Nominee for Sportsperson of the year : Aliya Mustafina

Gotta love how Aliya looks like crap at Worlds until its for a medal and then she pulls off things like her beam routine in the Event Finals.

Winning a Gold medal on her worst event (beam) and taking third in the AA as well as winning the AA at the World University games Aliya is the next nominee for Sportsperson of the year.

I thought she did well at Worlds especially considering how things were going for Russia with all the injuries and people getting sick and not to mention she probably had Valentina breathing down her neck the whole time

Considering she has world team AA and event medals in veery possible event and has only been a senior since 2010 I think shes the best gymnast of this era overall. Olympic or world gold team bars beam and AA and world silvers vault / floor . I think shes the most accomplished active gymnast. I think shes a gamer and brings it when Komova, Grishina, Iordache dont in a way that cnt be quantified. Other than by her massive medal hauls. And we forget she was hurt at worlds….

Agreed – she’s pretty amazing. Plus with all of the drama that’s been going on in Russia lately it’s pretty impressive that she’s managed to keep competing the way she has been. Especially since Russia was apparently told to prioritize Universiade above anything else and she basically had to peak twice – once for Universiade and once for Worlds.

Now if she’d only take out that triple twist on floor…🙂

I just honestly put her in the same category as Miller, and Khorkina. It will be really interesting when she gets another olympics, Id love to see her healthy and truly peaked for Rio. She knows how to get the job done. If $imone keeps up she could be like Aliya, a true AA gymnast. But she doesnt have the track record yet. If Bailey Key gets a second vault shes another true threat on all four events. The girl just doesnt lose, and just brings it. Marta loves that. I think The only girls even in contention for Rio are Bailey, $imone, Kyla, McKayla, Jordyn and Aly, Katelyn if she comes back, and two other random juniors. Im sure Marta has a group of 9-10 in her mind and the rest are just window dressing. between injury and consistency Id say thats the pool of the olympics. I don’t see any of MLTs gyymnasts making rio.

I don’t. (We are talking about Aliya right?) If she wants to be a legend she needs to beat better competition. If Larissa and Yao didn’t fall she would have been 5th this year at worlds. I really think her time is starting to pass for no other reason then her body is breaking down. I forget that she isn’t that old.

I will never add any gymnast competing today to the past list of greats because only having 3 people who could win an AA is not impressive to me compared to what before 96 had to compete against

Aliya always pulls it out, I don’t think shes going down hill. I don’t think shes injuring out. I think shes highly determined to medal in another olympics. people always fall. Shannon fell, Dawes fell all the time. That doesnt make her gymnastics better or worse. She does what needs to be done to win. When it counts. Like Shannon did. Shannon wouldnt have won if other people didnt falter.

@Exgymgurl – Why do you put the $ in Simone’s name? (“$imone”??) Is she greedy or something?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        She is probably on her

I agree with GTT but I do admire Aliya’s determination and toughness. She does seem to be struggling to keep her skills; 2010 was her “true” peak. If she hadn’t injured herself in 2011 I bet she would have won the Olympics, she was just that good. But in all honesty it was like she peaked too soon. Going for too many things, way too fast. She could’ve benefited from the mindset of Kyla’s coaches in 2010/2011 – she didn’t need to pull out all the shots at once. That said I do hope she can stay in it because she brings a “fire” to the competition floor that nobody else does (in Russia). Komova craps out way too easily and the others are all headcases.

Per wogymnastike, nabs has decided to retire.

It comes from one of her accounts, sprashivai. Odd timing. I’m inclined to believe this hasn’t been fully confirmed yet.

Could there be a chance she is announcing that next year will be her last year to compete?
