The Future

We have talked about Laurie Hernandez before on this blog and she recently won the Parkette’s invite. This is her new floor routine.

She’s a beautiful gymnast and while I am not loving this newest routine there is no denying the kid is the future of USA-gymnastics. I’ll try to forget she’s a Skankee fan:)

I won’t be around tomorrow. Its girls night at Foxwoods.

Boys had their day a few weeks ago now its the girls turn. Gee I hope they don’t show up like we did a few weekends ago:)

Love how Mihai is just over there camped out with a clipboard on the vault….during her routine

    • Elitefan Says:

As someone who hasn’t attended gymnastics meets, I always find it interesting to watch the background at these non-podium meets…love the girls just lolling about on a stack of mats right behind the floor mat while she’s performing…

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I was thinking the same thing. Lest do beam moves 1 foot from the gymnast competing on beam.lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I also chuckled at the “feeling fly like a G-6” background music…didn’t expect that at a gym meet, of all things.

      • Catherine Says:

I laughed when it got to ‘sober girls around me acting like they drunk’.

      • Dee Says:

LOL yea it sort of sucks when it’s in an actual gym b/c there is never decent warm up space…so you gotta warm up on top of people!

  3. Dee Says:

Kind of interesting choreo. She’s def. one to watch in upcoming years.

  4. tulip Says:

How old is this girl? She’s very talented but her choreography is a little too hoochie for my tastes. She could stop all the butt wiggles and should shakes. Unless there is a new COP for “hoochie mama moves” lol

  5. no Says:

I love when knew pictures show up that I have never seen before. That one of Shannon is new.

  6. JAS4 Says:

I could definitely see Laurie making it to Rio just hope she stays healthy!

    • exgymgurl Says:

According to Aly Raisman all of the fierce 5 will be back and it will be the same Olympic team. Shes the authority. Sorry Laurie LOL

  7. gilttrip Says:

For 12, the flashdance head whip is pretty risqué. Love her strength tho.

  9. Exgymgurl Says:

Oh and i dont like to pick on small children but she stick her stomach out and needs her posture fixed. I know she doesnt really have a stomach but the way shes standing on floor it looks like it protrudes too much

  10. biyatch Says:

I hope Kyla has like 4 inch heels on and Mac is in flats, because Kyla looks like a giant standing next to McKayla(who was previously the “tall one”) in that video.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Looking at the most recent camp photo it looks like Kyla is about an inch or so taller than Maroney…they are close though. Still Amelia Hundley is the tallest.

It’d be cool to see the Ranch lineup over time to see how Kyla progressed in terms of height, lol. I wonder where she was in line a year ago…

      • exgymgurl Says:

If you look at that journalist video I linked in the last blog that was about Jan 2012 youll see where Kyla was ( mid pack) versus where maroney was ( by anna li at the tall end) shes grown a lot to overtake all of those people. But she had to be wearing heels in that video.

  11. sanitynmotion Says:

I hate how edited/choppy these Camp videos are…but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

    Simone Biles:

Her bars are looking more and more like Douglas’ – she gets mad height on those release moves.

    • Catherine Says:

This is such a sell out video. She has huge upgrades on the other 3 events planned, her bars is unchanged. Grumble…have to wait for Classics to see anything new…grumble..

I like the fact they’re releasing videos at all though. The Maroney one is by far the most interesting…but it looks like Hundley has decent bars!

      • JAS4 Says:

I thought Hundley’s bars were pretty decent as well it looks like they’ve improved some recently just need a little cleaning up of leg separations and stuff like that but nothing major

  12. Karlie Says:

Catherine, I feel the same way – I really wanted to see Biles’ floor especially, and potentially her second vault. Grr. Come on, USAGymnastics…

  13. exgymgurl Says:

Its kind of like the Chinese showing He Kexin doing a yurchenko full vault…. but they dont want to show too much or give it away before worlds.

  14. byrdisthewyrd Says:

Here’s another video of Brenna Dowell, especially for those who think she just may be that gymnast that is sneaking her way up the ranks. Who thinks she just may be a contender this year? https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qX5RVwAOf7o

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I’m kind of wondering if she’s the reason why Marta is holding off Jordyn…she wants to see what the newbie can do.

Brenna totally has a chance to be a contender. Why not? An amanar, solid bars (same as Jordyn, at least), and it looks like her beam has some difficulty. She’s the total creeper (she’s surprising me the more I see her!) She was doing a double layout on floor, right?

I have a bad feeling Brenna could totally take the 2nd AA spot from Kyla if Kyla doesn’t upgrade.

      • Catherine Says:

She’s training a full in DLO, already had the normal one, a front double pike, double front, amanar, difficult beam and bars. I see her more as a factor next year than this, but you’re right- she could beat Kyla.

      • biyatch Says:

I just remember at the Mexican open Dowell’s leaps and floor presentation made Aly and Jo look like Soviet ballerinas. Left a ton to be desired… Her front tumbling is cool but there was something very robotic about her floor.

I can’t see her overtaking both Price and Ross. On the European tour she was average about 13.7 and 13.55 on beam and floor. E scores in the high 7 range. Even with huge upgrades that’s not going to cut it (or if it does the US is in BIG BIG trouble and better hope like hell the FF come back.)

      • Catherine Says:

Her form is improving all the time, look at the Shap half in Jesolo and again here. Not even the Russians do it that good! She was let down in Europe with the messy Church, which again looks better here. She’s well known as an extremely hard worker. Ebee is looking fierce, Kyla definitely needs to shape up with these two at her heels.

      • Katie Says:

A few people on tumblr who swear that they have reliable sources (who knows if that’s true) say that Jordyn’s decision has nothing to do with Marta or Jordyn’s comeback progress. The reason is 100% because John is going through some issues and jordyn had to put a hold on her comeback until his issues are resolved so he has her just doing conditioning and light training (as seen in the triple twist videos) and working camps. No one will say what the issue is because it would reveal their “source”. I really don’t know what to believe, but if this is really the case, maybe the gym is having financial difficulty or something?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Bet he has issues at home, on the wife front. I know this sounds bad but I can totally see it.

      • mimi Says:

how bizarre! maybe financial, but i dont see why that reveal who they are or how it would necessarily have an impact on how jordyn trains (like going from more serious training to conditioning) unless someone could explain how it all works to me!

      • byrdisthewyrd Says:

This was posted on the Simone Biles fan page listing Brenna Dowel as the winner at the last camp. Hopefully there will be a real all around competition at Classics this year. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=212429648904085&set=a.212401628906887.1073741851.171339019679815&type=1&theater

      • mimi Says:

wow, that would make for an interesting turn of events! i just brenna was more graceful but good for her, she seems like a hard worker.

  15. sanitynmotion Says:

I wonder if…this is just me speculating…Marta told Geddert that she didn’t want the “world” to know Jordyn was back (legitimately) so she’s having him hold off on her making an entrance.

She could be telling him this but in reality just doesn’t want Jordyn on the team.

It would be smart on her part because it simultaneously fulfills his ego while getting her wishes.Kind of like how she held back on telling him that Jo’s beam upgrades wouldn’t count for sh*t on the world stage in 2011/12.

    • Uglyfatkid Says:

I maybe way off base here, but I actually think the decision to hold off is coming from John’s camp, and not Marta. Granted, she’s a conniving witch whom I distrust greatly…but I think this is Johns doing. I think it could 2 things:

      1) Jordyn isn’t ready. I’m just going to say it…John/Jordyn have something to prove. She barely won worlds in 2011, and then missed out at the Olympics. The only point of a comeback is to show/prove that you deserved the win in 2011, and that you could have taken 2012 if you could have competed. Her comeback doesn’t have the impact if she isn’t ready to win the AA. A specialist (bar/beam) means crap to her…the AA is where she proves herself. I think it’s safer to pull her now and site personal reasons, then to have her show up and bust a Nastia. Not that I think she would, but she has to show up to win the AA or there isn’t a point. I think this example also plays into John’s ego. If she isn’t on top…she isn’t competing…period. He has something to prove just as much as she does. He looked like a jack-hole after the Olympics…and he wants to show the world that we were wrong about him.

      2) It’s all hype. I think they (John, Jo, Marta, etc.) want to keep her hidden, and shock the hell out of everyone when she comes back. It’s a MUCH better story if they can say she “wasn’t ready” and still competed and won. This would also showcase her upgrades ad well. This is what I am hoping for because I adore Jo…but I’m not sure if that’s the case. It is weird to me that she has her skills back, yet can’t compete. I have always said something is fishy going on…but we will have to wait and see.

Whatever the case is, I hope:

      1) Jo comes backs and wins
      2) John learned from the past and is upgrading everything they can
      3) Jo stays healthy
      4) Jo continues to give the bird to Marta and does not show up to any camps
      5) Nastia gets a raging case of herpes

      • sanitynmotion Says:

You definitely have a point on the basis of the comeback. If Jordyn has all her old skills back, that’s one thing – you’re right, her old skills aren’t going to be good enough. She definitely needs the new skills.

I would love to see her do a second vault but with Maroney back in the mix there’s no point.

Her bars need much more difficulty and I think if she gets that she can be something to reckon with. Her form is clean and she keeps her legs together. She’s almost as good form-wise as Shawn Johnson.

Her beam of course needs to be completely re-done and she could use better dance elements (honestly if I were John and taking this summer off with her I’d get her in to a dance class or something so maybe she can not be so robotic – I remember that video of her doing beam next to ASac and there was a huge difference just in presentation). This would help her floor as well.

On floor she’s got what it takes to be top 5 in the World but if she added more dance elements and got the D score up she could be hard to beat there.

You’re right though – Jo is not a specialist. Her strengths are floor and beam. She doesn’t stand out “enough” on any one apparatus to make her a factor yet, but I think that could happen with some more focus on technique.

If she’s serious about Rio I think this idea (to hold back for now on a “comeback”) could be a really great idea. Of course us fans hate to see her not come back sooner.

I just hope that when she does, she’ll make the 2008 girls’ comebacks look like child’s play (well, Nastia’s was child’s play, but you know what I mean).

I LOL’d at the herpes comment …maybe some kind of more visual strain, like facial herpes. Haha.

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

LOL. For the record, I do not wish any actual harm to anyone…even Nastia. While I may dislike the way she carries or presents herself, I do not want anything bad to happen to her physically. So when I say that I hope someone gets herpes…it’s only a joke.

Sanity – I agree with your assessment of Jo [shocker right…LOL 🙂 ]. There isn’t a point in upgrading to a second vault with all of the vaulting talent in the US field. However, she might consider upgrading to a completely different vault instead of the Amanar if she is looking to add a few tenths to her score. I would only do this though if she can’t make up the points else where.

Her bars just need better connections I think. She needs to code whore the hell out of it and make it worth every tenth she can squeeze out of it. You are right on about her form, for the most part she’s pretty good in that arena.

Floor – as you stated, more difficult dance elements.

Beam – sigh…anything but last years. She has so much talent and potential here…I just wish they could find a routine that worked for her.

In the end, her comeback isn’t going to work without upgrades. She’s in the same position as Kyla. I love them both, but the girls need upgrades. While I don’t like Vika’s pouty-ness (new word?), I really respect they way she upgraded items from 2011 – 2012. Her Amanar, Patterson, etc. really impressed me (even if the execution wasn’t 100%). She showed that she was willing to put in the work needed to upgrade things in her routines.

        In the end,

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

In the end, I guess what I really want is classics to be here already. I can’t wait to see se real gymnastics. The wait is killing me.

PS – sorry for the broken-up message. My sausage fingers hit send prematurely on my iPhone. I don’t know why I always insist on posting novels while on my iPhone…it never turns out well.

      • mimi Says:

        sanity – love your analysis.
uglyfatkid – your nastia comment got a few chuckles out of me 😉

      • H Says:

        Ditto that:-)

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

Thanks Mimi and H! I’m glad I can add some laughs to your day! 🙂

  16. exgymgurl Says:

Nastia is pretty sick with meningitis. I dont think there are any surprises. I think Jordyn is out for some reason and not competing this year. She doesnt need to. But on the other hand, it would be great to see her. Marta probably already has her team picked.

Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold Kyla for AA Gold

    • biyatch Says:

      soooo many ummmmmms…

    • DL Says:

Her new floor choreography still incorporates at least 10 instances where she snaps her head back! I guess it’s one of her personal dance quirks.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I actually thought her floor looked somewhat like Jordyn’s…at least it’s better than running around with your head back, like “awwwww look Doc no cavities!”

      • biyatch Says:

Kyla used the same choreographer as Jo. All his routines Ohashi, Hundley, Preissman, Weiber, etc. have very similar qualities to me…

      • Dee Says:

At least she is moving and sort of dancing. Who did her routines before this one? I always thought her floor could be soooo much better than it has been the past few years. Does anyone know what music she is using?

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know – Kyla is very graceful and I can see her being a great dancer in the care she takes for each movement she does. Look at McKayla too – when she had someone else do her floor routine it was like a 180 from when she was at Gym Max.

I am not sure who did Kyla’s floor before now but it left much to be desired, to say the least.

      • Catherine Says:

I don’t think Kyla can ever be a great dancer. She’s stiff, her carriage isn’t great. She could be a lot better than what she showed last year, certainly.

  18. JAS4 Says:

I hope Kyla has upgraded the tumbling with the new routine!

    • Uglyfatkid Says:

The whip double back is new (the whip part at least). If that’s it though i am going to be pissed. LOL.

  19. brouhaha Says:

Kyla was such an adorable little munchkin!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awwwww

  20. exgymgurl Says:

This is odd because we know Geddert is travelling he went to Las Vegas to speak at GymCon. What kind of a personal issue could keep him from training her? Its just odd. I doubt its $$ Al Fong and GAGE went through all of that and persisted with their elite gymnasts.

  21. nero Says:

Go Mack, get that triple you fierce beyotch!

    • Gymbee Says:

I agree! I just saw the gymnastike beyond the routine trailer for Simone Biles. They made a big deal “today Simone will attempt the triple” and they obviously cut it right when she was hitting the board.
I want Maroney to get it now more than ever haha.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I totally do too – the amanar should be named for Maroney, the way she executes it! I’m kind of afraid Biles will get the TTY before Maroney only because she’s a definite “in” for Worlds I would think at this point (for the AA and vault, and she could also compete on floor given the noted upgrades).

Adding Maroney to the Worlds mix this year for only 4 ppl would be almost a “waste” of a spot from a strategic standpoint since Biles is equally capable of capturing the vault gold, but I really want to see Maroney do it instead. Yet Biles is pretty much a lock for the AA, so what happens here? If you send Biles and Maroney, they both compete for vault gold and you only have two slots for beam and bars and potentially an added floor routine.

I don’t know…my question is, even given Maroney’s capability at this point, do we think Marta would put her on the 2013 Worlds team if all she is capable of doing is vault? I would think not. She almost needs to prove she can compete for a medal in at least one other apparatus (I’m guessing floor at this point, but that’s probably the hardest routine to get back and even Maroney said she’s not in “routine” shape).

Problem is USA has too many awesome vaulters for Maroney to get to go just for “her” vault.

      • Catherine Says:

Simone has landed 3, all either into the pit or on a mat in the pit. But she has said more than once she won’t compete it this year so Maroney can still beat her to it.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That’s “if” she’s selected to the World team.

Man I hope she does it, but I can’t help thinking they might want to hold her back too given her surgeries and what not.

      • mimi Says:

im cheering on for a mckayla TTY too. i like that even after all her surgeries, getting a taste of hollywood etc she’s still motivated and working hard. she’s bounced back quite quickly in a relatively short time especially given her injuries so who knows how much she can improve in the next month.

i love her for being so matter of fact about her vault finals. she seems to have a heathy outlook on it all.

      • Tortuga Says:

I really want McKayla to get the TTY named after her but with only 4 spots on a world team and Biles pretty much getting a guaranteed AA spot & being a great vaulter as well chances are looking slim. It seems almost pointless to try and make a comeback this year with only 4 spots. Will there be more next year? I feel like a World or Olympic team should be at least 6 spots. That seems fair.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I see Marta taking Mckayla and Kyla based on their names

      • Catherine Says:

It’s a specialist worlds, Maroney is ideal for a second vaulter, possible floor spot. Biles’ vaults are a bonus for her, she’s going as the top all-arounder regardless. Ohashi is not training yet, which is a huge red flag for her readiness to compete this year at all. Wieber looks to be out, Finnegan is out. Ross is likely to take a spot for bars/beam alone, especially if Ohashi is out. Depending on results, Dowell could pip her to the second all-around spot (or Ebee) but I think with some upgrades Kyla’s bars and beam are worth bringing in their own right. A team of Biles AA, Dowell AA, Ross UB, BB and Maroney VT FX is ridiculously fierce, with a fight between 3 to qualify for floor and Dowell potentially qualifying for bars too.

I know, I know, Ross is the Olympian with experience. But Dowell looks very crafty, and it may make more sense for her to do AA.

Worlds 2014 and 2015 will have 6 spots. The worlds after an Olympics will only be 4. The Olympics being 5 is an IOC deicision.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Personally I feel like if the Olympics can only take 5 members, Worlds should be the same. But that’s just me. It makes no sense to cut out that 6th spot every four years.

I agree though I think it will be a fight for that second AA spot. It would have been Kyla’s easily if she had her amanar and floor difficulty up, but now I’m thinking that it may very well go to Dowell.

      • Tortuga Says:

@Catherine I think your picks for a world team are great and I’m thinking very similarly. I don’t want to think Kyla is completely out of the AA just yet. Classics and up coming comps will show us everyones upgrades and what is really shaping up. But of course I want Kyla and McKayla on that team. That’s a dream at this point.
I hate that the IOC cut the Olympic team to 5. That seems so small to me. Plus I have a thing for even numbers lol. Six is the magic number to me. Not to big not to small. We can afford one more spot!

      • biyatch Says:

The reduction from 6 to 5 was a FIG decision not an IOC decision. http://www.intlgymnast.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=358&catid=2:news&Itemid=53

While Dowell’s upgrades look impressive and its great she’s hitting while in camp, I don’t understand how people expect her to go from the mid-56 range in March to the 59/60 range she’s going to need to contend for a world AA medal (and overtake Kyla.) She kind of reminds me of Kytra with better bars.

If Simone is a lock for the AA that many think she is, I still think they will take someone else to vault which would mean Preissman, Price, Skinner or Maroney. Ebee, if not in the AA, could also be useful on bars and floor and Lexie, Skinner and McKayla on floor. (I personally dont think Skinner really has a shot.) Without Ohashi and her huge SV beam seems to be where the void is. Kyla obviously is a contender here.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I keep forgetting about Ebee.

Damn, I wish Classics were here already. Better yet, nationals.

I think I’m hoping for this World team:

        Kyla, Maroney, Biles, Weiber.

Yeah I said it. I want a big fat “surprise!” but doubt that will happen.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Ohashi isn’t even training right now. I am like you, I’ll believe the upgraded execution when the real judges give her those scores.

      • Catherine Says:

Dowell has upgrades since Jesolo, 0.5 on vault, a H skill on floor..beam mount, and her execution is cleaner. She won the AA at the last camp, but she is by no means a lock for worlds at all..just saying, she’s making a strong case for herself. I always saw her being a factor next year, not this. We’ll see!

What I read about the smaller Olympic team is that the IOC put a lot of pressure on some sports, including WAG, to reduce the spots in order for them to include new sports. Sure it was an FIG decision in the end but it didn’t stem from them.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I wonder what sports have been added since? And why can’t they just include them without cutting from others? Makes no sense. It’s not like they can’t change the “rules” to suit whatever purposes (the IOC or whatever)…

I’m guessing Dowell beat Biles and Ross then? Should be interesting to see what happens on the competition floor come Classics.

I just wish that Dowell had the grace of the other Gage athletes. I miss seeing a gymnast with both grace and power. The only ones that seem to effectively combine those are the Russians, and they are whiney babies (with the exception of Musty, who I personally hope wins Worlds AA this year).

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I find it hard to believe she could fix her execution scores enough to make a difference. Marta camp scores do not mean she will get these scores at Worlds.

Mckayla beating Aly at Nationals and not getting those same scores at Worlds comes to mind. I’ll believe it when I see it.

      • Catherine Says:

Well for London they added female boxing, and that’s where we got our only gold from! Kite surfing will be in Rio, and rugby and there’s some including darts that are campaigning for the future. Yes, darts. Sigh. It’s also the reason why rythmic has no event finals in the Olympics like they do at worlds, more money, more places, more athletes. I’d love if acro gymnastics got added.

I did hear it wasn’t the only one having a lesser team size, but can’t remember.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

They take out women’s softball but want to add darts?! Sigh.

I wish they had added tetherball a long a$$ time ago; I was the best in my school in fifth grade, lol. Beat all the boys. They all hated me.

        Darts. Wow.

Next thing you know they’ll add cheerleading (which actually is more of a “sport” in my opinion than darts!)

      • exgymgurl Says:

Darts will be like curling for the summer olympics. I dont understand why they couldnt like say put rythmic gymnastics and acro and a bunch of other indoor things with the Winter Olympics. Gymnastics does not take place outdoors. In the summer.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Haha, I know – but then you also could argue running could be indoors and same with even swimming (the cube in Beijing, for example).

I figured winter Olympics all had to do with ice/snow – I would assume therefore that darts would take place in summer Olympics?

Now that I think about it I can’t think of any winter Olympic sports that don’t have anything to do with snow or ice…

I wonder of Jordyn not competing this summer is not only due to her commitments this summer but perhaps Gedderts as well like his camps and such and things that were probably planned before Jordyn got back in the gym but if that’s the case aren’t there assistant coaches who could be helping coach Jordyn or maybe his wife or something

With all the drama Jordyn endured last yr when she didn’t make the AA, I wouldn’t blame her if she decided not to go for it unless she knew she’d make the AA. Last thing she needs is her face plastered everywhere saying she didn’t qualify again. Plus, I think Marta knows who she wants just like she did last yr..

    What does teamformat 5-4-3 mean?

    5 in qualicfication and/or …?
