2013 World team named for US.

No shocks at all.

USA-Gymnastics official release

Simone Sap Story and I admit I was sapped in. Tough life for a kid and she still has a smile on her face. Though in my experience the smile on her face she had while talking about her birth mother was trying to hide the pain.

Discuss the team in this blog please.

Ebee was named alternate. Thanks Gigi

IMO this was the team they were going to take. Brenna is not a pretty gymnast to watch but she tries to improve and she earned the spot for two reasons. 1 she hit. Ugly as it may be she hit when other gymnasts did not. 2nd, there is no clear Uneven bar/ Beam girl to get the 4th spot. If Mckayla isn’t doing the AA than Brenna makes sense by default. She was 3rd on bars at Nationals with a 6.0 start value on night 1 and a 5.9 on night two (Scoring 14.500 and 14.350 ) She finished 9th on beam with a start value better meant not to be repeated.

After looking at that paragraph above maybe Dowell should not have been chosen. Peyton finished 4th on both bars and beam with the same start value on bars (6.0 and 5.9) and even with the fall she still beat Brenna on beam.

The more I think about this the more I think we should have just sent Simone, Kyla and Mckayla and left the 4th spot open but Marta appreciates gymnasts with big skills. Maybe she is hoping to get lucky.

If I had picked the team it would be Price. I would give her the time to heal and let her try bars. She earned that right earlier in the year. Personally I like Ernst and think she could have been given a shot. If she hits seems to be the worlds everyone is coming up with for Abby Milliet but Peyton did ten times the job Abby did and would deserve the spot before her. I actually am wondering why anyone even thought Milliet had a chance. She tanked Nationals and wasn’t even named to the Nationals team and she must not have hit at camp either because she is staying home.

All to hell with it if Mckayla is ready let her do AA and Dowell can watch from the stands. No one proved themselves at Nationals to deserve the 4th spot except Dowell and she can’t compete those 2 events due to the rules (4 gymnasts total, 3 spots on each event) Hell even scary Skinner would have made this team for vault if Kyla did not earn the AA spot. Imagine the US having 3 girls make the vault finals. (As ugly as Mykayla’s vaults are she easily would have been top 3 on vault and yes I remember the 2 per Country rule)

Anyone else have any opinions?

I am going back to baseball🙂

I guess we all knew it was going to be brenna but I was still holding out hope for ebee. Hopefully she’s the alternate.
Simone has such a great spirit. I’m so glad her grandparents stepped in. It’s ad that she doesn’t even have regular contact with her mom.

    • Case Says:

      Ebee is the alternate.

    • Lis Says:

It’s sad that she doesn’t have regular contact with her bio mom, but she lives with her real mom. Her parents seem like good, solid people.

    • Karlie Says:

I wanted it to be Ebee too, dammit. Oh well.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Eh at least Simone has two parents that love her. That’s all that matters. She’s fortunate in that sense – look how many unloved kids there are out there.

Ebee got screwed for the London Olympics (I mean, she was never gonna make the team but it’s still hard to see a girl make 4th in the AA at Trials and be named Alternate – especially when in 1996 that spot would have been hers). I hope she sticks with it and kills it next year. She needs to stop getting injured. Marta doesn’t like girls prone to injuries obviously.

      • Flippateer Says:

While I think Marta made the right choice in taking Kyla for 2012, it had to sting for Ebee to come in 4th and make the team as an alternate … and yet there’s a great, very classy Gymnastike clip of her talking about how she appreciated the experience of getting to be an alternate – with no visible bitterness or frustrations. Major respect for her poise and grace.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Specialists have killed the AA gymnast. IMO Kyla was not scored correctly and should have beaten Ebee regardless but Marta had to justify her not doing AA so she became “the specialist” not that Kyla did herself any favors in falling on the Amanar but she was winning AA’s months before then all of a sudden couldn’t vault and was head casing. I find it very calculated by Marta the mean old lady

  2. Lis Says:

I don’t understand… are they just not going to put a third person up on bars? Or are they going to put Brenna and her low SV up? Ugh, I wish it had been Ebee, as well.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Dowell kept hitting. That is why she was named to the team. It is very stupid to bring her for bars and beam when he best events are vault and floor but maybe they know something they won’t tell us.

      • Lis Says:

I know. Her consistency and work ethic are great, but we needed a bars and beam specialist and she is not that. Maybe they’re just hoping to give her experience? That would be nice, but not very Martha-like.

      • biyatch Says:

I blame Terrin Humphry and her gage bias for why Brenna is on the team. I will never get over this assault on my eyes:

      • Kylie Says:

        WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

      • Akshay Says:

That was pretty bad, but imo nothing is worse than some of the 2008 tour stuff. This video emerged on Tumblr recently (it was a Nastia performance), and needless to say, I was scarred for life.

      • Gymbee Says:

Was she just warming up by the beam before doing bars? Hahaha.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I couldn’t even watch past 45 seconds. That was a joke. I feel bad for her she was made to do that.

      • Katie Says:

@akshay- was it the butterfly kisses one? I got the creeps when I watched that

      • Flippateer Says:

I watched to 1:22 before giving up. So she never actually gets onto the beam?

      • Akshay Says:

@Katie – I’m not sure what you’re referring to, so I figured I’d just link it instead.

        You have been warned.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I did not need to look at that right before I go to sleep especially with the day I just had. Now I will get a nightmare. Thanks a lot, Off to watch some videos of real gymnasts and hopefully the nightmare won’t happen. Cleanse the soul🙂

      • utgymfan Says:

Oh gosh…I clicked on that knowing it would be bad but now I’m scarred.

      • Tortuga Says:

This is the Butterfly kisses one that Katie is thinking of. I remember seeing this lol.

      • Tortuga Says:

        Totally forgot to link lol!

      • Tortuga Says:

And that wasn’t the right link, my gosh!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Ah no, no, and no.

      • gymnerd Says:

        WHAT. THE. FUCK. WAS. THAT?!!!

    • Lis Says:

I meant beam, not bars. She’s not great at bars, but she’s terrible on beam. Can’t break 14.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I agree with you. I would have taken Ebee of Ernst but I can’t fault Dowell because she has hit at every level. We don’t even know just yet if she will compete. They still might let Maroney do AA

      • Tortuga Says:

I’m sort of repeating GTT here but Dowell seems to be the only consistent one with higher start values. It was only fair that she deserve this spot. Plus Ebee doesn’t need to push herself really hard right after getting back from injury. As much as I don’t care for Dowell’s gymnastics I think she was best suited at this time. I’m hoping her style cleans up and grows on me in the future. There is hope, she is a GAGE gymnast. As for Ernst I just hope she come back stronger and more confident in the years to come. I hope she’s not the new Vega. And Milliet! She didn’t get named to the national team from tanking at nationals but still taken to worlds selection camp. I guess Marta wanted her to know she see’s something in her. We have got to get that girl some confidence. I feel like she just doesn’t know how good she is and so she splats everywhere because she doubts herself. Maybe she’s so disappointed because of something Marta said, also I think she know her time is running out. Is this her 2nd senior season?

      • Flippateer Says:

I’m hoping that Maroney gets to do AA if she’s ready.

      • H Says:

        ditto that:-)

      • Lis Says:

I’m worried about Maroney doing AA only because of endurance. I want her to do really well in event finals and I’m afraid that she would mess up if she had to do AA and if she doesn’t have the endurance for it.

  3. nero Says:

Nice team. No surprises. I hope Brenna is able to connect the Tweddle.

Looks like Gabby has grown. She was 4-11 in London, Asac and Horton are both 5-1.

  4. exgymgurl Says:

I think the competition was yesterday, and no one was really allowed to say anything, because it was just too empty at camp today from McKaylas videos. And if they all competed today wouldnt they all be in the ice bath? Plus Kyla has some kind of silver wrap on her back. There must be no adequate physio at the ranch for even 5 girls.

  5. Laura Says:

I’m hoping that they will let Maroney do AA and then just have Dowell as the “traveling alternate” so to speak…guess we shall see in a couple of weeks. That would make sense if Marta didn’t think anyone else was quite ready for the world stage. What do you guys think?

  6. JAS4 Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Marta puts Simone and Brenna in the AA and uses Kyla and McKayla as the specialist or something like that lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Marta will die if she tries doing that:)

    • gymnerd Says:

That would actually ***almost*** make sense – slap in the face to Kyla & McKayla though.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I really feel like Marta is taking Brenna for the sole purpose of squashing her elite dream and inherently telling her “time’s up, go to college.” Ebee needs to heal still no need to get her up and running on the world stage for the year after the Olympics. If Ebee is healthy next year I can see her being more of a factor for AA – she’s more of an AA’er than a bars/beam specialist anyways.

  7. GymMom Says:

According to the Des Moines Register, Gabby is “training on her own” in LA without a coach.

Gabby said her brother is attending West Los Angeles College and her two sisters are interested in acting.

    Sad. Really sad !

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She is a liar. She may be working out at a gym but she is not training gymnastics and certainly not alone.lol

      • GymMom Says:

Thats what my first thought GTT. Her mother knows that its important to give the impression she is training for 2016 in order for her to stay relevant. But everyone can figure out its a lie!

      • gymnerd Says:

Maybe a Gold’s Gym type of place, but a gymnastics gym? I doubt it. And now her two cow sisters are going to get into acting? Of course.

      • Tortuga Says:

According to Gymcastic Gabby is working out at GymJam. But I think that just means keeping in shape not training gymnastics. I also kind of wonder if they just cover for her and say what Gabby’s camp would want them to say because they’re super fans of hers. Just a thought.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Spanny would in a heart beat.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        Haha, zing! Good one.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

After about a year everyone will know/realize Gabby isn’t coming back and her sponsorships will dry up. Then she might have to make a serious go at it because otherwise she is done on the celebrity circuit. If Shawn is struggling to stay relevant Gabby will have an even more difficult time given her lack of charisma in front of cameras.
Gabby’s sisters are just using her name to get into acting, but they will have a really hard time getting any gigs. They aren’t trained and even the beautiful black actresses have a hard enough time landing roles/gigs in Hollywood, because like it or not Hollywood is as racist as it gets. They tell top-tier black actresses “no” because they are looking for someone “more traditional” – aka, white. Sorry but that’s reality in Hollywood, despite Hollywood being super liberal.

      • sainabou nyang Says:

Hollywood is no more liberal than Georgr Bush. Half the actors and actresses are secret republicans who pretend to be hip and down for the cause because it makes them look good for the public and helps their careers.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah it’s seriously all fake. I mean on one side the Hollywood crowd does as you say – promote themselves as uber liberal to appease the masses and appear to have compassion and be “good” people – on the other side of the coin they hide most of their income through various efforts (establishing themselves as corporations – lower tax rates – and putting their family members on the pay roll is one of the many tricks) and then they make a big stink of donating like $100k to a cause – when in reality it’s like you or me donating $5 to breast cancer research at the local grocery store.

  8. GymMom Says:

West Los Angeles College only offers Associate Degrees. Why would the entire family move across the country so Gabby’s brother could attend community college? It would no doubt be cheaper if they had stayed in Virginia? And her sisters are “interested in acting?” That made me laugh!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

This gets worse and worse as it goes on longer

      • exgymgurl Says:

Its all a primer for their reality show thats coming.

      • GymMom Says:

Yes its “reality” alright! The show already played out…nothing left to interest anyone.

    • gymnerd Says:

I couldn’t have said it better, GymMom.

    • Katie Says:

      Omg. I can’t even.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah it’s not like he got “accepted” there – he just wanted to go there. And yes, you have to establish residency to have in-state tuition (otherwise he should have gone to an in-state community college in Virginia). This was obviously a plan by the mother – let’s all move to CA and get famous – and the brother went along with it because it really doesn’t matter where you get an Associates degree. Them trying to say they moved because the brother is going to college there is ridiculous.

  9. GymMom Says:

Being a huge baseball fan GTT, you would have enjoyed the #TeamOfDreams game at the Field Of Dreams movie site field, that was played yesterday in Dyersville Iowa.

Watching & meeting all these HOF’rs plus Pete Rose was fun! Reggie Jackson; Johnny Bench; Paul Molitor; Rod Carew; Jim Palmer; Ozzie Smith; Frank Thomas; Doc Gooden; Jim Rice; Bruce Sutter; Rickey Henderson & Wade Boggs coming out of the cornfield onto the field was so cool! This was a first…so many retired players playing together. Wade Boggs is an investor in the All Star Ballpark Heaven..future home to several baseball diamonds built around the Field of Dreams, for tournament ball.

I can email you some photos to put up if you’re interested. The CEO of ASBH Denise Stillman is a friend. It was a fun day!

  10. mim Says:

shame about ebee but i guess brenna makes sense.

interesting seeing the reactions on twitter. abby milliet seems genuinely disappointed, i wonder if her expectations are being managed by her coaches or if marta had said something to encourage her. as pretty as her beam/bars are surely she would know being inconsistent is a hindrance? is that too harsh? i like her gymnastics but Marta loves girls who hit when it matters, obviously. maybe it’s just general disappointment who knows. shame she’s not getting to her full potential yet.

i wonder if Marta will swap brenna and Kyla… Kyla specialist and brenna AA?

  11. sanitynmotion Says:

I think it’s smart to take Brenna now. Show her she can’t be a top contender internationally and let her realize in a nice way that college is the best bet. At least she did make a Worlds team for all the work and effort she has put in, gotta give her that much.

    • Dee Says:

True, gotta give her that much. Why do I feel as though she is gonna be a repeat of Kayla Williams AKA the One Hit Wonder?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Hah, Kayla was truly lucky – doubt Brenna will get an individual medal.

I’m assuming if each apparatus gets 3 ppl to compete – and there are 2 AA’ers…then you have the extra spot going as follows (assuming Kyla and Simone are the AA’ers):

        vault – McKayla
        bars – Dowell (oh gawd)
beam – Dowell – unless McKayla shows some competency here
        floor – McKayla

I really don’t see Brenna factoring in much for this team. She’ll be a benchwarmer at most. Ebee would have been in the same position, so may as well leave Ebee as alternate and keep her training schedule so she can heal up some.

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

Brenna kinda reminds me of Jana Bieger in 2005. Give her a bit of experience because she may still be a factor for the Worlds team next year. I don’t think Brenna will stay around for the whole quad like Jana did though. She told Lauren from TCG that she’s planning on going to college on time so I think she’s just enjoying the time she has before things get real serious in 2015

  12. sainabou nyang Says:

How many gymnast can be brought to a world cup? Marta should send Skinner and Ebee to the world cups later this year.

  13. Akshay Says:

Did you all hear that apparently Bruno Gwhateverhisfaceis (Nellie Kim’s partner in crime) is trying to reduce the team size to four?

    • mimi Says:

gaaaaah why not just take the team component out all together then? wtf is wrong with FIG????.

    • katecoursey Says:

So I totally just tried to Google this and got halfway through typing “Gwhateverhisfaceis” before realizing that that’s not his real name….

    • Akshay Says:

My apologies, katecoursey. I couldn’t remember his name and didn’t feel like googling it.

  14. Sara Says:

The Gabby movie is happening…. http://www.deadline.com/2013/09/lifetime-to-do-gabby-douglas-biopic-regina-king-douglas-to-make-appearance/

  15. Jennifer White Smith Says:

I automatically dislike Dowell because she is a Gage gymnast. Why do parents still take their kids to Al Fong and his dumb black ninja glove wearing self is beyond me. I thought it would have been Peyton.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

It is one of those questions we will never know the answer to like where is Jimmy Hoffa buried and why do philosophical discussions about life ruin relationships?

    • Tortuga Says:

Uh oh trouble in Paradise GTT? I hope not. @Jennifer I’m just ranting here but I feel like parents are just selfish about their children’s success and will do anything to get them there. Al Fong produces great gymnasts but it comes at a cost.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Educate me. What does Al Fong do that’s different/worse than say WOGA or anyone else? Does he demoralize his gymnasts or something? I honestly don’t know. I know that Ivana Hong had issues with him but how much of that came from being left off the Olympic team, I don’t know…

      • Katie Says:

@sanitymotion- two of his gymnasts died in the 90s. Christy Heinrich had been retired for five years iirc. Juliasa Gomez had horrible form on her yurchenkos. She was at a few gyms, including Karolyi’s, but her life ending injury happened while being coached by Al. He has the nickname of the Death Coach, but he has produced some great gymnasts in recent quads.
To be honest about Ivana, I think anywhere she would go there would be problems. Not bc of her but bc of her crazy mom. Its funny to think what was going on at woga when she switched to there. Ivanas mom, becca’s dad and valeri liukin, it must have been hilarious

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Oh wow OK – interesting about the nuts-o parents. Really sad and tragic 2 gymnasts died under him. Didn’t realize Heinrich was his gymnast. I like his wife (Armene?) she seems to give the Gage girls their “grace” – except Brenna, hah – but wow. I really liked Sarah Finnegan and even Taryn Humphrey and Courtney Kupets as gymnasts so I guess that’s why I don’t see a problem with Gage. The glove is creepy but yeah if you’re killing your gymnasts…he wasn’t banned from the sport?

That being said, if I had a child that just “had” to be an elite gymnast I’d only want to send them to either Chow or Brestyan.

      • biyatch Says:

I agree with you Sanity about Mihai and Chow. They seem to have very different personalities in the gym, but both seem to care about their gymnasts a great deal. Chow seems a little more nurturing, with Mihai a little more tough love perhaps. At the same time I can’t really see someone with the personality of Alicia flourishing as well with someone like Chow, and same with Gabby doing as well with Mihai. I also really respect how both of them seemed to really learn from their Olympic experience is 2008 to better their gymnasts in 2012. Neither Gabby or Aly peaked to soon.

Obviously Mihai’s girls can’t swing bars but even his level 10s have some of the most explosive tumbling. Chow seems to turn out more well rounded gymnasts but both Shawn and Gabby had funky technique on their Amanars.

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

Kupets was actually with Kelli Hill. I think it was Courtney McCool that was with Gage. Only reason I remember that is because her and Ivana did the same beam mount though.

Al has done a great job with Brenna this year. I think they went a bit too fast with Maddie. She should have just done bars and beam at Nationals.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Oops I meant to say Courtney McCool in my earlier post. Sorry, one too many Courtney’s that year.

  16. Dee Says:

Article about Aly returning to the gym (I don’t think anyone previously posted it, but I apologize if it is a repeat!).

I thought she was realistic in the article (“If it doesn’t happen for Rio, at least I did what I always wanted to do”) and it made me feel good…I really hope we see her again on the international stage soon! I also am excited to see a new floor routine from her, I think being on Dancing probably helped her out a lot in that area.

    • biyatch Says:

I was just about to post that. Its such a healthy attitude to have about returning. I think if she’s back on form next summer she’ll be on the world’s team, her dependability in being able to hit beam in a 3 up 3 count is such an asset and currently, the only other person who seems to be able to do that is Kyla.

    • Flippateer Says:

Agree with all of you. I’m glad to see that the Fierce Five seem to have learned well from the 2008 team’s experiences: if you want to make a comeback, give it as close to 3+ solid years as you can. Now granted, Jordyn’s and Gabby’s training statuses are a bit less clear, but I’m also not convinced that either of them are planning to come back seriously. Glad at least to see the other three back in the gym, and thrilled that McKayla and Kyle are going all-in. It’d be lovely if it becomes clear that Aly is doing the same – Worlds 2014 Team Captain has her name all over it, if so.

  17. Flippateer Says:

This article has a bit more information on Ebee’s performance at camp: http://www.mcall.com/sports/mc-gymnastics-world-championships-price-20130916,0,4765835.story

  18. Flippateer Says:

…and a bit more from Gabby, who says that she still emails and texts with Chow and that “any coach” is a possibility for her in LA: http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/15/gabby-douglas-gymnastics-los-angeles-move-iowa/

  19. GymMom Says:

    Gabby is delusional!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yes, yes she is. Keep eggin those sponsors, Gabby.

      • exgymgurl Says:

No she probably will have a reality show. And DWTS next season. Thats over another million for them and much more if the show is somewhat popular. Honey Boo Boo is popular. And a train wreck. I rest my case.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Honey Boo Boo is at least personable. Gabby is a phony.

  20. sanitynmotion Says:

Does anyone think Maroney will do the triple at this Worlds? I can only hope, right?

    • Flippateer Says:

Have we heard anything about whether she has been training it recently, after recovering from surgery? I haven’t seen even an iota of gossip about it, so I’d given up hope for 2013.

In my perfect dream world, she’d actually be focusing more on UB/BB right now to get into Worlds AA contention for 2013, then start training the TTY for 2014 or even 2015 before pulling it all together in time to be a serious AA contender in 2016. I mean, if she can throw a TTY, she’ll have quite a bit of breathing room re: her two weaker events – effectively the reverse of Shang Chunsong’s situation right now, where her three stronger events prop up an unusually weak vault showing.

Anyway, just a bit pro-McKayla over here. 🙂 I feel that she has the potential to be more than a one-(awesome)-trick or even two-trick pony, and that’s how I’m hoping this quad goes, though obviously it’s way too soon to know.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I’ve seen McKayla’s potential to do really well on beam, so overall her biggest weakness is bars, which is actually potentially better than Aly’s given her form. I think she has a ton of potential overall. I would like to see her be an AA threat to be honest, it would be pretty cool – especially since this comeback is indeed serious. I heard she was able to land the triple on competition surface at the last couple camps or so – not sure if I’m just assisting in a rumor to be spread – but I’d like to see that named after her, so was hoping she’d throw it sooner rather than later, and during a time when she’s really only focusing on 2 events and not on 4.

      • Flippateer Says:

Stoked to hear that she’s been landing the TTY on competition surface recently. That’d be amazing if she debuted it at worlds – I’d love for it to be called the Maroney as well. If she sticks to the Amanar, though, I think it’d be fun to see Biles give her a run for her money as well, as at Nationals. As much as I prefer Maroney’s form to Biles’s at present, they’re both great gymnasts, and I like the idea of a vault EF with some uncertainty, rather than “If McKayla hits, she wins by default.”

  21. nero Says:

JORDYN!!!! Please please please keep training and come back

    • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

I really think Jordyn wants to come back and is clearly training. Other girls from Geddert’s would tweet little convos of when she was in town and in the gym doing double turns still
