Shawn Johnson and weight

I have no problem with discussing weight issues of a gymnast at this blog. You can pretty much discuss anything that won’t make me bring out the disclaimer blog again.

I don’t think we should be calling anyone names like fat cow but pointing out that a gymnast has gained weight and discussing it between ourselves is allowed. I would prefer we not call someone names about their weight gain but if that is the way you decide to go that is your decision. Just be prepared that people are not going to stand for it.

EVERYONE has dealt with gaining weight before. It is a part of life.

(This is a really bad outfit for Shawn. No one should wear something like this)

In specifics to Shawn yes she has gained some weight but she is hardly fat. She is pretty tiny and even ten pounds on her looks like she has gained twenty. Her legs look bigger.

Someone in the comments section mentioned that Shawn needs to wear longer dresses and I agree with that. Her problem area is her legs and a longer dress with maybe heals would do wonders for her look. Lest face it, no one that isn’t skinny is going to look good in those dresses they wear on Dancing with the stars.

Here is what Shawn thought a few months ago. I am the last person to lecture anyone on thinking before they speak but, think before you speak:) (Unless you don’t want too:)

I think it’s okay to say ‘Shawn’s gained weight, hope’s she’s staying healthy and happy’ or whatever, but I don’t like the continous commentary about it. She looks fit, healthy, glowing..end of discussion in my opinion. Oh no she’s not striving to be what 7 stone (I’m bad at judging for height) anymore..but that’s a good thing.

On a side note, I agree with the general sentiment that she’s a much better dancer this time around. She’s been very media whoring the last while and I wish she’d lay off the tan but something about her personality means it’s very difficult to NOT like her. I still love her. She has what it takes to hang around even longer I think. Nastia who?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

That is why I vote every week:) A vote for Shawn is a vote against Nastia.

    • Guest Says:

Hah Hah, GTT I think so. But it is sad that we can’t stop Nastia keeping media-whoring in the gymnastics world especially next year’s American Cup, Nationals, World Championships next year by using the convenience of “PIG athlete representative”.

  2. Kylie Says:

mmm I personally think she looks fantastic! But then again I’m not from teh US so her ‘smaller image’ hasn’t been shown in my face lots.

  3. AKF009 (@AKF009) Says:

Aside from this issue, I just read Lexie Priessman has commited to Georgia??? I’m really confused about this? Is this after the 2016 olympics?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Wofford was even younger when she committed to Oklahoma. They just can’t sign until they are in College so they can change their minds.

Lexie is a first year gymnastics senior in 2013 so she won’t be going to Georgia for 4 years.

  4. Dee Says:

I think Shawn is adorable, but I occasionally feel bad for her that even when she gains weight, she still has to wear these outfits that just draw even more attention to it. however, i think she is a good role model for young girls because she is in shape and healthy and is not stick skinny…And i think it is good for people to see someone in shape and not extremely skinny. While her body type isn’t the type that I prefer to watch do gymnastics, I still think she looks pretty good. It would be hard to be as short as her and try to have that long and lean look.

  5. GymMom Says:

That outfit she wore on Ellen is beyond hideous! I believe they’re called palazzo pants & only tall, thin girls should wear them? Shawn bugs me immensely! When she talks, she talks through her teeth while barely moving her mouth. If she was a 20 year old college student, I would not care but she puts herself out there looking awful & sounding worse than awful! Appearing on tv, she should realize the camera adds pounds. And by the way, next to Gabby’s mother, Shawn looks anorexic! LOL!

  6. GymMom Says:

I also feel that when she wrote that blog she KNEW there was no way she was going to the 2012 Olympics, which means she was probably disingenuous throughout.

  7. Guest Says:

Comparing her shape in the final weeks of DWTS season 8 and the appearences after DWTS, I think Shawn is very fit now. She cannot be said skinny as a model but looks healthy and vital.

  8. JAS4 Says:

I think she looks healthy now but I do agree that she could wear clothes more flattering to her body type

  9. brainy Says:

Off topic — Here’s a Q&A w/Marta K. about Chow’s Gymnastics & Dance: . Anyone know anything about these 2-3 new juniors being developed at Chow’s? Names or any results?

  10. Catherine Says:

Lexie Priessman has verbally committed to Georgia. There seems to be outrage that a) it’s not UCLA and b) that she’s not a college gymnast. Personally, she screams NCAA to me, more than any other upcoming senior. Still if she stays healthy she might swing towards pro. Anyway, I don’t really follow NCAA but I gather Georgia suck since the glory days of Kupets. Still, she might give them the status to have more high standard recruits and lead a revival..maybe? Anyway, I’d imagine location and the standard of whatever she wants to study is equally as important as the gymnastics programme, so if she’s happy with her choice..

    • Catherine Says:

Wow I missed this 5 comments up!

    • mim Says:

ooh, why are people mad that it isn’t UCLA? im not overly familiar with the whole “committing to a college” process, but she’s so young.. how does she seriously know what she wants to do and where she wants to study in 4 years? can she change her mind before then? i know i had a fairly big “mind-change” from years 11 to 12 when i did my university applications, and even throughout my degrees i wasn’t entirely sure what i wanted to do!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She can change her mind until she signs her senior year. Not sure why everyone loves UCLA so much I find them annoying as hell.

  11. GymMom Says:

This should vindicate Excalibur to some degree?

Martha: Gabby has always been an extremely talented child, even beginning with the TOPs progam. She definitely flourished under Chow’s tutelage. She had good physical abilities and excellent basic training and Chow was able to take it to the next level.

I praise Gabby for changing her working style and behavior under the guidance of her new coach and being able to stay focused and pay attention to everyday details in order to be successful when the moment came. I just really want to praise Gabby – what a great transformation she went through and how she became a gymnast who was able to focus on the task she had to accomplish.

  12. GymMom Says:

Although I still feel Gabby was over-scored aka “hand-picked to win AA in London.”

    • Lissa Says:

The judges handed Gabby the Olympic AA. She was a definite contender by herself, but those bars and beam scores were a blatant gift. Komova would have won with unbiased scoring.

  13. GymMom Says:

Is it possible that when Gabby was shopping around for a new gym after leaving Excalibur, Marta directed Valeri to turn her down which is when Marta sent her to Iowa? Chow has produced 2 Olympic Champions…courtesy of Marta’s “influence?” I’m not saying Chow isn’t a good coach…BUT??? Is it possible Marta is completely pulling the strings..meaning even Chow’s strings? The interview with Marta is her first shot across the bow? She’s already greasing the wheels for 2016, so to speak. She is setting things in motion….so everyone will more easily buy into her picks for 2016??

    • Catherine Says:

The impression I got from all the articles was that Liukin himself is not happy to take transfers like that. He has control over who he takes and who he doesn’t, I highly doubt Marta can override his own internal gym decisions. Also, how much of a big deal was Gabby at that stage? She didn’t become a big deal until SCAM, even at worlds she was far behind Aly, Alicia, McKayla and Jordyn in terms of attention.

Although Valeri did take Bross, who was originally at Geddert’s. He seems to not want to piss off other coaches at all, so maybe amicable moves especially when still a junior are his cup of tea. Gabby’s move was about as un-amicable as you can get and that’s probably why he refused. He may also have heard about the debt.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Probably had more to do with the money than Gabby’s talent…Valerie seems the type to really garner in those who “can pay” over the talent if you know what I mean (plus he probably figured at that point he would be dealing with one, maybe two Olympians with Bross and his daughter). And who knows, maybe Gabby hadn’t lined up anyone to live with yet in Texas, but by the time Chow was approached she had the Partons or whoever they were to claim they would pay for Gabby’s expenses?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Or maybe he did not want to deal with her mother. I am sure everyone knew about her. I’ll give Valeri credit for that. Same with Atler. He did not want the headache.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah – the mom is a total user stereotype. No talent is worth that. Even Chow doesn’t have much to do with Gabby recently…

      • mim Says:

i think chow is purposefully trying to distance himself from gabby. that’s my impression anyway.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Why do you think that? I haven’t noticed. Maybe he knows what we all know and Gabby refuses to admit, she is done with gymnastics.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I read in an interview somewhere – someone was asking Chow what he thought about Gabby’s comments (the whole Oprah interview) and he said something to the likes of “I have nothing to do with what Gabby says outside the gym.” He just wanted to steer clear of that one, and I don’t blame him. Of course he was very diplomatic about it all though.

Just seeing what he did with Gabby makes me really appreciate his coaching though. He really did bring her potential out, brat that she is…

  14. GymMom Says:

I remember after the 2008 Olympics, there was talk of getting rid of the Karolyis following allegations from Emelia Eberle(they forced her to change her name when she was still competing)? Her allegations were backed by other former gymnasts & others but USAG still continues to stand behind them? It’s all “smoke & mirrors” which can be seen in the current Kellogg’s Tour. I honestly believe the Karolyis not only choose the USA teams…they influence who wins medals at the Olympics & other competitions. I also believe Bela’s “big scene” about the line-ups which hurt Jordyn in London was a huge act! It also made Gabby seem more like an underdog and garnered her more sympathy from the general public. Also, Bela was hired to do the job Marta is doing but he was removed and Marta replaced him in 2001. It’s obvious he is still the point of his “removal” was to show Marta in a more positive light?

    • Catherine Says:

For every gymnast who speaks out against the Karolyi’s, others rubbish the accusations and defend their own coaching. Eberle is now known as Trudi Kollar, but her first name IS Gertrude. Married name Kollar. It seems to be quite common to compete with a first name and middle name for Romanians, maybe she preferred Emilia at the time?

She was quite clearly starved, I think she’s the thinnest elite senior I’ve ever seen. Nadia has said they were being given pills. However I’m not sure how much you can judge the Karolyi’s actions until a Communist system. Particularly as they were not alone- at the exact same time as Emilia was in her prime, Elena Mukhina was being forced to compete incredible difficulty after being booted out of the hospital with an unhealed broken leg. Medals or disgrace in both systems.

What’s WAY more telling about the Karolyi’s is how they acted in 90’s USA free of any kind of overshadowing by a dictatorial system. I believe Strug at least has rubbished Moceanu’s claims, not sure about Zmeskal and Okino? Must read up on that again.

      • mim Says:

i read something recently (i think an interview posted here not long ago) from a dom interview a couple of years ago, and she said something along the lines of kim zmeskal hating her for badmouthing the karolyis, or calling her a liar etc.. kim must have made some sort of statement defending them im guessing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kim was on the committee that denied Moceanu going to Nationals. I think she also said something But I don’t remember what.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Here you go. It’s from Sarah’s blog

      • gymtruthteller Says:

HA, Apparently I had an opinion before to because this popped up when looking for what

      • terrigymfan Says:

Zmeskal and Strug supports the Karolyis while of course Moceanu bashes them. Okino used to support the Karolyis but more recently has criticized them. Definitely gymnasts on both sides of the issue.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Kerri Strug has been diplomatic. She knows you don’t get to the top by being babied. Moceanu only has two examples of abuse and she can’t come up with anymore which emans she is full of shit

      • terrigymfan Says:

Moceanu’s claims of physical abuse by the Karolyis are exaggerated (she was mostly physically abused by her father). Her claims that the Karolyis were verbally abusive have more validity since a lot of other gymnasts have made similar claims. I understand Zmeskal’s position is that he did say those things but if you could not stand the heat you needed to get out of the kitchen. Her motives are suspect too though since she curries favor with the Karolyis. The one thing I absolutely agree with is it is all old news and Moceanu needs to quit milking it.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I don’t think Moceanu will ever quit milking it. As long as the Karolyis hold their power over gymnastics it helps her too because she can go out and spout these things and get attention for herself. She knows her “time” is nearing its end. As it stands she only “matters” every four years, and now that the 1996 “Mag 7” has been trumped by FF it’ll be even worse for her. I don’t really care about her though.

As for Zmeskal, she can’t say a bad thing about the Karolyis or she’ll get blackballed and all of a sudden her gymnasts won’t be making world or Olympic teams. She has a couple gymnasts now who are apparently aiming for Rio so she “has” to keep her mouth shut.

GTT I like your “bitch wife” phrase. lol.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Exactly. She has no choice and if she is smart she will stay quiet.

    • JAS4 Says:

Maybe Valeri didn’t accept her because he and Marta had planned for all of his attention to be on Nastia because they were anticipating her comeback. I think it’s possible that Bela’s comments about Jordyn were fake but I also wonder if maybe he wanted to set Jordyn up as the winner (or at least the USA front runner) but Marta vetoed it in favor of Gabby (since I get the impression she has always secretly ran the show even when he was in charge) and maybe he was mad at Marta for not agreeing with him so he spoke out in public to spite her lol

      • terrigymfan Says:

When Bela spoke out so strongly in favor of Jordyn at the Olympics (and implicitly against Gabby) it was about the first time ever I agreed with him and admired him. I also admired him for aggressively asking for the recalculation of the score that led to Aly’s bronze. It seemed like he took charge of that situation when the US coaches were standing around looking at each other wondering what to do. I’m hardly a fan but he went up a couple of notches with me during this Olympics.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You can’t trust Bela. He does things with hidden motives. He supported Shannon in 2000 before her injury and IMO that was all because he wanted a piece of her legacy. It kills his bitch wife that the US’s best gymnast was never trained by her. It must kill Bela

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yes. He probably did have some hidden motives for what he said about Jo at this year’s Olympics. I just know I agreed with what he said. He’s also more harmless now since he is old and in charge of nothing.

  15. GymMom Says:

I’m saying that the Karolyi’s were and are, the “dictators?”

    • catherine Says:

Ha I mean ceaucescu! I don’t think we have enough insight to really judge how awful or not they were, especially in the 90s when a communist system wasn’t an excuse. I think the fact that lots of gymnasts defend them is confusing to say the least to any portrayal of them as monsters. Right now I think they’re very controlling but I don’t think they have any influence over world and Olympic scores except for the inflation of internal scores building a gymnasts rep abroad.

  16. GymMom Says:

In the case of Emelia, she was blackballed from even coaching, which forced her to do factory work, prior to her defecting. In the case of US gymnasts, both past and present…the Karolyi’s may have the ability to affect their futures similarly? Their background before defecting involved brainwashing etc., so it may be in the gymnasts minds that speaking negatively/truthfully against the Karolyi’s will impact them negatively?

  17. GymMom Says:

Part of the review of the Kellogg’s Tour in Lubbock Texas….which is supposed to be “funny?” EWWWW GROSS!

“One male gymnast appeared dressed as a baby — complete with diaper, bonnet and pacifier — and attempted to ascend the parallel bars. After an assist from “Da Da,” he succeeded in his climb, pulled out a music box, frowned at the sounds of lullabies and Barney the Dinosaur, found an upbeat techno number and began dancing atop the bars.

After a few moments, the diaper was filled, the audience laughed, and the baby exited stage right.”

    • sanitynmotion Says:

So Nastia probably saw Mystere in Vegas and figured she’d add a similar element to the Kellogg’s tour show, lol.

  18. Guest Says:

    Week 3 performance of Shawn and Derek. 26.5/30 (9.0, 8.0, 9.5)

  19. GymMom Says:

This week the “stars” had to base their dance on a previous performance from DWTS. Shawn’s “quickstep” was based on this performance by Helio & Julianne Hough from 2007 which was amazing.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Julianna epitomizes sex appeal, great dancing, and flirtiness. Shawn not so much. Yeah I agree this was more of an acrobatic performance over anything else and should have been deducted appropriately for “breaking all the rules.”

  20. GymMom Says:

Shawn was showing off. Julianna is an unbelieveable dancer.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

And you notice how Julianna is too good for that show anymore. (She’s totally moved on to bigger and better things…I mean, dating Ryan Seacrest is no small feat in and of itself).

  21. GymMom Says:

These are real Nike Women. Shawn is not in their league anymore…time to face facts.!/nikewomen?v=photos&cps&album=a.435461379682.235137.6261664682&__user=688035890

  22. GymMom Says:

Move over Shawn..Gabby is signing autographs at Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Urbandale Iowa. Hy-Vee must be getting ready to give Shawn the heave-ho? LOL!

  23. LongtimeFan Says:

I am starting to think that GymMom is really Nastia! I have been following this blog since before the Olympics and I am really hoping I am allowed to post! I will be honest, I am a Shawn fan. And yes, I am from Des Moines. I am not gymnast and I do not know her or anyone who does know her (in case anyone is wondering).

Here are my thoughts, many of which have been posted by others:
    1) Marta never liked her body type. This is why Nastia won in 2008.
    2) Shawn had a second knee surgery after Pan Ams according to her book. I assume Marta knew she was hurt, even if hitting during camp and this is why she wasn’t on the World team. If it has been mentioned, I missed the post.
    3) Shawn attempted to heal her knee at the Michael Johnson training camp in early 2012. She hoped this would allow her to gain Martas trust and a spot on the team. Marta does not like injured veterans (ASac)
    4) Shawn knew she didn’t have a chance after that rehab. She starting talking about pieces of the puzzle during interviews, and her knee having both good and bad days. Also, she gave an interview to a local news channel which had it written all over her face. Only a few smiles which is not normal. I told my spouse then that she was done.
    5) Nastia mentioned at her first competition back that Shawn and her were at different points in their training and lives. (adding to my dislike of Nastia)
    6) why continue to damage her knee when she knew Nastia was the verteran of Marta’s choice.
    7) She had trained until she was 16. So let her “party” at U of I and have some normal teenage fun! I want my kids to enjoy their college years and then move on to be mature responsible adults! Everyone should enjoy their independence, responsibly of course.
    8) Yes, the world knows she is gaining weight. She is also in better shape then the majority of women even with a few added pounds compared to the size 0 Hollywood women that simply starve themselves.
    9) Who really would turn down the opportunities she has been given? Fame whore, maybe. But would you do the same? Many likely would if they are being honest.

Just my speculation on all. She may be a horrible person for all I know.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I just want you to know that I approved your comments because they weren’t attacking a member of this blog. Someone else might want to read the way you phrased things and go back and try again with another new name. (they tried like 10 times with different names and e-mail

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Thanks for the insight LongtimeFan. I didn’t know she had a second knee surgery AFTER Pan Ams. I’m glad your post got approved. 🙂 I was/am a huge Shawn fan but she seriously pissed me off when she told everyone she couldn’t wait to show off her new floor routine and then days later she retired. I’m still not entirely over that, but knowing she had that second knee surgery I better understand where she was coming from. I never doubted her comeback intention but I did doubt that she was really serious about it towards the end when she was getting all of the offers (DWTS and Bounty). I thought maybe she started shirking off training when a) she was getting all of those offers and b) she was realizing no matter what she could show she was capable of doing, Marta would not put her on that team.

I seriously wanted (SO BAD) for her to be on that team. I really did.

I agree she isn’t overweight at all. She has a different body style but she’s all muscle. She’s in better shape than I’ll ever be, that’s for sure.

Doubt GymMom is Nastia. I appreciate this blog because people CAN spout off their feelings, positive and negative. We all have our days. I think Gabby is a big thorn in GymMom’s side but I can’t blame her – like GTT though I try not to read it because literally her attitude and family make me sick.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I don’t have any problem with reading the different views expressed on this blog. What’s that expression, “One man’s meat is another man’s poison”? I am a big McKayla fan but I know other people find her annoying. I am like you though Sanity in that right now I ignore just about anything said or written about Gabby. She (and especially her mom) are annoying as hell and I just don’t want to read about it. But if someone wants to talk about her on this blog that’s fine with me because I am good at skipping over things. I did that in school all the time.

  24. GymMom Says:

Ok I finally stopped laughing long enough to respond to “Longtime Fan” about my identity. I believe it’s rather obvious that most of us are “slightly older” than 20 years old, isn’t it? LOL!

That’s all for now. By the way, I respect all opinions here, but calling me Nastia…well there’s a special place in hell for anyone who does that! LOL!

    • terrigymfan Says:

Last Thursday Nastia signed autographs for an hour or two in the building of the company where I work. I think you posted comments on this blog at the very time she was signing autographs. So you have an alibi GymMom! LOL

      • sanitynmotion Says:

And I saw a picture of it so I second that alibi!

Although I’d have to give Nastia some credit for coming up with a name like GymMom as a cover. Even better: GymDad. Somebody do it. lol.

      • terrigymfan Says:

GymDad? Maybe “GymMom” is actually Valerie! He wasn’t at the autograph session.

Just kidding GymMom. I don’t really think you are Valerie. Please don’t banish me to hell.

      • GymMom Says:

Oh thank God you provided an alibi for me! LOL!

  25. Lissa Says:

Shawn isn’t even remotely overweight. She’s just super short and has no curves. That means any of those DWTS outfits are not going to be body-flattering on her.

  26. macstabby Says:

I think Shawn looks great, honestly. I don’t know many women who have the exact same bodytype and weight that they had in high school. I sure don’t!
Okay, her quickstep wasn’t super impressive, but meh. I don’t actually watch that show anyways, so it’s all the same to me!
