Mag 7 reunion missing “the snob”

mag7_1

Of course Dominique Dawes couldn’t be there for the get together. She is too good to share the stage with those pions.

Pictures here.

Jaycie dresses like a teenager. Amy like a slob. Kerri like a Lesbian,Dominique dresses like a wanna be, Shannon like a CEO or a soccer mom at the PTA and Amanda looks like a mom.

Everyone is smiling and laughing and Kerri looks mad. It is weird to look at these pictures and think these girls are really friends with Kerri and not because they did anything. Kerri is the one that looks like she doesn’t want to be there.

Jackie Fie has added Gabby Douglas to her favorite athletes. Color me not surprised. USA-Gymnastics is so phony and biased.

Ichiro you make me siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick. $ell out.

I’m not sure it’s possible for both Doms to be in the same place at the same time the universe might explode and be sucked into a giant black hole or something lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

HA, Lol you are right. The planet doesn’t need that much ego in one place.

I know Dawes was traveling to London. It said in a tweet but if she wasn’t such a fucking glory hog she would have made sure she was there.

  2. Elitefan Says:

The “15th” reunion? Unless this happened last year, there is a math problem here…even if you mess up the subtraction, Olympics are every four years…

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      I hate Math. Lets seeeeee………….. It’s 16, 2012 minus 1996

      • JAS4 Says:

Got to love that it’s airing during team finals instead of before or after lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I figured it was NBC. They really think this team we have now is going to win. This smells like a last chance to celebrate the 96 team and they never have celebrated them.

      • Dee Says:

…how is this different than any Olympics, Worlds, Nationals, or Scam Cup where the team is “celebrated” in some way? I swear NBC mentions and/or has some sort of fluff with them on the podium in some way.

      • Dee Says:

Which I find to be funny because now they want to “celebrate” it…we’ve been doing that for the past 15 or 16 years!

  3. Lithi Says:

Is it me or does it seem like when Dominique poses she does it so she’s flaunting her engagement ring/wedding band? I swear.

We know, Dom, you got bling. Now go away.

Amy doesn’t look like a slob to me, oh well. *shrugs*

  4. JAS4 Says:

    This makes me laugh

Shannon looks old. Too old to have had work done. Fire that doc.

I dress like Jaycie Phelps. But I wouldn’t dress like that at an interview on national television (or with NBC). I’d probably wear something like Amanda. Something that’s more “sophisticated former athlete” over “I am on my way to a funeral.” (Shannon).

Amy Chow needs makeup. Like, yesterday.

Kerri Strug needs a hairdresser. Like, the day before yesterday.

Damn, Moceanu is like the GIANT of all of them. Talk about how Bela may have stunted your growth!

This is very much a setup of how “this team is about to be replaced.”

    • Dee Says:

Is that Dom’s actual height or is she wearing some mega shoes? That was the first thing I saw, was how she looms over everyone else!

    • terrigymfan Says:

      My take:

That’s about the worst I’ve seen Shannon look in a long time. She looked so cute in that video a couple of months ago when she threw out the first pitch at a baseball game. Here she looks so stiff and I agree her plastic surgery face appears to be wilting. Did she accidentally leave a hanger in her dress?

Amanda is one of those women who doesn’t even look like the same person as when she was young. I thought she was so cute in 1996. Now – well, better left unsaid.

Jaycie is dressed like a teenager but I have to say she has maintained her looks (and figure) more than any of them. Amy looks about like she always has.

I’m sorry, but Kerri is just plain β€œplain.” Always has been but she could at least make some effort, especially when appearing at these events. I agree with you Sandy that a trip to the salon is sorely needed for that girl. A full makeover including wardrobe is what she really needs.

My word Dom looks like a giant in this picture. I know she is standing next to some very short women, but she looks like she is about a foot taller than Kerri. I think she was 4’3” at the 1996 Olympics when she was almost 15. She has to be at least 5’4” now (does anybody know how tall she is?). If there is any truth to the idea that elite gymnastics stunts a girl’s growth while she is training Dom is living proof of it.

      • Dee Says:

I saw Shannon in person a few months ago, she is soooo teeny tiny, it was shocking!

For some reason you saying Dom looks like a giant made me LOL so hard. Interesting that Dom shot up so much and Kerri literally looks like she didnt grow at all since Atlanta.

      • Aerial Says:

I am surprised people don’t think Amanda looks good. She looks the best of them all, and has since the games, IMO. She’s naturally beautifully and puts together fitted, classy, casual outfits at interviews.

Kerri just can’t look good, I don’t think. She looks like some sort of rodent and her hair is awful texture and cut.

Amy has always looked sloppy and cared nothing about her appearance. At least this time she’s not in mom jeans and sneakers, and everyone else (but Jaycie) in dresses.

Jaycie is still tiny but I can’t believe she wore one of her own gym shirts to this reunion and photo session. Remember she went through this brief period where she dressed really nicely and cared about her makeup and hair… she was dating Jason’s Gatson and wanted to open a spa. Since then, she’s a coach all the time. I’m not quite sure how bright she is either.

Dominique always has nice outfits and pulls herself together hair to shoes. She does look bigger framed than the others but in person I’m sure would be the size of my left leg.

Shannon… saved the worst for last. Since she started carving up her face, I haven’t been able to look at her. I watched Shannon on TV since her first year as a senior, and am used to the bushy ponytail and her orginal nose. She is unattractively bone-thin now and her hacked-up face is not attractive either. I get so sad when people change their entire appearance but then stay in the public eye, because I can’t adjust and see them as the same person any longer. Plastic surgery makes EVERYONE look older these days. Case in point, the new Lindsay Lohan, and Bachelorette Emily Maynard is mid-twenties? That’s crazy, she looks older than me and I’m almost ten years older, which is hard to believe. Google her before her surgeries and boob job, still pretty but much different looking.

Amanda wins this one! And I think she’s slimmer than the wash on her jeans/angle of the photo makes her appear. All photos I’ve seen of her and on her gym website have been stunning, no matter what she’s wearing, over the years.

      • Gymbee Says:

I agree that Amanda looks great! Shannon looks at least 10 years older than her I think.

Can’t believe Jaycee is wearing that. Looks like she just threw something on, or came straight from the gym.

      • Dee Says:

I agree, Amanda looks really good.

Kerri has that “new tired mom” look in some of the photos. Which is appropriate!

      • terrigymfan Says:

Okay, I’ll take back my negative statement about Amanda. I’m definitely outvoted on that one. I guess I just thought she was so cute when she was competing so it is hard to measure up against that.

I’m not surprised that Dom is so big framed. You could tell she was going to be that way even when she was in Atlanta. (She always reminded me of that old cartoon character “Mighty Mouse”). What surprises me is how much she has grown in height since then. Most girls grow maybe 4 or 5 inches when they hit their “growth spurt” but she looks like she shot up over a foot in height.

  8. sarah Says:

God i hate living in New Zealand, since we dont actually have any gymnast competing in the games, there not really covering it.

    • Dee Says:

Noooo that stinks…NBC online is apparently broadcasting every minute of the games (you probably new that but just in case!)…you could get coverage that way!

      • Dee Says:

omg *knew…yikes too early to remember basic English

      • terrigymfan Says:

OMG Dee. No need to apologize. I hope people are not holding me accountable for some of the spelling errors I see on my messages after I send them!

      • Dee Says:

LOL Terri, I feel less silly now. i am part of another message board (non gym related) where the people FREAK OUT!!! if you have an error ahahahah

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yeah, I’ve been on some message board where people are quick to point out the slightest spelling or grammar error. On the one hand I am kind of old school myself and prefer writing (and reading) complete sentences, but on this board almost everybody is intelligent and expressing himself or herself in a comprehensible way even when using a little shorthand. I haven’t seen much in the way of spelling or grammar police and I hope it stays that way. It takes all the fun out of it if you are afraid you can’t hit send (especially when using a smartphone) without having rechecked your comment 15 times for possible spelling/grammar errors.

    • Catherine Says:

Same, although we do have a MAG here. You won’t have a chance at NBC, it will be region-blocked and secured so that an IP shield won’t do it. BUT it should work for BBC, who will have livestreams of everything online. It’s what I’ll be doing for anything not on the TV like prelims session 5, I have BBC TV but no access to online.

      • Dee Says:

Thanks for clairfying…actually I might watch BBC’s online stream instead, even though I am in the US. Watched it for Worlds in ’10 and I loved it!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

BBC has the best commentators! WAY better than Elfie and Daggett!

      • MacStabby Says:

Oohhhh wasn’t aware BBC was doing a livestream! HELLO MITCH AND CHRISTINE!

      • sarah Says:

        thank god,
i was starting to think id have to search youtube
If its got commentators better then Elfie and Daggett, might mean i dont have to mute the sound for once.

  9. Alexander Says:

Amy Chow and Shannon Miller are the only members of the mag 7 who don’t make me nauseous. I would say Dominique dawes except her form sometimes made me want to crap my pants. I don’t care about Chows form because she can play piano and is a doctor – not a washed up attention seeker who never lived up to her expectations (don’t think this gymnasts needs naming).

  10. Dee Says:

So I”m on twitter on my phone and can’t link it to here…but on Nastia’s twitter she tweeted “Sending our love from London” and someone commented under it “You mean we still have to see your annoying ass in london stealing the spotlight from the girls who actually made the team?”

hahahahahhaha. I bet it gets deleted soon but I LOL’d so hard.

    • terrigymfan Says:

I thought GTT said she doesn’t do twitter?

    • sanitynmotion Says:

That is so super awesome someone said that. “Like” if that were a FB comment. That perfectly sums it up. I hope it goes on undetected by her and doesn’t get deleted.

      • Dee Says:

I was a tad surprised to see it because non of the comments I’ve ever seen on her twitter were negative. Maybe she’s not moderating them as closely. She also is rarely tweeting, I wonder if she isnt embarassed over all the Trials hoopla.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

That girl is anything but embarrassed – with the exception of the face plant on bars. Other than that I’m sure she wanted all that attention.

The quote is still there! Hahahaha…nobody replied to it either. Oh that just makes me laugh. I kind of want to “retweet” it.

      • Dee Says:

I know if I were her, I would be still hiding under the mats with embarassment!

LOL noone came to the rescue with how it is not true? Now THAT is embarassing!

      • terrigymfan Says:

Twitter kind of confuses me. I thought that if you had a twitter account tweets sent to you do not show up on your feed for others to see unless you “retweet” them, which would explain why messages criticizing someone don’t usually show up on these feeds. Am I right on that? If so, maybe Nastia was drunk and retweeted the comment by mistake.

      • Dee Says:

Terri – the retweet thing I dont know about for sure, but this comment was under a photo she tweeted from Instagram, so I think she can see it, whether or not it is a retweet? I dont have twitter, so I’m not 100%?

      • terrigymfan Says:

It says “Kelley Lynskey” is the person who made the comment. Anybody heard of her?

      • JAS4 Says:

Here’s the link to it I’m surprised Mary Margret hasn’t attacked yet lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

        No but I think she’s awesome. πŸ™‚

It looks like she posted “to” (or tweeted to) Nastia under that picture so everyone can see the comment. I’m not 100% sure though.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I just did a google search of her name. Looks like she is a real person living in Florida. Former ballet student and now photographer and writer. Has a facebook account and twitter account. We ought to somehow suggest to her she come on here and chat with us. She is obviously a very astute and intelligent young woman!

      • Aerial Says:

        Amazing!!! Love the comment!

You know the other thing that needs to stop? WOGA tweeting multiple pictures daily of Carly and Nastia’s photos from past Olympics. #1 – Stop reminding us you USED to have athletes on an Olympic team. #2 – It IS stealing focus from the current Olympic team – when do they ever cheer on the current athletes or provide info about the current gymnastics competitions? #3 – I’d rather them post pictures of Bross following USAs, to honour a real current competitor from their gym who could have made the team but did not. #4 – It’s laughable, trying to remind everyone Nastia was a champion once, because in the now, she bombed and made a half-ass comeback, fell on her ass every time on bars, and they’re trying to rewind to focus on their expired champion from 4 years ago.

Get over Nastia and Carly already! Beyond the fact that Carly went through the most awkward and unsightly 5-year transition period ever immediately following the games and looks awful in all the pics!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You are so mean. I think you have been hanging around me and this blog too long.lol

Every 4 years gymnasts like Dawes and Liukin try and steal the attention from the real Olympians. Dawes keeps tweeting Gabby to get her attention.

      • Dee Says:

Terri I am laughing so hard about you googling her. How creepy would we be if we facebooked her and told her to come over here LOL

      • Guest Says:

Because she know she cannot get the level of publicity and attention that Shawn or Marylou got. She just tried all means to maximize her attention no matter will it steal the attention which other people deserve.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yeah. It would probably freak her out so better not I guess.

  11. sanitynmotion Says:

See, had a feeling nobody would go unscathed at these Olympics. Not sure it stops here either. If she doesn’t win vault, whoever does needs to send a BIG thank you card to Marta Karolyi.

    http://www.examiner.com/article/question-of-the-day-is-mckayla-maroney-all-right

    • Catherine Says:

Other reporters saying she has a sore toe on her right foot. Taking it easy, but did vault timers and a floor dance through. I’m keeping the faith she will be fine.

      • JAS4 Says:

If McKayla competes Vault in prelims could they then pull her for her injury and put in Elizabeth for team finals and if they did would McKayla still be able to do Vault EF or would they have to keep McKayla on the roster and just use Aly or Kyla in TF for McKayla to be able to do Vault EF?

      • Dee Says:

I think once an athlete is pulled, they are pulled..I dont think you can keep switching athletes/alternates in and out of the competition, or else EVERYONE would do that, you know? Dont know the official rule, though.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I would imagine that once McKayla is “out” she’s out. They could have her do her vault in quals and then have her rest her foot during team finals (though that would make no sense, and imagine the uproar since that’s literally why she was chosen to be on this team) and have her compete only at the vault event finals.

      • Dee Says:

It’s actually a tough call…either sacrifice the team medal for an almost promised individual gold, or take away the shot for the individual gold in hopes that her vault helps the US win team gold (which is not so much a lock as her winning vault gold is, even if she hits during TF, since it depends on the rest of the US team hitting, also).

I dont know what they will decide, if they have to decide anything. I doubt she is really “injured”, I think it’s more precaution than anything. I think no matter what, she is going to compete the entire games.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Actually, I don’t think you can sub in an alternate at all after the “technical meeting” that occurs before the competition starts. So if McKayla gets hurt during prelims, you have to finish the team competition, including team finals, with the remaining four primary gymnasts.

I think Dee has stated the delimma correctly if there is a question about Mckayla. You could have her do prelims so that she qualfies for individual vault finals. But if she gets hurt she would not be there for TF the next day when it really counts. Or you could pull her from prelims when it really doesn’t matter for team score and just have her vault in team finals, but her chance at an individual medal would disappear. I hope this is all hypothetical talk.

  12. terrigymfan Says:

One thing that is interesting about looking at this picture is it makes you realize just how tiny most of the Mag 7 were. They were all under five feet tall, and one — Dom — was really tiny at 4’3″. All of this year’s team except Gabby are at least five feet tall, and I think McKayla and Kyla are probably at least 5’3″ tall. Even Gabby is probably about 4’10” tall. And actually the average age of the members of the 1996 team was probably greater than this year’s team. Only Dom (nearly 15) was a real “youngster.” The rest were anywhere from 16 to 19 in age.

    • Aerial Says:

Yes, very interesting. Loved the Mag 7 but it did follow/continue a quad of very depleted gymnasts – admittedly not eating, starving themselves at the Olympics, none of them were friends or enjoyed their time together as teenagers. These kids are loving all social aspects and “SEEM” to be much healthier and multi-faceted than the Karolyi/Dynamo-era gymnasts.
The Mag 7 seemed to stay so tiny, considering half of them were second time Olympians! And I guess proved that puberty and growth spurts really can happen after later in your teens.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They were friends, some of them anyway but remember the internet did not exist back then and at the time besides phony Moceanu none of them cared about being media darlings. They were worker bees.

      • Aerial Says:

I always point out the social media thing too and how it has affected such situations, closed gaps and increased support. The ’92 team admitted none of them enjoyed the games and couldn’t wait to leave. They WERE worker bees and seemed stressed beyond belief. None had personalities and didn’t even smile marching into the area.
I think their relationships have been bettered as they’ve matured, been honest with one another about their actual experiences, and had other things in their lives like tours, partners, children, gyms and camps they mutually supported, etc.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I think there was a pretty big difference between the 96 team and the 92 team. I think most of the 96 team had a pretty good time and were pretty friendly with each other. Most were a little older too and thus not quite so subject to Marta and Bela’s oppressiveness. The 92 team was a different story. That was the height of the attempt to have a team with as many young, tiny, elfin-looking girls as possible. I do think many of them were malnourished. There was a pretty big backlash in the media about that. The whole Kim Kelly debacle also added an air of tension to everything. Bela being the head coach didn’t help because he was always bickering with the other coaches and creating tension. IMO Shannon’s wonderful individual performance is all the more remarkable given the circumstances.

      • Aerial Says:

Totally agree. Was furthering what I wrote about “the quad the 96 team followed”.

      • JAS4 Says:

So I was watching tv and saw realized that Gabby’s floor music is also in this tostitos commercial near the last part

    • elitefan Says:

From Dominique’s book: “I had a major growth spurt of nearly eight inches after the Olympics. I went from being the smallest member of Team USA at 4′ 4″ and 70 pounds, to 5′ and 98 pounds, which may still sound small, but it was considered pretty tall for a gymnast back then. I’ve often wondered if that growth spurt was a result, in part, of finally being able to eat. From the age of ten through fourteen, my caloric intake was extremely limited even though I spent the majority of my days working out in the gym. The Karolyis always seemed to think the less food, the better. I can’t help but think that my growth was stunted to some degree during that period from malnourishment and, now, my body was making up for lost time. I also allowed myself to eat some of the forbidden foods that I had always craved, like bread, sweets, and even pizza on occasion. I was never educated about counting calories or understanding the difference between and function of carbohydrates and proteins, so I never approached my weight or weight loss in a healthy way.”

Moceanu, Dominique; Williams, Paul and Teri (2012-06-12). Off Balance (Kindle Locations 2375-2378). Simon & Schuster, Inc.. Kindle Edition.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Dom must have had another growth spurt even after that. She looks like she is at least 5’4″ tall im that pic.

      • JAS4 Says:

I grew some when I was pregnant so maybe she grew a few inches when she was pregnant OT something lol

      • gymglitterxx Says:

Also Dom’s quote about “finally being able to eat” makes me fume. Sure she wasn’t eating much as a gymnast, but does she think the way she looks NOW is healthier?????? Please.

    • gymglitterxx Says:

I have the large hardback book about the Mag 7 with profiles of all the girls (written in 1996) and it lists several of their heights as being over 5’……..True though this year’s team is taller

      • terrigymfan Says:

I just did a little research and you are right that all the members of the Mag 7 were supposedly 5 feet or over except Dom and Kerri. Jaycie was the tallest at 5’3″. All should be essentially the same height now except Dom who of curse had major growth spurts after the Olympics. What is throwing me is this picture. I just googled Dom and it says her height is 5’3″ which is what I always thought it was. But she looks several inches taller than the rest of these women. Very odd.

      • Dee Says:

omg gymglitter i have that book at my parents house from when I was a kid…it is falling apart i looked at it so much…since there was really no internet/social media then, those were the only gymnastics pictures i had HAHAHA oh man. i remember reading everyone’s height and weight, now that you mention it. i had forgotten about my Mag 7 book collection.

      • terrigymfan Says:

What’s hilarious is how back then they routinely listed a gymnast’s height and weight everywhere. They would even do it under their names when they showed them on TV, and the announcers were always talking about it. Now it seems it is totally non-PC to mention it. I can understand weight but really can’t see why there is such a hangup mentioning their height.

      • Dee Says:

I think it was after the ’96 games that I remember no longer seeing weight listed by the athlete’s name along with the height. I was glad they stopped listing weight. I agree, height isnt that big of a deal…I think in college though they still list the height? I thought I saw that when I watched a meet on TV this past season, but I might just be imagining things.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Yes it’s a good thing IMO they don’t list weight or generally talk about “body types.” They still use code words though. The “international look” tends to mean long and slim with little to no boobs! LOL

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Hah yeah “international style” = thin legs, thin torso, no boobs and no hips. “Power house” = muscular legs, straight-body, slight hips, arm muscles.

On our USA team we got Aly and Jordyn rockin the power house look and Gabby, McKayla, and Kyla rocking the international look. Whatever.

They’re all skinny and if I had any of their bodies I’d be on my way to Jack N the Box right now ordering an oreo milkshake…because it wouldn’t be showing up on my waist later.

      • terrigymfan Says:

LOL. When I was in high school I rocked the “international look” to the max. I wanted boobs and hips and the other signs of “womanhood” so badly I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how lucky I was though because I could stop by for the “oreo milkshakes” with complete impunity!

Could someone give me the link to the BBC livestream?

  15. alex Says:

I think they look good. I probably wouldn’t choose to wear crazy- tall shoes when I’m meeting up with former gymnasts, but whatever. Nastia also did that when she was on the floor “commentating”, and she just TOWERED over the athletes. It looked super awkward. Weird choice.

  16. nero Says:

OMG OMG you guise!!!1 Jordyn, Aly, Kyla and Mckayla all took a pic with Ryan Lochte, but WHERE IS GABBY??? I guess Lochte is part of this mean girls clique and hates Gabby too. I hope Phelps kicks his ass for obviously bullying poor defenseless Gabby

    • Gymbee Says:

I knooooow!!! Soooo inconsiderate of the girls and Lochte. I hear he’s planning on taking her place in the clique.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Next thing we’ll see is Ryan in the icebucket with those four!

Seriously, it does look like Gabby is not eating dinner with the other girls.

      • Gym lover Says:

Gabby is focused on gold! You can hate the playa but you can’t hate the game. Just like Nastia was in 08! No fun and games…just games….” Olympic” games that is….keep your eyes focused on the prize Gabby. You are the best in the world…do your gymnastics and the world will see!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        Why are you here.lol

      • Aerial Says:

Watch out for Lochte. He’s already been in the Village long enough to have contracted who knows what.

      • terrigymfan Says:

Hopefully he’s at least making use of a few of those 100,000 condoms they’ve brought in for the Olympics.

      • Dee Says:

Watch out all the ladies of the village! He knows now having a girlfriend back home while living at the village is a “mistake”!Babies for all!

Seriously…I am still skeeved from that Village/condom article LOL

I get the impression Katie was overwhelmed that this star wanted to0 date her.

I pretty much was told by a Hollywood insider that Cruise was really gay but a total closet case. He had a boyfriend once who also was in a popular band and was also a closet case. Long story short, all of these Hollywood types are just plain weird and use these types of plays for their careers.

There was also a rumor (not told to me by this insider person but something I heard from somewhere else – not sure where, it was so long ago) that Katie Holmes was actually impregnated by her then-boyfriend whats-his-face…the dude that was on American Pie who she was engaged to but then broke up with him right before she met/ran off with Cruiseboy. She said that it was Tom’s baby but it really wasn’t. That’s why she hid Suri from the media for so long, because if she looked like that whats-his-face guy then it’d be kind of obvious. I don’t see much of Tom in Suri at all so I guess I wouldn’t be shocked if that were true. Let’s face it they all have great lawyers.

I never watched Dawson’s Creek…I’ll be nice to the Joey character but I don’t have to play nice to Katie Holmes. πŸ™‚ She’s a rich (sub-par) movie star. She’ll be fine.

  21. Kel Says:

So…I had a dream last night or maybe it could be called a nightmare. In my dream, Marta had to fill in as one of the alternates. She competed on beam. Luckily, she was not wearing a leo in my dream. She was wearing warm-ups. She did a patterson dismount, but did have a hop on the landing. So weird and disturbing all at the same time!!!

  22. Kel Says:

After reading about training today, I would be a little nervous about the Russians if I were team USA. They sounded like they had a lot of upgrades and were competing well on vault. Our vault advantage may not be much of an advantage. I am sure the US will score higher on execution, but as soon as the US move to bars I think Russia will move ahead. I would much prefer if the US women were considered underdogs.

    • Gym lover Says:

Where did u read on the Russians’ training?! And no I wasn’t kidding 1 bit. It’s going down.

      • Kel Says:

The Gym Examiner and NBC Olympics have great updates about the training sessions today…

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Ahhhh I’ve always said the Russians are going to be a feat to beat. Haha, I rhymed! Before Musty got injured, this was almost their gold to lose. I still think it will be a fight between USA and Russia for that gold. They’ve been holding off on their amanars/hard FX for fear of reinjury, but now they’re going to be finally showing their hands.

That’s why I’ve said it’ll come down to beam/floor. The vault/bars almost is a wash. I know USA has higher beam D scores generally but they also have form issues and international judges will deduct for that. So say things are tied going into floor…should be very interesting. Especially if Marta royally screwed herself by telling Kyla not to upgrade and having to use her because Maroney is injured and Gabby’s floor choreo will be shat on by the judges in quals.

I think the podium will have the US, Russia, and Romania on it but which order has yet to be determined. Everyone was saying top 2 would be US and Romania but I always thought it would be US and Russia.

      • Dee Says:

Although I keep thinking Romania could surprise us all, Russia is making me sweat with all these vault upgrades. I do agree that the podium will be US, Russia, Romania, but I am so unsure of the order. I would much prefer to see Romania up there instead of Russia, I have such a soft spot for that team, but I’m starting to think Russia might just take it all.

  23. Luckystar Says:

The Duchess of Cambridge (Prince Williams wife Kate Middleton for those who have been hibernating for the past few years and haven’t been bombarded with Royal Wedding/Jubilee news) will be watching gymnastics on August 5th.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2177933/London-Olympics-2012-Prince-Harry-Prince-William-Kate-Middleton-30-different-events.html

That’s the Men’s Pommel Horse and Floor Exercise Finals and the Women’s Vault Final, so Mckayla might get to meet her if/when she medals.

Although, for some reason I feel like Mckayla might prefer Prince Harry lol πŸ™‚

  24. Kel Says:

I definitely think it will be close between the US and Russia. Just hope the US girls aren’t overly confident going into the team final. I hate that they are considered the gold medal favorites…wish they were the underdogs. It just seems whenever someone is the favorite, they get jinxed (just like the Sports Illustrated cover). If the Russian girls can pull off their upgrades, they could just sneak past the US.

    • Luckystar Says:

I agree. The USA is known for there difficulty, but not for their form and execution. If the Russian’s pull off their upgrades and get a competitive D-Score, then they definitely have a shot at the gold medal.

I don’t think the girls are going to be too confident going in. They understand the sport, and know that the competition will be close.

I’m more concerned about the pressure all the media attention is putting on them. The magazines and newspapers are celebrating a win that hasn’t even happened yet. Even though the girls probably realize that they may not come in first, they know that the world expects them to. That would be pretty nerve wracking.

Fortunately Gabby’s the only headcase on this team and even she’s gotten better, so I’m crossing my fingers that no one cracks under pressure.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Mustafina does not have even decent execution. Her form is worse than Aly’s

      • Kel Says:

I think that is what worries me…the media celebrating a win that hasn’t happened yet. Well said! Let’s see how the competition unfolds and then celebrate whoever wins.

With Mustafina…I know she was a mess at Europeans but all of the Russian gymnasts sound much improved since then. I guess I haven’t seen her compete enough to have paid much attention to her execution. If you read the blogs today from training they make the Russian girls sound amazing, but then again, they are not the ones judging the competition.

      • nero Says:

Actually the USA has some of the better form and execution out there. People keep saying that Aly is going to get hammered by the E score judges and she’s going to be ‘shocked’ by her scores

If Aly should be worried, than Mustafina and Ponor should be just as concerned.

      • sarah Says:

Aly done heaps of international competitions, her scores have never been that bad, unlike Gabby, Aly international results actually back her up.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

True but Shawn Johnson had done lots of international competitions too (being the World Champ and all) and she was marked down considerably for form in Beijing. Made no sense why her beam was so low in the AA (from what I remember, after her beam I was pretty irritated because she had no chance to catch Liukin at that point).

Aly’s form is way worse than Shawn Johnson’s. Musty has bad form on certain elements (her twisting elements specifically) but I feel like the judges look the other way when it comes to deducting points from a Russian. Hence, Nastia’s form on bars and nobody took off any points there. They just gave her points.

      • Catherine Says:

Russia’s d-score is huge now, they are a point ahead. Their floor upgrades bring their total to 77.9 Currently USA have 76.8 (or 76.6 using Mckayla’s floor), China have around 76.7 and Romania 76.2. Of course execution is a factor as well, but yesterday Paseka’s amanar was described as ‘wonderful’ which is a bit concerning if it eats into America’s advantage. Komova’s was described as off-direction and Aliya did not do one- though she is still slated to pull one off. If she doesn’t, that brings Russia down to 77.1- still ahead.

USA’s beam scores aren’t really that high, they are the lowest of the 4. Of course, Kyla’s 6.2 ‘low d-score’ beam will receive a high execution score- and it relies on Russia staying on the beam too. Russia have upgraded fiercely in the last while! Grishina’s floor goes from a 5.5 not that long ago to 6.1, Vika’s from 5.8 to 6.3!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Thanks Catherine that’s interesting. See, Marta totally bit off her nose to spite her face by telling Kyla not to upgrade. If Grishina could do it Kyla could have too. I really feel that vault will not be so much a factor this Team Finals. Russia will more than make up for it on bars, and if they hit beam too, well – USA is out of another gold medal (assuming nobody falls apart on floor).

Typically the team that is first heading into the final event (floor) wins the whole thing. I think it’s because floor is generally low scoring and the team in first is so excited that by this point, they do killer routines to seal the deal.

I’m excited for this competition, but I really think that USA is going to have to come on strong in order to win. It was never theirs to begin with. I knew Russia would surprise.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Gabby has really only headcased on beam (recently), so hopefully she won’t be used in 3 up 3 count. I also don’t see her being used on floor, but if her difficulty is much higher than Maroney’s I’m now wondering only after seeing the D scores Catherine posted.

      • Catherine Says:

Correction- Mustafina showed more beam upgrades so their total is now 78! Taking away Musty’s amanar gives 77.3, I did it wrong before and took away 0.8. I am not using Gabby on beam for that- she does have a higher d-score than Kyla, but kinda useless if she grabs the beam, I don’t see them chancing her. Beam is Aly, Jordyn, Kyla. Gabby has 0.2 over McKayla on floor, yet McKayla still has the graceful execution advantage..they may still use her.

I agree, Kyla should have upgraded. Not neccessarily floor- it would be useful of course if she had a 6.1 routine, but moreso her beam and bars. She looks wll capable of higher difficulty.

      • Gymbee Says:

Yikes Russia! That is one hell of a D-score advantage! Wow that is going to be exciting. Thanks for telling, I had no clue they were ahead.
For some reason, I can see them chancing beam on Gabby though, not sure why. Just cause it would be a stupid Marta thing to do.

    Lordache might be injured! http://www.gymnastike.org/article/13710

    • sanitynmotion Says:

They’ll never take Iordache out – she’s their star and without her they have NO shot for Olympic gold unless everybody else completely headcases. Maybe she’s just struggling with a pass and having mental issues. If she can jog and stuff then maybe it’s not too serious. I hope she’s not injured because I do want to see a good competition from all of the teams here.

    • Catherine Says:

Sounds more like a meltdown out of frustration at things not going her way? If she’s jogging normally etc. it doesn’t sound like an injury. Maybe jet lag is only after hitting her and her energy is way down so that’s why she stopped tumbling and didn’t vault.

I really hope she’s fine, she’s my favourite to take the all-around. Romania are screwed without her- top AA contender, all 4 events in TF AND a very likely medal in beam and floor EF. Haidu is their alternate, which doesn’t work at all here…

    Gedderts blog

    • terrigymfan Says:

I am glad Geddert and the rest of the coaches are being extra careful that the team follows all the crazy technical rules for the competition that could cost us points if some of these international judges want to get picky. Example is the rule that Jeni has to be on the podium at all times. I still remember Bela giving the head international judge the excuse to screw the US out of the bronze in 1988 by not knowing some obscure rule and teaching it to his gymnasts.

I also agree with Geddert that those who say we should have named an “experienced” gymnast as an alternate (ASac obviously is who he is talking about) are wrong. The more importan thing was to name alternates who would fill in skills gaps if needed, We have plenty of leadership on the team as it is.

      • gymnastwannabe Says:

Love how he shows he disagrees with Marta. Seems like he understands the need for balance so the girls aren’t exhausted (like Shawn talked about being so worn out). Too bad he can’t replace Marta – he has produced one heck of an athlete w/out having to kill her.

      • terrigymfan Says:

I also like that there seems to be a refreshing dose of humbleness about Geddert. He’s a good coach but he knows he is pretty lucky to have had a girl of Jordyn Wieber’s ability and demeanor just show up on his doorstep one day. What I can’t stand are coaches who, quite frankly, luck into an association with a great athlete, ride that relationship to fame, and then protray themselves as the person who “discovered” and single-handedly “developed” the great athlete. Does Bela/Nadia ring a bell?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Didn’t Bela pick Nadia out of a playground? If that movie is true he did kind of discover her.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I think he did find her at a play ground but didn’t they only train MLR for like a year or two before the Olympics

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        A few months, yep

      • terrigymfan Says:

I have Bela’s book at home and will look at it again tonight. I recall he said he went through kindergartens and stuck his head in classrooms and asked, “Who wants to be a gymnast” and she eagerly raised her hand. I guess you could say he did “discover” her but developing her into the great athlete she turned out to be, I call BS on that.

      • terrigymfan Says:

FYI, last night I reread the portion of Bela’s book where he says he discovered Nadia. He says he was going through kindergartens looking for potential prospects for his team when he saw two little girls doing cartwheels on the playground but they ran inside before he could find out who they were. He says he then spent the rest of the day looking in classrooms to find them. He says he found them in the very last classroom he looked. One was Nadia.

I really wish Peng Peng could have competed at these Games. That said, Anna’s injury is really a non-issue since Marta would never use her anyways. I do hope she’s OK though. Nobody wants to be injured for the sake of it.

      • Catherine Says:

Well she was given an MRI and other tests in hospital…USAG said it was ‘routine’ but it’s not really if she just peeled off on a release and landed safely so it does sound like it was worse than that. They did say everything returned normal results and that she appears to be fine. I’m guessing she’s resting up.

      • Dee Says:

oh I was so sad when Peng Peng got hurt…she was one of my favorites! Would have been great to see her walk into the arena. Now my favorite Canadian is Moors.
