While I was sleeping: The non Olympian edition

MIAA has reinstated boys gymnastics. Not sure if anyone remembers ( I only do because it happened in my state but last year they decided to cancel the sport and the guy in charge called gymnastics a girls sport. Aly tweeted something about it. Well Steve Penny takes credit for them changing their minds.

Casey Jo Magee has become an assistant coach at Mizzou Gymnastics

An article about University of North Carolina’s incoming freshman Lindsey Lemke. I linked it for two reasons. You people like Jordyn Wieber and it talks about her and because Lindsey gets what her parents sacrificed for her. Its a nice read.

Olympian related news.

Alexandr Alexandrov will now be coaching in Brazil. I heard this rumor two days ago and forgot to post it but it has now been confirmed by Rewriting Russian Gymnastics.

Jordyn will be holding a camp for gymnasts at her gym
. Guess we know why she isn’t training to compete. John Geddert is going to get every penny out of Jordyn while she is still relavent if it kills him.

Parents can pay 99.00$ for the privilege of watching their children watch Jordyn and they get free access to all of John’s blow hard videos. I like John but these types of events and his rules about gymnasts paying him a % of what they make is not painting him a good light.

Steve Nunno wanted to be Shannon’s agent and she was smart enough to say no. I wish Jordyn’s mother would see through Geddert.

Wendy Hillard is hosting a Harlem Gymnastics gala. Gabby and Dominique Dawes love to spout they were the first African Americans to win this or that it would be nice to see either of them give back and help out Wendy’s foundation.

Cool about Casey Jo! My friend from my home country is a senior there.

  2. sanitynmotion Says:

Wait, Geddert asks for a % of what his gymnasts are PAID?! I get it if the Weibers “wanted” to do that for whatever reason but for him to demand it…now that’s something else. He’s already paid a pretty penny to coach them, I’m sure!

That kind of pisses me off if that’s the reason Weiber’s not competing. I would think though that Weiber must have been OK with it; if she really wanted to compete this year she would/could.

Maybe he figured since she was taking a “break” he would sneak in a camp and have her headline it. There’s a word for this…like “taking advantage of” or maybe “milking it” but there’s another word I want to say and it’s not coming to me. Ugh.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

We had a discussion about his new rules awhile ago.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I remember that but I didn’t look too hard into it. I remember there being talk about the rules changing in “some way” since Jordyn left (to do the after-Olympic fun stuff) and thought the rules were only really concerning attendance and notification when you were going to leave the gym or something like that on a permanent basis.

That’s pretty bad though. To be honest I’m surprised that many parents stuck with him. No other coach I know of does that sort of thing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I am pretty sure he demanded a % of money gymnasts make that train at his gym including College kids and that is why he lost a lot of talent.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

So if someone gets a free ride to a college/university would the parents be on the hook to pay him a % of that reward/scholarship?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They never specified what he gets but he gets something

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah that is stupid. He got paid for the 12+ years he was coaching these kids and they put just as much time and effort – well, more effort, same amount of time – as he did. Plus these kids don’t get one-on-one with him the whole time he coaches them. I think it’s insane any coach would ask for a “cut” of what his/her athlete makes.

Like you said, he’s not an agent.

      • Case Says:

John didn’t demand a % of Jordyn’s earnings. The Wiebers offered that up.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

John sent a notice to anyone training at his gym that they had to pay him. If Jordyn trains there she is part of that

      • Katie Says:

Ooh yeah I remember how he posted “guidelines” about the right way gymnasts should leave/switch gyms and how elite gymnasts on the national team should give a percentage of their stipend to the coaches. At first everyone thought Jo was leaving twistars then we thought it was a dig at gabby but it was most likely just for his benefit

    • Gymnerd Says:

      @Sanity: “exploitation”?

  3. exgymgurl Says:

how could we have missed the opportunity to have asac or hollie vise choreograph routines for us?

    • exgymgurl Says:

This website also lets usknow that asacs nickname among friends is sac face. Plus the wonderful pic of her blonde with a zebra print shirt at the bottom is priceless

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That was in 2009, right? lol

I saw Lauren Hopkins tweet Asac about it and ask her what she’s doing with her career and all now. I wonder if she ever wrote back to her. Lord knows she put that “book” on the shelf. Dammit.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

And I’m laughing too now at the thought of what kind of “butt rubbing” routines these two would make.

There’d be a lot of butt and thigh rubbing!

      • Tortuga Says:

Bahahaha! They’re spawning many other butt rubbing routines for juniors, which is even more awkward for them being so young. Well have a lot of butt rubbing for years to come!

      • exgymgurl Says:

I want Kerri Strugg and her passionate hand shaking. Now…. get her choregraphing these routines…

      • Katie Says:

Haha Kerri strug floor routines. What meet was it when bogi was literally mimicking one of her ridiculous moves?

  4. exgymgurl Says:

There is a “exclusive music” offer that no one will get the same cut of music as you…. maybe this is where all of the cuts of vises 03 music are coming from and shes choreographing these routines…. wasnt it bring it on where everyone got the same music? Hilarious

  5. nero Says:

What is going on in Russia Land? 0 medals in Beijing to 6 in London and coached the one girl who single handily brought Russia back from the dead and you let him go to Brazil??? Whatever Russia.

I thought Jordyn’s mom said it was their decision to give the gym a % because they bought the gymnova equipment for Jordyn to train on for London. I remember her saying the gym took on somewhat of a financial burden for Jordyn specifically and they wanted to help. I’ll poke around to see if I can find that.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I think Aliya was over him. There was some thing about when she won at Europeans she didn’t invite him onto the podium and he was upset (or people said he was upset)

As for the money giving him a % of her marketability is wrong. He isn’t an agent. He gets paid enough to be her coach. Unless he is training her for free this makes no sense.

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

The Euros thing was definitely shady. He was supposed to be there and then suddenly wasn’t and in the interview afterwards she said that she hadn’t even talked to him about it. They were definitely separating them so she wouldn’t care when he finally left. I think the russians are insane. Things have been going so good for them in the past few years and treating the guy who brought that back like this is just ridiculous.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It is weird but I think of it this way. If we could get rid of Marta would we do it? I would.

She is batting 333 as far as I am concerned. She had 3 chances to win gold and won one and she hurt mentally and literally so many people on the way.

I really think that Alexander probably was an ass to deal with and they just got fed up.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Part of me feels like if Marta were a man they’d have been rid of her by now. But since she’s a woman she gets away with the immorality and the manipulating and the lying. When her husband did it they eventually canned him…and replaced him with his wife, who does the same thing only gets away with it behind the female persona.

That’s just a hypothesis I have but part of me thinks this might be the case.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That makes sense. Bela would have been gone

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

I get that. I think the difference is that here the system Marta started could still continue after she’s gone. The camps wouldn’t have to be in Texas anymore and not so deathy (is that a word?) but with Russia, I dunno. They’re so up and down. 2010 was great for them to win at worlds but really they shouldn’t have. China and US had to melt down a bit for it to happen after their meltdown. It’ll be interesting to see how things go now as the quad goes forward.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah the Russians think they won Worlds in 2010 by a strong margin but actually the US would have won if they had gone with someone else (not Mattie Larson) on floor. It was Mattie’s fall and leaving out a required component that lost the US the gold.

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

I just rewatched the 2010 worlds for the hell of it the other day and the US actually lost by .2. If Mattie would have done her required component the US would have won. I feel like the big thing Russia needs to get rid of is thinking every time they lose its because the judges screwed them. Komova lost in 2011 because of her beam wobbles and her floor and in 2012, even with Gabby’s questionable scoring especially on beam, could have won if she would have just taken one step and freaking STOPPED.

      • nero Says:

Mattie didn’t even need her punch front in order for the US to win in 2010, all she had to do was not fall on her double pike and the USA would have won by .8 in fact if Alicia would have stuck her Rudi we still would have won with Mattie’s melt down on floor. I do believe Marta was not so keen on having Mattie do floor but the other coaches overruled her.

I agree the Russian coaches act like children when they lose. I’m all for sticking up for your gymnast and and not being a PC robot when it comes to judging but the way Rodionenko talked about Jordyn, a 16 year old child in 2011, was like she killed her cat or something.

I kind of thought it was a little scary how obsessed Russia was with the USA leading up to London. I get they’re your main competition but they literally mentioned them in every interview they did. Maybe focus on yourselves instead of your rivals.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That’s probably why they lost – they were always too focused on the US. In fact they were so fearful of the US vaulting capabilities they brought Paseka just for her iffy amanar. Yet Russia made up for it in bars so I never knew what the big deal was with that.

What did Rodionenko say about Jordyn?

And Worlds was a small stretch for Russia to win. ASac never stuck that vault though so that would have been expecting a bit much. They should have actually done what Marta was advising and not put Mattie on the floor – she killed her elite career by losing it for the US.

      • Catherine Says:

The Rodionenkos are not coaches, they are just figureheads. Evgeny Grebenkin is the current head coach, former bars coach.

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

I feel like the russians are blaming Komova not winning all the medals on Alexandrov and saying he favored Aliya because she came home with 4. That’s just dumb. Komova’s issue wasn’t the amount of training she did leading up to the olympics or anything like that, it was all mental. If she finds a way to control her emotions during routines and not give up so easily when something goes wrong she could have come home with 4 as well. Although I hate the idea of her knocking out Tweddle of the bars medals.

    • Catherine Says:

Russia’s loss and Brazil’s gain. I’m excited for Brazil, disgusted at the Rodionenko’s who have been pulling the same shit for decades now, and confident that Mustafina is wayyy too strong for this to drag her down. In fact the sources of this info are reassuring that nothing will change, as he had little to do with her coaching after he was sacked.

      • brouhaha Says:

I’m really excited for Brazil, especially since the next Games is in Rio. We’ve seen how much UK MAG and WAG grew in this past quad. Brazil WAG in London seemed to have such a fighting spirit, and has had a lot of individual talent despite lack of gyms, funding and coaches (Dos Santos, Hypolita, Barbosa)

  6. exgymgurl Says:

How did I miss the original cast of boy meets world reunion at the ATX television festival that no one in Austin has even heard of? All of them…..sigh…… even Matthew Lawrence showed up….

That lady that said Aliya would win nothing is in charge and she did not like being shown up by Alexander and Aliya…. Its like hes the Steve Nunno of Russian gymnastics… They just dont want him around ….. And Brazil wants to make top 6 for 2016….

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I read about the Boy meets world thing today. I wanted to fly in

      • exgymgurl Says:

How stupidly underpublicized was that? AWFUL

      • Tortuga Says:

I know I saw pictures on Twitter. Very sad I didn’t know previously. That was my favorite show growing up. Endless quotes and memories. I’m worried the squeal might be a dud.

    • JAS4 Says:

It’s seems like Valentina is always spouting off something negative especially about Mustafina and Grishina I think Mustafina is to Valentina as Memmel is to Marta lol

  7. Catherine Says:

It’s all about Okino for me, and Umeh who was just bitchin’, though Canadian, not American. These girls were awesome and Okino probably had more impact on gymnastics than Dawes did- she has a few moves named for her in the code.

    • Katie Says:

I loved okino. Aside from her weird video that makes you want to take ecstasy.

    • brouhaha Says:

Okino has a much more interesting back story that Dawes – she was born in Uganda, is half Uganadan/Romanian and speaks Romanian fluently (take that Moceanu!), has more hard skills in the COP, was part of the Karolyi six-pack, and doesn’t speak in the third person in interviews. Okino>Dawes

      • sj0126 (@sj0126) Says:

i loved the story that she used to translate what the karolyi’s were saying to each other

      • mimi Says:

i didnt know anything about betty okino so i wikied her and found this interesting: “When the Karolyis discovered Okino understood Romanian, they switched to speaking Hungarian in the gym.”

that is just so, so creepy.

  8. sainabou nyang Says:

Wogymnastike posted a pic of Nastia at the Russian training center at Roundlake. The picture was from her twitter page. From my understanding Nastia is currently in Russua visiting family. No clue if Valeri is there, but wouldn’t it be interesting if he was there visiting the Rodionenkos.

    • Gymbee Says:

I saw that she posted it. I think only her and her mom. She’s been posting tons of photos.

    • Uglyfatkid Says:

Can Nastia just defect already and save all of us from having to see her stupid face for awhile.🙂

What if she is the answer to the Russian coaching problem, and thats the real reason she’s there? We saw how well she coached the completely unbiased, fair, and completely amazing progymnastics challenge. Maybe she is going to be the next Alexandrov?

Oh wait, she was a bitch to lead Russian “coach” (I can’t remember her name now, she was big in the early 90’s) During th PGC. Well, maybe they will take her anyway. A guy can dream right?

      • Gymbee Says:

Svetlana Boginskaya🙂 How amazing would that be. I can see it now, Nastia screaming and running up to the judges “it was a DELTCHEV dammit!”
Who wants to bet Nastia will take Nellie Kims job eventually?

      • Uglyfatkid Says:

Svetlana!! Thank you! I couldn’t remember her name for the life of me.

Lol. I agree…she’s the next Nellie Kim for sure!
