Shawn Johnson

She won’t compete at Classics. She might not compete at Nationals. Can we end this facade that Shawn Johnson is currently still training for the Olympics?

When Shawn started this comeback I believe she had the best of intentions. That was 2011. This is 2012. I currently think differently.

The reason Shawn is pretending she is still in the gym is Nastia-esque. It’s more about this instead of this.

One of the blogs regulars has a different idea. “Sandy” thinks Shawn has something up her sleeve. That is another possibility but I somehow doubt it. Wouldn’t it be fun if Shawn skipped Classics and Nationals than showed up at Trials and finished top 3?

I still believe that Shawn started this comeback honestly. She certainly proved that by going to Pan Ams and nearly making the World team (where in any other year and any other head of the National team she very well could have been on the team) but somewhere in the middle of this she got lost. Either mentally or physically.

I really don’t think Shawn will skip Nationals and only compete at Trials. If she does that she might as well not even bother.

I really hope Shawn has something up her sleeve but if so they are doing a really good job of hiding it! I would think though that if she really just wanted to be secretive about her routines then why can’t she at least show up and do a DTY on vault she was doing that last year so it even if she does have her Amanar back it wouldn’t give anything away or show up and compete a watered down routine on one of the other events there shouldn’t be any reason for her not to at least compete one watered down event I kind of wonder if after the whole 6 week rehab for her knee she just had trouble getting it
back together or maybe she just doesn’t want all the hype like when everyone thought she would make the team for Worlds but then were disappointed when she didn’t or maybe she knows it’s pointless to go up against Nastia because she already knows who Marta will choose

  2. nero Says:

I don’t get the whole ‘secretive’ thing. What would be the point of hiding your routines until the last minute when we all know Marta values consistency?

If Shawn was hiding/saving herself by missing classics and Nats then successfully petitions to trials and shows up with difficult routines I fail to see the point. I highly doubt they would name someone who has shown they can hit at only one competition, especially considering her last comp wasn’t exactly filled with hit routines.

If she says it’s because her knee can’t handle it, then how would it be able to handle all the training and routines during the Olympics?

I don’t think the girls fighting for the 5th spot (Vega, Sloan, Finnegan, Maroney possibly, Bross) Sit around worrying about Shawn’s routines.

    • Exgymgurl Says:

Its secretive because they are the secret classics…. She has a book thats it thatsthe secret that and nastia not making the team either. Dont hate me for spoiling it for all y’all

    • Lauren H Says:

I don’t get the secrecy thing either, Nero. It’s really gotten under my skin, and I’ve given up on Shawn at this point. If she proves me wrong, more power to her, but I ain’t holding my breath…

The thing I really don’t get is if Shawn is so fragile that she has to save herself for a select few competition, why will she all of a sudden be capable of handling the Olympics? The logic behind that makes zero sense.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Exactly. Which is why I think she’s got something up her sleeve. Either that or she got injured and her agent is telling her to keep things mysterious so she can sell her book. Which to me is bullshit. I always respect an honest celebrity, not one who keeps a shield in front of them to gross more sales.

      • JAS4 Says:

I kind of think after she took the six weeks off for the knee rehab she just couldn’t catch back up because that’s around when she seemed to stop tweeting about training and started talking like she wasn’t going to be ready because before that she was talking about trying to make the team for Jeselo but after the rehab at the Pacific Rims and Jeselo selection camp all she did was show skills and not routines

      • nero Says:

I get why it’s a good thing for a team to be secretive. Russia/Romania not saying or showing if they have amanars is a good example. You don’t want to show your hand too early

But for a single gymnast trying to make the team I don’t get it. Chellsie did it because we needed her on bars. Shawn isn’t invaluable anywhere, she’s not a commodity like in ’08, we don’t ‘need’ her anywhere

Even the gymnasts that have proven themselves invaluable; Maroney on vault, Douglas on bars have a chance to be left off the team

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I understand wanting to be secretive but she should be able to at least show up and do a watered down routine on at least one event as much as I hate to say even Nastia is doing that unless she pulls out last minute

  3. JAS4 Says:

I definitely don’t think Macko has any Olympic plans

  4. KMA Says:

  6. Rhanda Says:

I’ll forever find it strange that Shawn only attempted a comeback after tearing her knee to shreds. She would have faced an uphill battle without the knee injury. With it, it was just stupid. It’s too close to the selection for her or Nastia to PROVE they’re ready, but picking Olympians isn’t just about who can prove what by what time, as we all know.

    • JAS4 Says:

From the way Shawn made it sound she wasn’t even doing any gymnastics training while she was doing the six week knee rehab I think if I were her I would have found a near by gym and been at least working bars since that’s not too bad on the knee

      • Gymbee Says:

According to her blog on ESPNW, she did train at a local gym when she was at the rehab thing:

“I see a physical therapist daily for about two to three hours. We do a lot of strength training and biometrics work with high-tech tools like the Nike SPARQ Sensory Performance Lab, Dartfish digital movement analysis and Myotest. I do a lot of jumping and landing and things that really cater to my sport. In the evenings I head to a local gymnastics club for a few hours of skill work, just to keep up and make sure I don’t forget everything I know!”

      • JAS4 Says:

That’s good at least she was doing something I saw on an article or either on her twitter she said she took six weeks off for rehab so I thought she ment she didn’t do any gymnastics but I guess she ment time of from hard core training Lol

  7. sanitynmotion Says:

I just don’t get it. This girl is sponsored by Nike, Coke, and now Bounty (lol)…she has to have SOMEthing. She had THREE routines last year that were watered down and has had an entire year to improve. I would understand if she re-injured her knee, but she hasn’t said anything to that effect. I DON’T understand the “I just gave up” thing. This is Shawn Johnson. She doesn’t give up. Yeah, she’s going around doing book stuff and what not but how will that promote her book – that she went for a comeback (that EVERYONE was anxiously awaiting for) and then just “gave up.” It wasn’t that long ago she mentioned being excited to show everyone her upgrades!

If she doesn’t have anything up her sleeve I’ll be disappointed. Unless she re-injured herself.

I can’t wait to see Nastia fall off that beam muahahahahah!

  8. doughnut sundae Says:

Trepidation! It has nothing to do with Shawn, and it isn’t something that only returning Olympians face. Dealing with an f’d up competition schedule is everybody’s dilemma!

    – Secret Classic (May 26)
    – Visa Championships (June 7 to 10)
    – U.S. Olympic Trials (June 28 to July 1)

What was USA Gymnastics thinking? Where was America’s athlete rep when we needed her? The most important qualifiers this quad occur within the span of a month – on paper anyway. Factor in logistics and there is even less time to train productively for the Olympic Games three weeks later.

    • JAS4 Says:

I think it would be better if they did Classics in April, Nationals in May, and Trials in June(earlier in June) that way the competitions are spread out at least a little more I also think that a lot of the less experienced gymnast should be going to more of these international competitions the only one they went to was Jeselo

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah I agree – any other sport this would be seen as mundane and really pointless and stupid – and risky to the athletes. No wonder the girls are so beat up by the time the Olympics rolls around they can barely muster a healthy squad, and by then many are so tired they can’t hit their routines, or they just freak out entirely (ASac in ’08, McCool in ’04). Marta keeps doing it though. Talk about not learning from your mistakes. Even in swimming we have something called a “taper” that occurs right before big meets; we limit training time and distances significantly in the week or so running up to the meet so that by the time the meet is here, we are able to post our best times because our bodies are rested yet we are still in “competition shape.” Instead, it’s like Marta wants to run a “hell week” going right into the Olympics.

OK here’s my team if Johnson is really out:

      Vault: Weiber, Ross, Maroney (Douglas/Raisman)
      Bars: Ross, Sloan, Douglas (Weiber)
      Beam: Raisman, Ross, Weiber (Douglas)
      Floor: Weiber, Raisman, Sloan/Maroney (Douglas)

Yup. I think if Sloan is back, she has a really beautiful bars and floor. I would definitely prefer her over Nastia. Actually her bars are prettier than Nastia’s (in my opinion). But if not Sloan then my next vote would be for any other bar specialist besides Nastia and Bross (who isn’t a bar specialist but thinks she is).

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Funny you should say that about Bross because I tried writing a blog about her being a bars specialist (which I agree she isn;t) but I couldn’t get it right so I planned on finishing it tonight.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I know she is capable of decent scores on bars so is Jordyn or Shawn but I wouldn’t consider them bars specialist in my opinion a bars specialist is someone with 6.9+ d score on bars and who is capable of a good e score as well

      • sanitynmotion Says:

If anything, Bross should have focused on bars and floor. Her beam isn’t consistent enough and the US has enough good beamers (Ross, Weiber, and Raisman are pretty much locks at this point and they would fulfill the beam requirement). I don’t understand bars/beam only for her, unless it’s Liukin’s plot to give his daughter a better shot by making sure Bross is out of the picture.

      • JAS4 Says:

I think it would really help Bross if she kept floor but without it she is in direct competition with Nastia who for all we know could still be secretly training floor

    • doughnut sundae Says:

      @JAS4, sanitynmotion

From the American Cup at the beginning of the season to U.S. Olympic Trials, everything remains pretty much intact, as it was in 2008. Thing is the Games are two months earlier than they were in Beijing, so in order to keep tradition, USA Gymnastics has had to rob its Hopefuls of their season. As a consequence, its member athletes are taking more risks in a shorter timeframe, and gymnastics isn’t exactly the safest sport around.

The problem in ’08 was that Hopefuls were peaking at Trials, which was more than a month before the Olympics began. This time around they are likely to peak even earlier, at Nationals. Think about it. There are more Hopefuls this quad vying for fewer slots. Newly minted seniors have lived their entire lives for this moment – they’ve got nothing to lose by bringing their A-game. And because of this, everybody else will have to bring theirs too. Hence, the apprehension amongst hardened elite, for once an athlete has jumped into the fray (whether that is U.S. Classics or Nationals) all of the work they are doing for the Olympic Games should be done. There won’t be time for last minute code-whoring.

You’re right. The IOC should have America’s team roster by mid-June. But in order to do this, USA Gymnastics would need to break with tradition, jettison a qualifier (U.S. Classics) and repurpose U.S. Nationals (i.e., reduce redundancy and cap difficulty – Level 8 skills maybe?) with the hopes that, by performing below their means, the nation’s best athletes will be taking fewer risks.

The goal is to send the crème de la crème to London, healthy. To that end, USAG should be limiting its athlete’s risk for injury by regulating the competitive environment so that they are not only ready to compete but peak on the World’s stage.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

And this is probably why Russia will come out and win that team gold medal. Just watch. If two of the Russian girls can compete amanars, they only need to stay on beam to win that gold.
Here’s a scenario: Russia wins gold, Romania silver and USA bronze. OK so what would be Marta’s explanation then? Yet I can totally see this happening.

  9. Alex Says:

I am sad about Becca Bross. I never thought she was the prettiest or cleanest gymnast, but I love how hard she has worked….and she does put up good scores. I want this for her, because it seems like this is IT for her. Ever since I can remember, she’s been the WOGA “it” girl, and that’s been so much pressure. I mean, when she was a level 8 she was the next big thing. That’s a lot. That kid has worked so hard, been through so much, and DESERVES this shot. I know that they all work hard and that they all deserve it, but something about Bross makes me want it for her more. I know her chances are seeming less and less likely, but I still think she could contribute, and I want her on that team.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

How about just being sad that only 5, not 6, girls can compete at these games. Even if it were 7 Bross would totally make it, if not just as a support role in the event someone gets injured, or if someone shows up to London and has a Courtney McCool moment. It’s not only Bross who we should feel sad for. ALL of these girls train hard and give it their all. Sloan hasn’t had a break at all (except injury breaks) since the ’08 games. Vega, Maroney, Raisman, Weiber, etc…I’m sure they all had to give up being a “high school senior” for their Olympic dream. They all have lost a portion of their “normal” childhood to do amazing things. This 5-person per team rule really screws a lot of these girls over. Remember the Magnificent 7? Who do you think would have gotten screwed over there? (Phelps, Borden)?

They should go back to the old way. Seven-member teams, all girls must compete all events, and sh*t, bring back compulsories so we can better compare the gymnasts. I thought the compulsories brought out the artistic more so in everyone. And this way, we get to see more routines. Three up, three count – you don’t get to see as many routines. More pressure doesn’t equate to more entertainment (at least on my end), but I have a feeling that was the end goal, which is sad for these girls to be under that kind of pressure at age 16.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

It should have been Amy Chow that was left off that team. She is the worst gymnast I have ever seen from the US except on bars and even that routine was a bunch of stalder work. Her vault should have been scored in the 9.5 range for her shit form and her beam and floor were horrific.

Amanda would or should have made that team over Amy. The only event she wasn’t any good at was vault.

    • nero Says:

BROSS!! I completely agree Alex, I can’t help but love her. She’s not doing AA anymore which I think is good, it takes a lot of pressure off but she ditched floor too which I think is bad. Her knee probably can’t handle it but if she got her old routine back she would be making a good case for herself. I mean bars, beam AND a floor that can score in the 15s is pretty impressive

I like to imagine Maroney working on a TTY, Marta and all of USAG have seen it but keep it on the DL. She does an amanar at Nats, Trials and Olympic Quals then BOOM Olympic TF she sticks the TTY and gets a 17.0

Meanwhile Bross has been secretly upgrading her bars and shows up with a 7.0 set complete with a tucked double double dismount and brings in the highest bar score at the Olympics

And then my alarm goes off~

    • gymtruthteller Says:

With all due respect Rebecca and her family put herself in that situation. She chose to train at Woga. This isn’t about you personally Alex but it pisses me off when people use pressure as an excuse. This type of pressure is self inflicted.

Take Alicia Sacramone. Marta yelled at her and said she hated her. Everyone was outraged but Alicia went straight back to the situation. Does she really have a right to complain she is treated that way? Not really.

If I had a say in all of this my 3 personal wishes for this Olympic team are as followed ,
      1- No Nastia
      2- No Gabby
      3- No Woga gymnasts.

(okay so no Woga and No Nastia are the same but I put both just to be sure:)

A stress free, media not over hyped dream team.

That being said I think I will feel bad for Bross if she fails to make this team but only will I be mad if she fails to make this team in favor of Nastia.

      • JAS4 Says:

I think Marta will do whatever it takes to make room for Nastia on the team I kind of wonder if that’s why Shawn seems to be throwing in the towel because she knows that most likely only one if any 08 veterans will be on the team and she knows that no matter how well she does unless she can be number one at trials and secure her spot then Nastia will get the spot she seemed much more enthusiastic about her comeback before Nastia announced hers as for Sloan she is probably hoping she can beat Nastia on bars and ASac is probably hoping she can be on the team too with her vaulting if Nastia is on the team and Memmel is just gangsta and doesn’t give a crap she is there to beat Nastia

      • nero Says:

I like Douglas but I kinda hope Bross pips her for a spot. I would feel bad for Douglas if she doesn’t make the team but she seems far from done. I can see her going to worlds next year and maybe trying for Rio

But this seems it for Bross and that makes me sad. She started out as the ‘it’ girl and now she’s the underdog. I want her last hurrah to end on a high note not a fizzle.

        damn you 5 member teams

      • JAS4 Says:

Bross never went pro did she? I think if after the Olympics if she would slow down a little and take time to fully heal from her injuries and just overworking herself I think she could do really well in the NCAA if she wanted to keep competing but not as an elite but I could also see her trying to make another Worlds team if she doesn’t make the Olympics to try to wrap up her elite career on a good note

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I am pretty sure she went pro (Bross)

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I would take Bross over Gabby in a second.

      • Dee Says:

ahhhh hahahah i love your #2 team wish….that, right now, is my only one.

      • Dee Says:

Pretty sure she went pro…..she’s been in every damn GK catalogue since ’09.

      • JAS4 Says:

Yeah I don’t know if going pro so early was the best decision in the long run but that’s for Bross and her parents to worry about I just think with a little rest she probably could have done well in the NCAA

  10. JAS4 Says:

GTT I was looking at gymnastics stuff on google and I saw this:

    Nastia Liukin | Facebook
Nastia Liukin trains the balance beam in hopes of making the team for the 2012 Olympic Games in …

I tried to click the link but it was acting up on my phone so I copied and pasted but does this mean she is only training beam now? Does’t matter Marta will still take her anyways lol

    • gymtruthteller Says:

That was some secret video that “was leaked” but people figured out she leaked it on purpose.

  11. Aerial Says:

    New Shawn ESPN blog.

She always struck me as someone so confident and just happy to be her. I guess even those types can be hurting inside.

If I were a reporter, I would ask the question she always gets, “Tell me about a typical day in your life” or “How do you ever fit in a life around these training hours?” and if she answered the same as always – days spent doing cardio, pilates and training, I’d say, “So when did you have time to go to the lakehouse? And film the commercials? And record your entire book? And have that grilling party? And tan? And run errands all day?” etc. etc. and see what she said.

I know I’m being one of those losers but I am still stymied by all of her tweets at any time of day being about everything but gymnastics. Even Nastia and Chellsie keep reinforcing how they’re feeling after workouts. I truly hope Shawnita is training by the light of the moon, will not drop out and prove everyone wrong. I’m just wondering if she is superhuman.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Well she said in one of those blogs she trains 5-6 hours a day. She doesn’t tweet nearly that often, so I’m sure she’s finding time. Who knows. Maybe the grilling/running errands is happening either after or in between workouts. I’m crossing my fingers she’s still training (she said she was in that blog!) and hoping she stuns us. Maybe she’s doing this on purpose (not talking about her gymnastics)…she was even asked a question about what her floor passes were and she was like “you’re going to have to wait and see” with a smile on her face. I still think she’s up to something.

I just wish it were June already and we’d know our answer. I hate speculating too much. It wears me out! Haha…
