National Qualifier

Nica Hults won 1st place All Around and bars, and medaled on all events! Floor 4th 13.25, beam 6th 13.2, bars 1st 14.35, vault 3rd 13.65, 1st AA 54.45.

A facebook update from a source. Not mine. This was sent to me from someone else who obviously borrowed someones facebook or twitter update but I appreciate the info.

Cincy’s facebook says someone with the last name Poof qualified to Classics too.

Here are the results

Lizzie Leduc had a horrific bars routine but she did well on her other events. It is a huge shame that someone with this type of potential would not be given a pass to Classics having one bad routine vs three decent ones for her. We all know other gymnasts would be given the free pass. That bar score looks like she might have gotten hurt and not finished the routine. Either that or she fell 6 times.

Wasn’t Casey Jo Magee supposed to compete here?

I never enjoy Lizzie on tape but she is very pretty to watch in person. It is obvious that she has probably realized by now College is her best bet but I wonder what she could have done with a good coach. Valeri was useless for her.

Not bad for an old lady but even without this fall she wasn’t scoring well.

Nica has a lot of potential but I don’t seeing her realizing it with Kim Zmeskal

the end

Been reading for awhile, but first time commenting. Interesting that Nica’s beam difficulty was so low as we saw last year that she can rock out some pretty amazing skills on beam.
I think Casey Jo already qualified to the American Classic, which is tomorrow (?) and this meet was to qualify as elite/to compete at the American Classic.

  2. JAS4 Says:

I see Jen Hansen the 38 year old didn’t make it she had a 26 total for two events and I think they have to have a 28 total? But I’m not sure

  3. Exgymgurl Says:

Casey competes tomorrow. Jen has one more opportunity to qualify for classics. I wish Ashley Priess was here.

  4. Exgymgurl Says:

    jay Clark resigns@ Georgia…

    Holy shayla Worley batman

    • gymtruthteller Says:

GGMB is blaming Shayla for not living up to potential. I am not a Shayla fan but they would blame her for the hole in the ozone layer if they could

  5. Exgymgurl Says:

It’s not just her the whole team fails….. He told the team he was fired… Bring on coach Kupets

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Rumor had it that he spent a lot of time with Shayla trying to get her head on straight and she did well at Nationals. Everyone else fell apart.

      • Exgymgurl Says:

I remember those comments from the videos… It’s not shaylas fault really she’s not the coach and she didn’t recruit herself

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I read it on GGMB. They must have gotten them from the videos but I never saw them.

  6. Exgymgurl Says:

That plus Kat ding was texting Youclan for coaching tips before event finals and a pep talk…. Tells me jay Clark just didn’t fill the void

  7. Exgymgurl Says:

I’m glad I love georgia gymnastics, his coaching was painful….

  8. Exgymgurl Says:

When Youclan was asked if she’d come back she replied anything can happen…. Watch out shayla

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Sounds like a deal is already in the works. I like Suzanne and always have but unless she plans on staying for years they really need to go a new direction.

Taking her back is really a no brainer though.

  9. Exgymgurl Says:

The AThletic director implied they weren’t thinking about it. From what I hear the meltdown on beam at Nationals she was not happy…. It would be a good fill in for a year or two to stabilize the program get rid of shayla and get courtney muppets ready… Yeah iPad spell correct. Meant KUPETS but muppets is funnier

    • Exgymgurl Says:

I would stalk practices just to see Suzanne all up shayla and christa and Noel’s asses… Your the seniors lead damnit

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I hate Kupets. I don’t want her in

  10. Aerial Says:

If Yoculan comes back, how will she ever leave again? How and when does she retire a second time? Although in a way I wish she would (I honestly did enjoy many of her athletes during Georgia’s dynasty… though not Muppets, lol) I feel like Georgia will only be known as Suzanne’s school or her rescue pet. I think another excellent coach needs to come in and raise this program back out of the crumbles. A whole new outlook, minus the praying to do well regardless of team fitness and mental issues in competition. I don’t know who this coach would be.
PS. Though yes, I did find Suzanne’s response interesting. And I kinda feel like they wouldn’t have let Jay go before knowing if anyone else appropriate was available to come in… especially knowing many athletes stay and train for the summer, including freshies.
PPS. The people that guessed Shayla Worley could bring down this program I actually believe are partially correct!

    • LOSO Says:

Can I ask why people on here don’t like Kupets? I’ve always liked her and I never thought she was a controversial person to like. Not trying to start shit, just genuinely curious. Also gymtruthteller, who would you like to see Hults with? I kind of think TD is good for her – not cause she’s necessarily the best, but mentally, she’s a bit of a sensitive kid and is seemingly doing well in their environment.

      • Aerial Says:

I didn’t hate her, but have never bonded with gymnasts who wear gigantic wrist guards. And I never liked her floor routines. Her consistency and comebacks though were definitely hugely impressive.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I don’t really hate her but I have this thing with gymnasts not being called out for their issues. Kupets had lots of small leg separations and people act like she is Gods gift to College gymnastics. I deduction is a deduction and you don’t get to skip it because you blindly follow a gymnast. Her fans are like that.

Overall she was the best College gymnast of all time. I get that I just wish people would acknowledge she had her issues. Oh and I find her personality annoying as hell. Not a big fan of the goody goodies.

I don’t know who Nica should be with but I like her floor and think she could really be something if she got a coach that isn’t under Marta’s thumb. Maybe Chow would be a good place for her. Maybe I just don’t like Zmeskal. I just hate seeing kids with so much talent wasted because Marta likes the fact they are with one of her pet coaches.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

I know Shayla is known for being a cocky shit but if she brought down Georgia this quickly we should send her to Afghanistan and She will whip those terrorists into shape.

      • Aerial Says:

She didn’t bring them down single-handedly but the drama she brings and the fact that Jay spent the last 3 years trying to force her to be the recruit he wished she was, left others coachless at times and the line-ups, wonky with team morale spirallilng out of control at meets. He was unwilling to pull her or challenge/develop others for roles they were ready for, unless she was ill. And I do maintain this, on top of everything else I know nothing about, and the other concerns that have come to light between Jay and the school and the program since Suzanne left, must have contributed to a distorted atmosphere.

        Why don’t you like Zmeskal?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

My Zmeskal hatred runs deep. Unless you are a licensed therapist it isn’t something we should discuss on this blog:) I don’t hate her anymore. I used to hate her when she was an overrated gymnast but again, Looooong story.

Why didn’t Jay kick Shayla to the curb? Scholarships are yearly correct? If Shayla was REALLY bringing everyone else down she would have been dumped because she surely has not stepped up.

      • JAS4 Says:

Apparently Pan Ams last year is how Shawn qualifies to Nationals without going to classics but what about Nastia I’m guessing she will petition to Nationals? Lol

      • gymtruthteller Says:

They will probably fly her there on a plane by herself.

      • doughnut sundae Says:

        The Rules:

Only last year’s World Championships and Pan American team (including traveling alternates) get a free pass to Nationals this year. Everybody else will have to score out on an assignment (national or international competition), at a selection camp or verification camp between Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. Of course there’s loophole for the delusional, an ‘accepted’ petition…

        The Result:

Shawn’s free pass to Nationals (via Pan Am Games) makes sense – it is forthright.

Nastia’s free pass is clever – gotta give the girl props for that one! When she was renamed to the National Team in November, she qualified for Nationals as well, which made everything till then an option.

Alicia is the sly girl. She got a World Championships gold medal AND a Nationals invite while in bed with her boyfriend. OK, so it was a hospital bed. But still.

  11. Biyatch Says:

USAG just posted a video of Alicia verifying her Rudi. Looked pretty dynamic in the video. Don’t really understand how she can be ready when she had MAJOR surgery in October yet Shawn and Nastia aren’t there.

    • TCO Says:

The Alicia surgery is pretty much a “simple fix”. You break the tendon, they repair it. The repair is stronger than what you had to start with. The Achilles rupture is a huge injury and very dramatic. And her recovery is relatively fast. But the good thing is it is a structure that “can be fixed”.

Knee and shoulder surgeries very commonly DO NOT fix what is wrong. For instance part of Shawn’s injury involves damage to the meniscus. That is tissue that is cleaned up and parts of the anatomy are just gone now. She is MISSING part of the functional structure. She will NEVER be 100%. Shoulders are even more complicated and often athletes do not regain full function.

Shawn would not have had to do a SECOND surgery if the issue were fixed. This is just a bad sign that her body is kind of fooked. Same thing with Memmel. Sometimes your body is just never the same again.

  12. Exgymgurl Says:

Alicia was competition ready at worlds in 2011. maybe Alicia just wants it more….Personally I’m pulling for Bross Wieber Ross Maroney and Ali Raisman. Im over Gabby and I think these 5 are the most confident highest start values and are mentally the toughest. Classics , Championships and trials should sort it out….like a gauntlet….Finnegan is a strong alternate and a great replacement should someone get hurt. With Maroney, Bross doesn’t have to vault or be an AA contender. Raisman gets in on proven consistency even though she’s past her peak. Maroney and Bross compliment each other well and both have proven they bring it in high pressure situations. I think Gabby needs to do what Alicia did, spend the next 4 yrs getting her mental game together. Alicia in 2004 is not Alicia in 2008. jordyn and Kyla go without saying and are in on 1,2 AA. if they both hit at trials, Marta will make sure they place 1-2. With only 5 there’s not room for a specialist. You need 3 solid scores on every event. jordyn has that, Ross has that, Bross and Maroney fill the other holes nicely. You don’t need Raisman but she’s nice to have on beam, floor and vault. course if the gauntlet creates a fall fest and people get hurt its anyone’s guess… Like the 2003 worlds…

  13. Exgymgurl Says:

Now for something really important, Pitic made the 5 chosen for Euros. If she shines and hits bars and vault for the team, she may beat chelaru and racea for the Olympics. Pitic just needs to hold it together and be mentally strong. And kill it on bars for the team. This is the best news for Raluca unless it’s a mind Frack to get chelaru on the ball. B+B are giving her a chance at the highest pressure competition next to thenolympics. Bring it prove it and pull through Pitic!!!!❤

  14. Exgymgurl Says:

Anybody know how to watch euros online in the US?

  15. terri3975 Says:

I love elite gymnastics and understand the scoring for the meets, but am hopelessly confused about how the selection process for the US Olympic Team works. It seems to be somewhat based on actual meet results but there also seems to be a lot of secrecy. Does anybody know the scoop?

    • Dee Says:

By my understanding, the team will be named at trials (not sure if they will take the top 5 AA and call it a day or how they are deciding who based on the scoring). USA Gym recently said that the camp last week was the last one until the Olympic Training camp to prep them for London…but I do not put it past them to name a team a trials for the TV ratings, and then take them to another camp and “change the roster”.

Am I right? Is that what is happening? You cant tell me that a member or two wont be switched around between the team named at trials and the team at the camp before London.

      • JAS4 Says:

At trials only the top AAer is guaranteed a spot on the team and the other four will be chosen at trials but by the selection committee/Marta

      • Dee Says:

oh wow, that seems sort of crap. i knew i didnt get it right, haha. but seriously…you know between trials and the camp before they leave for london that roster is going to change a bit.

      • terri3975 Says:

Thanks JAS4 and Dee for the info. It’s bad enough that the gymnastics is subject to subjective scoring by judges who obviously are going to have biases even if they try not to have them. There is just no way to avoid that I guess due to the nature of the sport. But then to add another layer of politics to it all by having the teams selected by a committee seems just crazy to me. My girls are in swimming and there is not much politics because you can’t argue with the timer. Love gymnastics though but feel so sorry for the girls having to put up with the politics of it after putting in all that hard work.

      • Sandy Says:

I’m a swimmer myself, so have a hard time accepting the way these teams are put together. Thank god us swimmers have a subjective measurement such as the “clock.” I am also an avid gymnastics fan, so I can’t help but watch this train wreck happen. I am pro “old school” where it should just be the top five all around gymnasts make the team. Done, and done. Seems so sketchy when we factor in “specialists” anymore, especially with a five-member team. I’m so over the whole closed-door mantra of the way it’s allowed for the women’s Olympic team to be decided. Marta sucks. If she doesn’t bring home gold this time, she should be fired. Period.

Plus, anyone notice how in the past it was the addition of these so-called “specialists” that kind of ruined Team USA’s chances for Olympic gold? In 2004, TWO spots were given to vaulters (pathetic considering those two girls couldn’t even do amanars OR rudi vaults, compared to what these all around girls can do today), so USA really lacked on floor and had to rely on an injured Courtney Kupets. In 2008, Alicia freaked out on beam AND floor. Nobody could take over her floor because everyone else was injured. Also, you never know – if she had done an awesome beam and awesome floor, maybe Shawn and Nastia wouldn’t have messed up as well – it’s called momentum. I know that’s really speculative, but I’m just saying that the whole “specialist” thing has yet to really prove itself.

I feel that for 2012, at least the top two AA’ers should make the team. I feel like Marta “announced” this stupid rule (the top AA only) because Jordyn is pretty much a lock anyways.
I think it would be pretty damn ironic though if, say, Jordyn just has a bad meet, falls a few times, and someone like Shawn or Chelsie happens to be there to take that top spot. I would hope someone You Tube’s the look on Marta’s face if that happens. It’ll be a total “oh sh*t” response. Then she’ll have to pay someone to pull a Tanya Harding act on whoever that winner turns out to be, if that winner is not in her “top five.”

Let’s face it Marta is already 90% sure of who’s going to be on that Olympic team. Doesn’t matter how they do in nationals or trials, she’ll pay the judges to do what she wants them to do.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Like when Hollie Vise finished second (tied for but she should have been second all alone) at Nationals and Marta had to take her to That made me smile.

      • terri3975 Says:

Sandy, your preaching to the choir when it comes to Marta. The only good thing is she and that hubby of hers are no longer coaching gymnasts personally. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, those two could really suck the life out of a gymnast, or at least try to, when they set their mind to it.

  16. terri3975 Says:

Wow. No wonder everybody involved fears Marta so much.

    • doughnut sundae Says:

Most coaches mellow out with age and experience. So Marta must be as heartwarming as nana nowadays, rather than Bella’s better half.

  17. Mom2gymgirl Says:

“Poof” is actually Alexis Beucler from Cincinnati Gymnastics🙂

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Thanks mom. Where did the nick name come from?

      • Mom2gymgirl Says:

I think it came from her very curly hair. When it’s in a pony tail, it looks like a big poofy pompom. She’s super tiny too which makes her pony even bigger. She did recently straighten her hair, but the nickname stuck. She is a really sweet girl. Lots of talent and potential.

  18. terri3975 Says:

Okay, I know I am showing my gymnastics or literary ignorance here, but who is “nana”?

    • doughnut sundae Says:

By ‘nana’ I meant the obvious: grandmother. I think Marta is no more threatening than a grandma nowadays. Sure, she may be mean on occasion, but she isn’t anywhere near as terrifying as Bella who could make ill-advised decisions – whether fair or not – with impunity.

      • terri3975 Says:

Hah! Maybe she’s mellowed in her old age but in her heydey back in the 80’s and 90’s she made the Wicked Witch of the West look like Glenda the Good Witch. The girls in Karolyi’s Gym were scared to death of her. And I am not so sure she was Bela’s “better” half. I suspect she put him up to at least half of the nasty things he said and did to those girls. And God forbid if she formed a hate on for one of the girls. Her vindictiveness (and his) knew no bounds.

  19. JAS4 Says:

Chows gym with Gabby and Shawn

    • doughnut sundae Says:

Shawn and Gabby babbling to the press yesterday – ok. But a pic of Chellsie and her preschool teammates on vault was priceless!

  20. gymnastblog Says:

I think Nica should have stayed at AOGC. She was doing great there, and I personally believe her shot at 2016 was greater there.

Then again, she could go to WOGA and get a free pass. She could probably do that with Zmeskal too.
