The 2012 American cup

03/03/2012

I probably, No I definitely won’t be up at 11.30 AM on a Saturday morning so I started this blog early.

If you would like to complain about Aly Raisman’s bar score being too high. This is the place you do it.

If you want to talk about how Jordyn or Larisa or Diana this is where you do it.

I’ll see you some time tomorrow.

Hi All. I had a friend stop by and we went out to lunch so I missed most of the American Cup. I don’t even know who won. I only saw a few minutes of it and I have a huge rant about NBC coming up but I will be back in a few. I am off to watch what I taped.

My bad. Baseball season starts tonight so I will have to watch the American Cup tomorrow. I’ll see you then.

Aly Raisman was robbed. Event Finals

10/25/2010

One of my fondest memories from last years worlds was Lauren Mitchell sitting, looking around just happy as a clam because she just competed two really amazing routines. This was even before she won silver medals on beam and floor so I just can’t complain about her winning the floor Gold medal. I am happy for her. She was a bit overscored due to the landings on her second and last pass but I just can’t bring myself to say she didn’t deserve the Gold medal. I could make a case against her but it was close.

Aliya has been amazing at this years worlds. Winning the AA and team Gold and medals on floor, bars and vault is an amazing accomplishemnt. I thought her floor routine was pretty good in the event finals minus the landing on one of her passes. Her double turn looked short but she still got credit for it.

That brings us to the bronze medal where I am calling BULLSHIT. I am sorry but there is no way in hell Aly Raisman didn’t deserve this medal. You could even make a case for Vanessa Ferrari ( a case against is her lower difficultyby 4 tenths) who nailed 3 of her 4 passes but it will be a cold day in hell you will ever be able to make a case for Diana Chelaru. I guess you could even make a case for both of Vanessa and Aly being on the podium since Aliya’s double turn wasn’t complete but Diana had a huge step on her triple twist and was sloppy overall. Aly’s only real mistake was a step on her double pike. This just isn’t fair. They will over score Rebecca Bross till the cows come home because of Valeri but when someone nails a routine like Aly did they screw her.

Congrats to Peggy Liddick for her second World Champion

Beam Finals: What can you say. Ana Porgras hit a good routine with a few bobbles. Rebecca Bross had a few bobbles a small step on her dismount to take silver and Deng was way overscored on a routine full of huge bobbles to take Bronze. Alicia fell short on her 9th world medal finishing 5th due to her weak difficulty score.

The last man standing or should I say women standing was how the bars were won. Beth was first with her usual great routine. Aliya was second and had a good routine until her dismount and Rebecca Bross again benefitted from everyone falling to win the bronze medal. Bridget Sloan finished 4th. He was pretty upset crying after her routine was over. It’s a shame she fell. I think she will be better for it in the future. Everyone has to learn to lose sometime but she is still amazing.

Vault: Alicia hit her two vaults to finish 4th. Aliya had her Pod vault devalued after hitting an amazing Amanar to finish second and Jade Barbosa finished third. The rest of the results are below. Aliya protested her scores (well her coaches did) to no avail and poor Alicia had to sit there for a half an hour and wait. Come on judges get it right from the start.

Allison Taylor’s Scholarship and lack of competing. Is it fair? Romanian World teams named

09/06/2009

A few months ago I was reading the College gymnastics Message board. There was a very interesting discussion going on that
centered around UCLA Bruin Allison Taylor.

The gist of the discussion centered on Allison receiving a full scholarship but not competing in many competitions. The rumor was that the only reason Allison was given the scholarship was to help raise the teams GPA. (grade point average) Many people found this unfair and the discussion got so heated Allison’s mother felt the need to come defend her daughters honor. Apparently Mrs Taylor doesn’t believe in free speech because she told everyone they aren’t allowed to have an opinion and told them to take this discussion to Private Messages. You can read her comments here. She posts under the name ATsMom

The full discussion can be read at the College gymnastics message board in parts. The original discussion was started here or maybe here at this point I can’t really tell.

There were points on both sides of the issue I found interesting. One person said Allison earns her free ride because she show’s up to practice every day and does what the coach tells her to do. Another person said that having someone on scholarship that you have no plan on using is a waste of a spot. It could be used on a better gymnast that actually has the right to be there. Both opinions have merit. Now for my opinion:)

I am not a big fan of Allison Taylor the gymnast. IMO her gymnastics isn’t very good and certainly was never good enough to be getting a free ride to UCLA. You can’t fault Allison for excepting this scholarship but I can fault the school for being allowed to do this. Do you have any idea how much money it costs to send a child to UCLA? Do you have any idea how many students can’t afford to send their kids to College at all? It just isn’t fair that the regular people are paying for Allison’s free ride?

UCLA has not been the power house it used to be the last few years. Coach Val hasn’t had a real standout recruit since Tasha Schwikert. Maybe she should focus on giving scholarships out to gymnasts that deserve it instead of trying to raise the teams GPA.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
