My thoughts on the 2014 World Championships part 2

My Favorite and least favorite things from the 2014 World Championships

Some of my favorites

Kohei winning his fifth World title at this worlds is an amazing feat. Add that to his Olympic title and he is arguably the best gymnast the World has ever seen. I say arguably because Sherbo winning 6 gold medals and a world title on every event is in the discussion.

He plans on competing through 2020 when the games take place in Japan.

Kyla winning a medal in the AA but realizing she needs upgrades if she wants to be there again. Yes she was lucky to win an All Around medal and only did because Mustafina and Yao fell but the same can be said for Mustafina the year before. (she won because Yao and Iordache fell) At this rate Yao wins a medal next year because Biles and Mustafina fall to even out the playing field:)

Bee Gate was hilarious but nothing beats the look on Mustafina’s face when Nelli Kim hugs

Bozo the clown ( John Orozco)tanking prelims and bringing nothing to the team in team finals that couldn’t have been replaced with other teammates. He was the only US male gymnast not to make an event final. Hence proving that the over scoring he gets in the US does the US no favors in the end.

LEAST Favorite things

The underscoring of Chunsong Shang. So I get it. You think she is under age but unless you plan on using your resources to prove that opinion blatantly cheating by under scoring her is bush league.

Her prelims bar routine was down right beautiful. It had a 6.3 start value and you literally have the audacity to give her a score only 2 and a half tenths higher than the messed up shit by Madison Kocian? who only had a 2 tenth start value on her and screwed up?

Same could be said with her 6.0 start value on floor where she didn’t even make it out of the 13’s for a hit routine. Was it her best routine no but she was destroyed by the judges while the everyone else was given a free pass for horrible work (Skinner’s double double laid out that was anything but and Mustafina who walked through her routine like she didn’t want to be there are 2 examples)

Is it too much to ask judges to do their job for everyone?

Other things

Kocian and Baumann proving they both did not deserve the free pass they got to make this team. The best score Kocian got on bars was a 14.900 and Baumann ‘s high beam score of 14.500 hardly deserved the the specialist role they we’re handed. Was there even a point of putting Kocian up on vault for a Yurchenko? and lets discuss the injury that kept Baumann out of the Pan American games. Sounds like another ploy by Marta like the one that kept Annia Hatch out of Nationals so she could petition to the Olympic trials. Both gymnasts had bad attitudes after not making the event finals when they made mistakes too. I guess the point of even mentioning this is that Marta playing her games did not work out for either gymnast on a personal level (neither made an event finals on their “signature ” event but sadly it worked for Marta.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention Mustafina’s beam and floor bronze. I can’t decide if it should be under least of most favorite category.

Also, I really wanted Ashton to get that bars bronze medal but I’m glad that she showed she is a deserving bar specialist unlike Kocian.

  2. JAS4 Says:

Worlds was definitely more interesting than I thought it would be.

  3. gymbot Says:

Would you have picked Dowell over Kocian? I think I would have, but it’s hard to know – Al Fong didn’t post her beam or her floor, but considering Kocian only posted high 13s I’m not sure it would have mattered much who went in terms team qualification.

I’m curious to see who shows up at this October camp as well. Who might go to Stuggart or Glasgow (World Cups) in Novemeber/December. Maybe Raisman? Maybe Nichols now that her knee dislocation should be well healed? Anyone think Douglas will be at this camp or it will be pushed back?

  4. sanitynmotion Says:

I still need to watch. I don’t think Baumann or kocian make another worlds team unless like this year everyone else is injured.

  5. Tortuga Says:

Yay! I was hoping Simone would get to do some fun stuff like this. Hoping she actually goes on these shows.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Be think this has anything to do with the gymnastics it has more to do with what happened on the podium with the Bee. Main stream media only Cares about gym during an Olympic year.

      • Tortuga Says:

I’m sure that has a lot to do with it but Shawn was also on Ellen after worlds in 2007.

      • Gymbee Says:

Ugh yep. Gymnastics finally made it to the Norwegian news, that NEVER happens. All because of the bee.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I hate kimmel. Please skip that shoe simone.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Show. I hate this

      • mim Says:

She meant Jimmy Fallon! She tweeted her mistaking the two afterwards lol.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Thank God. Fallon is okay though I find him phony and I have no patience for Yankee fans that pretend to be Red Sox fans because they did a movie.

      • Tortuga Says:

I like Jimmy Fallon and Ellen.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I like Ellen but Kimmell is an idiot. He is not funny.

Never mind, she switched that to Fallon. He’s okay.

      • mim Says:

I prefer Fallon to Kimmel but I’ve read a ton of blind items about Fallon being a total douchecanoe to his wife/kid which turns me off a bit, but his show is better. Ellen is great, she’ll like Simone I bet!

  6. Melanie Says:

Baumann actually pleasantly surprised me in qualifications. They didn’t show her beam routine in the live feed for team finals, so I haven’t watched it yet. I doubt either her or Kocian will see another worlds team ever again, so I’m not too upset they were on this team, especially since there were so few other candidates. I just can’t get on the Dowell train, and thank goodness Madison Desch didn’t actually compete with the team.

Simone came quite close to winning four of the five individual gold medals, as well as team gold. What a beast. And with a great personality to boot! She’s on track to being the best American gymnast of all time, though Miller gave her some big shoes to fill.

Seems like each of the big four had some great successes. Iordache was probably the biggest good surprise, even if she fell in the beam EF. Watching that AA final was so exciting because of her. Musty pulled it together for some nice hardware. China shined on bars. And the US showed their strength as usual. It was a much better worlds than I expected.

    • mim Says:

I agree.. who else was left instead of Baumann and Kocian? Dowell, Hundley, Hults and Toronjo, is that all? Poor Desch but she was no way the calibre of competing at worlds. I feel like Baumann has more to offer than Kocian actually. However I bet this whole team will be NCAA come Rio except Simone but hoping Kyla proves me wrong. I actually am rather proud of Ashton too, she’s done quite well considering she came out of nowhere and I’m curious how she will develop over the next couple of years.

I actually don’t mind Musty winning bronze on floor now that I’ve watched floor finals. Mykayla’s tumbling was enjoyable to watch but hopefully this will make her coaches realise the girl needs better choreography and dance skills otherwise it’s just watching acro to music.

And honestly.. this is probably an unpopular opinion but I don’t get the Ferrari hype on floor. I don’t think she’s any more artistic or dancer-y than Simone to be honest. Vanessa stands still a lot and gracefully flaps her arms all over the place to dramatic music and for whatever reason people think that means she has more artistry.. and she doesn’t dance out of the corners well at all. I think Simone actually “dances” more throughout her routine and better than Vanessa. That’s not to say she sucks on floor but it seems that she thinks she is miles better than what she is.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Ferrari is okay but I too do not get the hype. She’s successful from a small Country where they don’t have a lot of success so much like Moors she is given a lot more credit then deserved.

      • Melanie Says:

Oh, I’m definitely with you. I’ve never understood why people loved Ferrari’s gymnastics. I completely hate her three tumbling passes on the same diagonal – that breaks so many code rules, and it seems like she (or her coaches) don’t care to even try to follow the code.

GTT is right about Moors, too, though her dance was actually quite good in her pre-London routines. She had great choreo, but since she’s gone through puberty, her form is crap.

Whereas there are other “small country” gymnasts that don’t get the hype they deserve. I really like Jessica Lopez, but nobody pays any attention to her. I also like Noemi Makra.

      • gymbot Says:

Jennifer Lopez is great! Funny though, she keeps ending up with the same music as top USA AAers – Bross’ music in 2011 and now Key’s music in 2014. Since she’s pro, I expect we’ll see a lot of her at the FIG World Cups this year (ditto for Iordache)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Jennifer Lopez:)

      • mim Says:

Fair point about the Vanessa hype because she’s from a small country. Gotta appreciate she’s in her mid twenties and still competitive I suppose!

      • Karlie Says:

I am REALLY torn about Vanessa. On the one hand, she has pretty nice tumbling form and I generally quite like her choreo and music, actually. Plus the fact that she’s 26 and still competing is super impressive.

On the other hand, she constantly – and I mean CONSTANTLY – whines when she doesn’t medal. Last year she apparently called Simone a monkey after the beam EF (Carlotta’s comments were much more public), which is unacceptable. After FX in 2012 she sulked; after beam EF last year she sulked (claiming Aliya somehow cheated her way to the gold and refusing to hug her), and after floor EF this year she sulked and bitched about the judges favoring Aliya. Which may or may not be true, but seriously? You’re 26, grow up and act like an adult.

Also the 3 tumbling passes on the same diagonal kind of kills me.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

Ashton will be irrelevant next year with bailie key and gabby douglas back. Traditionally Marta has no place for people that dont make event finals the next year. Score for skinner in that she actually made the two she was expected to make. I think Marta and co expected baumann to take the second beam spot and for Kocian to take a second bars spot but it didnt happen. Thats a failure for Marta. Not bringing it for event finals and sticking her dismount is a huge strike against ashton. Kyla did not do what she needed to do to medal as an individual on beam but she was the backbone of TF and took home and AA bronze. I dont get it but the whole competition the US all looked crummy on beam. The only good routine Kyla put up was in AA. Baumann is not a beam specialist and Kocian is not a bars specialist and if a billion other people were not injured no way are they on this team.

They should be thankful for team gold and go off to NCAA like Macko did.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Ashton has one good event she is horrible at beam and so bad we never see her on floor and vault.

I think she might have a chance as an alternate because she hit her routine and that is pretty impressive considering she had to wait to perform and still did as well as she could have. The other two have no place on a team period.

Gabby is going to need a killer 6.9 bar routine and hit it consistently if she wants a specialist role.

      • Karlie Says:

I think Ashton’s said she is mildly injured, which is why she didn’t perform floor or vault at all this season. Not that it excuses her beam form but that’s why she hasn’t done the other two events at all.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I have been looking for floor and vault routines from her and can’t find any at all.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I haven’t seen Ashton’s vault anywhere but here is her floor. It’s from 2012 qualifier, I think. Looks like she is been wearing that thing on her knees for a while. Does anyone know what that is?

She was slightly hurt this year hopefully she comes back on all events. I kind of like her.

    • tulip Says:

I say this about Vanessa’s pouting after FX EF in 2012- she had every right to be mad, IMHO. She got screwed. She deserved that bronze. Don’t like her, not a fan, don’t like the attitude, but that was definitely some screwy pro-Russia stuff. (Why do I smell Nelli Kim’s fingerprints all over it? jk)

  7. SuperFran Says:

Okay, first of all, why does Shang Chunsong always have the weirdest floor routines? Her teammate who did the Moon River piece had gorgeous choreo! Shang Chunsong routines are a bit all over the place. Does anyone not remember her routine from worlds last year?

Iordache was amazing in the all around final. When she did the last pass in her floor routine, I was like GO LARISSA! I live in Ireland, so I watched the BBC coverage and the BBC commentators love her style and movement. I was absolutely gutted when she fell in event finals, but I’m ecstatic that she walked away with two silver medals. Well deserved.

Speaking of BBC coverage, Beth Tweddle is actually a pretty great commentator. Her voice is easy to listen to, and she doesn’t get tongue-tied at all.

    • Dee Says:

I love the BBC coverage. I think they do a good job of showing a lot of different gymnasts. I get sick of so much focus on the American gymnasts and don’t watch the American broadcasts on TV because they don’t show anyone other than Simone and Kyla. Sure, I’m going to root for my country but I also appreciate gymnasts from around the world and at worlds that’s what I wanna see!

    • mim Says:

Bless Shang, I really think she’s trying her best to be fierce in her floor routine. It’s adorable, and I mean that without any condescension!

Yep BBC love Larisa but who doesn’t? She’s got tons of talent and everyone has just been waiting for her to shine. Despite her setbacks she never seemed to mope about so she’s totally endearing.

Beth’s commentary I’m on the fence about. It may be because of her inexperience but it’s so formulaic and she repeats herself a lot. But she’s knowledgable and positive and doesn’t make it about her which is great.

  8. Lol Says:

    One more game . ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Ilanchik20 Says:

Simone is so cute and modest. She was on Today shod this morning:

Also, saw on Lauren’s twitter. Simone told her that she is been given given the go ahead by Marta to train the triple on vault. Interesting. I didn’t realize Marta had to approve the skills girls train lol

    • Melanie Says:

Yeah, I saw on Gymnastike that she’s looking to train the TTY, Cheng, a laidout double-double on floor (if she gets that, can we get rid of Skinner for good?), and wants to get her upgrades back on bars.

  10. Mr Pete Says:

In 94 Hatch was our best vaulter by a mile and the qualifaction procedures did not really allow event specialists through to trials. Heck- two world medalists (Postell/Heenan) failed to make it through. So atleast there Marta was protecting a needed routine. I can’t argue any such scenario or necessity for Bauman. But we all know Marta does not forget..

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I do not agree. Marta biasdly broke the rules to put a routine she wanted on the team. The fact is the US needed floor workers and Annia’s vault only scored less than a tenth better then Mo who also never should have been on the team even though she did a good job.

I blame this all on Postell being a head case. All she needed to do was hit bars at Nationals and Mohini never makes trials.

Marta thought these two DTY’s would make up for so many flawed other routines and she was wrong and it literally cost the US the gold medal.

      • Katie Says:

Who do you think should have been on the 2004 team? I know very little about the 01-04 quad. After Sydney, I was pretty “meh” about gymnastics and only watched a handful of competitions.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They needed floor workers. Memmel was hurt so Tasha Schwikert She nailed camp and Marta told her if she had done that at Nationals and trials she would be on the team. I thought the purpose of camp was to take gymnasts ready at the right time but Tasha was treated differently. Ashley Postell was done with the games being played and that is why she refused to go to Trials but she too could have helped especially on bars and floor where they would not have needed Carly in team finals. Ashley was also world champ on beam.

Now Ashley was a headcase at Nationals but she was also worn down.If the game had not been played she too would have been in the mix.

Tia Orlando got injured and also could have helped but Marta never even considered her. Look how well gymnasts do when they get fair treatment from Marta.

If Marta had no played games with these kids leading up to 2004 giving special treatment to ones she likes like Annia and even Carly who know what could have happened.

      • biyatch Says:

The rules in 2004 screwed them over. Alicia who couldn’t even qualify to trials because of inconsistent beam/craptacular bars could have put up team final worthy routines on vault and floor. She could have challenged Rosu on vault and definitely been in contention for floor finals, possibly even in the medals.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Didn’t she mess up floor too. I swear I remember her choking another event too.

Marta’s rules that she changed when she feels like. Those rules screwed her over ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

I didn’t follow as closely then as I do now. But I really wanted ASac on that team. Her floor plus a medal worthy vault should have put her on the team. Stupid rules. But I guess, it’s also good she didn’t make it. I enjoyed seeing her finally get it together mentally in 2010-11. I will be forever sad that there isn’t a Sacromone vault. Although it’ll be a little funny ( ironic) if Aly gets that vault since I heard she is training a Rudi lol

        CAMP is next week!

      • tulip Says:

Vise would have been a good person to be on the team i believe

  11. SuperFran Says:
    • Lithi Says:

I swear to God somebody on Nastia’s IG said something like “Hey, you remembered her name!” And now I can’t find it. She probably deleted it. *snerks*

  12. SuperFran Says:

    He Kexin’s looking good.

  13. tulip Says:

He is adorable here. Nastia not so much

  14. tulip Says:

And looking at He now, in order for her to have been age eligible in Beijing, she would need to be 21/22 now. What does everyone think? I’m bad with ages.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She could be 21. I work with a girl that literally looks like she is 15 and she just turned 22 (She’s Chinese)

Look at Dawes in 92. Did she look 16 to you? nope.

      • gymnerd Says:

Dawes was only 14 or 15 in 92. The age limit was different back then.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Dawes was born in 76. Depending on birth month she turned 16 that year. Doesn’t matter about rules. Fact is she did not look her age and she wasn’t alone back then looking younger than she was.

      • tulip Says:

I was still getting carded at 35 and work with a woman who is really trashy, looks like a stripper, dresses like a street walker and is botoxed to the ends of the earth, and looks like she’s in her mid 50s. She’s 31. Like I said, really bad with ages and am wrong more often than right

    • Melanie Says:

I think China cheated, and it’s not because He looked young. It’s because there were multiple sources online that listed her age differently than the Chinese government did. Also she was absent from Worlds the year before the Olympics. But, it’ll never be proven unless she says something then years down the road a la Sydney. People act like you’re a horrible person if you dare accuse the Chinese of falsifying ages when they have been proven to have done so. And that doesn’t take anything away from the quality of this athlete.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It’s time to prove it or shut up about it. What we believe is irrelevant. Real proof that they can be used not proof already explained away and accepted. Ever heard about a beaten dead horse.?

      • Melanie Says:

Oh, I’ve accepted it. It’s not like I stay up at night thinking about it. I was just stating my opinion, which has no consequence on the results of the competition. I believe that I already said that He was a great athlete. For the record, I also think the age limit should be done away with.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I didn’t mean to imply you stay up at night lol I guess I am just over the discussion and every time the subject gets brought up the same opinion is beaten over and over again.

      • Melanie Says:

Fair enough. Hey, at least she stopped Nastia from being a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Silver linings, am I right?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Yang Yilin should have one of those medals regardless.

The judging was so fishy at that Olympics.

      • Karlie Says:

In regard to Kexin’s looks…to be honest, I’m in my 20s and occasionally people still assume I’m a teenager. Sucks but that’s life. I also work with a Chinese post-doc who is 29 and looks like she’s about 16.

In the original photo? I’d say she easily looks 12, but could be older. However, in the new one she could easily be 21 or 22, so it’s kind of a tough call (for instance…she looks older than my post-doc friend. haha).
