I am exhausted

I don’t usually get stressed over sports that aren’t baseball but I can’t tell you just how stressed out I have been over the last week and a half I can’t imagine what the gymnasts ere going through. This is tough.

I sit here watching Nastia Liukin screw up left and right getting a free pass to Nationals and I can’t help but think about how hard it must have been for Chellsie to sit there timing beam. She should have been on that beam given the chance for redemption. Instead Nastia gets a literal free pass to the Olympic Trials on name alone and all Chellsie got was a damn stop watch she can’t keep.

Then I think of Nastia and her arrogance. She could not hit her 6.5 set either day at Nationals yet she mentions an upgrade for a Trials she hasn’t even earned the right to compete at. The longer she stayed in the competition the worse her gymnastics got and for her to even want a spot at Trials kind of makes me sick to my stomach.

I am a known Nastia hater but I was scared for her safety her first night on bars. I thought she was going to kill herself with that routine. My stomach was a mess for twenty minutes after but there she sits, just a day later smiling like she earned that spot at Trials.

Anyone else would have bowed out gracefully. When all is said and done my impression of Nastia only got worse by the way she acted at Nationals. The self entitlement. The attitude. That is what I am going to remember about her entire career.

I know it’s not just me because I read the comment section but Gabby Douglas gets more annoying by the day. Maybe its me. I am more find of gymnasts that work hard and don’t feel the need to boost to the world, “All eyes are on me,” she said. “I’m going to do this thing and I’m going to do it up.” for attention. The arrogance Nastia has is finding a new body to possess.

Do we even need to discuss the judging? From Nastia on beam and bars to Gabby on every event. I think these girls are in for a huge awakening at the Olympics.

The worst part of this blog is it didn’t start with Jordyn Wieber, the 2012 National AA Champion. Instead we discuss the cockyness of Gabby Douglas and the judges having their heads up their butts. We discuss Chellsie Memmel being screwed over and Nastia being given a free pass, Something even her biggest fanatics can’t even excuse away any more. (I was wrong. Marta can excuse it away. Speechless here. Just speechless Thanks Jas for the article)

A lot of stuff is ending up in spam these days so if your comments don’t show up that is what probably happened. Just let me know and I will check. Oh and let me tell you how much I love my spam filter. It is awesome:)

Chellsies latest tweet…. Disappointed…. I think we all are #shityourdadsays #martasprincesses #coolhairbumpits. Go geralyn stack eaton!!! Funniest tweet is bekah recommending Carly Patterson petition to trials with three weeks of bars training

  3. Exgymgurl Says:

I think we’re all sad… And exhausted… It’s totally unfair if two weeks makes such a difference why did you refuse Chellsie knowing Nastia was injured?

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I am not sad. I am mad. I am a revenge type of girl. Get mad, get even It kind of makes me want to get a twitter account:)

  4. love4gym Says:

I fell bad for Jordyn ..It’s truth she should be the one with all the attention but noo. People are focusing more in overscored gabby and free pass nastia 😦

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      True dat

    • as if Says:

Acutally, I think this might help Jordyn. Her coach said she was being bombarded with media. That is very distracting. Maybe with all the media now focused on Nastia and Gabby, she can just focus on training.

      • Sofia Says:

Yep, I agree, i can see Jordyn quietly (and without drama) kicking ass!

Do you guys think Chelsie can possibly be ok with this? Or must she act ok to protect her Dad’s gym and future business?

  5. Wha? Says:

Definately disappointed like all of you. It seemed like the girls were at a happy gala event instead of a serious competition. It’s gonna suck when Marta picks names over talent.Whatever happened to the good ol days when an Olympic team had at least 2 or 3 all-arounders? Now it’s 1 all-arounder and a bunch of “specialists”. I am a fan of Maroney though. Her vaulting is beautiful.
    Go Team Russia!

  6. Alex Says:

I really don’t think Nastia will be on the team. Maybe she gets a free pass to Trials as the reigning AA champ, but there’s no way she will be on that team. I don’t buy that she’s going to put together a medal-worthy bars routine in just a few weeks. If she had until January, I’d be all on board….but there’s just no way.
My prediction is that there are no repeat Olympians on this team. The only one I could potentially see is Sacramone, but I think even she is a long shot. And yeah, Gabby drives me nuts. Every time they showed her mom I wanted to throw something.
I just don’t see why USAG is pushing her as our golden girl….I don’t think that Jordyn has much of a personality, but she’s much easier to stomach. I do like Ross, but I don’t think this year is her time yet.

    • terrigymfan Says:

I think Ross is just about a lock. The only question is the fifth spot. Will it be Maroney or somebody else like Alicia? I still betting on Maroney but it’s not a sure thing. If Nastia makes the team I am going to start watching female bowling.

      • JAS4 Says:

I think Nastia thinks she will have an EF Gold bar routine ready by the Olympics

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She does.lol she really thinks she deserves this. This is why I cannot stand her.

      • JAS4 Says:

Khorkina has been retired for like 8 years and has a kid and I’m pretty sure she could still beat Nastia on Bars

      • Biyatch Says:

At this point ALICIA could probably beat Nastia on bars. Lol.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

M*ther f*ck…seriously…I haven’t gone on the FB page but there should be RAGE about this. It’s so obvious.

Needless to say though Nastia does not make this team. If she does, I’m one-upping Terri. I’m going to watch female curling.

      • Sofia Says:

Female basket weaving…we could start a fan club…heck, we could start the sport!!

      • Exgymgurl Says:

If its special olympics sure Nastia would win a gold medal….

      • terrigymfan Says:

I like Sofia’s idea that we start our own sport. We could run it like USAGymnastics – just a few of us calling all the shots and woe to anyone who crosses us. We have to elect a leader though. Who is going to be our Marta?

    • JAS4 Says:

I wonder if Marta is over scoring Gabby to push Jordyn into breaking so she can make room for her favorites I hope Jordyn doesn’t fall for it I could see Marta over scoring Gabby into first place at trials

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I really have this feeling Gabby is being overscored so her confidence goes up. Marta feels like if she’s confident going into the Olympics, she’ll hit. Messing with the scores doesn’t benefit anyone. I’m with GTT these USA girls are in for a shock…

I can go on, but 15.8 for Aly on floor. Nearly 9.0 in execution. Not gonna happen in London, yo. Even though her tumbling kicks butt. This is just one lame example of the scoring issues.

    • Gymsurfer Says:

People come on, the Olympics are all about sponsors and ratings and the way you get them is by featuring athletes who are ATTRACTIVE. Nastia and Sacramone are considered hot. The others? Memmel? Wieber? Not so much. They don’t give a damn about the talent. It’s all about the money!

  7. terrigymfan Says:

GTT, I’ve said before that I have not followed gymnastics closely for awhile until this year. When I started reading your blog about 3 months ago and saw all the Nastia bashing going on, I admit I sort of thought, “Oh, that’s just the typical bashing of the person on too. Then when she did decent on beam at Classics I thought that even more. The last three days, though, have convinced me you and all the others have been right all along. I can’t say I hate her exactly but her being passed first to Nationals and then to Trials is outrageous. She really stunk the joint up the last 3 days. She also is totally out of shape. Whoever heard of an Olympic level athlete not starting to train on 1/2 of his or her entire area if expected Olympic performance until one and half months before the Olympics? And then for the entire gym world, including Marta, to act like that’s okay? She does have a sense of entitlement and is being selfish. Any athlete with self-respect would bow out gracefully now. I would be embarrassed to show up at trials and have to look all the girls who actually earned it in the face.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

The reason I cannot stand Nastia besides her stuck up attitude and the way she treats people that beat her is because this is how she has always been.

I don’t blame her for being pissed at herself for the way she competed but what I do blame her for is thinking she doesn’t need a dismount at the NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIPS but still deserves a chance to compete at Trials. She really thinks she deserves this. Both her and her father. It’s disgusting.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I didn’t notice anyone but Bross talking to her all championships. Bridget and Alicia were out to dinner but their BFF Nastia wasn’t. It makes you wonder if something is going on. I am sure they act nice to each others faces but I know how Alicia Sacramone is, she does not appreciate Nastia getting a free pass when she has worked her ass off to come back from injury. I don’t think any of these girls realize just how close they were to losing their spot on the Olympic team if Nastia had hit.

      • JAS4 Says:

If she hits at trials one of their spots could still be in danger but even if she doesn’t hit or do a dismount I could see Marta still putting her on the team saying she’d be ready by the Olympic like how Marta said in the interview after Nationals that the two weeks before trials would be enough time for Nastia to get it together

      • terrigymfan Says:

It’s also obvious to me she hasn’t trained worth a lick even for the short time she has been doing it. Let’s add lazy to the adjectives describing her. Too much of the good life I think.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Too much promoting the Olympics on NBC.com

  8. Christina Says:

    I hear you GTT!
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here’s a quote from Gabby:

“All eyes are on me,” she said. “I’m going to do this thing and I’m going to do it up.”

    • Dee Says:

Can someone please work with that girl on how to SPEAK PROPERLY. Either that or she just needs to keep her mouth shut.

  9. nero Says:

I love how Gabby falls and everyone and I mean everyone (fans, the trio, Gabby herself) actually say it was a ‘good’ thing because it showed how she could bounce back from it

You know where you can’t bounce back from a fall on beam? At the Olympics

Then you have Jordyn who misses a bars routine here and there and it’s a ‘disaster’ and ‘she can’t be trusted on bars during TF’ and ‘Maroney is going to have to stay home for a bars specialist so we don’t have to use Jordyn’

I hate gym fans sometimes. Gabby, Komova, Musty can have these wobbly, zero connections, falls on beam and floor and it’s ok because they’ll peak at the Olympics, but Jordyn never seems to get the benefit of the doubt.

I would never wish for Gabby to fall, I just hope Jordyn can have her beam connections and vault landing down come trials and Olympics.

    • Dee Says:

The only time I actually cheered was when she fell off beam because I couldnt stand the thought of her being National Champion. GAG.

I dont see what all the hype is about…sure her bars are good, but why would you put someone on an olympic team that falls in every meet? Or makes stupid mistakes in every meet?

I dont ever, ever, remember being this annoyed over an athlete..and I’ve followed gymnastics my entire life.

      • Christina Says:

Perfect word to describe Gabby- ANNOYING
You can tell none of the other gymnasts like her either! But everyone loves Alicia 🙂 she has the best personality of any gymnast haha! I really admire her and her hard work

      • terrigymfan Says:

What bugged me about Gabby’s fall is that she first grabbed the bar. It looked like she could have easily recovered but then she said screw it and jumped off. Showed immaturity in my view. She should have gotten separate deductions for grabbing the bar and the fall in my opininion but I bet she didn’t.

  10. Kyla Fan Says:

Marta has pretty much already picked a team, these comps (classics, nationals, trials) are pretty much BS for “selection” to the olympic team. Perhaps Marta might kick you off if you fail dramatically but I think she has already picked the team in her mind at least she just wants to see who (if anyone) will crack under pressure.

I don’t think Nastia will be on it unless she can MASSIVELY improve her bars in the next few weeks, which I think is highly doubtful at this point. Really don’t know why she actually thought that a few months would be enough time to be ready??? Its either arrogance or stupidity take your pick.

It looks like Valeri is much more interested in Nastia, and I feel sorry for Rebecca Bross. I don’t think she has any hopes of making the team either. I don’t think she would score well at the olympics on bars- I know its not her fault but her form really doesn’t look that great and the way she sickles her feet REALLY annoys me and its really very unsafe and should be discouraged. Her Beam routine was a mess as well. I would rather see Anna Li or Bridget in the Bars/Beam specialist spot.

I personally hope Kyla is on the team, she is a solid performer and lovely to watch, although I wish someone would give her a decent floor routine with regards to both tumbling and choreography which are both sub-par at the moment. She has lovely lines and I’m sure some better choreography could be found for her. I am a bit disappointed because previous gym-max elites (Ivana, Shantessa) had pretty decent floor routines with interesting choreo at least. I also hope she can get her Amanar back which would give her much better hopes in the AA.

I think Gabby is a lock for the team at this point, for her bars alone. She is pretty much the only gymnast with a highish start value on this event in the US at the moment.

Jordan and Aly are locks as well, it’s a shame they haven’t gotten the attention they deserve and have been overshadowed by Nastia’s ridiculous comeback attempt and the hype surrounding Gabby Douglas who was gifted at nationals. I don’t know why everyone is being so negative about Jordan, her bars are OK and she is great on all the other events. To me, she is pretty similar in style (or lack of depending on your opinion I guess) to Shawn Johnson and everybody seemed to love her…

With regard to the overscoring and people implying Marta tells the judges how to judge, that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. In LGPB Bela even admits that back in romania (in his time) they would overscore the top athletes to boost their confidence. No doubt Marta also wants to put the pressure on Jordan and Aly, this seems to be a favoured tactic of the Karolyi’s.

Will be interested to see who’s on the final team my guess currently is Wieber, Raisman, Ross, Douglas and Maroney and they’ll just have to use Wieber on Bars for the TF (she’s really not THAT bad on bars).

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree on the whole using Jordyn for bars thing in team finals. She BEAT Gabby at last year’s worlds on bars. Her bars were awesome at this nationals too – she scored in the low 15’s both times. Her start value on UB is only two or three tenth’s below Gabby’s start value.

Nastia needs to be done. What a joke. And I hope Bross gets a different coach or calls out Valerie on his sh*t. WHY they use that Patterson when 9/10 she fails is beyond me.

      • Dee Says:

I have to close my eyes when she does that Patterson. I am petrified to watch it.

I noticed throughout the entire meet that Valeri literally ignored his other two athletes and spent all of his time with his daughter. I get it, that’s her dad, but he has TWO OTHERS to pay attention to that he is COACHING. That dynamic in the WOGA corner was just strange.

  11. sanitynmotion Says:

I meant to put my previous post here…sorry for the repeat. Please forgive me GTT. 🙂

Let’s just toss the scores aside – we can find many points of stupidity. OMG. I could have scored these girls more accurately AND I’M NOT AND NEVER HAVE BEEN A GYMNAST.

That being said, I think the placement was mostly fair. Jordyn deserved the win (no major mistakes), and let’s be honest – Gabby has immense talent. Her bars are beautiful, she has great form, she has great lines – and I’d much rather see her on this team than Nastia. She also has a lot of difficulty. While her and Aly are on par with the difficulty points, Aly’s bars are a lot worse than Gabby’s worst event (when she hits). Which I’m still not sure which one is truly her worst. She would have a great beam if she hadn’t fallen. Her floor is great except the choreo and the music. I thought she had a great floor night 2. I agree, her beam was overscored for sure. But so was Jordyn’s on night 2. And her vault had some steps but she got it around and had great form in the air – Aly’s vault didn’t.

I think Gabby is good for Jordyn too because Jordyn’s a fighter and SHE DOES NOT WANT TO LOSE. Maybe Marta is trying to set this all up and play mind games with both Jordyn and Gabby – I could see that. She wants Jordyn to feel like there’s a fire under her a$$ and she wants Gabby to gain a (false) sense of confidence so that she will hit every time at the Olympics. Who knows. The whole Marta fix is stupid and is going to bite her in the a$$ – AGAIN – come London. She needs to stop this crap. It does nobody any good.

I hope Jordyn, Gabby, and Kyla all have the chance to compete for the AA in London. Aly’s had her chance twice at worlds and consistently craps out on bars. She’ll never make podium in London unless at least two, maybe three people make major mistakes.

I also have a bad feeling about Maroney. I almost wish she’d injured herself on bars/beam over floor. Now I’m sure Marta is worried she’ll either injure herself again on floor (the apparatus she NEEDS to prove she’s capable on) or can’t be counted on for more than one event and this will be her downfall. The door has been opened for ASac, for sure. Two solid beam sets in a row and I can see by the time Trials comes along she’ll have that rudi in check. Plus give her leg some more rest and maybe at the Olympics she’ll be able to win that individual gold.

If the team were Jordyn, Gabby, Kyla, Aly, and ASac this could be the 3 up 3 count:

    V: Aly/Gabby/Kyla; Jordyn; ASac
    UB: Jordyn; Kyla; Douglas
BB: Aly/Kyla; ASac; Jordyn – or give Jordyn some rest here and make it Aly; ASac; Kyla
    FX: Gabby; Jordyn; Aly

ASac can fill in on FX if she has it by then – but I doubt Marta would risk that for team finals.

Sigh…I’m still really pulling for Maroney though.

Damn this sport. I love it and hate it at the same time!

    • nero Says:

As much as I want Asac on the team, I really can’t see it happening unless she has her double. She wouldn’t be used on beam over Aly, Kyla and Jordyn and most likely wouldn’t be used on floor. So in that sense she’s just the same as Maroney, only Maroney is a 99% gold medal and is a bars backup

Maroney’s vault score will counter Jo’s bar score, I’m not sure if Asac’s rudi can have that type of impact.

I don’t think Maroney’s accident put her out of the running on floor, shit happens, they took a chance on her at worlds and she rocked it. She hits two routines at trials and she’s got it!

      • Jeco Says:

Back to the selection process; early spring Queen Martha stated that all questionable athletes with any aspiration of making the team had to show two clean routines by April Camp- FAIL.. next two routines at Classics with some random score of 14 on each-FAIL… what will it be next???? Trials will come and Nastia will be given a workorder;”honey, show up in London, and please don’t forget your dismount”. I am all for rules, but let’s be real here???!! WTF??? it’s an embarrassment to every hardworking elite athlete out there!! Oh, and it’s also a matter of principle, if Team Liuken had some dignity they would gracefully withdraw from the Trials!! Maybe Terin Humphrey could get fired and Nastia could have her old job back?? Just thinking out loud!!
Finally; where the judges on crack??? OMG, it’s embarrassing!!!
Well, maybe not if we want to live in La-La-Land……

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I agree – if Maroney can hit two floor routines in a row, she has that spot. It just doesn’t seem likely though. I’m hoping. 🙂

    • Jessica Says:

I agree with most everything you are saying here.

On a strictly personal preference tip, I cannot stand Kyla Ross. I don’t know what it is about her…but she just bugs the crap out of me. Her routines are so blah…I just can’t see being anything special other than the lead off person whose scores get tossed on the first day. Her split leg bars drive me insane! Although, her leo on day two was outstanding. I hope to see that design again in London. 😛

Maroney is a one trick pony. And her trick is really really good. But again, with only 5 spots, can the US afford to take someone for just one event? I know they have done so before (Annia Hatch in 04 for exp.) But my money is on ASac whose beam is solid and I am hopefull her vaults will be as well. I know I’d rather have someone who has multiple events to rely on.

I have to admit I was a Nastia fan. I rooted for her over Shawn in Beijing. I coldn’t understand why all the hate on so many boards for so long. Then came this weekend. OMG

First off, I am sick of the pink. If this leo was her design, then she’ got a fine career ahead of her as a dog/cat clothing designer. Who the hell puts a rhinestone collar on athletic apparel? And the important bar routine….WTF? Now I can see why people feel the way they do b/c I am surely not a fan any longer.

      If I chose a team:

      Sloan or Ross

      • chris Says:

This is exactly how I feel about Ross. When she sticks her landings it brings me back to those recreational days when summer camp ooaches tell the kids to land in a “motorcycle”. She runs like a kid too.. I know this is her first year senior but she looks like an amateur gymnast, not one ready for the international stage. JMO

      • terrigymfan Says:

LOL. Nastia’s leo would look good on a poodle.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I know the second I saw that rhinestone collar I was like “Nastia must have designed that.” That in and of itself would make me switch coaches if I were Bross. No way would I dress myself in that crap.

And pretty much we can count Bross out. I can’t see her making this team AT ALL unless five people get injured. That patterson literally took her Olympic dreams away.

      • terrigymfan Says:

On Maroney, she’s almost a cinch to win gold in vault if she is on the team. To me that means she is more valuable than your typical one event gymnast. If she isn’t on the team we could realistically go away with no golds at all.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Is it bad that I almost kind of want that to happen…(especially if Nastia is on the team)…only because I want Marta fired and gone forever?

  12. terrigymfan Says:

I’ve never been a fan of Al Trautwig but I have to say he is the only one I could tolerate the last three days. He actually asked a few good questions of the other two only he never received a decent response. I think Friday night he asked the other two if it was a “concern that Nastia is out-of-shape.” Tim and Elfie didn’t even respond. Hello, Tim and Elfie? I would think it would be a concern that an athlete at this late state cannot even complete a 45-second routine without exhausting herself. They did keep saying that whether she had the necessary endurance to complete the return is a “question,” but I think Al’s question was more directed at whether you should be concerned about an athlete’s motivation/work ethic who was still out of shape at this late stage. Tim and Elfi won’t touch that question with a 10 foot pole.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I know I wanted to KILL Tim. I didn’t see night 1 really (just the routines, not the commentary) but night 2 there were times where I wish I could have just punched him (he has that face, too). How stupid is it too that they have to say “Olympic gold medalist Tim Daggett” every time they speak of him? LAME. Guess that’s what Nastia will be in a few years. Bleck.

I guess if Tim and Elfie want to keep their jobs, they can’t say anything about Nastia being out of shape. If it were Kyla they’d be all over it.

I was personally shocked that Nastia would a) ADMIT she’s only been doing bars for a week (wha???!!! that’s the ONE EVENT where Team USA needs you!) and b) looked so out of shape she couldn’t even do a dismount over a level 5. Why not even a double tuck off? The best was on day 1 where she hit the other bar while doing her layout dismount! If Marta clearly said she wanted to see Nastia get through a bar routine, and she didn’t, two times in a row,HOW did she just make it to Trials? I really doubt she’ll be able to make it through, much less UPGRADE, by Trials.

I hope she goes to Trials and really makes an a$$ of herself. For Chellsie’s sake. She deserves to leave her career in the same trash bag as Chellsie was forced to leave hers. So sad.

      • terrigymfan Says:

They should modify Tim Daggart’s introduction to say “Olympic gold-medalist at a boycotted Olympics.”

      • sanitynmotion Says:

They should do that with Mary Lou too!

      • terrigymfan Says:

Sandy, do you know when Nastia started training again? She supposedly made the decision to come back last fall, but at the American Cup in early March she sounded like she had just started going back to the gym. She’s blaming things on a sore shoulder now but even if she had started training seriously last fall she would be in a lot better shape than she is now. Sounds to me like she and Valerie hatched some plan that would supposedly get her into Olympic shape in about 3 months, with minimal effort on her part. Obviously that is absurd. These girls train intensely for years to be in Olympic shape. And of course it takes even longer for an older girl to get in shape and avoid injury while doing it. This “I can take a shortcut to Olympic glory” is what is so sickening about this.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I figured she would have been hitting the gym right after her “comeback” announcement that took place just after the younger girls of Team USA won world champs in 2011. 🙂 So – she’s had since October at least to get in the gym and put together a bar routine. Why she would wait one week before nationals to do this is beyond me. What has she been doing then???

I think you’re right about the whole “3 month plan” thing. Ridiculous.

Now that she’s playing up this shoulder injury I’m wondering if she’s considering bowing out gracefully. At least some other people are waking up. The morons on FB were telling each other a couple weeks ago that Nastia had been showing up to camps and had verified her bars routine. Yeah, right – she didn’t even verify her beam routine!

If she gets an alternate spot that will make me ill but not as ill as if she makes the team. Marta never uses her alternates anyways, even if half the team is injured she won’t use them. It’s just sad because she’s probably taking that medal replica away from Bross, her own teammate.

      • Casc Says:

“I hope she goes to Trials and really makes an a$$ of herself. For Chellsie’s sake. She deserves to leave her career in the same trash bag as Chellsie was forced to leave hers. So sad.”

Well, to be hones I was watching very carefully this whole case with Chellsie and there is one thing, that I didn’t see: she never said “My career is over, I’m retiring”. She is healthy now, and she still may strike back (not now of course, but there are Worlds in 2013, right?). Anyway, my point is, she never said she was “done” with gymnastics, so maybe we (especially her fans) shouldn’t say she did (even if for most people it looks like this, but well… when somebody doesn’t say something directly, there is usually a reason).

  13. Alex Says:

Interesting. Nastia’s playing up the shoulder injury:
She confirms what I was thinking- she didn’t allow herself enough time because she didn’t think it would take so long.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

She should know better. Of course it would take so long. She should have started her comeback when the other girls from ’08 started theirs – would have had plenty of time then!

The rumor about Nastia being in the gym was a hell of a lot earlier then she is talking now. Either way she has her built in excuse

  14. terrigymfan Says:

I’m predicting Marta is going to make Nastia an alternate. Even she can’t justify putting Nastia on the team but bringing her along as an alternate will allow her to prance around and give interviews for ratings. Of course some more deserving gymnast is going to get screwed over because of it.

    • Alex Says:

I could see that. Nastia is good for ratings. And I agree that someone will lose the alternate spot because of it…probably Bross. 😦
However, we can’t be too upset about boosting ratings….general public interest is what gets us TV broadcast and all of the other things that come with mainstream sports. So while I hate the idea of it, I do understand…

    • doughnut sundae Says:

Look at it this way. The Laughable Liukins are doing the entire senior national team a huge favor – their comedy act is killing the competition.

“[Visa National Championships] was hilarious… I couldn’t stop laughing!” – Andrei Rodionenko

DISCLAIMER: Any similarity to a Russian national team coach is merely coincidental.

  15. Biyatch Says:

Saw the article about the shoulder injury too. Made me wonder if they are setting her up for the shoulder injury to “get worse” and gracefully step away. Thats the only reason I can understand them leading off the article with the phantom injury that wasn’t discussed until she ate it 3 out of 4 times.

Even if she didn’t start her comeback until her announcement in October I don’t get how she’s so unprepared. Yes, Alicia started in better shape, but Alicia couldn’t do a simple backflip until FEBRUARY and she looked so much better then Nastia on beam.

I like Alicia and Nastia annoys the crap out of me but I feel that its telling how the other athletes act around them. EVERYONE wanted to support Alicia, even Grace who is supposed to be a WOGA Nastia crony was angling to get in to congratulate her. Alicia seems like she’s having fun with training and competing and its hard not to want to get behind her. The moment between her and Bridget was probably one of the best televised moments and something that was so obviously not for the cameras. THEN just to make it better Alicia and Bridget stand there and start cheering on Amanda Jetter, someone with no chance of making the team, and actually seem invested in her routine. Nastia sits in the corner and sulks.

Kyla was awesome day 2. So were Aly and Alicia. Anna Li’s bars were freaking awesome (even though I’m not an Anna Li fan). Jordyn’s wobbles on beam were a HUGE deal, but Gabby’s fall was okay because she got to prove how she responds. Gabby isn’t getting anywhere close to a beam at TF. All the terrible trio (although I agree Al was way less annoying but it could just be in comparison) could talk about was Gabby and Nastia. It makes me sick how they pick their sweethearts and run with it. The funny thing is Gabby is the least publicly marketed athlete on the team. Jordyn, Aly, Alicia and Nastia are the most publicized. And except for Subway, not much for NAstia. Jordyn has Kelloggs and P&G, Aly has Ralph Lauren and did the Vogue spread, Pierce Morgan, Alicia has P&G and under armour. Plus the Visa sponsorship. MAn even Shawn still has coke. Lol.

That was a long rant. But basically, Nastia needs to further “hurt her shoulder” getting the numbers in, find some class and step away.

    • Gymbee Says:

I was nodding along to this whole post. I noticed how all the girls wanted to be around Alicia, heck, EVERYONE did (the guy she made the Zumba comment to) and they were basically queuing to congratulate her. I think Alicia has matured a lot (obviously, she’s an adult now!) while Nastia is stuck in the mentality of the 2008 high school clique, sulking in a corner. Only ones who even talked to her were Becca and Valeri haha.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah Nastia and ASac used to be really close and cliquey. I can’t imagine how ASac has any more respect for her when she’s been on comeback mode for three years now and Nastia, three months. I’m sure there’s some major resentment there for all of them. They all know what’s going on.

    • Sofia Says:

Totally agree, Biyatch, about ASac, though I think the difference between Alicia’s obvious rock solid fitness and Nastia’s lack there of is the time invested, yes, but also, Nastia is not a naturally athletic body and ASac is…Nasita is naturally supple, but she is not athletic, so she should have come back even sooner, to slowly steadily develop a base level fitness, before even starting skills. This is the part that is so insulting..that she even imagined (her father too) that she could even be fit in three months, much less able to compete at this level.

Also, since USAG knows that her labrum is torn…um…is she worth taking to London??? Even if she had rocked a bars set with a huge start value perfectly with ya know, a dismount and the whole thing,at Nationals, how could they justify taking a gymnast that they know to be nursing an injury??? I guess if Nastia takes spot number five, one of the alternates is bound to get her moment, because even “saving her shouder” by not doing a proper dismount is no guarantee that an (unfit) gymnast isn’t going to further injure herself right out of play once she finally does her bars set full out.

  16. Wha? Says:

This has probably been said already, but we all know Nasty-ugh will make a retirement speech as soon as the Olympic team is named… once again taking the spotlight away from them and shining it on herself!

    • sanitynmotion Says:

I so hope at that point someone will call her out. And I also hope she does not get her FIG position back or anything else. She said she was going to school in NYC anyways in January. Just disappear/leave already.

  17. MacStabby Says:

I finally got to watch the first part, and can I just say how absolutely adorbs ASac and Bridgey were at the end? They were so happy and having a good time and cheering on other competitors. That’s so fun to watch, and makes me root for someone more than sulking in a corner. Of course, they both killed it, and Nastia biffed.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

As much as I dislike Nastia besides this Nationals her pissy bitch look never bothered me. She is different. In fact the over happy camera hogs are the type I cannot stand to watch. This is a sport. Smile when you are done.

      • Alex Says:

      • terrigymfan Says:

I like seeing a gymnast smile when she has performed a good routine so long as it looks genuine and unforced and inot playing to the camera. That is why I couldn’t stand Mary Lou’s smile. It looked so fake.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

You can smile after you hit but things like waving to the camera in the middle of a meet or the way Jonathon Horton acted in team finals in 2008 is just plain annoying.

      • Sofia Says:

I agree but has Nastia shown any leadership qualities at all? As a veteran, she ought to be expected (if she makes the team) to be a team player and encourage the other girls…I have never seen that from her. Now, she seems to need all her focus to keep herself from falling apart. She offered no support that i could see even to her own team mate Bross. Someone like ASac, brings more to the table than just her routines, and if Nastia goes, with only bars to offer (such as it is) she ought to have to get out of her own head and support the rest of the team. It was one thing, in 2008 when she contributed so much just by performing so well, but now, she needs to at least offer a team focused attitude, she ought not to be allowed to be a prima dona with only bars to do.

      • Gymbee Says:

Haha Sofia didn’t you see her interview after Worlds on how she “gave the girls a pep talk” that made them win gold? 😉

      • MacStabby Says:

Nastia’s pissy face always bothers me. There’s a concentration face, and then there’s bitchy. I know which side I think Nastia is on, at least for this competition.
Bridgey and ASac were finished for the night, did well, and were happy about it. Let it rain smiles and rainbows and puppy farts.

  18. JAS4 Says:

Why don’t they change the dismount she could get seriously hurt she almost never height or power to do that dismount she would do much better with a twisting dismount or a double tuck or pike

  19. doughnut sundae Says:

It is possible. But with a knee injury piled atop the usual list of (foot and ankle) ailments, it isn’t likely. The odds are stacked against her, so abandoning the Patterson for a simpler dismount seems like a no-brainer. Why hasn’t this happened?

    It’s obvious – her coach can’t read.

Poor Becca has become so acquainted with failure that she seems to walk onto the podium defeated, haunted by the inevitable – another botched attempt at a potentially crippling maneuver. I think it would have been better to give her a simpler dismount so that success could rebuild confidence and fuel her motivation to excel. America should be sending the Spetsnaz girl to London, not an athlete rep!

  20. sarah Says:

i was looking at gabby douglas results wondering how she does so well nationally but not internationally. At Visas she scored 60.650 and 61.050. Yet somehow at an international competition the highest she ever got is 57.6. (3 points is quite a lot difference) Just me or does that show how overscored she is in usa competitions.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She’s up graded but there is no way she is getting a 15 on that floor routine or a 14 with a fall

    • JAS4 Says:

While I do think Gabby has improved some recently I think her scores internationally would be in the 59s if she hit and if she had a fall internationally it would probably be closer to 57s or maybe 58s

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I think Gabby has improved a lot – and while I don’t think her beam should have been that high at nationals day 2 it spoke volumes that she was able to get back up after falling and nail the rest of the routine.

Gabby’s difficulty on beam is 6.4 (just one tenth less than Aly’s difficulty and actually two tenths higher than Weiber)…a fall is worth a point, right? So the highest she could get is 15.4 after that. Not sure what a “hand down” is worth – let’s say half a point. So we’re left with 14.9 had everything else been perfect. Then she had a missed connection with that fall, right? I think? So let’s just say that’s another 0.3…I’m totally guessing…so highest score 14.6. And then probably deduct at least .5 maybe .6 for other minor baubles or what have you…she “could have” scored in the 14’s but it’s very unlikely. Probably high 13’s.

Another way to look at it is D scores added up for all four apparatuses:

        Weiber – 25.1
        Aly – 25.4
        Gabby – 25.5
Ross – 24.4 – this is why it KILLS me Ross won’t upgrade floor….anyways…

So Gabby actually has the highest D scores of all of them. Four-tenths over Jordyn. If she hits, she’s more than likely to score in the 60’s. I think when she was getting 57’s she didn’t have these D scores and she was crashing her amanar, no?

      • JAS4 Says:

I don’t understand why Kyla won’t upgrade floor either that’s has Marta written all over it! But I don’t think international judges are going to score Gabby’s floor over a 15 her tumbling and leaps are good but the choreography is not so good if I were Jordyn I would try to add a few more tenths on little things like adding a twist to her bars dismount or adding in something on floor

      • sanitynmotion Says:

About Jordyn: I didn’t understand why she focused on upgrading beam so much. I hate the new combination she uses with her back full. You’re right about her bars – I guess she was having issues adding that twist though. Makes me appreciate SJ’s dismount even more if Jordyn can’t do ONE twist and SJ did TWO. I wish Jordyn would do the double layout too on floor; her floor D score is only 6.1 and Aly’s is 6.5.

About Aly: she needs that high 6.5 D value because her choreo and form sucks too. She does a single turn element, which is so level 4 or whatever. I mean, I can do a single turn and I’m not a gymnast.

About Gabby: I don’t know,…I don’t know her personality at all but if she’s the type that responds well to pressure (yes, she crapped out at last year’s nationals but has done so much better this year – and I’m thinking it might be she was just rushing herself before and not focusing enough), then I think she should be given the chance for that second AA spot. She has a better chance at podium if she hits than Aly does.

About Kyla: she’s not getting that second AA spot because of her floor. I hope her damn coaches and her are aware of that. And I still think Marta is telling her to not upgrade floor so she can have a window of opportunity to leave Kyla off the team for Nastia if Nastia comes to Trials and somehow gets through that bar routine.

      • JAS4 Says:

I really wish Gabby had gone to Jeselo instead of Pacific Rims so we would know how she scores internationally with her upgrades then I think we would have a better idea of how to conpare the top AAers
