    Rough day.

But here is Shawn’s bucket challenge. This is the first time I see her in some thing non-black in forever. She actually looks decent.

And here it is…. @malloryervin haha classic! Using ceramic bowls our #icebucketchallenge

She looks to be in much better shape than those candid pictures from The Apprentice. Good for her.

  3. sanitynmotion Says:

Her hair is long too. Not like that matters.

I just love Chow. You can tell he really appreciates his athletes. Cute video of him talking about the P&G’s and Rachel Gowey’s injury.

  5. lovelucas Says:

Shawn looks terrific. Looks slimmer and even younger. Cool that they actually donated $. Not sure all participants do.

  6. JAS4 Says:

I agree she looks much better. I think a lot of times she makes herself look bigger than she is because she wears baggy clothes.

    Tonight was much better. #napnation

    Found a few things:

Full Twist had Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu compare gymnastics of today with the 90s. Shannon is very positive and diplomatic. Dom? Well…
(The comment by Lily-last one-made me snort.)

Speaking of Dom, a Tumblr user named decencybedamned quipped this about the above article:

Last but not least, this gif. Rather appropriate, no?

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree with DM about the two per country rule. I’m glad she is real about her viewpoints, but it’s a bit like she’s too focused on playing the role of “negative Nancy” here.

The underlying ironic thing is that between these two gymnasts, Shannon was the perfect epitome of combining artistry with difficulty whereas DM is more of the “powerhouse” type – with not the best form and awful artistry on floor.

Sometimes though I just wish Shannon would have a definite opinion, dang it. She totally beats around the bush and is just like “oh well! It’s just a change! Gotta accept all rules! Yay! I love watching tricks!” I dunno – I am a HUGE Miller fan but sometimes I have the urge to slap her. Just be real for once. Nobody’s that peppy all the time. Or go work for Disneyland…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

In 93 and 94 there was a 2 per Country rule for Worlds. They also didn’t do compulsories during those 2 individual worlds and competed two sets of optionals. Shannon pretty much won her 2 world titles with todays rules.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Shannon wins no matter what in my book. I just wish that it wasn’t 2 per country today because the other countries are so weak – so what we get is like 5-6 “good” gymnasts that could potentially go for the title plus 20 totally weak gymnasts that the broadcast skips over anyways. I pretty much don’t see a point to it – but at the same time as it applies to Jordyn her damn stupid coach knew the rules going in and should have adjusted her beam set so she didn’t get screwed. But that’s all in the past now.

I honestly wish they’d do away with 3 up 3 count (I like to see more routines) more than anything, which say if it were 4 up 3 count, or 5 up, 3 count…it would still put emphasis on the AA gymnasts making the Olympic team. I liked it back in the days where the specialists could not be specialists. In women’s gymnastics there are only 4 apparatuses so I feel like being a specialist should be kind of frowned upon (I think Marta frowns upon it anyways unless your name is Nastia Liukin).

I also like the idea of bringing back compulsories (again, more routines and it really does separate the best from the rest) and use that more or less to determine the “artistic” portion of the sport. The optionals can then go back to “trick” mode/what we have today. Maybe grade compulsories on the perfect “10” and there you have it – the best of both worlds, haha.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I liked compulsories because it helped me become a better gym fan but the judges fixed those too. Go watch Dawes’s beam compulsories and then watch Shannon and tell me how they only found 3 tenths difference. This sport is a fraud

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know…it’s like…don’t even get me started. I’m sure if compulsories were still around they’d still have found a way for Douglas to beat Komova.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Now that would be funny to see people

  9. Case Says:

Not going the greatest for us either. I can’t believe this team is in danger of missing the playoffs with this rotation. #$%*&!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

My team has the third worst record in the east. I have to laugh about it or I just might kill someone.

I think you guys will be fine. Should get the wild card over Seattle. Heard about Sanchez that sucks.

I despise KC from the Zack Grienke days. They owned us but all they would do is whine when we beat them and they started
trouble every single time. Grienke is a punk but I guess that means I should be hating the Dodgers

I realize people hate the Red Sox because they win but besides Papi admiring his homers this team pretty much never says anything controversial yet everyone hates us.

Baltimore is the reason the Red Sox didn’t win the division for like 8 straight years and they hate us more than anyone. All of their players run their mouths and they pretty much own us too. I guess the fact we take over their park with our fans every year is kind of annoying to them but honestly just shut up Baltimore. If you had any real fans your park would be filled all the time so be thankful Yankee and Boston fans travel and buy tickets or you wouldn’t be able to afford any players.

Adam Jones is my least favorite player in MLB today. I hate him and if the Red Sox ever go out and sign him I won’t go to another game during his time in Boston. I hate him that much. He is such a punk.

      Does Detroit have a ‘rival”?

The media still considers the Yankees our rival but they aren’t. Sox fans hate Baltimore and Tampa more than we hate the Yankees and while I will never root for a NY team if they win it actually puts pressure on the Red Sox to up the anti so I don’t even hate them anymore when they win ( I still hate them:) I still want them to lose but the last time the Yankees won a world series the Red Sox went out and got Crawford and Gonzalez and we turned trading them into another world series. Thanks for that Magic Johnson:)

Ratings for the playoffs should be interesting this year if the Sox and Yankees are out of it. Hate us if you will be we bring in the ratings. With the way MLB has screwed the Red Sox this year I hope the ratings suck and they lose money.

We have a better road record than home record this year. Explains my record at Fenway this year (4-3)

    • Case Says:

I’m not so sure GTT. I hope you are right about the wildcard but the stars are not aligning in our favor. Sanchez hurt (maybe done for year), Verlander hurt (but pitching anyways which isn’t helping us much), Soria hurt, Miggy hurt (but playing anyways because he’s a trooper but defintely not at 100%). Our bullpen is a shit storm and has been all season because Joe Nathan forgot he’s not playing for the Twins anymore.

Can the Royals really be this good? I think they are playing out of their minds but if they don’t come back to earth soon they will run away with the division.

Detroit doesn’t really have a ‘rival’ per se. For awhile in the postseason it was St. Louis but that’s more of a ‘two storied franchises meeting up’ kind of deal. The Indians are probably the closest we have to an AL rival. Please let me carry on the illusion that Boston and NYY are epic rivals. It’s such a fun story for the rest of us. I don’t know anyone that hates Boston on my end. The Red Sox are probably my second favorite MLB team and have been since I was a kid. I also have a soft spot for the Cubs….cause they have been bad so long. I did have a minor beef with bullpen cop for cheering instead of helping Torii up last year, but your relief pitchers came through on that one so I’ll let it ride. Lol.

I do share your disdain for Tampa. The Tampa FOX TV station put out some tasteless tweet about Detroit after we traded for Price. A town that only draws 5,000 fans per game should really shut up about baseball in general.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

In our bullpen cops defense he is not allowed to touch a player for any reason. He is supposed to stay out of it unless it involves a fan or the safety of the player from a fan. lol

I heard what Tampa did in that tweet but Detroit had the best response so you won that round. God I hate Tampa.

We had out own little twitter fight with Tampa. We won that round too:)

I forgot about Verlanders injury. KC is benefitting from all the injuries to not only your team but how badly so many of the staples in the sport have been this year. They will disappear eventually. So far of all the teams in the run for the playoffs only Baltimore and the Yankees are the ones I despise. I would rather the Yankees win then Baltimore. That is how obnoxious they have been over the years. I know Boston isn’t a saint and the fans can be jerks but Baltimore, urgh their 5 fans need to go away.

Love Miggy. He’s a work horse I hope this isn’t the year they give Trout. They have been itching to do that for years.

I hate the Yankees don’t get me wrong but that rivalry is pretty boring here in Boston. At least for us. Once we play them in the playoffs again that will change I am sure.

  10. Melanie Says:

Mustafina leads day one of Russian Championships – looking pretty good, but with majorly overscored routines. 14.6 on beam with a fall? Komova’s in third on bars, and that’s all she competed. I don’t know if she’ll get a ticket to Worlds with a third-place bars routine. But I still love her. Paseka put an Amanar to her feet, but it still looks pretty bad. Low, flat, and uncontrolled landing. Oh, and they gave Kharenkova a 16.2 on beam. What a joke.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Overscoring at Nationals? That almost never happens:) a 14.6 with a fall. Damn I meant to see what Simone got on day 2 with the fall and forgot.

      • Melanie Says:

Oh, I know, all the domestic meets worldwide are overscored, except the Chinese, but it annoys me when people call out the American meets alone as being overscored. Clearly the Russians are getting very inflated scores. Mustafina shouldn’t have even had to compete.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

LOL It was a 14.600 and she got full value for everything.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Domestic scoring is so crazy this year, especially on beam and bars! There is no way Kharkenkova should get a 16.2, Biles a 15.7, and Mustafina and Biiles 14.6s on beam with falls. Aliya’s new skills/connections look gorgeous on beam besides the fall. However, she should be resting instead of competing IMO. Valentina said that Aliya wouldn’t have to compete at Russian Cup, since she already qualified to Worlds through Euros, but Valentina is a gigantic liar. Komova looks great on bars besides those giants. She got so tall, and her leg keeps hitting the low bar. She really needs to learn how to pike like Kyla instead of bending her legs. Glad that Paskea was given appropriate scores for her vaults. This is the first time her amanar was judged correctly (she was only given a 14.6, I think). Looks like Aliya will be able to do AA at Worlds, which is great for Russia.

      • H Says:

Does anyone know what Aliya’s d-score (beam) is?

      • Case Says:

National scoring is a joke across the board. It does a disservice to all the gymnasts.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

I made a YouTube video depicting her d-score. Hope this helps. Her full potential is 6.8, but she was only given a 6.4, since she lost .4 in CV from falling on her Switch 1/2-Onodi-Side Aerial.

      • Melanie Says:

There were rumors that she was going to connect the two series together, which would put her routine over 7.0, but there’s no way she’ll make all those connections in competition. I don’t think I would have given her the Arabian- jump series combo to be honest.

      • H Says:

        Thank you Kaley. Brilliant!

      • gymbot Says:

I’m not sure how Mustafina would get above 7 even if she connects all the skills she has shown over this week (also it’s crazy how many routines she can throw), I think 6.8 is the max for double turn+turn; arabian; 1/2 switch+onodi+side aerial+leap; front aerial x2+bhs; switch ring leap; double back dismount.

I’m curious if her front aerial x2+bhs and other variations are of that pass are only when she misses a potentially longer string. She could get the same connection if she hits 1/2 switch+onodi+side aerial+front aerial+leap (by linking the side aerial to front aerial she’d get the SB bonus of the front aerial series and the D+D CV – so by hitting that CV she could take out a second front aerial or any variation of fwd/bwd B elements).

      • gymbot Says:

@ Kaley – there is no SB for mixed combinations, so arabian+leap series is only CV 0.1 for arabian+leap.

        Similarly, the 1/2 switch+onodi+side aerial is worth 0.3 total – D+D mixed 0.2, C/D+D w/o rebound 0.1.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Thank you @gymbot!🙂 I thought I was doing something wrong. I thought that it was 0.4 since she was getting that for her Switch Half-Onodi- Double Turn, but You’re right since she was getting D+D mixed x2. I’ll change this to 6.6. Her highest routine was at 6.8 in 2011, I think.

      • gymbot Says:

She could have 6.8 at Worlds. I wouldn’t put anything past her, she’s a great competitor. I’m wondering if she’ll have the difficulty to match or even surpass Biles. It would be a challenge for her, but it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibilities considering how much she instantly upgraded before Antwerp.

It would certainly make things interesting if she shows up to Nanning with an upgraded bars, this beam routine and a few adjustments to her floor. She would definitely pressure Biles at least.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Vika finally brought her A-game on bars at Russian Cup!🙂 She was scoring 14.7s and 14.4s because she was missing a bunch of handstands and hitting the low bar on giants, but in the EF she won gold with a 15.367!🙂 Hopefully, she can put together a beam routine for worlds!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She needs to get back into the Rhythm of competing and she will be fine.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

@gymbot I agree. I think Aliya could upgrade to 6.8 on both beam and bars.

    • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Kyla’s lack of upgrades is simultaneously really understandable and really, really frustrating. I mean, on one hand, she’s grown a lot since London (isn’t it like 4 inches? and probably a few pounds of just solid muscle) and that will fck up your centre of gravity and potentially make swinging bars and big releases more difficult. She has the cleanest basics of probably anyone on the elite scene right now, and probably has had to work on re-perfecting them mid-puberty.

That said, her BASICS are damn near perfect, so how about, you know, trying for harder skills and putting those basics to good use? She has a seriously strong foundation to build on, but whether it’s her or her coaches, somebody is withholding anything beyond what she was doing in London.

She could be a serious contender IF she bumped up just a few things. I don’t know if bars are harder for her now, but adding some pirouetting skills would add difficulty without risking releases. Beam- upgrade some of the acro moves, try a new spin or a double into a single, upgrade the dismount… little things. Floor could use some more dynamic tumbling, put that new muscle to good use! Adding a few more difficult moves into one pass or one skill to each of 2-3 passes. Obviously, it can be hard to fit them in given that she’s tall for a gymnast and that makes it harder to keep it in-bounds, but even just one skill to each run or replace current skills with more difficult ones and lessen the likelihood of going out. Add spins. And leaps. She’s so graceful and could do these beautifully, I think. She probably will never be a threat to Simone, but she can make it so they can keep going 1-2.

All of this wall of text aside, I wish she would, I don’t know, be less boring. She’s a beautiful gymnast but I can’t watch her routines because they are so.god.durned.BORING. It almost makes me want to give her an Adderall before meets, see if that perks her up some. I DO think doing NCAA would really help with this, break her out of that stoic shell a little.

TL;DR I can’t wait to see Aly come back, and I really want to see Jordyn come back but at this point she’s not even training, so if she wants a shot at Rio, she needs to get in the gym ASAP. I honestly think she’s just having fun at school, and she absolutely should. Just…please don’t pull a Nastia on us, Jo. And I could die happy if Gabby never competes ever again. Ugh.

  11. JAS4 Says:

I think Kyla could do similar things in her beam routine to get her start value up.

    • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

I feel like Kyla is capable of doing most of the skills Aliya and Simone do on beam, and could get her start value up to 6.4-6.8 instead of sticking to her 6-6.1 routine.

      • Case Says:

But yet….she doesn’t make the changes.

      • gymbot Says:

If she replaced the bhs+loso w/ the bhs+arabian she was working on in 2013, she would gain 0.4 on her score (6.5) – so I would start there. She could also do a leap series out of the side aerial.

    • Tortuga Says:

I’m hoping she’s just waiting till 2015-2016 to upgrade, when she will really need it. This would only be possible if she differs college till the fall after the Olympics. I think next year will be when she decides if she has a good shot at the team or if she should just end on a better note and go on to Stanford. So I’m hoping for a good season next year.

      • biyatch Says:

She’ll definitely need to upgrade next year even to just stay relevant as an UB/BB worker. Next year with the potential of having Gabby, Aly, Bailie and Nia plus Simone all trying to grab AA spots Kyla will be hard pressed if she doesn’t upgrade (and probably upgrade significantly.)

GTT whats you email for the blog?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

  12. sainabou nyang Says:

Welp Senior Pan Ams is a mess. Skinner is current leader for AA. She also scored 13.95 on floor due to 2 feet OOB. Desch had a fall on beam, Amelia fell on Floor, and worse Maggie might have messed up her knee landing wrong on a double pike. Shes pulled out if event finals to get an MRI.

Ashton scored a 15.00 on bars and Kocian a 14.75.

If Maggies injury is serious and puts her out of worlds contention, Brenna needs to really bring it at selection camp.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Wow they’re dropping like flies this year aren’t they. Makes Kyla’s decision not to go full throttle look smarter and smarter. Probably all these camps aren’t doing anyone any favors…

      • gymbot Says:

She says Rio, if everyone burns out with injuries but she can still swing bars and stand on the beam, I think she’ll go.

    • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

The international judges were much more accurate with scores than the judges at Nationals. Locklear’s routine was a bit similar to her Nationals Day 2 routine, which had a REALLY late pirouette, so it was really only overscored by about .2 at Nationals, and the 15 here was accurate. If she did her routine like she did day 1, I think she’d be able to get a 15.4 internationally, but there’s no way she’ll get a 15.85. Kocian has really nice handstands, but those form breaks kill me. she had a bad landing on her dismount, which cost her about 0.3, so she could probably pull off a 15 internationally, but not a 15.5.

    • lol Says:

Kocian finally getting a score she deserves. Pay attention Marta.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Nichols is actually icing her ankle, desch had ice on her knee. At least from the pictures. Event finals wont be decided until tonight. Im so confused.

    • gymbot Says:

This meet really bummed me out for the US. Sorry to rant below.

      1. Locklear – WTF? why didn’t she do beam Marta? The whole point was to test them before worlds? To see how they scored with international judges and how they held up at an international meet. Put her on the effing beam. In TF, perhaps nobody wants Locklear on beam, but if you were in a situation (choosing between Skinner, Locklear and Dowell for beam?), it would be bad if she choked her first time up there when her score matters.

      2. Nichols – this girl has been to 3 international meets in 2013, 2 international meets so far in 2014. She hit all of her routines at Classics and Nationals. She scored decently at all of them and similarly here, even with more mistakes than usual. She didn’t need to be tested and now may have injury and jeopardizes her shot at worlds – which in my opinion is bad for the team. So what if she really doesn’t shine anywhere? She doesn’t fall as much as some gymnasts. If Skinner is going to max at 14.5 for an amazing routine, but more likely will hover around 14 – Nichols should have been the 3rd floor worker for Nanning instead. At least she wouldn’t flip onto her face (full-in last pass) or slip onto her butt (3/2 ind 5/2 last pass) as Skinner is very likely to do.

      3. Hano – I’m glad she’s on national team but it’s a bummer she traveled and trained for nothing. She’s not going to worlds so this would have been a good meet to use her. Hindsight is everything, so I couldn’t say she should have replaced Nichols to avoid the injury. But Hundley? Definitely. We didn’t need her DTY to win, but Hundley was only going to offer low scores anyway with the 3/2 yurchenko and floor presumably. Hano’s DTY would have been better for the team and her floor would have been comparable.

      4. Desch/GAGE – What the hell is going on at GAGE. Desch is off the beam and skidding OOB on floor at every meet. She’s the only healthy GAGE girl left but is a worst headcase on the national team. On top of that, Dowell has the ankle injury, Finnegan left after two years of injuries and Vega switch to GAGE only to be destroyed there. Does Al Fong wear gloves because he destroys every gymnast he touches? Also, please choose slower music for Desch if she going to dance at a snail’s pace and roll on the floor. I would be writing her up for the musicality deduction, at the absolute least, for artistry deductions.

      5. At the end of the season before worlds, USA lost Priessman and Gowey. Baumann and now Nichols may also need recovery time and Kocian’s ankle will probably explode three beam routines from now. Someone gets injured at every meet, and with so few seniors, the statistical chance that the injured girl at Worlds will be Biles or Ross is now higher. They should bring an alternate who is likely injure herself to balance out all this negative karma Marta is stirring up before worlds.

I sort of hope the US loses to China, or even Russia – so the team is better managed next season.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Nice to see you throw some spit fire into your usual even keel opinion there gymbot.

Marta has been breaking gymnasts for years. People seem to forget because she got lucky at the last Olympics but Marta breaking people is the norm.

I agree Nichols should have been home resting for worlds.

      • gymbot Says:

I now feel like I should say some positive things. So I have to say that I am enjoying Mexico on vault and floor, Elsa Garcia is really underrated in my opinion and I think they should have challenged her D score on floor 4.8? I’m trying to remember is she had a turn or not. Cuba’s beam was great – some lovely extended leaps, lots of front tuck mounts. Every girl had a different dismount which was nice, including a very rare punch double twist (fwd). Also they have a leo that represents Cuba and is pretty at the same time, so I hope they realize how much they are truly winning. One girl also did a cheststand with leg choreography in the middle of her beam routine – very original since she compete a move on the beam with the spirit of doing something different. All of Canada’s floor routines are kind of on drugs, but in a good way. I have to say I am drawn to how weird they all are.

      • sainabou nyang Says:

Usagym should have scheduled classics in early July with nationals two weeks after that. Even for a low caliber event like pan am champs the girls would have more time to rest after nationals.
How do expect them to literally compete three competitions in ONE month back to back. Even the most in shape, mentally tough gymnast would probably have issues I was exhausted watching the routines because some looked labored or just not polished. The only person who looked close to solid was Skinner. Why is Hano there and not competiting? I hate when usagym wastes national team spots.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Back in 94 with in a month and maybe a half Dynamo sent their kids to Russia and then competed at Nationals all with in a month (maybe an a half) This has been going on a long time.

      • gymbot Says:

Sainabou – I am totally in agreement. This is maddening

      • Dee Says:

Skinner first AA and Nichols out with an injury? Did that really happen?! WHY OH WHY

I just can’t believe how many girls are getting hurt this season. I don’t have much other insight HAHA I’m away and the Internet is bad but I was dying to get on here and read what happened!

  13. gymbot Says:

Wow, Canada lost to Mexico and Cuba? Even if this team lacked A team members, this must be a blow. No Canadian girl in bars finals, Yu sits in 8th for floor with a score of 13 – Copiak and Chant are 7th (13.6) and 8th (13.5) for beam – with one more subdivision to go. They are hosting and might walk away without anything.

    • gymbot Says:

And I forgot about Brasil – the team looked amazing on beam so far. Chant and Copiak are already knocked out of finals. Brasil could easily take Mexico for Silver. I’m curious to see how close they get to USA.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Brazil beat USA on floor and beam. That is all…. Brazil is back

      • gymbot Says:

Looks like they need some work on bars, they essentially dropped 5-6 pts behind the US there counting a number of falls, lower difficulty and lower quality work. However, this team bested the Brasil 2011 team’s qualification score. Still would not be enough to guarantee a spot to the Olympics, but the team is definitely improving. There is a lot to be excited for, given the Brasilian crowd will go nuts over Andrade and Saraiva in Rio if they are able to qualify a team again this quad.

      • gymmom2 Says:

Well with the USA having to count an 11.65, they are lucky Mexico didn’t beat them on floor.

      • gymbot Says:

I think Garcia landed her double pike to dismount out of bounds, losing about 2 points. So they are lucky in that regard.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

That was without barboza…if shes back they will easily qualify to rio.

I was thinking the same thing… theres a very good chance, since she’s only 18 that she’s underage. I hope they catch this person and prosecute the shit out of them. Steve Penny must be losing his mind. Hope the Maroney’s have a good lawyer handy.

      • sportsfan Says:

I saw the pics, because this is becoming a huge story since Jennifer Lawrence is one of the many celebs whose pics were hacked and stolen. The “master list” of pics have been taken off of 4chan, and you better believe lawyers and the FBI will be involved.

As far as Mckayla goes, there were 3 pics, and in two of them you can see her face, so there’s no denying its her. The third, you can’t see her face, so she could deny its her, and its the most revealing of the 3. For the record, I don’t believe that 3rd pic is Mckayla. I hope for her sake the family is looking into pressing charges.

Now for the technical side. Apparently, this is all due to a failure in the Apple Cloud system, which allowed this hacker(s) to breech the system, and its a well known issue, evidently. I hope Apple smartens up, and gets this stuff fixed.

      • Guest Says:

I saw a preview pic from 4 clan which shows a folder containing a series of pic. So I can say there is not only 3 pics of her.

      • Guest Says:

The third pic may not fully show her face, but somebody has matched her mole on her left chest with her other public pics showing the mole on the same position. The shape of nose also indicates that should be her.

      • Guest Says:

I don’t give the full link, but I can give the hints. There is comparison in the 3rd pic of her.

      • Cee Says:

That is disgusting, that people have analyzed MOLES and nose shapes–that indicates a truly creepy knowledge of these pictures which were stolen and are a violation. GROSS. Don’t view them, don’t give them attention, don’t link, and speak out every chance you get against this misogynistic garbage. Who cares if it’s Mckayla or not? They’re still stolen. They’re still a violation. Gross, gross, gross.

      • GymMom Says:

I don’t feel sorry for McKayla or anyone else, who had their nude photos published. The level of narcisissism in this country is disgusting. Verlander you are gross and disgusting! Your phone was hacked to get the Kate Upton nudes. McKayla, so you were “underage” when the nude photos were taken? What were you doing, taking nude photos? By the way, Kim Kardashian’s iphone was not hacked. We’ve seen enough of Kim nudes I guess?? The celebrities sense of entitlement never ceases to amaze me.

    • Akshay Says:

Good call on the no link. That would violate GTT’s disclaimer.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

LOL and we know how I love to pull that disclaimer out of google so I can add it to random places.

      • JAS4 Says:

The disclaimer is a good thing to have though lol but on another note I wonder if Komova will be on the Russian team for worlds since she wasn’t on the nominative list? Although I wouldn’t be surprised if she does make the team. The Rods supposedly want her to get vault back to make the team.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t have a clue. I can’t see them leaving her at home

      • sainabou nyang Says:

Too bad gymnastikes wasnt thinking about disclaimers when they linked the pics. The comments I read were scathing. They dragged gymnastike for filth.

    • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Gymnastike is the sum of the earth and linked to it on their site. They were even making revenue off of the clicks. Everyone needs to boycott them, so they can’t make revenue.

      • JAS4 Says:

That’s disturbing that they would link that. They need to have someone checking articles before posting to make sure stuff like.that doesn’t happen.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

They even put it as the breaking new story, and linked to the actual pictures. The article was still up when I checked, but it was moved out of breaking news and the links were removed. There are screen shots on Lauren’s tumblr Right now I’m trying my best to boycott gymnastike by not giving them clicks. I need to find an alternative to watch Pan Am Games videos.

      • JAS4 Says:

I think USAG posted some links to watch Pan Ams on their twitter and I think they said they will be uploading videos.

      • JAS4 Says:

        USA Gymnastics (@USAGym) tweeted at 2:16pm – 31 Aug 14:

Team USA goes for more medals at #PanAmGym, as event finals get underway in about 15 minutes! WATCH:… (

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Thanks for the link! The broadcasts are archived, which is great.

      • JAS4 Says:
Looks as if someone from USAG knows about gymnastike linking the photos and is not ok with it. (What USAG says and does can be two different things so who knows) I personally haven’t been on gymnastike’s website since they started charging.(They have to right to charge but I can’t afford to pay lol) However I do find it sketchy that theey would link that especially since they have a wide audience including minors.

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

I just go to their website for the free video content of podium training and Pan Am videos, but after the McKayla article I will no longer be visiting the site. I am happy that Leslie King seems to be considering to revoke gymnastike’s access to competitions. What they did was unacceptable.

  16. mim Says:

Hoping Papa Maroney goes all litigation on Gymnastike’s ass. He’s a lawyer so they are set with contacts of a good legal rep. hope they sue the creep who hacked/leaked them. Not across US laws but surely there’s a case for child pgraphy if she was underage.

I hate to say it but I’m not at all surprised she potentially could have taken photos of herself like this. So many teens (hell even adults) find validation or self-expression in doing so. I totally support the right of people to take photos (or videos) of themselves like this but I just want to shake these kids and say just think it through and assess the risk first because there are scummy, awful people out there who will JUMP at the chance to exploit and victimise you, celebrity or otherwise. Even with someone who trust at the time could turn out to betray you with this sort of crap. Even if no one saw it privately if that’s what was intended, technology is NOT fail safe. Ugh it sucks for her so much. and for her family who are probably mortified.

It’s in no way, shape or form her fault- her privacy has been grossly violated. And Gymnastike’s so so gross for drawing attention to it the way they did. They’ve done some shady things but this takes the cake.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

I love that link jas4. Its quite possible that any if not all were faked, or if she was under aged gymnastike is sued and dead in the water. They honestly dont have to prove she was under 18 when she took these. All they have to do is scream it, and people should stop for child porn. All I have to say is I know USAG would never have to worry about Kyla or Jordyn or Aly doing this.

      • Cee Says:

“Worry[ing] about Kyla” et al. is not the point. The point is pictures were stolen. Mckayla is not to be “worried about”–she was violated. She is the victim.

      • Gymbee Says:

Agree Cee, and since none of us know Kyla et al, we have absolutely no idea what they do in their own privacy! What any of them does is not our business, which is why crimes like these are so horrible.-

      • gymnerd Says:

“All I have to say is I know USAG would never have to worry about Kyla or Jordyn or Aly doing this.”

Hmmmm…you left out GABBY. Freudian slip? 😉

    • GymMom Says:

I agree that websites posting the photos should be prosecuted. But the narcissistic celebs/athletes sound stupid talking about their “privacy.” McKayla’s initial denial that it was her in the photos was the most stupid of all. Anyone who thinks any content on their devices is secure is delusional.

  17. Case Says:

Yikes. Even though McKayla’s privacy was violated here, I can’t imagine Marta is at all thrilled her name is even linked to this. Yikes.

Hey GTT, might want to remove that blurb about Kaley from the article for her safety. 🙂

  18. Karlie Says:

I actually emailed USAGymnastics because I was so disgusted by Gymnastike.

Apparently the third photo is a confirmed fake, though the first two are likely legitimate. The third is a mirror image of a normal photo of McKayla (?) and the mole is photoshopped onto the correct side. Someone from USAGym has confirmed this.

    • Karlie Says:

Actually, they just responded with a similar message to the one above – they’re disgusted and re-evaluating Gymnastike’s ability to access their gymnastics media.

      Fingers crossed.

      • mim Says:

Ah okay so one of them is fake. Well, fake or not, she’s been violated in an awful, awful way. If someone went to the trouble of photoshopping her like that.. I truly shudder at the thought. Her poor parents must be freaking the hell out, I can’t even imagine. The people at Gymnastike are not only immoral but obviously not too bright either, I can’t imagine what they were thinking.

USAG must be in total damage control but I hope they give McKayla the support she needs. While I can’t imagine USAG is pleased with this negative attention, I hope they’re genuinely standing behind her.

I suspect the gymnasts will all get a talking to about their social media usage, and surely McKayla’s parent/agent/USAG will be seriously cracking down on all the selfies.

This drama, paired with Maggie Nichols’ injury and Mykayla Skinner’s AA gold, is all just too much weird and not-so-great gym news for me this week!

      • Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

I emailed as well, and got the same response. I hope with all the emails they are getting, USAG does something about gymnastike.

      • Dee Says:

Mim, I just LOL’d. Skinners AA gold might have been the worst of all this news for me!

I didn’t pay much attention to the nude celeb pic scandal bc I really don’t pay attention to celebrity…anything. However, this gymnasike stuff has grabbed my attention. I haven’t been on their site since they began charging. I don’t want to go look at the article, but based on all that was said here, I can’t believe they would link photos and put it as “breaking news”. By doing that, they aren’t any better than the person who leaked the photos in the first place. I don’t see why they didn’t just leave it alone and allow usag to make a statement. I’m sure a lot of people didn’t know about the scandal and now do because they had to post it just to get clicks. Gross.

      • gymnerd Says:

I’m not counting on USAG standing behind McKayla. I bet her scores suddenly drop through the floor or she conveniently injures out of the sport, because she’s “embarrassed the organization.” Wait and see.

    • Guest Says:

It sounds there are not only 3 pics of McKayla. I saw somebody post the capture of folder containing more pics.

      • Cee Says:

Yeah, you “saw somebody post.” Sure. You sound like you’ve spent a loooootttttt of time looking at these pictures.

  19. gia20 Says:

So far the only gymnast supporting Mckayla, calling out gymnastike is Jennifer Pinches. Nothing from US gymnasts”Mckayla bffs”. Do you think USA Gymnastics will issue an official statement regarding this awful situation. Mckayla said the pics are fake but they seemed legit to me. I wonder how this mess will affect Maroney’s future as a gymnast.

    • Case Says:

Well, if the pics are real (which is a big IF) this certainly won’t be viewed positively in the USA Gym circles. You think Marta won’t be raging over this? All the current elites will probably stay quiet for that reason alone.

That’s not to say McKayla hasn’t been violated, because she has in a serious way. But USA Gym doesn’t enjoy these scandals. I’ll go so far as to say it adversely impacts her Rio chances. Not saying it’s right, but Marta is not known for her reasonableness. Hope she proves me wrong.

    • H Says:

Hopefully they want to send the best gymnast, and these picture fake or not should not have nothing to do with it.
And seriously this cannot affect her chances at all. We are living in 2014 and what she does or not does privately is her business.

      • Dee Says:

This is 2014 but Marta is old school. I have to seriously wonder if she won’t use this against Maroney, as unfair as that would be.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

This is the one that put Mohini on an Olympic team because some whore paid her way. Publicity is all that matters

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Best. Comment. Ever.

      • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Wait, what happened with Mohini? I checked out for that quad and now I’m curious.

      • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Unfortunately, I see this ending badly as far as Mckayla’s gym career. Regardless of what we think about this leak, Mckayla is -whether she realizes it or wants it or not- a public figure that many, many young girls look up to and idolize. And their parents probably won’t be thrilled with their kids looking up to someone who takes risqué photos of herself. Also, and again like it or not, Mac represents USAG and is a public face for them, and this is not in line with their athlete code that was in the nastia bff tumblr link. I think. Didn’t read it closely. With her out on injury and Simone and Mykayla bringing huge vaults, it wouldn’t be surprising if she got edged out by Marta. Really sucks, but that’s politics. I wanted to see her do a TTY, damn it.

I’m not victim shaming at all- She’s an adult, she’s a sexual being and has the right to express herself as such, and she did so in a private manner without expecting it to be spread to billions of people. Was it stupid to put those photos in the cloud? Probably. But she’s 18, was homeschooled, spent 6+ hours a day in the gym, 6 days a week, for like….10 years. Despite her exposure to the media in the past two years, she’s still understandably naïve. Hell, I’m really, really glad that social media (besides Myspace) wasn’t around when I was a teenager, because I did a lot of stupid shit. It’s how blatantly her privacy was completely disregarded, especially by Gymnastike, that pisses me off.

      • Gymbee Says:

I agree with GTT. Publicity is all that matters. This will all blow over, and the average public will remember that she was in the news, not what for.

On the radio this morning there was some IT expert or something talking about it, and he made a good point about the cloud and whether these celebrities should have “put it in the cloud”. He said most people have no idea what’s in their cloud or what goes there. Personally I don’t know which and how many of my photos are in the cloud. So it’s not a given that these celebs knew it was even there.

      • mim Says:

onelifeonejourneyonealex – I think Pam Anderson was her financial sponsor or something like that. Was moved by her story and financially backed her during her training for the Olympics.

      • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Thanks for the info, mim. Those two are, um…a weird combo?

      • Dee Says:

I always forget about Mo and Pam Anderson. That was an odd combo.

    • mim Says:

gia20 I would bet my house that the gymnasts have been told to zip it publicly by USAG. I’m sure they are supporting her quietly.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

Looks like Aly is the first one to say something or at least the first one I noticed. She doesn’t mention Maroney in her tweets but it’s obvious who it’s directed to.

        Her recent tweets:

    • gymnerd Says:

Maybe Gabby will tweet something like, “Everyone has to learn how to deal with disappointment.”

  20. gilttrip Says:

The backlash against Gymnastike seems a little overblown to me. When ABC news and CNN mention McKayla Maroney in their articles as well, no one is from the gymternet is going ballistic about them. Just sayin’. (And no, I get just as annoyed on a regular basis with Gymnastike too. Just trying to look at it from a media perspective.)

    • Exgymgurl Says:

Gymnastics should not have linked the pics. Thats totally different than a mention.

    • gymmom2 Says:

ABC and CNN not only didn’t show the pics, their main audience is not minor girls whose parents are not expecting to have to use parental controls to keep their kids out of gymnastike. That alone is a huge difference. Now, if they hadn’t linked pictures and had used it as a lesson about letting your phone auto-load your pictures to the cloud so they sync with all your media – that at least might have been a plausible excuse to mention it. Assuming they are fake, having access to lots of candid phone photos – like swimsuit pics – make it much easier for some weirdo to photoshop. If all they had were professional pictures that have been posted on-line, it would be a bit harder to pull off a fake photoshop nudie. And if you are taking selfie nudies – body awareness is a big teen issue – then double reason to be warned about letting auto-uploads to clous storage. Just try setting up almost any new device ( computer or otherwise) without allowing cloud access – maybe we need some push back about some of that.

  21. Exgymgurl Says:

I think they are probably all fake honestly. Photoshop is hard to prove, but they just dont look realistic. I could see her doing splits like that in a bikini, and then it being fairly straightforward to photoshop it. Some of the others are proven fakes. Until someone can prove they arent photoshopped, I think USAG cant shouldnt do anything. If they are fake, its completely not McKaylas fault that one was just a worse fake than some others.

  22. Exgymgurl Says:

I hope gymnastike gets what has been coming to them for a while. The NCAA needs to know about this also, because I dont think they should have access to NCAA athletes either

  23. Exgymgurl Says:

They should give you full USAG access since you didnt bite the hand that isnt even feeding you. You did it out of human decency.

  24. Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Many people have emailed Flocasts, the company in charge of gymnastike, and they refuse to apologize or take the article down. Instead, they have put a second article up with McKayla’s response. -_- Gymnastike has gone downhill, since people from flocasts are posting these articles on their website. Gymnastike cannot override flocasts and take the article down themselves.

    • sportsfan Says:

Any organization that PROFITS from these pics, real or otherwise, should be ashamed and disgusted w/ themselves. That site is a subscription service, and is using this story to generate clicks. USAG needs to revoke all access they ever gave them. All these young ladies lives were violated, and I hope those who did this are brought to justice.

  25. Kaley (@kittykatgym) Says:

Flocasts says that they are covering all aspects of the sport by posting this article, yet they have nothing on Russian and Romanian Nationals. Umm… okay.

    • Dee Says:

Sounds like bull to me. There is no reason for them to leave that article up…it must have gotten them more web traffic than they have had since they started charging people. My friend told me she read in the comments section that a lot of people are canceling their subscription over this.

  26. onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Based on the comments over at Gymnastike, they’re losing subscribers left and right. Should be an epic shitshow watching how this plays out on their end.
    Popcorn, anyone?

    • Case Says:

It’s about dollars clearly for Gymnastike. If millions of people search for Maroney’s pictures, the loss of a few subscribers won’t even matter in their eyes.

In other news, Justin Verlander’s naked butt came across my twitter feed earlier. Could have done without seeing that too.

      • GymMom Says:

Amen on Justin Verlander! He’s not good looking and is gross!!! I saw some selfies he took without a shirt, wearing “Dad jeans.”

    • onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Eh, jein. Millions of people are searching NOW, but when this blows over and people realize that they can’t find the pictures on there traffic will drop. Meanwhile, a lot of people are unsubscribing and several gym blogs I follow are starting a #BoycottGymnastike twitter campaign. I don’t really care which way it goes, I’m just here for the show. And that includes watching any potential litigation that comes out from the Maroney camp. YMMV.

Also, Case, I had no idea who Justin Verlander was so I googled that ish and thank you, I now need retina bleach.

  27. sanitynmotion Says:

You guys might hate me for saying this, but any time you put photos of yourself on a device that has an Internet connection, you’re putting yourself out there for the potential release of ALL OF IT. I love how all this “right to privacy” BS is being spouted but really people, whoever said the Internet is private?!? Even the government is all over everyone’s business, but the media shoves that under a rug. If you want to keep yourself, your life, your private parts private – don’t put them on a device that has access to a VERY public domain. Period.

I don’t really feel sorry for these people. Including McKayla. Fake or not, she loves to put herself out there (on her own accord I’ve seen photos she’s released that are pretty Risk-ay if you know what I mean…) and by putting yourself out there like that you’re drawing attention of all kinds – including the bad kind. Including the perverts, and we all know there are more and more of them and an outlet like the Internet is their best friend.

There is a “reason” why we know people like Simone, Kyla, Aly, and Jordyn are basically safe from this sort of persecution. Because their social media profiles and personalities in general place much doubt in the notion that they take naked selfies and store them on their iPhones. McKayla, not so much. Sorry girlfriend.

So with that being said, while it is embarrassing and yes, an invasion of privacy – are you really all that surprised? DON’T TAKE NAKED PHOTOS OF YOURSELF ON YOUR INTERNET DEVICE if you don’t want them potentially being leaked, especially if you’re a celebrity of sorts.

I mean sheesh. Is this not common sense?

And BTW Gymnastike – go ahead and report it happened, whatever. But to provide a link to the photos – yes that’s just gross and whoever did that should be fired ASAP.

I don’t think Papa Maroney will file lawsuit because then it will be public knowledge that those photos were in fact legit. Better to claim they are fake and let the scandal be pushed to the back burner after enough time has passed. The American public is fickle and forgets this crap after a few weeks anyways. On to the next best thing – like what Angelina wore on her wedding day (gag).

    • Case Says:

I don’t hate you for saying this at all. In fact, you made some pretty damn legit points.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I have been keeping pretty quiet on the Mckayla front but this is also my opinion.

    • sportsfan Says:

Sounds like Papa Maroney is, in fact, looking to press charges. At the same time, however, inherently admitting to the authenticity of the pics.

According to the Huffington Post, lawyers representing the family have contacted various sites who had the pictures up telling them to take them down due to the fact Mckayla was underage when the pics were taken. All sites have complied, thus far, due to not wanting to face Child Pornography charges. If they do catch these hackers, their potential time in prison just increased exponentially.

      Story here:

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mckayla can’t seem to make up her mind. First she says they aren’t her and now she says she was under age. Apparently we can add Liar to her list of accomplishments.

      • Ilanchik20 Says:

The way I understood it: the pics where she is in the swimsuit/undies are real and she was underage in those; the others, where she is completely naked are fake. Honestly, either way it doesn’t matter. Sure she took them, sure she had them somewhere where they could have been stolen but at the end of the day, she is the last person to blame in this–people who want to look at these pics are the problem. Girls who are treated as if they asked for it are not the problem. End of rant.

      • Gymbee Says:

It’s a very tricky situation for a young girl to find herself in. Probably anyone’s gut reaction/managers decision is to say they’re fake, but then you have her added career on top of it, not just her dignity that’s hurt.
Even though I agree with sanity it was stupid to take photos like that and put them on a phone connected to the internet, fact is it is a crime hacking and distributing such photos. It was stolen from all these women.

      • sportsfan Says:

I will say GTT, that Mckayla hasn’t said anything since the denial of the pics authenticity. So, I wouldn’t call her a liar, just someone who probably jumped the gun to protect her image w/out thinking about it from a legal perspective. Nor, would I expect an 18 year old to calmly process what’s happened before speaking publicly via Twitter. Her father seems to have taken the reigns here, as he should, and has gone ahead accordingly.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Come on. She came out and lied. Its that simple. She isn’t 12 she’s 18.

Her father should have taken the reigns a year ago when she was 17 and legally this was still his problem.

If Nastia had pulled this BS at 18 people at least at this blog would be calling her out but because people like Mckayla they seem to want
to give her a free pass for her part in this.

Its this simple if these pictures didn’t exist they couldn’t be leaked.

I am not blaming her for someone breaking into her cloud and taking the pictures because that isn’t her fault. They were stolen but how
long have we been saying this will catch up to Mckayla? I said it the first time she pulled this.

Lets be realistic here too if Mckayla wants to be an actress this will do no harm at all to her future in that area. Crap like
this sells and it will only help her “career” if that is what she chooses to do. Yep that is the sad reality.

I too stopped following anything Mckayla related a long time ago.

      • katecoursey Says:

Wait why did she lie? She said the naked pictures were fake…that could still very well be the case, and only the swimsuit ones were real. Also, it’s possible her father is choosing to call out sites for child pornography because that’s the fastest way to get the photos taken down…doesn’t necessarily mean they weren’t photoshopped.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Anything her father does to get those pictures taken down is fine with me. Those pictures were stolen, period so if he wants them off the internet he can play
any lawyer game he likes to have them taken down.

Even Kim Kardashian didn’t deserve to have her porn flick out on the internet. If she didn’t release it ( no one really knows with the Kardashians) it was private and while stupid to make one in the first place it was still not anyones to steal.

    • mim Says:

There IS a middle ground between “victim shaming” and “ignoring the realities of needing to take precautions in a world where creeps and criminals try to violate people.” I don’t understand why so many people have to go either extreme.

So many young people do not realise the consequences of decisions made. Would I personally take nudies and save them on my computer? No. Because I understand that devices aren’t secure and if I’m not comfortable with sh!t being released to the public I won’t do it. I have no problem with people doing this in their own private time if they want to and people do have the right to privacy. That doesn’t stop freaks from trying to, and successfully, accessing the stuff and really these things should be considered before doing such “scandalous stuff.”

I feel for McKayla because it seems she did this as a dumb teenager who clearly hasn’t been sat down by parents or her management to be all “Honey, think about the image you want to portray. You have grown men making sick comments on your fairly risque photos. You constantly parade your little sister on your social media without little consideration for her privacy.” She’s a dumb kid who thinks herself attractive making dumb decisions (probably trying to rebel away from the perfect gymnast image these kids have forced on them) with a lot to learn. I hope her parents will wake up a bit to how she uses social media, we’ve all said that for ages. I know she’s 18 now but most people aren’t all that savvy to consequences at that age, even the nerdy cautious ones like I was back in the day.

Regardless of her own actions, Gymnastike’s actions are way way worse.

But Jennifer Lawrence? Kirsten Dunst? Eh, not so much sympathy. They’re certainly old enough to know better. Yes, their privacy was violated and that sucks for them and the hackers are scum, but surely they have a better sense of how to protect themselves.

      • Gymbee Says:

Well said mim, totally agree. Sadly there’s not many kids I know at 18 who are mature enough to think things through, heck even in their 20’s. People tend to stay younger (and dumber) for longer.
Also, had this been Nastia or Gabby, I’d feel the same way – young dumb 18 year old not realising the risk they put themselves at, but still, being a victim of theft.

    • GymMom Says:

And Justin Verlander’s iphone was hacked only to get the Kate Upton nudes.

    • biyatch Says:

I’m going to preface this by saying yes these people are victims, if their confidential online banking information was stolen, it would be no different. They had something confidential stolen from them.

At the same time(and this is in no way trying to justify the hackers), yes, McKayla’s online presence probably makes her more vulnerable to people going digging for this sort of thing then someone like Aly or Gabby. Aly in particular comes off as very measured in the public persona that she puts out. (Which is probably why she sometimes comes off as a robot.) She goes to the beach with Talia Charrelli and April Baker all the time and you always see Aly omitted from the bikini pictures that the others post. She seems to be very careful about what she does and doesn’t put into the public sphere. My guess is that her team at Octagon having been through Phelps’ bong-gate last quad is probably on top of her about public image.

      • Tortuga Says:

Thanks biyatch, I’ve been comparing it to online banking as well. It’s like saying that if someone is able to figure out your online banking info and drain your account it’s your own fault for having the account and an easy password. Which is obviously not true. Yes McKayla should have been more careful, but honestly it wasn’t till recently I realized that even pictures I took (didn’t like) and immediately deleted sometimes ended up in my Google cloud. So it’s just a big wake up call that everyone needs to be more aware of what is being put out there.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

There are added protections though for online banking – you can sign up for alerts, and in addition to that passwords are being mandated with more complexities.

I’ve been hacked before, and I was able to put a stop to it – thank you Chase.

There are no protections for the cloud and none for storing photos on your phone (and this is pretty well known). If someone hacks you, you aren’t alerted to it or any potential sign of it until it’s too late (with photos).

That being said, McKayla’s parents should have known better what was going on and had a nice “talk” with her before any of this could have happened. I don’t even know her and I could tell by looking at her “good morning” or whatever selfies she was sending out via Twitter/Instagram that she was a risk for this sort of thing. She is very much in love w/herself and craves attention. She wants the “oh you’re so beautiful marry me” comments. It’s not too hard to see what your child is doing on their phone in social media. My sister does it with her kids all the time and monitors them, and at the ages of 11 and 13 know better than to do anything stupid like store risky photos of themselves on their iPads/phones/etc.

McKayla has also been more exposed in general at her age to the complexities of the world, so I don’t buy “she’s just a stupid teenager” crap. She’s mature enough to know better too – just like the Kirsten Dunsts’ of the world. They just figure they have a “right” to privacy and it won’t happen to them. Nobody has a “right” to privacy on the Internet (I mean we do, but it’s not a given right and just look at what the government does on a daily basis) – it’s a known thing that anything w/Internet access is not private, and by storing risky photos on an Internet device you are susceptible to this sort of thing, especially as an “out there” celebrity.

It’s kind of like using corporate email to job hunt, and then getting mad when your boss fires you for not being a loyal employee because you’re using work time/resources to find a different job. That just happened to someone I know at the age of 55. I mean, duh people. Common sense!

    • gymnerd Says:

I agree. Post of the day, Sanity.

    • Short1 Says:

      @sanitynmotion Very well said.

The bottom line is whether people realize it, like it or want to admit it very little (if anything) that involves an Internet connection is truly ‘private.’ And as a result people need to way the potential consequences of any photos and/or video taken and saved when an Internet connection is involved (and be ‘media literate’ as my grad school professors used to say). In this digital age everyone has to be looking out for their own best interest and take preventative measures to protect themselves. As was said in one of Apple’s terms of service/use (that somebody posted on Tumblr), by using those devices and saving information to them people are accepting and taking a risk.

You can definitely tell by looking at various gymnasts’ Twitter and Instagram posts that some are definitely more media savvy/media literate than others. And a big kudos to those who (you can tell) are very selective when it comes to what they post (as others have already mentioned). The less that’s out there and the more tame it is, the lower the risk. Personally, I almost never post photos of myself on my social media accounts and when I do I don’t post anything that I wouldn’t be comfortable with the whole world seeing (should any of my account’s security ever be compromised).

Lastly, I’ve noticed on other sites some people seemed to be confusing ‘victim-shaming’ with saying that people need to be more aware of the risks that come with saving something on the Internet/where there’s an Internet connection. As mim said, there definitely is a middle ground between any one party being 100% to blame or 100% percent blameless. But, with so many having said and/or implied (again, not on here but elsewhere) that those whose photos were stolen don’t bear any responsibility to for what happened…I think that kind of sends the wrong message. That’s not to say bulk of the responsibility doesn’t rest on the shoulders of those who stole the photos, because it certainly does, but I think some responsibility also goes to those who took the risk and saved their private photos and videos to those devices.

Sorry for the ramble, I’m going to shut up now.

  28. onelifeonejourneyonealex Says:

Sanity, that is what I’ve been thinking but didn’t want to say outright because I didn’t feel like getting slammed over ‘victim-shaming’ and perpetuating rape culture, etc. ad nauseum. I agree completely that this was a stupid move on a lot of people’s part, and that Mckayla may not have taken *these* photos of herself, but her Instagram….I almost feel uncomfortable looking at it and am no prude by any stretch of the imagination.

Papa Maroney could bring a lawsuit, though, while alleging that the photos are fake, probably as a defamation of character suit or some such. IDK, I quit law school because of stupid shit like that.

    • GymMom Says:

None of the celebrities are victims! They’re idiots who feel entitled to “privacy.” Hey dummies in Hollywood…get an office job and nobody will bother you or hack your iphone. I’ve said this about Hallie Berry when she complains about the paparazzi taking photos of her daughter. Get a regular job that doesn’t involve earning millions of dollars and VIP perks. McKayla’s been pushing the envelope for 2 years! Learn from this celebs/athletes. Don’t take the nude photos!!!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I so agree with you on this GymMom. Everyone knows the price you pay for being a celebrity. Cracks me up when celebrities complain about it. Ok then if it’s so awful, move out of Hollywood and do something else. Stop working in the “industry.” Otherwise, shut up. This is what you signed up for, and think of all the millions of people who would LOVE to be in your shoes and have your “problems.”

Personally, I always say how nice it would to be rich – but I definitely would not want to be famous.

  29. GymMom Says:

No comparison between taking nude selfies and women being sexually assaulted. Quit comparing them! Thank you!

  30. GymMom Says:

Ha ha have to laugh at the comparison of leaked nude photos and online banking. Papa Maroney is a little late to the party! Where was he when McKayla was flashing her boobs on Instagram??? I’m sure her iphone was or is in his name like most young people and she lives in his house. Where are the nude pics of any other gymnasts?? Oh thats right..there are none! McKayla was lumped in with Hope Solo in this latest hacking. Remember McKayla participated in a Jared Leto music video?

    • Tortuga Says:

Whats wrong with being in a music video? Jordyn Weiber was in the same video. Yeah her parents and agents should have alerted her of the risks but she’s a teenager. Most teens don’t listen anyway. Hopefully she will learn now. Also most other gymnasts act like robots where as McKayla doesn’t. One exception, Alicia voluntarily did the body issue for ESPN and it wasn’t a big deal, but since McKayla did this in private and had it stolen she deserves it?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I (personally) don’t feel she deserved it – none of them “deserve” this – but they should have known better. She was an obvious target for this based on the comments of her “clothed” photos on Instagram. Some of those photos were questionable even on the “clothed” part to be honest. I actually un-followed McKayla because it was making me feel uncomfortable, and that was months ago.

  31. GymMom Says:

Check out the gross comments, undeleted.

  32. GymMom Says:

Pam Anderson is not exactly a great role model for young girls. McKayla looks slutty like Pam.

    • GymMom Says:

Not saying anyone deserved it. I’m saying everything on these smart phones/ipads/pcs is not guaranteed to stay private.

  33. gymnerd Says:

I just clicked on her Instagram and I’m waiting for the Thought Police to come knocking on my door. Just ick. The stuff she posts of HERSELF is borderline porny. I can’t imagine she’s really that upset about it…no such thing as bad publicity…so some pictures of her showing a couple less inches of fabric got out. Really not much more than she’s already posted. Going to bleach my eyes now.

    • Tortuga Says:

It did wonders for Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton to have a leaked sex tape. Should probably only give her more fame that she desires. I do hope she gets wiser and doesn’t feel the need to be so ‘sexy’ all the time.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Aw, sadly this is true. But I don’t think McKayla was looking for the type of “fame” that KK or Hilton have though. McKayla also does not have the Hollywood connections already established. BUT this does put her name out there – again – and unfortunately it’s not for anything gymnastics related.

I hope this doesn’t do anything damaging to her gymnastics career because it’s already bad enough she keeps having to come back from surgery after surgery. I fear she’ll end up like Bridgette Sloan; by the time Olympic Trials comes around she’ll have another injury and we won’t be able to see her fully compete.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You don’t think she was looking for this type of attention? If that was true she wouldn’t be putting half naked pictures of herself out there. This is exactly
the type of attention she was looking for. ( Not the naked pictures because those were stolen)

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Oh – I meant the “fame-whoredness” associated with KK and Paris Hilton. Like I don’t think she wants to be famous for that sort of thing; she’d rather be famous for being an actress or having a talent. Hope that makes sense. I feel like the kind of fame that KK has is cheap, but that’s just me. She’s basically a hated-on celebrity, and I feel like McKayla wants to be “loved” more than “hated.”

That being said, yes she totally craves attention in general. I think I said in an earlier post her Instagram photos say it all. The whole “good morning” selfies and shit. Like she obviously knows she’s pretty so she puts herself out there for the comments like “ohhhh so pretty” and “marry me” and “oh you’re so pretty I wanna be just like you” stupid crap you see.

I think it’s all so blatantly narcissistic. Like yeah, take a billion photos of yourself and then post the “best” one, and pretend like you didn’t just spend the last half hour trying to produce the “hottest” selfie to project to your fan base.

Sometimes I really hate this generation. Everybody is so into themselves – anyone watch the show Big Brother? This season is driving me batty because the contestants literally care more about the number of Twitter followers the show will give them over the $500k prize money at the end for whoever wins.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I haven’t watched Big Brother since the season Will won and I think that was the 2nd Will is the only one I remember.

Point taken above. I hope Mckayla doesn’t want to be infamous over famous but honestly now a days its all the same.

By showing off the skin she is getting that type of attention.

You rarely if ever see men going the fame whore route to get attention.

Why women feel the need to pose half naked for attention boggles the mind.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Ah, hitting the nail on the head. However, when it comes to female celebrity-dom, two words: SEX SELLS.

Just ask Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey (who had more talent than anyone in the 90s and then sold herself out to the hip-hop world), Christina Aguilera…oh, let’s add Ariana Grande to this list because even though the girl can sing like no other a-capella she apparently feels the need to prance around on-stage half-naked with very high-heeled boots (she obviously took notes from Miley Cyrus).

You don’t see Ed Sheeran (sp?) and other talented male vocalists having to play to this affect or having to “maintain” an image of sex. Our female pop stars vs. male continues to demonstrate the misogynistic culture we have. Sadly. Female celebrities must be attractive and sexy, and yet male celebrities can get away with a pudge here and there and are even allowed to age gracefully. If a bunch of male celebrity nude photos were released, guaranteed they wouldn’t generate near as many clicks, either.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

But these women celebrities choose to pose half naked. They could say no. They want the attention and publicity that goes with their talent other wise it would be about the music which in the end it is.(should be?)

Aguilera is a bitter little bitch that is her issue. Since their MMC days Britney who has no talent at all has out staged her in every aspect of entertainment. She’s jealous and always has been even though she has the talent (though IMO she is grossly overrated.) Christina was whining and basically saying (without coming out and saying it) why are all these MMC members getting record deals and I’m not when they are talentless hacks and I have the voice) Don’t get me started on Christina. The real voices from back in the day have not had any of the success the famous ones have had. Go listening to Jennifer Mcgill or Roque Herring or even Deedee Magno. They put the current group of fame whores from that show to shame.

I have never heard Grande sing so I have no clue how her voice is. My MP3 player doesn’t have a radio so I haven’t listened to the radio in 3 years.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

They could (say no), but the problem is that the entertainment industry will just find another to replace them that “will” pose half-naked willingly. Their talent isn’t great enough to hold them up or make them irreplaceable anymore (like Whitney Houston; now notice SHE did not have to go around half-naked).

Most of these pop stars today wouldn’t get by if it weren’t for auto-tune, and if they “are” really talented it’s not as noticeable because their non-talented counterparts are singing behind a track or using auto-tune or both. Notice how back in the “old days” without auto-tune the female singers actually “had” to have talent to make it. Not anymore. You just need to flash your vajay-jay and dance around like a slut on stage. Ok, I know not “every” pop star does this but I can honestly say it’s the majority.

I agree w/you on Aguilera. She even said at one point she was so angry Britney got a recording contract before she did, because Britney was the “dancer” and Christina was the “voice” on MMC. Well, when she DID get her deal, she came out with similar cheesy crap songs only worse. And then Christina tried to copy Britney with her sex appeal but it just came out all wrong and obvious. Kind of funny actually.

I hear in real life Britney is a much nicer/laid back person and Christina’s a real bitch. I can totally see it. I remember Christina trying to get people to feel sorry for her when she told the story of how at her high school prom her song came on and everyone left the dance floor. She made it seem that they were “jealous” of her fame but really it was most likely because she was such a bitch in real life.

I saw Ariana Grande sing a-capella in concert about a year ago – I didn’t know who she was then, but I was like “that girl is REALLY good!” Her mic at one point gave out and you could hear her actually sing – it was a nice change. I’m sorry to see that now she’s going the similar Mariah Carey route, but I guess I can’t blame her since that’s what seems to be what it takes to make it. She’s got like 3 singles out now and a new album. OH and her bro is on Big Brother this season and he’s a total douchebag/famewhore. He name drops her so much it’s pathetic. And he seriously thinks he’s just as famous as she is. It’s only entertaining because it’s so pathetic.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

In the end if the music sucks you will fade away. Britney had some decent music at the start even though she was auto corrected to sound like she could actually sing but I still like some of those songs.

Christina was always a little bitch. Used to watch MMC (And yes I admit that out loud to you now:) and the stuff we heard from people that attended the show on a regular basis back in the day would probably not surprise you. Britney used to follow Christina around and act like her but when she was alone she was an entire different person. That is why they aren’t friends now. Britney didn’t want to deal with it.

I also heard stories about how Keri Russell would get certain friends of her on the show to treat a certain member of the show badly and refuse to include her in things because she was jealous her boyfriend at the time secretly had a crush on this other “teer” Now this girl has mentioned she had felt left out a few times and recently said members of the show had told her it was because they didn’t want to corrupt her but I remember being told twenty years ago about this happening and I find it ironic 20 years later it actually turned out to be true. Albeit for a different reason. Not like any of these kids would admit what a bitch Keri was back in the day because they are too busy kissing her ass.

After Keri Russell left the show she came back to hang out with the boyfriend and they closed the set to friends because Keri was being such a bitchy trouble maker. Disney created that talentless twat but putting her in their pool and giving her jobs. Her entire career was because of Disney and their other companies.

I wish I remembered all the stuff I was told so long ago. I could write a book.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I watched MMC but I’m not sure it was that season – maybe a later one? I honestly can’t remember much I was so little. I also watched Kids Incorporated on Nick.

Britney’s music (and others) are made by really good producers – so you just need a good producer to not fade away (not a good voice anymore). I won’t lie though I’m a huge Britney fan. Always have been, haha. I still want to see her show in Vegas sometime. Yeah, I’m lame. I don’t care.

So which member of the show was Keri a bitch to? I saw Keri Russell once in a NYC hotel. I was in college and it was some university event and she was annoyed all these college kids were in the hotel lobby saying “look, Keri Russell is sitting over there at the bar.”

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Russell was a known bitch back in the day. She still seems it. She used to not include Jennifer Mcgill in things. Ilana was Keri’s little lackey.
Jennifer is clueless on what Keri was doing. She still seems like she might be just as clueless.

    • GymMom Says:

McKayla’s Instagram is pretty bad. Even fully clothed, she’s putting it out there.
