So happy to see Yao Jinnan coming back strong on events outside of Uneven Bars. Perhaps not yet good enough to medal again in AA but I loved her in 2011 and I loved her bars in 2012. Now to see her make an amazing comeback this year.

That DTY at the Olympics prelims was imo very scary.

    • Brouhaha Says:

I really hope she medals at this Worlds! she’s my favorite Chinese gymnast in so long

  2. JAS4 Says:

I think the Chinese may be pacing themselves bette this quad so as not to burn out before Rio so they have a better shot of making the podium

  3. Catherine Says:

Total splatfest. I’m most excited about Liu Tingting. She won’t be senior until 2016, and her difficulty is still low but wow is she bursting with potential. She is quite powerful and springy but still has beautiful lines on bars and beam. Thankfully she is rewarded for it, her e-scores are always above an 8, which in China is like getting 9.5.

Shang Chunsong is still unreliable, but she had better be the second AAer at worlds, I don’t want to see Huang Qiushuang again. Imagine that she got penalised for having too long a vault run…both days. Tan Jiaxin had a bit of a meltdown but she used to be a one eventer, hopefully she can get more consistent as she is very powerful with great endurance and they need that. My worlds team would be Yao Jinnan, Shang Chunsong, Zeng Siqi and Tan Jiaxin.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Huang Qiushuang is the only Chinese gymnast I have ever hated. I just can’t take what a spazz she is.

      • icemeltsfast Says:

lol that seems to be a common sentiment but I don’t see how she’s any different than all the other headcases in China’s history– Yang Bo, Li Ya, Mo, etc. Hell, even Komova headcases on beam often enough…

  4. GymMom Says:

More evidence in spite of bootcamps, special diets/food, long distance running etc., Shawn cannot post photos of herself wearing Nike products. Why? Its all bs.

    • Brouhaha Says:

Why does her subheading on twitter say student?? When was the
Last time she was in school, 2010?

      • GymMom Says:

Shawn hasn’t been in school since before 2008 & probably well before that.

      • Gymbee Says:

She probably means “student of fitness” or some bs like that.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

It is kind of odd that, being a part of this whole “me me look at me” generation, she wouldn’t put on the clothes and take a picture of herself in them. She obviously isn’t uncomfortable doing that sort of thing given her Nike photo shoots from when she was in full training/gymnastics mode.

  5. GymMom Says:

    Nice article about Jordyn.

    • Brouhaha Says:

She’s so classy, glad to see her back in action!

    • nero Says:

LOVE HER. With not many (any?) foreign athletes training amanars, her hopefully upgraded bars and a solid beam and floor she could have a chance. Especially in the coming years where the world teams will be 6.

I don’t think I’ve wanted anything more in the gymnastics world than a successful long term Jordyn comeback.

    • Biyatch Says:

I do hope Jordyn is able to make peace with gymnastics and leave the sport on her own terms. Expectations were so lofty for her that I feel like media portrayed it like she had a games like ASac and not leaving as an Olympic champion.

Stuff like this kind of makes me sad for her, when you see Gabby and Aly hobnobbing in Hollywood and with high profile sponsors and events and then you have Jo in Missouri.

      • nero Says:

Jo is from Michigan. And honestly even if she would have won TF gold, AA gold, beam bronze and floor silver I highly doubt she would have had much of an impact on the media scene. She just doesn’t seem like the ‘type’ on both ends. She doesn’t put on a super bubbly golly shucks I’m always smiling and happy routine like some ~other~ gymnasts *cough Shawn and Gabby cough* In order to get sponsors and advertisers don’t like introverts.

I have this fantasy in my head where Jordyn, Aliya and Viktoria trade world AA wins the next three years with Jordyn coming out on top in Rio.

      • Gymbee Says:

I agree nero – but didn’t Jo just sign with Adidas though? That’s something.

      • GymMom Says:

Gabby may be hobnobbing but she’s not getting paid for that. Aly is the only one who has gotten major endorsement deals. I applaud Jo for going back to school & back to reality! It will serve her well in the future. Gabby will be a broke-ass nobody in a few years trying to stay relevant! Aly is done with high school, so she’s in a different category. She went to prom etc. & won’t have regrets about those things later.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Actually gymom Im sure gabby gets appearance fees for what you are calling hobnobbing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Do they get paid to go to award shows? that is weird

      • Exgymgurl Says:

If they present something yes. If its the essence awards and their name is announced yes. If its teen choice yes. Thats probably why kyla didnt go to the cartoonnetwork thing.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Agh, so irritating. I tried reading that article and all I get is pop-up ads and a “sign up here” to read sort of thing. What did it say about Jo?

  6. GymMom Says:

Moms and McDonalds? Not a good combo. Moms don’t appreciate their marketing schemes apparently? Gabby is mentioned. Figures!

  7. AKF009 (@AKF009) Says:

Nice routine from Huang Huidan on UB.

    • Catherine Says:

It’s a great routine and she’s flighty, but her feet on stalders and stoop throughs annoy me, it’s quite jarring on such a great line. It’s almost a pity that He Kexin, who has won the title since 2007 didn’t win since it’ll be her last national games prelims, but then she almost did win except for a small error…and HHD needed a boost after having a pretty crap competition prior to UB EF.

  8. exgymgurl Says:

Okay I did not realize Gabby had her own separate cornflakes boxes. I saw them on the “closeout” rack at Walgreens for $2. Thats cheap…. LOL…
As for Jordyn maybe because she didnt win as much as was expected we get a Kwan or a Miller and she goes two quads. I was pretty sure she was one quad and out… But we shall see.

    • GymMom Says:

Gabby’s endorsement deal with Kelloggs ended when the tour ended. “Clearance rack at Walmart?” Must be stale by now.

      • exgymgurl Says:

Thats not entirely true. She and Aly were signing Kellogs product cards only at SCAM…. which was after the tour. If you havent seen the contract dont make comments GYMMOM. They were well before the “sell by ” date I just dont think that walgrens is carrying Corn Flakes anymore. Kelloggs has their deal with USAG and I think they get whomever they want in the athlete pool.

  9. GymMom Says:

    Cute photo of Aly.

  10. GymMom Says:

    Jo’s Adidas endorsement. http://news.theelegantsports.com/2013/03/jordyn-is-all-in.html?m=1

    • Biyatch Says:

Adidas also signed McKayla, Jake Dalton and Danell Leyva. McKayla is getting her own signature line ala Aly and Gabby with GK. Plus they are sponsoring GAGE.

It appears Mac will be making a cameo in Aly’s DWTS package this week.

    • nero Says:

Ok, can someone explain the leotard thing to me? Back when the national team was sponsored by whoever it was (was it adidas?) and now that it’s Under Armour I was under the impression that GK would still make the leo and just slap their logo on it. I’m sure they would have some type design input but that GK would make and manufacture the leos.

So is that how it is? When Mckayla gets a signature line with Adidas, it’s really GK who is making it? If that’s true I’m surprised GK is super OK with being the middle man between 2 major corporations and not have any of ‘their’ leos out on the world stage. Whatever it takes to survive I guess.

      • Biyatch Says:

GK used to make adidas leos but they have totally split. In November 2012 GK issued this statement: “After months of negotiations, Elite Sportswear and adidas were unable to come to a mutually agreeable renewal of our global licensing agreement. While the former partnership was successful and positive, the two companies could not agree on mutual goals for the future of their relationship.”

adidas leos are now made by elegant sports (i believe thats the name of the company) and no longer have any sponsorship with USAG. http://www.theelegantsports.com

Under Armour is basically just slapping a logo on to GK leotards and then using legit UA brand products for warm-ups, shoes, etc. Unlike adidas, Under Armour is not having GK manufacture an “Under Armour line” for public sale. So the only UA leos that exist are national team leos.

Whether the split between GK and adidas had anything to do with the split between adidas and USAG is anyone’s guess. USAG has been in bed with GK longer than with adidas, but who knows.

        Hope that helps. 🙂

      • nero Says:

Ahh, that explains why Adidas was poaching and snatching up all those high profile gymnasts. Cool, thanks for explaining it 🙂

      • Biyatch Says:

Indeed. GK has Aly and Gabby (and Gabby has Nike) which would preclude them with signing with adidas gymnastics and adidas has Mac & Jo.

  11. exgymgurl Says:

Under Armour and Adidas both pay / paid HUGE licensing fees to outfit the national team. This is not just LEOs its warmups etc. Because leotards like skating costumes are specialized apparel, rather than Under Armour and Adidas bringing people in house to make them it makes sense to subcontract that, and then have their leos sold under the GK elite name to everyone else. Adidas now is just having another company like GK make leos for them, since GK is making the leos for Under Armour. Im sure GK can’t really afford to pay USAG the huge licensing fee, and then GK would also have to make bags / warmups etc.

    • nero Says:

So I guess the girls’ sponsors just have to bite their tongue when their on the national team competing wearing all their competitor’s warm-ups and leos with their logo plastered all over them.

      • nero Says:

they’re on the national team* blech

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Alicia used to wear underarmour stuff for practices and for all the pics she tweeted of herself. She only ever wore adidas for competitions where it was required. Shannon Miller used to change leos mid competition to make her sponsor happy.

      • Gymbee Says:

It’s the same with all sports though. You have individual athletes being sponsored by one thing, and the team they are on sponsored by something else.
