While I was Sleeping…. Gymnastics happened

Romanian Nationals took place and look, my girl Andreea Iridon STAYED on the Uneven bars. Sorry this just made my day. Look at this kid keep her legs together and hit her handstands. She’s even becoming a beamer. She turns senior next year people, watch out.

Iridon looks great. Munteanu had a great day, too, with a lovely beam routine. Her toepoint makes me happy.

What, oh what, is happening when Mykayla Skinner wins an AA comp?

  2. sanitynmotion Says:

I was going to say the same thing…Skinner on top for floor too. What a travesty. She’ll go home and think she’s improved and won’t work on her form issues now with this ill-begotten confidence.

This tells me that there are no deductions for lack of artistry/form on floor, no matter what that code says.

    • Melanie Says:

Ugh, we’ll have to see more of her smug face. My only respite is that I think she’ll burn out by Rio. Or just be blown out of the water by juniors.

    • Dee Says:

I can’t, and won’t, get on the skinner bandwagon. I am dreading the fact that everyone else has basically died already and she will probably be on the world team by default.

      • Tortuga Says:

I feel the same way. I cringe at the form and bad habits like have you noticed on all her landings she swings her arms down really fast or her long awkward prep before her beam dismount? Not terrible mistakes but not aesthetically pleasing at all.

  3. Kyz Says:

Ahhh both those bar routine videos make me smile! Skinner makes me cringe.

  4. JAS4 Says:

Iridon could really help Romania out on bars when she turns senior especially if she can upgrade some as well. (Also Iridon please don’t break!)

  5. onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

    Just…no comment on Skinner.
Iridon is looking awesome! I’m almost shocked to see a really good Romanian bar worker…
Is Vika not doing all-around anymore?

    • Laura Says:

Vika is injured (..nursing her ankle, I believe). If she shows readiness on vault, there is a good chance we will see her compete at the worlds. No AA this year due to her injury, although I’m hopeful if she gets healthy she will be back in the AA.

Skinner – yes, terrible form and presentation, but very gutsy skills. It’s difficult to admire a code that promotes difficulty over execution, but you still have to admire Skinner for her ability to perform those skills. Although, I believe she should get deducted more for poor execution so that difficulty without proper execution doesn’t become “the new normal” and we lose the artistry in gymnastics.

      • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Oh I agree, her skills are off the hook, but it gets lost in BSD form. This code is definitely good for her. I kinda think they should revise it so that instead of just an execution penalty, they should only give partial credit for C, D, E skills that aren’t performed properly. Maybe. Odk.
I’m glad Vika’s not out! I was starting to get Wieber vibes about her coming up in this quad!

      • gymbot Says:

They do give partial credit for some skills, but none of her skills are in danger of receiving partial credit.

  6. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Has anybody heard any scoop on what is going on with Victoria Moors? I don’t think she’s injured so is she having a mental breakdown or something? She wasn’t named to Canada’s world team either. So much hype…..

    • gymbot Says:

This bums me out a lot. I really liked Moors and she is definitely needed on the Canadian team. I’m not sure Black and Onyshko can carry this team to TF

    • Katie Says:

Someone on tumblr posted something (as anon) that her friend’s dad worked for cbc that covered panams and that Moors was sent home because she went out very late at night, she had had a bad attitude for awhile, and she wasn’t in great physical shape. The going out thing was the last straw for Canada so they told her to go home, clear her head, and think about what she wants to do. CBC agreed not to report it.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It would not surprise me. She always seemed to love the attention more than anything.

If it is true that Bravo to Canada for not letting her be a spoiled brat.

      • byrdisthewyrd Says:

Ah ha, thanks for the update Katie. And I agree, good for Canada. Maybe it’ll be a wake up call for her. Or maybe she just doesn’t care.

    • Dee Says:

If that tumblr story is true it makes sense. Her twitter hasn’t had anything gymnastics in a while.

      • Aerial Says:

Gymnastics Canada was asked in an interview what Moors status is. Their response: “No comment.” Very telling, when they could have said she was taking a break, injured, etc.

It’s too bad, she was a special gymnast, and great for Canada, but clearly things are over, at least for now.

For the past year or more I’d noticed on Twitter she’s part of a group of former/in limbo gymnasts that publically discuss food and lament body issues frequently… Ohashi included. This screams problems and a need for attention, bigtime.

      • Dee Says:

Yes! I noticed the body stuff, too. I remember a “thigh gap” tweet of some kind.

“No comment” is telling. Makes me sad bc I did very much like her gymnastics, but no one can blame her if she’s ready to move on or needs a break. Just hope it wasn’t done in a way that keeps her from returning if she wants to.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

There is more to it then that because she was sent home from a meet like a month and a half ago. There is being done and there is getting an assigment
and being too lazy to train hard.

      • Dee Says:

She was sent home from pan ams and another meet? If that’s the case then oh my.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She was sent home from one meet and not named to the other.

  7. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Okay I know somebody posted the last couple of seconds of Nabieva’s floor routine but seriously, the whole routine is hilarious. Clearly her heart is no longer in it but I can’t stop laughing. She actually takes care of a butt wedgie in the middle of her routine. This girl is entertaining to say the least! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2yQ37oUcD8

    Aly looks fantastic!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I just read about this happening in the Sunday paper. I am a little late to the game:)

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Ok can I just say I just watched night 2 of nationals and Gabby acts like she’s BETTER this time around then she was last time, and she hasn’t even competed yet. I don’t know how Aly didn’t roll her eyes or something when Gabby said that in her interview.

She barely is back in the gym and she actually thinks she’s going to come back a better gymnast, and without Chow to boot? What a tool. She is way too overconfident. I can’t wait ’til rubber meets the road and she has to prove herself.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Gabby right now is working for nothing. The earliest she will compete and thats a HUGE if is if she gets her AA back by the American Cup in March so that means she is training full time with no goal for the minimum 6 months and lets be honest here that is a huge leap. In reality she is practicing for next August. Lets see her stay in the gym that long with out any reason or distractions.

From what I have read Gabby is only at this gym because they offered to coach her. She didn’t go to them they went to her and told her to try it out.
Now this isn’t official info its stuff I have read from other people

  10. sarahrdh Says:

Was the Russia cup held in a high school gymnasium??

Nice bar routine by Komova, I think I saw a leg separation on that last giant….idk if it’s the angle of the video but hard to tell if she quite hits her handstands?? She almost looks a tad piked….idk maybe I’m just a bitch. But overall I love watching European countries in bars. Very pretty, long, lean lines. I like Komova. Mustafina had to win me over, she’s always looks so bitchy, but I have decided she’s ok in my book. I’m sure she’ll rest easier knowing that. 😉

    • sanitynmotion Says:

She does do a lot more leg separations since she got taller. Her giants (unfortunately) are starting to look like Nastia’s used to. But she still has great flight between the bars.

I’ve always loved Musty. For whatever reason her “bitch face” doesn’t get to me because it’s literally bad-ass and mostly directed to herself and her routines, not to other people. You can tell the way her teammates interact with her that she’s well liked on the team. Whereas Nastia on the other hand…her bitch-face usually showed up when she lost, and it was directed at whoever beat her at the time.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She’s taller now so she probably is piked. I forget who it is but someone else used to pike their freaking handstands and I always wondered if that was a deduction but I forget who it was.
