Boston Marathon Bombing

I am fine thanks for the concern. I was at work twenty minutes away from the bombing and my thoughts go out to anyone effected.

 I’ll have more later…………

Someone got the bombing on tape, they have someone they think is connected to the attack in custody (the idiot is in the hospital with burns. That’s called karma)

If you need any more proof that baseball is better than any other sport in the US read all the recaps of tonight’s games. Almost all of them mention a moment of silence for what happened. Go read the NBA recaps and you find none.

They were chanting lets go Boston in Oakland. The guy from Philly had, pray for Boston written on his glove and even NY had something written on a College building (okay so most of those kids probably aren’t from NY) and while I don’t agree the world should be rooting for Boston sports teams due to this tragedy it was nice to see.

Glad you are ok GTT. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

  2. sanitynmotion Says:

Whew. My favorite blogger is safe.🙂

Heard the person in custody is a Saudi national? Or that could be the media spinning things – I never know anymore.

    • GymMom Says:

I heard that too. My sister works close by & she said she heard the blasts. She & my Dad have run Boston many times.

One of the dead is 8 yrs old I believe? A 3 yr old was seriously injured as well. Many of the injured lost limbs.

Cell service was immediately shut down to prevent possible detonation of bombs with a cellphone. Terrifying!

  3. Case Says:

Glad you’re okay GTT. Prayers to the city of Boston. I personally knew five runners and all of them are okay.

This world we live in is so sad now.

  4. Tortuga Says:

Glad you’re alright GTT. I saw one video on the news that barely caught the first bomb and the second off in the distance. I’ll keep Boston in my prayers.

  5. sainabou nyang Says:

I was reading about this online. Im speechless.

  6. Exgymgurl Says:

I hope Aly comes out and nails it for boston

  7. Cookie Says:

Such a tragedy. I’m glad you’re ok GTT.

If I was the nurse/doctor for the guy in custody I would conveniently “forget” to give him painkillers. Burns are incredibly painful, he deserves it.

    • GymMom Says:

Acting inhumanely towards other human beings is not going to help.

      • byrdisthewyrd Says:

I agree GymMom, especially since we don’t actually know who was involved yet. I think the only reason they’re checking out this guy is because he is a Saudi national, not because they have any actual proof that he was involved or caused this tragedy.

    • Katie Says:

They are reporting that the Saudi national does not look like he was involved. He let the authorities search his apartment in Revere and he is no longer listed as a person of interest.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I want to know who the person with the backpacks was. You know now at any marathon nobody will be able to be a spectator/enter with a backpack!

Sooner or later we’ll have to deal with TSA at every venue/event we choose to go to.

      • Katie Says:

@sanitymotion- i know. it’s going to be ridiculous.

  8. Catherine Says:

Horrendous news. Glad you are fine GTT, I hope all you know are too.

  9. tulip Says:

So sick of violence. Some of the more recent reports from the witnesses are truly gruesome. Not reading anymore, makes me sad, angry and sick all at the same time. An 8 year old was killed. Awful.

So glad you are safe, GTT.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Thanks Tulip. It is even worse when this happens and kids end up dead. I think that is why Sandy Hook was so huge.

  10. GymMom Says:

I have to say this….sorry. Aly has definitely gained weight. I wonder if all the make-up & spray tans are affecting her? There are chemicals in them that mimic hormones. She still looks good though.

    • Case Says:

I’m never one to comment on weight but I agree. At first I thought it was the costumes but she is definitely bigger.

      • Gymbee Says:

Anything else would be weird IMO. If she still was as fit as the Olympics, with much less training than she did back then (and likely with a more liberal diet than before), she should start selling books or something. “The Raisman diet”.
Doesn’t look like she has rock hard abs anymore. I think she looks really good!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

i wouldn’t say it was the chemical/spray tans – although you clarified your point below – only because it’s not like the other “stars” are also gaining weight. Most stars lose weight on this show – in fact many have professed it got them the best body they ever had. I don’t know who it was but one of them (maybe Kirstie Alley?) claimed to have lost like 20 lbs or something like that.

It’s only the gymnasts that end up gaining weight on this show because what they do in their former “daily” lives was SO much more rigorous than DWTS – to everyone else, this show pushes their bodies to the max but to a gymnast, this show is a nice break! It just shows how hard you must really work to be an elite gymnast.

  11. exgymgurl Says:

I think shes wearing a push up sports bra. It looked like if she has gained 5lbs its in her boobs. I thought she did awesome. She has this really goofy personality that is funny and cute. I like her way better than Shawn. I didnt think Aly would be relatable, but she totally is and her work ethic comes through. She takes the feedback and gets better which is how she ended up in the olympics. Good job Aly!!

  12. DL Says:

Gah, so horrible. I can’t even wrap my mind around this kind of evil. I’m glad you’re okay, GTT.

  13. GymMom Says:

GTT glad to hear you’re ok. I think Aly’s weight gain is probably a combination of factors….”craft services,” lack of sleep, & the toxic chemicals in the make-up & fake tans.

Regardless, I really think she could win DWTS.

Meanwhile, Gabby’s family is sponging off of Gabby & others. Dining at Nobu Malibu and probably thinking about living in LA, Gabby’s mother is still HUGE! Everything is all fun and games until the money & Gabby’s post-London fame wears off. Then they will become deadbeats again & blame someone else for their troubles!

I almost feel sorry for Gabby. I said “almost.” She doesn’t mention her host parents anymore. They were good for what they provided but Douglas/Hawkins family has moved on. So has Coach Chow, apparently.
    He has a new protege.’

    • Gymnerd Says:

Help for the unnedjumicated -what are “craft services”??

      • Gymbee Says:

It’s like the food table🙂 Production sets provide catering for everyone involved, so the director, camera crew, talent etc dont have to bring their own lunch.

  14. Alex Says:

As for Aly… Her body fat % as an elite athlete was unsustainable.
I’m an athlete too, and I dipped pretty low over the summer to the point where my doctor gave me a lecture. It isn’t healthy nor is being that lean all that attractive….give the girl a break. She’s growing up and not training 40 hours each week. Anyone who comments on others’ weight should have to post a bikini pic of themselves moving forward….. That should be a rule.🙂

We are all like, oh, the media! Promoting unhealthy self image!!! Look no further than here. If you wouldn’t say it about your own daughter, keep it to yourself. Please.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I appreciate you making rules for my

      • allie Says:

Sorry. It’s a touchy subject for me and it is hard for me to see women, some of them mothers of daughters!, saying such unkind things about young girls. 😦

    • GymMom Says:

Do you feel that way about people making fun of a pregnant Kim Kardashian?

      • exgymgurl Says:

Kim Kardashian posed in a diaper (white hot pants) on the cover of Cosmopolitan. Kim Kardashian wears see thru stretch pants with no panties. Kim Kardashian deserves all the ridicule she gets because she is in fact ridiculous looking

      • exgymgurl Says:

I mean Kim K has ginormous fake boobs for her body (all of her sisters except the underage ones have implants) and now that shes preggo they are out of control giga–ginormous….

Not to mention Kim K is married to one guy ( Kris Humphries) and hes claiming fraud, while shes preggo with another guys child….. Shes like a Jerry Springer freak show except shes rich. And now that ridiculous Ray J that she made a porn tape with wrote a rap about her. Really…..shes such a role model….NOT

I can keep this up all day long. Look at Kate Middleton. She has pregnant fat face like most people get but she doesnt choose to look and wear ridiculous clothes. And shes married and dignified in the way she is handling things. She even wears her clothes more than once. Its shocking….

      • DL Says:

Kate Middleton looks so awesome pregnant. I like that she’s altered and repurposed clothing she already has in her wardrobe like a normal person would…I know it’s just great monarchy PR, but it’s nice to see an effort not to be wasteful.

I have to say, I’m uncomfortable talking about how teen girls are “fat” and in general I feel bad picking on appearance rather than attitudes or behaviors or folly.

This isn’t to say that other people can’t point out if someone’s been hitting the craft services table with a vengeance. I mean, a fact is a fact. I’m not trying to throw shade at GymMom here.

I have to admit, I’m not above laughing at Kim K when Dlisted posts pictures of her super tight and sometimes ill fitting maternity wear. I think she’s quite beautiful, but she’s somewhat ridiculous.

      • allie Says:

I don’t comment on people’s weight in a negative manner, period. I just won’t do it. Now for the OUTFITS she is choosing to wear….that’s another story!😉

      • exgymgurl Says:

Not only the outfits, she makes a ridiculous spectacle of herself to make profit…. Essentially that is her job…. to be a freak show that people stare at.

    • Tortuga Says:

Hahaha, I would find it entertaining if we had to post bikini pics to talk about others weight, but it’s not my blog :p Women and self image is a very touchy subject no matter what age. And we make it worse on each by judging one another so harshly. Gymnasts have a tough time especially coming out of the gym. They train 40 hours a weeks and have to be restrictive and still struggle. Then coming out of the gym you pretty much have to be anorexic or bulimic or never stop running to stay the same size. Mother nature tends to take over. Unless you have that twig body type like McKayla and Gabby even Kyla, you’re likely to have some weight issues adjusting to a new life style. I think Aly has already been struggling with body image since the Olympics and that’s why we saw her wearing loose fitting clothing so often.

      • allie Says:

Agree. I wish we could be kinder to one another. I know I would be very upset if I read someone being mean about my weight, and I’m a grown woman. I think it’s cowardly and extremely unkind to sit behind a monitor and bash (or even point out) when we think people have gained weight. These are real people we’re talking about, with feelings and insecurities. Is it likely they read this? No. But if we stoop to that level, we are saying that this is normal and okay, and it becomes commonplace. Saying mean things just because you’re anonymous on a computer should never be okay.
I hope that before you type, you will sit back and ask yourself, If my child, or my boss, or my whatever read what I am typing, would I feel ashamed? Then if the answer is yes- keep it to yourself. Sorry, don’t mean to rant GTT…. this is a sensitive issue for me.

      • Tortuga Says:

@allie It’s a sensitive subject for me as well. Unfortunately my own mother has said things about my weight before, and my step-father. Which has made me very self conscious (even being in my 20s) Now I’m stuck in the gym and restricting myself for life. I’m happy I’m healthier but I wish I didn’t have image issues. No matter how thin I get I’ll never feel good enough in today’s society. If it was my own daughter I would approach things differently if I thought my daughter needed help with her weight.

      • Sara Says:

I agree with you allie. And I’m sure Aly knows her body, and is aware of changes to her body. I think it would be unrealistic to assume that she would have stayed at the same weight as she did when she was in the gym so much. There isn’t really a need to talk about it, especially about someone who is still a teen.

  15. icemeltsfast Says:

looks like I’m late to this party– I’m happy to hear you’re unscathed, GTT. =)

  16. sportsfan Says:

Glad to hear you are safe, GTT. It was surreal to watch this stuff unfold and not being anywhere near to help people. Whoever did this, foreign or domestic terrorist, I hope they get what is coming to them. Truly sad and horrifying.

  17. JAS4 Says:

    Glad you are safe!

  18. mimi Says:

also glad you’re okay GTT. it’s been all over the australian news all day. very saddened and shocked for bostonites/americans/victims of all nationalities and backgrounds who were there, it really is just awful. why cant the world just get along instead of acting with violence?😦

  19. H Says:

    Glad you are safe GTT!
Hopefully they will find out who did this.

  20. sanitynmotion Says:

I don’t think GymMom saying “Aly has gained weight” is criticizing her – it’s just a fact. I would think all gymnasts would have to gain some weight after stopping their competitive elite schedule! Otherwise that would be nuts. And look at the conversation it stimulated from everyone here.

I would have to agree yep, Aly gained weight after not training 7 hours a day/ 6 days a week in competitive gymnastics. Ballroom dancing is entirely different. And you know what? I think it looks good on her! She’s got boobs, she’s got a butt, she’s got thighs! She looks like a normal person/woman now, not a gymnast. I think she’s actually very pretty – prettier than Shawn Johnson.

And GymMom never said she looked chunky or big – just she gained weight. That’s expected. I would think Aly probably is having issues dealing with it – she’s been a string bean all her life and the body has “instant” ways of catching up with you when you’ve held it back – but I think she’ll grow to embrace the new curves if she hasn’t done so already. She’s wearing looser clothing (a la Shawn Johnson) but I’ve also seen her wearing very nice flattering dresses as well:

Oh – and the Whitney girl Aly danced with is ALSO a So You Think You Can Dance alum and was BFF with Lyndsey Arnold. Yay! (I love SYTYCD)….

    • Gymbee Says:

I think Aly looks great now actually. She has a really fit woman’s body.

    • Tortuga Says:

No, Gym Mom wasn’t really rude about Aly. More of an observation, but we all saw how she talked about Shawn with her weight gain. I hope she won’t feel that way towards Aly later.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

She won’t – I think GymMom has an uncommon bias when it comes to Shawn Johnson – there’s something there we probably don’t know about.

I think she genuinely likes Aly. I mean, who can hate on Aly anyways? I can see when people don’t like her style of gymnastics but Aly as a person is very relate-able and genuinely likable.

      • GymMom Says:

Part of my observation about Aly’s weight gain was informative. Most of the “beauty” & personal care products we use contain parabens….that mimic hormones. Parabens are preservatives that give products a longer shelf life. The obesity crisis in this country is hard to ignore. In order to address it, we should educate ourselves.

People talk about the dangers of tanning beds, but the truth is, the spray tans are probably more dangerous. So is most of the make-up women use.

Also the food we eat is full of ant-biotics, pesticides, growth hormones, & toxic high fructose corn syrup, which all contribute to weight gain, even when eaten moderately.

I’ve researched this for many years.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree GymMom. The food we eat today I would believe directly correlates to a shorter life span in general as well. My nana’s generation (born in the early 1900s/1920s) will likely generally live to be older than our current generation (despite technological advances) because they didn’t eat like we do now. In 50+ years it will be harder to come by “90-year-old” people, is my guesstimate. They will all have died of cancer of some sort. Even where I live there’s some weird stat about women and breast cancer. Our environment is filled with toxins. Who knows what it is about where I live but it’s something like 1 in 5 women get breast cancer. I know sucks right?

Our society today is all about convenience. Go to the store and pick up whatever it takes to make a meal/eat it in less than half an hour. There are also fewer farmers able to feed/support the needs of more and more people (a growing population) – all due to tech advances and the use of growth hormones/pesticides/toxins, etc. We have all of these “associations” for regulation yet our food is essentially less healthy to consume than ever. There are so many “hidden” things we don’t even think or know about. We think we are eating lean protein but really it’s filled to the gills with hormones and what not. The whole thing scares me but what can I do about it? I’m not going to start a farm in my own (non-existent) backyard. And sadly if I did someone from the Food and Drug Administration or what not would come shut me down for fear everyone else would do the same thing, haha. Farmer’s have a big iron fist in that government of ours (lobbyists), if anyone hasn’t noticed.

I heard some of this is touched on in Food, Inc. but I know if I watch that movie I will never want to eat meat again and my husband would not be a fan of that.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I read somewhere — and this is no joke — that morticians have noticed that human bodies are no longer decaying as quickly than they used to, and scientists believe it is because of all the preservatives in the food we eat. Now that is scary.

I’ve been convinced for a long time that the earlier and earlier puberty we are seeing nowadays has a lot to do with all these hormones we are injesting in our bodies, whether through the hormone fed animals/vegetables we eat or directly through makeup, lotions, etc. I know lack of exercise and childhood obesity is a cause (which itself is related to all the hormone fed food we eat) but I think the hormones are a direct cause too. They’ve recently discovered that boys are going through puberyy earlier too, no just girls.

      • Gymbee Says:

Omg how scary! I’ve been avoiding parabens for some years now, after I read how harmful they are. I read a study saying many of the breast tumors found on women, when studied actually were found to contain parabens. Drs linked it to the parabens in deodorants.
I also read a study saying pregnant women who used a lot of products with parabens, their sons were born with damaged genitalia, because of the hormones!

I actually have an app on my phone that I can scan barcodes with, and it tells you immediately whether there are parabens or any harmful chemicals in the ingredients. Very handy!

      • terrigymfan Says:

But you know Gymbee they’ve found that use of that app puts out radiation that causes cancer. Just kidding.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Terri haven’t seen you in a while.🙂 It’s nice to have you back.🙂

      • Gymbee Says:

Hahaha terri🙂 Welcome back🙂 I guess these days it’s like an obstacle course to avoid harmful stuff. I bet my phone sends out harmful rays everytime I use the damn app, frying my brain lol.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Thanks Sanity and Gymbee. Just been very busy at work lately and at home too.

  21. GymMom Says:

Shawn pathetically bragging about her Nike gear AGAIN! She failed with the Hollywood personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins, who I’ve read is one of the best in the business.

Now Shawn is doing some kind of “boot camp” at Farrells in West Des Moines with her parents. She started that about a month ago. If I were her, I would keep the details to myself & post photos of myself AFTER the fact, giving credit to Farrells or whoever helped her.

I doubt Nike appreciates her posting photos of their products with nothing to show for it. People can see photos of their products anywhere. Shawn is making a mockery of Nike, Jeannette Jenkins & others.

Oh & the shameless blatant efforts to get the attention of her ex-boyfriend are unbelieveable! What girl would get a hunting dog?

    • Gymbee Says:

I don’t know – I actually got some Nike shoes that Shawn posted and I really liked them. The only place I saw them was on her instagram. I took a screenshot and went into a local Nike store and asked for them🙂 I doubt I’m the only one.
I never go on the Nike website to check out stuff, but I check instagram everyday.

I saw plenty of comments under the photo that read like “cool leggings, where can I get them” etc.

    • Gymbee Says:

What’s wrong with a girl having a hunting dog? Plenty of my friends have “hunting” dogs, but don’t hunt with them. Is that not normal in the US?
I guess in Europe we don’t really have “boy/girl” dogs. You’d see a guy with a King Charles Cavalier and a girl with a staff bull.

      • GymMom Says:

Nothing wrong with anyone owning a hunting dog, but its obvious Shawn is trying to get her ex’s attention. One of his buddies responded but not him.

The guy is a loser in my opinion. At first I thought Shawn didn’t want anyone to know who her boyfriend was, but it became obvious he was the one acting shady. Even though she is annoying, I sort of feel sorry for her hanging on to feelings that aren’t reciprocated.

      • Gymbee Says:

Ah, if that’s the case it’s a wee bit pathetic. Imagine how little she thinks of herself if she really needs to use a puppy to get a guys attention😦

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The girl is beautiful. She could find a guy.

      • Gymbee Says:

Yeah she is! She has that “girl next door” pretty look. Anyway.

    • Kt Says:

I’m only replying her becaus my iPhone makes it weird and I can’t always direct reply on other things. I love aly and I always have ever since she debuted at scam in 09?

About the paraben, I will agree parabens are bad!! Really bad. And most parabens found in make up come from the cheap stuff.. And considering she probably gets her makeup done by professionals you know she’s using the good stuff!

I will say her spray tan is just to much for me. My professor tells me all the time how bad sun is for you. I always notice when someone looks overly tan.

On the weight gain. Yes when watching dwts I did notice she seemed like she gained weight but I also saw her a few weeks prior at the scam signing and she looked beautiful.

In high school I did xc, track, I love being competitive and after high school ended it was my first break from running. I knew after this no more real competition running. After a year in college I exploded. My mom even said yeah I just thought it was because I stopped running and everyone says u gain weight in college. I still am trying to lose most of the weight. I honestly don’t care about being skinny, I just want to feel comfortable and happy with what I eat.

I’m college I’m striding sport movement science and want to be a physical education teacher.
I have people go up to me at work asking what I’m studying and after I say that there like “…oh.. That’s nice”
No I don’t want to be a gym teacher. I want to educate children and teach them how to move and the inportance of nuitrition and dining am enjoyment in phyiscal activity. I don’t to build future sport stars, just fight the work wide weight issue where it starts. I think we should keep social media out of the obesity crisis and treat physical educators as more that jocks and coaches and see his important the role of a p. e teacher is.
I feel like most in my field want to educate the whole child. Physically, emotionally, and cognitively. Having a healthy and safe environment for kids to express and find enjoyment is what can better combat and hange the unhealthy life style we live.

I know being 135 and fit and able to exercise without your heart heart going sky high is better that being 105 but exhausted walking up the stairs.

I think aly should be proud if her accomplishments and she can show people although she is not tone and overly fit she is happy and feels as pretty as her.
Same for Shawn, I know she’s not your favorite person, and while I’m lurking on here i absolutely agree with some of your points in her and her personality I don’t think her gain in weight bothers me. She’s still putting in a for effort. She runs probably everyday, and although she’s not the most fit Nike sponsor she’s a good rep for the normal people who want to be able to say yeah I run 3 miles everyday at a so and so pace. In proud I’m out there running, it will lead to me living a longer healthier life.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I think it takes someone like a gymnast at least a year after retirement (or a break) to figure out how to treat their bodies/what to eat/etc. in order to maintain a healthy/normal weight. Their bodies need that time to adjust as well. Going from excessive training to more moderate/typical training is a huge change. I was a swimmer/water polo player and I worked out at least 5 hours a day, 5 days a week all throughout high school doing 2-a-day practices. I then went to college and what was 5 hours a day became 1-2 hours a day, maybe 5 days a week. It took me about a couple months before realizing if I wanted to keep wearing my normal clothes I’d have to watch what I eat. My jeans were getting too tight! So I stopped eating whatever I wanted.
Even now I am lucky to get in 4 workouts a week, and all of the trainers I know say it’s more about what you eat – 80% food, 20% exercise. I used to say “I work out so I can eat” but now I know that’s really not the case, unfortunately!

In any event, even ASac right after her first retirement blew up right away. Then she slimmed down when she did her comeback, but has managed to limit the “weight gain” since retiring a second time and I think that has a lot to do with her knowledge of nutrition. She was seeing a nutritionist during her comeback so I think with that knowledge she has been able to keep the weight off. Shawn Johnson took some time too – we all saw how she gained a lot of weight and then shed it off slowly. It’s all about getting used to your body’s reactions to the major lifestyle change. Not only are these girls former gymnasts (so had absolutely no body fat) but they are short – so when they stop competing and training at that caliber, the weight comes on fast and it looks a lot worse (especially on TV) than it really is.

I applaud your efforts to be a good PE teacher, by the way. All of mine growing up were absolute jokes. It was known as the “easy” course to teach because all it was was taking roll call and then dismissing us to either walk the field or play basketball on the asphalt. Then take roll call again at the end of the hour and let the kids change back in school clothes. I think now that most kids are fat or obese it’s only now becoming a pressing issue to teach health/fitness to the younger generations. Sadly though most fat kids have fat parents. It starts at the home. So it’s almost like the parents are in need of the proper teaching/guidelines too, because they have full control over what their kids eat at that age.

It’s shocking and sad what an epidemic obesity is here. I think for the most part Americans are choosing to adopt more lazier lifestyles so they can fulfill more of their time in front of screens (iPads/iPhones etc., TV, computers)…they eat food that is convenient to save time and convenient foods are typically worse for you. Then you have the issue of work lifestyles being all sitting in front of a screen. We probably spend on average 15 hours a day sitting. It’s sad.

      • Kt Says:

Yes I agree, it’s sad that the unhealthy habit come from home. That’s ehy to me it’s important to important to get the family involved and maybe even have children encourage parents to walk after dinners, or before school go to the park or bike ride as a family!

I agree most of my former pe teachers gave us equipment and told us to do what ever we want with it.

  22. GymMom Says:

By the way, the Saudi national is not a suspect in the Boston bombings.

  23. Biyatch Says:

Apparently had Aly not been at dwts she had been invited to grand marshall the marathon yesterday. i think i would have been a bit shaken thinking about that if i was her.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Tom is from here. I have loved him for years. I wish I could see his speech.

      • GymMom Says:

GTT, you know how he is such a jokester? Last night he opened DWTS with sincere comments about what happened in Boston. Several more times during the show he talked about how much Boston means to him. It was obvious he was shaken. I don’t think he told one joke last night.

Also, Craig Ferguson did not do a monologue of jokes last night. He talked about how much Boston means to him. He became a US citizen there in 2008 & gave a speech there. He also filmed a special show there. He asked Larry King(not scheduled) to appear on the show last night & they had a serious discussion.

Conan also calls Boston home & he spoke about how much it means to him. Leno & Letterman were repeats.

My Dad was at the Red Sox game yesterday like he is every Patriots Day since he retired from running Boston a few years ago.

He has a jigsaw puzzle that shows him running Boston. It was a photo from Runners World that was used to create the puzzle.

I have many memories of my Dad running Boston through the years. One of the highlights for the runners are the “Wellesley girls” supporting them.

I have 1 or 2 jackets from Boston that all the finishers receive at the finish line. He kept a few but gave the rest to me & my 4 sisters.

I am trying to keep those good memories in mind today.

GTT still trying to find DWTS opening with Tom’s speech.

        Thanks Gymmom.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah it makes me pissed too. I have to wonder with all the security how the heck this happened. And there are no trails now. I can’t help but think they are covering something up. That’s usually the case.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They know something they aren’t telling us and I don’t think it is so much covering things up as keeping things quiet til they catch who did it.

Some Boston College students organized a walk of the last 5 miles of the Boston Marathon route on Friday. Their campus is located at the 21 mile point. They are honoring those who died, who were injured & those 5,000 people who didn’t get to finish the race. There are 12,000 people signed up to do this via their facebook page. I applaud this effort & B.C.

Most of the people who follow Shawn on Twittter & Instagram probably can’t afford $160 sneakers & $100 running tights among other Nike products.

And I will go back to what I’ve stated earlier regarding Shawn having access to the best work out gear, personal trainers, dietary support & resources to eat the best organic food out there. Yet, she is unable to succeed at stabilizing her weight. What about that is inspiring? Most of us struggle with our weight and in my case, its been related to my age/menopause. What is her excuse?

If Shawn doesn’t want judgement, then don’t write books, don’t do reality tv(DWTS), seek out the spotlight & put all your business out for public scrutiny in a braggart sort of manner.

Look at Lo Lo Jones. She hasn’t won a medal but she has sponsors and she worked hard to get a spot on the US Olympic Bobsled Team for 2014. She’s still running and will compete in the Drake Relays.

I respect Lo Lo immensely & if you know her story, you know how difficult her childhood was. She has no excuses & does not brag on Twitter. Humbleness goes a long way!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I really like Lo Lo Jones – although she got some bad rap in the past for being profiled/gaining spotlight over her looks because whoever it was that beat her at Worlds (yes, another American) wasn’t in the spotlight as much because she lacked in the look factor.

I guess I can’t blame Lo Lo for getting the profile since looks go a long way, especially for sponsors. We all know that.

I see your point that Shawn should “look” the fitness model since she has all of the resources there. She has time (no job, and I guess the whole college thing was a happenstance whim) and the Nike clothing and trainers. And she could have the food/meals delivered to her. It also doesn’t make sense because she’s an athlete and had that “fitness model” look when she was training for gymnastics, so there’s a muscle memory thing she has going for her. I hate to criticize her for weight but I get your point.

One of my pet peeves is when a celebrity is given so much credit and esteem for losing a ton of weight, or having a perfect body. Some examples: Jessica Simpson (losing weight post baby #1/pre baby #2), Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera…I can go on, but you know what I mean. Like why should we be idolizing them for losing weight or looking great in general? It’s THEIR JOB to look smashing. They can literally spend most of their day working on their looks: getting meals delivered, working with a personal trainer, having their entourage give them skin/makeup treatments or whatever. I get so disgusted when celebrities get so much adoration for “losing weight post-baby” because it’s like F*CK THEY HIRE TWO NANNIES PER BABY, any dimwit with that amount of cash/resources could look that good after giving birth!

And Weight Watchers: give me $5 million and I’ll lose 20 pounds, FO SHO. Even if I didn’t have 20 pounds to lose I’d find it! Sh*t I’d starve my ass for $5 million (this is what they gave Jessica Simpson BTW to promote their product). Then she goes off and impregnates herself again and I think doesn’t get the full amount because of that – because she couldn’t get full results before knocking herself up again. That Dimwit. Close your legs for a few more months and get $5 million easy cash.

I’m bitter because it’s past midnight and I’m still working and I will never see $5 million in my lifetime for analyzing financials, much less getting on a stupid treadmill and having my meals delivered to me for free.

      • Tortuga Says:

Hahaha, you’re so right about giving celebrities praise over losing weight or looking beautiful. Even on the Biggest Loser. Don’t get me wrong they need to lose weight and should be proud of themselves for doing so but they’re not having to work while on the show. They have all day to work out and focus on their goals. Plus they have great chefs making all their meals for them. I wish I could pay to be put in a program like that for moderately fit people! The really impressive stories are of those that have to juggle school, work or kids. The daily grind of errands what have you, and still manage to fit in a great workout routine and a healthy diet. Not an easy feat.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Exactly. Funny you should mention that because this last season of The Biggest Loser was the fist I’ve ever watched. I get that it’s hard to lose the weight but a lot of them like to complain while working out and then they get all whiny when it comes to the weigh-in and things like that. I do get impressed by what they are able to accomplish but at the same time I’m with you – they work out 6 hours a day and have their food intake appropriately monitored. Of course they will lose the weight! Although a lot of it – when it comes to being that obese – is mental, too. So in addition to that they get psychological help and daily therapy. So that’s why in the end they all of a sudden “love themselves” because they also have to get over the mental downfalls, which caused them to get that big in the first place.

I find the most impressive role models to be exactly as you said – those people that don’t have the money for the nannies and the special diets and also have full-time jobs and kids to boot, yet still find a way to lose the weight or be really fit. Most people that I know that are fit like that with kids it’s either because they are stay-at-home moms with lots of help or their jobs are fitness-related. I still to this day would love to read the book on how to have that “fit body” while balancing kids and a full-time job! You’d need a very supportive husband as well I’d imagine.

GTT I knew Tom was from Massachusetts but I didn’t know all of this.

Tom Bergeron was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts. His first job in broadcasting was as a disc jockey at local radio station WHAV, in his home town of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He became a popular radio DJ in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire in the early 1980s on Portsmouth’s WHEB, where he played comedy records along with music and offbeat interviews. His popularity led to additional TV and radio auditions.

One of his first jobs on television was as host of a local game show, Granite State Challenge, on New Hampshire Public Television (produced at NHPTV flagship station WENH-TV). He moved to the Boston market in February 1982, joining WBZ-TV as a general on-air personality. His early roles at the station included being a contributor on Evening Magazine (1982–87), and hosting brief informational and show preview segments known as 4 Today, every 30 minutes during WBZ’s daytime lineup (1983–87). In 1984, he landed the hosting spot on Lottery Live, the nightly drawings of the Massachusetts State Lottery games. By January 1987, while still working in these roles, Bergeron added People Are Talking to his duties. He replaced outgoing host Buzz Luttrell on the early afternoon talk show, where he gained even more popularity. While Ron Cantera took over as host of 4 Today (until its cancellation in 1988), Bergeron remained lottery host until drawings moved to WNEV-TV in September 1987.[1][2]

By the early 1990s, Bergeron was seen as a solid figure in Boston television, and WBZ continued to capitalize on his talents by featuring him on WBZ Radio. It was there he had an early-morning radio show called The Tom Bergeron Show. When People Are Talking ended a successful 13-year run in June 1993, Bergeron remained on WBZ-TV as commentator and lifestyle reporter for the station’s expanded hour-long noon newscast. In early 1994, Bergeron briefly surfaced as a morning host on Boston’s soft-rock station WMJX (“Magic 106.7”), which was only a short commute to WBZ’s studios for his work on the noon news.

Why are none of the national news media talking about the Mobile Alabama Cross Country coach who was interviewed by his local tv station? He said many runners were concerned at the starting line because of the presence of bomb sniffing dogs, a strong police presence & snipers with weapons seen on rooftops along the race route?

This coach who has run many marathons including Boston said this was NOT seen before. Why bomb sniffing dogs at the finish line?

How about the looting of the souvenir jackets for the runners who never got to finish? I watched video of that today too.

And nobody saw someone carry a LARGE black bag and place it in a trash can at the finish line??? The bomb sniffing dogs never reacted to the explosives in the bags in the trash cans?

There are usually security sweeps which include looking into trash cans more than once.

What were the snipers on the roofs doing?

What about the bogus story on NBC about some runners finishing the race & running to the hospitals to donate blood? WTF!!!
There were no runners crossing the finish line after the bombs went off because they shut it down immediately. But our President repeated the bogus story!

Yes, there are alot of things the news media is not reporting.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Allegedly they were doing bomb training which IMO makes no sense but they have said this all along and they announced it at the marathon.

Bomb threats happen all the time and nothing comes of it so I can’t really blame them for not calling this off but they didn’t have anyone under the bleachers keeping watch ? That sounds dumb to me.

    • Catherine Says:

There is an ama on reddit of somebody who witnessed the bombs and helped in coordinating relief etc. That person confirmed that runners did go to the hospital to donate blood. They also said that the finishing line had its route altered after so people would have crossed ‘a’ finishing line.

      • GymMom Says:

The race was definitely shut down after the bombs went off. There was rerouting of runners at Newton related to other possible bomb threats on the race route & police tape was put up.

Apparently there was no explanation given at the time the race was shut down. Runnners were bussed to another location to theoretically reunited with their friends & family.

There is alot of training & preparation to run Boston, including having to qualify. I hope all the runners who weren’t able to finish are automatically qualified to run next year.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I can understand why bomb sniffing dogs can’t sniff through metal or whatever – stainless steel. Not sure why nobody would notice a large black bag being placed in a trash can – especially when there were like you said plenty of cops around supposedly sniffing that stuff out.

I do not understand why the national news media would not report something like that other than to say something is going on that our government does not want us to know. I bet you there was a threat of some sort and it wasn’t adequately responded to. I’m sure some people are even suggesting that the government staged this to promote some sort of agenda but I really don’t want to consider living in that type of world.

I’ll just assume incompetence since that’s usually the case.

      • GymMom Says:

I’m with you on all points! I choose not to live in fear but I definitely don’t trust the government or news media.

Here’s something we probably will never see again? The Yankees played “Sweet Caroline” to pay homage to Boston during tonight’s game.–mlb.html

    • gymtruthteller Says:

They look bored to tears and uninterested in doing this.

Classy move by the Yankees but the fans are a whole different story

    • gymtruthteller Says:

The fans in Atlanta burst into sweet caroline all on their own according to an article I just read yet that barely gets a mention.

Sorry but the media is making this about them when the fact is a lot of the teams did something.

Oakland chanted Lets go Boston. Plus the Braves. I just wish everyone got credit for what they did and not just the chosen media darlings.

My boyfriend and I were starting to make going to the marathon a thing we do, we went last year in 90 degree weather and loved it so we figured this time around we would have so much fun. We were also both track xc runners in high school so we love running as it is! We were standing near the flags watching runners finish. Ofcourse bc the t sucks and took forever to get in we missed most elite runners. Aster about 2:45 or so I ask my boyfriend if he wanted to go to the shops I wanted to go to. We went into 2 and bought stuff and were hungry and went to get lunch. We went into a restaurant as I walked in I remember saying “we can watch the end of the sox game” before I realized it literally just ended. We sat near a window, it was quite chilly and I remember wishing someone else would complain so I can be warm. Luckily someone did so management came and closed it! When out meal came. I had no more than 2-3 bites before I heard a loud explosion. It was so silent in the restaurant I thought the power went out. Until I realized all the lights were on. Ten seconds later we all heard it again. So we knew something was up. We were in a booth seat next to the window so I spun around and looked out the window. You can see a huge puff of smoke coming towards boyleston. As everyone noticed the smoke I looked out towards the side walks and signaled my boyfriend to look. Hundreds of people were running towards us away from the marathon. As I said people are running like crazy everyone (and I mean everyone) gathered around our table. We all had no clue what happened. We didnt know if we should leave or what. I peaked down since I was on the upper floor of the resturant and all the out door guest were gone. It was so crazy. I was no more than half a foot ball field away. And I was in the very location no more than an hour before!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Oh, wow. That’s truly scary, knowing your timing was just one hour off of being a part of that explosion.

      • Kt Says:

Yes! Very scary! We didn’t even know how to get out of the city because we took the train. Walked around the commons for awhile since it was in the open which is alot better that being some where people can hide explosives.
After an hour we decided to walk from boyleston to north station. It actually was not as far as we thought. After 30 minutes we were home!! Only to have school the next day. People are already acting as if it wasn’t a big deal
