a huge misunderstanding here), that it is not so hard for them (at least in the mental department), when compared to, for example US Nationals. So they send Biles and Ross, because they both deserve that (for both of them it is not some special competition, considering that they are on top of US Gymnastics for two-three years by this time, in Biles case: on top of World Gymnastics too). This meet was much more important for Aly and Gabby (for example, as some of people here are suggesting, to experiment on them working with the team). And for what I’ve seen, Aly should be able to get her BB, FX and even Vault back at 2012 level (I had no idea she was going to compete this incredible first pass on floor so early), and for Gabby it may be bigger problem (but still it is not impossible). I can see Aly going as a technically all-around gymnast, but mainly to compete her best three events for the team in Rio, if she works on her form and gets Amanar back. It is possible that this time we will see some veterans, and at this point saying “one” is rather a safe bet, but “two” is also getting a lot more realistic. Can we see three of them coming back? Who knows.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Traveling to Italy and staying in a hotel for a week is not a I know they get to explore Italy for one day but this is like Kyla’s 5th trip to Jesolo. I think she’s seen it enough.

  7. Exgymgurl Says:

Im glad she sent the whole team. it gives gabrielle a chance to realize she isnt top dog or even close by any means. Plus as nasty as she was to Aly on twitter. The whole point from what the coaches were told was this was a team chemistry test. Marta doesnt want drama. marta doesnt want crap, she wants them to act like a team. Gabby didnt do that. In an non full team situation where maybe she takes second AA her crap doesnt come out. Remember letting mattie larson screw up at 2010 worlds on floor in team finals? This is the beginning of the end for gabby. Plus Kyla is pissed and will come out stronger for nationals and worlds. the world needs to see that Simone is consistent, and she has a great aupporting cast. Bailie didnt mess up. laurie hernandez looked great. They will be on podium and the floor will not be like that for the olympics or worlds or PG. Kyla just needs to hit. I disagree in that Gabby just looked sluggish to me the whole competition. Yes Aly was hammered on connections and Gabby wasnt. Judges wanted to justify her AA win, but that being said, I dont think gabby has enough time between now and worlds. Aly has a lot of room for cleanup time.

    • Cupquaked Says:

Agreed. I think the reason all of these girls were sent was to see how they interact with each other and support each other even in a lesser stakes environment. Gabby is not a team player. Which is sad because I remember 2011 worlds when she was incredibly supportive of Jordyn (maybe because she was just there for bars and wasn’t competing against her). I think her ego has gotten the best of her. I do not see her making the world or Olympic teams unless she cleans up her act and her routines.

I also really hate when people start to compare her to Simone. Like, that girls difficulty and consistency is untouchable. Even if Gabby had 10 years and didn’t age and the planets aligned and the world was perfect she still wouldn’t beat Simone on a good day.

      • tulip Says:

It seems to me that time has not helped Gabby with her attitude. Big Natalie is still a huge influence over her. Gabby is old enough to start thinking for herself. I wonder how close Mom is to spending all of Gabbys money on crap for herself? That could make anyone humble really fast.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mommy was on vacation in Amsterdamn. That probably isn’t spelled right. How many vacations can this woman take ?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Ugh, the only reason they compare Gabby with Simone is skin color I feel like. Irks me. Simone is more of a Shawn type gymnast only with more power and finesse (in some points, in others not so much); and Gabby is…well, maybe more like a Kupets or something. Powerful and clean form for the most part but at the end of the day somewhat forgetful (with the exception of the Olympic win in Gabby’s case of course). That’s my take. They both “flew” on bars.

I hate Fatalie. If she isn’t fat, she’s still fatal. To her daughter’s gym career, that is. I feel like she put it in Gabby’s head that a coach needs to dedicate ALL time to Gabby, and that’s why Chow all of a sudden didn’t work for Gabby.

I need to watch Jesolo videos. All I’ve seen so far is Kyla’s bars. I was excited to see upgrades there. Can someone tell me – is a double front dismount worth more than her double layout? I still thought what a beautiful layout she had despite her height.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        check your e-mail

      • gymbot Says:

In reply to Sanity, the double front is worth the same a the double layout. The upgrades in Kyla’s routine is only 0.1 tenth in difficulty, but the fact that she only now needs to kip to handstand two or three times is worth a few tenths probably.

    • Cupquaked Says:

Also Laurie Hernandez’s floor was the best. I think she’s my new favorite floor worker just from all the sass.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She did look a bit sluggish but what she did in training vs the competition was day and night. I know she downgraded some bars and beam but even I was impressed with the difference between the two and it takes a lot to impress me at least when it comes to people I dislike.

That being said she did nothing special over anyone else and she needs huge upgrades to be in the running. Nothing she did the last few days made me think she deserves 1 of 5 spots on any team. Biles and Key and even Kyla means specialists for the rest of the team. They will need a bar routine

      • Cupquaked Says:

I could definitely see Worlds including Aly but I have a hard time picturing her on the Olympic team. I can see a team with Simone, Bailie, Kyla, Norah, and Laurie with Skinner and Kocian/Baumann as alternates. But I could also see a team of Simone, Bailie, Kyla, Aly, and Laurie/Norah with the same alternates. Honestly our senior field is so deep I’m pretty sure by 2016 we could send 3 different teams that could all place first and many more that could medal. That’s insane to think about.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Baumann and Kocian I don’t see on any Olympic team.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Noooo Skinner. Just, no.

I think if Aly stays healthy she’s on the 2016 team. I just have a feeling. Thank gawd Kyla has a beautiful DTY…I am hoping Marta realizes that she doesn’t need a team of amanars this next Olympics to beat everyone else.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Judges don’t care about execution so I am afraid the Amanar is here to stay. It’d an extra 6 tenths

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I think Marta will go with 5 AA’ers for the 2016 Olympic team, and they all will have to have strong vaults. Just based on history. I see Biles for sure (she’s like last quad’s Weiber, only more so). The other four – Ross, Key, Raisman, and probably a junior that will be a senior? That’s what I’m guessing at this point. It’s going to be a blood battle for sure.

Oh does anyone have the vid of Gabby talking smack on Aly – saying that Aly came back first or whatever?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It was part of the AA feed. Poor Simone was pushed to the back of the 2 Olympians and she got like 2 seconds to answer one question. There was also some funny looks from Kyla while the top 6 or 7 gymnasts were congratulated on their AA. She was not happy to not be one of them.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Hope that motivates Kyla to hit, hit, hit next time. She would have been there if not for her floor, right? I don’t know how much she got deducted for that fall. I have yet to watch her beam – any upgrades there? I was happy to see some of her old bar stuff back. And stoked she beat Keys at bars. I want to see Kyla on the 2016 team…and I want her to get an individual medal there too.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        I hope it motivates her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Aly’s floor

        This has some videos too

Looks like Gabby isn’t part of the cool boat.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

LOL it’s like she’s sitting at the “kids” table…

  8. nero Says:

I think Gabby and her family are going to have their own reality show?? There’s not a lot of info but that’s what this is right? Perhaps that’s what Chow said no to.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

And now we know why Gabrielle is coming back to By the way Exgymgurl has mentioned this happening before.

      • sainabou nyang Says:

Speaking of shows so to speak gymnastike is doing a series titled Legends starring Dominique Moceanu. The trailer for it is everything 😀

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        I just

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That was just…I don’t even know what to say. Moceanu and “legend” should not be in the same sentence. She was more of a flash in the pan. I love how she loves to refer to herself as the “youngest Olympic champion” but give me a break; if they hadn’t changed the age rules she would have been wiped out of that title long ago.

She has such a high opinion of herself. She and Gabby and Nastia NEED to hang out – on a private island.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

A private island with no boat. You need to be specific with these things 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I knew I was forgetting something…and no internet access either!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Desert island means island and water period. There will be no way off. Now that would make a great reality show. But I am the AA gold medalist. BUT I HAVE 15 WORLD AND OLYMPICS MEDALS AND THE AA GOLD Miss no event finals. Then Moceanu jumps in the ocean with the sharks and dies because she has NOTHING 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

She’d be like “but I was the youngest…” And then she’d jump. Because who the hell cares. If the age rule were in play then she wouldn’t even have been on the team.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Knowing Moceanu’s ego she would scream she had more fans. Oh the epic trash talking.

      • Case Says:

I can’t either. Oh my word.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gym world is going prime time with stupid

      • Exgymgurl Says:

thank you. I said a long while back that gabby would get a reality show and actually shot a pilot a while back. I think now with her coming abck and not making the olympic team NBC will still do it for the build up to Rio. Theyll include her whole family doing craptacular things. Gabby will also be “gifted” a spot on the tour. Why does it surprise anyone that Aly doesnt want to be near Gabby? Of course Gabby ended up with the juniors…. Kyla and them are all sick of her. Just wait she will be vanquished off to pan ams and NBC will make it look like on her Espn reality show that its an “important” competition in the leadup to Rio.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Marta but Mohini on an Olympic team because of Pam Anderson. Gabrielle will get her free pass

      • gymbot Says:

I was wondering about this. Gabby is hugely popular, even if she isn’t popular with many fans of the sport. She’s around to stay, perhaps all the way to Rio.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Who’s really going to watch this sh&t. That will be cancelled before the second episode, I swear. They can’t find enough gymnastic fans to view competitions in a non-Olympic year…

      • Gymbee Says:

Also, as much as I laugh saying it, not enough drama. I mean Gabby is living with her grandmother and probably goes to bed at 9 pm. Gymnasts doesn’t exactly have wild, exciting lives.
Then the parts about Natalie would be her buying new Louboutin shoes, and some random, regular teenage drama with the other kids. Boooring.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gabrielle has her own apartment if anything Grandma is living with her while Gabrielle pays the rent.

      • nero Says:

That’s the thing. If this was one of those ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries it could be really exciting/interesting. Actually showing the day to day of an elite gymnast would be something people would watch a few months before the Olympics.

Because NBC all the time is like ‘THIS IS THE TOUGHEST SPORT EVER THESE GIRLS GO THROUGH SO MUCH’ shows 20 second clip of a gymnast getting a hangnail.

I want the real behind the scenes stuff. But this just screams Reality Show where they have to make stuff up to do because 99% of all our lives are just doing the same thing everyday.

Oh and PS I hate how on Reality Shows the people are always like “Why are people taking pictures of me I’m just a normal person trying to blend in” Oh I don’t know maybe it’s because YOU HAVE A CAMERA CREW WITH YOU!!!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kate Gosselin back in the day said that.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Most reality shows are 99% fake – even the way they filmed Laguna Beach (MTV show for us older folks who grew up in the 90s)…they would have the group “re-enact” fights and such even if it didn’t happen a certain way. No true life has that much drama, so they make it up to keep an audience. If reality TV were “true,” the audience would become bored.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

No way laguna beach was fake. now youre going to tell me that the Hills, the kardashians, RHOC, all fake and scripted. No. really. No……let me find the news anchors LMAO over Ryan Lochtes short lived reality ahow

    • Tortuga Says:

I think McKayla Maroney could have been interesting in a reality show back in 2012. She’s far more entertaining than Gabby and had a fire under her ass to prove something after she fell in vault finals. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I wish Marta would be okay with a documentary style show following them through the 2016 season leading up to the Olympic team selection process. Film at some hopeful prospects gyms and film at the camps and competitions. As well as the few times the girls get out of the gym to have fun. Get the girl interactions with each other as well. The cat-y glares and comments behind the scenes. As well as interviews with Marta, coaches, gymnasts and parents. Team GB had one similar in the lead up to 2008 games, but lets face it USA would be a lot more intense.

  9. sanitynmotion Says:

Dammit. Does anyone have good links to Jesolo? All I can find are Kyla’s bars and Aly’s floor. Maybe I suck at searches. I don’t want to watch the whole thing; just the US girls for now.

  10. Exgymgurl Says:

Most of the links got taken down. Disagree marta will get the judges to underscore gabby at nationals, since she did poorly internwpationally. Gabby is not that popular with anyone. I cant see her making a team over Aly. like it or not marta is a huge fan of hard work pays off romanian style, and she raves about kyla and aly setting the bar for the younger gymnasts in terms of hard work. marta liked peszeck over shayla for the same reason. Sam worked hard. Simone has disciplined herself and now works very hard. marta wants that example. I think a big part of 2016 will be injuries like it is every quad.

  11. JK Says:

Did anybody watch Nastia on DWTS tonight? Her hair – OMG, it rivals her iconic birds nest style of 2012. She danced a samba, which was okay (it has a lot of ballroom samba content), but her dancing is very weird. I don’t know how to explain it, but it seems as if she over-exaggerates her lines/poses, & she still has those damn busted wrists. The ending of her dance was pretty cool, though. And, oh yeah, did you know Nastia goes to NYU? I swear she mentions this in every interview.

  12. Exgymgurl Says: this is hilarious. Gabbys show should bring lots of these same moments

  13. Exgymgurl Says:

i wonder if you use an IP address mask and seem like you are from italy if you can watch the jesolo vids from the italian gymnastics fed on youtube?

  14. exgymgurl Says: gag and barf a little in my mouth

  15. JK Says:

I have a question: because Simone (& Kyla) can’t accept money from winning competitions in order to keep their NCAA eligibility, who keeps the money? USAG, FIG, or whichever organization is in charge of the competition? If USAG gets the money, is that why Marta sent Simone to Jesolo, knowing she would get a sure-fire win?

  16. exgymgurl Says:

My new favorite Level 7 Daniela Silvas’s child Ava Harper.

Im not sure how the money is distributed. I know like with the Longines watch that goes into a trust for Kyla and she will get it at the end of her NCAA eligibility. Also I think that whatever they win goes to USA Gymnastics and USA Gymnastics can offset Simone and Kylas training. Also buys equipment for their gyms things like that. Grips, it all goes into a fund and they can reimburse off of it direct national team expenses.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

SIlivas was bitching a few weeks ago that parents were complaining because her daughter was being over scored because of who she was. Wouldn’t put it past US judges to over score the daughter of an Olympian and Availability does have shitty form. Why knows just laughed at what I heard.

  17. Ilanchik20 Says:

    I vote for ASac’s return!!

    • JAS4 Says:

I am all for an Asac comeback too lol but I think she would have a tougher time fitting on a team than she did last quad.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I actually think she could fit very well. Now that bars are a little better for the team, she could work. If she had a top 2 vault/floor (maybe 3) and a usable beam, she’d be golden. Actually her and Aly would be fighting for the same spot lol. I love them both but I really would love an ASac redempsion!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I’d honestly love ASac to return but I don’t see it ever happening because of Marta. I really want ASac to write a tell-all…

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I unfortunately agree about ASac. I’d love her comeback and she could do it, if Marta wasn’t in charge.

She really deserves an Olympics redemption. Since Marta won’t take her back–maybe she should join an Italian team, go to Olympics and beat one of U.S girls for a medal. That would be the real redemption. Too bad she won’t do that either.

Since neither will happen, I hope one day she writes a tell all book. She certainly has a personality for it.

  18. sportsfan Says:

So, for any of you who’s been waiting for Mckayla to post that You Tube video where she talks about that health issue she went through, well she finally has. Its 27 minutes long, and its about self confidence, but at around 7:30 she finally says she was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. Look it up on Web MD for those who don’t know what it is.

    • Uglyfatkid Says:

Sorry Maroney, I’m not buying it. Adrenal fatigue is a quasi term made up by quack doctors to describe a myriad of symptoms. Symptoms like: body aches, fatigue, nervousness, sleeping problems, digestive problems, etc. A Dr. cannot run tests or treat the disease…because adrenal fatigue can’t be proven scientifically/medically. Therefore it’s only a theory and not a disease or diagnosis.

Am I saying that she’s making it up? No. But other things (like depression) can cause all the same symptoms. I wouldn’t hang my hat on a medical diagnosis that isn’t real and has zero medical/scientific backing. They should be looking for other causes of her symptoms.

I’m going to be the insensitive jackass and just say it…I think she’s depressed and wants to call it anything other than what it really is. The acting career that she thought would have made her a star hasn’t happened, and she’s been out of the gymnastic limelight for too long. People are moving on, and I think she’s having a hard time coming to terms with it. She doesn’t want to go to college, and I don’t think she knows what to do with her life. If I was in the same boat, I would be depressed too.

And for the record, there isn’t anything wrong with her being depressed (if she is). I just think that if she really is depressed, she (and her parents) should be treating her depression with counseling (and meds if necessary) instead of focusing on a pseudo-diagnosis of adrenal fatigue (that has no real treatment plan).

I think if she also wants to really help all the young girls with “self confidence”, she should be real/upfront about it and not hide it. A lot people struggle with depression, and girls would get more out of her talking about her battle and struggle with depression then they would out of her nonsensical Youtube videos. After all, non-gymnastic fans fell in love with her because she was real. In one single moment she gave us the infamous “not impressed” face, which conveyed only the truth (disappointment/anger). That’s what resonates with people…the truth. Be a bitch. Be depressed. Be unsure of yourself. Be whatever. It doesn’t matter what it is in the end. Just be who you are. Be real. That’s what people want to see.

Whatever it is that is actually going on, I hope she gets better soon. I also hope to see her compete again one day. Even though I think her chances of making the Rio team are slim to none, I would still like to see her try.

I’m going to thank you UFK (I am too lazy to write your name out) for telling me what adrenal fatigue is without me having to Google it. I think you hit the nail on the head with her being truly just depressed and having a “mid-life” crisis so to speak even though she’s all of 20 years old or so.

McKayla expected fame out of the last Olympics and she anticipated it would stay with her. I’m guessing she didn’t realize how fickle the American people are. Trends come and go, and so do people and shows, and the “big” hits, and so on and so forth. One day Penny from the Big Bang Theory is going to have this realization when that show eventually ends. She’ll have some spots in some rom-coms, and then all interest in her will fade, and she’ll be pissed because she isn’t having the same success as Jennifer Aniston.

        I totally digress.

Maroney I feel like is only doing gymnastics because she wants to stay relevant, and even that isn’t helping her stay relevant, and it’s irritating her and causing anxiety. Let’s face it gymnastics is a hard, harsh way to stay relevant.

I feel like Maroney really needs to talk to Shawn, but even then Shawn was able to still eek out her “fame” via horrible reality shows. Hrm. Okay, maybe she needs to talk to Carly Patterson. And she needs to go to college.

She can post all the pretty pics of herself in the world but this world is full of beautiful people, and Hollywood knows it. They have the pick of the litter and aren’t going to seek out Maroney individually because she’s got nothing to offer but her gymnastics career, which is only slightly relevant once every four years.

Um she said she suffered from depression in the video. And I highly doubt Mckayla would ‘make up’ some diagnosis just to avoid saying depression, because she did say it.

When you have adrenal fatigue you have different types of symptoms that the doctors can’t pin down. Both of the Williams’ sisters suffered from fatigue. You can go years and years before you finally get a diagnosis.

I have personally been around a family member who has suffered from severe depression and anxiety for years. ANYTHING can set you down the deep dark path that depression does to you. I’ve lived with a person who can’t get out of bed, who sits and cries for hours on end, who didn’t want to live anymore. They had no reason to feel this way, their life was pretty great but they still had all these hurtful thoughts in their head.

The fact that people can sit here and pass it off as her being ‘sad’ because she’s not ~famous~ anymore really really irritates me.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I am not saying Mckayla is lying and I don’t think she is but the fact is sometimes people do lie and sometimes the people do stretch the truth and that is why someone might question Mckayla’s issues since it has been shown in the past she will pretty much do anything to get attention. I am not saying she is lying it makes perfect sense to me that she might be depressed.

A lot of gymnasts have issues with dealing with life after they are done with the sport.

Yeah she was pretty open saying she was seriously depressed. And even if “adrenal fatigue” is wish washy, putting a name to something that is unable to be diagnosed can actually be an absolute relief and really help someone dealing with their symptoms. Not knowing what is wrong with you, seeing countless doctors and feeling like shit for months or years is agonising and debilitating. So perhaps this adrenal fatigue “diagnosis” gives her some comfort and encouragement.

Personally I think the photo scandal probably has a lot to do with it, more so than her gymnastics or future career goals. That shit would screw up anyone, much less a teenager in the spotlight.

Her video is so earnest that I feel bad for rolling my eyes and thinking “ugh you are so obviously still SUCH a kid when it comes to life” but it’s very sweet that she feels close to her fans and wants to use her experiences to help others.

You guys all pretty much hit every point that I wanted to. Nice work.

I think she’s scared to announce retirement. She sounds like a kid who doesn’t know which way is up, and is trying to grab on to something that will give her purpose now that the gymnastics part of her life is coming to an abrupt end. As far as the adrenal fatigue goes, while it doesn’t sound like a vetted, researched medical issue, its symptoms do sound like something an athlete that goes through the Olympic pressure cooker would deal with. I can totally see her body giving out on her, depression setting in, and it taking time to work through. Is she all the way through it? Probably not. The first thing I’d tell her to do is rip off the band-aid and call it a career. That way, she can take the pressure of training and that commitment off her shoulders while she continues to get her head right. Yet, I wouldn’t take her off of a routine, so that way her “normal” stays the same for awhile. If she wants to act, have her go to USC Film School or something to learn the craft and that way she’ll have something to do. If she wants to model, she damn sure is pretty enough to do it if that is something she’s passionate about. If she wants to go the motivational speaker route, which is what this video is despite its repetitiveness, then have her go to school to at least help her get her thoughts and ideas straightened out so that way she can say more than she was able to in this 27 minute diatribe where she talked herself in circles. She is personable and charismatic enough to do really well on that circuit.

I will say that I could do with out the Far East/1960’s Woodstock platitudes she was using, cause after the 5th time she said that (insert overused line here), she started to lose what she was saying. I do wish her luck and good health. I think she just needs time to figure out what to do with herself now that her athletic career is most likely over.

@Nero – I want to apologize if I have offended you (or anyone), because that was not my intention with my post.

I didn’t mean to imply that she is ONLY depressed because she isn’t famous. Depression is a complex and grueling disease, and she has probably been dealing with it for some time. What I was trying to say (but didn’t covey well), is that her lack of fame, her gymnastics career decline, etc. has probably exasperated her depression. I too have had depression in my family, and I know that certain times, seasons, events, etc. can trigger deeper more severe depression. That’s what I think has happened with her. All of these things has made her depression worse.

I also want to clarify that I am not mocking depression or her issues. My main concern is with the diagnosis (and I use that term lightly) given to her. I work in the sciences, and have a hard time with pseudo-science being spouted left and right by people. The truth is adrenal fatigue is a therory. That’s it. It’s like time travel. There is no data scientifically/medically which backs up the idea. As such, my concern is that she is wasting her time chasing a white rabbit that doesn’t exist. Depression can cause all of these symptoms. So wouldn’t it make sense to focus on treating her depression (which is known, proven, studied, diagnosed, etc.) instead of some mysterious thing that may or may not exist? Especially when she has already been diagnosed with depression? Shouldn’t you focus on the things you already know are there?

I will fully admit that I did not watch the whole 27 min video. I got about a min in and turned it off, so I didn’t get to the part where she talks about her depression. I’m glad that she is being real about it, because there is no need to hide. We all have issues, and depression is so common. She can help so many girls by talking about it…so I’m proud of her for that.

Once again, I appologize if I offended you (or anyone else). The only people I set out to purposely offend is Nastia and Gabby…so I’m sorry you got caught in the crosshairs. 🙂

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You don’t need to apologize for your opinion EVER. Mckayla could very well be depressed because she isn’t having the career she wanted. I don’t see anything wrong with thinking that could be a possibility. Think about always being the center of attention because of your gymnastics and then not being the center of attention. That could make any kid depressed.

@nero Venus Williams was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome (an autoimmune disease) a couple years ago.
