He’s back and the Russian Cup

Fabian is back and staying healthy. He is like the Chellsie Memmel of mens gymnastics. Always hurt when it matters. It would be nice to see him healthy at the Olympics for once.

Viktoria Komova won the Russian cup.

  1. JAS4 Says:

I think the AA battle will be close in London as long as none of the major contenders have huge mistakes

    • Jen Says:

Co-sign, though if Komova has an Amanar and Wieber’s beam connections are credited, those two will probably set themselves apart.

    • doughnut sundae Says:

Provided the Russian team can skirt injury (their best members have no close substitutes) we may be in for a rollercoaster ride.

P.S. Komova’s mom was a judge – again! I bet she scored her little angel on the uneven bars…

      • JAS4 Says:

Lol I’m surprised Marta didn’t think of that and have Nastia or Gabby’s Moms judge lol

      • Dee Says:

oh gag! I knew the scores must have been inflated somehow, just like over here in the US of A. Having mom judge? Seriously?

I’m starting to put less and less stock into scores on home turf. Each country seems to be inflating scores at home meets…which is what will make the Olympics so much more interesting, when the scores are not as high!

  2. JAS4 Says:

    (from last year)

Dear Alicia, please get this vault ASAP 🙂

    • Anonymous Says:

I 2nd that! Who would have thought Aly and Alicia could be on the same 5 member team! With this vault, it could happen.

      • Casc Says:

Technically it is possible, but I’m afraid they are not going to risk with no back-up bar worker. Only if suddenly Aly starts to score close to 15 on bars (I know, she is a fighter, but she is still no Jordyn) and Alicia gets back her floor that could happen. A really small chance.

      • Anonymous Says:

If they take McKayla which right now its her spot to lose… they still have no back up for bars. I would put up Aly before McKayla on bars. So if Alicia beats McKayla on vault then there you have it… technically possible as Casc says.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

This is somewhat off-topic, but why was ASac passed up in ’04 (I know she was a mess on beam) when they took TWO vault specialists? And I’m sorry but Mohini was sub-par. Anyone know?

      • Dee Says:

I think Mo went because of her sponsorship from Pam Anderson (am I remembering that correctly?) and the fact that it made for a good “story”…but that’s just my opinion. I think it had a lot to do with favoritism in ’04.

      • JAS4 Says:

The 04 team would have probably done a lot better if it had ASac and a healthy Memmel

      • gymtruthteller Says:

That is my opinion too. Mohini was being scored very strictly until Anderson put her in the spotlight.

      • Dee Says:

        I totally agree, JAS!

      • JAS4 Says:

But then again maybe Marta doesn’t want the team to actually win she just likes to have them come close so she can keep saying next time they’ll win so she can hang around longer and use wanting to win a gold as her reason for not retiring lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah and Hollie Vise! It kills me she wasn’t taken. She was worlds better than Nastia ever was or ever will be.

      • Caitlin Says:

ASac probably would’ve been at least an alternate but she was inconsistent. Marta liked her, but she fell too much at nationals and failed to make trials, so she had no shot. IMO she could’ve very easily taken Mohini’s spot since sadly Vise and Memmel were injured… I liked Vise and Memmel 10x more but Alicia would’ve obviously been a great VT/FX person and in the situation that she had to go up on beam (happened to Mo) she would’ve been better. but she obviously just wasn’t ready.

  3. sanitynmotion Says:

I just hope we can see this vault in competition from her before she retires…I don’t see both her and Aly making the team (and let’s face it, Aly is a lock right now unless she gets injured) but I can see her as the traveling alternate unless Marta wants to give Nastia a “gimme” present, which I think she’s going to do if Nastia just gets through that bar routine with a dismount at Trials.

A year ago I would have bet ASac to make this team over Aly – unfortunately that damn injury has cost her. You can’t have two non-bar workers (let’s face it, if it weren’t for the AA Aly would not be doing bars at all…and it looks like Gabby is being prepped for that second AA spot anyways) on a five-member team, especially if bars is your weakest event.

  4. brainy Says:

Anyone have recent info/update on Maroney & her injury from last weekend?

    • sanitynmotion Says:

      I don’t…

    • Catherine Says:

Nope but if you check out her twitter she seems to not be allowed have her phone much. Kyla Ross and someone else tweeted her to get well soon. It comes across more that she’s resting up as a precaution (I heard somewhere that if you get concussion but don’t lose consciousness it’s recommended to rest for a week and not train during that time) and not that she is actually still suffering.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I remember Aaron Rogers got a concussion and he couldn’t play the next game – I think he had a week off or something. He didn’t lose consciousness either.

    • doughnut sundae Says:

You probably know as much as we do. McKayla’s nose collided with her spotter’s wrist/hand, after rebounding from a fall that echoed throughout Chaifetz arena. She was probably whisked away to Washington University Medical Center and School of Medicine (Wash U is just a stone’s throw away from Saint Louis University) for a preliminary diagnosis. That her injury petition was accepted so speedily is frightening… Anyway, she returned to the gym last Wednesday.

      • Dee Says:

She probably isn’t allowed to do much at all right now with a concussion…makes me nervous for Olympic trials.

Her nose collided with her spotter’s wrist/hand? You mean the person that was standing miles away from her when this happened was actually “spotting”? I still cant get my mind around why noone was able to grab her.

      • doughnut sundae Says:

“Don’t let something as silly as brain damage get in the way of Olympic training!”

Though Marta may not have said it verbally, this was undoubtedly her edict. I hear brain injuries can take months to assess, let alone treat. But poor McKayla has only enough time to be functional. In 10 days she will need to be Olympic caliber or (very) close to it.

No one was expecting Catgirl to fall flat on her back – not even her coach. When he realized things had gone awry, Author tried to intervene, but by that time McKayla was on the rebound.

I know what you’re thinking: “Who cares about Maroney, is Author OK?”

Good question. He was the victim here. McKalya’s nose attacked him!

    • terrigymfan Says:

They posted the following update today on the USA Gymnastic’s website:

June 19, 2012 — At the 2012 Visa Championships, McKayla Maroney suffered a minor nasal fracture and a mild concussion following a missed landing during the warm-ups prior to the final senior women’s session. Since then, Maroney, her parents and coach have been working closely with several physicians, including Dr. Larry Nassar, the U.S. Women’s National Team doctor. Maroney has returned to the gym and her progress is being closely monitored.

      A quote from McKayla Maroney
“My doctors and coaches are working together to find the balance between recovery and my wanting to get back into the gym and prepare for the Olympic Trials. My family and I appreciate all of the well wishes and support from my fans, friends, and teammates.”

That almost sounds like thinks aren’t progressing as smoothly or quickly hoped.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

You’re right; I’m not liking the way that sounds. I’m sure the doctors are recommending that she not exercise the way she normally does for at least a week – gymnastics is high impact so who knows what’s going on. She has probably lost at least a week of full-on training but it could be good for her so she can rest her body.

If this were Kyla, Marta would totally use it as an excuse to leave her off the team and place her as an alternate. I’m wondering how important that vault EF gold medal will be. I guess we’ll find out in two weeks…

ASac should be seeing this though as a huge window of opportunity. Work on that FH double, ASac!

      • JAS4 Says:

I think for Alicia to make the team she would need a floor better than McKayla by trials or she would need the FHS Double which if Alicia did with he usual form she could possibly score high 16s but if she had both I think she’d be on the team for sure unless Marta does what Marta does best

      • terrigymfan Says:

Mckayla’s cinch gold on vault EF would be important to me because it might be the only gold we get!

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I totally agree. It’s the only “in the bag” gold…I’m only scared because Marta keeps saying “you have to show consistency in more than one event” but maybe she’s just saying that.

I really don’t think anyone on the US will win an individual apparatus gold except Maroney. The only way that would happen is if one or two people have major mistakes. I don’t see Aly winning gold on floor. At all. She has horrible form and at the Olympics it’s just as much about the dance as it is about the tumbling. At least that’s my thoughts considering Nastia scored the same as Shawn on floor even though Shawn’s floor was WAY more difficult.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Aly could medal but unless someone else falls she won’t win.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I still think Aly could potentially medal on floor but I don’t think it will be scoring a 15.8 though

      • terrigymfan Says:

I may be wrong but I think Marta is going to put Mckayla on the team for her vaulting skill alone unless her injury is more serious than we know. It is just not in Marta’s makeup not to be telling these girls they need to work on something. That is about the only thing I do agree with as far as they way Marta does things.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I’m still holding my team as Aly, Jordyn, Gabby, Mckayla, Kyla. Anyone else (unless there’s injury) I’ll be either shocked, angry, or both. 🙂

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I didn’t say Aly wouldn’t likely win a medal on floor…I just don’t think she’ll take home the gold. Which let’s face it – is the only thing people really care about (gold medals). Sad but true.

You never hear about Shawn’s silver-medal performance on floor – and we only hear of Nastia winning silver on UB because “she got robbed” – but that’s what Tim says, and Tim is a moron.

      • JAS4 Says:

I agree I don’t think it would be the gold possibly silver or most likely bronze but I know Jordyn’s floor doesn’t have as much difficulty as Aly’s floor but when she hits like she did on night one of Nationals her floor is pretty good too

      • terrigymfan Says:

I heard Tim was so dumb that he had his gold medal from ’84 bronzed. (i’ve been waiting for an opening to say that silly joke.)

      • elitefan Says:

As a typical overzealous med student, I looked up concussion guidelines when the injury first happened…it sounds like a Grade 2 concussion because of the no loss of consciousness and the week off recommendation. It sounds to me like her coaches are doing a good job of playing it safe and making sure she’s resting enough, since the fatigue can persist after the initial symptoms go away…and that she’s just frustrated by it since she wants to be training. But medically (from my not-quite-fully-trained standpoint, anyway), it sounds like everyone’s being responsible in making sure she doesn’t progress too quickly.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Thanks Doc:) Marta knows how valuable her vault is. If she is playing mind games with her then it just proves she should be fired.

      • terrigymfan Says:

It’s a good thing Bela isn’t coaching her. He would have screamed at her and called her a malingerer (outside the view of the cameras of course) and had her back out there doing vaults and flips right away.

  5. JAS4 Says:

    Anyone read Russian?

  6. catherine Says:

Nope, nor has demy which is pretty scabby.

    • Dee Says:

Seriously? No Demy and no Pavlova?! ugh.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah what happened to Demy? I thought she would have been a shoo-in this year…seems like now they just brushed her aside. What was the reasoning? I didn’t see an injury report or anything.

Her coach talked favorably about her too at one point…said she was the toughest worker in the gym. Seems like the tougher worker you are the more likely you’re to go down (hear that Bross?)

    • doughnut sundae Says:

Thirteen months ago, diminutive Dementyeva looked up to nearly everyone on her team. Now she sees its tallest member, Mustafina, practically eye to eye…

A growth spurt has poor Anna scrambling to regain her sense of balance and all of the skills that depend on it. Stop growing Anna! Stop it!

  7. Wha? Says:

    (That is all)

  8. sanitynmotion Says:

I believe these UB scores…meaning, I don’t think they’re over-inflated (at least not to the point the US scores had been at nationals). Mustafina and Komova and Grishina are going to more than make up for lack of vault on the team finals with their bars…especially if they all hit. And if two of the Russians do end up having the amanar…it’ll be tough for the US to make up in beam (especially if Aly is one of the beamers since she’ll be deducted big time for form) and floor.

Just a thought. I’m thinking if everyone hits this is Russia’s gold to lose. I kind of thought that originally…especially before Mustafina got injured.

  9. Exgymgurl Says:

Chellsie, Anna pavlova, progras, demintieva, and racea need to form a country get citizenship and petition to the Olympics

    • gymtruthteller Says:

That is a great idea. I always thought that Anna Pavlova should switch Countries for some respect. I am starting my own Country and taking gymnasts that don’t make their Olympic teams.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

LOVED Pogras. I was hoping she’d win the AA this Olympics…thinking maybe she’d have a vault or something. She’s the epitome of beautiful gymnastics (Anna Pavlova was great too)…

Was Pavlova the one who ran at the vault and then stopped but touched it at Worlds so they had to use her score of 0? I forgot who that was…

Too bad Vise can’t come out of retirement, I’d send her to this country too. And I keep getting a bad sensation about Kyla Ross…

      • Dee Says:

No, Pavlova got a 0 in the Beijing vault final because she went before the signal. I’m not sure who that was in ’03 that got them a 0, but I’m pretty sure it was not her.

I miss Porgras, as well. If you google post-retirement pictures of her, it is a little scary.

  10. Exgymgurl Says:

I think Kyla wil make it Nastia already knows she won’t and is just there to sell tickets. That interview i saw on aunt joyce she seems resigned…..Kyla’s great no matter who they give slot 5 to. I’d bet anything they name 5+3 alternates, someone gets hurt and they plug an alternate in… Or two…. With only five your three alternates become more crucial

    • gymtruthteller Says:

If she is resigned then why won’t she go away? She made a fool out of herself at Nationals. Yet she still wants to go to Trials? I can’t watch her talk. She is such a self entitled bitch that I just can’t bring myself to watch her interviews anymore.

      • doughnut sundae Says:

If Marta’s ‘favorites’ – a girl long on risk and another short on ability – can be fast tracked to Olympic Trials, the message to the rest is clear: “Get with the program or you will be blackballed like Chellsie Memmel.”

Obviously Marta needs her girls to keep the rest from becoming too complacent. Nastia is way too savvy to do sports comedy for free. I’m sure there is a political payday ahead.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

So basically, by “getting with the program” you have to be a Marta pet or all else fails.

I still don’t understand why Marta favors Nastia. Like Chellsie, she’s been skipping out on the camps.

Nice note on the sports comedy/political pay day. I’m thinking that will be being named as an alternate and getting an Olympic medal for free so Shannon can no longer claim she’s a 7-time Olympic medalist.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I am pretty sure alternates don’t get medals at the Olympics.

      • JAS4 Says:

Marta would probably have her one of those replica medals made to give to Nastia and say she had more medals than Shannon or I could see Marta forcing one of the girls on the actual team to give up their medal to Nastia and giving them the replica

      • gymtruthteller Says:

        ha.lol I love it

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I could totally see it happening lol she would probably try to force Jordyn or Kyla since they aren’t favorites but it would probably be Kyla because I doubt Geddert would go for that or either she’d con one of her favorites into giving Nastia their medal by promising them all kinds of junk lol

      • JAS4 Says:

That wouldn’t surprise me at all

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Good. Still confused about the whole Ana Li thing I guess.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

The really messed up part is Alicia thinks she deserved that medal. What a stupid biatch she is.

      • JAS4 Says:

That seems to be a reoccurring thing in USA gymnast lol

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah in no way, shape, or form did she do anything to help those girls win gold. She actually only took from them the recognition they deserved because everyone was so focused on the “drama” of ASac getting hurt right beforehand.

I saw on Wikipedia though that one of Shannon’s world medals was given to her even though she didn’t compete due to injury, I need to look into that and see if that’s credible.

Either way, if you didn’t even compete it sure beats me how you could have won. In swimming, you can “help” a relay get to the final heat by racing during quals/semis, but if you are not part of that final itself, you don’t get a medal. Like what Mike Phelps did in 2004 for the butterfly heat of the medley relay – he ended up letting his teammate race it, and that teammate got the gold medal, not Phelps.

It just doesn’t happen, and shouldn’t happen – seems to only happen in women’s gymnastics!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Shannon competed in compulsories at the 94 team worlds then she went home. Nunno did not want her to go to that meet and USA-gymnastics threatened him that she needed to be there so he said she would do compulsories. That year she went to the GWG and Nationals within a few weeks of each other and was exhausted. Worlds was only a few weeks after that so he wanted her to stay home and rest.

She technically did not compete in the optionals but she did compete in compulsories which qualified the team to finals. She earned her medal. They would have qualified with out her but it still mattered. That was the time she over swung the bar and did an extra swing and the stupid Romanian coach ran around screaming they were giving special treatment to the world champ. He of course missed the joke of a 9.950 Milo got on floor.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

Nastias holding out for the women’s rogaine endorsement…..that’s why she’s going to trials, that and proactive

      • JAS4 Says:

I’m waiting for Nastia to take over Tim’s job if I had to choose between the two I’d actually have to say Tim lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

  11. Catherine Says:

No, the girl who ran at the vault and touched it was Ekaterina Kramarenko at 2007 worlds. It lost Russia the gold and took them out of medals. Ultimate brain lapse, she could of course have gone again if she hadn’t touched it.

Pavlova ran before the green light in her vault in 2008. Extremely controversial that they went ahead and zeroed it.

  12. JAS4 Says:

Chinese have one Amanar so far

  13. Dee Says:

Update on Maroney. Which, in typical USAG style, really tells us nothing.

    • terrigymfan Says:

I saw that Dee. It actually almost sounds a little scary like things are not going as well as had been expected. I sure hope not because I think we need her on vault for the team, and also need her almost cinch individual gold medal which might be the only goldwe get. Plus I just love her personality!

      • Dee Says:

I like her a lot, too, but this is scary. A coach at the gym I am at got a concussion from spotting and he was out for 2 weeks…as in 2 weeks of not being in the gym, no spotting, no tv screens, nothing. He kept having symptoms for a really long time, so when I heard Maroney had a concussion this close to Trials I became really nervous. This was just poor timing and I have no idea how she can resume full training in time to be prepared for the Trials…I really hope she can and it’s not as bad as we think/they are making it seem.

  14. JAS4 Says:

    Chinese team

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Kind of surprised about Huang since she’s relatively inconsistent…I was totally expecting China to throw in a surprise girl here and there since they typically do that. Like SURPRISE! She was 12 last year but now she’s 16!!!!

I wonder if Yao is recovered yet – she’ll be their best bet for the AA final for sure. None of these girls can do an amanar, right?

Kind of sad Jiang Yuyuan is not on the team (WHY can’t they replace her with Huang?)…and what happened to that Wu girl?

Sui Lu was rock solid on beam and floor last year. I predict she’ll take one of those titles home.

      • Jenna (@evrlngwatrfalls) Says:

Hi long time lurker on this blog posting for the first time. I follow Chinese gymnastics so I’ll give you an update. Things don’t really look that good for China, they’ll be lucky if they manage to pull off a bronze. I think Yao’s recovered, but she only competed bars in the last internal test (maybe to protect herself idk?). Huang just successfully landed an amanar, but it’s Huang…doubt it will be very consistent. The reason why Jiang isn’t on the team yet (sad as it is) is that she’s still doing really watered down routines and has been pretty inconsistent as of late. When Huang hits, she can pull off a big score (emphasis on WHEN she hits lol). Wu Liufang’s also been inconsistent (you can say that about most of the girls except Yao, Sui, and Deng) and can only be used on events China’s already deep in. She also fell really badly on her neck at nationals doing a beam dismount, so that probably rattled her confidence even more. Deng’s on the team because she got her DTY back (I don’t think Jiang has) and can also be used on beam and possibly floor if needed). She also won the Chinese Nationals with her consistency. So yeah. I’m guessing the 5th spot will go to He Kexin, even though she’s only usable on one event and doesn’t often hit. Kind of sucks, but China’s actually really weak on bars this time around. Yao’s pretty much the only one who consistently hits. Also, China’s form on ub seems to be going downhill. Beam is their strongest event this quad.

Anyways, it’ll be a rough Olympics for China, no matter who they put in the last place, especially when Russia, the U.S, and Romania are particularly strong. China seems to be in a place where the old guard is aging too much, but the younger one’s can’t take their place quite yet. But yeah. Just wanted to give an update for those who don’t follow Chinese gymnastics.

Thanks Jenna for the info. I love China for taking all of Nastia’s gold medals. Actually I have always loved China from Li Li to Mo Huilan through to my girl Jiang Yuyuan and I still have high hopes she will make that team. He is too inconsistent and she cannot back up any events.

Huang reportedly has an Amanar now so that’s probably why she is on the team

Haha yeah watching Nastia’s face after He took the gold was pretty amusing. I hope Jiang makes it too. Never cared for He Kexin’s bars (Yang Yilin all the way) and Tan Sixin makes me have a heart attack every time she begins to do a routine. Actually, Chinese gym fans probably all have really high blood pressure from all the inconsistent athletes. China needs an Aly Raisman.

Thanks Jenna – I was really hoping team China would have a surprise this year…oh well.

I am a fan of Sui Lu. I think she’ll bring home something. If only she could do bars and vault…

Yeah Nastia’s face after her score was posted next to the “2” made everything worth it. I was so happy she didn’t win gold…people still say she was robbed but the person who was robbed was Yang and Tweddle.

I like He but I like all the Chinese gymnasts except Huang who I find grossly overrated. Tan is beautiful, when she hits.

The only Chinese gymnast I can’t find something nice to say about is Huang.

      • Jenna (@evrlngwatrfalls) Says:

Yeah Tan’s beam is gorgeous, especially her leaps. I really liked her old floor routine, but now she uses music (I think used by Lordache) that really doesn’t suit her. It’s really sad that it she’s gone downhill consistency-wise from a year ago.

I hope Jiang makes the team but going for it with He and hoping for the best might be the way to go. Tan scares me.
