Sarah Finnegan begin again

Sarah Finnegan competed in Hawaii a few days ago and it looks like she is on the mend.

Training a full twisting Pak salto and doing Nastia like floor routines (started with a layout as her mount)

You can watch more videos from the competition at this person’s youtube including Brenna Dowwell’s new move on bars (horribly done with a huge leg separation)

Natasha Kelly is getting married in five plus months and she now has a page for her Wedding. Find out who is in it and how the proposal went down.

Michelle Kwan interviews Ashley Wagner and talks about how she felt guilty being named to the team in 06. Damn media and idiot Hughes fans making her feel bad for taking a spot she created makes my blood boil and hearing Michelle say she felt guilty pisses me off. Not for her but for the people that made the girl that kept skating alive for years feel bad for taking the spot.

I do laugh that Ashley thinks Mao and Yuna are her rivals. She wishes but gotta believe that was a dig at Gracie.

LOVING the media interviewing the media. The Kween rules the planet. God I miss Michelle Skating. I think we should start a petition to have a skating exhibition for Michelle at worlds in 2016. Too bad Christine Brennan is doing the interview.

She wishes the media was the same as it was in 98

Rachael Flatt is going to be a doctor and this was her last Nationals. They apparently didn’t show her long program on TV but she did a pretty good job (falling once) and she cried when it was all over. Boston loves a sap story so they cheered. A lady gave Rachael flowers and at first she didn’t see her and went into the kiss and cry but when she heard the lady had flowers she came back out and gave her a hug.

A lot of people hate Rachael but I am not one of them. This kid is an actual nice person. She’s smart and she seems to have a lot of great support from a real family and just because a bunch of fat old wanna be gymnasts feel the need to knock her down at every level because they are jealous she is smarter than they will ever be doesn’t mean anything.

Good luck on your retirement Rachael.

This dress was really beautiful in person.

    Holy crap- Brenna Dowell’s release…Woof.

I’ve always been a Kwan fan as well…And her hair is SO SHINY AND PRETTY.

  2. Exgymgurl Says:

lol Finnegan looks ready for NCAA

  3. Karlie Says:

Ughh everyone is going on about the Wagner/Nagasu thing on social media and people keep going on about how it’s a race thing. No. Just no. Go away, people who don’t follow skating.

Granted I think it’s a stupid political decision, particularly with the whole weirdness with Frank Carroll (who coaches Gracie, and really likes Polina…and was apparently fired by Mirai last year…) I wish they’d taken Mirai over Polina…but that’s beside the point. It wasn’t racial, it was political, Wagner earned her spot, yaddi yaddi yadda.

    /end rant

    • mim Says:

with my complete lack of knowledge about the sport – polina looked clunky and awkward to me, and she didn’t seem to have any leg extension when she landed her jumpy things (this isn’t me being technical as I have no idea what is required, it just looked crappy to me and I wanted to grab her ankle and stretch her leg out every time!). it’s probably because of her figure as she’s all gangly. who knows but I found mirai more engaging and dynamic.

too bad if you’re ugly in this sport, all the girls look like Disney princesses.

so I’ve just discovered meryl davis and charlie white and now I’m questioning why I’ve never obsessively followed ice dancing before because they were so damn beautiful to watch. I think this will take my mind off Sarah Finnegan not looking as great as she used to.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

It’s all about jumping anymore in skating. They could give a rat’s ass for artistry and really making you “feel” anything. The days of Kwan are more than over and I doubt we’ll ever have anything like her ever again.

Polina looks all gangly to me as well but I’m guessing they’re taking her for her fearlessness. If Mao or Yuna mess up she could be there to steal a medal, who knows. Like the Terror or Hughes.

      • TrishaG Says:

The racism stuff is driving me nuts. It’s also driving me nuts that everyone is talking about this as Ashley over Mirai, when the main controversy for people who actually follow figure skating is selecting Polina over Mirai. Polina has never skated in a senior international event before, has limited international experience in general, and USFSA even had to check with the International Skating Union to see if her junior Grand Prix scores qualified for the minimum technical scores required for the Olympics and Worlds. Per ISU, junior scores qualify.

Polina is clunky and lacks extension because she skates like a junior. NBC and USFSA wants the media narrative to be Ashley vs. Mirai because that decision is defendible. They’re avoiding like hell discussing Mirai vs. Polina.

I agree, it seems like USFSA thinks they can get similar success to Tara and Sara if they send someone who’s a similar age. They are stupidly trying to capture lightning in a bottle again, which is why they latch on to every new jumping bean…until they fail to finish top-5ish immediately at Worlds. Then USFSA drops them for the next phenom instead of recognising that skaters need a few years to develop and progress internationally before they can threaten for medals.

Meryl and Charlie are fabulous! They’re the closest thing US figure skating has had to the Kween since she ended her reign. I love how they skate with complete abandon and speed but simultaneously controlled. Refined “balls to the wall,” if you will. 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

You should look up Torvill and Dean (I can’t remember how to spell their names completely accurately) but they defined what ice dancing is today.

Specifically look up their Bolero performance. Magic.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        @Trisha G – “Refined balls to the wall”…simply priceless. LOL. 🙂

      • TrishaG Says:

Thanks, uglyfatkid! Glad you enjoyed it 😉

    • Cee Says:

Oh God, the race thing*. That angle is driving me NUTS, I have to physically restrain myself from typing responses to stupid commenters on Yahoo. People, the last two Olympic gold medalists were Asian! Vancouver’s gold and silver medalists–who are the strong favorites for the top two spots this time as well and who have traded the top two spots at Worlds for like 6 years now–are Asian! Michelle Kwan, probably the most beloved and respected person in US figure skating, and who won COUNTLESS World and Olympic medals as well as–what six National titles?–IS ASIAN (Asian-American). And Mirai went to Vancouver. You obviously know *nothing* about the sport if you think there’s an anti-Asian bias. It just drives me NUTS–we have plenty of ACTUAL racism in this country, don’t make it up where it doesn’t exist!

“Then USFSA drops them for the next phenom instead of recognising that skaters need a few years to develop and progress internationally before they can threaten for medals.”

BRING BACK FIGURES. That is all. I know figures were to blame for poor Janet Lynn but they brought a special element to the sport.

*And I am definitely someone who is more suspicious than not about race in America, we still have a long way to go and race is very much a factor in a lot of our national dynamic. But not this time.

      • TrishaG Says:

I completely agree! I mean, the US Olympic team has 15 figure skaters and four are Asian-American. Nearly one-third of the team has Asian heritage, and this is the team people think is anti-Asian and racist??

  4. JAS4 Says:

Has anyone heard anymore about Ohashi? Is she or did she really go down to level ten? I haven’t heard anything about her in awhile then again i haven’t been on Twitter or tumblr in awhile lol

    • Tortuga Says:

I’m going to the WOGA Classic and so far she isn’t competing in the elite session. Which she could be not ready yet and waiting for later in the season or she really is dropping to level ten. I’m thinking more the later. But I know I’m selfish for wanting her to compete elite again. I imagine it’s exhausting to be barely under age for the games and knowing you have to stay in shape for four more years.

      • mim Says:

i have a feeling her focusing on level 10 and aiming for UCLA would be a healthier and happier option for her compared to elite. such a shame for us though!

bet valerie sucked her love of the sport dry.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

If Valerie was making it so awful she should have moved to another coach. I kind of blame her there if that were the case. I know there’s also politics involved though but if anything, you have the control to make your life happy and when most of your life is being spent doing something that makes you unhappy, something needs to change. She’s obviously making that change so good for her. Sad for us but at the end of the day I don’t think her body could have made it for another 3+ years without a major injury.

      • Akshay Says:

Sanity, with Valeri’s track record, I’m inclined to agree with you. Valeri doesn’t seem to understand that each gymnast has her own strengths, and that it’s important to capitalize on each individual’s strengths, and work with that. He instead tries to force them to fit the WOGA archetype (see Nastia). For example, I remember he was trying to get Katelyn to do all those pirouettes on bars, and I believe that’s part of the reason she injured her shoulder.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Agreed. The stupid thing is too, that the “Nastia” model DOESNT WORK. It only worked in 2008 because of cheating Nellie Kim and Biased judging. While a Nastia beam routine could be arguably competitive and good, the rest of her routines were less than spectacular. I’m sorry, but pirouetting 483 times on the high bar doesn’t equal a fantastic bar set. The Chinese had better release skills, form, and combinations AS WELL AS the pirouetting. Then you have her vault…which was a joke and a half. There is no way any future AA winner EVER wins a gold metal with a vault valued that low. And last but not least, floor. To this day I still cannot believe that she won a floor metal. Every pass was a twisting element except for her double front. To cap it all of too, she couldn’t do anything more than a 2.5 twist. As much as I dislike her, I will never say that she wasn’t talented in some regards. HOWEVER…her winning the AA and a floor metal was a joke. Those routines would never hold up now. Shawn’s would have, even with her crappy amanar. So…long rant short…modeling future WOGA stars off of Nastia is the most asinine thing ever. There will never be another chance for a “Nastia type” athlete to win the AA again. The field is way to deep for people to throw a 1 1/2 yurchenco (spelling?) vault and still expect to be competitive.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Totally – Nastia had so many pirouettes because the code at the time gave like a tenth of a point for every one, so I guess that’s why her bars set whored the shit out of them, and why she was able to score well into the 16’s with her routine.

If Shawn were capable today of what she was in 2008, she’d still be a factor in the game. Not so much for Nastia. Like you said, anyone with a 1.5 twist vault is at a severe disadvantage. Nastia was able to get away with that vault because of her whored out bars routine.

Her floor routine is another story. That Chinese girl totally got robbed of a medal there. Nastia winning a medal on floor was shear travesty. To be honest I don’t even think she should have medaled on bars – that should have gone to Yang Yilin or Beth.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Agree on all accounts Sanity….especially the floor metal. That Chinese girl was robbed hardcore.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That Chinese girl has a name. Jiang Yuyuan 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        I KNOW I can never remember it…dangit!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        lol

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Me too…I’m dreadful with names. And to make I worse, I’m horrible at spelling foreign names. I can barely even spell English names correctly. 🙂

Trust me when I say I mean no disrespect. She was a PURE JOY to watch in that Olympics. Her bronze metal win in 2010 was also great to watch. I was very sad when she retired. 😦

      • Tortuga Says:

I also think that she stayed at WOGA because this was her third (?) gym hop. Her parents may have said no more. It looks bad when you hop around too much. I’m also sure she is burnt out and peaked too soon.

  5. lovelucas Says:

Love Michelle and watched her win gold at 2003 World’s also in Boston. I was very impressed with her poise and complete comfort in yet another new role. RE not seeing another Michelle ever again – without a doubt that’s true – NINE national titles plus her grace, music interpretation and connection with the audience – but Jason Brown….he does come close. He was just such a joy at this competition.

    • uglyfatkid Says:

Agreed about Brown. From the first time I saw him on the Grand Prix, I have been a huge fan. I just hope he can keep it up and skate clean at the Olympics. Without doing quads, he needs to be perfect if he wants to metal.

    • Cee Says:

I have gotten a ton of my friends of Facebook to check out Jason Brown and they all love him! I am wondering if he’ll medal without a quad but I am hoping–hey, Evan WON without one, right? 😉

      • uglyfatkid Says:

That’s true, but I think there was less competition then. The mullet guy who came in second was a “jumper”, but I don’t think most people were doing 2 quad jumps in their LP. Now a days, 2 quads are common in the LP for the top men…and skating is like gymnastics now…the people with more difficulty tend to win.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The judges never judge the PCS on actual PCS. They tend to judge the jumpers higher in the PCS so when it is all said and done the jumpers win. Its pretty much what happens to execution when we get to the Olympics. The judge let the Gabby’s win even if their execution sucks eggs.

If the judges fairly took away the issues with the Gabby’s execution she would have been no where near Komova even with her issues on that Amanar.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Couldn’t agree more in both situations.

That is why I fear that Brown has to literally be flawless if he wants a chance at a metal. His presentation is wonderful, but without the harder jumps he starts the program off already behind point wise. If he has any issues, it’s mathematically impossible for him to metal unless everyone else also messes up a ton. In a lot of ways he’s like Kyla Ross. Presentation/execution is wonderful, but the difficulty doesn’t equal (or come even close) to some of the field.

But who the hell knows anymore? I thought Kyla would have more trouble than she did at worlds…so what the hell do I know? LOL.

  6. lovelucas Says:

Whoops! Got my competitions mixed up – Michelle won her last World Gold in D.C., not Boston. I was there for the Olympic Trials in gymnastics – Shannon Miller 😦

  7. lovelucas Says:

2003 World Championships (figure skating)were held in Washington D.C. I was there and have an art piece signed by Michelle.. Selection for the 2000 Olympic Gymnastics team (for Sydney) was held in Boston. I was there for that one, too. Also was there in 2004 in LA and 2012 in San Jose – all Olympic Trials.

  8. lovelucas Says:

Not trying to make anyone jealous – just clarifying since there may have been some doubt and no, I did not attend the 1996 trials. Did go to World Championships (gymnastics) in 1991 in Indy, though. Karoyli was all over the place socially and that’s when I was still judging and had those vip tickets to post competition gatherings.

  9. Lithi Says:

About Natasha, if she’s happy, cool, but that kind of stuff is just too narcissistic for my taste. Not to mention the registry. (I guess I should be thankful they’re not soliciting funds for their wedding.)

The folks at Etiquette Hell would probably rip her a new one for the registry bit. I truly hate the racket weddings have become.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I guess its the new thing to do. It doesn’t bother me as much as these engagement pictures people do. When did that start?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Even worse now are the pregnancy photos! My friend had hers done right before delivering and one showed a lot of side boob…it was kind of disgusting. And of course shared all over FB. I just scratch my head these days on what people want to post…

  10. lovelucas Says:

Just learned about this – from Jenny Kirk and partner’s blog: Wagner to return to Samson and Delilah with a new dress and this year’s jump layout. and evidently Black Swan is out due to a change in requirements plus it’s an older program.

  11. Lithi Says:

Just found this article from the New Yorker, they’re calling the skating selection BS as well: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/sportingscene/2014/01/figure-skatings-rough-justice.html?utm_source=tny&utm_campaign=generalsocial&utm_medium=twitter

    • lol Says:

NY media is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the truth. They make stuff up and don’t deserve to be mentioned.

  12. uglyfatkid Says:

For those of you who are interested, the European Figure Skating Championship started. I caught the ladies SP. Adelina Sotnikova is in 1st (she’s the Russian skater with dark hair who always wears gloves during her skates). Julia Lipnitskaia is in 2nd (she’s the little Russian girl who looks like she’s 12). Costner is in 3rd (She’s the tall Italian girl who is boring a hell to watch).

At this rate, i think I want one of the Russian girls to take bronze at the Olympics. If the older one can skate cleanly, I would imagine it would be her.

NOTE: I goggled the names of the Russian skaters so GTT doesn’t reply with…”the Russians have names too.” Lol.

    PS – Only joking GTT.

    • uglyfatkid Says:

      Lol. Googled…not goggled. Fail. 🙂

    • TrishaG Says:

It’s almost a tradition for Russian skaters to wear gloves. Lipnitskaia wears flesh colored gloves in her SP, actually. Hard to tell, right? It’s only when there’s a close up of her hands and you notice she doesn’t have any fingernails that you realize she’s wearing gloves, lol. I think it’s to protect their hands when they do catch foot spins and spirals.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

I think you are right, it is probably for the spins. Yea, you don’t even notice until the do a close up on her that she is even wearing any.

I didn’t realize that other Russians wear them too?

      • TrishaG Says:

Yeah, pretty much the norm for Russian single skaters. Men and women. The pairs and ice dance teams don’t, though. I guess because of the holds?

It’s funny, even non-Russian skaters will often start wearing gloves when they train with Russian coaches. Then they stop if they go to non-Russian coaches again. Mao Asada did with Tarasova, Adam Rippon and Daisuke Takahashi did with Morozov. So maybe there’s some other significance behind Russian glove-wearing…? I dunno.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

That’s so interesting! I had no idea!

  13. biyatch Says:

Someone was saying if Finnegan adds a double pike and gets all her connections that beam routine would have a 7+ D score. A lot of those connections were extremely iffy though but its early in the year. World selections this year could be absolutely fascinating.

Judging from instagram/twitter it appears Aly has signed a deal with Reebok. Kudos to her representation being able to pull out a deal with a major brand mid quad.

The sports marketing is fascinating. In the fierce five endorsement deal context its an interesting move. Mac & Jo have adidas, Gabby has Nike and GK and now Aly has reebok and GK. Reebok is under the adidas umbrella but I guess viewed as a separate company. Adidas/alpha factor and GK/under armour are in direct competition but I guess since Nike and Reebok don’t have gymnastic brands they can coexist with GK. It also appear that Under Armour (which has the right to make matching offers to national team members under the national team contract) is content to just sponsor the national team as opposed to any individual athlete.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Finnegan should never get credit for any of her connections. Guess it is going to take a worlds meltdown score to wake Marta up on Sarah.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

what do you mean by wake Marta up on Sarah? (I don’t get the context – like Marta likes Sarah too much or too little?)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Sarah reminds me of Courtney Mcool. She is a beautiful gymnast but when it comes down to it never deserves credit for any of her beam connections. If she ever does go to worlds her 7 start value will never get credited and she will be scored accordingly hence Marta will see she is not as valuable as she thinks.

IMO Sarah never should have been named to the Olymnpic team (alternate) last year because he beam is overrated much like Mccool.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Makes sense. I actually enjoy Sarah’s floor much more than her beam. Her beam was always iffy in my opinion, and I never could have faith she wouldn’t make a mistake.

I really don’t know if she’ll ever be on the elite scene again anyways. She could be just back in action vying for a college scholarship.

      • mim Says:

I agree, I loved Sarah’s floor so much more than her beam.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Under Armour used to sponsor ASac; wonder why they stopped sponsoring athletes after that. I thought Maroney would be a good fit for them but she has adidas…

      • biyatch Says:

Well they sponsor the national team now, they might consider that enough exposure in the gymnastics arena, no need to go after individual athletes. When the sponsored Alicia she was their only in in gymnastics and she could only wear their products at domestic meets (although not even totally because they had to wear national team leos at trials.)

  14. GymMom Says:

Grace Gold is the white Gabby Douglas. Just watched her on Leno. She’s so fake and full of herself. Gag!!!! Please God, don’t let her take gold in Sochi. Thank you!!!!

    • mim Says:

I know nothing about her aside that she won. I can see her being full of herself judging her reaction after she skated. All I think is Disney princess when I see her, she looks like she could burst into song and have animated blue birds fly onto her arm in a split second.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

LMAO Mim. She’s the pretty blond so if she wins a medal the media will love her. Notice no one is bringing up her racist tweet. Imagine if Ashley had said that.

      • Karlie Says:

Wait, what? Racist tweet?? What happened there?

I’d imagine that if Ashley had tweeted it – whatever it was – there would have been a shitstorm.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

There’s no way she’ll win gold unless everyone else makes major mistakes and she happens to not fall. I agree though she’s overly confident.

And she looks like Disney’s Cinderella. I know what her job post skating should be.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I almost started a Shawn blog to drag you out of your non posting existence.lol Welcome back.

I get the same impression of Gracie. She is full of herself and is attempting to play the role of nice girl.

Don’t worry Yuna Kim still exists and thankfully she will make sure Gracie wins no gold medal.

  15. Rose Says:

I am so confused about all the Gracie hate. It seems like it is becoming an Ashley vs Gracie issue. I like both. I don’t see her coming across as full of herself. I think she is confident as is Ashley. Please don’t be fooled by Ashley. She can be just as fake. She was sitting at one point waiting backstage for Gracie to skate and as soon as the camera was on her she started to clap and smile. I think USFSA has just rehearsed Gracie to death for interviews and that is all I see. I am rooting for both to do well at the Olympics:)

    • gymtruthteller Says:

No one is defending Ashley her bad attitude is well known but that has nothing to do with the way she is being treated right now by every 4 year fans.
No one is letting her enjoy her chance at the Olympics and that disgusts me. She earned the spot on the team.

Gracie isn’t the sweet little girl everyone is making her out to be either. Thanks to gymnastics I watch people at these meets and competitions and lets just say the whole hugging on the podium doesn’t mean these girls even say a word to each other when the camera is not around.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

What’s even worse is the pressure Ashley will face at the Olympics. If she falls or messes up everyone will be like “see, should’ve taken Mirai.” She really needs to be in the top 8 if she wants to avoid that, sadly.

And the issue is not Ashley vs. Mirai…it was always (and should’ve been promoted as such) Polina vs. Mirai. I have a feeling Polina won’t do so well at the Olympics.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

My guess is that Ashely is going to head case. The pressure of nationals got to her, and with this added media crap I don’t see her dealing with it well at the Olympics. My prediction is Gold will place over her. I hope I’m wrong though. For her sake, I hope she can pull it together.

Unless Mao and Yuna implode, I don’t think we will see an American on the podium. I was hoping for it earlier in the season, but I am not sure it’s possible to be honest.

  16. Exgymgurl Says:

Usagym camp starts Monday. Guess I now have to deal with cable to watch NCAA…. Georgia beat LSU at home, can’t wait to watch that one.

  17. uglyfatkid Says:

Holy hell. Did anyone else see Mirai’s performance on the smuckers skate craptacular that aired today? It’s the show to celebrate the winners at nationals. She mounted the ice in tears, obviously heartbroken that she isn’t going to the Olympics. The audience stood as she mounted, and clapped for quite sometime. She struck her pose crying, and held it there why everyone continued to clap. It was quite moving. She skated beautifully…it was full of emotion. She finished and cried more as she bowed. It was beautiful, yet hard to watch. My heart goes out to her.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Not a fan of sap stories sorry. I know heartless bitch that I am:)

I wanted Mirai ahead of Polina and even booed her not being ahead at Nationals but she can’t expect to show up once a season and get an Olympic spot.

Apparently she has been lazy and half ass training for years which is why Carroll was fine with them parting ways.

      She needs to grow up2

      • uglyfatkid Says:

You’re not a heartless bitch. A cold hearted blogger at times maybe, but certainly NOT a heartless bitch. After all, only the Nastia fans are truly heartless. 🙂
Having watched it though, i thought it was awesome how the crowd reacted. I have always like Mirai, and thought it was a nice “send off.” If she never competes again, (and I hope she doesn’t) it was nice to see the crowd react the way they did one last time. Sap or not, I liked it. 🙂

  18. tulip Says:

So I saw a preview of the Lifetime movie about Gabby. I’m dying to see what the source material is and how they will present her relationship with her father. Mostly though I wonder if they’ll show Natalie as the grifter that she seems to be.

  19. Exgymgurl Says:

So hannah finnegan went with the family to hawaii, and is not competing gymnastics for Missouri, but is all of a sudden a student coach. Is that a medical retirement considering she had a scholarship?? wierd….as a freshman

    • Triple Twist Says:

Hannah Finnegan was listed as a student coach months ago. In fact, I don’t think her name was ever even on the roster at Mizzou.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I have a bone to pick with you. How dare you interview Nastia and not come to me for questions.lol Shame on you

  20. Exgymgurl Says:

Oh and dominique Dawes got married last summer and is pregnant…. Its on her twitter, but apparently shes not Shannon so she doesnt get the coverage… LOL

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Coverage from this blog? Hell no. Her ugly ass bow legged baby won’t be saving USA-gymnastocs in the future. Though she is very pretty so depending on the husband the kid will probably be beautiful.
