Nominee for Sportsperson of the year : Mckayla Maroney

No one knew what to expect from Mckayla Maroney when she announced she would be going to “Camp” earlier this year and I would have to say she exceeded expectations. National Champion on vault and Floor and World Champion on Vault as well as placing 6th in the AA at worlds in prelims Mckayla had the type of year any gymnast would be proud of so I felt the need to include her as a Nominee for Sportsperson of the year.

I agree. Still haven’t seen the debacle regarding her floor routine at Worlds but to come back to reclaim the vault title is pretty awesome after the Olympics and after going through injuries/surgery. She’s going to have to be more than a one-trick pony going forward though because there’s an immediate threat of being de-throned by Simone Biles for vault and Simone is also scary good in the AA, whereas McKayla is still obviously weak on bars and beam. Marta’s not going to waste two spots on these small teams when she can get an AA threat AND vault gold in one. I think McKayla’s best bet is getting a TTY around. On top of that she’ll have to improve her bars/beam greatly but if she can finesse that TTY vault I think Marta might save a spot for her in addition to Biles for that reason alone. Marta seems to like vault specialists.

I think if McKayla gets the TTY, that’s her ticket to Rio (assuming she trains until then). If Simone and Maroney both have TTYs in Rio + a solid Amanar, then the US has a ginormous vault advantage, which will be tough for teams to overcome without falls.

If McKayla gets the TTY as long as she’s not injured come Olympic Trials 2016 she will be in the picture and quite possibly going again. She’s so consistent that she would get a 16.5 on a 16.8 vault easily which is just INSANE.

Plus her floor is great. It’s awful that the timing issue cost her at this years Worlds. I really liked that routine. She definitely could have medaled in the finals. I think that might be enough for her in 2016. You never know what’s gonna happen with Simone over the years as she grows and gets older but I think since she’s an AA gymnast she won’t be throwing a triple for awhile still.

I read on another site that her goal for 2014 is to improve in the AA amd make the worldteam. Her whole bar and beam routine needs to be redone.

I think McKayla needs the TTY as well especially if Simone upgrades her second vault

So according to IG, Mckaylas so called minor knee injury is actually bone fractures to her right patella. Isn’t this the injury from the tour that she had surgery on?

    • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

No that injury was breaking her tibula in that leg I believe? Could be wrong. This one was in her knee. It was taped up during Worlds so not too surprising that’s where the injury was. The article said she’s back to training again.

The article also said how they had to film that tumbling sequence about 70 times in a row, so that explains why all the gymnasts did such simple skills. I remember someone here had mentioned it. I’m glad I don’t work in film that would get so old so fast.

Yeah I’d hate working on a TV show…one time when I was younger I went and watched a live taping of an episode of Full House (I was in 5th grade and LOVED that show)…I couldn’t believe how long it took to film not even 20 mins of TV! Some of the scenes had been previously shot outdoors, so it was probably like 18-20 minutes of actual TV time considering a half-hour show is really only 23 minutes when you count commercials. We didn’t leave the theatre/stage set until well past midnight and we had to be there at some stupid hour like 3 or 4 p.m. on a weekday. I remember thinking last time I’ll be doing that.

They literally tape each scene over and over and over…it’s kind of stupid. There was also the issue of there being 3 children on the show (Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen and 2 of Uncle Jesse/Aunt Becky’s twin boys) and they said their lines after it was yelled to them by someone from the side of the stage. That part wasn’t that bad, but I just thought it insane how many times they film the same scene. If I were the actor I’d get bored after a while…and even after the first sequence sometimes I’d be like “wasn’t that good enough? Why’d they have to go through it so many times?” – I guess (later I found out) they take each scene from different camera angles and then afterwards select which one is the best.

What episode did you see filmed?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

It was soooo long ago I don’t even remember. There was a scene with one of the uncles performing in a band in the cafe. You know what’s funny I was so damaged by the whole thing I never ended up watching the episode on TV.

I met Jodie Sweetin twice – once at a summer camp thing (we were really little and this was before she kind of made it big) and another time she signed an autograph for me. She wasn’t ever really a nice person – a big time snob with her nose in the air. She never did anything “mean” to me but she ignored you if you weren’t good enough. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Say it ain’t so. Stephanie was a bitch? I think it was you 🙂

Not surprised at all. Big headed kids getting a little fame

      • Tortuga Says:

OMG you went to a taping of Full House! That’s so awesome. I’m sure being there that long would be exhausting though! I think it’s a bit ridiculous that they have to do that many takes for such a short scene. It’s strange to think about how much time goes into making television and film. And speaking of Jodie Sweetin check out the youtube video I saw recently. It’s hilarious.

      • Catherine Says:

I mentioned repeating the tumbling line :’) That would be pretty exhausting ughh.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That’s an awesome video, lol. The taping I went to Jodi Sweetin was about 13/14 so she was older (she’s a year or two older than I am) – so it was one of the last seasons of FH – in fact I’m pretty sure it was the season before it was cancelled. I was about 11 or 12, and I think it was cancelled when I was 13.

I remember it was really cool when all the actors walked out on-stage one at a time as they were introduced in the beginning. Both Michelles also walked out, lol.

I don’t even remember what happened in the finale of the series either. Dang it was so long ago; does anyone remember what happened in the finale? And why is this bothering me?

      • JAS4 Says:

Michelle hit her head after he fell off a horse and lost her memory and couldn’t remember anyone in her family but she gets her memory back and Steve and DJ get back together and go to DJ’s prom
