Nominee for Sportsperson of the year : Bailie Key

Bailie can claim something even Simone Biles cannot this year. She won every AA competition she entered. She won Classics, Nationals, Jeselo, The International Junior Mexican Cup and the Junior Japan Invitational and those are just off the top of my head.

I already see a laurie vs Bailey rivalry in 2016. Nbc wont be able to resist themselves. Im wondering if Marta will push kyla out of the way in 2015 for bailey or put kyla back in a beam and bars specialist spot in 2015.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Kyla has to upgrade. Her execution isn’t as good as it used to be and I was surprised the judges rewarded her as much as they did. During events finals when I found out scores and such I was all ready to say she was robbed of the bars and beam titles but she wasn’t. The Chinese girl fixed her form for finals and Aliya was rock steady on beam. (Form aside on a few things)

    • sainabou nyang Says:

Kyla cant afford to grow any taller other wise her current bar routine will become an issue. Even her DLO imo is not has good as last year.

    • sanitynmotion Says:

Kyla needs to ugprade to stay relevant, for sure. I didn’t think her form was “that” bad for her execution (her feet were a bit sloppy in the beginning and her legs came apart a bit in the shaposh half and her salto, but so did the Chinese girl’s…) – I would say the execution between Kyla and Huidan (the girl that won, had to go back and look up her name) was similar.

Kyla lost UB because of her D score, quite simple. Huidan had two tenths of a cushion.

I still have to watch beam finals (I know) but looking at Kyla and Musty’s D score of 6.0…Kyla is quite lucky here. No way in another year or so will Musty just have a 6.0 D score. Same with most others in the world. Kyla needs to upgrade or Marta will easily push her aside.

I think this years Worlds proved Kyla’s coaches point. Beforehand no one thought she would win any EF medals and some didn’t think she would get an AA one and she came home with 3. She would have beat Mustafina on beam if she stuck her dismount too. They didn’t need all the crazy difficulty for this year to get the medals because of her execution.

Her coaches clearly know how to bring in the difficulty when they’re ready. I’m sure she’ll have more should she compete at the American Cup. Her coaches even did that with McKayla on vault when she was there. She went from a FTY in 2008 to an amanar in 2009

But is Bailie peaking too early?

    • sainabou nyang Says:

I think Bailey is fine for now but Ive noticed she is growing. That rumored amanar shes supposedly training I hope is a rumor for now. I think her and many others will have growth spurt by next year.

    • Tortuga Says:

It’s hard to say when someone dominates early if they will keep steady or top out too soon. Jordyn was on top throughout juniors and seniors then missed out in London. Nastia was on top most of juniors and seniors with huge mistakes then won an AA title, not saying she deserved it but her body type is more similar to Bailie for now.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Jordyn missed out on London because of stupid beam judges and her own stupid coach and Marta – not because of peaking too early or anything like that. Jordyn most definitely should have been in that AA, just sayin’.

      • Karlie Says:

Yeah, but I do think the fact that she was worked so hard leading up to the Olympics was what led to her injury (stress fractures come from overuse). Geddert/Marta/beam judges on crack didn’t help matters either, but the reality was that she just didn’t seem like herself, either – which makes sense since she had what was likely a very painful stress fracture. I don’t consider that “peaking too early,” but it does indicate that Geddert might have been overworking her prior to the Olympics – too many hard skills, etc.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Yeah but I actually think that was more of a Marta issue; even Geddert was indicating displeasure with all the camps and such leading up to the Olympics. From his blog it sounded like he wanted to rest Jordyn more, but the pressure was on from Marta to keep going, going, going. He wasn’t liking it and I’m sure he wasn’t liking it even more when she was out of the AA.

Jordyn did look tired and overworked. She definitely should have rested more, but that’s why they pay Marta the big bucks – break the gymnasts so that those that “last” through her hellish camps get the break at the Olympics. Doesn’t make sense but every Olympics someone gets broken. In this case both Jordyn and McKayla had significant injuries; in fact McKayla was lucky she was only doing the one apparatus because if she were forced to do more, who knows if her leg would have snapped before vault finals, instead of after.

      • Tortuga Says:

My point is anything can happen really. Everyone thought Jordyn was a sure bet, and it didn’t work out that way. Only one or two mistakes less would have made the difference.

Bailie seems to handle pressure well so I think she will be around for awhile.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I thought Jordyn was one of the best in terms of handling pressure. She, Aly, and actually Shawn Johnson are my top 3 in handling pressure the last 8 years or so (I still can’t get over SJ’s floor routine after Nastia went in the AA…that was pretty epic, and her beam routine even though she was sick can’t forget that).

McKayla was also a “sure thing” for vault gold and look how that turned up. To be honest I don’t think she deserved a medal at all for sitting down her second vault, but that’s the code.

I like Bailie but the funny thing is I can’t get excited about her. People say the same about Kyla but I really like Kyla. For whatever reason I find Bailie boring, but maybe that’s just me. She’s a clean gymnast for the most part; a bit knob knee’d on beam and clean bars but just meh in my opinion. Not like I want to knock her I just don’t find her all that exciting.

It’ll be more interesting I guess once she becomes a senior.

      • Tortuga Says:

Agreed, age will hopefully be good to her.

The think about vault finals for me is not so much someone like McKayla falling on her second vault, but gymnasts like Pena throwing something they basically never land for the start value points. I think it should get a zero but I guess you can’t have one with out the other.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

I think they should give a 0 for that, too. No reason why there should even be a message out there that gives reason for gymnasts chucking nearly impossible skills. Pena shouldn’t even make it to vault finals for doing what she does.

    • CMR Says:

I don’t think Bailie is peaking too early. While it’s always possible, I just think she’s just THAT much better than everyone else. I think when the gymnasts are young it’s easier to see the difference in raw talent. By the time they reach 16-17 (and are done, for the most part, growing) they have all made adjustments and have developed much different styles. I think Bailie is just a superior gymnast right now. We will see how she deals with the growth spurts but I think her dominance is indicative of just superior raw talent…

  3. Catherine Says:

I was beginning to think Bailie was inhuman but then she fell off beam at Japan Jr and on floor at Mexican open.

Really looking forward to seeing how her bars develop.

  4. sanitynmotion Says:

I wonder if Bailie would have beat Simone if there were no age rule. She most likely would be beating Kyla right now…

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Simone deserved her won but she was so overscored on beam and floor at worlds. All of those judges should be fired but I don’t think Bailie would even be close to Kyla at this point

  5. Karlie Says:

Wow I totally forgot about Bailie but you’re right – she won every competition she entered. She’s incredible. I can’t wait to see her when she gets older – especially her bars.

  6. exgymgurl Says:

Bailie key is the only Jr I like.

  7. JAS4 Says:

USA gymnast careers basically come down to one thing in the end when they are at the Olympic/elite level…. Does Marta like or dislike them lol
