It always annoys me to no end when people who know little to nothing about gymnastics try to name two or three “great” gymnasts and one of them is Kerri Strug! Has there ever been an athlete whose actual accomplishments have been so little in comparison the general public’s perception of her?

My friends (4 year fans at best) haven’t heard of Strug if that makes you feel any better. They do name MLR & Carly though… which may even be worse depending on how you feel about them. lol

Unfortunately, if you’re an athlete and you give ESPN a “SportsCenter” moment, you become immortalized forever. I liken Kerri Strug to Bucky Dent. Their highlight is only shown at a certain time of year and it has made them more famous than they should be.

Agree. I wish everyone could appreciate 1) just how hard that vault is and 2) how hard it is to stick a vault landing in general and 3) how hard it is to stick an amanar at that height that perfectly.
It’s just insane how well she executed that vault.

I love Mckayla, I think it’s easy with her looks/confidence to label her a mean girl but if you really listen to what she’s saying she seems really nice. That gymnastike interview where she talked about her and Sandra sealed it for me.
With her falling at the Olympics and ‘the face’ if she does go back to gymnastics and competes a TTY she might be one of the only gymnasts to get a bunch of press in a non Olympic year.
I highly doubt she’ll make Rio unless she radically improves her AA, so these next 3 worlds might be it.

The internal competition of AA is too fierce in US. I think developing TTY is more pragmatic to her if she really want to vie for a spot in Rio 2016 (or she may prepare to start her acting career). However, no US women gymnast can make the next Olympic since 2000, so I am not so optimistic that any of Fierce 5 can be in Rio.

i bet half/most of the rio team will be girls who aren’t even elite yet! it must suck for the 2012/2013 new seniors especially. longevity seems so difficult. maybe of the FF girls kyla but so much can change in 4 years.
i really really really wish mckayla would seriously train a TTY. honestly she probably wouldn’t have been far off pre-injury.

I think if she can get a TTY or yurchenko double back by Rio then she’ll be in the same position as this year. A specialist contributing more tenths on one event than other specialists do on 2.

If McKayla could get the TTY (or vault of similar difficulty) and improve on another apparatus like floor it would increase her chances of making the Rio team if she decide to start training again

Somebody recently posted a link to an interview with McKayla’s coach before the Olympics and he talked about how difficult it was for her to recover from missing a couple of weeks of training while she recovered from her concussion. It makes you wonder how these girls can come back now when they have taken off so long travelling in tour, eating poorly, doing acting gigs, and all that. I’m just guessing but I bet that is one reason you see so many more repeat Olympians among the Russians and the Romanians. They are right back in the gym within weeks of the Olympics. Kyla is the only US gymnast who seems to be doing that.

I am so sorry but I had to post this! Gabby is on with Kelly and Michael on ABC right now, promoting her book. The bs level has hit a new high! Gabby wrote(ghost writer) that her family was homeless and they lived in a van when she was 2 years old?? She said she doesn’t remember that but her siblings told her about it?? Kelly asked if her Dad helped her achieve her dream and she said no. It was a scholarship for military kids that sent her to a camp in Texas…Dad is in military. Also, who does Gabby think paid their living expenses and later child support???
Now, Gabby says her Olympic dream started with seeing Carly Patterson in 2004?? Previously she said it was Shawn Johnson in 2008???? The stories keep changing & she can’t remember what she said previously.
Kelly asked her about moving to Iowa??? Kelly’s understanding of things is that Gabby’s coaches in Virginia sent her to train in Iowa??? Gabby said, “you’re right?”
Apparently Gabby wrote(ghost writer) that she wanted to quit gymnastics work in a fast food restaurant 7 months before the Olympics? She said her family & coaches talked her out of it?? That subject was covered in the Oprah interview w/her family. Her host family told Oprah they talked to Gabby but there was nothing related to “talking Gabby into staying?” She now claims her family & Chow had a big meeting with her to talk her into staying. Didn’t happen!!
It’s a bold-face lie that Gabby had to talk her mother into letting her go to Iowa!!! Gabby & her mother flew to Iowa and showed up on Chow’s doorstep, in order to beg him to take Gabby on.
The ba was so thick this morning, you needed waders to watch!
Gabby shows absolutely NO EMOTION! When she walked out, she walked by the audience without shaking anyone’s hand or saying hi, like ALL the other guests on Kelly & Michael do. She had an ULY one-sleeve dress & those God-awful shoe/boots…clunking all the way!!! She walks like a trucker!!!
Gabby is no better at public speaking and in some cases is worse!!! She made me more sick than usual! It was obvious that Gabby made Kelly & Michael uncomfortable! Good God I hope this book tour is short!!!

Anyway, annoying and all, she is still just 16. And it’s not like she is witnessing in a murder trial, maybe she got inspired by both Shawn and Carly? It’s a possibility.
I don’t care about her mothers looks – IMO attack opinions but not looks. No one is perfect in that department anyway, but each to their own.

I started a petition with some ideas on changing the two per country rule while still keeping diversity in the AA and EFs I would like to get as many signatures as possible and send it to the FIG. It shows that there are ways to address the concerns of the “weak sister” nations that has created the current absurd aa/event final qualification system — whereby only 2 gymnasts from each country can qualify — while at the same time preventing the complete injustices that occur like what happened to Jordyn this year. It just takes a few smart people to sit down and think about it. Of course that is probably expecting too much out of the IOC and FIG.

After her leg injury and surgery during the tour, I think TTY is hardly possible for her and her chance of Rio became dim (I think any of Fierce 5 have very little chance as well). Maybe she will also compete next season’s DWTS, start her acting career then transit to the entertainer.
