Well if she had to stop working out for a year (sorry, speaking about Shawn here) WHY is she posting all these workouts she’s doing? She was doing that months ago too and I had to ignore her because it was getting stupid. Nike fit band? But not working out? OK makes no sense at all. Whatever though, it’s not my life. I guess she had to pretend she was working out just like she was pretending to going to be showing us her new floor routine because her sponsors said so.

And Shannon is awesome. It would be fun if she made a comeback like maybe a decade ago but even at her highest difficulty level she wouldn’t make it today, which is really sad but at the same time, she owned the ’90s. Nobody else can claim that. She really did own the ’90s.

She looks amazing for having a baby like a second ago, too.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Shannon has good form and technique so I think she could easily do bars and beam ( During compulsories she hit her handstand all the time because it had to be to get a good score) and who knows what she could do with the new vault. Sher had a DTY in 96 on the old vault Steve wouldn’t let her compete because Peggy taught him. I think floor would be her issue but hell Nastia get a floor start value Miller could Old lady or not.

      Shawn confuses me.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I think Shawn’s making excuses and not telling the full truth. How she could work out/do DWTS/run/etc. but then all of a sudden “had to take a year off” because of “nagging injuries.” Nothing specific and all very vague, which to me means she just wasn’t really doing much and has to claim she was resting. I dunno.

Shannon has amazing form but it’s not like that helps with the judges anymore. Look at how the scored Nastia. And we all know even if she was only 30 or even 25 Marta would NOT let a comeback happen on Shannon’s part.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Marta would freak. Shannon would never make the camp let alone a team. Think of the fun we would have watching that.

      • Katie Says:

The Karolyi freakout would be amazing.

      • Gymbee Says:

Was there a video with the Shawn article?

        Hahaha she’s confusing.
She launched this new company “body dept”, which cracks me up. On Instagram they (she?) frequently regrams her “look at this genius, amazing idea Shawn had! Tying her key to her shoelace for running, wow!!”

Or “Shawn is our fitspiration today!”
I imagine her writing those things about herself and I just laugh and feel so bad for the girl.
Also, she was “living in Nashville already”? What was she doing there, just sitting around? I mean if she wasn’t in school and wasn’t training.

  2. JAS4 Says:

    4.5 twist is insane! Lol

  3. Melanie Says:

Doesn’t sound like Shawn and Nastia are all buddy-buddy anymore. Maybe it’s just me, but I detect a hint of resentment in the phrase, “Nastia Liukin, obviously she won everything.” Not a surprise or anything, but very different from the whole party line that “we’re best friends!!”

Here’s a link to some PT clips from the Russian Championships. Komova, Mustafina…woo-hoo! Though, Vika doesn’t look all that great on beam. It’s a short clip, though, so I can’t make too many judgments yet.

    • Katie Says:

      They were never buddybuddy

    • JAS4 Says:

Komova looks so different like her facial features have changed I almost didn’t recognize her I guess its because she looks older and more grown up now

    • Akshay Says:

Shawn and Nastia never got along, lol. Nastia doesn’t deal well with rivals. First it was Chellsie (see the incident at 2005 Worlds), and then it was Shawn. There were also rumors that Nastia slipped laxatives in Shawn’s drink before the BB EF in 2008. Not to mention, it is fairly confirmed that Nastia bullied Shawn. They were never friends. The most interesting thing for me is ASac. How she went from being friends with Nastia to not at all.

I laughed when she mentioned not talking to Nastia, and then Alicia’s wedding. I’m kind of seeing a hidden message there.

      • Katie Says:

Shawn and Nastia were never friends, that’s true. And yes, Nastia called Chellsie fat after the 05 aa and andy and valeri pretty much threw down in the practice gym the next day. Nastia never slipped Shawn a laxative (that rumor actually started on an obscure BI and carried over to CDAN). The original clique was asac (queen) then nastia, sam, and shayla. Shawn even gave an interview that ASac was bitter about losing DWTS spot to Shawn. They became friends during their comebacks in 2010 and both were resentful of the Nastia favoritism. The Shawn/Alicia friendship was not solid at all and ASac turned on Shawn when Shawn started giving press in early 2012 about how she was the only member o the 2008 quad with a legit comeback.
I am much more interested about the rumors that valeri put nastia on horomones in 2006 to speed up puberty and they pretended she had an ankle injury for a year but it was really to get puberty out of the way so she would have over a year to adjust.

      • Lyra Gill (@lygill) Says:

Actually, I would say that Alicia and Shawn got close around mid 2011, and not 2010. (This was around Classics and Nationals, and since Bridget was injured, Alicia and Shaw roomed together a lot.)
The whole Shawn talking about her how only she had a legit comeback happened in late 2010, and not 2012. (
I think they’re friends at least, since I do believe that Alicia invited Shawn to her wedding. (

It’s kind of scary how I remember all of these LOL

Nastia and Alicia stopped being all buddy buddy after Worlds 11 Team Finals. (AKA the date Nastia announced her comeback)
It’s kind of scary how I remember all of these LOL

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I was thinking it is very scary how you remember these I approved your other comment too. WordPress only allows one link before it thinks you are spam and I have to approve the comment.

    • Melanie Says:

Oh, I know they weren’t actually buddy-buddy, but there was the whole “We’re actually best friends” line that they both fed to the media for years when their rivalry was brought up. I just wonder at what exact point Shawn decided to quit lying about her relationship with Nastia. You know Nastia would probably still feed you that line.

  4. Katie Says:

Omg GymMom. Dying from that video. The double chin.

  5. uglyfatkid Says:

The Shawn link won’t work on my phone for some reason, so I’ll have to check that out tomorrow. It’s sounds like a good one. =]

That interview with Ponor was nice. I have always liked her for some reason, and her comment in regards to the beam tie breaker made me respect and like her even more. I love when people own their mistakes. What a classy response.

And Shannon is the best. That whole thing made be smile. If she isn’t coming back, can we at least get her to replace Nastia on NBC???

  6. GymMom Says:

The Shawn interview….I had to laugh at her comments about how she hasn’t been working out for the past year? Then who is @ShawnJohnson on Twitter who has been at boot camps; multiple gyms; 1/2 marathons; 5 & 10 mile runs?????

What were the vague answers about exactly what she was studying at Vanderbilt all about?

She said LA was too big of a city for her to live in but not Nashville, where she claims her “best friend” lives?? Who’s her best friend? Is that the guy who plays football at Vanderbilt?

Shawn, quit with your excuses and lies! We all can read and we HAVE seen the photos on Twitter and Instagram!

    • Gymbee Says:

Sometimes I wonder whether she has an eating disorder. Her weight yo-yo’s quite a bit, add to the fact that she’s studying dietetics and is someone who’s overly hung up in/interested in healthy eating and fitness.

I remember learning that eating disorders are more common among people whose whole lives/livelihood revolves around fitness.
It’s sad to see mean comments about her shape. I know you can say she’s “asking for it”, but still. I hope she’s not actually sick.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

If she had an eating disorder she would be losing weight so I don’t think that is it. I also don’t think she is fat by any means. She is short and like many of us we have to learn to eat what is right for us. She needs to learn that though its been 4 plus years you would think she could figure it out.

      • Gymbee Says:

I agree she’s not fat, just stocky. I don’t know, some bulimics go up and down a lot in weight.
Anyway, I’m sure she’ll figure it out at some point 🙂

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She hasn’t been down in weight since she stopped training. I don’t know. I hope she isn’t sick either. I am sure she is fine but Hollywood wants the thin type and if Shawn wants to be in Hollyweird she needs to be prepared for discussions like this.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Exactly. There are a lot of short people in Hollywood, and they are all thin and trim. They have personal chefs and trainers to keep them looking that way. It’s a job. Being thin and pretty is literally their job.

And any celeb that tries to say they are naturally skinny and have trouble putting on weight is full of shit. Especially if they are in their late 20s/early 30s. Christina Aguilera said the same thing a few years back when people criticized her for being too small but look at how she ballooned after her Burlesque movie/during her divorce. Uhhh gee Xtina guess you had some “fat” genes in you after all. Shocker. Not. Then she slimmed down and everyone praised her for it. It’s not that hard when you’re a multi-millionaire with time on your hands (you know, you’re not working a 9-6 job or anything) to hire a friggin chef and personal trainer.

The only way you get away with being fat, or should I say “normal” in Hollywood is if you are a comedian.

If Shawn wants to be a major celebrity or even just a C-level TV host she needs to slim down. The camera is not your friend. But that’s Hollywood, and it seems like Shawn wants to literally have her cake and eat it too (I’m not calling her fat, but yes she is too thick for Hollywood.) Accept it or not. We all know she’s capable of toning down; she just doesn’t want to. Not a problem in the real world but not acceptable for Hollywood.

Shawn knew she was going to be on a national tv show. She is in serious denial!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Wow – she’s actually chubby. I’m going to say it. It’s the worst I’ve seen her actually. No wonder she hides behind her “fitness” tweets but seriously if she’s going to do that she should have gone to work HARD before going for this TV show.

I guess I should have figured since she never shows photos of herself from recent days and if she does, they are all like waist or neck up and she is always wearing very baggy clothes or hiding behind very big bags/purses.

She definitely has her mom’s propensity to be fat. That means she has to work that much harder to be slim. I feel bad for her but at the same time, she’s the one that wants to be in the limelight so bad…

  11. gymnastwannabe Says:

I knew Shawn and Nastia were never friends and that Nastia was a *itch to Shawn. Who made them room together in China, though? I always thought that must have been stressful for Shawn. Perhaps Shawn has changed, but back then I believe she was genuine and bullied by Nastia and others. Shawn got the last laugh, though. Most people know Shawn’s name but Nastia is forgotten…that is why, imo, she needed to have a tournament named after herself. I don’t get why, though, Nastia is the one USAG and NBC have turned to. The world loves Shawn…guess Nastia’s family has connections.

    • Tortuga Says:

Can anyone actually give examples of how Nastia bullied Shawn? Besides just talking trash? We say it all the time on this blog that the term bullying is misused all the time by kids and parents these days so I’m just making sure this isn’t one of those same situations. And did Nastia say in an interview that Chelsie was fat or is it just word of mouth? Just curious.

      • GymMom Says:

Word on the street is that Shawn is and always has been a huge bitch! She has no friends. She is also a demanding diva.

In that interview Shawn kind of dissed the the 2012 team, while praising ASac. It was subtle but what happened to ‘my girls?’

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I’ve always been told Shawn was the quiet one that always felt the need to please everyone which explains the way she acted on twitter when Alicia called her out on her comeback comments which also IMO never had anything to do with Alicia and had everything to do with the Nastia saying she was coming back when at that time she wasn’t. She might have told the media she had not decided but inside the gym community the rumor was already circulating.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

A bully IMO is someone who uses their power to belittle you in the eyes of everyone else and that is what Alicia and Nastia did. They made everyone hate Shawn all because she beat them.

      • Tortuga Says:

What was said on Twitter, I missed all of that. I know that Nastia and Alicia have the capability of being mean girls I just didn’t know if there was anything concrete to the rumors.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Shawn mentioned she was picked on a long time ago I believe during her first DWTS stint ( Not on the show) and the stuff about Nastia and Chellsie came from GGMB a long time ago. They are true.

      • Gymbee Says:

Was it Shayla Worley that had a photo of herself, Nastia and some others on her fb, and someone asked “where’s Shawn” or something, and Shayla (I think) said “as if she would be here” or something to that effect. It came off as freezing SJ out and snotty. Sorry I can’t remember more.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It was either Shayla or Sam Peszek

      • Akshay Says:

LMAO it used to be on this picture, but I think Sam (six years later) finally deleted the “lol shawn would never be in this picture.”

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Nastia’s bitch comment is still up there. Sam didn’t delete that

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Someone needs to screen cap this picture as is for future reference

      • Akshay Says:

        Here it is!

      • Gymbee Says:

Haha thank you that was it!! Pure class those girls eh.

      • Case Says:

Shayla Worley is such a loser. Like she could ever hold a candle to Shawn (and I’m not a huge Shawn fan either.)

      • Tortuga Says:

I’ve seen that screen shot before. I still missed the twitter Alicia and Shawn thing. Shawn was such a sweet girl and all those girls were just jealous that she won just about everything in her senior career.

      • Akshay Says:

That’s why I always felt bad for Shawn. Imagine what it was like after Nastia beat her in the AA? I don’t even wanna know what was going through her mind.

      • Tortuga Says:

Exactly, but if anyone could handle that situation well it was Shawn. And besides she got her individual gold on beam and everyone thinks she won the AA gold and not Nastia. She also got the title of America’s Sweetheart after so kudos to her. She came out on top in the end.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah she did. She’s still getting more promotions than Nastia. Nastia just comes off as a cold hard bitch, and Shawn comes off as a warm, down-to-Earth nice girl (whether she really is one or not).

  12. JAS4 Says:
    MyKayla Skinner quad double
    That’s just crazy! Lol

  13. Akshay Says:

GTT, I’m hearing rumors that Brady Quinn might be signed by the Patriots as a third stringer. Lol, that’d make life easier for Alicia Sac.. er Quinn. ;D

  14. Melanie Says:

Vika’s return! She scored 15 on bars. And she got rid of that stupid half-turn.

    • Melanie Says:

Wait, watch this link instead…it doesn’t start and stop as much and you can see the full routine.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Wow. This was obviously easy for her too. Another reason why Kyla needs to upgrade, stat.

      • Melanie Says:

Yeah, she’s not even leading quals. She’s in 3rd behind Spiridonova and Rodionova. Mustafina caught her foot on a mat and took a deduction with a watered-down routine. There were some substantial gifts given out, though. Mustafina scored – get this – a 15.1 on floor with only three passes (though she did hit the triple turn in Y and a Gomez). She also scored a 15.4 on beam, which was overscored but a nice routine.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I saw her beam and it looked like a bunch of missed connections, but she stayed on. No way would that have been in the 15’s though at a Worlds event.

I heard she took out the triple twist on floor and substituted it with a bunch of really hard dance moves. I haven’t seen her floor yet though – is that online anywhere?

The Russians will dominate bars (and the Chinese) again it seems like. Maybe Marta knows that so isn’t focusing too much on bars, and is looking at vault and floor (I guess).

      • Melanie Says:

She did hit the split leap half-Onodi-double turn, so I guess that’s good. But definitely not 15.4-worthy. I think she scored something like 59.5 or something for the AA? Way too high.

Here’s her floor. She did take out the triple-twist. I’m kind of surprised that she’s only got three passes and is dismounting with a double tuck. She needs a bit more work controlling the triple-Y turn, but she at least got it around this time.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I (personally) thought she missed the split leap to Onodi part, but the Onodi to double turn was hit. There were a few others where I felt there was too long of a pause and in that other sequence (front layout, front layout, back handspring) I felt she paused too long between the second front layout and back handspring. What did you think?

And did she always do a back double tuck off of BB as her dismount? Why do I think she did a more complicated dismount before? She’s Kyla Rossing it lol.

Overall a solid performance though after the break from Worlds. I’ll have to watch this floor now, thanks for posting.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

I think she did a triple twist in 2010, but since the injury I think it’s always been the double back. I don’t remember anything different.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Ok a 15.1 for that floor is crazy – would be less than 14 I would think on the international stage. Her second pass was significantly under-rotated on the last 1.5 twist and her twisting form is still gawd awful. I wonder why she doesn’t do a double pike for her last pass or something. Ah well.

I do like her dance elements though. I’ve always liked Musty.

      • Karlie Says:

On floor, she did 3 passes, yes, but also competed a triple Y spin (E), quad turn/Gomez (E), and Memmel (D I think). The extra E element more than makes up for a tumbling pass; her d-score is still 6.1. However, I assume it was just because she’s just getting back into shape (she took a month off in January) so she’ll probably add a second pass back. The whips into the arabian will probably also come back since she paused awkwardly after the pass, waiting for the music to catch up.

Beam was in no way 15.4-worthy, though. Still pretty solid – I’d give her the switch 1/2-onodi-double turn and the first two front aerials, but not the BHS. However, it’s still early!

Also, I agree that Vika’s bars looked too easy for her. She downgraded the piked tkachev and Fabrichnova so maybe at some point she’ll bring them back.

      • Karlie Says:

lolz, wow, your comments didn’t show up before mine so mine is partially redundant…ah well.

that said, I hope she doesn’t bring back the god-awful triple twist. The first twisting pass should already be getting 0.4 off at least – 0.1 for crossed legs, but 0.3 for bent knees. Plus she did underrotate it here.

      • Melanie Says:

Floor – I think three passes is a smart move for Musty IF and only IF she hits all the dance elements. She’s never hit the triple-Y in a major comp, which is why we don’t call it a Mustafina yet. The Gomez is also pretty tricky. I don’t know if there’s another pass she could add, but for some reason (and it sounds crazy) a tumbling pass seems like a safer bet. Though, I thought her second pass looked awful.

Beam – I’d give her the switch 1/2-Onodi, but you’re right, the connection between the second aerial-BHS is really slow. She probably won’t get credited for that unless she speeds it up.

I just saw Komova on vault. She stuck with a FTY which she really rebounded out of. She seems to have plenty of power right now, so she’ll be back up to a DTY or Amanar in a matter of time. Haven’t seen her beam yet, but she only scored in the mid-11s on it, so there must have been fall(s). Did anyone else see Grishina’s beam? Not too hot. According to RRG, she looked miserable the entire meet.

  15. Ilanchik20 Says:

No Aly this year! I thought she’d have a good chance to make a World’s team this year!

    • uglyfatkid Says:

Wow. I was really hoping to see her this year. By her response in that article, it sounded like she wasn’t ready to me. If she isn’t going to make the World team, Marta/Mihai/Aly/Agent/Whomever is smart to postpone her comeback so it looks like she still has a shot and can be successful. She was the US golden girl from the Olympics (as much as they tried to shove Gabby down our throats…it didn’t take), and it’s wise to postpone until she is up to par with the rest of the girls. I think Marta learned from Nastia. LOL.

Other than getting back on a podium and feeling the pressure of competition again…if she doesn’t fill a spot right now on the team (cause she isn’t ready yet) what’s the point of rushing. I think it’s smart. I want to see her compete again, but I think it’s wise to wait.

Her comment about Jordyn was interesting. I keep holding out that we will see her again…but maybe we never will. I will still wait to hear that from her though. I will always be team Jordyn.

I also like how it skipped over giving ANY indication of Gabby’s commitment level…only that they are “texting”. LOL

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I’m sure Marta wants her to wait too so when she comes back it won’t be as watered down as it likely would have been. She’s probably twitching with excitement as to what kind of mental effed up mind games she can put the girls through the next 2 years…

      • uglyfatkid Says:

    • Melanie Says:

Yeah, I called this after Marta’s recent interview where she said that Aly was still conditioning and working on getting skills back. It’s a good call in my opinion. No way was she going to be competition-ready this year after so much time off. I’m much happier that she’ll take the time to do this the right way and polish all her skills/routines before taking on competition in 2015.
