Welcome to the big leagues Simone and Kyla

Welcome to the big leagues Simone and Kyla

Welcome to the Big Leagues Simone and Kyla. Where when you accomplish something wearing red white and blue you automatically become overrated and undeserving of your win. (Technically she wore pink but….)

Back in 1991 when Kim Zmeskal won the World Title people said she didn’t deserve it because she wasn’t “artistic” enough like Svetlana Boginskaya. The Russians said if anyone should win it should be Shannon Miller because she is like a “Soviet” until you know she went out there and won in 1993 and 1994 and then they said she didn’t deserve her wins either.

It doesn’t matter how good you are if you are an American and you beat a Russian or a Romanian you are automatically not good enough. Its par for the course.

It works both ways though because back in 1992 when Shannon Miller was blatantly cheated out of the Gold medal she earned on the floor “artistry” wasn’t what was important to Europe (mostly the Russians and Romanians) It was skill level and Gutsu had more difficulty so even though she nearly put her hands down attempting to do a double layout with a split that didn’t matter because it was a difficult skill. Yet some how Simone Biles didn’t deserve her beam medal because she landed low and stepped forward even if it was a full in she was trying to stick.

I don’t know who should have won the medal on beam because I have not watched the final. The problem I have here is that depending on the situation the Russian fans seem to change their minds based on what Country the gymnast competes under.

Nastia deserved to beat Shawn because she was “artistic” according to Khorkina (and don’t give me the bull shit they were both Americans. Nastia is a Russian) Viktoria deserved to beat Gabby because she was artistic yet Gutsu deserved to beat Shannon because she was a power gymnast. Now here we are again with Simone.

Pick a damn side and stay with it. You cannot have it both ways.

Case I feel your pain now, literally.

    What GTT said!!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I had a much better start to this blog while attempting to work at work today but when I got home I had lost it all. I blame it on baseball.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I watched part of a game this past weekend. You have an awesome closer pitcher. You’re probably like “no shit” but I don’t pay attention to baseball when the Angels and the Twins suck.

  2. sainabou nyang Says:

The funny thing is that the Russians have many gymnast with fugly ass form. You have paseka and nabs with some of the most hideous form on vault and musty for all her artistry so to speak has terrible form on twisting and even in the air in vault.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I mentioned Russian fans a lot but it is really all of Europe. They hate when we beat them at anything.

      • Karlie Says:

Ahahaha I love Nabs’ preflight vault, it’s so incredibly, awesomely fugly. Paseka’s is close but even she can’t catch Nabs in that department.

    • Gymbee Says:

Yes, but “artistry” doesn’t count on vault. According to their logic. Nor does it count on helicopter legs.

      • exgymgurl Says:

We need to get rid of artistry and stick with execution of movement. Its like people who whine that Larissa fell on beam….. she is the Pitic of this quad the way shes headcased at worlds / olympics. I used to like Larissa until I noticed her flat feet and bad form. But shes similar in her badness to Mustafina. So maybe the trick is to have the same type of flaws the Europeans have.

I still want to see MaKayla Skinner at worlds….she is the epitome of everything the rest of the world hates us for and shes not as good as See-Money Biles, so the world would have her to pick on and stay away from Kyla and Simone

      • gymnerd Says:

“See-Money”? I get the play on words, but have I missed something?

  3. Case Says:

Love this blog post. I think you stated the issue perfectly.

Hating baseball right now. Bats went cold at the wrong time. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t want to talk baseball. The Red Sox are doing everything they can to give me a heart attack

  4. uglyfatkid Says:

I get pride for your country, but people take national pride way to far some times. While I am happy with the metal standings at worlds (super happy for Simone and Kyla), I am also saddened at the mistakes that happened. Yao on bars in EF (that Mo was breathtaking in AA) and also the fall on the standing full on beam during the AA. Had she competed in EF, would we have had a different result? Larissa on beam…she’s not my fav, but I would have liked her to hit. The new Chinese athlete, who fell on beam. And last but not least, Sandra on floor.

Though I do not root for these girls every meet, I do want them to do well. I want it to be a fight to the end. The fact that the AA was a runaway was disappointing to me. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted Biles to take it…but I wanted it to be close. Jordyn and Vika close. In the end…I just want a great competition with everyone hitting…where you are biting your nails till the last second.

Did Biles and Ross deserve those metals? Yes. They fought for every tenth…artistry or not. It is not their fault that others fell apart when it counted. BUT…had those people hit…would everything still be the same? Probably not. In the end, it shows us that Kyla needs to upgrade (shocker), and that Biles needs to fine tune her execution if they want to stay in the game long term. Regardless of what they need to do in the future, those two deserved every thing they got. Period. End of story.

    • Katie Says:

      Omg the MO.

    • exgymgurl Says:

Had she attended all of her podium practices would there have been a different result? I dont know and I dont speculate. There is potential like Nastia on bars at 2012 trials where there was potential and no execution of said potential…… Larissa and all the rest of them are not able to execute consistently on their potential.

  5. exgymgurl Says:

I heard on the last day for podium practice only the americans used their time. And they put in more effort and won more. I know. Its shocking. The americans also understood the code, and after Aly Raismans beam at the olympics and the AA where they thought they werent credited they had protest papers ready. Again. Its shocking

    • Dee Says:

It sounds like team USA was the only team a few times to use their training time. The tumblr article linked in the last post said it all for me: USA came like it was the Olympics, everyone else showed up like it was just the worlds after the Olympics. Add that to the fact that not everyone used all their allotted training time and what is there for people to fight over right now?

The hardest part about gymnatics is that it is so subjective. The power vs. Grace and artistry debate will never be won. Fans from all countries just need to appreciate when someone hits and acknowlege that there are gymnasts with talent from every country. Obviously I like for the USA to do well because that’s my country but I also cheer for gymnasts from other countries. Those that can’t do that miss out on enjoying gymnastics to the fullest, which I believe is appreciating different countries styles and strengths.

If this worlds did anything, I think it showed that the worlds after an Olympics isn’t less serious than any other worlds. It’s about time!

      • nero Says:

Ugh I can’t stand the “Simone sucks she could never have a bar routine like Aliya, or leaps like Komova or dance like Afan this is ARTISTIC gymnastics!!!”

It takes everything inside of me not to comment back “How many of your ballerina babies can vault like Simone, have a dismount on beam like Simone or have tumbling on floor like Simone???”

Skills are a part of gymnastics. Appreciate what all of these different gymnasts bring to the table. Do we really want everyone doing yurchenko fulls and double backs on floor set to the music of Swan Lake?

Crossed ankles and some flat feet aside Simone has AMAZING form. Her tucked skills are some of the most beautiful I’ve seen. And just like Jordyn her leaps are perfectly acceptable. Just because she’s a ‘power’ gymnast they automatically go blind and see 30 degree leaps.

I hope Simone continues to do well, you know you’re great when you have people on the internet obsessed with trying to bring you down.

      • Tortuga Says:

Everything Dee said is dead on. I love the USA and root for them. But I’m not only for USA gymnasts. If I like you style and technique I’m going to want to watch and root for you. Jessica Lopez for instance. Beautiful gymnast. I love to watch her. It’s sad that she kinda freaks out under pressure though.

    • tulip Says:

If indeed any team opts out of podium practice, I can only imagine that the judges would not see that as a positive thing.

    • Case Says:

Exactly! If the US puts in more work, don’t be surprised when they win. Not surprised the US came in treating this like an Olympics. Gymnastics is no joke in the US and if those girls didn’t take it seriously, there are many more waiting in the wings for a shot.

I’m still mad at Italy. Go screw yourself Carlotta.

      • Dee Says:

The Italy thing is still bothering me. I know gymnastics is ruthless but she crossed a line.

      • Short1 Says:

@Dee Agreed. It’s one thing to be displeased with the results, judging, etc., but there’s no excuse for talking about another gymnast(s) that way.

      • Flippateer Says:

I have never wished anyone in the sport of gymnastics ill before, but I sincerely hope that Carlotta Ferlito never ends up on a medal podium ever again (whatever color she may choose to paint her skin) and has to stand on the ground looking up at podiums filled with superior gymnastics of all skin colors. I honestly wish that that level of racism led to automatic disqualification from future competition.

      • Karlie Says:

That crossed a line. The facebook comments it got were, disturbingly, very supportive of her. Embarrassed to be Italian.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

What happened? Sorry I’m not up to speed on this one.

      • Karlie Says:

After the AA she made some comment along the lines of “apparently i’ll have to paint my skin black to win a medal now,” a reference to Simone/Gabby’s medals and blatantly implying that judges favored Simone because she is African American.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

What a racist Ahole. What the hell too? Both Kyla and Musty are not African American? It’s not a race thing honey…you just suck at gymnastics and can’t make the podium.

  6. exgymgurl Says:

Well I think the difficulty needs to be capped at 6.0 and the execution needs to be 12 so its 2/3 max score. Like have the Prudonova and the TTY be 6 rated vaults, and back the amanar off to a 5.7 and the dty to a 5.4. See better vaults, and fewer injuries. Scale everything back. This will differentiate people better. And Pena will stop trying to kill herself.

    • gymnerd Says:

Sounds like going back to the 10 system, in a way. (Not that this would be bad.)

    • Case Says:

      I’d support this code change.

    • Dee Says:

I like this idea for vault. I’d so much rather see more gymnasts do clean DTY’s than messy Amanars and I’d really rather see Pena do a lovely Amanar and bag the Prudonova.

      • exgymgurl Says:

I think it rewards difficulty but not so much so that difficulty overshadows good quality gymnastics. It would also balance all four aparatus scores so that it would be clear what a 18 potential routine was and was not. If you could score 18 on all events, execution would distinguish the top 10 gymnasts moreso than connections and bonuses…. I would love to see a beam routine that was not mount leap leap skill pose… leap skill leap pose. turn skill skill pose breathe leap skill skill dismount

  7. nero Says:

People are just pressed. DON’T read the comments on Simone’s and Kyla’s youtube videos from worlds. They are some of the most vile hateful things I’ve ever seen, especially considering how genuinely sweet, friendly and over all great kids Simone and Kyla are. Mustafina would be embarrassed if she saw how her fans behave.

And can we just stop for a second and appreciate Kyla Ross? Simone winning was not a surprise at all. But Kyla beat the ~Queen~ when Aliya had an amazing day. Kyla beat a world and European champion and Olympic bronze medalist by A LOT.

If a month ago someone said Aliya would stick her vault, connect all of bars elements, have a pretty good beam routine and a great floor routine and she would lose to Kyla Ross how many people would believe them??

I so wish she would have stuck her dismount on beam to become world champion but Kyla besting Aliya Mustafina 2 out of 3 times is amazing because Aliya is an amazing gymnast.

And Matt Baker from BBC said Kyla is now his, and his mom’s, favorite gymnast ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Dee Says:

I just am baffled as to how people have such a hideous attitude towards Simone or Kyla. Simone showed such good support for all the gymnasts this Worlds. When was the last time we saw a gymnast hop up on the podium to give the medalists a huge squeeze instead of shaking hands, regardless of what country they are from? She even made Mustafina smile while she had a bronze medal in her hands, for crap’s sake. Kyla and her coach stand on the sidelines and cheer others on. They both had solid routines. I mean, good lord. What’s done is done, all this bashing is so ridiculous. I guess I was not all that aware that people were so crazy out there, haha. Scary!

  8. Catherine Says:

At least it’s not controversial since Simone was untouchable. She lit up the arena and was so much fun to watch. Yes even her choreography because she smiled and expressed the hell out of it and her music just worked better in the arena.

I don’t think I’m sad I’m home. Still processing everything and I haven’t watched the AA back yet. I’ve already found us in footage though which is fun. The atmosphere in the arena was just fantastic, great crowd.

  9. mimi Says:

i really dont like the grace versus power ‘debate’… kyla might be built to be more slender but she’s got some power in her to do any of what she does! simone might be MORE powerful but she’s up on a beam tumbling around precisely, not looking like an idiot or falling over every 5 seconds, or swinging nicely on bars.. she’s graceful enough i think. sure, i gravitate to more ‘dancer-esque’ gymnasts but hell all these girls put their heart and soul into their sport and they should be appreciated.

i truly hope these two stay off social media and blissfully go along their way to more medals, good education and more wonderful experiences.. something most of these anonymous idiots will never come close to in their lifetime.

you go simone and kyla coco (and none for carlotta ferlito BYE).

  10. mimi Says:

off topic – just watched the vault finals (in chinese no less), and mckayla and simone seemed pretty frosty with each other after the final as they were herded off the podium. moreso from mckayla’s end.. i could be totally reading into nothing though but they usually seem pretty friendly and happy-go-lucky together.. unless they had game face as another event final was close after for simone?

the interactions all these gymnasts have are fascinating to me!

    • Case Says:

It was interesting, considering Kyla and Simone (and their coaches) were very cordial to each other in both AA and EF.

    • uglyfatkid Says:

I caught it as well, but it seemed like it was mostly Maroney from the footage I saw. Either it is just game face, or she was pissed that Simone was putting the pressure on her. She was the vault queen for 2 years (even with her fall), and now this new girl is there hitting her vaults like its nothing. In fact, I don’t remember her even smiling until half way through the national anthem during the metal ceremony. I like Maroney, but she was frosty in that arena for sure.

Also off topic, but did anyone else catch a glimpse of Aly in the crowd during floor finals? ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Tortuga Says:

I feel like Maroney is always game face during competition. I also feel when her hair is pulled back tight she looks more bitchy lol. SImone is on her heels, although I feel Maroney is still higher and cleaner. Also more capable of the TTY. The only time I remember seeing Mckayla happy in competition was Team Finals in London after her vault. Probably because it was nearly perfect and she had done all she could. Her competition was done.

      • Gymbee Says:

For Maroney I think that is her game face. I can’t imagine she would be pissed, she knows what the other girls are training.

Her coach has said in the gym and at competition she is no smiles, no jokes. He said whenever he tells her a joke in the gym she smiles politely and immediately straight face.

      • Dee Says:

I remember McKayla’s coach saying that too, Gymbee. I think a lot of the interactions we see are because she is so game-faced. However, I would have to think that in the back of her mind she knows that the heat is on and it’s coming from someone from her own country. I can’t see her being happy getting dethroned…I guess this would be where the phrase “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” comes in. I would loooove to be a fly on the wall at camp when these two are vaulting in the upcoming months.

      • Catherine Says:

Aly had a crap view on Sunday, down by parallel bars. Al Fong and Armine were near her. I had a better view and my tickets were moved that day from an amazing block, but it was out of bounds grrr.

Aly was soooo loud, amazed she didn’t lose her voice. But then she only did it for US athletes I suppose and was too busy taking photos of Shang Chunsong and laughing at her size, because of course, everybody had the same quality of life and nutrition growing up as Aly.

      • Flippateer Says:

I think it’s part gameface and maybe part that McKayla wasn’t thrilled with her Worlds. She obviously had higher hopes from the AA that played out, and she was disappointed about being benched for floor EF. She may also be feeling the pressure a bit more than she’d like from Simone. But I think they are generally still very friendly with each other.

      • Karlie Says:

Wait, Catherine, you were able to hear Aly make rude comments about Chunsong? After all the crap she gets on the gymternet for her own body type?

      • Karlie Says:

To clarify – I just hoped Aly would show more taste/politeness than that. Ah well.

      • Catherine Says:

No sorry, not clear. I meant Aly cheering for US gymnasts. It turns out if you look at Nastia’s twitter that Aly sent her (and Jordyn, who replies in the comments) a picture of Shang Chunsong, some joke ‘#not17’.

        I should reply #notrichandpriveleged #no4starhotelsforherfamily #becausethey’reextremelyfuckingpoor #nomeatordairyforshanggrowingup #malnourishedatacriticalstageforgrowth
#brother’seducationstoppedtopayforhergymnastics #breadwinnerforherfamilysincetheageof10. But I think that would be over the character limit, sigh.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t know why people don’t believe me when I say Nastia brings out the worst in people. She has been a spoiled princess her entire life. Everyone telling her how wonderful she is and she took that into her adult life. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her bring down some alleged genuine people with her.

      • biyatch Says:

I said it in the other thread and I’ll say it again. I put total blame for the underage Chinese thing on Nastia. Aly sending a private text message about her thoughts (that a lot of people have expressed and that the Chinese have been busted on in the past) is a lot different then Nastia blasting it on her very public twitter account. Jordyn also should have never responded. Nastia turned a private discussion public.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Aly could have told her to take it off but she didn’t.

      • Catherine Says:

Lauren H said ‘Nastia is still butthurt that she was beaten on bars by a foetus’ hahaha.

The Chinese have been busted on it in the past, yes. So have Romania, and under Marta too. So have the Soviets, and North Korea. I feel like practically every gymnast China produce get accused of it, as if they’d ever be that unlucky with birth years.

In the case of Shang, she looked the same years ago. She is from an exceptionally poor family and her diet growing up would have been so much less nutritious than the privileged Americans. Yes, she is tiny, and so slight. Her head in relation to her body screams prior malnutrition. I have no problem believing her age. And Marta should watch Huang Huidan in 2009, where she looked the exact same.

      • Gymbee Says:

How do we know it was a photo of Shang Chunsong? Did Nastia say?

      • Catherine Says:

There’s nobody else it could be.

      • Gymbee Says:

Couldn’t it be Huang Huidan? She is 17 too.

      • Catherine Says:

Huang looks her age, and looked the exact same 4 years ago. Marta is just a test. Shang is the only one who doesn’t look her age.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Isn’t Shang taken care of by the communist regime – meaning, she was taken away from her family at a young age (I’m guessing) to do gymnastics, and basically she’s the property of her country. So don’t they feed her? Meaning her parents are off the hook on that one? I figured she was part of the Chinese national training system, and they’d be sure to have their athletes fed well.

Lord knows their divers don’t look nearly as young/fragile yet they are part of the same national system.

Face it too the Chinese are known to cheat and I’m sure they did so exclusively when they were hosting the Olympics. They’ve been caught before sure but that doesn’t mean they don’t continue doing it. I wouldn’t guess they’d be doing it one year after the Olympics though, so I buy Shang’s age here. I didn’t buy He Kexing’s age but hey, she beat Nastia so she can be 16 for all I care.

      • Catherine Says:

No. She joined the National Team at the age of 10, at which point she received a stipend – essentially bankrolling her family. Her family is exceptionally poor and rural, and where she is from- meat would be very rare. China does not take them all info a central training location, only the National Team and even then those girls spend a lot of time training in their provincial training groups.

Shang’s head gives it away. In relation to the rest of her, it screams malnutrition. It’s common for Asians to look younger than they are, we know that. In this case, Shang is at the extra disadvantage of crappy nutrition growing up, which is also quite common in poor, rural areas. Her brother was taken out of school entirely to fund Shang’s gymnastics. Her background, in comparison to Yao Jinnan whose parents are comfortable, is why the money she got from her national games wins ($500k) is so significant. She is set for life, and so are her family. She is buying them a house, and her brother, whose blindness she wants to help treat with the money. Not to mention a good college place is secured for her too.

    • Catherine Says:

That wasn’t the case. They were talking and laughing when marching out after the comp, and coming back for the medal ceremony.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Thank for all the insider info Cat. We only see what the cameras showed. I love that you were there. Any other tidbits?

      • Catherine Says:

Any specific gymnast in mind? I just watched vault finals and I’m delighted they didn’t replay Chantysha’s acl tear a billion times like the screen in the arena did. It was right in front of me, so awful, but she never made a sound. The mental strength that takes!

      • uglyfatkid Says:

I felt so bad for her! I never want anyone to get hurt, even if I dislike them.

How was the Mo in person? I would have die to see her do it live!

What was the most exciting moment for you? And the least unexpected?

      • Catherine Says:

Oh it was awesome. Huge intake of breath and total silence both days she went for it and then an explosion when she caught it..both times, she caught it in EF too, however briefly.

The Def looks more impressive than I thought it would. Most unexpected…hmm. Mustafina not only staying on beam in finals, but not wobbling and nailing the crap out of it.

Most exciting WAG moment, probably Moors going for her skill. The tension! MAG were more dramatic…Kenzo Shirai’s floor, Epke high bar (the roar for him was epic) and Yang Hak Seon vault, oh and Kohei anything.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

I would have died to be there! Thank you so much for the info!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Tortuga Says:

Flash back to 2008 AA Final (This discussion will never be over) If we’re going to get technical here by what the code of points declares artistry.

    Original Movement

    Movements fitting to music

Expressing theme or idea through music and movement etc.

I believe Shawn has better artistry than Nastia on floor HANDS DOWN! She moves fluidly through the routine that fits to the music while expressing a general idea through her facial expressions (smiling). Not to mention other than artistry she has great form and powerful tumbling. The only areas of complaint is her lack of flexibility in leaps and jumps.

    • Akshay Says:

That is one final I refuse to watch again. I watched it for the first time in five years during like July, and it was painful haha.

  12. biyatch Says:

I think part of the problem as well is that, at least to an extent, there’s a different between discriminating between things that a gymnast can and can’t control. For example we can lambaste Aly for not pointing her feet, but we shouldn’t criticize her for having flat feet/lack of arch which she can’t control. Obviously “dancer feet” look better but thats not controllable.

Simone would look ridiculous trying to dance to a swan lake type floor exercise like Komova had just as Komova would have a hard time pulling off Jordyn or Simone’s routines.

People with builds like Aly and Simone could starve themselves and still not have near the body type that someone like Komova has. Long lines and pixie bodies doesn’t equate to artistry.

    • Dee Says:

Truthfully, I was so pleased last quad when gymnasts started looking muscular and athletic rather than the tiny pixie. I used to gravitate more towards the dancer/pixie like Komova, but last quad she didn’t do it for me. I realized I was more drawn to the styles of Jordyn or Mustafina. I found Afan to be stunning. They look like healthy, strong gymnasts…and they each had unique styles that in their own right were ‘artistic’. (Jordyn’s floor routine was expressive and well choreographed for that music, which suited her.) The notion that body type = artistry is pretty much on its way out, in my opinion. For example, look at Kyla. She is tall and thin with beautiful lines, but she has even admitted that since London they hired a choreographer to TEACH her how to be artistic. Expecting someone to be “artsy” or not based on their body type is silly to me. Sure, Simone doesn’t look like a ballerina, but her floor routine is well choreographed to suit her and she sells it. How is that not considered being ‘artistic’?

Biyatch, I like what you said about the dancer’s feet and what a gymnast can and cannot control. It made me think of how sometimes gymnasts are expected to look like dancers when…that is not what a gymnast is. Sure, gymnasts have dance training (at least most of them at the elite level, I would think) but they are not DANCERS. They are GYMNASTS. We wouldn’t expect a dancer to do a double double on stage, so why do people expect all gymnasts to be excellent dancers?

haha, sorry for all my ranting. This post is making me think!

      • exgymgurl Says:

Not every gymnast has dance training like Lilya….. but it added a beautiful element to her floor routine that made it very unique….

  13. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Maggie Nichols just mentioned that Elizabeth Price is going to the Mexican Open. Did we know that already? Isn’t Ksenia Afanasyeva going to that competition too? That would be an interesting showdown…..

  14. biyatch Says:

So apparently Gabby is on a cruise… her publicist should really be fired. If they are trying to use the pretext of being back in training, she really needs to learn how to better corroborate her story. LOL.

    • CMR Says:

      LOL’d loudly at my desk.

    • CMR Says:

There’s a small training gym below deck.

      • Dee2 Says:

There is an old tv show called The Love Boat that had an episode about that!

        From TV Guide

Episode Detail: The Brotherhood of the Sea; Letter to Babycakes; Daddy’s Pride – The Love Boat
A ladies’ man’s ladies (Telma Hopkins, Sydney Goldsmith) fall for his milquetoast valet; an Olympic medalist (Alex Cord) demands all work and no play from his gymnast daughter (Nancy McKeon). Kevin: Stephen Manley. Rory: Christopher Connelly.

        I remember that episode.lol

OMG I remember that too… I think that was a great episode LOL!!!

    • Tortuga Says:

I guess they didn’t learn after Shawn’s “fakey” come back how to fake being in the gym.

      • exgymgurl Says:

McKayla made a comment about not so serious comebacks like some people have in one of her interviews…

      • Tortuga Says:

Yeah I was quoting her with the word fakey in parenthesis lol. I was wondering if McKayla was referring to Shawn or anyone in particular.

      • Akshay Says:

I think it was more in reference to Nastia. Her comeback was more of a trainwreck than Shawn’s, since Shawn actually did show up the year before the Olympics and get back in shape. Plus Shawn went to Pan Ams and really should have been on the World’s Team instead of Vega.

Not to mention I’ve always gotten a sense (I could be wrong), that Nastia and McKayla would not get along so well. Aly, Nastia, and Jordyn seem to, but I always felt like Nastia would not appreciate the attention McKayla gets, and you know how she behaves with competition.

      • Tortuga Says:

Hahaha!Shawn definitely made a better attempt than Nastia. There’s not enough room for two stars on the American team. Nastia only thinks she’s a star and is jealous of the attention McKayla gets. Not that McKayla is a huge celebrity but she’s definitely a bigger name than Nastia. McKayla also comes across as the type that wouldn’t put up with Nastia’s crap.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mckayla likes Nastia. The Fierce five is deaf, blind and stupid to everything.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Shawn’s was not fake in the beginning. If any of the comebacks were fake it was totally Nastia’s.

      • exgymgurl Says:

McKayla also now is referring to Sandra Izbasa as a good friend. Next it will be Aliya Mustafina….

      • Akshay Says:

LOL I think Maroney is blacklisted in Round Lake after how she behaved with Paseka after Vault Final or whatever. I think there was some interview where Aliya said she didn’t like how McKayla treated Paseka.

    • Case Says:

Maybe she’ll do an Amanar off the fifth deck.

    • Dee Says:

Maybe it’s one of those Richard Simmons cruises where you dance all week and he is choreographing her new floor routine. That would still be considered training, right?

    • exgymgurl Says:

Gabbys cruise was not even paid for. Royal Caribbean didnt even know they were on board and tweeted her saying they were pleased she was on board. Dumb

  15. Katie Says:

I love Agnes Suto. Her tumblr is hilarious.

    • nero Says:

She’s great. Except she did reblog that post about some tit defending Carlotta….hmmm I’ll let that slide for now.

Here’s a tumblr user who was a volunteer at worlds. I highly recommend exploring, she’s answering a lot of questions.

Apparently Kyla and Mckayla are total sweethearts and Aliya is actually a regal diva bitch in person haha.

      • nero Says:

And here’s her take on the banquet. Sam’s a party animal, Aly flirted with Phillip Boy (uhhhh HELLO who wouldn’t??) and Mckayla and Aliya are even more stunning in person

Go look around at her other posts she’s got pics with lots of gymnasts.

      • Katie Says:

Omg when she said that Aliya was the biggest bitch on the planet and she loved it, I totally know how she felt. When Aliya was announced first on beam and everyone in line clapped for her and every other gymnast clapped for everyone down the line and she didn’t clap until Anna in the 8th position was pretty funny.

      • mim Says:

when i studied cross-cultural communication, my lecturer said a lot of people find Russians unfriendly compared to westerners because we are so ready to smile at anyone/strangers, whereas for russians (yes Russians were singled out for this), smiles and familiarity are reserved for family and friends, people they know well.. so they come across unfriendly when really it’s just normal for them.

I have no doubt Aliya comes across as less friendly but I think that’s probably a cultural difference. it’s nice to hear Kyla and mckayla are well regarded. there’s no doubt Simone would be considered a friendly thing either!

      • Flippateer Says:

Hey, you know that’s actually a really cool idea to volunteer at Worlds, esp. if all expenses but transit to host city are provided. Anyone here done it?

      • nero Says:

Oh I don’t think Aliya is a bitch in the sense that she’s mean to people, I think she seems like a nice person. More in the cultural thing that’s mentioned but also that she isn’t exactly thrilled to take a million pictures with people while she’s trying to be 100% focused on her competition. Kind of stand offish I guess? She just seems like a quiet person, introverted maybe

There was some interview she did after the Olympics where she’s like “Yes I am an Olympic Champion in gymnastics but in the real world I’m a nobody” haha I was like ‘damn’

I would TOTALLY volunteer at a Worlds or Olympics if it ever came to my neck of the woods…..but that doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

If she was being bothered in the training gym before a competition I don’t blame her for being annoyed. Let the girl get ready but I don’t for a second believe it is a cultural difference. I know a lot of Russians and they don’t smile and look happy but if you talk to them they aren’t rude.

      • Gymbee Says:

I think it depends on the organizers whether they pay for accommodation or not. I have volunteered at 2 Olympic Games (winter and summer) and I got food and transportation in the city paid.

It’s an amazing experience, I recommend doing it!

      • Gymbee Says:

        Thanks for sharing!

Banquets are so surreal and funny!!

I was at a World Cup banquet in Germany years ago.
Actually first during the competition I ran into Ponor, Rosu and Mariuz Urzica. I asked them for a photo, but Ponor and Rosu were total bitches (this was after the competition btw). Urzica said something to them in Romanian, and they rolled their eyes at him, and he took a photo with me while they sulked ๐Ÿ™‚

During the banquet they were in a better mood and they took photos with people in a group ๐Ÿ™‚

Jade Barbosa was a sweetheart, Jana Sikulova too. Daiane dos santos didn’t want any photos with anyone, Yuri van Gelder and the Italian men were super nice, Imogen Cairns misunderstood and thought we wanted her to take a photo of us hahaha. Polina Miller was shy and sweet, the Chinese girls sniffed all the food (even a carrot).

      • gymtruthteller Says:

How the hell are you people discussing gymnastics at a time like this? There’s a baseball going on. I think I am going to throw up. Carry on:)

      • Gymbee Says:

I have an excuse GTT – I’m European! No baseball here ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      • Lithi Says:

This is actually a reply to Mim’s comment about Russians.

This is correct, Russians don’t smile unless there is a reason and for most, posing for a photograph is actually not one of them. If you are walking the streets in Russia and someone smiles at you, there is either something askew with your appearance or that person is a prostitute.

On banquets, I would love to find someone who attended one when the Eastern Bloc was still around–the interactions between the Soviets and damn near everybody else,,,hmm.

    • Dee Says:

So I don’t know how to link an actual tumblr post b/c I’m new to that mess of a website but on pg 4 of the part-raisman blog is a “translated” Nastia interview everyone would probably laugh at. Figured I’d share it, just scroll down a little and you’ll see it.

  16. GymMom Says:

Not to change the subject but Gabby is on a Royal Carribean cruise…..dressing up in a chef’s outfit.

    Ha ha ha ha…..sorry GTT!

  17. Tortuga Says:

Well, Carlotta is apologizing for her comments about the Americans…

I want to apologize with the Americans girls. I didn't want to sound rude or racist. I love Simone and I'm a huge fan of USA gymnastics.— Carlotta Ferlito (@CarlottaFerlito) October 8, 2013

  18. Tortuga Says:

She goes more in depth here…

I've made a mistake, I'm not perfect, I was too nervous and I didn't think about what I was saying. I'm just a human. I'm so so sorry.— Carlotta Ferlito (@CarlottaFerlito) October 8, 2013

    • nero Says:

I can forgive her comments after beam, she was upset and the Italians do have shitty luck when it comes to being pushed down into 4th and 5th place. She was frustrated, ok I get it.

But her comments after AA were inexcusable in my eyes. They knew they probably wouldn’t make it onto the podium so there was no frustration there. She made a horrible inappropriate joke and this just reeks of “Oh shit we’re getting bad press time for damage control”

And what about the way Vanessa refused to hug Aliya after beam? They’re personalities seem ugh to me

      • Tortuga Says:

Yup, that’s what I thought. Oh crap shit is hitting the fan! Better apologize and save my tv show. The beam comments were valid had she not said anything after AA.

      • Gymbee Says:

Agree nero! Sadly, these type of comments seem to happen more frequently in Italy. Re the article I posted in the other thread. Famous Italian soccer player Mario Balotelli who is black seem to get more negative comments about his colour than anything else. I lived in Italy and my husband is from there too. Some people need a major attitude change.

    • Flippateer Says:

Um, right. Being “a human” does not mean that racist idiocy automatically comes out of your mouth when you are nervous. If it does, then that makes you a racist human…and you really should work on that.

      • mim Says:

too little too late for me. shit hit the fan and she was told to apologise.

as a teenager, she should know how quickly things can spread on social media and her comments are going to be scrutinised. hope she takes something away from this.

      • Karlie Says:

Saying something like that isn’t a “mistake.” There was very, very little chance of her or Ferrari medalling in the AA. Why even make the black face comment at all, unless she was specifically annoyed that a black gymnast was first? Makes no sense.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

So well put Flippateer! Great comments!

      • Gymbee Says:

        Word! Well said.

      • Flippateer Says:

I also think it’s worth mentioning that immediately after tweeting her self-serving, inadequate apology, she retweeted comments from a couple of her fans praising her for being big enough to apologize, further diminishing her in my opinion: https://twitter.com/carlottaferlito

And to me it warrants mentioning that she singled Simone out for “not deserving” to win a medal in beam EF after making racist remarks a couple of days earlier. Two Americans challenged their D scores and had them increased – but she only singled out the black gymnast to criticize. Moreover, I’m not sure when the last time was that I saw a gymnast (Khorkina?) make such rude and unsportsmanlike comments about what a competitor deserved. If it was Ferlito’s place to decide which gymnast deserved which medal, her title would be “judge.” It sounds like she needs human decency training, sportsmanship training, AND media training. What a disappointing gymnast (and human being.)

      • Flippateer Says:

Here are her comments about Simone not deserving to win a beam medal, for those who have not yet seen them: http://www.gymnastike.org/coverage/251079-2013-World-Championships/video/721761-Carlotta-Ferlito-Upset-With-Beam-Final

      • Case Says:

Flipateer, I’d add that she could also use more gymnastics training.

      • Gymbee Says:

Flippateer. gppd point. I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say someone didn’t deserve a medal either. That is piss poor behaviour.

      • Gymbee Says:

Anyway, I finally saw the interview with her.
She also seems pissed about Mustafina, who fell and fell and fell in training, but nailed it in competition “as usual!”
It says she said, after the mic was switched off “next time I will colour my face black, then I will be sure to win”

I am still just so shocked about it! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Anyway, enough attention to her.

    • Dee Says:

Even buzzfeed, a totally non gymnastics educated site, is talking about Carlotta’s mouth. She can apologize all she wants, but this is what she will be known for from now on.

      • Gymbee Says:

And apparently today her book comes out (autobiography). Hoping she didn’t “apologize” to boost sales.

      • Case Says:

She’s got a book coming out??? And a TV show? What the hell makes her such a celebrity over there? Does Ferrari get all that media attention too?

      • Gymbee Says:

The TV show is an MTV reality show, with Carlotta, Elisabetta Preziosa, Elisa Meneghini, Emily Arni etc, just about their training and selections etc etc. Ferrari isn’t on that TV show.

She is also some Garnier TV ad face. She was a host or something for Nickelodeons kids choice awards as well (in Italy). She’s like a B-celebrity type thing, nothing major.

And today her book came out. “Cosa penso mentre volo” – (what I think while I’m flying). Didnt know about it, just checked her twitter and saw that she re-tweeted people who were excited about her book (among the retweets of ppl praising her for apologising.)

      • Dee Says:

ummm…that totally nullifies her apology for me. If she has a book coming out today, then I think that’s why she tweeted that she was sorry.

      • Gymbee Says:

I hope that is not why she went out so strongly in media in the first place.

Like Komova when Jordyn won in 2011, she cried once and then she said she was going to come back stronger (I don’t know whether she said something else to russian media).

Jordyn not advancing to AA last year, she cried once, then said she was looking forward to TF’s.

Now this girl (who in theory didnt stand a chance to medal) has a book coming out and she attacks left, right and centre. In the interview she said they won because they are americans, and Simone got bronze because she had just won AA. She was pissed because Musty competed perfectly after falling in training. She had to know media would bite on that. I hope she is not that cynical, but you never know when there’s a publicist involved…. and the italy gymnastics facebook page (that put up the interview after AA) has tons of supportive comments from people (who are the target group for this book I guess) with the sentiment like “gooo Carlotta! get the americans! say what you think!”

      • sanitynmotion Says:

And then the Italian Federation releases this BULLSHIT statement:

“Carlotta was talking about what she thinks is the current gymnastics trend: the CoP is opening chances for coloured people (known to be more powerful) and penalizing the typical Eastern Europen elegance, which, when gymnastics was more artistic and less acrobatic, allowed Russia and Romania to dominate the field.

The same comparison could be made between Biles and Ross, both from the US, a multi-racial country that is able to adapt to the constant changes in CoP.

Why are there no black swimmers? Because their physical features donโ€™t suit the sport.

Is gymnastics suiting coloured features more and more, to the point athlets wish they were black?

Please, donโ€™t trash the topic, so no one will be banned. We are curious to know your opinion on the matter.โ€

Really…there are no black swimmers? Are these people for real?

      • Gymbee Says:

Oh my god! That is NOT what she said though, “colouring” her face black won’t change her body type. I can’t believe it!

      • Gymbee Says:

Sorry hit enter before I finished. Carlotta could have said “the code of points favours powerful gymnasts” (still Mustafina won beam and Huidang bars) not “the code of points favours African Americans”.

      • Karlie Says:

Holy shit, seriously? Unbelievable. And that is incredibly classless of the Italian Federation – just wow. Ferrari is a power gymnast. Jordyn is a power gymnast – so is Aly, so was Shawn, and so were countless other gymnasts who have been successful in the past few years. NABieva is a power gymnast. There is literally no evidence to indicate that the COP favors African Americans and it’sr acist in itself to say that black people have a certain “body type” so they get preferential treatment. I haven’t seen the Italian Federation complaining about this power vs. elegance problem when countless other white power gymnasts won – only black gymnasts.

Ferlito was saying that the judges favored Simone (and Gabby last year) because she is black, because it clearly bothers Ferlito that black gymnasts are doing well. In no way was she commenting on changing her body type to suit the code. It was racism, pure and simple.

      • sportsfan Says:

That was one of the most racist and disturbing things I have ever read. For the Italian Federation to think that statement would clean up a PR mess in 2013 shows how out of touch the country is not only in international competition, but in today’s world. Heads need to be served on a silver platter after things like that are said

Carlotta is lucky she said that overseas, and not at a competition here in the US. She would be crucified in our news cycle.

  19. Case Says:

No one cares, Carlotta. Take your shitty, second rate gymnastics back to Italy. When you beat the Americans I’ll give you the time of day.

    • Case Says:

Okay so that was a little harsh but I was watching an intense game at the time, lol.

    • Case Says:

The Sox/Rays game is intense too! Here I thought I’d get some things done since our game ended early but I’m still glued to the screen. Good baseball tonight.

PS. Just like you told me, there’s still hope. Especially since you ran Tampa’s starter off in the 2nd inning.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Moors pretty much own the Red Sox hitters. David Price doesn’t scare me but Moors does even how he pitched during game 2. The Red Sox are making stupid mistakes in this game and if Salty leaves one more man in scoring position I am going to Fenway tomorrow and sladsing his tires.lol

      • Case Says:

No need to do all that now, congrats on the big win!! I’m super nervous for Thursday’s game! Tigers need to get it done.

  20. Lyra Gill (@lygill) Says:

Well damn. Ugh this is horrible.

    • Lyra Gill (@lygill) Says:

screenshot of what the italian gymnastics federation posted –

    • biyatch Says:

Another good response, laying it all out:

      • biyatch Says:

And a Chicago Tribune article with Steve Penny comments and the justification by the guy who wrote the stuff on the IGF facebook page: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/chi-italian-gymnast-federation-spokesman-apologize-for-racial-insensitivity-20131009,0,5112018.story

      • byrdisthewyrd Says:

This is terribly, terribly ugly. Poor Simone. She should be on top of the world right now and feeling great and instead she’s going to see this racist bullshit everywhere. It’s sickening. What clarification could Steve Penny be looking for from the Italian Federation? I mean, they were pretty clear about how they felt. Hmm, I wonder if anything happens from here. Could there be sanctions for this sort of thing by the FIG or do they just hope it goes away?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Simone will be asked about it but she seems like a typical kid in the respect she doesn;’t read the paper and was oblivious to what was happening.

I can tell you her coach is pissed and is whining all over facebook. According to someone who told me what was said.

      • Case Says:

Her coach should be pissed. Her athlete just achieved greatness and some assholes are trying to minimize her talent and make it racial. Unreal.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She agree’s it is racial and was going off on the Italians. She also thinks Simone EARNED the beam medal.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’ll have to watch beam finals to form an opinion, but the Italians’ reaction was so unclassy I can’t help but be biased now against them.

      • gymnastwannabe Says:

I can hardly believe the stereotyping crap the Italian Federation wrote. Their response is even more racist and displays a level of ignorance about genetics and body types that is very astonishing to me coming from people I thought were educated. To suggest that African Americans have more power and Europeans more grace? Aly and Jordyn had more power than Douglas and Shawn is built like Simone. Have they never seen a graceful black dancer? If I was Italian, I’d be embarrassed by the level of ignorance and stereotyping displayed in this response. Hopefully Simone can find some pride and humor in knowing she is more intelligent than the idiots from Italy.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

According to the article by the tribune that Biyatch posted above, the comments by that guy were not the official thoughts of the Italian Federation. Granted, the guy is a “spokesperson” for the Federation…but I doubt every one at the Italian Federation feels the same way.

Granted…the guy is a complete racist moron, and shouldn’t have posted anything…but I implicating all the whole Italian Federation is a bit wrong.

I only say that because Steve Penny, Marta, Bela, etc. have said a lot of shit people don’t agree with, and I would hate people to assume everyone at USA Gymnastics supports their views/ comments.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Sorry, my phone freaked out and I accidentally posted before I was finished.

Anyway, my comment isn’t pointed at you Gymnastwannabe…just a general comment. I just don’t want people to assume it’s all of the Italian Federation, because that would be just as wrong of an assumption as his “black people aren’t good swimmers” crap.

I also want to say again for the record…that this guy is a douche and a half. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • sanitynmotion Says:

..and the douche obviously doesn’t know who Cullen Jones is. Not only is he a black Olympic swimmer, HE IS A GOLD MEDALIST in swimming. What a freakin retard. Italy, wake the eff up.

      • uglyfatkid Says:

Amen!!! By the way, it’s Great to have you back Sanity! Where have you been?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I was in New York – for a wedding. Definitely could not get away with hiding out to watch Worlds, unfortunately. ๐Ÿ™‚ It took me a while yesterday to catch up with what’s been going down on this blog!

I’ve only watched the vault finals so far.

      • mimi Says:

FIG should disqualify them from competing as far as i concerned. racism should NOT be condoned or tolerated.

can they, or have they ever, done that?

      • Gymbee Says:

Yeah I saw that the guy said it was his own personal views. Then he should have posted it on his own private Facebook page, or added a disclaimer like “this is the views of me, not the one of my employer”. You’d think a sports spokesperson would know that.

The disturbing thing is to see how much support they’re getting! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      • uglyfatkid Says:

        Couldn’t agree more Gymbee!

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

is the italian federation guy trying to say that ferrari is graceful? i love vanessa but yeah no you’re not, sorry. plus um KYLA ROSS won 3 medals at worlds with some of the lower difficulty for the big players and is very graceful. if she would have stuck her dismount she would have won beam.

        this is just disgusting racism.

      • sportsfan Says:

There is ground for punishment of the Italians by the FIG, cause there is a code of ethics. I don’t know if a country has been punished ever for something like this, but I think it damn sure qualifies.

  21. gymnastwannabe Says:

It is also such a knock on Simone to suggest she won b/c she is black, not b/c she’s the best…urrr. Seriously? Seriously? Why in the world can’t people just see people as people. I’m sure Simone would like to be able to walk into an arena, like every other white person gets to, and be viewed as “Simone”…not “The Black Gymnast.” Good Lord, what year is this! As for the beam final…instead of thinking the US got favoritism maybe we should be asking if the judges weren’t actually against the US…why were our D scores wrong and the other countries right? If the other countries were wrong, too, they need to stand up for their gymnasts or shut up. …ok, I’m done raging…just still in shock by what the Italian Fed said in the yr 2013…

  22. sanitynmotion Says:

Just watched vault finals. I think the Swiss girl got jobbed. How did Hong score in the 9’s on execution for that second vault? That’s a travesty.

Had the Swiss girl been that good in 2010 she would have been vault gold medalist (her rudi was better than ASac’s I thought).

And Chuso’s springboard seemed to be positioned waaaay too far away from the vault table. She was hitting the table at the very front, where it slants, whereas everyone else for the most part was hitting the table in the middle. I was actually freaked by seeing the way her springboard was set up as she was running to it. I’m surprised she was able to get that second vault around.

Finally, if Maroney doesn’t upgrade or something I can really see Biles giving her a run for her money next year at vault finals. It was only because she had more D that she won this time around. Biles’ form is really great in the air, especially on that second vault. It should be a race to determine who gets named for that TTY.

Maroney was really good though for having been back at it for 8 months, I still have to think about that. I still say there’s no amanar like hers, if only for the height she gets off that table.

And that Vietnamese girl (forgot her name) should NOT have gone for that amanar. She was so lucky she didn’t come away with a torn ACL.

    • Dee Says:

I’ve seen Chuso’s board positioned that way before, too, and I’m guessing she just likes it that way. Totally makes me panic, too haha.

I feel as though the race for the TTY is officially on!!!

    • Gymbee Says:

There’s two things I love about Maroney’s vault. One is the height and the second her amazing form. Her feet are glued side by side. Simone has good form too, but what bothers me is her crossed feet in the air.

Totally agree about Steingruber. Much cleaner than Hong un Jong or whatever her name is.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree about Maroney’s form, but actually Simone’s feet were not crossed at all on her second vault. Maroney’s second vault was a bit more sloppy as she came down – bent knees and more piked at the waist. I’m going to give her a pass though this time around because after all it’s only been 8 months since her comeback. I know it’ll be better next year.

    • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

I think we’ll definitely see the triple from McKayla next year. She did an interview at Worlds with gymnastike I think? where she talked about how she hadn’t been in the gym long enough to do the triple safely. She also mentioned they want to upgrade to a Cheng as well. But the fact that she can do the triple but she sometimes lands it too low is just amazing after only having serious training for 8 months. If she has that with her form she could easily get a 16.4-16.5 if they keep the score a 16.8 which is just insane.

I don’ t think Simone necessarily needs the triple right now. She could upgrade her 2nd vault to a Cheng or Mustafina. I think she may take longer because she’s concentrating on doing the AA for now. Next year she should be able to still be in the mix for that. I don’t see Amelia Hundley or Nica Hults challenging with an AA spot and I think they’re the only juniors turning seniors that year. But in 2015 I could see it from her. It’s gonna be a lot harder for her and Kyla to do AA once we get to that year.

    • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

Oh and Steingruber was COMPLETELY robbed of a bronze. Hong’s scores were a bunch of bullcrap.

    • biyatch Says:

I agree that Simone is super close to passing Maroney and if she doesn’t upgrade she could become irrelevant real fast with others throwing 2 good vaults, and being able to contribute on weaker events as well. I think both of them should be working on the Cheng before they try to go for the TTY. Simone’s Cheng looked pretty good on video. Or Maroney could go for a yurchenko double back that there were talks of a few years ago. The TTY was only valued at 6.8 and I’m not sure they would be able to be clean enough to make it worth the risk.

  23. mimi Says:

does FIG have policies on sanctioning countries from competing? thought i’d doubt they would have the balls or any convictions to do so. italian fed gymnastics should be penalised. they should have left it at carlotta’s BS apology instead of sticking their douchy foot in it and making it worse.

i love italy as a country, i know lots of lovely italians who are not racist pricks, but the italian federation of gymnastics can suck it. this is sending a very blatant and clear message. what if this were to affect some girls so much they wouldn’t feel comfortable competing?

im just truly, truly floored and disgusted.

  24. Gymbee Says:

Hahaha and now it reached Norwegian news too. Good job Carlotta.

  25. Case Says:

Cue Natalie Hawkins on Oprah soon trying to make a buck off all this.

    • Gymbee Says:

      Good lord, can you imagine!

    • Tortuga Says:

Hahaha! I’m just waiting on Oprah to jump on this and have Simone and Gabby back on the show for a special. But Simone really can pull the race card now. Something actually happened to her. But it was not any of her team mates making her feel “different” for being African American, it was Carlotta and this spokesperson douche.

  26. Case Says:

Now it’s a front page headline on ESPN.com. Wow.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

So sad that Biles winning doesn’t make front page news – it’s a non-winning Italian’s comment about Biles (winning a bronze) that makes front page news. Shows what the media’s priorities are. Stir up the drama.

      • nero Says:

Ugh EXACTLY. The priority of the media is to whore out controversial stories instead of reporting the news.

A lot of other sports get a banner or headline after an American wins. I think Missy Franklin was making headlines about her world championships even before she became a big name at the Olympics.

Why not announce to America that we continue to have the best AA gymnasts in the world? That we went 1-2 in the AA, that Kyla beat the reigning Olympic champ on bars and Simone won floor??

I’m even more baffled that there were no ‘Mckayla is finally impressed’ in the main stream media. Is it because it hasn’t aired on American TV yet? NBC is showing it this weekend so maybe yahoo and others would have picked up those stories then?

But now all of that is overshadowed because Carlotta and the IGF had to be insensitive assholes.

Simone is no longer the World AA Champion in the media’s and general public’s eyes, she’s ‘that gymnast who had racist remarks made about her’

      • Tortuga Says:

Unfortunately America doesn’t care about gymnastics. It was a big deal after 96 but faded away by 2000. I thought the year after a hugely successful Olympics (2012) would help the media want to air more competitions and have more coverage but I guess I was wrong. It will be interesting to see what happens when this is aired on tv. USAG Facebook has posted anything about this so it probably wont come up. I hate that Simone will be remembered for Ferlito’s stupidity now. It’s a shame.

      • nero Says:

I wouldn’t say that, Gymnastics is consistently a top 3 sport at the Olympics.

I think the problem last year was the handling of the broadcast of gymnastics. Look at Olympic Trials, it was a huge success for NBC and after the team was named the girls generated A TON of interest. Multiple interviews before they even won, the cover of Sport’s Illustrated etc. That’s what happens when the coverage is done right. It was because the people got to live through the routines uninterrupted, everyone was on the edge of their seat throughout the whole competition and then they got to see in person the girls who made the team.

Going through a whole night watching 15 girls compete, then seeing the 5 that made the Olympic team and the emotions they showed CONNECTED the girls to the audience.

Fast forward a month later and people read on twitter or yahoo or see on the news that the girls won, they did it. So when people watched it in prime time and saw the girls succeed there was no emotional impact. I’m sure for a lot of people it felt a little hollow because they saw the news 10 hours ago.

      • Tortuga Says:

That is definitely what I hated about the Olympics is all the spoilers. I have to stay away from all media till it actually airs on television, which is basically impossible now days. Gymnastics is a big deal around the Olympics but after it’s over you don’t see much more gymnastics. I was surprised there was no “Where Are They Now” tv documentary a year after the Olympics or things like that. Maybe it’s just I see things differently now and comparing them to child hood.

      • nero Says:

I also think the problem last year was that the Olympics were ‘only’ in London. With Beijing it was a lot bigger, it was mysterious, it was a somewhat closed off country inviting the world to come visit. It was China vs the USA not just in gymnastics but in every single event.

The venues were meticulously built and were architecturally amazing. Everything had to be ‘perfect’

With London it was kind of ‘just another Olympics’ Now I love what London did with their venues and everything but I think Beijing had a ton more hype around it, not just in gymnastics, but in the whole thing.

    • Akshay Says:

I just think the Fierce Five aren’t nearly as popular as people think, and as a result, gymnastics hasn’t stayed interesting for nearly as long. I think four year fans would have trouble naming at least two members of the Fierce Five. Gymnastics seemed to remain popular for longer than usual after Beijing if I remember correctly, since Shawn and Nastia (but mostly Shawn) were just that popular in the media.

    • sportsfan Says:

It makes me wonder if the coverage would be different had ESPN/ABC got a hold of the Olympic TV contracts. I know it wouldn’t have taken an effect for a couple of years, but ESPN the would have almost an obligation to shed light on these competitions so they can promote the fact that the Olympics would be on ESPN in 2020 or whatever.

      • exgymgurl Says:

You hit the nail on the head. Olympics are ABC so Espn doesnt give an F about covering olympic sports / athletes. Thats why it doesnt get covered. If ABC / ESPN aired the olympics it would all be different.

  27. terrigymfan Says:

Carlotta’s comments and especially the IGF’s response were assine. I am impressed with the way Simone and her family have handled it.

  28. Flippateer Says:

Okay, maybe the IGF just needs to stop talking about this. Every time they try to “clarify” they make things worse. This time they want us to know about the pristine moral character of Ferlito and how we all “misunderstood” her remarks:

โ€œThe Italian Gymnastics Federation is aware of the Twitter apology its athlete, Carlotta Ferlito, gave about statements she made after the all-around final … statements that, knowing the moral qualities of this Sicilian athlete, can only have been misunderstood…”

They proceed to condemn racism without apologizing to Simone or USAG. By the way, they also need to remember to USAS and black swimmers for the racist remarks about athletes from another sport.

    • Gymbee Says:

Aliya Mustafina on twitter tweeted her support of Carlotta Ferlito. Is that a real account?

      • Gymbee Says:

        Sorry ignore that! Fake.

It bothers me to see that while this is going on, she is retweeting hundreds of fans declaring their love for her and her book. Ugh.

I’m wondering if this will sour relations with the Jesolo trophy now?

      • Gymbee Says:

Aly wisely deleted the photo she took with her off Instagram. Smart choice not to get drawn into the drama. Wonder if her agent told her?

      • Flippateer Says:

Good going for Aly. I’m sure her agent keeps an eye out for stuff like that, as they should.

One thing I wanted to mention is that while I’d be very worked up about racist comments towards any gymnast, I am especially worked up on Simone’s behalf because she comes off as SO nice and genuine and humble and supportive of *everyone.* Remember her reaction to winning nat’ls? In a far cry from our “I made history and inspired a generation” friend, Simone stated after P&G, “โ€œI was excited, but I was happy for everyone else. I thought even if I did come in second, third โ€” everybody looked good, so I was happy.โ€ Simone’s modesty and sportsmanship make her exactly the sort of person I want representing my country on the world stage. She absolutely deserves to have people recognize when she hits and wins on pure merit. When people say it was because of her skin color (!!!!! – who could forget the long tradition of black privilege in America or in gymnastics, of course), it makes me want to explode into a million pieces with anger. JUST, NO.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        I totally agree with you.

On the other hand though – think if this sort of thing had happened to Gabby. OMG, it would be a nightmare just taking into account her mother and her aptitude to make up fake stories anyway to make it seem like she went through a lot of adversity in life. Puh-lease.

Simone at least will shrug this off and move on, as she should. Gabby however would keep pointing fingers at this and making it be a big definition of her career.

All the more reason to root for Simone in the future.

  29. nero Says:

It’s the very first story on yahoo right now, over 2000 comments already.

Sad that this is Simone’s ‘coming out party’ when it should be her amazing achievements.

I don’t know what I’m more angry about; Carlotta saying something so ignorant and disrespectful about a competitor, her federation’s ‘attempt’ at trying to explain what she meant and making it a million times worse, or the fact that this has overshadowed what Simone did in the media’s attempt to merely get page hits.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

The only thing I can hope that all of this hoopla will generate is more interest in women’s gymnastics, in general. Then maybe we will see the competition on TV the week it actually happened.

Kind of like (sadly) what Tanya Harding did for figure skating (for a while), maybe Carlotta will do for gymnastics in the US. I guess now at least many will know who Simone is, and look up what she did and her exceptionalism in this sport.

  30. gymnastwannabe Says:

I’m dreaming…but I wish for a strong consequence for Carlotta and the Italian Fed…like a real apology and Carlotta is suspended for at least one competition outside of Italy…so the message is clearly sent that this crap won’t be tolerated. I think it is a good point that the spokesperson for the Ita. Fed may not represent all the views of the Fed…if this is the case, though, he should be fired or publicly corrected by the Fed. I don’t believe this has happened? Saying he doesn’t necessarily represent all their views and that is it…in my book is just another way of letting him take the heat for what they all really believe. If they feel otherwise, then speak up and correct the shitty statement he made by saying Carlotta was wrong…period.

    • Gymbee Says:

Yeah, a strong consequence would be good, especially with all the media this has generated. I know Carlotta said she was nervous, etc, but I don’t know how those words can come out of someones mouth without her having had that thought and been annoyed by it. Racist remarks like that don’t just happen all of a sudden.

      If that makes sense!

  31. Case Says:

Let’s go GTT!!! Tigers pulled it off and now it’s off to Boston! Gotta tell you though, if we don’t start scoring more runs it may be a short series for Detroit. We can’t expect our starting pitching to be superhuman forever.

  32. Akshay Says:

Thought you guys might enjoy this! It’s about the food situation at camp. Pretty telling, but I not anything we didn’t already know.

    • Dee Says:

hahah yes, I love snooping on his facebook, there is often some interesting stuff there. Totally confirms what we all have been thinking for the past few years about camp food!!!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

omg this is awesome. Love the comment about having toast is = “too many carbs.” Wow, for all these girls workout, you’d think they could have a couple “cheat” meals and nobody would notice! I mean I ate like a trucker when I was swimming competitively and during swim season would STILL lose weight. Don’t know how these girls even look as healthy as they do with their diets to be honest. I guess they eat more protein?

    • exgymgurl Says:

I think it was a 2″ diameter pizza. But at that point, the night before the last finals, does one pizza (especially a small european sized pizza) for four girls really matter? Thats like what 2 slices a piece? We know all the gymnastic coaches from the good countries are food nazis but really does it matter at that point? I bet they were afraid or it was a test. I mean McKayla and Brenna could have eaten the whole thing they were done.

  33. Akshay Says:

Watching the NBC worlds coverage, and Nastia is at it again with that voice.

Also she just said that Aliya had “perfect form” midair on her triple twist. What the eff.

    • Lis Says:

I was eyerolling all through the tongue bathing of Mustafina’s form. NOT ONCE did they mention that her form was sloppy. And then there was that crack about Shang’s age. Tim said something along the lines of “they need to be 16 to compete.” And just left it at that. Poor girl is suffering from early malnutrition which leads to stunted growth, etc.

    • Gymbee Says:

Hehe that’s how Nastia looked on her twists ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Short1 Says:

Yeah, and you’d think since it wasn’t live they could have at least tried to time that better (at the very least)!

  34. exgymgurl Says:

GTT an interview now with your faavorite person after Nastia. Nellie Kim. Who says some interesting things. And apparently is taking large consulting fees from the Brazilian gymnastics federation…..

    • Lithi Says:

Is it me or is she talking out of all sides of her mouth here?

    • nero Says:

Interesting read. I think by ‘smiling’ she means the confidence the American girls have. Gymnastics is a judged sport and no matter how well they’re trained, judges are human. Are they going to give the benefit of the doubt to some girl who has her head and shoulders down who looks terrified or someone who looks unfazed by they whole thing?

I mean, just watching Shang Chunsong compete was cringe worthy for me. ESPECIALLY during floor. She just looked disinterested. And that’s something completely different than someone like Mustafina or Ponor.

I don’t think gymnasts have to smile to sell their routines but they have to have ‘something’ to differentiate what they’re doing during competition to what they do in practice. Because it is somewhat of a performance.

Kyla Ross isn’t particularly smiley but she’s got that quiet poise and confidence radiating through her. Same with someone like Izbasa, or Cheng Fei or Jordyn.

That’s just my personal take on what she was possibly trying to say. Someone like Komova doesn’t have to plaster a smile on her face but she also can’t dip her shoulders down when she makes a mistake

    • mimi Says:

haha i ranted about this in the other post accidentally..

i canโ€™t believe she’s still got her job and is apparently credible. these high level people run gymnastics like they’re in the mafia or a high flying corporate investment bank. and she seems like a hypocrite – lives in the states because it’s beneficial to her and takes advantage of all it has to offer, and while acknowledging the US success she backhandedly talks them down which isn’t classy.

russiaโ€™s going down due to valentina being vindictive and all the politics of the sport with coaching and the girls. they refuse to see the value of sports psychologists which many of their girls need (grishy, demy and vika particularly).

and this lovely gem from the interview โ€“ โ€œFrankly speaking, I feel uneasy when gymnasts with an athletic, not gymnastic body, become world champions. Their performances lack elegance, finesse.โ€ screw you nelly kim. they are first and foremost ATHLETES so yeah, theyโ€™re going to look athletic… it’s not 1980 where everyone looked half malnourished and waif like as if they were from oliver twist.

and on the smiling thing – mckayla doesn’t smile in her routines, that’s BS. some of these girls will have more charisma naturally that translates well as a performance and not every girl will have this.. they came to the sport because it’s sport not because they want to be performers. presentation can be taught, natural charisma can’t be. i think the ‘regal’ thing is more desirable than the ‘smiley’ thing though.. and really that only comes with confidence.

and simone’s coach is american so nellie can go jump.

      • lol Says:

Maybe she should stop having the judges over score the US then. She knows the US winning is good for the bottom line.

      • Gymbee Says:

Yep, I thought about Geddert and Boorman when she said US was successful because of foreign coaches. Both produced a World Champion, one an Olympic champion.

    • Lithi Says:

I just don’t get Nelli at all. As mentioned, she’s contradictory, if not outright hypocritical in some places. I wonder if she’s still torked at being overshadowed by Nadia in Montreal and is making it her personal mission to be THE face of women’s gymnastics by being head of the technical committee and dictating what she wants to see. Nadia took her fame, she’s taking gymnastics.

Okay, that’s enough. I sound like an Infowars poster.

  35. lol Says:

Just talked to GTT through email and she is about to take a cab to Boston to be outside when Joe West finishes this Sox game. We might have to visit her in jail.lol can’t say I blame her Joe West has been unusually bad this game.

  36. exgymgurl Says:

Carlotta is tweeting pictures of herself and her boyfriend and some louis vitton thing.

  37. Flippateer Says:

Well, Simone may not be planning to comment, but I’m glad that McKayla said something:

    • exgymgurl Says:

Yeah McKayla comes out looking like a winner. Simones parents are correct though. Its better she doesnt comment. Her work speaks for itself. Im not the biggest fan of her gymnastics but she brought it, and her coach and her personally both seem very strong and amazing.

      • sportsfan Says:

I equate it to the team captain standing up for one of her players. Mckayla is the most recognizable person from this group, and the general media is going to pay attention when she talks. So, for her to do the talking for Simone, it carries more weight and she comes across as a team leader. Also, it allows Simone to stay focused and ignore the noise.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I can imagine if any of the FF make it to Rio (and at this point I’m pulling for Kyla the most, but McKayla is a close 2nd), they would be the next team Captain for USA.

I don’t see it happening for Aly but then again, I’ve been wrong many times before.

I obviously don’t see Gabby even coming close to making a comeback. If anything she’ll have an “injury” and have to “back out” a la Shawn Johnson.

    • Flippateer Says:

Agree with you on all fronts. As hard as it is, it would be very hard for Simone to say something that wouldn’t look self-aggrandizing (the same “hard work brings success” when said by the person who won the AA gold could just sound different than when McKayla said it) or otherwise problematic.

I also am not a huge fan of much of Simone’s gymnastics (my recent favorites – by gymnastics, not personality – include Mac, Gabby, JYY, Aliya, Ponor, Shawn, Alicia so I’m kind of all over the place) but respect her performance and work ethic. I really want to see Simone give Mac a run for her money on vault next year, if she fixes her feet/legs form issues.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Haha, I’m the same way as you are in terms of who I like gymnastics-wise – same gymnasts, too. I like Simone on vault and even somewhat on bars (I know, weird – but she kind of reminds me of Gabby) but am not a fan of her on beam or floor. She reminds me of Aly Raisman. But she still deserved to win, for her difficulty and all that. I really hope Kyla upgrades because I love watching her – in fact it hasn’t been since Shannon Miller that I’ve seen something worth watching like Kyla. All grace and elegance combined with power. I’d love to see her upgrade to give the powerhouse gymnasts a run for their money.

      • Akshay Says:

I agree that Simone kind of reminds me of Gabby on bars as well. I think it might have to do with her tkatchev to pak combination? I guess their routines are similarly constructed. I’ve heard Simone might be upgrading to a double double (Shawn’s dismount), which would be awesome.

Either way, Simone isn’t my favorite gymnastics wise, but she is so likeable. Way, way, way more likeable than Gabby.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Oh yeah, that goes without saying. She seems more liked by her teammates too and that tells you something. It seemed like she and Kyla couldn’t stop hugging – thought that was too cute.

      • Akshay Says:

Well, I think Simone is way better at handling situations (see Carlotta racism stuff). Like (I think it was you, Sanity? This was an incredibly strong point) mentioned earlier, if it was Gabby, we would never hear the end of it. I’m sure Simone was upset, but she’s kind of brushed it off and moved on. This to me goes back to parenting. I’m a big fan of Simone’s parents, whereas I can’t say the same for Natalie.

  38. Flippateer Says:

Good interview with Sveta Boginskaya over at RRG: http://rewritingrussiangymnastics.blogspot.com/2013/10/conversation-with-svetlana-boginskaya.html?m=1

She seems to have a very balanced view of a lot of issues in gymnastics. She was rumored to be a major diva back in her day, but she sounds like she has matured considerably (whereas Khorkina still sounds like an immature diva whenever she gives interviews.) She does confirm Moceanu’s contention from her book that it was Alexandrov, not Bela Karolyi, who did a lot of the work to get Moceanu in Olympic contention in Texas.

And I like her non-partisan tone re: the competitors:

I am rooting for everyone. For Russia, Ukraine and Belarus because my friends are there. For the US because I live here. Even for China because my husband is half Chinese. Overall I follow the principle of โ€œlet the strongest winโ€.

  39. Akshay Says:

What a game.. thought the Sox were going to be down 2-0, but congrats, GTT!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I was gonna say! Last night when I watched I couldn’t help but be like “GTT is probably screaming her arse off right now.”

Oh and I have to wonder if Tori Hunter’s move didn’t cause infertility. Ouch.

  40. sanitynmotion Says:

I watched the AA competition this weekend and really think they need to start feeding Chusong more or something (not to be ignorant, but she just looks so frail!). I don’t know if any of what she grew up with (being malnourished) can be fixed or changed if she started eating more from now on, but I fear if they don’t do something she’ll be too ridden with injuries to be able to compete for Rio. She has a lot of potential. Yeah, she did fall off beam but she didn’t become a headcase after that. I also like Yao Jinnan and hope she gets more consistent on that Mo move – how awesome was that.

All in all though the one thing I came away with from NBC’s broadcast is that I actually miss Elfie. Hearing Nastia’s voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard. I swear. And she never contributes anything interesting or intelligent. I just want to reach my hand through my TV and smack her upside the head. That is all.

    • Akshay Says:

Elfi was incredibly annoying, but at least she could point out the obvious and she could be appropriately critical sometimes. Nastia is just dumb… Brenna is artistic? Mustafina has great form on her triple twist? Maybe relative to Nastia’s rock bottom standard for form on Floor, but either way, she is terrible and has gotta go.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

She just sounds so “breathy” if that makes sense and ultra fake. The way she cuts in – it’s like she’s trying to hard to be a sportscaster or something, if that makes sense. I can’t stand it. I hated Elfie too but her voice/delivery didn’t make me want to scratch my eyeballs out.

      • Short1 Says:

@sanitynmotion Agreed! I was almost glad that there was only 4 hours (total) of NBC coverage because I could hardly stand to listen to her! It was so much better listening to Bart Conner and Amanda Borden during Universal Sports’ coverage.

    • gymnastwannabe Says:

Yes, the Chinese gymnasts need more nutrition. It’s hard for me to watch them b/c I just think about how they must be starved…they look so unhealthy.

  41. mim Says:

maria paseka is engaged.. I thought she was only 16 or 17! but apparently she’s 18.. still so young! is that the norm in Russia? I wonder how this will impact on her focus for gymnastics.

my fiancรฉ and I started dating at 15/16 and got engaged just before my 25th bday. if it’s right nothing wrong with a little bit (or in my case A LOT) of waiting! oh well best of luck to them.

    • Dee Says:

wow! I would bet that young engagements/marriages are probably common in Russia? Who is she engaged to? Maybe he is also a gymnast and they understand each other’s lifestyles. They also could have a longer engagement…I know I was engaged for almost 2 years, but that is short compared to some of my friends!

  42. Uglyfatkid Says:

Has anyone heard from GTT? She’s been MIA an I’m beginning to worry that Nastia put a hit out on her.

    • Tortuga Says:

I was starting to worry too. It’s been quite awhile since her last comment or new blog entry. I thought maybe she was busy with baseball. I just hope that is the case and nothing bad has happened to her. Has she ever been gone like this before?

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I’m sure it has to do with baseball (playoffs right now). Red Sox are winning though so she should be happy.

  43. biyatch Says:

Hey GTT, did you know one of Geddert’s websites–http://geddertreport.com/ — links to your site. LOL

  44. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Did anybody see this video of the Russian team doing some outdoor routines? Seems kind of crazy and reckless to be practicing the bars without any mats but what do I know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SzUUGhouxk

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Looks like they were just doing kips and handstands, which is probably like us going to the park and doing somersaults.

Komova looks like she’s matured big time – like her face is different! Her nose seemed bigger.

  45. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Yeah that’s true. I hadn’t thought about it that way, Sanity, and it makes a lot of sense. I thought the same of Komova! I wasn’t sure if it was just a bit of weight gain from not practicing as much or what but there’s definitely quite a difference!
