This is why the US gets a bad rap when it comes to sports.

The United States is always labeled as homers. “We only root for our own gymnasts and basketball player and hockey teams” but while this is not 100% true on any level when things like this happen this is why we get such a bad rap.

IG Message board is at it again. The same people are in a discussion trying to convince the world that Nastia Liukin is better at the uneven bars than Svetlana Khorkina.

I know free speech says we all get our own opinion but in cases like this I am sorry there just is no real debate. One gymnast competed one of the most original routines of all time. She is a 5 time World Champion on the Uneven Bars. A two time Olympic gold medalist and would have been 3 times if she had not fallen at the 04 Olympics. She is also 6 time European Championships Uneven bar Gold medalist. (I won’t include Russian Championships because those are as biased as the National titles Nastia has and have no merit in the world of international gymnastics IMO. If you would like to take them into consideration go ahead)

Her competition has one Olympic silver medal that many believe she didn’t even deserve. Nastia is also a world champion on bars once and has two other silver medals.

Only one of Svetlana’s titles is a debate and that is in 1996 where she made a mistake (on her pak solto) and was gifted the Gold medal (tied with Elena Piskun) over French’s Isabelle Severino who was blatantly robbed even with her messy leg separated Def.

What makes Svetlana’s UB titles even more impressive is she did them over 3 different era’s in the sport (and 3 different codes) she also did not compete in a time where only 3 gymnasts had a shot at the title due to the code. If Svetlana fell she was out of the finals. Nastia never had to deal with that winning her silver medal at the Olympic when in any other era she would not have made the finals.

I am not a big Svetlana fan overall. I find she got a lot of gifts in her career (European AA (2002)against Verona Van de Leur comes to mind) but the one event she shined on was the UB.

If you want to debate her weak floor was overscored I’ll agree with you. If you want to debate her vaults were a mess landed low (though difficult) again I’ll be the first one in line to take your side but to even try and debate that Liukin was better on bars then Svetlana just makes everyone look bad.

Now before you slam me for free speech don’t get me wrong. Not everyone has to prefer Svetlana’s way of doing bars over say He Kexin or Beth Tweddles. I prefer both of their routines over Svetlana’s (you can also include Mo Huilan and Bi Wenjing to that list) but matter of taste doesn’t = deductions.

If it was up to me we would go back to the way bars was in the 70’s and 80’s because I much prefered those routines over anything we have seen in the last 10 years.

did my comment go through? idk. here it is again, jst delete if the first one showed up, lol, sry.

oh god oh god. shameful. not only does khorkina have them all beat on longevity, she also competed in some of the most competitive eras of gymnastics (remember when EFs were exciting and unpredictable?) AND had the disadvantage of competing under the 10 system. she couldn’t rack up the points in DV and then fall and qualify to finals anyway. she was unbeatable because she almost never missed anything when it counted, because she was THE FUCKING BEST at what she did, not because she threw a bunch of hard shit and said a prayer before she mounted. not to mention all the innovation she’s responsible for. shit. i know you know this but i needed to vent. =P

i mean, if you like nastia or he or whoever better, that’s fine, but pls grow up enough to be able to make some objective comparisons.

I think the swearing sent it to the spam I just realized it was there.

Yea I don’t get how they can even justify this but it is pretty sad that they can’t be objective at all.

  3. Lynn Says:

After thinking khorkina was overrated for a long time, i decided to go back and watcha 4 or 5 of her bar routines over the decade. NOOOW, I think she was ahead of her time and her routines are beautiful with stuck landings. Not only is she the queen of UB, but she had the best routines too.

  4. PolyisTCOandbanned Says:

Nastia is a screaming froggy-legged mess on UBs. I think Shawn is better than her. Keeps her feet together, toe point, does cool skills, good dismount. (There are codes where Shawn would have gotten 10s provided she stuck the dismount, and Nastia would have been pimp-slapped).

Korki is actually pretty cool looking. I just had this reflective thing against her when I started learning gym in 2007 (since the Nastia loverz like her). But watching her, she is ok.

P.s. Retton flip! USA! USA! 😉

  5. PolyisTCOandbanned Says:

It is funny that the same “artistry weenies” who talk about extreme difficulty being wrong…turn around and embrace Nastia’s code whoring and just atrocious form on UBs.

  6. gymtruthteller Says:

The whole thing with Shawn kinda of makes me mad. I blame her coach. Shawn has a very strong bar routine and she needed to upgrade the difficulty. She usually hits her handstands pretty well and she has a very good routine IMO was underscored in 08.

I won’t go as far to say she was better then Nastia because I don’t think highly of all the form issues in Nastia’s routine as it is but I think Shawn’s coached owed it to her to add more difficulty into that routine. Shawn was capable of it and in general of so much more on the UB. Then IMO the judges wanted to give Nastia that gold medal and were going to give it to her as long as she didn’t fall that is why her 1.5 with no height and distance scored as well as the DTY’s in China.

You know how I feel about leg separations. These gymnasts are supposed to be the best the least Nastia could have done was hid her form issues like Beth Tweddle did

  7. gymtruthteller Says:

That happens to me a lot also. It’s the whole you don’t really appreciate someone til they are gone.

  8. slane Says:

IG message board refugee here. Check out the ‘gymnasts who wanted to win too much’ thread to see why. It is utterly impossible to post an opinion there without someone misconstruing it and claiming to be all offended.
Feel free to look at the thread, personally I have delisted the forum from favorites and won’t return. I really don’t care anymore.

  9. Dark Vader Says:

Khorkina is the best all time on uneven bars. Liukin isn’t even top 20. I am not sure I would even rate her as the best American all time on bars. I might pick Marcia Frederick or Julianne McNamara for that. Shannon Miller is also roughly the same level. Both have 1 world title and 1 (non gold) Olympic medal, and contrary to NBC stupid claims Nastia was not robbed of the 2008 gold at all.
