She did and still does. I’ll never understand the judging generosity toward her. She’s jumpy and walks around like she’s going to get punished or something. Looks terrified all the time. When Simone hugged her, she looked like she was going to jump out of her skin.
It seems there is a mandate that her form problems and major steps be ignored. It also could be that there is a tacit understanding that if possible, spread the gold around countries.
On the other hand, Simone and McKayla looked great. Skinner has been working hard on her form from what I can tell. She’s going home with at least 2 medals!
I agree, she had bad landings on both (large step forward on the first vault with an execution score of 9.4 and then on the second piked down, bent over at the waist, and a large step for a 9.0…she was definitely overscored on those vaults) and that cost Biles the gold…ugh…so tired of these judges.
Hong’s amanar has looked so much improved. Her block is huge, crazy Maroney-esque height on it. She submitted the TTY but didn’t compete it – it actually looks like a realistic vault for her. She did have a bigger step than Simone, but scored a few tenths less on her amanar than did Simone on hers. The cheng wasn’t too bad, though the step looked more like a big break on beam, lol. She has improved her form on the cheng this year vs last year too. The difficulty was enough to beat Simone. It wasn’t by much, only .045 separated the two. So Simone had higher execution scores, just not enough higher to beat Hong’s .8 higher difficulty.
The vault execution scores were all high today. Did you see Fragapane’s scores??? Talk about bad form…hers is just awful. And yet her execution scores were 9.033 and 9.0….WTF?????
Hong was surprised/looked like she wanted to jump out of her skin because she grew up in North Korea. They learn that Americans and South Koreans are evil, that the rest of the world is terrible and worse off than them.
I’m actually surprised that PRK gymnasts are even allowed out of the country.
Gymbot- yes of course it’s because she’s from North Korea. Not only are they taught that outsiders are evil, many of them live their entire lives in prison/labor camps. Children are born into them and never leave. Many aren’t allowed to have relationships with their family. Love and trust is something many will never know. I’ve heard the country described as a giant death camp. They are prisoners, they just don’t know it.
Agree with your surprise that they are allowed to travel. Sad .
I agree. .8 in difference in difficulty – too big a gap for Biles to overcome, especially with Hong having no huge mistakes (unlike QF).
Hong has really cleaned up her Amanar – good height, great form (no leg separation at all during the 2 1/2 twists), just that step forward on the landing. Deserved score. The Cheng was pretty meh, but it didn’t really get a high e-score either (just a 9.0), so score’s still pretty fair.
Yes simone totally needs a stronger second vault. If skinner had her Amanar clean she would, beat simone on SV alone also. Its sad but Im glad it seems Marta finally gets that we dont need to push a ton of difficulty out mid quad because its too hard on the girls. I think Simone and Kyla both need a lot of rest after this, let simone finish recovering her shoulder and let others take their World Cup slots. Id love to see nichols and or skinner of flatley compete stuttgart. And then let bailie key have scam as her coming out party. We have two delegation spots in all of those meets.
I hate to see how “unsportsmanlike” (not sure if that is the correct word in this situation) the chinese girls are.
Huang Huidan started crying when she was beat by her Yao Jinnan, and (at least the cameras didnt show it) they didn’t congratulate each other.
Made me think of London when Sui Lu was crying and sulking non-stop when she realised she was beaten by Deng Linlin.
I realise they have enormous pressure on them and are emotionally quite immature, but it’s still sad to see teammates who should support each other react this way.
When mentioned that started crying after her routine, she explained that she was moved and it was the adrenaline when the tears first came down. However, when she moved from first to second, she was sad because she felt “不甘心” it’s a tricky thing to translate, it’s that feeling when you tried your best and did really well but fell just a little short and you can’t reconcile with it.
Nannan was right behind her, and when asked, she said she’s “not comfortable” with her win. She said “Dandan performed better than me, so when I saw her cry… I don’t know,” She said there’s a lot of mixed feelings because “for the past few years, I keep having issues with my training” hinting at her multiple injuries.
A nice end to Worlds. Good competition. Smiles from Musty!
Bruno talking about execution vs difficulty. Wonder if he’s got one particular gymnast in mind when he’s saying this? Says the scoring system could be overhauled. Why does he keep getting re – elected? Seems like all he does is criticize the system he put in place.
I am actually a little sad for Mykayla on floor. She missed bronze by such a small margin. At the same time I’m glad execution won over difficulty. And after Musty having a disappointing AA I’m happy to see her with medals on beam and floor. Also, straight from the horses mouth Kyla knows her lack of difficulty is hurting her and she wants to add more to get D score. Yay!!!
Glad she said she wants to raise her D score becuse I think she can be a contender the rest of the quad if she does. She mentioned raising her bar D score…isn’t that already her highest event? I wish she would add in some more difficult turns on beam and floor.
Ross isn’t that great at spins. She could bring back her in-bar stalder work. Her best bet is probably to add connections. And if she could just have better flow on beam she would gain substantially on the e score.
