That bitch stole my Olympics

bitch_banner

Alicia Sacramone went into the 2008 Olympics with a chance at winning gold on vault and floor and a small chance winning a beam medal. She left as the choke artist that cost the US team the Gold medal. (Fair or not that is her legacy)

Aly Raisman went into the 2012 Olympics with a shot at floor gold she left the most decorated US gymnast of the 2012 games. If not for the “tie” rule she would have tied Aliya Mustafina for the most medals of any female gymnast at the games and that would include an AA medal.

Can you just imagine how badly this must annoy Alicia? Alicia can tumble almost as well as Aly and she can dance. She has better form and technique is in reality is ten times the gymnast at her peak that Aly was at hers but in ten years Aly’s name will be remembered and Alicia will be that girl that fell twice and cost the US team the gold medal.

They technically did not compete at the same Olympics but Alicia could have taken Aly’s spot on the 2012 team if the stars had aligned. Even competing at different Olympics they both would have been in competition for the same endorsements

Aly had the kind of Olympics Alicia could have had. I can only imagine how that must boil.

    From mini-me to did-better-than-me

    • sainabou nyang Says:

Lmao Lottie I couldn’t have said it better myself. Although watching Aly do a bar routine made me cringe, its not her fault that shes not a head case and keeps a cool head.

      • Gymnerd Says:

One thing Aly had going for her going into this year was that she’d been a calm, dependable competitor for almost this entire quad. I don’t recall Sac ever having that reputation(?).

  2. Kazic Says:

I hadn’t thought of it this way, but you are right. But really, who can she legitimately blame but herself?

    • gingercrush Says:

I dunno she didn’t perform Floor which was weaker for the US than either Beam or Vault. Did she choose not to do floor or was it her coach/Martha or a combination.

Same with Bross. Even though it was obvious she wasn’t in a position to be on the Olympic team (still screwed by the Beam dismount). Why was she not doing floor?

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Simple, Valerie stopped giving a shit when Nastia came back. Injury or not Rebecca Bross would have made more sense if she was doing floor but she wasn’t because Valerie talked her into being a specialist. Alica is the same. There is a reason she chose not to upgrade vault and do floor and sadly we will never know what that is.

  3. Case Says:

Yeah especially with the same coaching, etc.

At the end of the day, Aly has more mental toughness. That’s why she is wearing gold. Alicia may have more gymnastic talent but Aly has the intangibles that make a champion.

GTT, how does Boston treat Alicia? I know you’ve said Aly will be a hero forever, but I’m curious what ASac’s legacy will be in that town.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

She is never mentioned. Right after the Olympics in 08 she was all over the news but she is pretty much only mentioned as an after thought.

Up until Aly’s success if you asked anyone what gymnast was from the US Alicia would be the name mentioned. It would be known just not by everyone.

She was in Bob Krafts private sweet in 2011 when her BF came to town to play the Patriots but I am not sure if that was due to her name or who she was dating.

      • Kelley Lynskey (@Meatless_Ball29) Says:

If I was Alicia & if the rumors are true that she is annoyed with Anna Li for calling herself an Olympian (Which I mean I get where that would be annoying) However, at the same time If I was Alicia the last thing I’d ever do would be to utter the words Olympian/Olympics considering how the Olympic games went down for her (No pun intended) If I were her I’d come out with a bag over my head when the Olympians/Past Olympians come out in the finale during the tour in the rings. I feel what happened to her in ’08 was just karma at its finest! All the attitude, cockiness, hissy fits, & bad sportsmanship she showed to her fellow teammates over the years I felt really just caught up with her.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

She could have been annoyed at Anna for many reasons. That was my guess and it was never even a rumor. It was what I think she could be mad at her for and I still don’t think this was ever about Anna or Alicia. NO ONE but the Olympic team ever tweets pictures with Nastia. She is NEVER in the pix with Chellsie, Anna, Alicia or anyone else. I still say this is all about Nastia.

      • Guest Says:

Nastya just wants more attention, so she knows making use of the London Olympic team is the best way to increase her existence. If she takes pictures with less famous Beijing teammates such as Alicia or Chelsie, it is not helpful for her to draw attention.

  4. gingercrush Says:

I disagree with the whole Alica has more gymnastic talent. Alicia is perhaps slightly prettier. But Raisman has the formidable first tumble pass on floor and an amanar and for some reason or another gets relatively rewarded on Uneven Bars. Sacramone had the Rudi on vault and arguably better beam with a lesser dismount.

Both gymnasts are essentially Romanian just like their coach.

    • gingercrush Says:

And whilst I agree Sacramone should have been considered an alternate. With four gymnasts capable of Amanars and a 5th gymnast who performed them in the past. She really was out of the question. That and for some reason stopped performing on floor where the US were weaker.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

When I compared them I meant more like Alicia was supposed to have Aly’s Olympics in 2008. Not that she stle her Olympics. It took me two days to write this blog and I still did not get my point across.lol Sorry about that.

    • gymtruthteller Says:

Slightly? I would say more like colossally more watchable than Aly. Alicia had some dance ability which makes her Ana Porgras more than essentially Romanian. (Once in a life time)

      • gingercrush Says:

I don’t find Sacramone pretty to watch. Anyway the code rewards difficulty, clean landings and constant movement/connections. No one gets rewarded for being pretty.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Explain to me what you mean by being pretty? To me that means can dance with good form and execution. NONE of which Aly has. You are 100% right what the code rewards but IMO the code sucks.

      • mim Says:

i recently saw a video of aly’s floor routine at some local cup/invitational from 2007 or 2008 (shannon miller was commentating)… and aly could actually dance! i was floored (no pun intended) by how great her dancing ability was compared to now.

i wonder what happened… im wondering if it a conscious decision to sacrifice artistry for difficulty or if it was lost due to the growth/body changing.

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I’ve seen it. Gina Gogean actually had some presentation as a junior too. Who knows what happens between junior and senior. It’s crazy. My guess is Aly spent some time on dance as a child and Mihai did nothing after that.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

My friend (she was a gymnast and worked in gyms all her life) keeps telling me that the changes brought on by puberty are really critical to how effective you are at being able to keep your skills. Basically you train new skills up through puberty (train the ones you are good at), and then after puberty you do your best to try and “keep” those skills in your portfolio. Kind of like how we see Ross struggling to keep her amanar vault skill. So being able to train new skills as an adult is pretty impressive.

She also said that usually there’s the male coach to teach you the skills (the acrobatics) and then the female coach will more or less be responsible for your “grace” and overall presentation. Maybe this is where Aly was lacking – she ended up spending too much time with Mihai and not enough time with his wife (forgot her name)…

Also, I really want to know how Aly got an amanar but ASac never trained it. Could you imagine what a powerful vaulter she would be if she had an amanar and a rudii?

What’s sad is this blog is all about not reaching your true potential. Even though ASac had a rather long career in gymnastics, she never really reached her true potential. Part of the reason is also injury, but I really think there’s another reason that we won’t know about and it takes place behind the scenes, i.e., Marta “assuring” her that her 2008 skills will be more than enough for her to make the 2012 Olympic team.

  5. Kelley Lynskey (@Meatless_Ball29) Says:

I understood the point you were trying to make in this blog 100%

    • gymtruthteller Says:

      Thanks.

      • Kelley Lynskey (@Meatless_Ball29) Says:

No need to thank me I mean even Hellen Keller could see the point you were making in this entry. Which I really enjoyed btw cause I always wondered myself what Alicia & Mrs.Sacramone (Who is very vocal on Twitter & clearly has a lot to say & seems like a total Gym Mom to me) thought & had to say about Alicia’s experiences verses Aly’s. Oh to be a fly on the wall for those convos…..

      • gymtruthteller Says:

I think Helen Keller might have missed it but thanks. Alicia never tweets Aly. She never acknowledges Aly.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

Alicia is totally jealous of Aly, that’s why. Cuz yeah – Aly had the Olympics that Alicia totally “could have” had. And Aly isn’t as good a gymnast as Alicia. I’d rather see Alicia on beam and floor and vault over Aly. Aly had that one incredible tumbling pass but the floor exercise routine is more than just tumbling. I thought the Russian coach was dead on when he called Aly’s floor choreo a disgrace. It’s totally weak.

It’s funny though that Alicia is 24 and still acts like a 15 year old when it comes to these things.

And maybe the route to go is we pester her mom to give us the details about what “really” happened…she so badly wants to burst with that info, with all of those passive aggressive tweets..

  6. Kelley Lynskey (@Meatless_Ball29) Says:

Aly had the successful “What dreams are made of American hero” Olympic experience & success which is what was predicted for Alicia back in ’08 and well we know how that ended…Aly became famous from her Olympics while Alice became Infamous (For falling around like a damn rag doll all of the place) for hers.

  7. mim Says:

so much of it is luck, isn’t it.. just with regards to what quad you’re in because of your birthdate (domestically and internationally), who else has the necessary elements to make up the team, injuries… its easy to compare but it’s also so much more than the gymnastics itself.

i know it’s harsh but she screwed up 04 trials and tanked on beam in team finals. she only has herself to blame for that. i do have major respect for her comeback this year though, it made her quite redeemable in my eyes.

i actually hope for alicia’s sake she doesn’t feel like this about aly or any of the other girls, its just not healthy going through life with bitterness and regret like that especially when she has to acknowledge some of it has to door with her own performance. also, it’s not aly’s fault that that’s how it has all played put. it’s not aly’s fault that she can hold it together mentally and when it mattered alicia couldn’t. hopefully she’s let it all go.

  8. emconway6 Says:

Hi! I just wanted to say I literally just finished reading your blog from start to finish…. (Really…took me a good few dedicated days) and I love your opinion on everything. Most of the blogs I read, in my opinion, didn’t seem to give me harsh facts but more so kind of talked how amazing certain USA gymnasts were (even if they aren’t amazing..) I like you attitude! :) I’m a new gymnastics fan, I’ve always LOVED the summer Olympics mainly for basketball and gymnastics but I’ve been what you’d probably call a 4 year gymnastic fan.. but now I’ve gotten really into the sport, and love reading/researching about it! I’ll be sticking around for sure :)

Oh ps – One thing I didn’t always like reading was your take on Canadians :( lol no hard feelings!

    • gymtruthteller Says:

You read through this whole blog? That must have taken a long time.

I don’t actually hate Canadians (unless they are from Montreal and play hockey under that ugly blue and red logo) but I do have a hatred with it sometimes (Politically related) but I have come to appreciate some of your gymnasts lately. Some street cred from you ?????:)

Most US blogs are in blogging for fame. That want to be friend gymnasts more then give an opinion. I however might love a gymnast (say Aly Raisman) but can see how bad her form is at the same time. I can separate the difference between a gymnasts personality and their gymnastics.

      • emconway6 Says:

Okay okay, the habs are the worst thing in the world, so please feel free to hate all you like! (But.. I am a Leafs fan..embarrassingly enough.. I was never one to jump ships, been stuck with them since I was 3).

Ya, now that you mention the aspect of blogging for fame that completely suits all the blogs I read… They really should be considered fan sites!

      • gymtruthteller Says:

Yay I love Canadian haters. Calling them fan sites is a great description.

  9. sainabou nyang Says:

Hmmm I wonder if we will see asac at scam?

  10. Dee Says:

If I were ASac, I would have found the mini me stuff to be cute at first, but now that Aly has had so much success I’m sure just the mention of Alys name chaps Alicia’s ass.

  11. nero Says:

Gymnasts like Komova and Alicia will always be infinitely more pleasing to watch than Aly, but if you can’t back your shit up at a competition then the Aly gymnasts will always win.

Alicia had the chance for 4 medals at Beijing. I think she has the right to be a little peeved about the bronze on vault. Cheng’s Cheng had a lot more wrong with it than just her falling, but I guess she should have learned to stick her DTY.

She scored .025 less than Shawn and Nastia on beam in prelims. If she wouldn’t had wobbled right off the top on her back tuck Shawn would have said sayonara to beam finals and her gold medal.

She landed OOB on her front layout on floor in prelims. If it wasn’t for that she might have taken Nastia’s spot in floor finals. In TF she got a 14.125 with a fall and OOB so that’s 15.025 plus if I remember correctly she took out a harder turn, so maybe 15.1ish for her floor. Hmm ok maybe not Nastia got a 15.350 on floor

Most people were giving Aly a team medal and a possible medal on floor, that’s it. In fact, I’m pretty sure I remember reading that if Afan, Ponor or Izbasa hit their floor routines there’s no way Aly will win with ‘international judges’. Truth is NOBODY hit routine or not was going to beat her, she took it out of their hands when she hit her routine out of the park.

I see a lot of youtube comments saying Ponor should have won because she’s more ‘artistic’, I like Ponor but her routine wasn’t exactly filled with exquisite dance and her tumbling is far worse on the eyes than Aly’s. Seriously was her second tumble supposed to be a tucked or piked full-in because I still don’t know. And worthy 2008 gold medalist Izbasa’s routine was fucking BORING.

So gymnasts like Alicia, Komova or Afan may ‘look’ better or even ‘be’ better but there’s nothing pretty about falling.

    • mim Says:

yes, thank you! someone else who thought izbasa’s floor was boring! i respect her as a gymnast but i never understood all the raving about her “mature” routine set to slow pink floyd music when the actual gymnastics itself was nothing stellar. it wasn’t terrible, far from it, just not as exciting as everyone made it out to be.

agree about ponor too. i think cata lost an opportunity to make her dance a little sexier and more exciting. but i adored afan’s floor (without the mistakes of course), i thought her choreography was just really fresh and interesting.

im all for the dancy, pretty gymnasts 99% of the time but aly can tumble the hell out of anyone and im glad she got rewarded for that.

    • gingercrush Says:

I had high hopes for Iordache and did not think Ponor would make floor finals. Iordache had floor difficulty of 6.4 and was my favourite for floor gold. If she didn’t have her heel problems she could have had a whole different Olympic experience. she had massive beam difficulty too.

Though I don’t think anyone expected Raisman to score so high on floor and Iordache has always tended to be untidy on the landings. Untidy landings are just way too costly. She and Izbasa both have slight helicopter legs.

I do love that the three medalists on floor all have form issues.

      —-

Also question for floor experts but how hard would a Double-Double (Silivas) connected into a punch front be?

  12. DL Says:

Proof that sports is about results, not potential. On paper, Sacramone had the potential to be the far bigger star. She gives better interviews, and she’s more conventionally pretty. But she never had the mental game–not until it was too late, and she was past her physical peak.

    • mim Says:

i think im the only one who thinks asac isn’t as pretty/hot as everyone makes her out to be… she’s just average to me. i think her tv personality makes her seem more attractive.

      • Gymnerd Says:

I think I feel the opposite. She’s pretty, but it’s like she knows she’s hot. That kind of ruins it for me.

      • Gymnerd Says:

Let me rephrase that. First, Alicia always looked kind of “cheap-pretty” to me. She’s also got that whole “I’m hot and I know it” vibe to her, which makes her a whole lot less attractive in my book. YMMV.

      • sanitynmotion Says:

YES Gymnerd I know exactly what you are talking about. It’s the same way I’m feeling about Maroney now, too. The whole “I know I’m hot” vibe and the only thing ASac doesn’t do “now” that Maroney does is post endless pictures of herself on Instagram. Although I’m sure if Instagram were around 4-8 years ago, she would have been doing that constantly too.

  13. JAS4 Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Alicia is secretly (or not so secretly) upset at the mention of the 2012 team I wonder if she feels like some of them betrayed her by surpasing her and making her not an asset to have on the team

I still wonder if Alicia didn’t have some kind of back door deal with Marta like Nastia did perhaps if Marta new she could do the FHS Double that she would be named to the team and didn’t have to show it at trials or that she would be named an alternate and if she could show the new vault at camp then Marta would find a way to replace McKayla or someone else due to “injury” or maybe she just thought that she was still team leader and they would put her on the team just for that but I don’t think that’s the case because she knows how anti- team captain Marta is

  14. Formergymgirl Says:

I think Alicia’s form is great on her tumbling and leaps. In fact, i’ve never seen such powerful leaps. However, IMO she doesn’t dance. Her floor routine from 08 was full of pouty poses. That’s not to say she can’t dance but I found her floor boring and uninspiring. I can totally see why she’d have a lot of male admirers. She’s attractive and womanly in a sport where non-follwers still think gymnasts are little girls with fried eggs for boobs…..I bet when Alicia fell at the Olympics the rest of the girls on the team, after the initial pissed off feeling had passed, were secretly happy because they probably thought “ha! cocky bitch at last had what was coming to her, that’ll teach her!”. In fact, if I were Shawn there’s no way i’d have gone over and consoled her after her fall on floor after the way she blatantly snubbed her at 07 floor finals. I’d have left her to cry and think about the saying “what goes around comes around”.I
I’d have paid to see a Asac – Maroney showdown on vault in London. What, with their two alter-egos on show it would have been great entertainment. I know i’m kind of slagging these gymnasts off here but I prefer the more unassuming gymnast who is confident but not OTT. Think Shannon Miller. I met Shannon once. I was a podium steward at the worlds in ’93. I got to see so much behind the scenes. I remember that Shannon and Strug were never with Dawes the entire championships. They trained seperately and even at the after party they were never together. It was like they were competing for different countries. Even though Shannon was the champion Dawes got all the attention. I think the whole bursting into tears whilst on her ass on the vault mat endeared her to the British public.

    • gingercrush Says:

Yes this about Sacramone. Lovely form on her twists for instance but I don’t see her as a dancer and her hands offend me.

  15. Case Says:

According to this article from this weekend, Jordyn does plan to return to training after the tour with Geddert. Looks like her target is Worlds at a minimum.

    http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20121102/OPINION03/211020419/1361/Gymnast-Jordyn-Wieber-still-riding-high-after-Olympic-gold

    • mim Says:

that sounds promising! fingers crossed we see her at another worlds, be it next year or the year after. gosh this tour feels like it’s gone on long enough, doesn’t it..

  16. Biyatch Says:

Alicia was never consistent on beam until the comeback. With so much focus on Olympic years I think its easy to forget the train wreck that was the US on beam in TF at 2007 Worlds. Different circumstances because the US still ended up with a gold medal but Shawn and Nastia both were bad there. (Nastia bailed out of a dismount and Shawn came off.) With ASac it seemed like it was totally hit or miss, there was no middle ground.

Regarding the dancing aspect while you could argue that Alicia didn’t really dance (really none of them do) her floor routines were always fluid and didn’t have the stiffness/ roboticness of some of most of the US floor routines. You can see the huge presentation difference when you look at Alicia’s routine that Aly recycled. Aly just wasn’t able to pull it off like Alicia.

Alicia also definitely benefitted from the lounge out of her tumbling. I personally loved her 2011 floor, music and choreo. If you could have put her 2005 tumbling with her 2011 routine it would have been awesome.

    http://www.gymnastike.org/article/15277-The-Next-Phase-for-Martha-Karolyi-and-the-US-Womens-Elite-Program-Announced

    Well that wasn’t a huge surprise…

  20. Laura Says:

True, Aly had a better performance at the olympics than Alicia did back in 2008. But, I think we focus too much on the events of one competition. Yes, the olympics is the utmost goal and a medal is the utmost prize in the sport of gymnastics. Yet, if you look at the careers of both of these gymnasts, Alicia still has the most medals of any gymnast in a world championships. So, she had a terrible olympics….if we only remember Alicia for one competition then that is not Alicia’s mistake, but the mistake that her fans and the gymnastic community takes when remembering gymnastics history. Alicia and Aly are both phenomenal gymnasts and yes, Alicia will likely remember the olympics and wish that the competition had gone differently….but it’s JUST one competition. Alicia should be remembered not only for her olympics, but for her years of perseverance and tenacity that she brought to the sport.
