I would love to see a good AA battle at Worlds next year between Mustafina and Kyla (Komova and some of the new seniors as well)

    • sainabou nyang Says:

Me too. I wish it were 2013 already.

    • Case Says:

I’ve been pondering the US 2013 Worlds. If (and that’s a big if) all of the Fierce Five does indeed return to training like they say they will, who will get sent to worlds? Will that delay the intro of some of the new US Seniors?

      • Catherine Says:

Well if Kyla does not upgrade significantly, she will be pushed out. Incoming seniors are Ohashi, Priessman, Biles, Desch and Ernst. Vault is between Maroney and Biles, Biles needs a better second vault. She is a candidate for a TTY and the way for her is clear if Maroney isn’t training. Beam is Ohashi’s to lose, her SV is 7.3-7.5 in the new code. Bars, floor and AA are more interesting. AA will be a fight between Priessman, Raisman and Ohashi- if she is able for it- and Ross. Bars best hope is Ross, maybe Ohashi also. Floor is up for grabs- and Desch/Finnegan would be good choices there too, but hope have shortcomings as all-arounders which will damage them. Maroney and Biles are both great floor workers..

I predict Ohashi/Ross/Maroney/Priessman. That has 2 all arounders and a back up, 2 great beam workers, 2 great bar workers, 2 great floor workers and 2 great vaulters…

The new code will reward risk on bars. Pirouettes have been slammed, they will still receive a slight connection but aren’t worth building on. Release combos like Tweddle and Kexin will be rewarded, so will releases into immediate Pak/Bhardwaj etc. Remains to be seen how much that will suit Ross and Ohashi!

      • Catherine Says:

        * but BOTH have shortcomings, not hope. Insert Biles for Maroney if Maroney is out. If Ohashi can’t vault properly, then Priessman can be the second all-arounder. Ohashi is still very useful for beam and bars titles, so I wouldn’t take her out for that.

      • sainabou nyang Says:

Of the current senior roster who do you think will fade away by end of 2013-2014?I like Sabrina but shes 17 and I see her and Kennedy baker doing NCAA. Rebecca Bross I think is done. Even if she comes back next year where does she fit in?All she has is bars and beam and Valeri will be focused more on Katelyn who I pray he doesn’t break.

Much Martas delight the senio roster will be overflowing next year. Who will Marta break?Who will be Martas second favorite after Katelyn?

I agree that in order for Kyla to stay in the mix those upgrades will be key. Otherwise like another poster said Kyla could end up like Bridget Sloan.

      • Dee Says:

I personally think we won’t see any Fab Five on the World’s roster. These juniors have been waiting in the wings for years, and I feel as though Marta might let them have their day. I feel that four of the Fab Five will be too busy with other things that the won’t even step foot in the gym for another year. I think Kyla is the only one with a legit shot right now, but only if she majorly upgrades. Maroney has an injury, Jordyn is probably done, Aly is Queen Media right now and I think Gabby will get distracted by something shiny and not really make a legit run for Worlds.

I feel like Katelyn could be another Bross waiting to happen…hopefully this is not the case, but it’s the feeling that I get.

      • Catherine Says:

Maroney still has a lot of time to get back in training. She can ditch beam and bars even, which would help. She’s likely to be able to begin in a few months.

I think Anna Li is done, and Bross. I see Price fading out. I don’t see Wieber and Raisman able to defeat everyone else, hard to know. I don’t see Gabby trying, yet anyway. Maroney has unfinished business and a future vault waiting for her, but is up against Biles. Sarah is up against Maddie. Lexie, Katelyn, Kyla, Maddie are all legit all-arounders too. Katelyn even without vault or floor would be extremely valuable. I don’t see her as an all-arounder all the way to 2016 alright. Kennedy, Sabrina, Elizabeth and Brenna are all NCAA material..Kennedy at least has committed I think?

      • sainabou nyang Says:

So who do you think is the second slot Marta will choose fir American cup next year?
I cant even begin to guess who will be sent from the other countries.

If I had to choose four gymnast for worlds next year Id go with Katelyn-AA,BB,UB, Kyla-assuming she upgrades-AA, BB,Fx?, Simone-FX, VT, Maddie/Lexie. Earlier I had Price in mind but im not so sure.

      • Biyatch Says:

Rumors are already out that USAG wants a guarantee from Mihai that Aly can be ready for the 2013 American Cup. When do they they usually announce the two US athletes for the American Cup? If they really are pulling for Aly my guess is its her and Kyla.

Next year will certainly be interesting.

      • Catherine Says:

I believe only Maroney, Biles (and Sacramone) have second vaults. There’s really a push for all-arounders instead of vaulters. There’s a BIG gap and they really need either Simone or McKayla, but Simone would face tough competition as her second vault is quite low at the moment. That’s why a healthy McKayla would be favoured over her, even without a TTY but if she had one it’s a no-brainer. She has stated she’s eager to get back to training, in the last few days. I will hang on to that!

I see Lexie at Scam for sure. Depends on whether she can get her vault back to some decent level..but Katelyn would probably edge out Maddie. So those two, and then Maddie or maybe Aly if she’s ready for exhibition.

      • mim Says:

catherine, i think brenna has committed to a college too (oklahoma from memory).

      • Kazic Says:

Biyatch where did you hear that?

      • sainabou nyang Says:

biyatch it kind of fits if usag wants aly to compete one last time and then she retires afterwards. I can’t wait for the tour to be over to see what kind of shape they are in.

    • DL Says:

A fully healed Mustafina vs an upgraded Ross would be AWESOME to watch. Perhaps Komova will up her mental game and it’ll be a real battle–if she could gain a little of that Mustafina fire, she’d be the one to beat. I watched her AA floor again, and it was really amazing.

      • Catherine Says:

        And Iordache and Jinnan! I can’t wait🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I think Worlds 2013 could potentially be a better fight for the AA than the last Olympics considering the injuries (and Gabby fixation).

Can only four girls represent each nation? So 2 AA choices combined with one representative for each apparatus? The AA being sent would need to be BONA FIDE all arounders then. Ross needs to upgrade floor and beam for sure (and get her amanar back) and she’d almost be a lock. I predict Ohashi will be there because Marta won’t not allow that.

The other two…hard to say at this point. Assuming Kyla and Ohashi are in, there’s a gap for vault and floor for sure. I don’t know who has second vaults besides Biles and Maroney, and I really don’t think any of the FF besides Kyla will be gunning for 2013. If Weiber comes in as a surprise she can definitely fill in, but she’d need a second vault. Preissman may also be a good candidate for floor…but don’t think she has a second vault. Finnegan is a great floor/beam worker but her beam isn’t as necessary with Kyla and Ohashi, and her vault isn’t strong enough. Yikes.

I guess the third person would be Biles since she has a second vault (I don’t think Maroney will be back in time, given her excitement for Hollywood – she’s signed with agents – and her injury, leaving her out of shape in the next few months).

The fourth person would have to be a good backup, like someone else said on here…maybe Finnegan here because she can back up on floor and beam. This would assume Ohashi and Ross are locks for bars. Bross could also be this position assuming she’s making a full run of it and has her floor back. That’s a big assumption though.

      • hurms22 Says:

If you watch the tumbling in more recent tour vids Bross is tumbling like she used to.

  2. Catherine Says:

Musty looks great here, really sharp for off-season. If she could do a Kotchetkova-LOSO which will be very much so worth doing and a few other combinations, it would eliminate the need for her to do arabians in the new code.

    • Dee Says:

I thought she looked pretty good for off-season, too. There is another video of some of the other Russians training (Komova and Nabs, I believe) and Musty looked the sharpest, IMO.

      • Catherine Says:

There’s one of Dementyeva, and she can be seen in the Musty video..severe haircut! She looks fine and is competing in the Mexican open against Baker and Dowell. But yeah, Musty looks the sharpest. Hope the Alexandrov disaster doesn’t set them all back..

      • Dee Says:

The haircut is Demy? Dear god. Didnt even recognize her.

  3. Exgymgurl Says:

wow a gymnast actually training… shocking… why isnt she like on the tour of Kelloggs gymnastics superstars? LOL

  4. nero Says:

Alexandrov is no longer the Russian head coach!! Wow that’s incredibly stupid, they went from no medals in Beijing to what like 6 in London?

If I was him I’d hop on a plane to the good ‘ole USA and go to one of the top gyms and try to work up to NTC. What gym was he at before? Martha is going to be here until Rio, whether that means in full capacity or start phasing someone new in, or wait until after Rio to start phasing in the new coordinator.

How old is Alexandrov? It might be the perfect combination of him introducing some of that Russian grace/flexibility to the younger girls, some of Martha’s Romanian ‘I’ll cut you if you fall off that beam’ training, and the USA’s depth and the girl’s mental strength of having to fight to be on a team.

    • Catherine Says:

Yeah, he was voted out. Paseka and Grishina’s coaches hate him. Apparently Russia’s efforts in London are a failure now?? This sucks, especially for Mustafina if he can no longer be her personal coach. This is actually retarded.

      • Kazic Says:

I am so pissed about this I can’t even talk about it right now. This guy coaches you to your best result in what? Over a decade? And you repay him by sacking him and leaving one of your star gymnasts (and national fucking hero btw) to an uncertain future?

Worse, you let people vote him out whose judgment has already proven questionable (Grishina’s coach)? Congratulations you’re a moron and you have torched Russia’s comeback. Not to mention, the kids that the new head coach has to ditch will probably be negatively effected by all this. Valentina and Andrei can eat a bowl of d***s as far as I’m concerned.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

This is sad but not surprising given the politics in this sport. Look at how things work in the US…just goes to show.

Yet I’m sure this will backfire. Russia should be dominant this quad given their abilities but just watch, if they miss podium in 2014 team finals this will all prove those idiots wrong.

    • Dee Says:

That would be awesome if he hopped across the pond to the USA but I think Marta would explode. Would be even more awesome if he went to some no-name gym and made an army of super stars and watched some of the current big-names here crap their pants!

      • Catherine Says:

What would be really cool is if he went to Ukraine. They have a load of talent, but poor coaching, funding and facilities. He would make them great again- but they don’t have the money for decent coaching!

      • Catherine Says:

The new guy, Yevgeny Grebyonkin is the national team bars coach- but he has personal students too, who will have to be dumped since Alxandrov’s personal coaching of Mustafina is being used as an excuse ‘conflict of interest’. Grebyonkin coaches 3- among them Ekaterina Baturina, who is really good. More upset. This is like Round Lake Survival or something..

Oh and Grishina has split from her coach. Afan and Komova’s coaches voted to save Alexandrov.

      • Kazic Says:

Alexandrov should abscond with Musty to the US. That would show them. It will never happen, but I would love him forever if it did.

      • mim Says:

big dreams here but i would love for gymnastics australia to snap him up. haha. goodness knows we need a swift kick in the rear end to make more of an impact in gymnastics.

      • Dee Says:

        Maybe he will just retire?

Yesterday when I read this I was like, oh bah he could just come to the US! But now I am thinking it would be great if he went somewhere that has a gym program that is just starting out and could make a big impact. I doubt he leaves Russia, though.

      • Kazic Says:

He may stay with Mustafina. But why remain a lowly personal coach when you could be headcoach elsewhere? Boy would I pay money to hear the conversations between he and Aliya about all this.

  5. newbie Says:

    Two things to note:
    1. I think Sabrina Vega went professional a la Bross post worlds. Can anyone confirm?
    2. Didn’t Alexandrov coach with the Karoyli’s back in the day??

    • Catherine Says:

No it was never confirmed. Nobody can offer anything one way or the other. I am going to assume she is still amateur.

      Not sure…

    • sainabou nyang Says:

I read tha alexandrov coached dom. M at karoylis and then for no reason Bela fired him.

If I had to choose where he should go nextto coach I would choose Brazil, australia, or any of other country in Europe such as France or even better UK. I think he would have success in the US but whats better than taking over a countries struggling national team andd transforming them into star gymnasts.

    • Dee Says:

I feel like Vega did go pro, I saw her in a P&G ad in a magazine with Johnson and Maroney, so I’m assuming she was also paid to be in the ad. She also has been featured in the GK magazine a few times, but I don’t think you have to be pro to do that (although most of the gymnasts featured in it are).

      • mim Says:

all i can find online is that she maybe was in a deodorant print ad.. never confirmed by anyone though!

    • hurms22 Says:

Sabrina isn’t pro and is looking at Florida. She can be in P&G ads since they sponsor the whole team and not just individuals. Lexie is even featured in some.

  6. sainabou nyang Says:

Cat I just read your blog about Alexandrov. I cant even say im shocked considering all the behind the scenes fighting. Poor Musty. Im sure Alexandrov can land work abroad.

    • Catherine Says:

It’s just so pathetic because it seems to stem from spite that Grishina choked who seems to have been the Rodionenko’s favourite, and that Mustafina who was totally written off by them rubbed their faces in it, essentially. Such a blow for the team. The new guy seems fine, but with his juniors who will have to be turfed around, Mustafina probably abandoned again and Grishina in limbo…what a disaster.
