Komeback Katelyn?

Look who is back in the gym (Thanks Brittany for the info)

Now don’t get too excited just yet this could be for College and she needs to get in shape but maybe just maybe we will have some real competition for next season even if it is from a Woga-ette which we all know means OVERSCORING

This is from Katelyn Instagram.

In celebration of this crazy sport that I can’t even begin to describe. Getting back has been one long, hard journey, but it feels good to be back. #HappyNationalGymnasticsDay

P.S.- I know how to spell comeback. This is a play on words πŸ™‚

Russia changes team again. This blog is all kinds of awesome for news on Russia in English. (Thanks Ilanchik20)

This video seems to be all over Gymternet. Crazy how she can stir this much attention. I heard she is training with Laurent now–maybe it’ll be good for her! She wouldn’t need this hard if a skill for college so maybe she decided to try elite one more time? Fingers crossed. I’ve always liked her, it wasn’t her fault, she was training with Valeri thus the over scoring, Well only partially her fault lol

On another note, Russians changed their team again lol. Can Marta do this too? And at the left replace Desch with Brenna lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      Who did Russia replace?

Katelyn is at least a nice kid but she will still get the Woga overscore. Just wait.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Afan is out which she wasn’t ready in the first place, kind of stupid to even suggest she is ready when she hasn’t even gone to the selection camp lol. They put Fedorova in. Sounds like they’ll decide in China.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Thank you. Russia is doomed. I don’t even think Aliya can save them this time

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Unless Aliya can perform her routines three times on each apparatus and count as three people lol Russia better pray U.S falls all over which if Desch ends up competing, it’s possible.

Plus I saw a tweet from Simone about 4 more workouts before China so Marta still has 4 more days in the U.S and podium training to injure someone, ugh.

Next year plz come. It’s going to be way better with the new seniors.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Where is Nationals and worlds next year?

LOL about Aliya performing 3 times each.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Let Aliya perform 3 times and do 3 different beam routines (which she already did at Russian Cup anyways lol) and perhaps Russian will be good. Hahaha.

I think next Nationals are in Indiana and Worlds are in Glassgow, UK. I’ve got tons of family in UK, maybe I should go visit them next year.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Sounds like a good time for a visit:)

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Nationals and worlds are in dallas next year. Because they are erecting a statue in Nastias honor in dallas. They want everyone to come worship it.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

LOL Worlds in not in Dallas next eyar:)

I am not sure but wasn’t the American Cup in Dallas a year or 2 ago and it flopped?

  2. Exgymgurl Says:

If Aliya counts as three people can we have simone vault twice? And compete floor twice? Its like a dream come true that Katelyn Ohashi is doing that pass on beam again, thats not ncaa difficulty… Thats elite difficulty. Camp with Aly, McKayla, gabby and Katelyn all back next month should,be incredible. The road to rio starts after this crappy worlds team. Im way more excited about October camp….post worlds….

    • gymtruthteller Says:

That is an elite move. Too bad its on a level 3 beam:)

I am just trying to stop people from getting ahead of themselves.

No we cannot use Simone 3 times on vault. We are average out the playing field here not stop teams from quitting.

    • Katie Says:

I doubt think Katelyn will be at the next camp. I think she just started getting serious again. And hopefully training with Laurent will prevent future shoulder injuries and he won’t make her swing bars Nastia-style which Katelyn obviously did not have the shoulder flexibility for. And training skills like that makes me believe she is pushing for elite and not ncaa yet.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Katie. If Im Marta I want to see progress, so I bring Katelyn to kamp. And gabby and Aly. And Maroney. I would even bring Lexie. If for no other reason than to get them all back on the same page. We are way past mid-quad. Serious preparation for Rio starts as soon as the rag tag fugitive leftovers. ( plus Simone and Kyla) get back from worlds. Thats one team, we are only 19 months away from rio. Katelyn needs to show where she is at and get back into the fold. They all need to see where they are at and where they need to be. I bring everyone rio eligible regardless of injury to the next camp. Maggie, Rachel gowey, Laurie Hernandez, bailie key Peyton, everyone rio eligible. And I tell them from this group will come the five we take to rio. I would not bring any non age eligible Jrs, this would be the foundation camp where Id be all decide now if you are serious or not. Because if you just want NCAA, dont waste our time.

      • Katie Says:

@exgymgurl- I hear you, and I would love to see Katelyn at October camp. Maybe she has been sortof secretly training all of her routines for months and can at least show connections and passes. You are right in that Martha doesn’t like videos being released without her stamp of approval. But right now it looks like she is just starting to get back into elite shape. The only thing we can see is the video she has posted of one series on a low beam. I think right now she is dipping her toe in the pond. Maybe she sees that her specialty (beam) is where they are lacking and she is still a potential medalist. Plus she has floor where she would be leadoff. And maybe even bars. Ohashi was never a ub/bb specialist. She was beam/floor then bars. Hopefully Laurent “gets” it.

      • Dee Says:

I believe she had a second video a few months ago where she does a arial front walkover on that same low beam and the caption was something like “look who is back”? I think she has been working on skills for a while but I’m not sure if she is camp ready for next month? I agree with you Katie that she looks like she is just now getting back into elite shape. Unless these videos are old and she is actually in better shape than she is letting on, who knows.

I have a hard time with comebacks after 2012. I hope the girls that want to come back this quad actually DO IT and not partake in the half-assery that was most of the 2012 season. I hope as we get close to Rio we see some actual comebacks mixed with some new faces, that’s when it could get interesting.

  3. Exgymgurl Says:

Id do just about anything to avoid us competing a one arm Cheng on vault at worlds. Its just gross

    • Tortuga Says:

Amen sister. Next year will be so excited with the mix of fierce five and promising new seniors. I’m not getting too excited about katelyn yet because this is a floor beam and she may just be able to do that skill because she competed it for so long, it’s probably close to second nature for her. Plus we have no idea about her stamina which is the biggest factor after difficulty. Seeing that she moved to public school and has a boyfriend I really don’t think I’m banking on her coming back to elite. But dreaming about it is nice. I always liked her.

  4. Exgymgurl Says:

Valentina may have to scrape out grishina

  5. mim Says:

I was happy enough thinking Katelyn was getting in shape for college (wasn’t there some talk she was so injured and worn out even college seemed like a huge goal?). I really like this kid and would be thrilled if she even made it to NCAA and didn’t come back to elite but how exciting if she does!

  6. JAS4 Says:

I wonder how Katelyn is looking on the other events maybe she will post more video soon

    • Exgymgurl Says:

They arent really supposed to post muchas members of the national team. Thats whats interesting. Shes not on the natl team. Im sure Marta has all her video. She could be the hip pocket WOGA chick that makes rio…

  7. sanitynmotion Says:

Well if she’s practicing those skills I would have to hope she has her eyes set on elite and not just college yet…

    • JAS4 Says:

Maybe her goal was originally to get skills back for college but once she started training she was able to get some elite skills back so maybe she will try elite again.

      • Katie Says:

I could see that. I don’t even want to get into the whole scott bergman/anna liukin drama, but it just seemed like Katelyn needed a break and maybe when she started coming back for college she realized she still had the itch for elite.

      • Gymbee Says:

Please get into it: what was the drama with Anna Liukin?

      • Katie Says:

Nothing weird. What I heard was that Katelyn was nursing her shoulder injury summer of 2013 and not really doing anything but was still very focused on elite and coming back for 2014. But Valeri wanted to focus on TOPS (and I have actually heard really good and positive things with how he is running the program) so he had Anna put out the rumors that Katelyn was dropping to Level 10. And the first person she told was Scott and that’s how the whole thing started. So, initially, when Katelyn was asked if she was dropping down to Level 10 in interviews and she would answer that she had no clue where that came from, it’s because she really didn’t have a clue. Then as her injury dragged on, she started to get a regular teenage life. Last I heard, she was in the gym just trying to get skills back so she could hopefully compete NCAA. But now, with this skill (and I know it’s only one skill) it looks like she may be pushing for elite again. But anyways, don’t buy Anna Liukin’s whole “Oh, I’m just Nastia’s mom and cheerleader” thing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Why should we buy cheerleader mom?

Why would cheerleader mom start rumors about Katelyn ?

Anna Liukin told Bregman and he leaked the rumors I have known but I am curious to the reasoning of lying about Katelyn?

I just don’t understand why she would do that? Did she think she was helping hubby out?

      • Katie Says:

I think she was trying to help him out so he wouldn’t look like a jerk in the gym world. Valeri was only coaching Katelyn. She was injured. He has been been working his way up usag for awhile. He had one foot out the door while coaching Katelyn in 2013. When she got injured, I think the Liukin’s didn’t want it to look like he left her, But he wanted the TOPS program and didn’t want to be a full time personal coach to Katelyn anymore. She basically got injured at the perfect time for Valeri and that’s when they put the word out.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That makes sense. Liukin wants Marta’s role one day and if he looks like a jerk that will never happen. Look what he did to Wofford when it charge of a child

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Totally makes sense. Anna liukin is a total bitch. He had to drop Katelyn to take on tops…… Maybe the whole thing is good. For Katelyn, because she has a life. She looks happy and not burnt out and pissed like she did at scam 2013 and she now has a coach that actually got two WOGA people on the same world team. Last WOGA coach to do that was marchenko in 2003. The Liukins are all about themselves. They could give a shit less about Bross, wofford, or anyone besides Nastia.

      • Tortuga Says:

I’ve always felt the Liukins were only looking out for Nastia. Yes it is their daughter but have some dignity in your job for your other athletes. Having Bross and Nastia go for the same spot ,we all knew how that would pan out. I think Marchenko was a more successful coach than Valeri. He had a world gold medalist with Hollie VIse and an Olympic All Around champ with Carly. However people seem to think Valerie is the superior one with one Olympic champ (his own daughter) then breaking pretty much any other gymnast he’s had, I just don’t get it. And I did feel like he didn’t care that he was leaving Katelyn when she got injured, plus Nastia was done so why would he care? But I think it worked out better for her. She hated elite with Valerie so maybe she will enjoy it again with Laurent.

  8. sanitynmotion Says:

Just realized my comment was already basically said by everyone else… That’s what I get for not reading the comments before posting, my bad…

So worlds this year looks to be boring… Am I right? All the teams waiting for the better juniors to age up.

  9. sainabou nyang Says:

My wish is for every single elite gymnast that was injured this year-Lexie, Maggie, Rachel, Maroney, Peyton, hell even Polina to reporrt to January camp in such amazing shape with new competitve routines. To add too that mix lets include returning Olympians Aly and Gabby. I want 2015 to be fierce competition with people fighting for international spots because right now its kind of dull.

We will have to get through this worlds and say a prayer that no one falls and ends up on Martas blacklist.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

I think this starts sooner than January, and its right after worlds this year.

      • Tortuga Says:

Reading all these aspirations are helping me get through these dark boring times. I can’t wait for worlds to be over. One positive thing about worlds is that won’t Simone be the first US gymnast to win the aa two years in a row since Shannon? Not that I want that taken away from Shannon but I will be happy for Simone.

      • Dee Says:

Yea Simone would be the first since Shannon to do that. That’s sort of the only reason why I am watching, also, because I think it would be exciting to see a US gymnast win two Word AA’s back to back again. I’m sort of hoping she wins all three World AA’s just so women’s artistic can have a “Kohei” of sorts this quad…I honestly think she has a shot.

  10. Ilanchik20 Says:

Aly great here. Still cannot understand why Marta didn’t push her to come back. But pacing def better for Aly long term.

  11. JAS4 Says:

    Asian games

  12. Melanie Says:

I hope that Katelyn has gotten a chance to take a good long break, live a normal life, and figure out what she wants to do. I think a lot of us watched her break in front of our eyes – her bars were getting worse and worse, and we all knew that Valeri was straining her shoulders unnecessarily. Same thing happened with Bross and the vaults/Patterson dismounts. If she truly wants to go elite again, I hope she has a much better time with Laurent. She is simply too talented to go to waste.

What happened with Rodionova? Why is she not an option for this Russian Worlds team? I don’t remember hearing that she was injured, so I’m wondering if she’s been blacklisted by the Rodionenkos. Weird, considering she was pushed onto the last Worlds team.

I think gymfans across the world are just hunkering down waiting for a better crop next year – for veterans to return, for injured athletes to heal, and for juniors to move up.

    • Gymbee Says:

I wonder, had Marchenko coached Bross and Ohashi instead, whether they’d have been healthy.

      • Melanie Says:

Very good question. Bross almost seemed self-destructive, and Valeri certainly didn’t protect her from herself, but Ohashi is a completely different story.

      • Gymbee Says:

I think Marchenko just seemed like a more supportive coach than Liukin, so I reckon Bross would have been more stable under his tutelage.
Ohashi would have been paced better and not treated like Nastia 2.0.

People on Facebook are asking “where’s Gabby??” to photos USAG post of girls training at Worlds. I have to hope it’s a joke at this point haha!

      • Melanie Says:

You’re probably right. It’s just crazy to me that Bross STILL hasn’t announced her retirement – it’s like she can’t imagine what her life will be like without the sport. Poor girl has no identity aside from gymnastics. At least Ohashi seems to have escaped Liukin’s stranglehold with few scars. Probably because he gave up on her early enough in her career.

      • Gymbee Says:

I know Melanie, I just get sad when I think of Bross. It’s so important for athletes to have something else besides gym, just something to pull focus when career is over. She doesn’t seem like she has anything, but what do I know.

      • Tortuga Says:

I think it’s obvious Bross is done. I don’t think it’s necessary that she have a formal announcement. That might just bring up more pain. And I don’t want to to sound rude but it’s not like she was an Olympian like Jordyn, Alicia or Shawn. I could see why people were bothering them so much. They’re more in the public eye.

  13. Ilanchik20 Says:

Didn’t we talk about this at some point? Looks like Jordyn is the only Fierce Five who hasn’t been drug tested in a year.

    • Dee Says:

I don’t remember hearing that before. I wonder if Jordyn is still training. Haven’t heard anything about her in a while.

    • GymAnon Says:

Lauren Hopkins mentioned on her Tumblr a while back that Jordyn is no longer in the drug-testing pool. doubt Jordyn will come back to elite at this point, and given the O’Bannon ruling she won’t be able to compete for the Bruins. the Geddert thing happened at the worst time for her comeback tbh. but I hope she’s enjoying college life!

      • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

I really, really wish Jo was coming back because I love her, I love her gymnastics, and I would REALLY love to see her beat Gabby again at *something* (NOT a Gabby fan). But, from her Instagram, she looks like she is having a great time in college, going out and doing fun college sophomore stuff and being 19. Plus, I think she’s roommates with Peng-Peng? That must make for an interesting experience! And if she is done with gym, I’m glad she went out with an Olympic gold and being a 100% class act and team player rather than half-assing a comeback and face planting a la Nastia.

  14. gymbot Says:

Awhile ago on this blog, we discussed the routines of PRK’s Kim Un Hyang and Vietnam’s Thi Ha Thanh Phan on the balance beam at Osijek. They repeated 1-2 again, this time with Un Hyang earning gold. They beat Shang Chunsong and Bai Yawen in the final, both who had problems. Here are their old routines from Osijek.

I would bet bmbul or chinesegym1 youtube channels will have their routines up at some point later today. Anyway, I think both have great style and I wonder if either can make the final at Worlds.

    • Melanie Says:

If there’s a silver lining to the weakness of the Big 4 teams this year, it’s that I hope a lot of new gymnasts will make the EFs. Like these girls! I love how confident Kim Un Hyang is on the beam – so surefooted. I’d really like to see some variety on the podium this year. At least after Simone and Kyla have established their placements. πŸ™‚

      • gymbot Says:

I don’t know if they will make it to the beam finals. Historically beam is a big four love fest and there are several potential beam finalists from each team. China could qualify Shang, Yao, Chen, Huang or Bai (all five would have to fall to not see a Chinese athlete in the beam final). Russia has Kharenkova and Mustafina, USA will have Biles, Ross, Baumann and perhaps even Kocian sorting a spot for beam final, and Romania has Iordache, Munteanu and Stanila with strong routines.

I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for these two, Black and Lopez.

    • gymbot Says:

Above is Phan’s beam, it should have gotten a higher score. Only 8.233 in E.

    • gymbot Says:

Features a layout full for the win over Phan. Obvious form errors on the layout full and switch ring leap, that latter she did not get credit for.

      • gymbot Says:

LoL I suck at technology. Anyway, Hyang’s beam is on the same channel as the above video – and I don’t want to risk posting another playlist.

  15. Ilanchik20 Says:

Another one handed Cheng (sort of). This time by a Russian — Alla Sosnitsksya. Saw this on tumbler. Supposedly right before Ruasians left for World’s. Could make things more interesting.

  16. onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Random, semi-related question (seems to be my specialty…). I keep reading about five juniors moving up to senior next year that are really promising, but I don’t know who these five are. Anybody know?

    • Ilanchik20 Says:

Bailey, Nia, Alexis. These 3 will be awesome to watch! I’m not sure who the other 2 would be. Norah, Laurie, Jazzy, Regan, Emily, Sydney SJ, etc. don’t turn senior until 2016 I think.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Nia is overrated. Her floor is explosive when she hits but I do not get the hype. We are two years away and marta loves her buy I do not love any gymnast right now. All of them have major issues. At this point we look for improvement and I honestly haven’t seen anyone jump out. It’s Bailey and Laurie and some seniors at this point.

  17. Uglyfatkid Says:

Does anyone have any info about the TV coverage for worlds. Channels? Live broadcast? Etc.

I can’t seem to find anything about it. I know Universal Sports (US) carried everything last year, but I am not sure what’s happening this year. I can purchase US from Directv, but I don’t want to do it if they aren’t showing it this year.

If anyone has any info, I’d be forever grateful if you’d bail me out. πŸ™‚

  18. Ilanchik20 Says:

Not the leo I wish she was wearing lol but Kaitlyn is starting to look much more in shape.
